02:46Good evening, Trude and Adam Tobago and those of you who are locked on globally, this is Beyond The Tape.
02:50I'm your host, Whitney Husbands.
02:52And, of course, it's Monday. It's the beginning of a new work week.
02:54And I hope persons were really able to fully recover as we enter back into the real world.
03:00Now, there are some families and loved ones who will be mourning over the weekend because there was persons who
03:07were killed over the weekend by gunmen.
03:09And, of course, we will touch more on that condolences to the family there.
03:13And we are seeing along with the TTPS continue working really hard when it comes to war on drugs.
03:19We saw it in the Gasparilla area where they seized $6.3 million worth in cannabis.
03:25And on Friday in the Felicity area, we also saw where they seized $102 million worth in cannabis.
03:33Now, of course, we have more to discuss on this today. Today is Monday, so we must pull out our
03:39captain with us to give us more information on what's taking place with missing persons.
03:43And, of course, giving us the tips that is needed for us to protect ourselves as well.
03:48We'd like to welcome back Captain Rambarat, who is here with us this evening. Captain, good evening to you, sir.
03:52Hi, good evening, Whitney, and a pleasant good evening to our viewers on Beyond The Tape and TV6.
04:00Whitney, I know I wasn't here on Monday, Carnival Monday, but just to report that I had a great time
04:05outdoors, you know, hiking on the beaches.
04:08Until you put a little juve.
04:09No, I've stepped out of the carnival arena, but I pay close attention to carnival.
04:16And remember the last time I would have gone to Flava Village and witnessed us practicing and doing those sorts
04:25of old persons things.
04:28But with the actual carnival, I thought I was concerned. Our team was on standby. I was anxious.
04:35And, you know, I thought, you know, we would have been called out for drownings and incidents on hiking trails
04:42and being attacked by bees and all sorts of things.
04:47There was only one incident. I'll report on it in a while. But just to say in the opening, Whitney,
04:54congratulations to the West Indies for scoring a massive victory in the start of the Super 8 for this team.
05:03254 in 20 overs is a record total for West Indies playing in T20 World Cup. And congratulations to the
05:12guys. They did a wonderful job.
05:14And I know we talk about safety on our way up the concentration. There's a high concentration of Sahara dust
05:23in the atmosphere.
05:24So we ask those persons who have respiratory ailments, heart disease, to pay particular attention, asthma, to pay particular attention
05:35and wear your masks.
05:36And even though I protected my eyes, it may seem a bit red because I was affected on the way
05:44from south to north by the Sahara dust.
05:47So please pay attention to that, especially in northern that it's completely blanketed with Sahara dust currently.
05:55So I thought I'd mention that. But on the weekend. Stay north. Stay north.
06:04Well, I wanted to mention also that there was a development with respect to the expansion of the lifeguards manpower
06:14and equipment during the carnival period time.
06:18And I was actually on site in Miaru to witness the use of the jet skis, something that has added
06:27another layer of protection to that entire East Coast.
06:30So I know you told me you went up to go sometimes as well, right? Yes, I did on Saturday
06:34and I paid attention.
06:35And you were paying attention to the break in the white top wing. Yes.
06:38Yes. Look, there's one in the back there, right? On the left, right?
06:40So that's not an area to bead. And he came to warn the gentleman there who was, thankfully he was
06:47wearing, he was bidding with a life vessel on and that's great.
06:50So I actually conversed with this lifeguard and thanked him for his services. And he knew that that was a
06:58dangerous area.
06:59He spotted a gentleman there and he came to tell him, you know, that this is a dangerous area.
07:04You've seen the sand. Yes.
07:05Actually seen the sand and the water. So you know.
07:08That's also a sign, right?
07:09That's also a sign, right? Of a current. And I welcome the addition of this, Whitney. You know why?
07:15I think we need to protect lives and we could do more. And you know, this, the East Coast has
07:22a lot of underserved areas.
07:24And this, just having the jet ski to patrol will cause persons to pay attention to where they are in
07:31the water and take stock of themselves.
07:33Yes. Especially if you cannot swim.
07:35Yes.
07:36Please, ankles. And if you want ankles, you know, the waves could knock you.
07:40And you start to panic.
07:41I always say, Miro is nice. I love Miro. I could swim comfortably in Miro. But I pay attention to
07:47the currents and I know where they are at all times.
07:52And I assist families in finding safe bathing spots in Miro. But how was your trip to Toko in terms
07:59of spotting those waves?
08:01Well, I mean, I was very happy, but I didn't really want to go too much in the water when
08:05my daughter, you know, children, they want to go in the water and they are adventurous.
08:09So I had to advise her. You know, I spoke to her before we even went close to the water,
08:14what we're looking at and what she's saying from what you told me.
08:17And she played more in his song. Let's put it like that.
08:19Right. But I met a lot of people in Miro who spoke about beyond the tape and the fact that
08:24it was highlighted and they have learned.
08:26And so they were able to choose safe bathing areas for their own family.
08:31So, you know, it's a continuous education is needed so that people will be enlightened and they will learn how
08:38it is to be safe in any area in Trinidad.
08:41And listen to the lifeguards because the lifeguards were there. And they were very observant and paying attention to the
08:47families that were there.
08:48But I think most of them realized the water was a bit rough. So they didn't really venture out too
08:52much. It was more on the shoreline.
08:54There was one hunter who went in, a retired superintendent, someone who we know really well, retired superintendent, Ruthven Hunt.
09:04He went to hunt in the castle area there and he spent two nights. He got close. I don't like
09:09to say hunter got close. In my case, I will fumble for half an hour or so.
09:14Right.
09:14But this was two nights out.
09:16He just had to get his bearings back on.
09:17Yeah.
09:18But thankfully, we had hunters in the area and they found him making his way out, of course. And, you
09:24know, look at him after two nights, comfortable, bareback. And that is what, you know, being outdoors, you're tough.
09:31Yeah.
09:31Ruthven is a very tough soldier. He did well to manage two nights out. I don't know how many persons
09:37could do that in our forest.
09:38Captain, I was not going to tell you I was not going to look like that.
09:41Yeah. And he's cool and comfortable and he had a hot meal and coffee when he came out. And look
09:46at him. That is, that is years and years of practice.
09:50Yes.
09:50Not getting lost, but being in the forested areas and learning about the environment and not being scared. But you
09:57focus on getting out.
