00:00Al-Qasas, the narrative, with the name of Allah, the most gracious, the ever merciful.
00:08Tal, seen, mean, the benign, the all-hearing, the all-knowing.
00:18These are the verses of the perfect book, which explains everything vividly.
00:24We recount to you a portion of the true account of Moses and Pharaoh, with all accuracy, for the benefit
00:32of the people who would believe.
00:34The facts are, Pharaoh behaved arrogantly in his land.
00:40He divided its inhabitants into parties.
00:43He oppressed them and thus sought to weaken a section of them, the Israelites.
00:48He killed their sons and sought to make their women immodest by sparing them.
00:55In fact, he was of the evildoers.
01:00And we chose to confer favor upon those who had been rendered weak in the land,
01:05and to make them leaders and to bestow a kingdom upon them, thus make them inheritors of our blessings.
01:13And we chose to establish them with all powers in the country,
01:17and to visit Pharaoh and Haman and their hordes with that power and supremacy,
01:24which they dreaded from those Israelites rendered weak by them.
01:29And we revealed to the mother of Moses, saying,
01:32Give him suck.
01:34But when you have fear about him,
01:36cast him, placing him in a chest into the river,
01:40and entertain no fear nor grief about his welfare.
01:45Verily, we shall restore him to you,
01:48and shall make him one of the messengers.
01:52Moses' mother cast him into the river according to the revelation,
01:56Then one of the family of Pharaoh picked him up,
01:59and with the result that he one day became an enemy to and a source of grief for them.
02:05Verily, Pharaoh, Haman, and the hordes of them both were all wrongdoers.
02:12And a woman of the family of Pharaoh said,
02:15This child will be a source of joy and comfort to my and your eyes.
02:21Do not kill him.
02:23He may prove to be useful to us.
02:26Or we may adopt him as a son.
02:29And they did not perceive our purpose.
02:34And the heart of the mother of Moses became free from anxiety.
02:40She would have nearly disclosed his identity out of joy,
02:45how Allah had become guardian of her child.
02:48Had we not strengthened her heart to help her remain of the firm-minded believers.
02:55She said to his sister,
02:58Follow him.
02:59So she followed and watched him from a distance,
03:02while they, Pharaoh's people,
03:05took no notice that she was keeping a watch over him.
03:09And we had already ordained and made him refuse the wet nurses to be suckled.
03:15So when the question of his suckling arose after Moses was picked up from the river,
03:20she, Moses' sister, said,
03:23Shall I point out to you the people of a household who will bring him up for you
03:27and will be his sincere well-wishers?
03:31This was how we restored him to his mother,
03:34so that she might be consoled to see her child
03:38and should no longer grieve,
03:40and that she might know that the promise of Allah is true,
03:45a fact which most of these disbelievers of the Holy Prophet do not know.
03:52And when he, Moses, reached the age of full growth
03:57and attained perfection,
04:00we granted him wisdom and knowledge.
04:04That is how we reward the doers of good.
04:09And one day,
04:10Moses entered the city at a time when its inhabitants were idling in a state of heedlessness
04:16and found therein two men fighting with one another,
04:21one of his own party, an Israelite,
04:24while the other belonged to that of his enemies.
04:28The one who belonged to his own people
04:31sought his help against the other
04:33who belonged to those of his enemy.
04:36Thereat Moses struck him with his fist,
04:40and this brought about his death.
04:44He, Moses, said,
04:46This death of his has occurred
04:49owing to his satanic action.
04:52He, Satan, is of course an enemy of yours,
04:56misleading and cutting your ties with God.
05:00Moses said, praying,
05:02My Lord, I have involved myself into trouble,
05:05so protect me.
05:07Thereupon he protected him
05:09from the evil consequences of his act.
05:12Verily, he is the great protector,
