00:06He's a jolly good man
00:46Jim. Sarah. Sarah, champagne? No. No, probably not a very good idea. What the hell do you think you're playing
00:58at? Well?
00:59Well, what did it look like? Shut up. I didn't ask you, did I? The trouble with champagne, you see,
01:04it makes people do things I don't normally do. You are only having a little kiss. Are you married to
01:08him? This is nothing to do with you. What's all the fuss about it? Jim! Sarah, I'm sorry. Sorry? I'm
01:16supposed to be going out with you and coming here to find her rolling all over you. Her name is
01:21Tranquility. Oh, well, that's a bit of a laugh, isn't it? Everybody around here goes out. You know, you are
01:25such a bitch. And I lent you my clothes as well. That's probably what it is. Tranquility.
01:29Oh, shut up, Daniel. Who did you think it was, Jim? Did you think it was me you were kissing?
01:34I shouldn't imagine so. Don't bother coming near me again.
01:37Sarah? Sarah?
01:49Come on, it's time.
02:06Good morning, Captain. What's the matter? Nothing. Anything to report?
02:11Petra?
02:13Course steady at Zulu Echo 4732. Velocity profile follows navigational predictions.
02:21I have control.
02:23You have control.
02:26Are you going to get some breakfast now?
02:29Finbo, what is it?
02:30What's what?
02:32Is it because I wanted you to come over last night? Does that upset you?
02:35I'm not upset.
02:37Finbo?
02:37I don't like it, that's all.
02:39I spent all day yesterday being told I was some sort of a space hero.
02:43Well, you know what I think of that. I'm not interested. But I do have some pride.
02:47I know you do.
02:48Just simple human pride. And I'm not asking for anything much.
02:52No.
02:52I just object to being summoned in the middle of the night to the captain's ear as if I was
02:56something out of a hurry.
02:59I wasn't summoning you for God's sake. I asked if you'd like to join me.
03:03You cannot be as cool as you like in Umbrella and Sweet and then call me up to ask me
03:07to come over and spend the night with you.
03:09Finbo, that's our situation. We can't be seen to be having a relationship, you know that.
03:15It doesn't mean we don't respect each other. I wasn't summoning you.
03:18Well, that's what it sounded like.
03:19Come on.
03:20Here's your breakfast, darling.
03:22Yeah.
03:26Look, Charles, if you want to have lunch, I'll be free from about one.
03:31No, I think I'll have a working lunch.
03:33You did a break. What time did you get up?
03:35Six.
03:36And where have you been?
03:38You know where I've been. I've been working on Aerial 9 data.
03:40See?
03:41Well, I lost Mosley yesterday with all that ridiculous dressing up and handing out medals.
03:46It's only for one day.
03:47Anyway, it's nice for Finbo.
03:49Finbo?
03:50Stood around like a wet weekend most of the time.
03:52He's shy.
03:54Shy?
03:55What that woman sees in him is beyond me.
03:57Well, it's certain that fine women eat a crazy salad with their meat.
04:02Salad's a bad life.
04:03Since when did you think that Natasha was a fine woman?
04:07I'm not an idiot, Charles.
04:08I might not get on with her, but I can see that she's remarkable.
04:12Mmm.
04:13She's a high flyer.
04:14Same age as you.
04:15And already achieved most of your ambitions.
04:17Well, I try not to be petty, Charles.
04:20But thanks for pointing it out.
04:22Of course, you've got the more exciting lover.
04:26How do you know?
04:28How do I know?
04:30I don't know.
04:30I don't know about that at all.
04:33I'll turn it off.
04:40Hello?
04:41Daniel Weatherby, good morning.
04:43Turn it off, for God's sake.
04:45I shall expect you in commsend in 20 minutes to discuss your final submission for graduate
04:50entry to the space service.
04:52What?
04:53You wanted to see me.
04:54This is your opportunity.
04:56Don't be late.
04:57I'm not feeling very well.
04:58You're in the army now, Weatherby.
05:00See you in 20 minutes.
05:02I don't like that man anymore.
05:04I can't be ready in 20 minutes.
05:07I mean, my eyeballs haven't even started working yet.
05:15Rise and shine, soldier boy.
05:19Sarah, you shouldn't take it all too seriously.
05:22Oh, well, that's good, coming from you.
05:24You haven't stopped moaning about her since she appeared in a puff of red smoke from the
05:28coal hole where she belongs.
