00:00:06The speed, the sound, the freedom of defying gravity, and all the laws of physics, skateboarding
00:00:21taps into the soul. It's rhythm, flow, heart, connection. It's for you, me, everyone.
00:00:34A medium for creative, playful expression, the magic rolling board.
00:00:41But for years, the skate scene has been dominated by guys.
00:00:47Yeah, yeah, burn it all down.
00:00:49For a long time, the biggest compliment a girl or a young woman could get in skateboarding is you skate
00:00:55like a guy.
00:01:00Especially in the 80s and even 90s, girls were not encouraged to skate. It was the boys' thing.
00:01:05Typically, there was maybe one girl at the skate park, and usually it was me.
00:01:10But now, it's a whole new world for women who skate.
00:01:14They're doing things I literally never fathom girls would ever do.
00:01:17You see people flying over 10 feet and spinning some 20s.
00:01:21It brings me to tears sometimes because it's that incredible.
00:01:25And the X Games has emerged as the key contest in launching the sport's next superstars.
00:01:31Reese Nelson, Shiloh Kotori, Jada Ward, Marissa True, the future of women skateboarding.
00:01:39A lot of young names, a lot of teenagers, they're the best in the world.
00:01:45The level is just getting higher and higher, so you have to get better and better.
00:01:49My main goal is to be the best that I can be.
00:01:52My dream for the future is to take three gold medals because it's, I'm pretty sure, never been done and
00:01:58I'd be the youngest person to do it.
00:01:59This is what I was dreaming about, seeing them have these opportunities to skate and to show the world what
00:02:05they can do.
00:02:11Rise up like I'm watching through the fire Rise up as the swing's getting higher
00:02:16Rise up, now I'm gonna rise up Rise up high
00:02:24Rise up
00:02:48I think the idea of mentorship to me is the most gratifying.
00:02:58I mean, yes, I love skating and I enjoy doing my own thing and learning new tricks here and there,
00:03:02but that can't be my sole focus anymore.
00:03:05Go shot the world, go shot the world
00:03:07A friend of mine had been skating with Reese and said, you have to see this little skate.
00:03:12And so I invited her to the ramp.
00:03:15Go shot the world
00:03:21Go shot the world
00:03:23I watched her progress and it was just, it was like a meteor.
00:03:28To the point where it was just undeniable that she's just an amazing bird skater.
00:03:33Of the highest caliber.
00:03:40You know, I gave her the keys to the castle, let's put it that way.
00:03:45I don't remember anything before I started skating.
00:03:49That's just what I do. That's like become my life.
00:03:53I'm Reese Nelson and I'm 11.
00:03:55I skated bird.
00:04:00I skated bird.
00:04:01Skated bird.
00:04:02It's the funnest.
00:04:06Tony's ramp is 13 and a half feet high.
00:04:08It's two feet of bird.
00:04:09It's like skating up the wall.
00:04:12The first contest I did was the Virglar.
00:04:19I won this trip.
00:04:21Two years in a row.
00:04:24Ten year old Reese Nelson.
00:04:26And then I got silver from the X Games last year.
00:04:29Which made me the youngest X Games medalist.
00:04:32The bigger, the bigger, the bigger, the bigger, the bang.
00:04:35I love skating.
00:04:37When you're skating, you can't really tell that you leave the ground.
00:04:40It doesn't feel very much different than like being in the air when you jump.
00:04:44You knew who he was, obviously.
00:04:49The greatest of all time.
00:04:51The owner of 16 X Games medals.
00:04:54The most legendary skateboarder of all time.
00:04:58Tony Hawk.
00:05:00Not really.
00:05:04What are you working on?
00:05:07The tricks that are going to be in the lines for the X Games.
00:05:09Yeah?
00:05:10Yeah.
00:05:11What are the last few tricks you're doing?
00:05:13Back three, switch back three, kick flip board slide, or kick flip nose slide.
00:05:19You go back three, switch back three, then kick flip board slide?
00:05:23Yeah.
00:05:23Wow.
00:05:24The line is just like a string of different tricks put together.
00:05:28In park, like you actually need a line to get to the wall that you want.
00:05:32Which is like part of the reason that I like vert.
00:05:35Because like you can just do whatever you want, like wherever.
00:05:39Kick flip board slide, or kick flip nose slide.
00:05:41They're like the same thing.
00:05:44I wouldn't know because I can't do either one.
00:05:47The most fun contribution I have to her skating is I know that there's something she wants to learn and
00:05:54I've done it or I can do it.
00:05:56Because I know that she's going to commit to it. Like she will follow through with it.
00:06:04When I'm spinning, it kind of just feels normal. It's just like an air.
00:06:13.
00:06:18Reese is just extremely bright, period.
00:06:21I mean, she is really good at math.
00:06:24Like, she does things in her head.
00:06:25.
00:06:30I've always been good at math.
00:06:39I like showing off.
00:06:42I know the feeling.
00:06:44I've been trying to show off for 40 years of my life.
00:06:47I'm tired, Reese.
00:06:48It's your turn.
00:06:56I need to pack my bag because I'm going to Budapest,
00:06:59a World Skate Competition to qualify for the Olympics.
00:07:13My name is Arisa Truett.
00:07:15I'm 14 years old from Gold Coast, Australia,
00:07:17and I skate park and vert.
00:07:22Park is competing in a skate park.
00:07:24There's a concrete bowl with different features.
00:07:27It's awesome, but that is just my favourite.
00:07:30If you know Arisa, she annoys everyone
00:07:32because she learns tricks fast.
00:07:34Like, I mean, in, like, three goes, eight goes,
00:07:36or two, three goes.
00:07:40I found Arisa at our skate park.
00:07:42In a previous life, I was a pro skateboarder.
00:07:46And now I coach.
00:07:48Her parents couldn't afford to send her to our school,
00:07:50so we gave her a scholarship.
