00:00The last lift before a race, you try to be calm.
00:07To be yourself, to feel good in yourself,
00:13to be able to bring the best performances out of you.
00:17It does not get any better than this.
00:20At the end, it's a very instinctive thing what we are doing
00:24because you cannot do anything new on the race day.
00:27You've done already all of the trainings and you just have to bring that.
00:32Brunging down between the two giant pillars of Dolanite Rock
00:36in Cortina Danfetzel.
00:40Cortina is always an honor.
00:42It's something special.
00:44It's the race.
00:46Well, good morning, ladies and gentlemen, to Cortina Danfetzel.
01:01Summer is just coming up here.
01:03It is going to be an amazing race day in this historic location.
01:07Cortina is heritage site of UNESCO together with all the Dolomites.
01:14When you look around here, you should stop every peak
01:20because it's 360 view.
01:24It's absolutely stunning.
01:25This beautiful racetrack sort of meanders its way down
01:30into some of the most beautiful landscape.
01:32It is right in the heart of...
01:34It's a bit of a jewel in the Women's World Cup calendar.
01:37It's a symbol and it's a place in itself.
01:47And I think it's the most important
01:49of the fascist view of all the World Cup.
01:53It is
02:19To come here to Cortina or to win Cortina is a dream.
02:27Good, Sofia!
02:29Here is a great direction.
02:31Sofia Goccia, the Kellen Speed Queen, just showing us how it is possible today.
02:36My first race that I won in Cortina was in January 2018,
02:41before the Olympics in Pyeongchang.
02:43I won in front of Lavon with third of the Cifri.
02:46Great, Sofia Goccia!
02:49Sofia Goccia is an incredible talent.
02:52She is the sort of wild child of women's ski racing.
02:55She is all about going full gas from top to bottom.
02:59Pretty fast onto the Tefana,
03:01just diving down through those two pillars of Dolomite Rock.
03:04The second race was in 2022,
03:10before the Olympics in Pyeongchang.
03:13Remarkable run from Sofia Goccia.
03:16She is out in front of the whole story Cortina.
03:24L'anno dopo, ancora, ho vinto la prima discesa.
03:28Rapidissima Sofia Goccia!
03:30Grande prova a guadagno nel finale!
03:32Posso dire che la discesa libera Cortina
03:35è sempre una emozione pazzesca.
03:38Impressionante!
03:39Nessuna come lei è in grado di aizzare la folle.
03:42L'avete visto qua, era velocissima!
03:46Quiero giocare!
03:54Hallo!
03:55Hallo, Emma!
03:56Hallo!
03:58Warst du erfolgreich?
04:00Ja, warst du.
04:02Super!
04:04Gewonnen habe ich.
04:06Bist du allein gefahren, oder?
04:07Ja.
04:08We are always at the same time, we are always at the same time,
04:12what we are going to do, what we are going to do, what we are going to do,
04:16and then the first training is always a bit exciting,
04:22because everyone is a bit of a new land,
04:26especially after a trip in St. Anton, when we come here,
04:31a bit of a high speed.
04:34But I think that we are very good at each other,
04:39and then we are going to go from training to training,
04:42and hopefully it will be fine.
04:45I want to see how much faster I am.
04:48I am a specialist,
04:50so that I am 3 seconds faster than I am in training.
04:54Let's see.
05:04I would not say that you have a special setup for the Tufana.
05:08It is on the Tufana so that you have to do with the snow conditions.
05:13There are a few passages that are very fast,
05:17and of course there are many passages that you have to do well.
05:23It is always a bit of a surprise when you come here,
05:26to see how the Tufana really presented.
05:28But she is again in a very important state,
05:31and what the girls are doing,
05:32it makes it really fun to go down.
05:35Cortina was a place where we lived in agriculture and pasture,
05:56as many localities here in the mountains.
06:00Then after Cortina,
06:02immediately after the war,
06:04it became a place where we started to build houses,
06:08it became a place for the rich people.
06:14But the clue was the event of the Olympics in 1956.
06:18Cortina had a great popularity.
06:20It was the first Olympics broadcast by RAI.
06:25L'Elmedica Frida Dancer,
06:27one of the most favorite,
06:28certainly one of the most fast-paced races in the world.
06:32In direct,
06:33so it was an important event,
06:36seen in television from all the world.
06:47And there, Cortina,
06:48the popularity has gone a lot.
06:51So Let's do it!
06:53The Women's World Games
06:55are the first one here in Cortina in 1974.
07:03The most beautiful memory of my career
07:05was the victory at Cortina
07:09at the Olympics in Le Tufana,
07:10which is something to be indescribile.
07:12My first race I won't win here at Cortina, in my house, in 20 years, in 1990.
