00:08Victoria, I'm sorry.
00:11It's not your fault, is it?
00:15I was so happy to stay out on the EVA.
00:19Nothing's happened that can't be put right.
00:24Oh, yes, it has, Max.
00:27It's all gone.
00:30It's like that.
00:32I've lost everything.
00:33It's all gone.
00:36It's all gone.
00:50It's all gone.
01:22It's all gone.
01:50It's all gone.
01:52Oh, for heaven's sake.
01:53All right, what was it nobody told Victoria about Melody?
01:56You mean you haven't heard?
01:57Obviously not.
01:58Go on, Anna, tell him.
02:00You've told everybody else.
02:01Lies.
02:01It's all lies.
02:03Well, for God's sake, somebody tell me.
02:05Otherwise, I'll die of suspense.
02:06Oh, she's pregnant.
02:07Up for death.
02:08What?
02:08With a child.
02:10Melody?
02:10Well, how?
02:11Well, if you don't know, Daniel.
02:12Oh, don't be so stupid.
02:13I think there might have been some dodgy contraceptive patches or something.
02:17Good God.
02:18Do you see a bit of gossip, eh?
02:20You can see why Anna couldn't wait to blab it all over the ship.
02:24Paul, there you are.
02:25Do you fancy buying a girl a drink in the club?
02:27There's some things we need to talk about.
02:28Oh, not more.
02:29The plot thickens.
02:31Yes.
02:31I told you I'd be glad of the escape, didn't I?
02:33Oh, hi, Thimbo.
02:34Do you want to come, too?
02:35I'd be honoured to drink at the captain's staple.
02:38Oh, well, thank you, but no thanks.
02:40I've got calculations to double-check.
02:44Well, it's reassuring to be in safe hands.
02:46I was never quite comfortable with Elliot in command.
02:51Right.
02:52I dare you to go to Professor Brelin's cabin and knock on the door and say,
02:56Charles, Charles, I can't bear it any longer.
02:59It's tearing me apart.
03:08Yes?
03:10It's Professor Brelin there, please.
03:12Oh, my God.
03:13Isn't anyone entitled to a moment's peace on this ship?
03:15Charles, it's a Miss Baganie for you.
03:18This had better be important.
03:22You rotten little cheat.
03:24You're not supposed to say it's a dare.
03:27You never said that.
03:28It's totally obvious, isn't it?
03:30There's no point in the game if you cheat, Anna.
03:32All right, make her do a forfeit or something.
03:34Let's just get on with it, shall we?
03:35Okay.
03:36You've got to answer a forfeit truth, and you've got to promise to answer it properly.
03:41I promise.
03:43Right.
03:45What's your plan of campaign for the elections?
03:49Well, Victoria just seems to be in a state of shock.
03:51And Melody's awfully quiet.
03:53How far away do we have to send that boy before he stops wreaking havoc?
03:57Ask me another.
03:58You know, the mystery to me is what they will see in him.
04:00So what are we going to do?
04:02Well, Melody just has to talk to Jean-Francois, but at the moment she wouldn't even consider it.
04:06We'll chat with her in the morning, woman to woman.
04:08Then we'll get together with Christophe and decide what to do.
04:10What about Victoria?
04:12I mean, she's always had a tendency for doom and gloom.
04:15Excuse me!
04:16Pathetic, Anna!
04:18Pathetic!
04:18Okay, what's the matter with Anna, eh?
04:21Playing spin the bottle, and she didn't want to answer one of you's questions.
04:24Yeah, mind you, it was a little bit below the belt, wasn't it?
04:27Perfectly fair, perfectly.
04:29If you're going to play, you've got to take a look at it.
04:31Spin the bottle?
04:32You know, I haven't played that since I was at the Crescent Moon in Abu Dhabi.
04:35You first again?
04:36Me?
04:37I am not playing spin the bottle.
04:38Oh, go on, it's really good fun.
04:40All sorts of skeletons come out of the cupboard.