09:58Yes.
09:59Yeah.
10:00Now, I know with regards to that for persons who may not have the experience, like that gentleman may have,
10:06I know sometimes persons will panic, Captain.
10:09And, you know, a person like myself, if I get lost, what am I looking for? Light?
10:14Yeah. No, you just, you have to know basically your coordinates. The easiest one is to use the sun to
10:20get out.
10:21Okay.
10:21Having spent a night out in the forest early in the morning, you look for where the sun is rising
10:28and you try and remember what direction you headed in, whether it was east, west, north or south.
10:35You would know. You would have an idea where the road is.
10:37See, instinct will kick in.
10:39Yeah.
10:39Yes. And then you, in his case, he would have had to know. But then, if I tell you something,
10:47on the first day that he spent in the forest, there was no sunlight on that day.
10:51That's the day we had some overcast weather. So he wasn't able to spot and make use of the sun.
10:57So, in that case, you should just wait.
10:59See, we advise you to sit and wait. Now, the second thing you do is if you're near a flowing
11:05river and you have an idea of the geography of the land and you know you could spot a river,
11:11a river will always, a ravine or a small river will always float to the larger one.
11:16And once you know where the larger one is, you know you're heading in that direction, follow the river and
11:21it will most likely lead you onto a larger river and a bridge.
11:26Where the river flows, right?
11:28Flows, yes.
11:29Not against. How the river flows. And you will eventually get out.
11:33So it's like a leaf.
11:34Yeah. Right? So you throw your leaf in the water and follow the leaf.
11:38I thought that was a movie.
11:39No, no.
11:40I thought that was a movie.
11:41No, no.
11:42And there are several other things we use as well. We would know some of the old chip-ins and
11:47cut-ins and how to spot it and how to look at the root marks in terms of where somebody
11:53stepped over a period of time and say,
11:55there's a cut in this root here and this is the way out.
11:58Because then you will see, of course, the area is a bit clear.
12:01Yeah.
12:02It's not forced.
12:03So like us, like myself, I will fumble for 20-30 minutes if I'm in a strange area without going
12:10to the GPS.
12:10But just fumble a little bit and then get back my bearings. But it could happen to the best of
12:16us at any point in time.
12:18Yeah. Now let's speak a little bit on Gardiner from Malik. What is the update with that?
12:23Well, just to say, Whitney, when these things come up, we immediately come over what's called a blanket of confidentiality,
12:33right?
12:33But what I could do is confirm the incident and say that the authorities are working full speed ahead to
12:41have this matter resolved.
12:43Yeah. And also, with regards to the parents out there, all parents, please, we ask you to listen because this
12:51is something with TTPS,
12:52we want to mention to the public, which we will mention later, that we need persons to please pay attention.
12:58If your children, they are wrong sitting with you, they also listen.
13:01But that will be later down as we move forward.
13:03Now, I know, Captain, with regards to persons now looking to do activities after the season, the festivities are over.
13:11Yeah.
13:11And what could be some of the pointers you could give our viewers?
13:14Well, we had an intern period of dry season and now is the time to be outdoors.
13:18And we want to encourage persons to make use of the outdoors.
13:24I spoke about West Indies cricket and being outdoors is a type of sport.
13:31Yes.
13:31Leisure type sport.
13:33And if you want to relate that to crime, right, and you see these young men being caught up in
13:39violent crimes
13:40and violence while conducting crimes, sports and being outdoors is an outlet.
13:47And I think parents who are listening in, please take your boys out.
13:53Your girls as well, everyone.
13:54But make sure that those boys get a chance to go outside, put time away from the devices,
14:01get some exercise in, let them sweat, let them enjoy the outdoors.
14:07And we always say the outdoors is there to be enjoyed.
14:10You just have to pay attention to the environment and you have to know certain things.
14:15Currently, we enter in the bee season.
14:18So when the dry season starts, that is what you call flowering time.
14:24Flowering and seeds, right?
14:26So all the pretty flowers that they see, we have to be very aware.
14:28Right.
14:29But this is the time now that the bee would begin to store honey in its hive.
14:36And now they're going to maximize the use in terms of the flowers and collecting nectar
14:41and going and store it and going back to the hives to store the honey.
14:48So now you have to be careful.
14:49Because I'm not going to say, back in the day, I used to go and get my nectar for myself.
14:54For yourself, right.
14:55I'm not aware that you're interfering with what the bees are coming for.
14:58Right.
14:59But the bees could be harmful because we have Africanized bees.
15:02Yes, we do.
15:02And they can cause death to humans.
15:06And so we, so just one tip I could start with.
15:10Be careful when you're going into any forested area or any area.
15:14Shagaramus, peninsula, a little log could contain a beehive.
15:17You have to be careful with that.
15:19And then the second thing is we say always carry a rope.
15:23Learn first aid.
15:25Minimum first aid so you can treat with broken limbs, head injuries.
15:30And make sure you keep all your emergency numbers.
15:33You know your numbers.
15:34Keep hunter search and rescue team number as well.
15:37Seven, nine, nine, one, four, five, three.
15:40But be very careful as you go to the beaches.
15:43Walk with your rope.
15:45I mean, I really need to go to hardware because you're only stressing that.
15:49And I think it's important that I have that in my vehicle for any reason.
15:53It's not just going in a forested area or going on a hike.
15:56But where persons could be aware where these bees may be flocking more so.
16:00Well, once you're going on hikes on the northern range or central range
16:06or in the southern range, you will get bees.
16:09Bees can form their hives in things like abandoned tires,
16:13old tires thrown around, old barrels, abandoned houses.
16:19And actually they like to go in the light poles as well.
16:25You know, and they could be found almost anywhere.
16:28But you have to be aware of your environment.
16:31For example, like me, I would hear them before I meet them.
16:36I would hear that buzzing sound.
16:38And it has happened to us on several locations.
16:42Recently, last year, we were in Endeavour on a search.
16:47And there was a beehive in a tire.
16:50And we were able to hear the bee before we encountered the bee.
16:53So you have to be alert in the forest.
16:55You will hear them flying above.
16:57And you really have to be in tune with your environment.
17:01Don't go making noise.
17:03Honestly, I really thought bees would go in high places.
17:06I never knew tires, you know.
17:09Mostly, yeah, close to the ground.