07:19In that year, men did not have any race, and since the 1993-1994,
07:26they started only women's race, and it became a fixed race for women's Coppa del Mundo.
07:34So, in 1993-1994, it became a fixed race, and from there, every year, they did the race, and only women.
07:53I've known Tinamase for many years. She was a great champion in Slovenia,
07:58and still, now, she holds the record of points in the World Cup, so, chapeau, so much of her hair.
08:13My memories from racing in Cortina and winning it, that was a hard way.
08:17It's very hard to be fast.
08:19Everything's going according to plan.
08:22Then, when you understand it, when you have great skis, great material,
08:26it worked out at the end, so I managed to win once.
08:29Marza hits her best form, just in time for the Olympic Winter Games.
08:35I'm very proud of that.
08:42Now, I work for Eurosport as an expert.
08:44I'm trying to give my views, and the best part about it is that I can share what I've learned over many years.
08:52For many years, I've been in skiing, and people want to know from us who are living that,
08:58and share our thoughts, our sensations, our feelings.
09:01Buongiorno.
09:06Yes, ma'am.
09:07Good morning.
09:08How are you?
09:09Fine.
09:10Me too.
09:21Good morning.
09:22Buongiorno, Luca.
09:23What are you doing here?
09:24Good morning, everyone.
09:25Today I'm a 4-runner.
09:27Why don't we check the slow?
09:28Yeah, let's go.
09:29Let's go.
09:59Ciao, I'm Tina Maze, and today I will take you to ski this Volna Olympia with me,
10:16Let's go!
10:25The Olympia Slope is famous to start with this parabolic.
10:29Right after the start, you have this parabolic that goes a little bit up.
10:33Then you slowly have these two waves before the Tofana Schuss.
10:38The famous Schuss, which they all know televisively.
10:41It's very beautiful because you see these two mountains.
10:44This has definitely the courage to go into hockey.
10:49The stone is close, you jump and you really have this drop
10:54that brings you to 140 km per hour.
10:57And you have this jump on Duca d'Aosta, which is very close where people can watch
11:02and it's very spectacular also for the viewers.
11:05It starts to go a little bit more in the steep and more technical turns before the Grande Curva.
11:10It's very easy to lose time because the waves are coming and if you're killing the speed there,
11:24not bringing it down somewhere it's missing to the finish.
11:29Then you come to Romerlo, where it's very important to have the maximum speed for this flat finish spot.
11:35You have to face the final jump, which is normally always here,
11:42and then you have to stop in the area here.
11:45This is the area of arrival.
11:47And you have to wait and see the time.
11:50You have to wait and see the time.
11:51You have to be in front, to be in front.
11:52You have to stay on the front.
11:55There are many girls of Ski that love Cortina.
12:04That is the time.
12:05For us it's great when they come to find us.
12:09We are a group of cooks, 7-8 restaurants and each year we treat the World Cup together.
12:23Everyone makes a dish and it's really a party.
12:27It's an honor for us to be together and do the best we can do.
12:32Because people come from the whole world, it's important to see what we do in Cortina, the products of the territory.
12:40The forest walk is ready.
12:45Cortina is famous to have all of these things together, being treated very well as a guest, having great food, wine, aperitivo.
12:56Then you go out, you get perfect skiing.
13:00The crowd is ready for the race.
13:03It's time for the Women's Downhill World Cup in Cortina.
13:09I think Italians lately are more present than before because they have such a strong team and people are coming here to follow them more than usually.
13:20So we see bigger crowds.
13:24Everybody coming to watch ski racing, which is fast and intense.
13:29If ski racing fans expect big things, they will get behind their athletes, that's for sure.
13:34I'm very excited, very nervous every time they go.
13:46Anyway, I have a lot of respect for these athletes who do something incredible.
13:50It's thrilling for us.
13:51Our daughter is getting her first downhill World Cup start today and it's such a special town to be doing this in.
13:58In Cortina, a beautiful town, perfect host to the Olympics next year.
14:02We're excited about it.
14:03We're excited about it.
14:04We're excited, too.
14:05We're excited.
14:06We're excited about it.
14:07The pool.
14:08At this point, the pool.
14:09We're excited about it.
14:10And we're excited about it.
14:11Here in Cortina, there is a great strength for the ski.
14:21The citizens are all very rich because women here have given us lust to our country.
14:28Then there is the race and the research, especially from the young people,
14:34where they are trying to get some of the athletes or a firm made on the sled or the ski.
14:42I'm waiting for Sofia Goggia to race.
14:47I have an Instagram channel which is Sofia Goggia Only the Brave, which is a fan page for her.
14:54Today there is the downhill and I very hope that she will win.
15:00Cortina is home soil and to see athletes win here is super special.