04:42Come on, move it.
04:43Come on, move it as well.
04:44Right, come on then, someone.
04:45Spin the bottle.
04:50Right, Paul, truth, staircase, or promise?
04:54Uh, truth, that's not fair.
04:55Sure, sure.
04:57Your question is...
04:59Do you fancy Rebecca?
05:15Hi.
05:18Oh, hi.
05:20How are you feeling?
05:22Did you sleep all right?
05:24Oh, I've talked about babies.
05:27Hundreds of little Jean-Francois all running away from me.
05:31You don't have to be Freud to work that one out.
05:34Fear of rejection.
05:37I can't believe it.
05:40I can't believe it.
05:41I just can't believe it.
05:43You know, Victoria, sometimes God sends us these little problems to see if we have the strength to fight for
05:49what we want.
05:50You must be positive and you will emerge a stronger and better person.
05:54Is that supposed to be a comfort?
05:57Never mind.
06:01What do you think of this?
06:04I'm not sure about the slogan.
06:07You don't think it will grab people's attention?
06:11Oh, yeah.
06:12It'll do that all right.
06:15Have you ever?
06:17No.
06:18Let me tell you, I've had a few nasty scares.
06:22When you're as scatty as I am, you're bound to have.
06:25What do you think you'd do?
06:28I don't know if I'm the right person to ask.
06:31You know no one can make your mind up for you.
06:35No.
06:36I've always liked children.
06:39I used to help out at the space orphan's nursery.
06:41Yeah, on Saturdays they were sweet.
06:45I could toss a coin.
06:50Look, I know it's none of my business.
06:53But don't you think you ought to talk to Jean-Francois?
06:56Why?
06:57Well, a problem shared.
06:59Pointless.
07:00You don't have to go through this on your own.
07:02It takes two.
07:04Look, Jean-Francois is history, Rebecca.
07:07He's out of my life.
07:08If he's the last person in the universe I'd wanted to confide in.
07:11Look, it's my body, my baby and my problem.
07:15And I'm the one that's got to decide what to do.
07:17Full stop.
07:17I think you're making this harder for yourself.
07:19Yeah, well, I'll muddle through.
07:21Don't worry about me.
07:22Melody, it's my job to worry about you.
07:25Well, you've done your dutiful bursa bit and I'm grateful.
07:32What I really want at the moment is to be left alone.
07:35Okay.
07:37Well, the dutiful bursas bought you some bump from the essence.
07:41If you're not interested, just bring it in the bin.
07:43Hi, Bex.
07:44Hi.
07:44Hi, Melody.
07:44I've brought you a donut.
07:46What's the matter?
07:47Don't say you're feeling sick again.
07:49Oh, Fiona, don't you ever know when to be tactful?
07:51I thought I was bad.
07:52What?
07:53It wasn't me that told her.
07:55Told who what?
07:57Victoria about you, Bex.
07:59Look, it doesn't make any difference to me what Victoria knows or thinks.
08:04It's got nothing to do with her.
08:11What do you think?
08:14It's a nice picture of you, Anna.
08:16My friend, Hank, took it for me last time I was down in Space City.
08:19She's a great photographer, Hank.
08:21Yes?
08:23Hey, that's given me a great idea.
08:25A photography club.
08:27You won't tell Fiona, will you?
08:28I don't want her pinching any of my ideas.
08:31I wouldn't dream of it.
08:32I know Fiona laughs at me sometimes, but I've got a totally stunning program.
08:37It's totally stunning.
08:38Well, I better get the rest of these up, then.
08:41Anna.
08:43The posters and the, um, the slogan.
08:46Yes.
08:49They're great.
08:50They're really great.
08:52Thanks.
08:53Well, I've checked.
08:54Everyone else has been using the patch.
08:56No problems.
08:57Good.
08:57I didn't fancy having to open a creche.
08:59I already told you the patch wasn't to blame.
09:01Well, something's wrong with them.
09:02What about Mercedes?
