00:01We don't know if there's brain damage on the other side.
00:03If there is, we may have to operate on that side as well,
00:06and I don't know if she can handle it.
00:09Is she in danger?
00:12She's stabilized for the moment,
00:14but if there's further bleeding, the situation will be critical.
00:30The End
00:54I'm sorry to disturb you.
00:55I wasn't asleep.
00:58I've brought this.
00:59What is it?
01:01A letter of resignation. I thought you should be first to read it.
01:04I haven't answered this.
01:05I've set out my reasons in the signal.
01:09It's out of the question.
01:10The German can command the ship.
01:11It's not what he's here for.
01:13In the circumstances, I don't see what else I can do.
01:15You can get back to your post. That's what you can do.
01:18What happened yesterday was my fault.
01:20No.
01:21Well, you certainly thought so at the time.
01:22I hit out at people without thinking.
01:25It's one of my many faults and a particularly unpleasant one.
01:28I apologize.
01:28It was a command to fire downloaded into the computer.
01:32I should have seen it.
01:33A bit more.
01:34If we follow the chain of events back far enough,
01:37we can probably blame it all on Newton.
01:39But it won't change anything.
01:43I feel that my authority's been undermined
01:45and my competence brought into question.
01:48Go back to the bridge, Mr. Lewis,
01:49and prepare for our descent into Jupiter.
01:53And stop torturing yourself.
01:56There's a good fellow.
01:59I told you I was looking for Sarah's notes.
02:02Notes on what?
02:03Come on, Anna. Notes on what?
02:05None of your business.
02:06If you're planning to make a career as a thief,
02:08you better learn to think on your feet, Anna.
02:09My conscience is clear.
02:11Oh, I wish my conscience let me rummage
02:13through other people's private papers.
02:16You haven't got any ideas, have you?
02:18Yes, I have.
02:18You haven't got a clue, have you?
02:20Yes, I have.
02:21Not a clue.
02:23I don't know why you stood for the post
02:24if you didn't know what to do with it.
02:25I stood because I was asked to by lots of people.
02:28Now, I'm warning you.
02:29If there's one word in your program about bickers and tarts...
02:32You won't find that in my program
02:34and you won't find strip monopoly either.
02:36Oh, so you did see something.
02:37Certain words lived out.
02:39That was on page four, Anna.
02:42Well, you've set the tone for this campaign.
02:43It's gloves off from now on.
02:45And not just gloves, it seems.
02:49I'll be going through your program with a fine tooth comb.
02:52And if I think you've pinched anything, I'll kill you.
03:00You've considered the possibility of brain damage?
03:02You know I have.
03:03I'm sorry.
03:04You won't know the answer until she recovers consciousness.
03:07If she recovers consciousness.
03:10Then as you say...
03:13She wouldn't want to live that way.
03:14She wouldn't know.
03:15And she wouldn't approve of measures that would prolong such a life.
03:19If she's capable of saying that, there isn't a problem.
03:22I'm saying it for her now.
03:23You can't.
03:24I'm afraid not.
03:24I'm afraid not.
03:25I'm afraid not.
03:27Look, I know how you feel.
03:28I doubt that.
03:29I doubt that very much.
03:31You're just going to have to trust me.
03:33I'm trusting you to do what's right.
03:35Go away, Charles.
03:36Just go away to the bridge or wherever you want to go.
03:39I'll contact you the moment I know the operation has succeeded all.
03:56She dies.
03:58She won't die.
04:00Nothing's worse than death.
04:04Why are you putting yourself through this?
04:06In a few hours we'll have the answer.
04:09Don't worry.
04:10Are you not cracking up?
04:12Oh, I never thought you would.
04:13One's bad enough.
04:15What do you mean Thimbo?
04:16He offered me his resignation.
04:18Holds himself to blame.
04:19Yes, well, he'll learn.
04:21I've got my doubts about Lewis.
04:23I won't deny that.
04:23But none of this is down to him.
04:25Do you want me to get a grip of him?
04:27Yeah, if you can.
04:28I tried to put his mind at rest.
04:29Not sure how effective it was.
04:31Yeah, I'll sort him out.
04:32Drummond.
04:33Yeah?
04:34Handle with Carey.
04:50I tried to make him understand.