17:11You will get some in the trees where the hollow section of the tree trunk is protected from rain.
17:19You will get some there, but it's mostly, you know, at ground level.
17:23They form their hives.
17:25Interesting.
17:25I never knew that.
17:26Yeah.
17:26Because I was just thinking, you know, mosquitoes will be the ones you'll find in the tires.
17:30But the bees.
17:31Yeah.
17:32Or something.
17:32So if you hear something strange, like something that is humming.
17:34Yeah.
17:35So you hear the humming.
17:36You will hear the humming.
17:37And you just, you just be alert.
17:40And you will see one or two coming being around.
17:43What should persons do if they find a hive?
17:45Yes.
17:46Just call, you could call us or call the Ministry of Agriculture.
17:50They have a hotline for bees.
17:52But if you call us, we'll put you in contact with beekeepers who will come and remove the hive.
17:58Most of the times at no cost.
18:01They're interested in harvesting the honey.
18:03Yes.
18:03So they will remove it for you at no cost.
18:05TNTech, if you have bees in the pools, you have to call TNTech.
18:10They will go and authenticate and plug the hose on the pipes to ensure that the hives are not rebuilt.
18:18All right.
18:18Right now, let's take a look at what's making today's headlines.
18:20See you next week.

20:54What does it have in common?
20:58This.
20:59I-T-I-S.
21:01But what does I-T-I-S really mean?
21:04The suffix itis denotes inflammation of a specified organ or tissue.
21:09I-T-I-S really means inflammation.
21:11How do we combat chronic inflammation?
21:13Through lifestyle changes.
21:15Then and only then,
21:16you make sure you're getting enough mega-free fatty acids.
21:19Always consult a qualified medical professional
21:22before starting any supplements.
21:35Welcome back to Beyond the TV.
21:36If you're not joining us,
21:37we're here with, of course, Captain Ramberat.
21:39And you could give us a call
21:41at 623-1711, extension 1996 and 1997.
21:46Now, Captain, let's talk about the updates
21:47with the missing persons.
21:48Yes, Whitney, and for February thus far,
21:51I'm very surprised.
21:53But, you know, we've had fewer persons
21:56being reported missing in February.
21:58It's a very good sign.
21:59It's something we welcome
22:00because it's less work for us.
22:02But we've only had 14 reports
22:05of missing persons for February 2026.
22:09And out of the 14,
22:10we just have four outstanding.
22:13Of the outstanding persons,
22:15we still have the businessman's son.
22:18That is Michael Espana Ramna.
22:22From the Penal District, remember,
22:24both him and his dad's vikers
22:26were intercepted in Ramzat Antris.
22:29In Penal, they were on their way
22:30from selling burgers.
22:32In the Penal, near the police station,
22:35and they were on their way home,
22:36the vikers were intercepted
22:38and they made off with Michael Espana Ramna.
22:41Thus far, we've had no information
22:44in terms of his release.
22:46But even in this case,
22:48we are under the cloak of confidentiality.
22:52Once it's cases like these,
22:54we restricted in what we could say.
22:57But only this morning,
22:59I was in touch with the authorities
23:01with respect to Michael's case.
23:04So, I don't think it's a question
23:06of us jumping out as yet to assist them.
23:09Right?
23:10But if you have information,
23:12still pass it on to us,
23:13799-1453
23:14or the Penal Police Station
23:17or 999-555.
23:19And then we have
23:22Barry Vinson.
23:23He's still missing from Karenage
23:26and we've had not much success
23:28in finding Barry Vinson.
23:30So, if you have information,
23:31please call 799-1453
23:34or the Karenage Police Station
23:36if you can assist
23:39in locating Barry Vinson.
23:42And also, we have Adelia Hines
23:45who is from Maloney.
23:46She was missing on the 19th of February
23:49and is still outstanding.
23:52So, if you have information,
23:53please call us at 799-1453.
23:56And finally,
23:58the fourth person
23:59who is outstanding
24:00is Selima Mohipat
24:02from Shaguanas.
24:04And some headway
24:06has been made
24:07with respect to Selima Mohipat
24:09and I expect good results
24:10and some results
24:12later on this evening
24:13with respect to Selima Mohipat.
24:16So, with anyone with information,
24:18of course,
24:19with any of those missing persons,
24:20we ask you to please
24:21contact the number
24:22that was given shortly
24:23on your screens.
24:24And as I mentioned
24:25before the break,
24:27Captain,
24:27where the TTPS,
24:28even the Commission of Police
24:29was mentioning
24:30to parents
24:31during the carnival season
24:33that they need
24:34to pay attention
24:35to your teenagers.
24:36Now, some incident
24:38took place
24:38in the Tunapuna area
24:39where two young girls
24:41ages 15,
24:42they were formed
24:43by civilian females
24:45by a quarter party
24:45where they were
24:48clearly,
24:49we're not sure
24:50with regards to the mixture,
24:51but let's just say
24:52it was a mixture
24:54that made them
24:55be in a position
24:56where they couldn't
24:57control themselves.
24:58Exactly,
24:58and they were
24:59in a vulnerable position.
25:00Correct.
25:00And I saw
25:02in the headline news
25:03there, you know,
25:03the presence of ketamine
25:05in the country
25:07or somebody was arrested,
25:09a foreigner,
25:09and that is one
25:11of the type of drugs
25:12that is used.
25:12And molly is another.
25:13Yeah, but ketamine
25:15is one of what you call
25:16the D drugs, right?
25:17Of course.
25:18And I was surprised
25:20to know that
25:20it's here in Trinidad.
25:23But the Commissioner
25:25is quite right
25:27and the police service
25:27is quite right
25:28with respect to
25:30how you manage
25:30your teenagers
25:32and that is what
25:33we've been grappling
25:34for five years.
25:35And I tell you,
25:37the major culprit
25:39really is social media
25:41and the opportunity
25:43social media
25:44has given these teenagers
25:47to interact with me
25:48in an online environment.
25:50And they're making it
25:51seem cool
25:52and it's okay.
25:52And it's okay, right?
25:54And there's a certain amount
25:56of peer pressure.
25:57But nothing really
25:58beats a strong
25:59family relationship.
26:01And I always mention
26:02in programs
26:03that, you know,
26:04typically in Trinidad
26:05and Tobago
26:06in the Caribbean family,
26:08the mother and the daughter
26:09forms a strong bond.