09:03One patch was found to be releasing hormones at a slightly faster rate than it should have been.
09:07So what are you saying?
09:08The melody just got careless?
09:10Well, pressure of exams, strain of the relationship with Jean-Francois, too many late nights at the stardust.
09:15She may have got a bit lax about keeping her last patch in place.
09:19Or, of course, it might have been deliberate.
09:21You're saying she got pregnant on purpose?
09:23Well, I don't know.
09:24Why?
09:24She has enough trouble looking after herself.
09:26Yeah, exactly.
09:27You know, she's had a very unsettled life.
09:29Traumatic at times.
09:30And what she craves for more than anything is love and attention.
09:34Maybe to her subconscious, but there's a very real possibility that she may have seen getting pregnant as a way
09:38to give some sort of focus to her life.
09:40And assuring herself of Jean-Francois' undying devotion.
09:44Well, if it was that, it's all gone horribly wrong.
09:47Well, look, I talked to her this morning.
09:48She didn't seem terribly upset, just rather thoughtful.
09:52So what do you think she'll do?
09:53Oh, who knows?
09:54Not having Jean-Francois doesn't mean that she won't want the baby.
09:56She might even see it as a way to get him back.
09:58She's not interested in getting him back.
10:00I'd swear to that.
10:01Look, she needs careful counselling.
10:03I don't want her making the wrong decision.
10:05She's got her whole life ahead of her.
10:07You gave her the SMC literature?
10:08Yeah, but there's nothing in there she doesn't already know.
10:11Yeah.
10:13So, is somebody going to tell the father?
10:17Don't tell me.
10:18It's my job.
10:19I'm the versa.
10:21Well, I suppose if there is going to be a baby Jean-Francois running about on this ship, he ought
10:25to know about it.
10:27They look all right to me.
10:28I'll program them in now and say, tell Peter.
10:31Do you think Braden will want to double-check them?
10:33Oh, for heaven's sake, Thimbo, you're the captain.
10:36Why does everyone keep telling me that?
10:38Because you're behaving like a prized wimp.
10:41Yes, well, a fine world it would be if we were all domineering.
10:43Assert yourself, Thimbo.
10:45I'm only telling you this for your own good.
10:47I've got the makings of a brilliant captain.
10:49Petra, prepare for orbital parameters.
10:53Standing by.
10:54All right.
10:55I'll see you later.
10:57Oh, Mercedes, I've arranged for you and Paul to do an EVA tomorrow.
11:00Oh, I thought it was just a straightforward perpetual.
11:02Well, in my opinion, it'll take two.
11:04You're the boss, just as long as I'm not left passing in the screwdriver.
11:07Yes, well, you have to sort that out between you.
11:09Well, it is always used to getting his own way, where I'm concerned.
11:12Always has been, ever since the freshest dance on Island Nine.
11:16Oh, not Paul Drummond.
11:17Paul Lockwood.
11:18Oh.
11:19Paul Drummond's doing his seminar on emergency procedures during EVA.
11:23Brothers anxious that that should continue.
11:25Oh, anxious that you wouldn't be allowed to spend a moment alone together more like.
11:29No, no, I think he's just concerned how few people on the ship can do EVA.
11:33We've only got five.
11:34It's ridiculous we're all bearing about with you.
11:36Fascinating time we live in.
11:38All right, Thimbo, I love you and leave you.
11:40Oh, Mercedes?
11:42Yes?
11:43Can you make sure you're both suited up properly?
11:45I don't want to waste any more time than is absolutely necessary.
11:51I should have known she wouldn't give up that easily.
11:53If that's ridiculous, Victoria.
11:55Why?
11:56I mean, she's far more devious than people give her credit for.
11:59Look, she must have conceived before she even found out about you two.
12:03And presumably, once Jean-Francois dumped her, they weren't...
12:06Well, you know.
12:07So that's that theory out of the window, hmm?
12:11So, how pregnant is she?
12:13I don't know, actually.
12:15It's not too late.