04:52He wouldn't listen.
04:54Paul's dead.
04:55Mercedes is alive.
04:57That's all he cares about.
04:58Yes, and I am to blame.
04:59Insofar as you are in command.
05:01I should have checked that computer.
05:03I should have known that there was an order to fire downloaded.
05:05For God's sake, we could have done the descent without the side thruster.
05:08Maybe.
05:09And if you're 20 years more experienced, you would.
05:11Maybe you're to blame there as well.
05:13If only you got your captain bars at the age of six, none of this would have happened.
05:17I was in command.
05:18I am to blame.
05:19I don't think so, and neither does Brelin.
05:22But it's possible.
05:24So accept the possibility, then get on with your job.
05:27How?
05:28How can I do that?
05:29Because you're here, and there's no one else.
05:32As you?
05:32Oh, not me, mate.
05:33I'm air-frames.
05:34You could fly this ship single-handed.
05:35I'm here on research.
05:37You're in command.
05:38You wanted it.
05:39You got it.
05:40You do it.
05:43I don't think I can.
05:44You can tie yourself in knots over this, and no one can stop you.
05:47But it won't bring Lockwood back.
05:48No, no, I know.
05:49All you'll do is endanger the rest of us.
05:51You don't understand.
05:52Nobody seems to understand.
05:53But if you want to have a nervous breakdown, do it in your own time.
05:56Preferably on leave.
05:57In the meantime, get us to the Achilles.
06:03How do you feel?
06:05Fine.
06:05You don't feel any different?
06:07Um, no, not really.
06:09This is going to sound a bit daft, but I do.
06:14Why do you feel different, Daniel?
06:15Well, men do.
06:16It's a well-known fact.
06:17Oh, really?
06:19Have you been sick yet?
06:20Do you know what I mean?
06:22No, I don't.
06:23Well, like, the way I thought I'd feel if this thing ever happened to me,
06:25I don't feel that way at all.
06:27And how do you feel?
06:29Well, elated.
06:30Elated?
06:31Yeah.
06:31Once the shocker borne off.
06:33Oh, Daniel.
06:35I told you it was going to sound daft.
06:37You know, I think you'd make me laugh, even if I was dying.
06:41Like this morning, right?
06:43Anna was banging on to me as usual about something or other at breakfast.
06:46Now, normally I would have said something really sarcastic to her.
06:49Surely not.
06:49But somehow I couldn't find it in my heart.
06:51I was really nice to her.
06:52Well, maybe this will last for the rest of your days.
06:54Yeah.
06:56You know, I think this might be the best thing that's ever happened to us.
07:00It's not happening to us, Daniel.
07:02It's happening to me.
07:06Would you believe that woman is still denying it?
07:09Oh, sorry.
07:12Now then, Captain Lewis.
07:15All set?
07:15Of course he is.
07:16Aren't you?
07:17What's our position?
07:18It's on the...
07:18It's on the stream.
07:22We've begun our descent into the inner Jupiter system.
07:26Outside pressure is one zero millibars to the minus nine.
07:30The temperature is one six zero degrees Kelvin, radiation density climbing rapidly.
07:36Good.
07:38A five second burn at one eight, one five hours, three eight seconds to get the right orbital inclination.
07:46And the maximum slingshot velocity will be four three zero zero zero kilometers per hour.
07:57What course?
07:58Golf.
07:59Golf.
08:00Hotel.
08:02Six, seven, two, nine.
08:05Don't you wait or so?
08:06Oh.
08:15Right.
08:17That's it.
08:20Nothing to do now but wait.
08:24I'm gonna stand by you, Melody.
08:26There's no need.
08:27I don't need to do the decent thing.
08:29When did I ever do that?
08:30You're not so bad.
08:33Anyway, I wouldn't be doing the decent thing.
08:36I'd be doing what I wanted to do.
08:39What?
08:39Marriage, Daniel?
08:41I'm serious, Melody.
08:43I love you.
08:46Yes, darling.
08:47Why do you think I chased after you for so long, made a complete fool of myself?
08:50Well, you got what you wanted.
08:51That's the first time I've ever said it to you, the first time I've ever meant it.
09:02What now?
09:05You sit there and pretend to work.
09:07I go away and pretend to sleep.
