00:01So it's true.
00:02It's what everybody was saying.
00:04A library assistant.
00:06She's a redhead from Iowa.
00:08The only girl from Iowa who ever had to go
00:10450 million kilometers to meet
00:12a sex-graced Frenchman.
00:15Are you going to tell Victoria?
00:16Why are you so worried? I thought you hated her.
00:20Look,
00:20when I found out about Norfolk's war and Victoria,
00:23yeah, I wanted to kill her.
00:24Now I think she did me a favor.
00:26Maybe I'd be doing her a favor
00:28if I told her about the redhead.
00:30Look, you can't go around
00:31ruining people's lives just for a joke.
00:35I think Jean-François loves Victoria.
00:37And I think he's going to come back to her.
00:38And I don't want her to be upset anymore, okay?
00:40I'm fed up with all these squabbles and jealousies.
00:42That's attaching.
00:45Look, will you just promise me?
00:47Sorry, but Professor Breland said five minutes only.
00:50That's okay.
00:51I'm ready to go back to my cell.
00:54Promise.
01:02I'm ready to go back to my cell.
01:03I'm ready to go back to my cell.
01:11I'm ready to go back to my cell.
01:17I'm ready to go back to my cell.
01:18I'm ready to go back to my cell.
01:19I'm ready to go back to my cell.
01:19I'm ready to go back to my cell.
01:19I'm ready to go back to my cell.
01:20I'm ready to go back to my cell.
01:22I'm ready to go back to my cell.
01:23I'm ready to go back to my cell.
01:29Iliad to shuttle. We have go for separation.
01:33After separation, your comms frequency will be 5.209.
01:39Hatch is to automatic.
01:42Confirmed.
01:43Shuttle to internal systems.
01:45All the systems go for release.
01:49Mr. Weatherby, you have control?
01:52I have control.
01:54Release latch is unlocked. Release in ten seconds.
01:57Nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
02:08Shuttle release okay. Push back underway.
02:12I wish I'd invite me to lunch down on Amalia.
02:16Conflict confirmed.
02:17Have you ever been there?
02:18Amalia control to Iliad. Confirm shuttle departure and go for descent.
02:23Roger. Shuttle ready for descent.
02:27That's a funny little moon. Not much to it.
02:31Go on then.
02:33Um, Iliad to Amalia control.
02:36Shuttle has completed pre-descent burn and is transferring control to Himalaya.
02:40Himalaya has control.
02:43Iliad to shuttle. Have a nice trip. Enjoy your lunch.
02:47See? What did I tell you?
02:50Pizza cake.
02:57What's that?
02:58Honey and almond cake.
02:59Yeah?
03:00It's Turkish wheat firing.
03:02So where's the Turkish museling, the Turkish brand?
03:04Hey, Melody, you are coming to my relaxation class, aren't you?
03:07Yeah.
03:07Hey, I'll come. I'm really stressed out.
03:10You're not pregnant.
03:12Is that my fault?
03:13Classes are for anyone who wants them.
03:14I've got to get my presentation today.
03:17Maybe I ought to mellow out and get my energy flowing along positive meridians.
03:20There's no way you're not going to need a degree this time, Byron.
03:23I'll fire it out in the big, cold universe.
03:29What time's the class anyway, Byron?
03:30Dorm at 11.
03:31Okay, Melody?
03:32My presentation's at 10.
03:34Yeah, I've got to go.
03:35Yeah, we're all looking forward to it.
03:37Professor Brendan, do you have any patch through to his office?
03:39Yeah?
03:41That woman already loosened up.
03:43She's too stressed out.
03:44Hey, Victoria, you ever heard of Alexander classes?
03:47No one's told her, I don't suppose.
03:49Told her what?
03:50Jean-Francois.
03:51Jean-Francois?
03:52The rat.
03:54Are you telling me that he's seen...
03:55Yeah.
03:55He's not?
03:56He is.
03:56Not again.
03:58A mere rumour invented by a malicious girl in Sprid.
04:02A stupid one.
04:11Petra, get me Melody, sure.
04:15Melody, guess what?
04:17I've just guided the shuttle separation between here and Himalaya.
04:20Oh, how clever.
04:22I'm all on my own in Clemson now.
04:24What's it coming up?
04:27If that's the only thing you've got to worry about, I know you'll be all right.