05:14the ever-merciful.
05:17He also added,
05:19My Lord,
05:21since you have always been kind and gracious to me,
05:24I can never be a helper and a supporter of the guilty.
05:29The next day,
05:30early in the morning,
05:32he entered the city apprehensive of the enemy
05:35and observing the situation.
05:37And lo,
05:38the man who had sought his help the day before,
05:43again that day,
05:44cried out to him for help.
05:46Moses said to him,
05:48You are a misguided fellow,
05:50away from the path of peace and piety.
05:54And when Moses intended to lay hold of the man
05:58who was now an enemy to both of them,
06:01the man said,
06:02Moses,
06:03do you intend to kill me today
06:06as you killed a person yesterday?
06:08You are only trying to figure
06:11as a tyrant in the country.
06:13You have no mind to be of the promoters of peace.
06:18Then it came to pass
06:20that a man came running
06:21from the far end of the city
06:22and said,
06:24Moses,
06:25the chiefs are consulting together to kill you.
06:28Therefore,
06:28leave this place at once.
06:30I am of course your sincere well-wisher.
06:34So Moses left that city in fear
06:37and he kept watching around carefully.
06:39He said,
06:41praying at that time,
06:42My Lord,
06:43deliver me from the unjust people.
06:48When Moses set out
06:49turning his face towards Midian,
06:51he said,
06:52I hope my Lord will put me
06:54on the right course
06:54till I reach the goal.
06:57And when he arrived
06:58at the water of Midian,
07:00he found there a party of men
07:02watering their flocks
07:04and he found two ladies
07:05standing apart from them,
07:07holding their flock back.
07:09He said,
07:11What is your problem?
07:12They replied,
07:13We cannot water our flock
07:15until the shepherds depart,
07:17having driven their flocks away.
07:19And our father is a very old man.
07:23So Moses watered their flock for them.
07:26Then he retired to a place with the shade
07:29and said,
07:31My Lord,
07:32I stand in need of whatever good
07:34you may bestow on me.
07:37Now one of the two ladies
07:38came to him
07:39walking bashfully.
07:40She said,
07:41My father calls you
07:43so that he may reward you
07:45for your having watered
07:46our flock for us.
07:48So when Moses came to him
07:50and told him
07:51all that had taken place,
07:53he,
07:54the father of the two ladies,
07:55said,
07:56Have no fear.
07:58You have escaped
07:59from the unjust people.
08:02One of the two ladies said,
08:03My dear father,
08:05take him into your service.
08:07You cannot do better
08:09than employ a man
08:10who is strong and trustworthy.
08:13He, their father,
08:14said to Moses,
08:16I intend to marry
08:18one of these two daughters
08:19of mine to you,
08:21provided you stay
08:22in my service
08:23for eight years.
08:24But if you extend your stay,
08:27making it complete
08:28ten years,
08:29it will be an act of grace
08:31on your part.
08:32I have no desire
08:33to be hard on you
08:35by laying any more burden
08:36of responsibility on you.
08:38Allah willing,
08:40you will find me
08:41an upright person.
08:43Moses said,
08:45accepting the proposal,
08:47This is a covenant
08:48between us.
08:50Whichever of the two terms
08:51I complete,
08:52I will be free
08:53from obligation
08:54and there shall be
08:55no injustice to me.
08:57And Allah is witness
08:59over what we have agreed.
09:02And when Moses
09:03had completed
09:04the agreed term
09:05and set forth
09:07with his family,
09:08he saw with feelings
09:10of warmth,
09:11of affection,
09:11and love
09:12a sort of fire
09:14on the way
09:15at a place
09:16in the direction
09:17of the mount.
09:18He said to his family,
09:21You stay here.
09:22I have seen
09:24with feelings
09:24of warmth
09:25of love
09:26and affection
09:26a fire.
09:28I hope to bring you
09:29some useful
09:30and important information
09:31from there
09:32or at least
09:33a burning brand
09:34from the fire
09:35that you may
09:35warm yourselves.
09:37And when he came
09:38close to it,
09:39a voice called out
09:41to him
09:41from a blessed spot
09:43on the right side
09:44of the valley