05:29Well, Jim's very easily led.
05:31I don't need any amateur psychology lessons on my boyfriend, thank you.
05:34I mean, look, they were all as drunk as nudes.
05:35Get the fuck out!
05:41Ah, Victoria.
05:42Victoria, what have you got in here this morning?
05:44Basic electrical circuits.
05:45Can you leave them some set coursework?
05:47I've had some more data on aerial nine overnight.
05:48I can't.
05:49What?
05:50They need a tutor.
05:52Sarah's finding it very hard going at the moment, and you know Guy needs everything.
05:55Explain it to him 50 times.
05:56This is more important than a few students' hopeless quest for an education.
05:59I'll come this afternoon, I promise.
06:01You want to come over to the lab now?
06:02No.
06:03Well, surely one of them to be left just this once.
06:05I'm sorry, really.
06:09Morning.
06:09Morning.
06:10Morning, morning.
06:12What do you think about Brennan's vision of paradise beyond the Oort cloud?
06:16He gets some fancy ideas.
06:18Yeah, but you're a hopeless romantic yourself, surely?
06:21Me?
06:22No.
06:23Oh, come off it.
06:24All he knows about aerial nine is there's a possibility he may be able to support some form of life.
06:29Yes.
06:29And he wants to go there and put people on it.
06:32And you know who that makes him?
06:34No.
06:36God.
06:37First officer's croissant.
06:39Oh, Drummond.
06:40Didn't know you were here.
06:41Oh, that's all right.
06:42I'll share his.
06:42I don't want any.
06:44What, the captain brings a croissant with her own fair hands and you don't want them?
06:47Well, I do.
06:49Come and sit down.
06:50Join us, Natasha.
06:51Lovely smooth morning so far.
06:53I think I'll go and catch up on my sleep.
06:55Thanks.
06:56Anyway.
06:56You're welcome.
07:02Lovely girl, that.
07:06And now Sarah.
07:10Sarah.
07:12Your presentation on transient responses in RC circuits was due in two days ago.
07:16Yeah.
07:17I know.
07:17It's late.
07:18I'm sorry.
07:19I don't want to press you.
07:20Well, I'm glad about that.
07:22You've got to get this basic stuff under your belt before you can move on to reactive components
07:25in AC circuits.
07:26Yes, look.
07:26I will, Victoria.
07:27I'm just not feeling particularly brilliant today, all right?
07:30Yeah, okay.
07:32Let me know if you need any help, all right?
07:33I will do.
07:34Thanks.
07:36Right.
07:37I'm afraid we're going to have to cut the class short today.
07:39Oh, good.
07:39We will continue tomorrow.
07:48Right.
07:49Now can we get started on that aerial nine data?
07:51Yeah.
07:52I'll be with you in the lab in five minutes.
08:07Something's wrong, isn't it?
08:10What do you mean?
08:11Do you want to talk about it?
08:13There's nothing you can help me with.
08:15Victoria, I need you.
08:17If you're upset about something, please tell me.
08:22If I tell you, will you promise not to tell anybody?
08:26I couldn't bear it if they all got here.
08:43Two days ago, I had a letter from Jean-Francois.
08:46Professor Varotter has asked him to reconsider his PhD.
08:50Again.
08:51I thought he'd already accepted part of it.
08:53I see.
08:54Oh, Jean's had such trouble with that man.
08:57And now he's asked him to come up with a completely new project for his thesis.
09:01It took Jean months to work out the last one.
09:03He sweated blood over it.
09:04There's no point in him slogging away for years at something that isn't going to work.
09:08There was nothing wrong with the original thesis.
09:12Varotter just doesn't like him.
09:14And now he's suspended his grant.
09:15I mean, John's in a terrible state.
09:17They won't let him starve?
09:20No.
09:21No, they've given him a temporary job in the Runnymede College Library.
09:25All I was going to have.
09:26Well, there you are.
09:29As soon as he comes up with a decent project, they'll reinstate his grant.
09:32There's no need for you to get so upset about it.
09:34Yeah, but is he ever going to come up with anything that Varotter likes?
09:38Victoria Varotter is not an unreasonable man.
09:42You won't tell anybody about this, will you?
09:44Of course not.
09:47I don't mind Mercedes knowing.
09:50I just think Melody quite enjoys hearing he's having trouble.
09:56Is that it?