15:07To get to Cortina, to feel the boating of people is a unique emotion.
15:15Cortina is not just a race.
15:18For us Italians and for me it is something special.
15:23It is the race.
15:25The Spannung is coming from the start.
15:30A little bit of nervousness.
15:32But I think we are prepared.
15:35And we need to get good walks in the field.
15:40To get the right and do some cool thoughts.
15:41Brookings come in.
15:42To get the right after for the race.
15:43We don't want to be aware of those moves.
15:44It has to be found.
15:45Let's go.
15:46Let's go.
15:47We can do some things from Europe.
15:48Let's go.
15:49Let's go.
15:50Let's go.
15:51Let's go.
15:52If you wish.
15:53Let's go.
15:54Emma Eicher next to go for Jeremy.
16:10She's had improving form in the last couple of seasons.
16:15She's starting to find her way as a downhiller.
16:18Loses a massive amount of time.
16:20Not the ideal line at all through this section.
16:24It's not very successful.
16:29On the Tufaner, we definitely have to be ready for the top to the top of the Tufaner to the top of the top of the Tufaner.
16:36And a short delay is a big return behind the Tufaner.
16:5434 kilometers per hour.
16:57Pick off Lee making this look easy.
16:59Literally looks like she's floating.
17:03Beautifully controlled flight by the Norwegian.
17:09Flies the final jump to lead by more than half a second.
17:13Cortina is like a love-hate relationship.
17:16You really have to focus a lot to be able to attack because everyone loves this slope.
17:21Therefore it's really difficult to be fast because everybody is comfortable.
17:25So you really have to risk it and ski really really good and clean to be faster.
17:30It depends a lot on the days and how you feel in a certain day.
17:39There were races in the World Cup where I could play until the second half of my start.
17:46There were races in which the concentration...
17:50The tension was at the stars, so the concentration level was very difficult to reach.
17:59Your mindset is crucial.
18:01You have that extra danger that you have to get over in terms of you can lose your life racing downhill.
18:07And about making sure that you put yourself in a positive position as possible from a mindset perspective
18:13before you throw yourself out and try and rely on technique.
18:16I'm happy to see you.
18:18I'm usually in the start to look at the chronometer, I breathe.
18:24I breathe.
18:25I breathe.
18:26I breathe.
18:28I breathe.
18:29I breathe.
18:30I breathe in the distance.
18:32I breathe.
18:37I breathe.
18:38I breathe in my head all the curves.
18:41We are just about ready to start.
19:00And then I'm going.
19:01Here we go, Sofia Goggia, three vittories on Olympia Dele Tofane in free run.
19:07Good attacking line from Hootan, head first down the Tofanasius.
19:16What an exciting downhill we have today, let's action right from the word go.
19:24Oh no!
19:25Oh!
19:26Laura Guberani rarely makes a catastrophic mistake when she's racing.
19:42The Italians in the grandstands are on their feet.
19:47Listen to the noise levels.
19:49Pirovino enjoying this course, really trying to fight to keep it as clean as she can.
19:59And then the super-gigant, Alessia Ophiara.
20:08Will she get the reward?
20:10The green light comes on.
20:13Goggia sets up for the final jump, flies it and leads the way in Cortina D'Ampezzo.
20:1833,95.
20:19Davanti a tutti ha guadagnato nel finale come previsto.
20:25It's all time.
20:30Winning here by Sofia having Federica in third position in downhill, it's something amazing
20:45and it's a great kick-off for the Olympics in 2016.
20:57And today's winner, per Italia, Sofia Gocia!
21:06She's my favourite and she's my idol.
21:08She won!
21:09In Cortina, in home soil, so it's better.
21:13But first, in honor of the victory...
21:21With the victory of the Olympic candidature, it was a really good.
21:26Now Cortina renews it again, another time.
21:34Cortina is really working a lot to make the structures work for Olympic Games.
21:40It's great to see it sort of coming back full circle.
21:45And again, one of those iconic slopes that we haven't seen for such a long time on the Olympic stage.
21:50It's great to have it just around the corner.
21:52It will be a very, very nice time to be here.
21:55Cortina is just not a downhill or a race.
21:59It's always special to race here, to stay here and to win here.
22:07The next time we'll see Sofia Gocia here in front of her home crowd will be the upcoming 2026 Olympics, where she'll compete for a second gold medal.
22:17The next time we'll see if we can watch a grand proof of the world medal in front of her home.
22:23We'll see you maybe next time.
22:24The next time we'll have an Hawk Road Medal.
22:25The next time we'll see!
22:26The next time we'll see you next time, an Wright Road Medal.
22:27Watch out the next time, you'll see you next time, with a new world medal.