09:44from the direction
09:45of a tree.
09:47Moses,
09:48surely I am
09:49Allah,
09:50the Lord
09:51of the worlds.
09:53And put down
09:54your staff
09:55on the ground.
09:56Then,
09:57no sooner
09:58did he see it
09:59shifting like
10:00a tiny,
10:01quickly moving serpent,
10:02than he turned
10:03his back
10:04and retreated
10:05and would not
10:06even look back.
10:07God said,
10:09Moses,
10:10come forward
10:11and have no fear.
10:13Surely you are
10:14of those
10:15who are safe.
10:17Insert your hand
10:18into your bosom.
10:19It will come forth
10:21flawless,
10:22sparkling white
10:23and draw your arm
10:26towards yourself
10:26to compose yourself
10:27when you encounter fear.
10:30So these two signs
10:32are two proofs
10:32from your Lord
10:33to be presented
10:35before Pharaoh
10:35and his courtiers
10:36for surely
10:38they are lawless
10:39and disobedient people.
10:42Moses said,
10:44My Lord,
10:46I killed a person
10:47from among them
10:48accidentally
10:48and I fear
10:50that they will
10:51kill me
10:52before I am able
10:53to fulfill my mission.
10:55And my brother Aaron
10:57is more fluent
10:57and eloquent
10:58in speech than I.
11:00So send him
11:01with me
11:01as a helper
11:02to bear me out
11:03for I fear
11:04that they will
11:05treat me
11:05as a liar.
11:08God said,
11:09We will surely
11:11strengthen your arm
11:12with your brother
11:12and we will give
11:14both of you
11:14so much power
11:15that they shall
11:16not reach you
11:17to do you harm.
11:18So go armed
11:20with our signs.
11:21You too
11:22and your followers
11:23will come out
11:24victorious.
11:27So when Moses
11:28came to them
11:29with our clear signs,
11:32they said,
11:33This is but a forged
11:35and unprecedented fraud.
11:38We never heard
11:39such a thing
11:40in the time
11:41of our forefathers.
11:43And Moses said,
11:45My Lord knows best
11:46who it is
11:48that has brought
11:48true guidance
11:49from him
11:50and who shall meet
11:51a good end
11:52in this world
11:53and will have
11:54the reward
11:55of final abode
11:56in the hereafter.
11:57The truth is
11:58that these wrongdoers
11:59shall never prosper.
12:02And Pharaoh said,
12:04O chiefs of my court,
12:06I know for you
12:07no God
12:08other than myself.
12:11And O Haman,
12:12light a fire for me
12:14on the bricks of clay
12:15and get a high building,
12:17high like a tower.
12:19Let it be built for me
12:21that I may
12:21by climbing over it
12:23have a look at this
12:24God of Moses,
12:26for I take him
12:27to be certainly
12:28of those
12:29who tell lies.
12:31And he,
12:33Pharaoh,
12:33and his host
12:35behaved arrogantly
12:36in the land
12:37without any justification
12:39and as if they thought
12:41that they would
12:42never be brought
12:42back to us.
12:44So we seized him
12:46and his host
12:48and we cast them
12:49into the sea.
12:51Behold how evil
12:53was the end
12:53of these wrongdoers.
12:55And we made them
12:57archetypes of evil
12:58who invited people
13:00to the fire
13:00and on the day
13:02of resurrection
13:02they will find
13:04no help.
13:07And we have made them
13:08to be followed
13:09by a curse
13:10in this world
13:11and on the day
13:12of resurrection
13:13they will be among
13:14those deprived
13:15of all good.
13:18After we had destroyed
13:20the earlier generations
13:21we gave Moses
13:23the scripture
13:23which contained
13:25enlightening arguments
13:26for the people
13:27of Israel
13:27and served
13:29as a guidance
13:30and promised
13:31them mercy
13:32so that they
13:33might take heed.
13:35Prophet
13:37You were not
13:38on the western side
13:40of the Mount of Sinai
13:41when we granted
13:42Moses the commission
13:43of prophethood
13:44nor were you
13:45personally present
13:46with the witnesses
13:49but we have raised
13:51many a generation
13:52since then
13:53and a long period
13:54of time
13:55has passed over them
13:56nor have you
13:58been living
13:58among the people
13:59of Midian
14:00reciting our messages
14:02to them.
14:03Indeed
14:03it is we
14:04who have sent you
14:05as a messenger
14:06and have revealed