12:16No.
12:17She can terminate if that's what she wants.
12:20No, she won't.
12:22But she's going to go through with it just to torment us.
12:25Look, I'm sure Melody's got more sense than to bring a child into this world just to torment you and
12:29Jean-Francois.
12:31She's trying to get him back.
12:32I know she is.
12:35Once Jean-Francois finds out, he'll probably feel obliged to marry her or something.
12:38Victoria, Melody's not interested in Jean-Francois.
12:41She doesn't give a monkey's about him.
12:42You know, she can't even be bothered to tell him.
12:45I promise you, even if Jean-Francois begged her to marry him, she wouldn't be interested.
12:52But I do think somebody ought to tell him.
12:55He's going to find out sooner or later and he's not going to thank us for keeping it a secret.
13:00Maybe he needn't...
13:01Oh, come on.
13:01Are you kidding?
13:03This is the hottest piece of gossip this century.
13:05I am.
13:06So, are you going to tell him?
13:09Or shall I?
13:26Please, Fimbo.
13:27It's highly irregular.
13:28It's the only comms link we have now we're descending into the gravity world.
13:31It'll only be for a few minutes.
13:33You know, it's hard enough for them to keep a relationship going as it is without being incommunicado.
13:38Oh, all right.
13:39But two minutes only.
13:41You're a dream, thank you.
13:42And it might be tactful if you just sort of turned your back so they can talk freely.
13:45You know, these young sweethearts.
13:47Don't worry.
13:48I'll have my fingers in my ears.
13:49Thank you, Fimbo.
13:50You know, if I didn't think it was disrespectful to the captain, I'd give you a big hug.
13:55If we could find a way of supplying free booze, we'd have it cracked.
13:59How about the International Tourist Board?
14:01What?
14:02Con them into thinking we're having cultural evenings or wine tastings.
14:05Nobody can go on holiday anywhere, Fiona.
14:07Ah, Fiona, a quick word.
14:09Sure.
14:10Well, I just want to appeal to your better nature and ask you not to torment Anna too much during
14:15these elections.
14:16Torment Anna?
14:17What do you mean?
14:18Come on, we both know she hasn't got a snowball's chance in hell of winning.
14:22Oh, I don't know.
14:23She says she's got a totally stunning programme, totally stunning.
14:26Come on, I want these council elections to be fair and square.
14:30May the best man win, isn't that right?
14:32Quite.
14:33Just as long as you know that any candidate indulging in character assassination will be disqualified.
14:40Yeah?
14:41Yeah.
14:42I'll see to it myself.
14:47Charming.
14:48Oh, he's just upset because I hit a raw nerve about Rebecca.
14:51Now, who's the most gullible member of the International Tourist Development Agency?
14:57Indonesia?
14:58Iceland?
14:59Wales?
15:00Victoria.
15:02I couldn't believe it when I got your message.
15:04We haven't got very long.
15:06Fimbo's waiting outside.
15:08How are you?
15:09I'm really missing you, you know.
15:10Me too.
15:12Oh, Sharon.
15:14You look too pleased to see me.
15:15Something happens, I thought you called me.
15:17Yes.
15:20I don't know how to tell you this.
15:23What's happened?
15:24Has somebody upset you or something?
15:26No.
15:26If she and her friends are ganging up on you.
15:32Melody is pregnant.
15:35She's going to have your baby.
15:37Oh, my God.
15:38It's got to change things.
15:39I mean, I know I realise that.
15:42No.
15:43No, no, it won't change anything.
15:45What if she decides to keep it?
15:46Well, it'll be her decision.
15:48You mean you wouldn't feel obliged?
15:52But it would be your child.
15:54Look, you've got nothing to worry about, Victoria, okay?
15:56You never will have.
15:57I love you.
16:00I love you, too.
16:02I suppose I'd better talk to her.
16:04Um, can you talk to Fimbo, get another comms link or something?
16:07This is another one of her games.
16:08I'm going to kill her.
