A slow start to the season doomed the 2025 Orioles and the 2026 Orioles are already down two everyday starters. Can Baltimore survive an April gauntlet until Jackson Holliday and Jordan Westburg are healthy?
Transcript
00:00the orioles offense what's the uh the ceiling i think it's pretty high even though they're
00:06going to be minus two starters in the infield at least coming out of spring training i think
00:10the rotation is better than last year what what does that mean because last year was one of the
00:15worst in baseball and the bullpen trying to come together and nolan pointed out that wolf ram
00:21is pitching today and he looks great one inning and not so much he's cnl perez maybe not as good
00:28as catching home runs in the bullpen though let's go to ryan in uh baltimore ryan what's up
00:33hey gentlemen good morning happy friday all right same to you so bobby just talked about it that
00:38there's two holes in the infield and i think what scares me for this orioles team right now is just
00:43the month of april um i say that because obviously we have jackson out probably for the first half of
00:49that plus he's gonna have to get some rehab starts down in the minors or wherever so that'll probably
00:54be the whole month of april until he comes back plus you also have westberg who if the prp injections
01:00work out like they should um you're looking at maybe mid-may best case scenario so the month of
01:05april is going to be going to be the scary time and if you remember last year the month of
01:09april was
01:09kind of where we lost the whole entire season you know after may kind of started to pick up and
01:14we
01:15actually had a really good record after april so i think what it's going to come down to is how
01:20good
01:20kobe mayo can do at third base and then i guess blaze alexander at second and then once holiday
01:27comes back after april i think mayo's the odd man out who gets moved to the bench you move alexander
01:33to third and then you have holiday play second because i mean we've heard uh you know last week
01:38i think it was um a former teammate of mine uh tyler locklear with arizona i'm sure he um he
01:45that blaze is
01:46actually a better third baseman so i think it just makes sense that unless kobe mayo's bat is
01:51absolutely scorching which right now it is then uh then i think he's the odd man out now obviously
01:58defensively if we give up five runs it doesn't matter if we uh can score uh you know six seven
02:03or eight so that's kind of the name of the game right to score more runs than the other team
02:06so as
02:07long as the offense is doing good i think it'll make up for the defensive losses and ryan real quick
02:11did locklear go to curly am i right on that one yep yep and locklear's uh going out with bobby
02:18gimmel's daughter i think or they were they're engaged i know i think they're they may be married
02:24by now i don't know all right so there you go a little name drop in ryan in baltimore but
02:28points
02:29are well taken uh but mayo does he give it their taketh away and you know i don't know if
02:35i want if
02:36the oras could score six runs a game that's great yeah but i don't know their team eras pushing five
02:42i mean then it means a lot of uh may locks and drinking watching the game every night you know
02:47i mean i would like some comfortable victories here yeah i mean i i think i have some some strong
02:54confidence in the starting rotation and it just depends on how the bullpen goes but yeah i don't
02:58i don't think that mayo's uh you know defensive flaws are going to count to to five runs or so
03:05but
03:05you know i think he's a solid option and like i said if if when jackson comes back he's obviously
03:10going to probably play second base and move blaze over there so we just got to make it through that
03:15first month and also more experience at third base for mayo might be a good thing that he starts to
03:19work it out kind of like gunner at short yeah and eventually he gets traded yeah who knows how
03:23it goes or west or westburg gets traded if he can't stay on the field hey ryan good call have
03:28a
03:28great weekend and look you know these five run innings you know it's bottom of the second
03:34ground ball to 30 boots it and then all of a sudden one out becomes no outs and then there's
03:39a man on first and then things kind of go haywire but it goes back to the old mantra pick
03:45up your
03:45teammates then you put the onus on the pitcher and the other players to make up for that miscue
03:53they are called errors they're not called on purposes you know i mean it is a mistake but
03:59he's three for three three errors in three games yeah third base so it's uh you know just
04:07you just tighten it up a little bit because the bat the intrigue has always been with his bat
04:12and we've seen it in spring training so far i don't know man him at third base i we know
04:20we talked
04:20about it yesterday if muscles and ward and balonzo and gunner etc are doing what they're supposed to
04:29to do i would prefer a guy that would tighten up defensively and live with a 240 batting average
04:40maybe not a buck 90 but you get where i'm coming from right as opposed to a guy that he's
04:45going to
04:45add to the clubbing of the opposing team but it's going to be a liability when it comes to you
04:51know
04:51doing his job with the glove so to at least start the season where we're going to assume that jackson
04:55holiday is going to need a little ramp up you know not going to be there for opening day if
04:59even if
05:00it's a couple weeks just a week in the minors he's not there i would think he'll he'll start taking
05:05ground balls and stuff next week well it's i mean we're under a month till opening day uh i don't
05:12know
05:12i mean it'd be great if he's it just helps everybody if he's ready by opening day but let's say
05:16that he's
05:16not and you have blaze at second and it's vacant third and you're choosing between mayo and others
05:20bob you're saying here that you might go a tyro estrada who by the way is the dh today
05:27okay well let's see what he's got for his glove and ramos is at third but and we'll give you
05:34the
05:34lineup in totality but is it estrada a guy supposed to be able to do some things for you defensively
05:42that's the point yeah that's that's the thought so i'm not i'm not the gm of the team well it
05:47goes
05:48back that they've got they've given themselves a lot of names here it's kind of like what i was
05:52saying with the bullpen you're not really overly confident that any of these guys are particularly
05:56great but there's a lot of names on the board right now to choose from so i at my point
06:01and i
06:02guess it's going old man stuff i'll go strong glove in an already loaded lineup versus a weak glove
06:09in an already loaded lineup i mean if you want to bash people's brains in it's fun to watch the
06:15games the last three hours i mean that's all very touching but you know i'd rather have a guy that's
06:20steady and can turn double plays and you know has the wherewithal with the baseball instincts
06:25defensively to he can be an asset to if he might be somewhat of a liability with the stick he
06:32can help
06:32you win games with his glove i'd agree with you but it's all dependent on a actual defensive person
06:38rising up and showing that ability that is true