26:12That bond is a loving bond
26:15that is hardly unbreakable.
26:18Yes, we know
26:19what I call
26:20the weanineers,
26:21the teenagers,
26:21will want to move away
26:23from their parents a bit.
26:25All right?
26:26Feel that they're grown.
26:26Right.
26:28And it's natural.
26:30But a strong relationship
26:32is important
26:33and to ensuring
26:35that, you know,
26:36we supervise
26:38our teenagers properly.
26:40And there are things
26:40to look out for.
26:42One is, of course,
26:44the drop in performance
26:47in school grades.
26:49You would notice that.
26:51You would notice them
26:53being by themselves
26:54and pulling away
26:55from family of activities.
26:57Like if you're going by
26:59and they will say
27:00decline and say,
27:01I want to stay home.
27:02They will be on their phones
27:03a lot.
27:05And you have to be able
27:08to detect these subtle changes
27:10and you have to be able
27:11to respond.
27:13But I keep going back.
27:15In every teenage case
27:18we've dealt with
27:19in terms of teenage female
27:20that has gone missing,
27:22the culprit has been Instagram.
27:24Yeah.
27:25You know, in Australia.
27:26Yeah, they banded
27:27under the age of 16.
27:29Right.
27:30And, you know,
27:31and something has to be done
27:33because I tell you what,
27:35I think I mentioned it
27:36with you already,
27:37I'm not sure.
27:38The young children
27:41are so good
27:41that they could
27:44delete Instagram here,
27:46step out of the building,
27:48get another Wi-Fi connection,
27:51reinstall Instagram
27:52and get back
27:53all their messages
27:55and everything.
27:56Yeah, they're so funny.
27:57And there's also an app
27:58that hides apps.
28:01Correct.
28:01So that as parents
28:03you have to be aware
28:04of all these things.
28:05But one of the reasons
28:08why teenagers
28:09have to be supervised
28:11is the extent
28:13to which our young men
28:15are also gravitating
28:18towards violent crime.
28:20You know,
28:20they idolize the gangster,
28:22the community gangster leader.
28:25And it's all because of,
28:28you know,
28:30seeing what they see
28:31on social media,
28:32on Instagram
28:33and all these social media platforms
28:35and believing that
28:37that is the way to go.
28:39Now, Captain,
28:39let's take a look
28:40at what the TTPS
28:41had to suggest
28:42to the parents
28:44of Trinidad and Tobago
28:45dealing with their teenagers.
28:47Now, dealing with troubled teens,
28:49a call to parents
28:51and guardians.
28:52So parents and guardians
28:53are encouraged
28:54to foster open
28:55and honest communication,
28:57create a safe
28:58and supportive environment,
28:59listen actively
29:01without immediate criticism
29:02or judgment,
29:03stay engaged
29:04in their child's
29:06academic
29:06and social life,
29:08monitor online activity
29:09responsibly
29:10and reinforce
29:11positive values
29:13and healthy coping mechanisms.
29:16Also,
29:17warning signs
29:17parents and guardians
29:18should be alert to
29:19sudden mood swings
29:21or behavioral changes,
29:23withdrawal from family
29:24and close friends,
29:25decline in school performance,
29:27aggression
29:28or unusual irritability,
29:31secretive behavior,
29:33changes in eating
29:34or sleeping patterns,
29:36substance use
29:37or association
29:38with negative peer groups.
29:40Of course,
29:40you'll see that
29:41they'll be lashing out
29:42and doing things
29:42that they're not accustomed
29:43to doing,
29:44expressions of hopelessness,
29:47self-harm
29:47and suicidal thoughts.
29:50So these things, Captain...
29:51And I think I dealt
29:52with some of them
29:53online,
29:53you know,
29:54online activity
29:55and I like the one
29:56there about reinforcing
29:57positive values
29:58and healthy coping mechanisms
30:00because I don't know
30:02if I may throw
30:04on my hat
30:05as an educator,
30:06there is something
30:07called your conscience.
30:09But you know
30:09your conscience is built
30:11by steady reinforcement
30:13from your adults
30:14in terms of proper values
30:16and morals.
30:18Now,
30:18you may not use it
30:20with me right away,
30:22but that is stored
30:23and just as you become
30:24older
30:25and you meet
30:26life situations,
30:30you go back
30:31to those moorings
30:32and then it is used
30:34as you get older.
30:36And then they will
30:37start to say
30:38with me just like
30:39her mother
30:40and your daughter
30:41will say with me
30:42just like my grandmother.
30:43Yes, of course,
30:44which is true.
30:45Right?
30:45Ladies and gentlemen,
30:46we take that short break.

32:57at 623-1711,
32:59extension 1996 and 1997.
33:02Now, Captain,
33:03we have some information
33:04with regards to when we open the show
33:06where persons,
33:07loved ones,
33:08and family members
33:09who were mourning
33:10the death of
33:11some of their family members
33:13by gunmen.
33:14Now,
33:14three murders
33:15in under four hours
33:16takes toll to 55.
33:19Three men were shot dead
33:20in two separate incidents
33:22in Valsane
33:23and Eldorado
33:23between Saturday night
33:25and Sunday morning.
33:26The deceased
33:27have been identified
33:28as Jesus Sergeant
33:29Kyle Alexander
33:31and Curtis Peer.
33:32In the first incident,
33:33which occurred
33:34around 9.30 p.m.
33:36on February 21st,
33:37residents of Eldorado Road
33:39to Nopuna reported
33:40hearing loud explosions
33:41in the vicinity
33:42of Marcona Road,
33:44a silver Nissan Titor
33:46who was seen speeding away
33:48from the area
33:48shortly afterwards.
33:50Now,
33:5118-year-old
33:51Jesus Sergeant
33:52and 29-year-old
33:53Kyle Alexander,
33:55both of Eldorado Road
33:56to Nopuna,
33:57were pronounced dead
33:58on arrival.
33:59A third victim,
34:00identified as
34:01Rivaldo Fortune,
34:03was treated
34:03and remains
34:04in stable condition.
34:05A fourth victim
34:06also sustained
34:07gunshot injuries.
34:08Homicide officers
34:10visited the scene
34:10and inquiries
34:11are continuing.