09:57Well, it's the first draft.
09:59Oh, come on!
10:02Well, I haven't been feeling very well recently, you see.
10:05Well?
10:07Look, this is graduate entry into the space service we're talking about.
10:12Not some orderly for the catering corps.
10:15You've only got one chance to make this presentation.
10:18It has to be good.
10:20What shall I do?
10:21Go back to your machine, wipe this and start again.
10:25Look, they want to know who you are.
10:28What qualifications you've got.
10:30What you've done, what you want to do.
10:32And why they should have you.
10:34Got that?
10:35Yeah.
10:50Go away.
10:52Sarah, please.
10:53Sarah, please what?
10:55And why should I let you?
10:58It's not what you think.
10:59And how do you know how I think?
11:01Well, I know what I'd be thinking if I were you.
11:03But it's not that Sarah...
11:05Jim, I am not as obsessed with sex as you obviously are.
11:10Sarah, please, can I see you?
11:13I'll meet you in the club.
11:16I don't really see that it makes any difference what sort of presentation you make.
11:22Tranquility. Try not to be totally stupid.
11:24They give jobs to the people they want to give jobs to.
11:27Well, that's obvious.
11:29In fact, I think that's the most obvious remark I've ever heard.
11:31I think he's only applying because you want him to.
11:34Well, you don't know much about Daniel in that case.
11:37Well, we do live together.
11:39In the same cabin.
11:41Look.
11:42Daniel is going to sit down for once in his life and do some real work.
11:46Without being distracted by anything.
11:50Why don't you let him speak for himself?
11:52He's not a flying officer yet, he's still allowed to talk.
11:56Right, Daniel, tell her.
11:59I want to join the space service.
12:01Okay.
12:02And you're going to do some serious work.
12:04And I'm going to do some serious work.
12:07Daniel, don't.
12:08If you muck this one up, you'll be like Byron.
12:11Can't do anything, can't go anywhere, the eternal student.
12:13I am going to work.
12:15You'll be amazed at me.
12:17You mean?
12:18Just watch me.
12:35I came to ask you a favour.
12:37Yeah?
12:37Will you cover for me this evening and tonight?
12:40It's only personal reasons. If you don't want to, just say so.
12:43Yeah, I don't mind.
12:44One day you'll snap out of it and look to see if there's any real men around.
12:48And you'll be there, will you?
12:50If you're lucky.
12:52Go on.
12:53You go off and have it out with him, whatever it is.
12:57Well, it were that easy.
13:01Well, now I've extended this bit so she's got all of this to run down.
13:04Oh, my poor little thing.
13:06What do you mean, we saved her from a certain death?
13:09Yeah, we're all a bit like this hamster, aren't we?
13:12Are we?
13:13Well, we can't get out here either.
13:17Up the little staircase, down the little run, round and round, up and down.
13:25Just like us.
13:32Hiya.
13:36Can you sit down?
13:38Yeah.
13:45I'm sorry.
13:47Why did you do it?
13:48I was drunk.
13:50Why?
13:53Earlier on in here.
13:55Well, the drinks were free and Fimbo was buying them, then Daniel Ports and...
13:58Why were you drunk, you idiot?
13:59I mean, why were you kissing her?
14:01Not everybody has to kiss her when they're drunk.
14:03Some people are just sick.
14:05I was.
14:06Hefty.
14:09Did you really want to kiss her, though? That's the whole point of it, isn't it?
14:11What am I supposed to say to that, Sarah?
14:14Oh, right, so you did want to.
14:15Well, yes.
14:16Yes, I suppose I did at the time.
14:19I've got to tell you the truth, haven't I?
14:21I'm not like Daniel.
14:23I'm no good at lies.
14:25And do you want to go on kissing her?
14:28No.
14:31Look, Jim.
14:33You know how hurt I was when Bob chucked me, went off and married somebody else.
14:38I don't want to get myself into that situation again.
14:40She's leaving the ship in a fortnight.
14:42Yes, but, Jim, next time there's free drinks, you could end up kissing somebody else.
14:48Well, there aren't free drinks very often, are there?
14:52I don't know. I'm going to need a few days to think about this.
14:55Oh, please, Sarah.
14:57I've got to know that I can trust you.
14:59You can, honestly.
15:03I don't know. Let me sleep on it.
15:07Do you think you know by tomorrow?
15:08You know you want to keep away from Daniel Weatherby.