16:12Victoria's talking to Jean-Francois right now.
16:14I've persuaded Fimbo to let her make the call.
16:16You know, he's not a bad old thing, really.
16:17You know I'm repairing those sideburners for him.
16:20It's often here with Mercedes.
16:22Well, just you stick up for him if she starts having a deal.
16:24Oh, don't you worry.
16:25I'm a Fimbo supporter through and through.
16:28We're a right pair of do-gooders, aren't we?
16:29Yeah, well, somebody has to be on this ship.
16:32It's funny.
16:32I'm not used to being on this side of the fence.
16:34Always used to be other people getting me out of scrapes.
16:36Well, I've always been totally solid and dependable.
16:40Surely not.
16:40Surely there's a wicked streak in me somewhere.
16:42Well, it's funny, you should say.
16:44Oh, no, not the process.
16:48How can anyone be so warm and so wicked?
16:52Come on, Anna, let's go and have a coffee.
16:54Somebody's going to wish she'd stayed on the Mars liner.
16:57Melody.
17:01I've just spoken to Jean-Francois.
17:03That's nice.
17:06I've told him about me.
17:10I thought perhaps you ought to know.
17:12I'm surprised you didn't have anything better to talk about.
17:16He wants to talk to you.
17:18Does he?
17:20Don't you think you owe it to him to talk this through?
17:24I don't think I owe him anything, actually.
17:28He's calling Comsen at 1345.
17:30Fimbo says as long as you're quick.
17:32Oh, I'll be quick.
17:33There's precisely nothing to discuss.
17:37Jean-Francois does care about you, Melody.
17:43No, Victoria.
17:45Jean-Francois cares what happens to him and him only.
17:51But if it makes you happy, I'll talk to him.
17:55Is it still time to finish your lunch?
17:57No, thanks.
17:58I'm off my food, rather.
18:02Well, you've just had a very lucky escape.
18:04Who, me?
18:05I've just heard Paul calling you every single name in the book.
18:08If he didn't have to do an EVA, I wouldn't fancy your chances.
18:12What are you on about?
18:13What have I done?
18:13You don't have to pretend with me.
18:15We've been in here all morning.
18:17Fimbo Lewis and Anna Begani.
18:21Personally, I thought it was quite funny, but Paul didn't seem to.
18:26I think you'd better find yourself a cast-iron alibi.
18:32Don't spend too long chitter-chattering.
18:33I don't want the lines clogged up.
18:35Oh, and I'm afraid I can't that you've come, Sam.
18:37Fimbo, if it was up to me, I wouldn't be chitter-chattering at all.
18:40I thought you and Jean-Francois had finished.
18:42I don't mean to pry, but it's as well to know these things,
18:44otherwise you just end up putting a foot in it.
18:46So you haven't heard?
18:48Oh, you haven't got back together again.
18:51No, but there's a slight complication.
18:54What?
18:55I'm pregnant.
18:57Island 5 to Ilia.
19:01Melody.
19:02It's so unfair.
19:03I mean, here I am, trying my utmost to give the people on this ship a good time,
19:07and all they can do is keep slagging me off.
19:09Oh, shut up a minute.
19:10Why? What are you doing?
19:10See, if I can get a link through comms then,
19:12if I get it right, we might be able to get a line out.
19:14Oh, great idea.
19:15We can get through to the agency and book some bands.
19:17Nearly there.
19:18That should do it.
19:19So, how's your research going?
19:22Don't be ridiculous.
19:23I didn't call you up at 400 acres a minute to talk about my research.
19:26Sorry.
19:27I know you used to go on about it all the time.
19:30Melody, is it true you're pregnant,
19:31or are you just playing some joke to upset Victoria?
19:34Same old charming jiffy.
19:36Pig.
19:37I'm sorry.
19:38I didn't mean that.
19:39You know I always wanted us to be friends.
19:41I just can't believe we're not always going to be.
19:43Turn it off.
19:44What?
19:44Turn it off.