34:13Captain,
34:13so we see
34:14what is going on
34:14with gun violence.
34:15Also,
34:16quickly,
34:17with regards to
34:19Diego Martin,
34:20there were 39
34:21shells recovered
34:22after double murder
34:23in that said area.
34:24Two men
34:25were gunned down
34:26in a brazen ambush
34:27outside their workplace
34:29in Diego Martin
34:30on Friday night
34:31in what police believe
34:32may be a gang-related attack.
34:34Now,
34:35dead are
34:36Christian Achill,
34:3853,
34:40of,
34:41Achill 53,
34:42and Marcus Best,
34:4431,
34:44of River,
34:45River East,
34:47River Estate,
34:48my apologies,
34:48both men
34:49were employees
34:50of Dipstick's
34:51Enterprise
34:52Auto Body Workshop.
34:54Achill worked
34:55as a driver
34:56while Best
34:57was a car wash
34:58attendant.
34:59According to
35:00police reports,
35:01around 9 p.m.,
35:02the two men
35:03were liming
35:03with a third man
35:05at the front
35:05of their workplace
35:06when a silver
35:07Nissan Teeter
35:08pulled up
35:09and a investigator
35:10said a rifle
35:11was pointed
35:11at the group
35:12from the left
35:13rear passenger door
35:14of the vehicle
35:15and multiple shots
35:16were fired.
35:18What I observe
35:20with these murders
35:21is that
35:21in recent times,
35:23I think,
35:23within the last
35:24three weeks,
35:24we've had
35:25three double murders.
35:26So we had
35:27a double murder
35:27in Coofer,
35:29a double murder
35:29in Diggomartin,
35:31and this one
35:32in Eldorado.
35:33And,
35:33you know,
35:35there's a whole
35:35debate going on
35:36about the
35:38stopping of
35:39the SOE
35:40and what
35:41sort of,
35:42you know,
35:43action could be
35:44taken now
35:44that that
35:45has been concluded.
35:47In terms of it
35:48being,
35:48I know every murder
35:50is one too much.
35:51Yes, of course.
35:52But I was doing,
35:53looking at the statistics.
35:54So there was one
35:55while we're here,
35:56there's one in
35:57Manzanilla,
35:58and I understand
35:59that that's related
36:00to some land dispute,
36:02the second we've had
36:03in recent weeks.
36:04But I think
36:06it's running at,
36:07well,
36:07that one would make it
36:0855 days,
36:1055 murders.
36:11So we're running
36:12at one per day.
36:14Which is crazy.
36:15it's still
36:16too much.
36:17And I know,
36:18I met a lot of
36:19roadblocks over there
36:20this weekend.
36:21Which I don't mind,
36:22Captain.
36:23And that has to be
36:24part of the operations
36:25to, you know,
36:26look at situations
36:28and put your man
36:30forward there
36:30and try to stop
36:31some of these crimes.
36:33Now,
36:33we are seeing
36:34where persons
36:35are still in positions
36:36where they are
36:39doing things
36:40contrary to what
36:41the law stands for.
36:42and even though
36:43SOE or no SOE,
36:45it seems like
36:46the respect for
36:47the TTPS
36:48is no longer
36:49the respect for law
36:50is not there.
36:51It's just when I see you,
36:52I'm coming for you.
36:54Right.
36:54And,
36:55well,
36:56that criminal element
36:58is one that has
36:59no conscience
37:00whatsoever.
37:00when I looked at
37:01the murder
37:02with the mother
37:04in Koover,
37:06at Jade Garden
37:06there in Koover,
37:07I said to myself,
37:08those people
37:09had to be,
37:10have absolutely
37:11no conscience
37:12at all.
37:14And then,
37:14killing a mother
37:15in front of their child,
37:17none at all.
37:18So,
37:19it is the characteristic
37:21of the criminal element
37:23now
37:23that they have,
37:25they go about
37:26their business.
37:27it's as if
37:28they want to
37:28end their lives
37:29early.
37:30They take a huge risk,
37:31they don't care anything.
37:33And,
37:34again,
37:35you know,
37:35the police
37:36has to come up
37:37and confront
37:38the elements.
37:39They have to
37:39confront the elements.
37:41Now,
37:41I want to mention
37:42condolences
37:43to the family
37:43of the 13-year-old
37:45young man
37:45who allegedly
37:46committed suicide
37:48at the AGC
37:50complex.
37:50Now,
37:51I know you deal
37:52with teens
37:53and young persons
37:54a lot,
37:55not just with
37:55the missing aspects,
37:56but what are
37:57some of the signs,
37:59Captain,
37:59that parents
37:59can look for
38:00in their children
38:01because,
38:02you know,
38:02as teenagers,
38:03they may not
38:03want to express
38:04or feel comfortable
38:05or the parents
38:06are not open enough
38:07for the child
38:08to feel open
38:08to come to them
38:09to speak about
38:10issues that they
38:11are facing
38:11because some people
38:12believe teenagers
38:13should have no issues,
38:14you have no problems,
38:15what you're worrying about,
38:16you have no bills to pay.
38:17Hearing about
38:19depressed teenagers
38:20is something strange
38:21but it actually happens
38:23a lot.
38:23In fact,
38:24it is said that
38:25during a teenage
38:26years,
38:27you have the most
38:28problems in the world
38:29and you feel
38:29the entire world
38:30is against you
38:31simply because
38:32you are egocentric
38:34and you hope
38:35that the entire world
38:37revolves around you
38:39and you are
38:39the center of the universe.
38:41That's how teenagers
38:42feel, right?
38:42and then there is a lot
38:44going on,
38:45peer pressure,
38:47pressures from the home,
38:49you may have pressures
38:50at school
38:51and then you become
38:52depressed.
38:53But I was reading
38:54about the death
38:55of the 13-year-old boy
38:57and they said
38:57that he was ill
39:00and the Friday
39:02and then he was kept
39:04at home
39:04this Saturday
39:06and he was very ill.
39:08So I don't know
39:09if he became delirious.
39:11So I think
39:12they have now classified
39:13it not as a suicide
39:14but as an unnatural death
39:16because he told his mother
39:19that he heard
39:20his brother calling.
39:21He ran in the direction
39:23of the call
39:23and went over the railing.
39:27So I don't know
39:28if it's associated
39:29with the fact that
39:30his health was deteriorating
39:32as well.