00:07:54I begged them, I said,
00:07:55just promise me, just give me one year with her.
00:07:58She will be a generational talent.
00:08:01Just like Tony Hawk.
00:08:10I remember when Tony Hawk did the 900.
00:08:14Tony broke the walls down, you know what I mean?
00:08:16Like, he did it first.
00:08:17Making skateboarding history.
00:08:26I want to do that as well.
00:08:29A 900 is when you go up the ramp forward
00:08:33and you do a 900 rotation,
00:08:36and then you come down the ramp forward.
00:08:39It's two and a half spins in the air.
00:08:47She decided she's going to be the first girl in the world to do that.
00:08:50And I said, all right.
00:08:52In my mind, I just know I could land a 900
00:08:55because I visualised it so many times
00:08:58and I was like, yeah, I can do it.
00:09:10It's kind of crazy.
00:09:11You could see she was getting tired,
00:09:13but she just keeps going and going.
00:09:16We call her the robot because she's like a robot.
00:09:18We call her the robot.
00:09:50I can't believe you just did that.
00:09:54Oh, my God.
00:09:56How do you feel?
00:09:57Do you want to see it?
00:10:00Cool.
00:10:02It feels amazing and really shocking
00:10:04to be, like, the first woman in the world to do a 900,
00:10:07but I just, like, knew it in myself
00:10:09that I could just do it if I pushed myself.
00:10:14I'm ready for this year's X Games.
00:10:16I'm really hoping I land my 900 next.
00:10:42Oh, my God.
00:10:44Come on, first try.
00:10:46Wow, Shiloh, you made that look so good.
00:11:02I'm Shiloh Katori, and I'm 15 years old,
00:11:05and I'm a street skater.
00:11:06Why do we want to grow up?
00:11:08Everything changed.
00:11:10I'm not having fun.
00:11:11Street skating makes the whole world one big skate park.
00:11:14With everyday obstacles, the imperfections of them
00:11:17are the fun and the challenge of them.
00:11:19When you're at a street spot, like a rail or a stair set,
00:11:23the feeling is, like, unexplainable.
00:11:26Falling in love feels so far away.
00:11:29Why do we want to grow up?
00:11:33So beautiful.
00:11:34Look at these mountains all around you.
00:11:36Mountains and palm trees.
00:11:38Yeah.
00:11:38Like, that's the perfect combination.
00:11:41Watch out, car, because I will wax your ass.
00:11:45I'm excited to see, like, what L.A. brings for me.
00:11:48I wanted to be here now because I just
00:11:51really wanted to skate these parks
00:11:53and with these people before the X Games
00:11:57because I just felt like that would really push me.
00:12:00This is just where I need to be.
00:12:01This is such a beautiful, safe area.
00:12:07Yeah.
00:12:07So much safer than, like, say, Tampa or whatever.
00:12:14Nobody with gunshots running through our front yard anymore?
00:12:18No.
00:12:19This is it.
00:12:20Oh, my gosh.
00:12:21It looks really cute.
00:12:22Yeah.
00:12:23It is really pretty.
00:12:24The problem we kind of ran into is in Florida.
00:12:27She really didn't have anybody to skate with there anymore.
00:12:29Of her ability, she just really needed to be in an area that was, like, more hungry for street skating,
00:12:35and that was Los Angeles.
00:12:37Hit it, girl.
00:12:38Oh.
00:12:41Right now, in female skateboarding, it's progressing so fast.
00:12:44There are people on your heels every day.
00:12:48And, like, we have to, like, try to keep up.
00:12:53Okay.
00:12:55Got it.
00:12:55Oh, my gosh.
00:12:57No!
00:12:57We never fight.
00:12:58It's so easy.
00:13:00But we never fight.
00:13:03I hate it when time saves you.
00:13:06My mom has always really helped me so that I can follow my dream.
00:13:11You know, she was there in all my skate sessions.
00:13:14Hurry up.
00:13:15What's going on here?
00:13:16The cops.
00:13:18What happened to your foot?
00:13:20I jumped off a roof trying to video your ass.
00:13:23You better be glad you got that trick, too, girl.
00:13:28She's always been a fantastic mom, and we've just always been really close.
00:13:33What are y'all guys doing?
00:13:34Oh.
00:13:37As a single mom, making all of this happen by myself for her, I was just one person.
00:13:42I could only work so much.
00:13:45She helped me at the salon.
00:13:47Like, she shampoos, and then she blow dries, and then I cut the hair, and she checks them out.
00:13:53So that, like, then we could skateboard on the weekends.
00:14:02We're just always together, like, every minute of the day.
00:14:09You'd think by how all the times that we've moved, we would have gotten better at it.
00:14:15You know, the work ethic that she has is just, if you want to do something, then put everything that
00:14:21you have into it.
00:14:22And that's kind of just what we've done.
00:14:24Okay.
00:14:26All of this work that we've been doing, and it's been thousands and maybe a hundred thousand.
00:14:33Like, it's been a lot of money.
00:14:35You know, I hope it all pays off for her.
00:14:38I hope you stay here for a lot of years.
00:14:41Me too.
00:14:45It is a beautiful day in the great state of Utah for Tony Hawk's Burt Alert 24.
00:14:52The premier skateboarding Burt contest in the world.
00:14:57Utah, are you fired up for some Burt skateboarding?
00:15:00It's gonna be a good day.
00:15:01There's old talent and new with a lot on the line.
00:15:15I'm good, how are you?
00:15:17Oh, yeah.
00:15:19Oh, today I'm gonna go, um, skate.
00:15:21Yeah, yeah.
00:15:22Okay, bye.
00:15:24That's my smart kid.
00:15:28I've got three that I'm coaching, but we're travelling with six.
00:15:31These are kids and they're in a professional sport, so I never do anything individually.
00:15:36Like, I'm always like, let's get the group together.