19:46She'll tell me all about it later.
19:48I just want to make sure you're not going to do anything stupid.
19:51And what do you call stupid?
19:53You know what I mean.
19:54You're 18 years old, for heaven's sake.
19:56Are you saying I ought to have an abortion?
20:00Well, there's no chance of us getting back together, is there?
20:02And you can't possibly bring it up on your own?
20:04What a good Catholic boy you are.
20:07Melody, are we going to have a serious conversation about this or what?
20:10Melody, I'm sorry.
20:12Sorry, Jean-Francois.
20:13Looks like our time's up.
20:14Melody.
20:15Bye, jiffy.
20:16It's just we've got an important EVA to do.
20:19Yeah, it doesn't matter.
20:20I didn't have anything to say to him anyway.
20:22You're right.
20:23Hello.
20:24Thanks, Fimbo.
20:26Poor kid.
20:26What's she going to do?
20:27God knows.
20:29Right.
20:30Now, I'm going to have to take you through this.
20:31Time, as you know, is not on our side.
20:33What?
20:33Fire away, Captain.
20:34It's an intricate operation.
20:36It should be done by a qualified engineer.
20:37Or a robot.
20:38As Charles keeps reminding us.
20:40So, we just have to do our best, won't we?
20:42Mm-hmm.
20:43Well, the first thing I want to do is thank you both for supporting me on this.
20:45Fimbo, you're the captain.
20:46We're just obeying orders.
20:48So, let's get on with it, shall we?
20:49Hey?
20:51Melody.
20:52Hi.
20:53How are you?
20:55Oh, all right, I suppose.
20:56I've just spoken to Jean-Francois.
20:59How'd it go?
21:01No, I didn't, really.
21:03Well, what did he say?
21:06Not much.
21:07I didn't really want to talk about it.
21:10I'll see.
21:11Do you want to talk about it now?
21:15Yeah.
21:17Yeah, I think I do.
21:20It's going to be trickier than we thought, Fimbo.
21:23Yeah.
21:23If it wasn't for the safety override, it would be a walkover.
21:26I just can't get near to it.
21:29That's real to call it a day.
21:30We've tried.
21:32Rubbish.
21:32We're good, Dad.
21:33It's just going to take a bit more time.
21:36I've always cared about you, Melody.
21:37I always will.
21:38We've always been friends.
21:42I'll just pass it down.
21:48Destroy it a bit, aren't you, mate?
21:52Good old Jiffy.
21:53Good old Jean-Francois.
21:55Gets his guard into trouble, then runs up with somebody else, eh?
22:02Listen, Daniel.
22:05Remember the last time I cried on your shoulder,
22:07the week Jean-Francois gave me the push?
22:10When?
22:11When you found me in the dome.
22:13Yeah.
22:14I thought he said I hadn't got a pound.
22:18I think you might wish you hadn't the last time.
22:22Why?
22:25Do I have to spell it out to you?
22:27Jean-Francois isn't the father.
22:30Oh, right.
22:31Don't you?
22:36You'll have to come in now.
22:38It wouldn't take a couple of minutes.
22:40Without the safety override, I think we could do it, you know?
22:43Yeah, it's better than attempting a slim shot with the burners down.
22:46No, no, it wouldn't.
22:48I'm calling you in.
22:49Look, we've got this far, matey.
22:52Come on, Fimbo.
22:53We know what we're doing.
22:54The safety override is not built into the system without reason.
22:58It's deactivated.
22:59Oh, God, well, look, be careful.
23:01At least let me check that nothing's been downloaded.
23:03Nearly there.
23:04Careful, careful.
23:05That other point's live as well.
23:07It's all right.
23:09I've always had a steady hand.
23:12I've always had to thread my mother's needle when she was sewing on my buttons.
23:16You male chauvinist pig, you should have sewn your own buttons.
23:20No!
23:21No!
23:29No!
23:29No!
23:31No!
23:42No!
23:45No!
23:46No!
23:47No!