09:09You ought to take something.
09:10Ah, not while she's like this.
09:12At least try and get a couple of hours.
09:13I can't rest until she opens her eyes and speaks to us.
09:17It will happen, won't it?
09:20I've done everything I know how to do.
09:24This was supposed to be a quiet posting.
09:27They sent me here to finish my thesis.
09:32Yes?
09:33Can you come to Comstate?
09:35Yeah, what's wrong?
09:37It's Fimbo.
09:38Okay.
09:42Do you think she had me?
09:44If only you were declaring undying love.
09:47I swear she'd believe me.
09:48I do, Daniel, really.
09:51It doesn't make any difference.
09:57It's still him, isn't it?
10:01What then?
10:03I don't know.
10:05Maybe my life's over.
10:07Oh, God.
10:08If you're going to talk drivel, I am going.
10:10Don't go.
10:17You know, this must be killing Victoria.
10:20Go.
10:20Let me tell her it's not Jean's baby.
10:22No.
10:23Just her.
10:24No.
10:24Put her out of her misery.
10:25I'll swear to secrecy.
10:26It won't work.
10:26It never does.
10:28Oh, God.
10:29I wish I hadn't told you now.
10:31I don't understand why it has to be such a big secret.
10:34I've got my reasons, Daniel, all right?
10:36I've got my reasons.
10:37It's my business.
10:39And maybe it's your business as well, but it's nobody else's.
10:42I never said it was Jean's baby.
10:44I never said anything about it being his baby.
10:48It's radiation sickness.
10:49Oh, God.
10:50So you're going to have to get shielded, Finbo.
10:52That'll mean the airlock again.
10:54I'm afraid so.
10:55We can't expect the level to decrease for at least 12 hours.
10:59Off you go, Finbo.
11:00I'll come down with you.
11:02No, no, no.
11:03There's no need for that.
11:07You'll have to command now.
11:09Only till we get clear of the Van Allens.
11:11My job to survey the Achilles once you've got us there.
11:14I won't get you there.
11:16Will that man ever be fit to command?
11:18No, he'll be all right once we're out of the system.
11:20I mean mentally.
11:22His mental state is a result of his physical state.
11:24You mean he's feeling bad because he's feeling bad?
11:27Something like that.
11:28Well, I hope you're right.
11:30Can you manage in the meantime?
11:32Let's get on with it.
11:34Medicom to come, then.
11:36Petra?
11:37She's moving her fingers.
11:38That means she's regaining consciousness.
11:40I'm on my way.
11:46Sadie's.
11:51Right.
11:54That's poor.
12:11What's it, David?
12:13What I resented was the implication that I don't know how to have fun.
12:16That's politics.
12:17People say the craziest things.
12:19I mean, when you and Gabby first came aboard, who was it that showed you how to have a good
12:23time?
12:23It was you, I know.
12:24And we did have fun, didn't we?
12:27It was me.
12:27Walks in the dome.
12:28Going to see Henker.
12:29Actually, we never got to see Henker.
12:31Oh, we really must, you know.
12:33Yes.
12:34When I go to see Henker, we just laugh and laugh.
12:37That's why it hurts every time she says I'm boring.
12:40Me.
12:41And then she accuses me of cheating.
12:43Were you?
12:44How can you say such a thing?
12:46Anna, it's only a student election.
12:47And if Fiona wins, the social life at this college will revolve around root games and cheap alcohol.
12:52It's a powerful combination.
12:54That's when we're not staging sit-ins or walk-outs.
12:57She is a bit fiery, isn't she?
12:59She's a troublemaker and a tart.
13:01Right.
13:02Now, I'm pretty sure Daniel can deliver the secondaries.
13:05So, I'm looking for you to bring in the first.
13:11What happened?
13:14Burner fired.
13:15You were caught in the blast.
13:17Did Paul bring me in?
13:19That's right.
13:21Where is he?
13:22Hey, don't try to move.
13:23Rusty, up in his room.
13:25There was only space for one in here and no need was the greater.
13:28Oh.
13:31Very tired.
13:32Yeah, you get some rest now.
13:35I'm not going out again.
13:38No way.
13:41Oh, hi, Philippe.
13:42Anna.
13:43I was wondering if you could help me with my project.