00:15:38Let's make sure they're having fun.
00:15:40Where's my acai drink?
00:15:42I just put it in front of you, students.
00:15:45Jada is my best friend and I always skate with her.
00:15:48I go to school with her and I see her basically every day.
00:15:51Put it on the angle here.
00:15:53People are gonna stare at us while making TikToks.
00:15:58If I didn't have Jada, I would have no one to tell my gossip to.
00:16:03The boys, they get too annoying, so I need somebody like her.
00:16:06We just like the same person.
00:16:12My name is Jada Ward.
00:16:14I'm 16 years old.
00:16:16Trevor Ward is my dad and my coach.
00:16:19Sometimes that can be hard.
00:16:24Realistically, it's only been three years since she stood on a skateboard properly.
00:16:29And then she fell in love with what I fell in love with and then she just got the bug.
00:16:37At the same time, Rissa had already been doing lessons and Jada came in and then she started taking it
00:16:41more seriously.
00:16:45Last year, I was an alternate for X Games and I found it super exciting because I was just happy
00:16:50I even got to go to X Games.
00:16:52But it was frustrating being an alternate.
00:16:54This year, I want to make it to X Games.
00:17:163pm would be heat one competition and then maybe 3.30, 45 would be our competition.
00:17:23This is a massive for Jada because last year she came 10th and she ended up being first alternate to
00:17:29X Games.
00:17:30And I was like alternate a bunch of times.
00:17:32So that's the person that misses out.
00:17:33So this is a huge turning thing for her and where she's at.
00:17:38Alright, we'll leave in 20 minutes?
00:17:40Yeah.
00:17:40Well, we've got to go through runs.
00:17:43Alright, Jada.
00:17:44Okay, go.
00:17:45So what are you going to do?
00:17:46A stale fish?
00:17:47Yeah.
00:17:47A stale fish.
00:17:48You need 300 rum because it just doesn't work.
00:17:51I can't do that.
00:17:52Why?
00:17:53Have you tried it?
00:17:54No, I just can't let it down.
00:17:55I don't want to do that.
00:17:56If you just go and do that, right?
00:17:57I know I'm not doing that.
00:17:58I already know that.
00:17:59But the thing is that you're mentally stuck on it.
00:18:01No, I'm not.
00:18:02Well, you keep saying I can't do things, right?
00:18:04You can do all these tricks.
00:18:08Well, okay, I know that.
00:18:10That's where I'm saying you need a front lip.
00:18:13You need things like that.
00:18:14Well, I haven't done a front lip for so long.
00:18:16I'm not doing that.
00:18:16Just don't.
00:18:17I fell in it last year and don't do this.
00:18:19Yeah.
00:18:19Dad, please just.
00:18:22Like, just try and work with people rather than working against them.
00:18:25No.
00:18:26Hey, I'm not doing this now, mate.
00:18:28If you're going to be like this.
00:18:30Because it started already.
00:18:32Okay?
00:18:32So why don't you work it out?
00:18:34Ready?
00:18:34Go.
00:18:36Have a go with it.
00:18:38I don't want to start with all this.
00:18:40But you have to start.
00:18:41Fine, I'll go from here to.
00:18:42Stop.
00:18:43I'm going.
00:18:44You're being ridiculous, mate.
00:18:45Stop.
00:18:46But the thing is, is you've started.
00:18:47Okay, Dad, just go.
00:18:48Right?
00:18:49You can't just delete everything because you can't.
00:18:52I didn't.
00:18:52I just deleted the meter.
00:18:53I don't want to do meter after.
00:18:55Okay.
00:18:55Don't get mad.
00:18:57I'm not mad.
00:18:58I haven't been mad.
00:18:59Okay.
00:18:59You're the one that's acting.
00:19:00Okay.
00:19:00So you've got to be aware of that.
00:19:03Okay.
00:19:03Just keep going.
00:19:11You all right?
00:19:15Good.
00:19:16We're going to leave in, like, a couple of minutes?
00:19:18Yeah.
00:19:19Yeah, good.
00:19:20All right, let's go, boys.
00:19:21You got all your stuff?
00:19:23I'm really nervous.
00:19:26If I don't like it this year, then I'm done.
00:19:30Um, I forgot what I was saying.
00:19:34I need to hear the accent.
00:19:37Same.
00:19:40Yeah, the crowd is fired up.
00:19:43We are inside, ready to go at the glory that is about to be
00:19:46the women's skateboard birthday.
00:19:54And then, of course, you can't have the bird alert without Tony Hawk's historical ramp.
00:19:59The ramp.
00:20:06Tell me about the details.
00:20:0972 feet wide.
00:20:1011 and a half foot transition.
00:20:13Two feet of bird.
00:20:13So that means it's 13 and a half feet tall.
00:20:19It's scary.
00:20:20I don't want to fall through the gap.
00:20:22I think it's scary.
00:20:23I don't think anyone does.
00:20:25There's a lot on the line.
00:20:28We've done so well to get here.
00:20:29Give me a kiss.
00:20:30I love you.
00:20:31This is Jada's first finals for Verdala, which is really cool.
00:20:36This is my third.
00:20:38Let's do it.
00:20:39Let's stay on.
00:20:40You know the job.
00:20:42Utah, are you ready?
00:20:45All right, first up is Aaliyah.
00:20:48Oh, man.
00:20:49I'm nervous as hell right now.
00:20:52I hope that they just do what they're meant to do.
00:20:55That's the biggest thing.
00:20:56I find I'm done.
00:20:58Freak out.
00:20:59Arissa, true.
00:21:01All right, here we go.
00:21:03She was last year's winner.
00:21:06All right, Arissa.
00:21:08She's been putting on the gnarliest tricks you could do on a skateboard.
00:21:11Yeah.
00:21:12Man or woman.
00:21:13Got a robot.
00:21:15Oh!
00:21:17How does she do that every go?
