The Big Bad Morning Show crew discuss what the Baltimore Orioles starting rotation will look like in the 2026 season and if Cade Povich has a chance to secure one of those spots.
Transcript
00:00Hey, Jeremy, when you think about the Orioles' pitch and rotation, who do you think about them?
00:05First, or you mean this in general?
00:07I mean, I've said this plenty of times. I think they are built for the regular season.
00:12I mean, the five.
00:13The five that they have? You're talking about where they rank?
00:17Who's in the five-man rotation?
00:18Oh, who's in it?
00:19Oh, man. Jesus.
00:21I went around my ass, scratched my elbow.
00:23Well, it's the four guys you know, and then we're deciding between Kramer and Eflin.
00:27So you don't think Cade Povich has any chance of being in that five?
00:31I think he has to force his way in there.
00:33I mean, look, there's some big upside there.
00:36I love the fact that he is, by the way, his locker's right next to Bassett.
00:41And they said that one of the things that was said about Bassett coming in is he loves working with
00:44young pitchers.
00:45And this could be something to help him out.
00:46But he's an unknown.
00:49Because I would have been fine if he was your sixth guy in your rotation.
00:53That's why I was saying, even if they didn't pick up Bassett where they were,
00:56I thought they were okay for the regular season.
00:58We just have to figure out, do we have enough front-line pitching for the postseason?
01:02And look, you don't have to have number ones in the postseason,
01:05but you have a better shot at winning when you do.
01:07You do.
01:07If you have at least one, you're good to go.
01:09Because he might pitch three times in a seven-game set.
01:12Absolutely.
01:12So you don't see Cade Povich right now as being a candidate as it stands now.
01:17I think someone has to have one injury and a very disappointing performance from somebody else.
01:26And he has to be great.
01:27But I don't think on opening day, Cade Povich isn't in the five-man rotation.
01:33And you don't need five-man rotation for about two weeks when you first start the season.
01:37But opening day, he's not in there.
01:41I mean, do you think he's on the team opening day?
01:44Yeah.
01:45Okay.
01:45Although I don't know.
01:46Now, here's the thing about Cade Povich.
01:49Here's the improvement.
01:512024, he pitched 79 in two-thirds innings.
01:5469 strikeouts.
01:572025, 112 in the third innings.
02:01118 strikeouts.
02:02So he became the more strikeouts per inning pitch guy.
02:06If he can miss more bats, because he had almost a 1.5 whip, 1.496, 1.5 whip, which
02:15was worse than the year before, was 1.4.
02:18He's got to miss some bats.
02:19He's got to stop walking people.
02:20He walked 43 batters last.
02:22See, that's the biggest thing when you start looking at that whip, because even if you don't cut back on
02:26some of the singles,
02:27you can cut back on those walks and try to focus on throwing strikes more.
02:32When I get in the head and the count, wasting something, but wasting something that's going in the zone and
02:36coming out of it.
02:37He's either missing bats or people are squaring up, because he had 125 hits, gave up, and 112 innings.
02:45Yeah.
02:45And again, young pitcher still has a chance to kind of get there.
02:49Only 26.
02:49I'll point it.
02:50Go look at Lucas Giolito and Dylan Cease, how they started off and where they ended up in their careers.
02:55Whether you, I don't know what Cade Povich can be, and the fact that he's lefty, I think you're going
02:59to take a look at him a little bit longer.
03:00In fact, he won't be 26 until April.
03:04So, I'm not giving up on him by any stretch of the imagination.
03:09I just don't think he's in the rotation.
03:11Not right now.
03:12And I don't, and to be honest with you, Jeremy, where is he in the bullpen?
03:15I mean, how confident are you putting him in the bullpen?
03:18I mean, he's a big K guy.
03:20Yeah, but he's a big hit guy.
03:23I mean, he's got to pitch somewhere, right?
03:25If he's not in the rotation, I feel like...
03:26Am I wrong?
03:27Does he pitch?
03:28Does he start?
03:28I said opening days on the roster.
03:31Is he in Norfolk?
03:32I don't know.
03:32What is his option situation?
03:34I didn't even look at it before we started talking about this.
03:36Too much.
03:37Two options.
03:37He's got two options.
03:38Okay.
03:39I mean, there's that chance.
03:40I mean, there's always been the chance then with Mayo and Povich.
03:44His middle name is Jackie.
03:45Could be...
03:46Cade Jackie Povich.
03:48Jackie?
03:49Jackie.
03:49It's got to be a family thing or something.
03:51J-A-C-K-I-E.
03:52Traditional Jackie.
03:53Jackie.
03:56That's weird.
03:57He should have just come off as Jackie Povich.
03:59Yeah.
03:59Hey, it's me.
04:00Oh, don't do that.
04:01Because...
04:04Where's Mari at?
04:06No, but again, like with Cade, we saw that the talent's there.
04:09We saw the ability to get punch outs.
04:12It's as you pointed out.