15:12He's turned over a new leaf, Daniel.
15:14Oh, yes. Since when?
15:15Since this morning.
15:16He's going to work hard and he's going to write a wonderful presentation for his service application.
15:21And he's having nothing more to do with tranquility.
15:26He's, uh, he told me all about it.
15:29The average time from top to bottom takes 7.5 seconds.
15:33But if we made the slide a bit slippery...
15:35And then gave her something to perk her up a bit, it might be good for a few accusers.
15:39That was what I thought, but what are we going to grease it with?
15:44American anti-stretchmark oil.
15:46Yeah?
15:47Yes, you'll find it as you go into Melody's cabin through the door.
15:50It's down on the right on the table.
15:53I'm not going on that cabin again, Daniel.
15:55Anyway, you've got the access code. You get it.
15:57No, not me.
16:00He'll only take a few drops. She'll never miss it.
16:04Oh, dear. Poor Victoria.
16:06Sometimes I think she was born to suffer.
16:09As soon as she gets rid of that Frenchman, the better.
16:11He's a fool.
16:11Oh, no, he's not. He's not. He's just a bit gauche.
16:14I'll get into the women around here, I can't imagine.
16:17Running after men like Jean-Francois and Thimbo Lewis.
16:20A bit strapped for choice, Charles.
16:23Suppose you were on a desert asteroid with Thimbo Lewis, and only Thimbo Lewis.
16:28What'd I do? Get into my EVA suit and swim for it.
16:36Hello?
16:39Hello?
16:52Hello?
16:57Drummond says he'll cover for me tonight.
16:58Really? Why did you want him to do that?
17:01So that I could come here.
17:03Oh.
17:04Don't you want me to?
17:06It's not that, Natasha.
17:08Last night you got an estate because I asked you to come to my cabin, and that made you a
17:12plaything.
17:13I didn't exactly say that.
17:14I've gone and asked Drummond to stand in for me.
17:16I had to put up with all his comments.
17:19What comments?
17:20Does it matter?
17:21I suppose he thinks this is a big joke, doesn't he, you and me?
17:24He's jealous.
17:26He's doing us a favour.
17:27You. I didn't ask him.
17:32Do you want us to stop seeing each other?
17:36No.
17:38What then?
17:39I can't stand all this creeping about.
17:41What else can we do?
17:43You know regulations don't allow a captain and first officer to have this kind of relationship.
17:48It's as though you're ashamed of me.
17:49That's nonsense.
17:50You hardly spoke to me at all at that reception.
17:53I did.
17:53I mean everybody knows about us anywhere.
17:56This is childish.
17:57There's a difference between keeping our relationship quiet so that people don't have to take any official notice and denying
18:03it exists.
18:04I hate it.
18:05I hate the fact that we have to creep about at night and hide our feelings.
18:10It's the way it is.
18:12I didn't make it like that.
18:13There's no point shouting at me about it.
18:15But you don't mind, do you?
18:18Of course I do.
18:20I feel just like you do.
18:22I mean you're too pig-headed and full of self-pity to work that out.
18:25Natasha, listen.
18:26You'd better just leave it for the moment, Phil.
18:30Well.
18:31Like I said, Anne's an idiot.
18:33Love as Tiff Charles.
18:35Everyone has them.
18:36Except us.
18:38Hello darling, are you out there beyond the Aort Cloud?
18:40What happens when captains start fraternising with first officers?
18:45I hardly call it fraternising, darling.
18:48Anybody else?
18:49David.
18:52Tim, come on Tim, she's your hamster.
18:54Yeah, but I have a grasp of probabilities way beyond my ears.
18:57This isn't a question of probabilities, this is a question of form.
19:00Anything from 3 seconds to 15 seconds.
19:03No, she'd never do it in under 8. You've seen the way she climbs down.
19:05Back your judgement then, Tim.
19:06My new networking tells me only bookies make money out of betting.
19:11You've got such a lot to learn, Tim.
19:13You've got such a lot to learn.
19:15Or everybody else, you know the odds.
19:16How long will it take this idle, rotund and...
19:21frankly, porky hamster to descend from point alpha to point beta?
19:29Have you seen Natasha?
19:31Thought she was with you.
19:32She was.
19:34Had a row.
19:34How?
19:35You haven't seen her.
19:37You really haven't got the first idea, have you, Thimbo?