00:21:19What, a week ago did the 900?
00:21:21Yeah.
00:21:21I can't even fathom that.
00:21:23Next up, Jada Ward.
00:21:25Jada!
00:21:26Hard run.
00:21:28My dad.
00:21:30He's not the one skating the red.
00:21:32Let's go!
00:21:34He's also the opposite stance.
00:21:36So he's like, do this trick here and I'll be like, I can't.
00:21:39I'm the opposite stance.
00:21:41So I just made up my own run.
00:21:44And it worked better and that's the one that I landed.
00:21:47Get him, Jada!
00:21:47Yeah!
00:21:51That was sick.
00:21:52That is a scary trick to commit to.
00:21:59She's making this look really easy.
00:22:01Wow!
00:22:03Did she put a hand down?
00:22:04Yes.
00:22:06Amazing.
00:22:07Jada Ward.
00:22:08That was awesome.
00:22:10Yeah, Jada!
00:22:11Let's go!
00:22:14Final results right here.
00:22:17Come on, buddy.
00:22:19Marissa True taking the top spot.
00:22:21Yes!
00:22:23The top eight skaters go to the X Games in Ventura.
00:22:30I'm so proud of you, mate.
00:22:32Made it.
00:22:33That was insane.
00:22:35She likes to do X Games now.
00:22:37I'm so happy because that was my goal, to go to X Games.
00:22:41I'm so excited we're going to X Games together.
00:22:43I know.
00:22:51This is, yeah, this is anger.
00:22:54And that's your favorite emotion?
00:22:56No, it's my second favorite emotion.
00:22:58Anxiety is my favorite.
00:23:00Mm-hmm.
00:23:01Is there a doll for that?
00:23:02Yeah.
00:23:04It was out of stock.
00:23:59You're supposed to do your mood.
00:24:01You write down your mood now.
00:24:02Yeah.
00:24:03I just don't cover your hands.
00:24:09I covered the face, so you can't even tell what I am.
00:24:14It can be hard to stay motivated, but I don't think I should take any days off.
00:24:18I think I should skate every day.
00:24:21Apparently, that's not good for you.
00:24:23Yeah.
00:24:24Yeah.
00:24:27How you doing?
00:24:28Getting too antsy.
00:24:31It's crazy to box.
00:24:34My husband and I are constantly trying to pull her back in the sense that it's like, you're an 11
00:24:39-year-old child. Like, this is not a job. Life should be fun.
00:24:43It's just a bear's wheel.
00:24:45It's just a bear's wheel.
00:24:46You'll like it.
00:24:46It's not scary at all.
00:24:50It's just stuff like this, like, when you're really high. Skating is, like, very, it's also, like, not scary, because
00:24:56I have all my pads and everything.
00:24:58I don't know, just my board being there makes me feel better, too.
00:25:03I like Disneyland and I like the rides, but I don't like taking a day off.
00:25:10So, it's not as exciting as it should be.
00:25:24So, Shiloh here, and this is Donna Wong, the Toy Machine filmer, and we are currently headed to go street
00:25:32skating and try to get a bunch of clips.
00:25:44And street skating, one of the best parts is finding street spots. You have to look at your surroundings, like
00:25:51the run-up and the landing, and how you can make it skateable.
00:25:54It's kind of like geometry, but way more fun.
00:26:02Oh, Shiloh!
00:26:05I do feel like the leap of faith in doing all of this for Shiloh is definitely paying off.
00:26:12Whoa!
00:26:13She's already evolving, and, like, tricks are progressing, and, like, just the friendships that are forging, and the notoriety of
00:26:21people knowing who she is.
00:26:23I know!
00:26:24Street skating wasn't really just, like, a choice. It's just where my heart wanted to go.
00:26:29Oh, my God!
00:26:34Shiloh!
00:26:36Wow!
00:26:36Oh, my God!
00:26:42Okay, so...
00:26:42I think we need to be in this one.
00:26:44Which one?
00:26:45The one that we're not in?
00:26:47Yeah.
00:26:47Awesome.
00:26:48Oh, I'd like to take that spot, if you don't mind. I'm so sorry. Thank you, Carr. I'm a jerk.
00:26:54I appreciate it.
00:26:57So, look at the women's division and tell me what all they're giving prizes for.
00:27:01First gets 2,000.
00:27:03Okay.
00:27:04Second gets 1,000.
00:27:05Okay.
00:27:06Third gets 500.
00:27:08Okay.
00:27:08Okay.
00:27:09So, you certainly want to be there at this event.
00:27:11Yeah.
00:27:13Today, I'm going to the contest, and, um, I'd say the goal is kind of to win some of the
00:27:22money.
00:27:24That would help with the move and everything.
00:27:26Yeah.
00:27:28Um...
00:27:29We moved all the way to Los Angeles just so that I can follow my dream.
00:27:33And, oh, my gosh, it was so expensive.
00:27:35So, we need that money from the contest to keep me in Los Angeles.
00:27:39So, it's just a little intimidating.
00:27:43I mean, I guess I could potentially do the death race.
00:27:465,000.
00:27:47Oh, you're doing the death race.
00:27:49No, I mean, like...
00:27:49Bad to throw you down it.
00:27:50Just kidding.
00:27:53Street skating and contests are very different worlds.
00:27:56So, I started in contests, and I love them, but now I find myself pulling more to the streets.
00:28:01And with contests, there's money, but there's also a lot of pressure.
00:28:05And with street skating, there's less pressure to be perfect and more raw, in my opinion.
00:28:10I mean, it's worth $5,000.
00:28:12I know.
00:28:13I'm driving the financial portion of this because I've watched some of her friends kind of go through this that
00:28:19were very successful.
00:28:21I would say we really need to, like, financially plan so that she has something when she's done with this.
00:28:29That is the biggest thing, to just really try to make sure she has something when she's done.
00:28:50The first X Games was the Extreme Games in 1995.