39:33But we have
39:34depressed teenagers
39:35and I think
39:38we're seeing
39:38some of them
39:39committing suicide
39:41and there's always
39:42the helpline.
39:43I think there was
39:45some work being done
39:46with respect to lifeline.
39:48Yes.
39:48I will give the numbers
39:49before we enter
39:50the phone lines
39:51because I know
39:51that we have someone
39:52waiting.
39:53But persons who may be
39:54looking for assistance
39:55not just the teens
39:56and also the teens
39:57who are listening
39:58this is also open
39:59for you as well.
40:00800-COPE
40:01that is 800-2673
40:04the number again
40:05800-2673
40:07or Suicide Prevention
40:09NGO Lifeline
40:10at 800-5588
40:13that number again
40:14800-5588
40:16let's head to the phone lines
40:17call
40:17good evening.
40:20Hello?
40:22Good afternoon
40:23Beyond the Day.
40:24Yes you're live.
40:25Go ahead.
40:26Yes and good afternoon
40:28I'm very upset
40:31concerning
40:32this crime
40:34and killing
40:35and killing
40:36now.
40:37My contribution
40:38towards
40:38the
40:41government
40:42and
40:43who in charge
40:45is to bring
40:46back the
40:46hanging
40:47because they're
40:48too bold
40:49and brisant
40:50and disrespectful
40:51now.
40:52They don't care
40:53about the police
40:53they don't care
40:54about nobody
40:56so this is
40:57that right
40:58now.
40:58You don't have
40:59to wait
40:59on no opposition
41:01or no next
41:02side
41:02because that is
41:03written in the
41:03law
41:04bring back
41:05the hanging
41:06and you will
41:07see what it is
41:08taking place.
41:09I am fed up
41:09I am fed up
41:10I am angry
41:11and I am very
41:12over about it
41:13now.
41:14Every day
41:14you wake up
41:15if I'm murder
41:16no man
41:17we have to
41:18put an end
41:19to this.
41:19Thank you
41:20God bless
41:20we show
41:21you guys.
41:22Thank you so
41:22much ma'am.
41:23Captain?
41:24As much as
41:24we wish
41:25Kola
41:26you know
41:27no change
41:28of government
41:29no change
41:31of government
41:32could really
41:34affect
41:35what's going
41:35on in society
41:36with respect
41:37to violent
41:38crime.
41:39The fact
41:39of the matter
41:40is that
41:41we have a
41:41culture
41:42in some
41:42areas of
41:43Trinidad
41:44and Tobago
41:44where it is
41:45normal for
41:47young men
41:47to sit on
41:48the block
41:49smoke and
41:50drink for
41:51the entire
41:51day and
41:52sometimes in
41:53the evening
41:53they go
41:53looking for
41:54income
41:54maybe to
41:55commit crimes
41:56violent crimes
41:57take jobs
41:58to assassinate
41:59persons.
42:00And as
42:01a team
42:01and we move
42:02through
42:03communities
42:04you see it
42:05you see them
42:06on the block
42:07it's not
42:08prevalent
42:09throughout
42:09Trinidad
42:10and Tobago
42:10but they
42:11are prevalent
42:12in certain
42:12communities
42:13and so
42:14that's a
42:15culture
42:15that has
42:16to change
42:17within those
42:17communities.
42:19Now how do
42:19you go about
42:20changing those
42:21things?
42:22We have to
42:23continue to be
42:24positive role
42:25models
42:26we have to
42:26continue to
42:29ensure that
42:30there is
42:31activism
42:31and there
42:33is an
42:34opportunity
42:35for these
42:36young men
42:36to change
42:37it is the
42:38only way
42:39that we
42:40can really
42:40and truly
42:41get rid of
42:42violent crime
42:43in Trinidad
42:44and Tobago
42:44as it is
42:46it's
42:47stereotype
42:47now for
42:48them to
42:48just simply
42:49head in that
42:50direction
42:51and end
42:51their life
42:52early.
42:53And that's
42:53sad.
42:53You have
42:53another
42:54caller.
42:54Caller
42:54good evening.
42:55All right
42:56pleasant good
42:56evening Mr. Osborne.
42:57Good evening.
42:58Captain.
42:59Good evening.
43:00About three weeks ago
43:02you had an exercise
43:03where you mentioned
43:05that it was
43:07difficult for you to get
43:09signal to make a call
43:10to I think
43:11was a young lady
43:12Pierron.
43:13Do you ever
43:14consider getting
43:16a satellite phone?
43:18Yes we've
43:19considered it
43:20but the way to go
43:21really is for one
43:22of us to get
43:23the funding
43:23to have Starlink
43:25on our phone
43:25and I think
43:26they want to do it.
43:28So make sure
43:28that we have
43:29maximum coverage.
43:30When you start up
43:31I will contact you
43:33I will be
43:33contributing
43:34some money towards it.
43:35All right.
43:35That would be great.
43:36So please
43:37get your information.
43:38Right.
43:39And that will be
43:40well.
43:40come because
43:41Starlink is
43:42quite a bit
43:44of money
43:44but that is
43:45what the
43:46seafarers use
43:47to navigate
43:48like Atlantic
43:49crossings
43:50and Pacific
43:51crossings
43:52and they stay
43:53in touch
43:54they stay
43:55in touch
43:55in terms of
43:56communication
43:57throughout.
43:58Now the caller
43:58had something else
43:59to say caller.
44:00Okay another
44:01thing too
44:01this crime
44:03situation
44:04it continue
44:05because there
44:06is no
44:07consequences
44:08for their
44:09absence.
44:10right.
44:12We have
44:12been
44:12out of
44:13104
44:15legislation
44:15that was
44:16that
44:16tried to
44:17pass in
44:18parliament
44:18within the
44:19last 10
44:19years
44:19have failed.
44:20right.
44:21Right.
