00:00There's no turning back now.
00:02You hit the bow wave in 14 minutes.
00:04I've got a flash reading.
00:06There have been two bursts in the flux tube already.
00:082.74 and 1.2 million amperes.
00:11With sodium sulphur plumes, scales 7.
00:14I don't like the look of this.
00:16No, it is a bit bloody, isn't it?
00:18The things men do for women, eh?
00:561.2 million amperes.
01:00The magnetic field sentinels are still down.
01:02Well?
01:032.9 million and rising.
01:05You can cope with that.
01:06Message from STC Callisto.
01:09Your position noted.
01:11Bon voyage, Ilya.
01:12I'm also detecting a field of high current plasma.
01:15Composition?
01:16Oxygen, sulphur and protons.
01:18How hard?
01:1915,000 Kelvin.
01:21At its centre.
01:22With luck, we'll pass the outer limits.
01:24Maximum 2,000 Kelvin.
01:25Thank you, Victoria.
01:26With luck, eh?
01:28You seem to be a very lucky woman, Victoria.
01:31Daniel Weatherby calling Compset.
01:33Petra.
01:34I found a captain's code disarming one of the lower deck radioscope sentinels.
01:39Can I get Tim Shaw down here to help me?
01:42No, try and crack it yourself, Mr. Weatherby.
01:44I don't want the whole ship alarmed.
01:47They know I'm here?
01:48I don't think they know very much at the moment.
01:51Petra.
01:52Run the field strength analyser.
01:55Daniel, is this serious?
01:59Well, because the sentinels were down, we didn't get information about one or two things.
02:05There are some big power surges in the plasma field we didn't anticipate.
02:09Yeah, I'd say it's a bit serious.
02:14Routine?
02:15That's all it is.
02:17Yes.
02:18Petra, shipboard announcement.
02:21As you know, we are passing between Jupiter's magneto sheath and the IO flux tube.
02:27There is a severe magnetic storm creating a very high energy density in the plasma.
02:33And this has led to localised current surges of up to 3 million amperes.
02:39There may be some slight turbulence.
02:42And this could, of course, activate the alarms.
02:45You are advised to stay at acceleration stations for your own safety.
02:49This is a purely routine warning.
02:52If you stay awake and patch autosex to channel 17, you will see some interesting plasma flows
02:57as we pass the night-side magneto sheath.
03:00Come on.
03:01Let's get you back to your cabin, Leo.
03:03Put little Henrietta in there to worry about as well.
03:06Come on, Mel, before the lifts are stopped.
03:09Come on.
03:10Well, if I were you, I'd try modelling the plasma as a turbulent liquid.
03:14Right, yes, definitely.
03:20I love you.
03:23I know.
03:29Yeah, I love you too, Daniel.
03:31Oh, my God.
03:32Did you hear that?
03:33Gabby, he said stay at acceleration stations.
03:36The whole point was to keep us at acceleration stations.
03:38Yeah, well, I can't stay still, okay?
03:39If I had to stay still, I would go out of my mind.
03:41I'm in that cabin on my own at the moment, you know?
03:43Gabby, just shut up and strap yourself in, for God's sake.
03:45I don't know what we're going to do with you.
03:47I really don't.
03:49Have you heard the latest about Jim and Anna?
03:51And then to last saw them walking down the corridor in a trance.
03:54Jim and Anna?
03:55Yeah.
03:55What are you talking about?
03:57Oh, just the measles, sir, just the measles.
03:59Stuff, you know, the stuff.
04:00The stuff that Fiona made them drink, the experiment.
04:03Oh, I feel sick.
04:03When we get to pacifier, I'm going to cling to that moon
04:06like nobody ever clung to a moon before.
04:08Fiona.
04:10Fiona!
04:12I'll use lab five, then, shall I?
04:14For your spectrometer readings.
04:16Oh, sorry, are you talking to me?
04:18If you could patch the high-resolution data through.
04:21I'll come with you.
04:22There's no need.
04:23Petra, download reaching spectra to lab five, terminal nine.
04:27I'll need constant update from the polarimeter
04:29and the Zeeman effect magnetometer.
04:31That's what I'll be giving you, Mercedes.
04:33Fine.
04:36Oh, has anyone worn Chazalon?
04:41Yes?
04:42Sorry to disturb you,
04:44but I think Fiona is poisoning my boyfriend.
04:48Nobody poisoned anybody, Sarah.
04:50And you shouldn't go around saying things like that.
04:52Christophe, she made him drink some of the water
04:54from Daniel's experiment.
04:56And now he's not answering his autosec.
04:58I mean, I can't help wondering
04:59if he's lying unconscious or something.
05:01And Anna.
05:02Don't forget Anna.