14:08all this information
14:09to you
14:11and you were not
14:12present
14:13at the foot
14:13of the Mount
14:14with Moses
14:15when we called
14:15to you
14:16but all these
14:18revelation
14:18are from the mercy
14:20of your Lord
14:20so that you may
14:22warn the people
14:23to whom no warner
14:24had come
14:25for a long time
14:26before you
14:27that they may
14:28attain eminence
14:30and we have sent you
14:32and we have sent you
14:32to them
14:32lest when some evil
14:34befalls them
14:35because of what
14:36their hands
14:37have sent forward
14:37they should say
14:38our Lord
14:39why did you not
14:41send a messenger
14:42to us
14:43if you had sent one
14:45we would have
14:46followed your commandments
14:47and would have been
14:48of the believers
14:50but now that the truth
14:52has come to them
14:53from us
14:53they say
14:55why has he
14:56not been given
14:57the like
14:57of what
14:58was given
14:59to Moses
15:00did the people
15:02the disbelievers
15:03not reject
15:04before this
15:05that which was
15:06given to Moses
15:07they say
15:09they are both
15:11frauds
15:11who support
15:12each other
15:13they also say
15:15we reject
15:16the claim
15:17of each one
15:18of them
15:20say
15:21if you speak
15:23the truth
15:23then bring
15:24a book
15:25from Allah
15:25which is a better
15:26guide than
15:27these two
15:28that I may
15:29follow it
15:31if they do not
15:33accept the challenge
15:34and do not
15:35answer you
15:36know
15:37that they are
15:38just following
15:39their own
15:39low and evil
15:40desires
15:41and who
15:42should be
15:43more erring
15:43than one
15:44who leaving
15:45aside the
15:45guidance
15:46from Allah
15:46only follows
15:47his own
15:48low and
15:49evil desires
15:50verily
15:51Allah does
15:52not guide
15:52the wrongdoing
15:53people to
15:54success
15:56we have been
15:57sending
15:58uninterrupted
15:59revelations to
16:00them
16:00so that they
16:01may rise
16:02to eminence
16:04many of the
16:05people to whom
16:05we gave the
16:06scripture before
16:06this
16:07believe in it
16:08too
16:09and when
16:10this Quran
16:11is recited
16:12to them
16:12they say
16:13we believe
16:14in it
16:14it is a
16:15revelation
16:16from our
16:16Lord
16:17full of
16:17truth
16:18and wisdom
16:19indeed
16:20we had
16:21submitted
16:21to him
16:22even before
16:23it
16:24they are
16:25the people
16:25who will
16:26be given
16:26their reward
16:27twice
16:28for they
16:29have been
16:29suffering
16:29patiently
16:30for the
16:31cause of
16:31the truth
16:32they meet
16:33evil
16:33by repaying
16:34it with
16:35good
16:35and spending
16:36the cause
16:37of Allah
16:37out of that
16:38which we
16:38have provided
16:39them with
16:40and when
16:41they hear
16:42something
16:42vain
16:42they turn
16:44away from
16:44it
16:44and say
16:45we shall
16:47reap the
16:47fruit of
16:48our deeds
16:48and you
16:49shall reap
16:50the fruit
16:51of yours
16:51bidding them
16:53goodbye
16:53then say
16:54peace be
16:55upon you
16:56we have
16:57no desire
16:58to have
16:58any concern
16:59with the
16:59ignorant
17:01prophet
17:02it
17:02it is
17:04not
17:04possible
17:04for you
17:05to guide
17:05whomsoever
17:06you wish
17:07but Allah
17:08guides
17:09whomsoever
17:09he will
17:10he knows
17:12fully well

17:39this true
17:40fact
17:42we

18:20and
18:20oh people
18:21whatever of
18:23anything you
18:24have been
18:24given
18:25is only
18:26the passing

18:31but that
18:32reward which
18:33Allah has
18:34for you
18:34is much
18:35better and
18:36more lasting
18:37than this
18:38will you

18:57brought before
18:58us to render
18:58an account
18:59of his
18:59deeds
19:01let these
19:02people not
19:02forget the
19:03day when he
19:04will call to

19:07associated
19:08partners about
19:09whom you
19:10had made
19:10such pretensions
19:13thus those

19:29we have
19:29nothing to
19:30do with
19:30them and
19:31we turn
19:31to you

19:44but they
19:44will give
19:45them no
19:45answer
19:46and they
19:47will actually
19:48see the
19:49punishment
19:50how good
19:51it would
19:51have been
19:52if they
19:53had followed
19:53the right