13:45Do you mind?
13:48I always say you've got to be a man to understand.
13:50Push off, Anna.
13:51Oh, hello, Fiona.
13:52Look, I thought you'd finished that project.
13:55Actually, yes.
13:55It's just that it needs licking into sheep.
13:58The thing is, I'm busy.
13:59For the next 50 years.
14:00I've got a lot of work on my own, Anna.
14:02Well, bring it over.
14:03We can work together.
14:04I'm not sure that's such a good idea.
14:06No, it isn't.
14:07Tim and I used to try that, but we always ended up talking all the time.
14:10Sorry.
14:12It's all right.
14:12I understand.
14:14Well, maybe just for an hour.
14:17After dinner?
14:18Fine.
14:21I'd better get on then.
14:26He's not your sortie now.
14:28I'll be the judge of that, thank you.
14:30You have nothing in common.
14:31He's serious-minded and studious.
14:33That's something I like about him.
14:34He also happens to be one of my supporters.
14:37That's something else I like.
14:38He's kind to lame ducks.
14:41Oi.
14:42What is it about you French guys?
14:44What do you mean?
14:45You're always getting these girls fighting over you.
14:47I haven't done anything.
14:48My friend, Jean-Francois, is exactly the same.
14:52I hope you're not going to end up like him.
14:55Attention, news from Medicom.
14:57Mercedes' page has recovered consciousness.
14:59She's talked with us for a while and is now resting.
15:02All the indications are that the operation has been a complete success.
15:06Yay!
15:10What did she say when she first came round?
15:13She asked about Paul.
15:15What else?
15:16Nothing.
15:18Nothing at all?
15:19I think she said your name.
15:22You think?
15:24She did.
15:25She did, definitely.
15:26Charles, she said.
15:27She was very weak.
15:31I think I've got it easy compared to some people on this ship.
15:34Well.
15:36So, have you decided what you want to do?
15:39No.
15:40Perhaps if you talk to Jean-Francois again.
15:44It's really got nothing to do with Jean-Francois.
15:47He does have some rights in this, Melody.
15:48He is a father.
15:51No, he isn't.
15:53I'm sorry.
15:54You heard.
15:56Melody!
15:58Look.
15:59I'm telling you this as you're patient in confidence.
16:02Yeah, yeah, but listen, if it's not Jean-Francois, then who?
16:05Perhaps that can be my big secret.
16:10All right.
16:11Actually, it's Daniel's.
16:13Are you sure?
16:15I beg your pardon?
16:17Oh, la, la.
16:19Look, are you implying that there's dozens of boys it might have been?
16:22No, no, no, no, no.
16:23It's just that everyone thinks it's Jean-Francois's baby.
16:25I never said that.
16:28Does Daniel know?
16:30Oh, yeah.
16:31And?
16:32And what?
16:34What does he feel about it?
16:36He says he loves me.
16:38He wants to get married.
16:39You know, he's really quite old-fashioned.
16:40That's not what you want.
16:42I don't think so.
16:44But whatever I do, I want it to be my decision.
16:47I don't want to be railroaded into anything.
16:48Oh, I see.
16:49Right now, everyone thinks it's Jean-Francois.
16:51Well, everyone knows we've finished and he's millions of kilometers away.
16:55That leaves me to deal with this by myself.
16:58Doesn't affect anyone else.
17:00Except Victoria.
17:01Melody, at the very least, you've got to tell Victoria.
17:06Yeah, all right.
17:07That's my Melody.
17:09What do you want, Anna?
17:11I want to sign you up for a series of lectures.
17:14What could I possibly have to say that would interest anyone?
17:18Pirates?
17:18I don't know whether you noticed, but last time most people ran a mile.
17:23I thought they were fascinating.
17:25Has the Breland tried to have me committed?
17:27Bluebeard.
17:28Bluebeard was an amazing guy.
17:31Blackbeard.
17:32You could bring along your toy boats if you want.
17:35Model boats, Anna.
17:39Anna.
17:41Tell me something.
17:44Why is it that whatever I do crumbles away to dust?
17:48Is this a riddle?
17:49I used to dream of commanding this ship.
17:51And now you are?
17:53No.
17:54It says Captain Lewis on your door.
17:5748 hours.