19:39Well, apparently not.
19:41You know what these women are like?
19:43You have to assert yourself, show them who's boss.
19:46You know, Drummond, before you came aboard, I had no idea men like you still existed.
19:50Yes, we're a dying breed, Thimbo, old son.
19:53Dying breed.
19:57It's your favourite.
19:59Chocolate chuckle pistachios.
20:02You're wrong, Jim.
20:04The weight of a woman's heart is not through her stomach.
20:07We tend to prefer the simpler things in life.
20:11Like fidelity.
20:12Look, Sarah, I've said I'm sorry.
20:14What do you want me to do?
20:15Tattoo it on my forehead?
20:18It's for jicing.
20:19Oh, right.
20:20Well, in that case...
20:21Oh, come on, Sarah.
20:23Life's too short.
20:24Yeah, and yours will be if I ever catch you with her again.
20:26Never again.
20:27I mean that.
20:29I only have eyes for you.
20:32Melody, you've got to stop Daniel and Tranquility.
20:34What's he doing now?
20:35Running a book on how long it takes Charles to come down her run.
20:38And I thought Daniel had turned over a new leaf.
20:40Well, don't look at me.
20:41I don't know anything about it.
20:42I mean, I wouldn't have minded.
20:43But I think they've drugged her.
20:45She was skidding down on her back.
20:46She's never done that before.
20:47Melody, calm down.
20:52I am going to kill your friend, Daniel.
20:55Am I in the way?
20:58You can take a ten minute break if you like.
21:08It's all a bit of a mess, isn't it?
21:12You didn't have to rush off like that.
21:15If anything, it makes it more obvious if being found out is what you're afraid of.
21:22You should have exchanged a few pleasantries with Breland first, then major excuses, then left.
21:28You obviously didn't read enough spy stories when you were younger.
21:31Bitterness does not become you, Finbo.
21:33I'm not bitter.
21:36But when the woman who ostensibly loves me is too ashamed of the fact to make it public...
21:40Finbo, I'm not ashamed.
21:41But I can't help it if the service...
21:43Oh, stop the service!
21:45What?
21:45They're all hypocrites anyway.
21:46How do you think half of them got where they are today?
21:48That still doesn't mean we can flaunt a clear breach of regulations.
21:52Why must you do everything by the book?
21:54Why can't you use your common sense?
21:57For common sense, read cowardice.
21:59I prefer to stand up for what I believe in.
22:01God, Finbo, you're too honest for your own good.
22:04At least I can hold my head up high and look the world in the eye.
22:10Oh, sorry. Have I interrupted?
22:13Not at all.
22:14Petra, stand by for shuttle docking.
22:183.45 seconds. A bit slow but not slow enough.
22:21Right, come on everybody. David, Sydney, come on.
22:22Daniel, Melody!
22:25Melody, I thought you were having a little lie down.
22:27Is this you working hard, Daniel?
22:29Is it?
22:30Well...
22:30Get back in the cage, Daniel.
22:32You can shut up.
22:33You've drugged her, haven't you?
22:34You've given her Popeye pills to make her go faster.
22:36Anyone can do any number of tests.
22:38That hamster is not drugged.
22:39This is you being serious about your future.
22:42Gambling on a hamster slide.
22:44Fraudidently gambling on a hamster slide.
22:45This is you making sure of my future, of our baby's future.
22:47Melody, we are up 150 eqs.
22:50They rolled the slide. They rolled it so she tumbles down.
22:53They have to!
22:55Look, her fur's oily.
22:57We have not oiled anything.
22:59How we the sort of guys would go around oiling hamsters.
23:02Yeah.
23:03It was a hamster race. It was a bit of fun.
23:06This isn't a very interesting place to be, you know.
23:08So why did you come here then, you lazy little slut?
23:12Come on, Melody.
23:13No, you listen.
23:15I am going to see Rebecca.
23:17And I am going to tell her that you will no longer stay in Daniel's cabin.
23:21Oh, yeah? And where the hell am I supposed to stay, huh?
23:24I don't care.
23:25You can go on a three-hour EVA with a two-hour oxygen pack as far as I'm concerned.
23:30I just want you out of that cabin.
23:31You okay?
23:43I am going to touch the sea I'm saying.
23:47What do you want to die on phone?
23:51Does that rest up, you'll be re-명ly?
24:00Does that rest up, them'll be unemployed.
