00:00Bernie, one of the great things, too, you got a chance to work with a guy, you know, and you
00:05coach Schottenheimer.
00:07Talk about that relationship that you had with Marty Schottenheimer.
00:11You know, people, I don't think they respect enough what that man did over 200 victories in his coaching career.
00:18Just a legendary coach. What was that relationship like with you, with him when you guys were there in Cleveland
00:24together?
00:24Well, thank you, Dan, for asking that question of all the things we could probably talk about.
00:30And I cut me off if I get too wordy here, because it actually also will besides talking about Marty.
00:38OK, and my awesome love for him. And back in the day, there was the phrase Marty ball.
00:44OK, and and Marty won more regular season games than just about anybody.
00:49And to get to AFC championship games and win playoff games, I we all want to win the gold medal
00:57like the United States did today.
00:59And Canada, I'm sure, is disappointed coming in second and stuff.
01:02But coming in second to John Elway at the time was crushing at 62 years of age.
01:09You could now somewhat get some consolation and kind of a little bit of happiness, I think, out of that.
01:15But but Coach Schottenheimer and what he meant to me in terms of his toughness and a lot of people
01:21say, OK, that was 40 some years ago.
01:23And people talk about Marty ball then. And I am such a big believer that the more things change, the
01:29more they say the same.
01:31And people are saying the NFL football has changed so much and the game is so much different.
01:36The running schemes, the the the toughness, the way of running the ball at the line of scrimmage, it's really
01:45come back in the last few years.
01:47And the way Marty was really equal with 50 50 running and the play action game.
01:53And I know he got somewhat criticized at times for somewhat conservative, conservative ism later in games.
02:02But he always got you there. And now look at the way the most successful offenses in the league are
02:09right now.
02:10Sean McVay with Matthew Stafford becoming the NFL MVP.
02:14They ran 13 personnel, one receiver, three tight ends, a majority of the snaps this past season.
02:22Marty Schottenheimer was doing that back in the 80s.
02:25And with the way the running game has come back, Marty was really one of the forerunners into that.
02:32And it really added to my game.
02:35And to think about some of the coaches I had between Howard Snellenberger, Don Schuller, Marty Schottenheimer, Bill Belichick, Jimmy
02:43Johnson, three times.
02:45I mean, that's it's just an honor to be to learn from guys like that.
02:50And Marty probably does not get enough of the credit that he really deserves.