17:5848 hours, that's all I've had.
18:00And what have I achieved?
18:03Paul dead?
18:04Mercedes on the operating table?
18:07And me banged up in here.
18:10Still, tomorrow's another day, Thimble.
18:14Paul had only been with us a short time, when he...
18:18When he...
18:20Cancel.
18:23In the short time your son was with us on the Iliath.
18:27All of us came to love him.
18:30For his warmth.
18:34Generous...
18:35Of failing.
18:44Being a medic on the morning, couldn't be disappointed.
18:46Your staff doesn't seem to think so.
18:48Look, we've been through all this.
18:50I'm really very tired.
18:53You'll sleep better when you've heard what I've got to say.
18:56I wish that were true.
19:01Look, this is in the strictest confidence, okay?
19:03No-one else must know.
19:05Yes, anything.
19:08Tell me.
19:10It's about Jean-Francois.
19:13He's not the father of...
19:16Um...
19:17Well, he's not the father.
19:20Daniel is.
19:23Daniel?
19:26You expect me to believe that?
19:28Why not? It's true.
19:31Daniel!
19:32Look, it wasn't easy deciding whether to tell you this.
19:37But how do you know?
19:40Victoria.
19:41You ought to know that Jean-Francois was faithful until the day we spit up.
19:46Faithful to you, that is.
19:49Believe me, it's not him.
19:50It couldn't possibly be him.
19:51Arithmetic, Victoria.
19:53Yeah, but...
19:54Daniel!
19:56I mean, after all that you've said about him...
20:00Well, cheer up.
20:02You're off the hook.
20:03You and Jean-Francois can go and get married.
20:07That's what you wanted, isn't it?
20:18You know they've postponed the election till after the funeral.
20:21Good.
20:28I've just been with Rebecca.
20:30Really?
20:31I've never seen Rebecca cry before.
20:34For a moment, I really thought Fimble was going to.
20:37He's blaming himself for the whole thing.
20:46How's your program coming along?
20:48It's all over the place.
20:50You can have a look at mine if you want.
20:51I already have.
20:55You know, I'm still gonna fight for this job.
20:57Yeah, me too.
20:58And I'm gonna win.
20:59We'll see.
21:00But it's not worth falling out over, is it?
21:02No.
21:03Life's too short.
21:06In essence, it's very simple.
21:08We drop into Jupiter, burn our engines for five seconds,
21:11then Jupiter's gravitational field boots us clean out of the system.
21:15Like a bat out of Hell, eh?
21:16Well, only faster and Hell's cooler.
21:19You've been up here before?
21:20Yeah, I've done a couple of watches, fired a railgun, you know.
21:24Professor Breland says you're a good man.
21:26Oh, does he?
21:27Well, he's not been himself lately.
21:30Nervous?
21:31Yes.
21:32Good.
21:34Well, sit down, then.
21:36Right.
21:37Now, all you have to do is watch that screen.
21:40Read the checklist off it when it comes up, and...
21:43man the intercom.
21:44And don't do anything unless I say so.
21:46Got that?
21:47Got it.
21:49Basically, this is a doddle.
21:50Flimbo did all the sums before he flaked out.
21:53Don't worry, I'll have to check them.
21:56Okay.
21:57Let's go.
22:00Coolant circuit's open.
22:03Check.
22:04Generators to preload.

22:29This is the acting first officer speaking.
22:32Ignition will be in one minute.
22:35All personnel to acceleration stations, please.
22:38I repeat, all personnel to acceleration stations.
22:42I've always said that for Daedalus I'd commit any crime,
22:45except any sacrifice.
22:49Well, now I know better.
22:51Save you, I'd have turned his ship around, headed back to Callisto,
22:54Island Five, anywhere.
22:57I used to say Daedalus was my life.
23:01But what would life be without you, eh?
23:05Listen.
23:17Ignition sequence running, T-minus ten.
23:21Course, Gulf Hotel 6729.
23:26Ignition sequence starts.
23:28We have ignition.
23:30All engines lit and are at nominal thrust.
23:34Confirmed.
23:35Go to full burn.
23:39Cut engines, maintain course.
23:42Initiate systems check.
23:45Engines off.
23:46Systems check routine's now running.
23:49Well, me old mucker.