00:28:54X Games first put women in skateboarding in 02.
00:29:06When I won my first X Games gold medal, that was huge for me.
00:29:10But the prize money was $2,000 for women for first and $5,050,000 for men.
00:29:17I made more money doing a random signing and babysitting the men bird skaters' kids than I did winning bird.
00:29:29They kept promising, the money will get better next year. Nope. Next year, nope.
00:29:35Like, we're actually doing legitimate tricks, so we should give legitimate money.
00:29:39Some of these women could not even pay for their hotel and food based off winning.
00:29:44And I got the girls together to boycott.
00:29:47And in the end, that more than doubled our prize money. I think we had $5,000 for first that
00:29:51year.
00:29:51So there was progress.
00:29:58Make some noise for all the ladies at X Games Women's Bird.
00:30:08Winning this much amount of money is, like, awesome.
00:30:11You know, it's like, pays the bills, you get coverage and everything.
00:30:14It's just like the life I want to live, you know?
00:30:25That's not true.
00:30:26Hi, it's Shiloh.
00:30:27And I just kind of wanted to update you guys on how it was going practicing for X Games.
00:30:31They have released the street course on their Instagram.
00:30:34There's a lot going on.
00:30:36There's like an obstacle every two feet.
00:30:38It's handrails and stair sets and gaps.
00:30:40And it really forces skaters to really search for your kind of skating in the course.
00:30:46I've already started to plan out my tricks and my runs.
00:30:49And I'm like, yes, this is exactly what I can do.
00:30:59We're like one week out from X Games,
00:31:01so just deep in practice mode right now.
00:31:04The X Games, a great platform for people to see her ability
00:31:08and for all of that hard work to pay off.
00:31:10You're trying to be the queen of skate.
00:31:12I don't know, I just like winning.
00:31:16I just want her to be happy and just be a kid.
00:31:19I'm just a little bit silly.
00:31:21OK, I'm pretty solid.
00:31:23The thing I'm most worried about in X Games
00:31:25is not landing my run.
00:31:29Oh, just get that.
00:31:35I've been skating all day and doing questions and filming.
00:31:39I just want to go on my phone.
00:31:43Come on, get up.
00:31:45Girls is weird, like, you know what I mean?
00:31:46Like, it's definitely got a different characteristic
00:31:49to men's skateboarding.
00:31:50And you've got to be like, hey, get the hell in there.
00:31:52Like, what are we here for?
00:31:54There's a medal, money.
00:31:55It's your honor of, like,
00:31:57showing the world that you're the best.
00:31:59I can come off like an asshole, but I don't care.
00:32:01I'm here to win.
00:32:02Like, let's do it.
00:32:14Oh, I hope she does good.
00:32:16She's going too.
00:32:18Today is the day before X Games.
00:32:21I've been struggling because the course
00:32:23is much bigger than what I anticipated
00:32:26when I was looking at, like, the AI photos and everything.
00:32:30So it's just kind of been pretty difficult
00:32:33to put my run together.
00:32:42I'm proud of you.
00:32:43Go kill this horse, baby.
00:32:50Oh, God.
00:32:52Come on, baby.
00:32:54It's such a legend indeed.
00:32:57For the love of God.
00:33:01Jesus Christ.
00:33:03I'm proud of you.
00:33:33The course is very, very difficult.
00:33:35And so now it's like, what are we going to do?
00:33:41Yeah.
00:33:42Um.
00:33:48There has been breakdown, like, crying moments,
00:33:52beating our head against the wall.
00:33:55We've gotten word that, like,
00:33:57there may be an energy drink company
00:33:59that's, like, potentially looking at Shiloh.
00:34:02So, like, that would relieve so much financial stress.
00:34:05But it definitely adds so much more stress to this contest.
00:34:27I feel like I get in my head a lot,
00:34:30and then I just don't believe in myself.
00:34:33I come up with so many different scenarios
00:34:36of what could go wrong.
00:34:40It's just...
00:34:43I just have to think, like,
00:34:44okay, this is the run that I'm doing.
00:34:46That's what I have to do tomorrow,
00:34:48and that's that.
00:34:56It is day one of X Games Ventura 2024,
00:35:02as we welcome you now
00:35:03to Women's Skateboard Street Elimination.
00:35:07X Games is the literal top.
00:35:09If you are a young woman and you skate,
00:35:12X Games is the largest platform possible
00:35:16for you to showcase your skills.
00:35:17Fifteen skateboarders with the top eight
00:35:19advancing to our final.
00:35:21It is an absolute youth limit.
00:35:23And while we're talking about the youngsters,
00:35:25we need to mention my favorite skateboarder
00:35:27on the entire planet, Shiloh Katori.
00:35:32Now dropping in,
00:35:33currently our top-ranked qualifier,
00:35:36Liz Akama.
00:35:37She's bringing in these technical tricks.
00:35:40She's got the most unique bag out there.
00:35:42Is this it?
00:35:45Oh, the back Smith.
00:35:47She, of course, is moving on to the final
00:35:49and may be the one to beat.
00:35:52You okay?
00:35:54Don't think about practice.
00:35:56Okay.
00:35:57You got it, baby.
00:35:58Go out there and land everything you know you can land,
00:36:01trick by trick.
00:36:02Don't put the pressure of the whole run
00:36:04onto your shoulders.
00:36:05Just trick by trick by trick by trick.
00:36:10That's all you can do.
00:36:12Now, Miyu Ito,
00:36:14sitting in fourth place.
00:36:16That was proper.
00:36:19You know you've got a lock.
00:36:21Nice front people there on the rainbow rail.
00:36:25You got Shiloh!
00:36:28Come on, you got it!
00:36:30Got it, honey!
00:36:32Is this my dog dropping right now?
00:36:33Oh, yeah.
00:36:34Is this the dog?
00:36:37Shiloh Pettori.