04:30Have you heard from Jean-Francois?
04:32No, not that.
04:33I just wondered if you had.
04:36No, I think he's...
04:36He's just saving up for my birthday.
04:38Yeah, of course he is.
04:39He's saving up for a birthday call.
04:41Yeah, I expect that to.
04:43Don't worry about Jean-Francois.
04:46Anna.
04:47I wasn't going to say anything.
04:48I wasn't going to say a word.
04:49God knows why Gabby had to tell you.
04:51Can't you just keep your trap shut for once?
04:53I mean, just once.
04:54Well, tell me to shut up.
04:55I don't actually like aubergines, do you?
04:57Hey, you'll love these.
04:59Imam Bialdi.
05:00It means the imam swoon.
05:02Who's the imam?
05:04Okay, we're ready.
05:04The imam's about to cook the dinner for.
05:06And he was so overwhelmed by it that he fainted.
05:08Like a religious experience.
05:09We're getting ready to roll.
05:10Can I have some quiet, please?
05:12I'll take questions afterwards, okay?
05:14He fainted just because he liked his dinner.
05:17Well, you know sometimes how something is so beautiful
05:20your soul just wants to leave your body.
05:22I'll just get started.
05:24Petro, roll.
05:29Hey, happy elements, eh?
05:31Wow.
05:32Just shut it, will you?
05:37Permission to come on the bridge, sir?
05:39Mass comms causing orbital altitude drift.
05:43Correction burns from side thrusters gamma-4
05:46and delta-6
05:47are to be auto-implemented.
05:50Thrusters engaging.
05:52Course track shows nominal.
05:54Burn times 2.4
05:56and 0.9 seconds
05:58for gamma-4 and delta-6, respectively.
06:02You think okay?
06:04I don't know.
06:06It's true.
06:07He's at it again.
06:07Engaged to half the girls on island 5.
06:09Funny how he always wants to marry them.
06:11No, no, no, no.
06:11He always wants to get engaged to them.
06:13No, but what about Victoria?
06:15Yeah, well, who's always the last one to find out?
06:18Oh, Lord.
06:19Actually, I find all these student amours
06:20and broken hearts rather tedious, haven't they?
06:23You are hard to say.
06:25Yeah, you are hard to say.
06:25So?
06:26No, no, no.
06:27It's always that Victoria's weeping around
06:28in some nervous decline of something.
06:31Isn't she?
06:32Well, Mary.
06:32Look, look, sorry to bother you,
06:34but Petra's decelerating
06:35at 0.15 metres per second in X
06:38and 0.05 metres per second in Z.
06:41I haven't touched anything,
06:42but the side thrusters just went off.
06:43No, she's on autopilot.
06:45She has instructions to follow this orbit precisely.
06:48Nicole concentrates Daniel Sweetie,
06:49also known as mass cons.
06:51They cause variations in the gravitational field,
06:53and so auto-orbiters we pass over them.
06:55And Petra compensates automatically.
06:57Look, do you want me to come down?
06:58No, no, no, I knew it was that.
07:01I just thought it best to check.
07:02Yeah, okay.
07:03Give me a call if you're not happy about anything else.
07:06Cheers, thanks.
07:08See, I told you there was nothing to worry about.
07:10I'm so proud of you.
07:12Oh, no, get off.
07:13No, no, go.
07:14I want you to sit up straight.
07:15Take your hands away,
07:15and I want you to look rugged.
07:17What for?
07:17Petra, please take a portrait photograph
07:19of cadet officer Weatherby.
07:21Oh, no, please.
07:22Oh, come on.
07:22Incline head 0.3 degrees to starboard.
07:25Which way is starboard?
07:26In T minus five seconds, say G.
07:29Melody, Melody, no, we won't go first.
07:31I'm going to shh.
07:33And again, please.
07:34Oh, no, no, another one, please.
07:35Oh, come on.
07:3620,000 million years.
07:39That's how long we've been sitting here.
07:40The universe has been expanding for 20,000 million years.
07:44Nearly as long as you've been up your lungs, Byron.
07:45There are those stars that live out their allotted time
07:48and die quietly.
07:49And then there are those that flare into supernova explosions
07:55before being expelled, ejected, rejected, and reduced.
08:02What does it all mean?
08:05Can we ever hope to explain it?
08:07No.
08:08We are wanderers, explorers, always seeking new experiences, far horizons.