44:2224
44:22of those
44:23legislations
44:24was
44:24more or
44:25less to
44:26deal with
44:26the crime
44:26situation
44:27right now
44:27in this
44:28country
44:28and
44:29every one
44:30of these
44:30legislations
44:31except the
44:32bill
44:32amendment bill
44:33and the
44:33bill that
44:34I think
44:34I think the
44:35young lady
44:35that got
44:36killed
44:36right
44:37only
44:3834
44:39of those
44:39bills
44:39three
44:40of those
44:40bills
44:41were passed
44:42right
44:42including
44:43the
44:43bill
44:43amendment
44:44bill
44:44right
44:45something
44:45needs to
44:46be done
44:46all these
44:47other bills
44:47was abstained
44:49by people
44:50in government
44:51right now
44:51thank you
44:53all right
44:53thank you so
44:54much
44:54well he has
44:55a point
44:55and the
44:56thing is
44:56there is
44:57the legislative
44:58aspect to
44:59give the
44:59police service
45:00the teeth
45:00with respect
45:02to the
45:02law
45:02but the
45:04thing is
45:05what are we
45:06doing with
45:07the communities
45:08itself
45:08and there
45:10are changes
45:11that are needed
45:11in the community
45:12a simple
45:13thing like a
45:14mother
45:15accepting
45:15money
45:16from the
45:18proceeds of
45:19crime
45:19you know
45:20that those
45:22things
45:22they've now
45:23become part
45:23of a culture
45:24you have to
45:25understand
45:25what has been
45:26happening over
45:27the last
45:2810 15
45:2920 years
45:30in Trinidad
45:30and Tobago
45:31whereas mothers
45:32would have
45:33never tolerated
45:34any dishonest
45:35act and
45:35proceeds
45:36and accepting
45:37proceeds of
45:38crime
45:38that has
45:39changed in
45:40these communities
45:41and they're
45:41turning up
45:42blind eyed
45:43in some cases
45:44they can't
45:45help themselves
45:45they need
45:46help
45:46they need
45:47help
45:48and we
45:48have to
45:48be
45:49we have
45:50to be
45:50pushing
45:51a culture
45:52change
45:52agenda
45:53so to
45:54save the
45:54lives of
45:55these young
45:55men
45:56if you talk
45:57like I do
45:57I am
45:58welcoming
45:58silots
45:59you know
45:59kola
46:00they hug
46:01me up
46:03but
46:04and if you
46:04talk to
46:05the young
46:05men
46:05it's like
46:07talking to
46:07young brother
46:08young brother
46:09was once
46:10in it
46:10they are
46:11well spoken
46:12they want
46:13to talk
46:13to you
46:14but we
46:15have to
46:15have a
46:16cultural
46:17change
46:17in those
46:18communities
46:19to ensure
46:20that these
46:21young men
46:22go on to
46:22live

48:07any time you leave your keys in the ignition when you pull up to your driveway
48:11you make yourself an easy target for theft and robbery
48:15make it tough for criminals
48:18don't give them a chance
48:20switch off your engine
48:21remove your keys
48:23and stay alert
48:25a message from the Trinidad and Tobago
48:28police service
48:40and we are back
48:41the phone lines are still open
48:43and we had to
48:44call her right now
48:45call her good evening
48:46good evening to you Whitney
48:48good evening to you sir
48:50so when I call you
48:51little sister
48:53because I am over 75
48:55I have gone back
48:59I missed that
49:00you and I
49:00shoulder
49:01shoulder
49:02shoulder
49:03shoulder
49:03and people
49:04I wouldn't call you
49:06kiss you
49:08because we worked together
49:09for a week
49:12if I can call you
49:13now Whitney
49:14I have been
49:17follow up this program
49:18for years
49:20and we have learned
49:21I have a hell of a lot
49:22from the story
49:24Nicola a while ago
49:26spoke about bringing back
49:27the hanging
49:29the hanging
49:29has never left
49:32the present Morgan
49:34has shed some light
49:36on the hanging issue
49:37and we need to have that
49:39in the past
49:40so if I learn
49:42from the program
49:43I just want to share
49:44the information
49:45that I learned
49:46thank you
49:49I wasn't hearing the call
49:51but I know
49:52but he knows you
49:54and he said
49:54you all work together
49:56he's 70 something
49:57I don't know
49:58how that could happen
50:00he given away
50:01well yeah
50:02I work with
50:03a lot of persons
50:04of different age groups
50:05backgrounds
50:07also when I was studying
50:08I tried to get into
50:10criminal justice
50:10so I'm assuming
50:11that probably there is where
50:14but he was making reference
50:16to the hanging
50:19and the Pratt & Morgan case
50:21which changed
50:22the whole dynamics
50:23of changing
50:24but I think those things
50:27are irrelevant really
50:29and I will explain to you
50:30why
50:30throughout the world
50:32the thing about murders
50:36is that
50:37there is no longer
50:39the thinking
50:40that the penalty
50:41for committing a murder
50:43is to lose your life
50:44and if you notice
50:46with many of these cases
50:47now
50:48you know
50:48it's a jail term
50:49throughout the world
50:50for like 15, 20, 25 years
50:53right
50:53and of course
50:54you know
50:55whether you plea bargaining
50:56whether you plead guilty
50:57after some years
50:58and you will get time off
51:00for that
51:00and the issue really
51:02is about restorative justice
51:05because
51:05a human being
51:07committing a murder
51:09at some point in time
51:11may want to repent that
51:12and you know
51:13try and get on
51:14with this life
51:14in a different direction
51:16it has happened
51:16restorative justice
51:18so you don't want
51:20to clog your prisons
51:21you don't want
51:22somebody to lose
51:23their life
51:23because that
51:24loss of life
51:25doesn't really
51:26supposed to be
51:27your jurisdiction
51:28let that be
51:29somebody's jurisdiction
51:30but they're right
51:35the consequences
51:36the consequences
51:38I think
51:39if somebody's
51:4025
51:4225 year penalty
51:44for murder
51:44I mean
51:45that should
51:46what other deterrent
51:47you want to be locked up
51:48in a pen
51:48for 25 years
51:49well some persons
51:50are made up
51:50their mind for that already
51:51you know captain
51:52if I'm not mistaken
51:54even though
51:55persons are asking
51:56for the hangman
51:57to come back
51:58it really didn't go anywhere
51:59no
51:59I think by
52:00if the person
52:01has a life sentence
52:02or the death
52:03I should say
52:04not life
52:04but the death sentence
52:07as a conviction
52:08and it's past
52:09five years
52:10and they have not
52:11committed that
52:12said act of
52:13you know
52:14as they say
52:14the hangman
52:15they cannot