00:36:39Oh, God dang it!
00:36:42She can still clean it up.
00:36:43Certainly hope so.
00:36:44Oh, no.
00:36:45It's all right, babe.
00:36:46Come on, just keep going!
00:36:48She's got some big tricks up her sleeve.
00:36:50Yes!
00:36:51Yeah!
00:36:53You know what's this?
00:36:54Hold on to it, come on!
00:36:58Oh, here we go.
00:37:01Oh, no!
00:37:04It happens.
00:37:08It's not really the way that she saw this going down this weekend.
00:37:13Last year, she showed us some massive tricks.
00:37:16So, a little bit of a disappointment.
00:37:23Oh, no!
00:37:24Chilo just missed the cut.
00:37:27That was sick.
00:37:28That was sick.
00:37:28It was sick, but bummer.
00:37:30Oh, no!
00:37:31Oh, no!
00:37:37Oh, no!
00:37:40Oh, no!
00:37:43That was sick.
00:37:44That was sick, but bummer.
00:37:46Oh, no!
00:37:55Oh, no!
00:37:59Oh, no!
00:38:02Oh, no!
00:38:03Oh, no!
00:38:19Seemingly, everyone in town has made their way over here.
00:38:22Some really talented names in women's skateboarding.
00:38:26But all of a sudden, Rhys Nelson,
00:38:28one of the best skateboarders dropped, by the way.
00:38:30I don't know if you heard.
00:38:31Yeah, it's a bummer.
00:38:33Mind-blowing.
00:38:34Why?
00:38:35That's what we want to know.
00:38:51Her pants are falling.
00:38:53She's a bad skater.
00:38:55What kind of advice do you have for her?
00:38:57For her?
00:38:58Yeah.
00:38:59To get better or not skateboard.
00:39:09Sometimes it does feel like the dream life.
00:39:11And other days, it does not at all.
00:39:15Tell me about those days.
00:39:17Like, just, like, hard days and stuff.
00:39:21And, like, working hard and stuff.
00:39:24She's gonna absolutely demolish herself doing that, though.
00:39:30Right before the ice cans.
00:39:32It got really stressful with how much I was skating.
00:39:48I skipped the X Games this year, because I was just taking the summer to have fun and be a
00:39:53kid.
00:39:54What we're doing is not unheard of.
00:39:55It's not common.
00:39:56And I appreciate that, especially hearing other parents.
00:40:00But, like, for us, ultimately, it's about Reese being happy and enjoying the sport that she loves.
00:40:07And if she's not having fun as an 11-year-old kid, something's not right.
00:40:13The alternative is people just burn out and they quit.
00:40:16And I don't want to see her lose the love of skating, which is something that she truly enjoys.
00:40:24Ready?
00:40:25Bang!
00:40:29Bang!
00:40:29Bang!
00:40:32I've seen that Khloe Kim took a year off.
00:40:34And Simone Biles took some time off.
00:40:37And it worked out for them.
00:40:39So, time out.
00:40:41She needs a break.
00:40:42This is what we're doing.
00:40:43I'm sorry if anybody's disappointed.
00:40:45But she's a kid and we're gonna let her be a kid.
00:40:49Like, full stop.
00:40:53What's happening, everybody?
00:40:54Brandon Graham joined alongside Amelia Brodka and the one, the only, Tony Hawk.
00:41:00We've got a good one coming up for you.
00:41:03Women's Skateboard Vert Best Trick.
00:41:09Women's Best Trick in Vert is here for the first time, which I'm really excited I get to compete in.
00:41:14I'm really hoping I land my 900 and to take three gold medals, which is a really big goal.
00:41:19This year, we've built up this anticipation around the 25th anniversary of Tony Hawk's 900.
00:41:26And we're so excited for this one because everyone in skateboarding can't stop talking about Arisa Trudeau.
00:41:45That is true.
00:41:46She landed the first women's 900 a few weeks ago.
00:41:50Arisa did land the first ever women's 900.
00:41:54But she did it, like, skating with her homies.
00:41:57But to do it in a contest, no pressure, right?
00:42:00So can Arisa Trude repeat gold?
00:42:04We will find out.
00:42:04I know, uh, what rider you're excited about, Amelia?
00:42:07You've got ten minutes.
00:42:09All right, so, just gotta do a trick that's gonna beat everyone else.
00:42:14Best Trick's a crazy one.
00:42:15It's never happened for girls before in X Games.
00:42:17I'm planning to do the 900 because I want to be the first woman to land the 900 in a
00:42:22competition.
00:42:23You've got to do the Switch Me Twist.
00:42:25She's gonna do the Switch Me Twist just so that she can win the medal.
00:42:28And then she's gonna try and do the 900.
00:42:30And hopefully it's like when Tony did the 900, they extend the timeout and keep the TV going and watch
00:42:37the little girl do it.
00:42:38And it's the same thing.
00:42:40And they play Arisa for the next 25 years.
00:42:42So do the Switch Me Twist and then it's just on for nine.
00:42:45An unreal crowd has invaded the vert ramp here.
00:42:50So we start things off with Juno Matsuoka, who's coached and mentored by Moto Shibata.
00:42:56Nice. Kickflip Indy.
00:42:58Yes.
00:42:58That is a great way to start off her best trick here.
00:43:02Just putting down tricks she knows she can do.
00:43:04We've seen her do it, but, you know.
00:43:05She's working with the strategy.
00:43:07Here's Asagawa.
00:43:10Oh, there it is.
00:43:12Oh!
00:43:12Frontside kickflip.
00:43:14Frontside air.
00:43:15She barely got her feet on.
00:43:18Here now, Jada Ward.
00:43:19Last year, Jada was an alternate for women's vert.
00:43:22So she is so hyped to be in the actual contest this year.
00:43:26I'm going to be doing a nose-grunt job.
00:43:28And the reason I want to do it is because my dad used to do it in competitions.