05:03She might be lying unconscious somewhere as well.
05:05Well, shut it.
05:06Listen to me.
05:06Stay in your cabin.
05:07We're going through the magnetosphere
05:08and the flux tube, okay?
05:09Yes, it's just that I don't want him to die particularly.
05:12Oh, dear God.
05:13I mean, I know I'm being a bad sport,
05:15spoiling Fiona's fun like this.
05:17Sarah, that's a terrible thing to say.
05:18I can't believe it.
05:20But if he is dead, Fiona McBride,
05:23I will never, ever speak to you again.
05:26Sarah, it's a glass of water!
05:37Coffee up.
05:39Melody?
05:39I didn't want to get stuck in the lift, Daniel, okay?
05:42Are you sure?
05:44Hello.
05:45Okay, this is it.
05:48When Elliot disabled the radioscope sentinels,
05:51he also knocked out a cross-latch link
05:53to one of the field centers.
05:54Oh, God, Daniel, what's all for?
05:56Uh-huh.
05:57Petra, get me, cousin.
05:58So why did no job on the systems check?
06:00Because Elliot programmed it not to.
06:02Oh.
06:02Daniel.
06:03Yeah.
06:04I've traced the activity logic block.
06:06If you want to lift it,
06:08the code is on screen now.
06:11Thanks, Daniel.
06:12Yeah, well done, mate.
06:14All right.
06:14Petra, remove lock code AA-4922.
06:18Warning, warning.
06:20Lower deck radioscope shows transient radiation levels above alert level.
06:25Yeah, I can see that.
06:26I've annoyed Elliot.
06:27I like to quiet life, did Elliot.
06:29Field sentinels online.
06:31Field sentinels online.
06:34Amber.
06:34No problem.
06:36High current levels in sentinels.
06:38Models predict peak power surge 3.6 million amps T-minus 10 seconds.
06:44Right, Petra, magnetic shielding to full booster power.
06:47Petra, shipboard comms.
06:48Everybody to stay where they are.
06:51Warning, warning.
06:52You are advised to remain at acceleration stations for your own safety.
06:56What beats me, Fiona,
06:58is the sheer calculated way you managed to become my boyfriend.
07:02You are advised to remain at acceleration stations for your own safety.
07:02Well, it just seemed like a good opportunity.
07:05What, to kill him?
07:06Oh, you're hysterical.
07:08You are advised to remain at acceleration stations for your own safety.
07:12I tell you, when this is over, I'm moving cabins.
07:14Yes, that's right, Sarah.
07:15Oh, God, I'm frightened.
07:17Yeah, well, you've got cause to be, Gabby.
07:19Oh, God, it's no good.
07:21It's no good.
07:22I can't stay.
07:23Hey, come on.
07:24It's OK.
07:25Don't worry.
07:25It's OK.
07:26It's all the time.
07:27Don't worry.
07:28Shh, shh.
07:29Get me Dr. Shadland.
07:30Shh.
07:42Red, red, magnetic field sentinels, red.
07:45Red alert, code zero, zero nine.
07:48Check shield and flash space city.
07:50Petra, priority check of magnetic shielding and gantry form.
07:53Priority comes to space city.
07:55Petra, status report.
07:56Fault causes red alert to main screen.
07:59Field sentinels, amber.
08:00Field sentinels, now amber.
08:04Petra, cancel comms to space city.
08:11All sensors nominal functionality.
08:14Radiation levels and magnetic fields falling.
08:19You may leave acceleration stations.
08:22You may now leave acceleration stations.
08:25I'm so sorry.
08:26That's OK.
08:27There's nothing to be sorry about.
08:30You'll feel better in a minute.
08:32You just try and get some sleep, OK?
08:35OK, Danielle's water experiment.
08:37Now, it's possible that it contained a biologically active trace contaminant that might act as a mood changer.
08:43That's all.
08:44So then why aren't they answering their auto-sex?
08:46Because they're probably listening to Red Spot radio.
08:48At a guess, I'd say the water has reacted with the drugs I gave them to desensitize the skin and
08:53stop the mitching.
08:53At a guess, it's probably sent them into a deep sleep.
08:58You don't think the party's cancelled, do you?
09:00No.
09:01No.
09:01When Mercedes says she'll have a party, Mercedes has a party.
09:05Are you feeling all right, Anna?
09:07I feel great, too.
09:10Oh.
09:11Right, then, I'm off to bed.
09:13You're joking?
09:14Bulldog.
09:15I am shattered.
09:16But what about the party?
09:18What?
09:18Oh, come on.
09:20Oh, look, is there anything that's kept me going these past three hours of stress and unbearable tension?
09:25The thought that Mercedes-Benz was once again a free woman that I could hold in my arms?