08:16Do you think he's trying to get this paper rejected?
08:17Indeed, as Wittgenstein said,
08:20if the lion could speak,
08:22we would not understand him.
08:25What?
08:26Is that deep or is that deep?
08:28Oh, Byron.
08:28Petra, stop.
08:29Will you not just calm down?
08:31This is serious.
08:33Byron, you will get your degree,
08:35whatever trouble you come up with.
08:41Do you think you've got upgraded security status?
08:44Yeah, I just think so.
08:46I may be just a cadet, but I'm an officer cadet.
08:50We could read some files.
08:52That'd be silly.
08:54Only the interesting ones.
08:56Professor Brelins.
08:57Melody, officers do not read other people's files.
09:01Natasha's in both.
09:02What for?
09:04Daniel, you're becoming very honourable
09:06since you've got that uniform.
09:08Activation of thrusters alpha-12 and beta-2 emanate.
09:12Daniel?
09:13Don't worry.
09:15Just Petra compensating for the orbital changes
09:17if you have to do.
09:19I'm so confident, I don't know how you do it.
09:21Dr. Chazalon calling Comsen.
09:25Petra?
09:26Melody, I thought I'd find you in there.
09:29Do you want to come to the dome now, please?
09:32I want you to imagine
09:33that you're on your own private tropical island
09:36far away from the Jupiter system.
09:39You're bathing in warm, luxurious water.
09:43The sun caressing your body.
09:48And as you listen to the tropical birds serenading you,
09:52you take a deep breath of fresh, fragrant air.
09:58Deep into your lungs.
10:02And then you breathe out all the stress and tension
10:06from within your body.
10:08Gabby, you have a problem?
10:10Well, I keep thinking.
10:12Shh, shh, shh.
10:13Did I leave my altar sec?
10:15In the problem of a lecture that I'm having?
10:17Let it go.
10:17Let go of all the trivial day-to-day problems.
10:20Just relax.
10:22Feel your head relaxing.
10:24Your eyes, your mouth, your cheek, your neck, your shoulders.
10:33All the stress and tension floating away.
10:38Increased velocity 18.7%.
10:411.34 kilometers per second.
10:46Petra, why increased velocity?
10:491.59058 kilometers per second.
10:54Petra, is this a routine course adjustment?
10:57No.
10:58This is an automatic computer response
11:01to the ILEA suffering non-standard gravitational variations in orbit.
11:05Right.
11:06Petra, cancel acceleration and maintain velocity.
11:11Autopilot acceleration.
11:14We have go for acceleration or override authority
11:17to standing orders must be given.
11:19Petra, stop.
11:20Please confirm cancellation with Captain's code.
11:24Increasing velocity T-minus 1 minute 30 seconds.
11:28Okay, get me Commander Drummond.
11:31Shipboard announcement.
11:32All personnel to acceleration stations.
11:34All personnel to emergency acceleration stations.
11:37Oh, what's going on?
11:38Okay.
11:39Emergency acceleration stations.
11:40Come on, no time to get better, Captain Paul.
11:42Byron, Meryl, come on.
11:44Okay.
11:45Come on.
11:46Come on.
11:47Come on.
11:47Come on, ma'am.
11:49Head's down.
11:51T-minus 1 minute 20 seconds.
11:58T-minus 1 minute.
12:01What is it?
12:02Ah, um, now, now, now, Petra says we're accelerating and it's a non-standard manoeuvre either.
12:07Daniel, that doesn't make sense.
12:08I know, I can't help that, can I?
12:10It's happening.
12:11T-minus 45 seconds.
12:14All personnel to emergency acceleration stations immediately.
12:19No, no, no, it's helping me out.
12:21Oh, God, you don't worry.
12:23Why don't they tell us something?
12:24Oh, God, who is driving the ship?
12:29Three, two, one.
12:35Velocity changing now.
12:38What the hell's going on?
12:41Velocity adjustment completed.
12:47It's, um...
12:49Is that it?
12:53Sorry.
13:08I am really, really, really sorry.
13:11Don't worry about it.
13:12As long as you understand the principle, you won't do it again, will you?
13:14Look, let me go over this again, exactly as I did before you took the watch.
13:20I'm sorry, really.
13:21You see, we're in an orbit off Himalaya designed to keep us in exact comms with the astrophysics base.