00:43:32And no girl has done that yet.
00:43:34So I'll be one of the first.
00:43:36Going for it now.
00:43:37Oh!
00:43:38It's so hard to get your feet in the right position after it comes off with a coping like that.
00:43:41Arisa True getting ready to drop in.
00:43:45Arisa True!
00:43:46Let's go, Arisa!
00:44:00Here we go.
00:44:01Are you ready?
00:44:02Arisa True.
00:44:06Oh!
00:44:07Spinning a 900 is so terrifying.
00:44:11That is true.
00:44:12The move is a two and a half spin.
00:44:14You kind of have to spin your body on a certain plane in order to be coming in with your
00:44:19board
00:44:19and your body in the right balance coming down the ramp.
00:44:22And you're blind to the ramp twice in the spin.
00:44:25And a lot of it's just on faith and confidence.
00:44:29She is not afraid to just stay up there and wait for it.
00:44:33Do you want to try some switch me twist?
00:44:35Are you all right?
00:44:37Arisa True.
00:44:38Arisa True.
00:44:39Attempt number two.
00:44:40Okay, Arisa's back up on the roll end.
00:44:42That can only mean one thing.
00:44:43She's going to spin it.
00:44:49Oh!
00:44:52Unable to put it down.
00:44:55When you're learning nines, you usually want to carve it.
00:44:57But she's already learned it, so she's going all out.
00:45:00Jada has a nose grind.
00:45:02Nolley back shove in.
00:45:06Oh, Jada Ward!
00:45:08Yeah, baby!
00:45:10Nose grind.
00:45:11Nolley shove in.
00:45:13Yeah!
00:45:17Love you.
00:45:19That was sick.
00:45:20Jada!

00:45:29Here we go.
00:45:29720.
00:45:31Oh!
00:45:31She gets it!
00:45:32And no hand down until she does it.
00:45:37Jalene!
00:45:39What do we do?
00:45:40I was really trying to commit that.
00:45:42I know.
00:45:42You will the next one.
00:45:44And I'm like this.
00:45:45Oh!
00:45:46You want to try anything else?
00:45:48You want to try one switch-mictwist and then do the 900?
00:45:53So, you just want this.
00:45:56Alright.
00:45:57That strategy went out the window.
00:46:00She's just going for 900.
00:46:01No shit!
00:46:02It's all or nothing.
00:46:02All or nothing.
00:46:04I'm like, let's do switch-mictwist.
00:46:05She goes, oh, she's not even going to try that?
00:46:07She's like 900 or not.
00:46:09Okay.
00:46:10Just like...
00:46:10Go for bro.
00:46:11Alright.
00:46:13It's stressful at all.
00:46:16Arisa True.
00:46:17Right here, right now.
00:46:21It's a good setup here.
00:46:23Here we go.
00:46:25Oh!
00:46:26She is committing to the landing.
00:46:28Arisa, we got four minutes.
00:46:30Faster spin!
00:46:34That's a good setup right there.
00:46:37Oh!
00:46:38One footer.
00:46:39Wanna go again?
00:46:41What?
00:46:42You're just not spinning fast.
00:46:44That's it.
00:46:44It's not spinning right.
00:46:46It's spinning fine.
00:46:47That's alright.
00:46:48Next one.
00:46:52So close!
00:46:54Yeah, you can still go.
00:46:56Two minutes, two and a half minutes left.

00:47:23Go get a gold.
00:47:24Come on dude.
00:47:25You got it.
00:47:26This is what X Games is all about.
00:47:29Can Arisa put this down?
00:47:33I'm hard enough.
00:47:36I'm strong enough.
00:47:40I've come so far.
00:47:44Not getting on.
00:47:47I'm here.
00:47:50I'm here.
00:47:53I paid with blood.
00:48:00And love.
00:48:18Obviously all eyes on Arisa true.
00:48:21Could she put it down?
00:48:23And Mia Kretzer ends up with gold.
00:48:26The youngest competitor and the youngest gold medalist in X Games history.
00:48:43It happens.
00:48:45It happens.
00:48:45It happens to us all.
00:48:46I know but I'm supposed to be able to do something.
00:48:50But it doesn't matter.
00:48:51No.
00:48:52I don't.
00:48:53It'll be the trick that I can do.
00:48:56Here comes the deer.
00:48:59I'm here.
00:49:11Here comes the deer.
00:49:12You got it.
00:49:21I'm here.
00:49:21Come on.
00:49:22After that, you're great.
00:49:23I'm here.
00:49:23I'm here.
00:49:24perfectionist worked against her maybe we won't see two more gold medals
00:49:34day two of x games the wind is howling at about 30 miles an hour it adds a challenging element
00:49:43i'm worried about theresa it's hard with the wind you need a lot of speed for the
00:49:50big tricks and the wind makes you have less speed so you can't land the trick you want to do
00:50:01we welcome you now to the women's skateboard park
00:50:13so many youngsters some x games rookies all eyes though will be on arisa tree
00:50:22is truly changing the game you'll see her put together a really powerful line so now run number
00:50:30one owner of two x games gold medals including one in this event last year the one and only
00:50:37arisa true boning out getting up on the sub box the judges definitely want to see that
00:50:43oh yeah you're right just take it easy you got this man don't even think about that
00:50:51her body's so tired her brain's so tired i hope she comes through with the goods run number two
00:50:59didn't have a full pool on run one does that change going up on the soapbox yes
00:51:04oh that had the makings of a really great run and it definitely feels like the wind is picking up
00:51:14so here now our defending gold medalist arisa true can she do it on the final run i think we're
00:51:21seeing
00:51:21arisa up on the roof wow well my like recipe for success i guess is just to like close my
00:51:29eyes for a
00:51:30little bit i think about it i visualize my run i was just like it's now or never
00:51:35let's get our rest everywhere i go everywhere i go
00:51:40i'm gonna take the throne
00:51:42let's go feel if it's a ball
00:51:46i'm taking all control
00:51:50is my time
00:51:54yes what a way to make a statement
00:51:58oh yes
00:52:03see if she can keep her speed up
00:52:11oh my gosh
00:52:15540 right into the back three kickflip indy wow
00:52:18oh
00:52:21picking up some change on the top deck there but and then 50 50.