09:31Oh, my God.
09:32Petra?
09:33Get me Charles Bremen.
09:36Victoria?
09:38He's just coming.
09:40Commander?
09:41I wonder if you fancied a bit of a drink in the club.
09:44No, not really.
09:46Well, how about taking a couple of hours' watch, then?
09:48Just to, um...
09:50Just to give us a bit of a break, eh?
10:08No, no, no.
10:09It has the capacity to be a very small mood changer, that's all.
10:13Don't you go drinking out of strange bottles in the future, okay?
10:16Dog, you're not by any chance.
10:18Not by any chance.
10:19That I might fall into bed with you on the rebound from Charles Bremen.
10:23Mercedes, you are the passion of my life.
10:25The girl who ran away from Luna, the girl I've been searching for for five years.
10:30I'm going to leave this.
10:31Pacify to Ilya.
10:33Petra?
10:34Good evening, Ilya.
10:36Care to look at something interesting for once?
10:38Shall we enliven your boring existence?
10:40Yes, Pacify.
10:42Enliven our boring existence.
10:44We've aligned the new telescope on something with some extremely interesting features, Ilya.
10:48Am I whetting your appetite?
10:50This is what passes on Pacify for a sense of humour.
10:54Yes, you've whetted our appetites, Pacify.
10:56What have you got for us?
10:58Something Mercedes Page knows about, even if you don't.
11:06You've done some terrible things to me, Fiona McBride.
11:09Oh, I know.
11:10You've treated me very badly for a best friend.
11:13Best friend?
11:14Lied to me, tricked me, made cruel fun of me.
11:17You know, I haven't, but this is the first time you've used my body to experiment on me.
11:23I know.
11:24Was it really a truth, Drog?
11:25Did you confess anything?
11:27Like what?
11:29Like, are you really a virgin, and does Hank really exist?
11:32The answer is yes.
11:35But to which question, Anna?
11:38Okay, everybody, come on, come on.
11:40It's a lecture theatre, a late-night seminar, and you're all in it.
11:44Come on.
11:47I'm going to move Mercedes to Valhalla.
11:50She can leave the Ilya to Pacify and go back to Callisto on the first interorbital.
11:55Well, Drolan can go as well.
11:58What if they don't want to go?
12:01Well, they can't stay here.
12:03Becca's right.
12:03It's disruptive for the students.
12:06Mercedes will still be on Deedalus.
12:08There are 400 people on Deedalus.
12:13So, are you going to get married straight away?
12:16No.
12:18My Mercedes has gone to Valhalla.
12:22Okay, it's a satellite of a star in our own galaxy.
12:24It's a third in order of distance from its own particular sun.
12:28It has a rotation period of 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds.
12:33Subductive zones cause a high level of earthquakes,
12:36which in time result in new mountain ranges forming in the southern hemisphere.
12:40Note the water absorption lines at the satellite's edge,
12:43which reveal at least one major ocean.
12:46Note the blue bands of nitrogen.
12:48Note the ozone layers over the two ice caps.
12:52It's beautiful.
12:53Look at that.
12:55What a waste of resources.
12:57Do you know how much that telescope costs every minute to run?
13:00Charles.
13:02Shut up.
13:03Right, there's Island 1 and Island 2.
13:06And there's the Korean low-orbit city that they've been making so much fuss about.
13:10Yeah.
13:11And there's the Canberra-class shuttle, or in this case it's the Princess Elizabeth,
13:14leaving Mombasa for Earth-Moon, as it was only 14 minutes ago.
13:20Pacify to Ilya via Endymion and Comp-Sat 5.
13:23We lose the picture in seven seconds.
13:25Thank you, Pacify.
13:27It did seem too good a chance to miss.
13:30As soon as you've got the telescope back on Ariel 9, let me know, will you?
13:34And there's something else you can ask your professor.
13:36Don't.
13:38Don't ask who's going to pay for it, please.
13:41Thank you, Pacify.
13:43See you in two weeks' time.
13:47Fire in NIAG 17, Gantry 2.
13:50Fire in NIAG 17, Gantry 2.
13:54Doors seal in ten seconds.
13:56I can't believe, you know, being able to see the Earth as it was, like, 14 minutes ago.
14:03Sometimes I can't wait to go home.
14:06Yeah, me too.
14:07I'm sorry.
14:08I'm going to lecture this.
14:08I'll catch up later.
14:09Come on.
14:10Come on, Julian.
14:11I haven't seen the radio.
14:12Come on, get out of my bag.
14:14Module floods in five seconds.
14:16Anyone in there?
14:16We don't think so.
14:17NIAG 14 now flooding with halon.
14:21Fire extinguished.
14:23Thank God.
14:25So what caused it?