13:27On autopilot, Petra does it all.
13:30Now, because of high nickel concentrates in certain areas, the gravity field varies.
13:35Petra accelerates and decelerates using the side thrusters to compensate.
13:39Yeah, all right, but Petra went into a different mode asking for captain's privileges
13:43and denying it was a standard orbit change.
13:45I thought we were going for a launch.
13:46She would not do that, not without telling us.
13:48The whole point of this is not to change the blasted orbit.
13:51I did actually go over all this, you know.
13:52What the hell were you thinking about?
13:54Oh, dog.
13:54I'm sorry.
13:58I'll go and get some lunch.
14:03Look, will this go on my record?
14:05A lot of you buy us a drink at Galileo later on, all right?
14:08Yeah, don't worry about it.
14:09I have control.
14:10You have control.
14:13Um, don't you think you should put some clothes on?
14:17You chop the ends off the aubergine, then you plunge it into boiling water for about five minutes,
14:20then you scoop out the innards.
14:22You never do all that.
14:23No, Petra does.
14:25Then you bake the shells in olive oil.
14:27Meanwhile, you cook the onions, the garlic, the herbs and spices.
14:30Oh, if you're obsessed with food, you know that, Jim.
14:32Yeah, and then you add the chopped up bits from the middle of the aubergine.
14:35Dad, I don't want to talk about anything else.
14:36Why don't you shut up? You're so boring.
14:38Come and sit down here.
14:39Are you okay?
14:40Yeah, I'm fine.
14:41I'm so surprised I could spare you from the bridge, Daniel.
14:44Yeah, you're bringing excitement into all our lives.
14:46I wasn't to know. I was only taking precautions.
14:48Of course you were.
14:49Better safe than sorry.
14:51And the iman was so moved by this dinner that he fainted.
14:54In too much respect.
14:56Oh, poor Victoria.
14:58Hasn't anybody told you yet?
15:00Nobody's telling her because it's just a rumor.
15:03It doesn't mean anything anyway.
15:04People will insist on reading things into situations that don't actually exist.
15:09Horace!
15:11Huh.
15:14Huh.
15:15They're giving me my degree.
15:17On that presentation?
15:18Oh, no, it's appalling, isn't it?
15:20Once they decide you're out, you're out.
15:22Well, you'll just have to keep on up running to make you entertainments manager.
15:25I suppose we could have another poetry meeting.
15:27On the Iliar?
15:29Opera.
15:29Never.
15:30Japanese no theatre, something adventurous, commedia dell'arte.
15:34I've got to think what everyone will enjoy, but it's got to appear to brown and your brain's going to
15:38be very childlike.
15:40Game shows, beauty contests.
15:43That's it!
15:44Talent contest?
15:45Yeah!
15:49I think everybody will join me.
15:53Hey, what do you all think about a talent contest?
15:56Yeah, yeah, I'll do a rap, yeah.
15:58We can call it talent unlimited, talent unknown, talent waiting to be discovered.
16:03Can anyone enter?
16:05Not anyone, Anna.
16:06Everyone!
16:07Hey, we could do a stand-up comedy routine.
16:09Oh, I thought that was my job.
16:10Sorry I'm late, everybody.
16:12Right?
16:13Okay, it's that our navigation.
16:16Right.
16:17Oh.
16:17Iron, sweetie, have you finished your degree?
16:19How are you going to enroll as a first-year-old ever again?
16:22I hate extraterrestrial sociology anyway.
16:25You should still be taking things easy, I know.
16:26Don't work too hard.
16:27I'm trying to catch up.
16:29Oh, did you hear they had a coup at Karina?
16:31Oh, when?
16:32Yesterday.
16:32Well, they don't call it a coup, they call it a merger, but we all know what that means.
16:36Americans?
16:37No, Australians.
16:38That's if Brennan's terrified, they'll increase the dealer's servicing charges.
16:42Oh, they will, won't they?
16:43They'll have my money back.
16:45Eureka!
16:46The two of you in the same space lab.
16:48Hurts my eyes to look at you, dazzling to behold.
16:52What do you want, Byron?
16:53What can I do for you?
16:55I can offer you spots on the Saturday night talent extravaganza, the show to end all shows.
17:01Good.
17:02Why leave a cadet officer in charge of the bridge?
17:04He's not in charge of the bridge, Petra is.