00:52:25last 10 for arisa
00:52:29backflip revert
00:52:32big move for the end
00:52:34oh my gosh no way cab frontside no slide revert can't even believe it it was so technical
00:52:42okay
00:52:4487.33 for arisa
00:52:4787.
00:52:48arisa true gets another gold medal
00:52:51oh my chills arisa is one in a century i would say she has that it factor she is the
00:52:58champion
00:52:59i'm really excited that i won the competition i love doing x-games it's like one of my favorite
00:53:06competitions and also just like challenging myself to try new things what a moment for
00:53:12arisa and we're not done yet she's going for double gold potentially too with women's skateboard vert
00:53:23and what better way and what better time to kick off the future of skateboarding
00:53:28than right here right now as we bring you women's vert
00:53:38and we start things off with 16 year old ozzy jada ward definitely a really gifted vert skater
00:53:46yep i skated with trevor ward jada's father who's also here coaching her and arisa
00:53:51her and arisa are best friends arisa's success in skateboarding is pushing me a lot because
00:53:57she's better than me so she helps me like 540s are a battle for me and she could do them
00:54:04perfectly
00:54:04every time so she would help me a lot and help me understand it then i know that i can
00:54:09do what
00:54:10she can do so here's jada ward hasn't been able to put a full run down wins the 540. so
00:54:17if she does
00:54:18this it could be interesting everything she does she's doing it with power
00:54:24twist yes so clean from jada she just got that one dialed but it looks like she's been doing it
00:54:29her
00:54:34whole life
00:54:35get it jada come on
00:54:38oh wow thank you 540. on the buzzer that was perfect jada ward x games rookie but clearly here to
00:54:45stay
00:54:4671.33 yeah that was a solid run
00:54:52yeah three years ago she couldn't even really skate you know what i mean like in three years she went
00:54:57from riding a two-foot mini ramp to doing 540s on a vert ramp with the best girls in the
00:55:02world with a
00:55:02crowd of 10 000 people watching her is like yeah i'm pretty proud of what she's achieved like that's um
00:55:12it's a big thing
00:55:13i think my biggest dream is probably just to like
00:55:22go through a study where i win like every single comp like how arisa's going she just wins and wins
00:55:28but i think all of these young ladies will be chasing a girl with a gold already to her name
00:55:34earlier today in park arisa true rolling in
00:55:40oh yes getting the kick club in the going alley-oop traveling in the opposite direction that she's
00:55:48spinning
00:55:50yes there's that big squares with a little burial in there she's giving us a show here
00:55:56what a run here what else can she do here really am so proud of the progress that these girls
00:56:04and
00:56:04women are making and have made nice 360 and me they are shining they're shining so bright
00:56:10what a show-stopping performance for arisa true 87 for arisa true so with that arisa true
00:56:24a second gold medal i mean double gold last year double gold this year the first skateboarder ever to
00:56:32successfully defend double gold these are my two x games medals from this competition this is the vert
00:56:40one and this is the park one and i'm just so stoked tonight i think arisa and i are going
00:56:46to celebrate by
00:56:47going for a swim in the pool and getting food and then probably going to bed tomorrow we're gonna go
00:56:53skateboarding and every other day no days off
00:57:01my hope for shiloh in this moment is to make great friends and to take this as far as she
00:57:07can
00:57:08get killed it great job out there competition is just one end of skateboarding to move the culture
00:57:15you've got to go out in the streets and record for months maybe even a year of going out and
00:57:21battling and showing those slams i love seeing you out there you look so comfortable most people be
00:57:26like how did you do that and that lives forever and i think that's the type of pro that shiloh
00:57:31is
00:57:31going to become she'll do contests but they'll be secondary to what she does in the streets yeah go ahead
00:57:40that fall shiloh was invited to represent the vans team on a tour through new york
00:57:47she is now filming a video for toy machine and thrasher i think shiloh katori is going to be
00:57:52legendary i really do
00:57:55run oh and now almost 16 shiloh has also started to drive whoa whoa right here lady see the arrow
00:58:10we're gonna die two months later reese nelson was invited to an x games hosted vert pro championship
00:58:18one and only reese nelson after a year of not competing she accepted i mean you can see it in
00:58:26her skating she's not trying to copy what anybody else is doing she's not trying to learn other
00:58:30people's tricks she's literally forging her own path and i love that jada ward was invited to the same
00:58:43competition where she won her first medal she is really putting it all out there she is getting
00:58:52more mature she's a competitor she just wants to be the best and arisa true flew from the x games
00:58:59to
00:59:00paris france where she won the olympic gold for park skateboarding australia's newest gold medalist is
00:59:07also australia's youngest the only woman to land 900 ever women playing on the same field doesn't
00:59:14mean they have to play the same way it just means they get to play as a metaphor for us
00:59:19as a society
00:59:21it's the possibility of getting past all these old systemic thought patterns and celebrating
00:59:28the way they play how does a 14 year old want to celebrate becoming the olympic champ
00:59:33the gift i asked for my parents if i like one was if i could get a pet duck because
00:59:39ducks are really
00:59:39cute and i really wanted a pet dog oh you want a duck so we're going to bring you some
00:59:49ducks oh yeah i've been
00:59:50wanting ducks
01:00:08i'm
01:00:14i'm
01:00:32i'm
01:00:33Oh, I dare seize us, you'll die.
01:00:41Oh, for nothing, I'm in that stopping.
01:00:47Let's hog the spotlight.