14:27Probably taking the ship through a massive plasma storm.
14:31Petra, isolate source of fire if possible.
14:33Return logic wiring in NIAG 14, lighting control circuits.
14:38Petra, when was the wiring installed?
14:41June 2034.
14:42When the Bonaventure and the NIAG were first joined together.
14:45There's probably a couple of hundred kilometers of wiring that goes back that far.
14:48But it isn't all going to ignite.
14:50But it isn't all going to ignite.
14:52Okay.
14:54Let's talk this one through.
14:56We all know what happened and why.
15:00It's the story of every disaster that ever there was.
15:04A captain who disabled a minor, an unimportant alarm because it wasn't working properly and kept waking him up.
15:12Another officer, in a hurry to rendezvous, takes a ship through a storm he could have avoided and finds out,
15:19too late, that his magnetic field sentinels aren't working.
15:24A fire.
15:26The worst thing that can happen on a spaceship, the nightmare.
15:31Okay.
15:33It's out.
15:34But there is going to be a full inquest into what happened here tonight.
15:37From the decision to pass between the flux tube and the magneto sheath,
15:41to the decision to go dancing by the acting captain and navigator.
15:46I wondered when we were going to get...
15:48Is the ship secure?
15:48As far as anyone can tell...
15:50Then I am going to my room.
15:53Victoria.
16:02You have to be impressed.
16:04One second after the all clear, he's looking for someone to chop.
16:08It's a politician, you see.
16:09A true politician.
16:11He's going to destroy you, Bulldog.
16:13Oh, I don't think so.
16:15And all because of me.
16:17You keep forgetting something.
16:18He doesn't want you any more.
16:20He's got Victoria.
16:22Don't have much imagination, do you?
16:25Oh, but she's not coming back tonight.
16:28So?
16:30It's an afternoon.
16:35Come to my cabin.
16:37Why not?
16:38When Mercedes has gone.
16:41And when her clothes have gone.
16:46Bonaventure 91.
16:48Fire doors close in ten seconds.
16:50Oxygen masks, where are they?
16:52Fire drill code 9 now in operation on this gantry.
16:58It means it's a real fire, but we've not got to stay where we are.
17:01You don't worry, we'll be all right.
17:03You just flood wherever it is.
17:04Hang on.
17:08Hello?
17:09Take Melody to entry port one, and come to the bridge.
17:15Okay, come on.
17:16Come on.
17:17And you too, Sarah.
17:18What about Fiona?
17:19There's no time to worry about Fiona.
17:21Can I have everybody's attention?
17:23Can I have everyone's attention, please?
17:27Now, there's a fire on the ship, but it's not in gantry four, so there's no danger.
17:32I repeat, it's not on gantry four.
17:34Okay, firefighters go to your stations.
17:36Everybody else, go back to your cabins or into the common room until we get the old clear from Comstead,
17:41okay?
17:41It was due for replacement of the next refit.
17:44Look, we now have fires on two gantries.
17:47I want to know how much pre-merged ancient wiring there is on gantry four and gantry one.
17:53It's everywhere.
17:54It's all over the ship.
17:56Broadband volumeter gantry four shows rapid heat energy increase.
18:01Infrared scanner alarm.
18:03Condition red.
18:04Condition red.
18:05Gantry four, it's packed with students.
18:08General evacuation.
18:09Uh-huh.
18:10Go and get the shuttles on standby.
18:11Me, I'm not a pilot.
18:12It would take me hours.
18:13All right, evacuate gantry four and keep trying to raise Charles.
18:16I'll be ready for pre-release checks in five minutes.
18:19We'll have to take one shuttle each.
18:25I'll, um, I'll come and collect you in a bit then.
18:30Take care.
18:31Yeah, you know me.
18:32Evacuation of gantry four now and away.
18:35Oh, God.
18:49When you get to the center hub, go immediately to your fire stations and wait for the all-clear.
18:53Okay.
18:54And don't worry.
18:55We've got more firefighting ability on this ship than they've got in any major city.
18:59Anna, Anna, quick.
19:00Come on.
19:01Warning.
19:02Okay.
19:02Warning.
19:02Hail on flooding, gantry four.
19:15Callisto control to Ilya.
19:17Rescue coordination through commsats three and nine.
19:21SS Endymion is in emergency burn.
19:24ETA, T-minus four hours, 20 minutes.
19:27Yeah, thank you, Callisto.
19:29We'll continue transmitting our position on all emergency frequencies.
19:34Where's Drummond?
19:36Bearing the shuttle.
19:38I'm supposed to take the center on Charles the Minos.
19:41Who else can pilot the Minos?
19:44Only Drummond.
19:48It's you and him, then.
19:52Go on, then.