17:07Anyway, what do you expect me to do?
17:08Stay on duty 24 hours a day?
17:10Yeah.
17:11He's a good lad, is Daniel.
17:12Coffee?
17:13Yeah, he's a very good lad indeed.
17:15Hey, hey, hey.
17:16He knows where he's going, and he's working hard to get there.
17:19Hello, Mr Wilkinson.
17:20Hi.
17:21Hey, congratulations.
17:24What for?
17:24I hear you got your degree.
17:26Oh, no, not yet.
17:27They might fail me on my final presentation.
17:28No, I don't think so, Mr Wilkinson.
17:30No, no, no, no.
17:30I don't think that's very likely at all.
17:32Anyway, I've already contributed to your leaving present.
17:37You know, there's a possibility I might be able to stay on the Ilya as entertainments officer.
17:40What?
17:41Just for a bit.
17:43What, after I've given 50 accusations to watch your present?
17:46Just when I sort myself out, you know, get myself a proper job.
17:49What, you a proper job?
17:50No way.
17:51Yeah, all right, all right.
17:53Hey, talent competition on Saturday.
17:56Why don't the two of you form a double act?
17:58I'm sure we can find some dumb animal for you to kick to death.
18:00Oh.
18:01What are we talking about, dumb animal?
18:03What do you need a dumb animal for when you've got me?
18:05Hey, cut it out, Byron.
18:07Come on, we're only joking.
18:08I'll tell you what, I'll give you a solo on me bongos.
18:10Yeah?
18:11Fantastic.
18:13I'm joking.
18:15Byron.
18:16Byron?
18:24So, we have to make this evening a success for Byron's sake.
18:28Daniel!
18:29Byron wants to give prizes for the worst odds.
18:31Can you get that for me, Jim?
18:32He doesn't say that.
18:33Oh, didn't he, Anna?
18:35Somebody get...
18:36Can somebody get an offer set, please?
18:39Daniel!
18:40Hey!
18:41I hear that you and Belinda Skinner are going to be giving us some lovely folk singing, Anna.
18:45And what's wrong with that?
18:46Nothing.
18:47Nothing.
18:47Hello?
18:48Daniel, do me a favor.

18:54Ah, she wouldn't like it.
18:55I'll be practicing my bongos in Mercedes.
18:57Oh, yeah?
18:58Look, why don't you, uh, take her on to the bridge instead?
19:01Look, are you sure I'll do all right?
19:03Well, that's up to you and her, old son.
19:06No, I mean, are you sure you trust me?
19:08I trust you.
19:16Oh, come on, Mercedes.
19:18You'll enjoy it.
19:20It's fun.
19:21And it's educational.
19:23I've been through this with you before, Bulldog.
19:25This was your exact and identical approach on Luna.
19:28Yeah, but it worked, didn't it?
19:31Yes, it did.
19:33When did Tasha and Simbo come back?
19:36Midnight, I think.
19:39What?
19:40You mean, like, Cinderella's?
19:44Yeah.
19:47Hey, what do you think about corporal punishment?
19:49What?
19:51I used to get beaten when I was at prep school.
19:53Oh, you didn't, did you?
19:54Mm.
19:55Poor thing.
19:56I thought that was banned everywhere.
19:57No, no.
19:58There are still places.
19:59It's a question of paying, though.
20:02I'll tell you, nobody's going to beat my baby.

20:16We just sit and do nothing about it.
20:17Himalaya now approaching dense radiation area.
20:21Ion plumes reading 647.2 millisieverts per square centimetre and rising.
20:27Recommend course alteration reference 3 delta 710035.
20:33Acknowledge.
20:35Sounds serious.
20:36No, not really.
20:38What do you mean, not really?
20:39I mean, no, no, not at all.
20:41Please acknowledge.
20:43Say something.
20:45I don't have to.
20:47Daniel.
20:47I did, look, Melody.

21:26He's worried about the Corina take-home.
21:28Why, he's not employed by Corina?
21:30No, but they subcontracted a lot of work for Deedless,
21:32and new bosses say it's uneconomic.
21:35What would you do with those no-deedless?
21:37Marry Jean-Francois and go live in France.

22:05must have been like.
22:06He's been wanting to flee the solar system on Daedalus
22:09since he was five.
22:11Is he all right?
22:12What?