52:16proceed after the five years
52:17they cannot proceed
52:18after the five years
52:19so therefore
52:20the solution
52:20is to complete
52:21all appeals
52:22and final appeals
52:24within the five year period
52:26but we don't have
52:27a judicial
52:28system
52:29that we're cater
52:30for that right now
52:32correct
52:32hence the reason
52:33why we're still seeing
52:34people serving life
52:35we have another call
52:36call a good evening
52:37hey goodnight
52:38goodnight all
52:39yes
52:40yes
52:40yes
52:41go ahead
52:43yes
52:43um
52:44all right
52:44we have the offenses
52:45against the person
52:46act right
52:47and we have section
52:47four of the offenses
52:49against the person
52:49and the capital offense
52:52and punishment
52:53is by death
52:53right
52:54for murder
52:55um
52:55okay
52:56you need to
52:56look at
52:58it's still on the books
52:59so we need to
53:00use it still
53:01you mentioned
53:02Pat and Morgan
53:02but um
53:03remember after five years
53:05he committed a life
53:05right
53:06but it's still on the books
53:07so you can't
53:08you cannot
53:09change it like that
53:10it's still on the books
53:11it's just we didn't
53:12we don't carry it out
53:12and after five years
53:14he committed a life
53:15so
53:16it's still on the books
53:17if you look at the offenses
53:17against the person
53:18section four
53:19you would see it
53:20thank you so much
53:22I think since
53:23Pratt and Morgan
53:23there was one person
53:25who was hanging
53:25in Trinidad
53:26and I can't remember
53:27the person
53:27within the five year period
53:29but you know
53:30that that says
53:31that it could be done
53:32but but Captain
53:33which is to say
53:34if you just see
53:35people getting
53:36hung like flies
53:37sorry to say
53:38well
53:38it will deter people
53:39because it's not like
53:40you know
53:41it's one every ten years
53:42they've seen someone
53:43being hung for murder
53:45but I am not saying
53:46restorative justice
53:47will not work
53:48but we have to have
53:49a serious deterrent
53:50that could work
53:51because it is clear
53:52that the criminal elements
53:54do not respect life
53:55at all
53:56unless in the case
53:58you are prepared mentally
53:59that you're coming
53:59to you know
54:01die
54:02to die
54:03but right
54:05so I agree
54:06in fact I supported
54:07that penalty
54:08but I was talking
54:09about what's happening
54:10in the world
54:11with respect to murders
54:12first degree
54:13second degree
54:14and that sort of thing
54:15now the thing about it
54:16is that
54:17we have to fix
54:18the judicial system
54:20to get away
54:21from the Pratt and Morgan
54:22and to get
54:23what's on the books
54:24to work
54:25right
54:26because you can hang
54:27on a innocent person
54:28yes
54:28you can hang on
54:29a innocent person
54:30but make sure
54:31the person
54:31go through all their fees
54:33and I think now
54:34apart from quarter fees
54:35there are different
54:37humanitarian
54:39groups that steps in
54:41and they have to check
54:42and double check
54:43and clear them
54:44and a whole set of things
54:45I know we've been
54:46through a lot of that
54:47but rarely and truly
54:50these guys who commit
54:52these violence
54:53violent crimes
54:55believe that there is
54:57no absolutely
54:58no consequence
54:59I don't know
55:00if you saw the video
55:01that is bamboo
55:03where the gentleman
55:04a criminal
55:06would have stood over
55:07the guy with
55:08what appears to be
55:10either
55:1080, 47
55:11or 15
55:12and just shut him
55:14down
55:14similar
55:15similar to the one
55:17in
55:17Vancouver
55:17and when you have that
55:20taking place
55:20you know
55:22that these guys
55:23don't have a conscience
55:24yeah
55:24and how do you
55:26why would you want
55:28somebody without a
55:29conscience
55:29to fit in
55:30in a society
55:32that is made up
55:33of adults
55:34older elderly
55:36children
55:37how can they fit in
55:38and how could you
55:39restore the mind
55:40exactly
55:40that has been
55:41damaged
55:42you know
55:43persons say that
55:44you know
55:45some of these
55:45young individuals
55:46who are involved
55:47in these heinous crimes
55:49their mind has already
55:50gone
55:51it's burnt
55:51it's damaged
55:52there's no coming back
55:53but
55:55I can't see the future
55:56and I can't predict
55:57if persons will change
55:58or not
55:59we have another caller
55:59caller
56:00good evening
56:00in the final
56:01call
56:02good evening
56:03hello
56:04yes go ahead ma'am
56:06yes good evening
56:07and good evening
56:08to Trinidad and Tobago
56:10my contribution
56:12is concerning
56:13the death penalty
56:14I am an elder
56:16and I remember
56:17when they used
56:19to have
56:19the death penalty
56:20functioning
56:22and it didn't
56:23used to have
56:24all these murders
56:25and I think
56:26if the
56:27the death penalty
56:28come back
56:29it will deter
56:31this amount
56:32of murder
56:32and I am
56:34encouraging
56:35the government
56:36to really
56:37get back there
56:38because Trinidad
56:39has gone
56:40out of hand
56:41it is so sad
56:43to know
56:43this is what
56:44my country
56:44has come to
56:45thank you very much
56:47have a blessed night
56:48everyone
56:48thank you so much
56:49ma'am
56:50so she's on the side
56:51of the death penalty
56:52and you know
56:53I can't blame
56:54citizens
56:55of feeling that way
56:56because you know
56:57really and truly
56:58they literally
56:59fed up of blood
57:00on the streets
57:03captain I don't know
57:03what to say again
57:04when it comes to crime
57:05in Trinidad and Tobago
57:06and those who are
57:07standing behind the guns
57:08and taking innocent lives
57:10especially
57:10and any gun violence
57:12that is in the mix
57:13of things
57:13we don't know
57:15how far we could go
57:16and your final quotes
57:17because we have a few seconds
57:18before we wrap things up
57:19captain
57:19well I just want to
57:21ask for that
57:21to be safe
57:22if we remember
57:23make yourself hard targets
57:25you know
57:26people are snatching chains
57:27in events
57:29be careful
57:30make yourself hard targets
57:31and remember
57:32that the police
57:34is on your side
57:36call your police
57:37if you suspect anything
57:39or if you have
57:40information with respect
57:42to you know
57:42assisting
57:43in the reduction
57:45of crime
57:45yeah captain
57:46thank you so much