04:13You put too many guys on base and you give up too many hits.
04:15One of the first things I look at with pitchers is their whip.
04:18Because what you're telling me is it's opportunity calls.
04:20How many guys are on base that have a chance where a single can score somebody?
04:24Or, you know, an extra base hit can score somebody?
04:26If you're putting too many guys on, it's a recipe for disaster.
04:30That's why I've said sometimes when you look at the numbers, you've got to look deeper.
04:33Have they been getting lucky or have they been getting unlucky?
04:36410-583-1057.
04:38That's the number.
04:39Bought them a big bad morning show on the fan.
04:41In this era, would you think 17 home runs and 112 innings are a lot?
04:45In this era?
04:46Say it.
04:47Give me the numbers again.
04:4717 home runs and 112 innings.
04:50I would think so.
04:51That's a lot.
04:52Yeah, because...
04:53Well, the year before, in only 79 innings, he gave up 12.
04:55So he cut back.
04:56Here, let me look at what Zach...
04:57Zach Liddell, I don't know where he finished.
04:59So you're going at one of the best.
05:01I mean...
05:02No, no.
05:02So Zach Liddell gave up more homers than a lot of players last year.
05:08It may have been number one in the league by the end of the year.
05:12So here we are.
05:1220-25.
05:14Liddell between two teams.
05:16He gave up 36 home runs in 32 games.
05:21Oh, you want innings, don't you?
05:23Innings pitch would have been 186.
05:25He gave up 32?
05:2732.
05:27Yeah, he gave up 112.
05:28He gave up only 17.
05:31Okay.
05:31So yeah, I don't think...
05:32I don't think 17 in that many innings is a lot of...
05:35It's probably middle of the pack, to be honest with you.
05:37I don't think...
05:38I wouldn't call him a pitcher that gives up too many home runs.
05:4117 in 112.
05:42Yeah, but that's the other thing.
05:43Like, if a guy like Liddell, who's still out there, I believe, if he can cut back on the
05:46home runs, I mean, his numbers look great.
05:50He had a...
05:50That was his only issue.
05:52He had a 1.069 whip with the Reds and a 1.118 whip with the Rays.
06:00And he gave up 36 bombs.
06:03He's not putting guys on.
06:04He just gave up solo taters all the time.
06:06Let's go to Baltimore and get Mike.
06:08What's up, Mike?
06:09Hey, how y'all doing this morning?
06:11Doing well.
06:11How are you?
06:12I'm freezing right now.
06:15Charging this car.
06:16Hey, hey, look, as far as the...
06:19Hey, you know what you ought to do?
06:21Remember when we were kids?
06:22You had the zip string.
06:23You put it in the car.
06:24You pull it out real quick and start going.
06:26Yeah.
06:27You should get one of those, Mike.
06:28You know, see, Rob, I wasn't even going to mention that.
06:31I didn't enjoy the second half of the game because I sat behind your bench and your
06:35head was blocking the court.
06:36But anyway...
06:39You know why you had to move, don't you?
06:41You didn't have the seat you had in the first half because you had to go out and charge
06:44your car up and lost your seat.
06:48I tell you.
06:49But you know what?
06:51Who...
06:51I mean, as far as Povich having a chance at the fifth starter, as, you know, as a person
06:57of who?
06:57I mean, what is it?
06:58Rodgers?
06:59Rodgers, um, um, um, Eflin, Bob?
07:02No, it wouldn't be Rodgers.
07:04It would be even Eflin or, um, probably Kramer.
07:08Rodgers is going to be at the front of the rotation.
07:10He's going to be number one or two.
07:12That's what I was saying.
07:13Yeah.
07:13So it'll be at the expense of either Bassett...
07:15I mean, not Bassett.
07:16Be, um, Kramer or Eflin.
07:19Oh, yeah.
07:20Kramer.
07:20Okay.
07:21Yeah, but I don't think he's going to, um, I don't think he's going to eclipse none
07:24of them, though, man.
07:25I don't think he's as good as they are.
07:26I mean, is that...
07:27No.
07:27I mean, if he's...
07:28He's up and down.
07:29If he's better than Kramer in April, well, everybody is.
07:32It's just the rest of the season you don't worry about.
07:35Yeah.
07:35All right, Mike.
07:36Have a good one, man.
07:37Yeah, what if they wait until May to pitch Kramer?
07:39It's like, hey, this guy's up for the Cy Young.
07:41Did you notice?
07:42No April.
07:43Bring him in in the second inning of every game.
07:45I mean, like, again, the way that people talk about Bassett and, you know, you look
07:50at the national guys, Buck Showalter said he thought it was one of the best signings
07:53in the offseason for what he brings to a team, and you listen to all these different guys
07:58that are talking about it, but when it comes down to it, I mean, Kramer could be just like
08:03Bassett as well.
08:05Buck's probably thinking, where's their front office when I was there?
08:07Yeah, how come they didn't get that guy for me?
08:09I like that guy.
08:11Yeah.
