00:12This is the beginning. This is the day. You are watching the unfolding of one of
00:18history's great adventures, man's colonization of space beyond the stars.
00:28This is alpha control, zero minus one hour and fifteen minutes and holding. Delay caused by
00:34difficulty with liquid oxygen loading valve, zero minus one hour and fifteen minutes and holding.
00:42TV satellite control, takeover. Ladies and gentlemen, today the first of what may be as
00:50many as ten million families per year is setting out on its epic voyage into man's newest frontier
00:55for colonization, deep space.
00:58Reaching out into other worlds from our desperately overcrowded planet, a series of deep thrust
01:03telescopic probes have conclusively established a planet orbiting the star Alpha Centauri as
01:10the only one within range of our technology able to furnish ideal conditions for human
01:14existence. Even now, the family chosen for this incredible journey into space is preparing
01:20to take their final pre-lift off physical tests. The Robinson family was selected from more than
01:25two million volunteers for its unique balance of scientific achievement, emotional stability,
01:31and pioneer resourcefulness. They will spend the five and a half years of their voyage frozen into
01:37a state of suspended animation which will terminate automatically as the spacecraft enters the atmosphere
01:42of the new planet.
01:48This is Alpha Control. We are at zero minus one hour and fifteen minutes and still holding.
01:55We have also encountered an electrical power failure in our computer at the lunar tracking station.
02:03Zero minus one hour and fifteen minutes and still holding.
02:30Here now is the Jupiter 2, the culmination of nearly 40 years of intensive research and the most sophisticated
02:37piece of hardware yet devised by the mind of man. Bold in concept, brilliant in execution,
02:43this most delicate yet most colossal of instruments makes possible man's thrust into deep space and
02:49will soon set out on its quest for a new world. This super spaceship stands two stories high. The upper
02:57level contains a fantastic sophisticated guidance control system. An electronic elevator connects both
03:04floors of the intergalactic vehicle. The upper and lower levels are operationally self-contained.
03:10Here on the lower deck, pulsating with unbelievable force are the great atomic motors that will power the
03:17ship to new worlds. Spectacular but functional living quarters, including staterooms and galley, complete this level.
03:31There is one additional member of this expedition, an environmental control robot, key among whose many vital
03:37functions will be the final analysis of the physical environment of the new planet. This historic flight preceded by nearly
03:46a decade of
03:47intensive research and preparation has been shrouded by the most rigorous security precautions. Other nations,
03:53an even more desperate need for breathing room on our critically crowded planet, are racing the United States in this
03:59project. Countries that would go to any lengths of sabotage.
04:35This is alpha control. Zero minus one hour and fifteen minutes. And still holding.
05:03At exactly launch plus eight hours, inertial guidance system
05:11destroyed. Radio transmitter destroyed. Cabin pressure control system destroyed.
05:21Destroyed.
05:33Turn that thing off, soldier. Sorry, Colonel. There is no personnel allowed in here after zero minus six hours.
05:41Do you know who I am, soldier? Sir, I wouldn't care if you were president of the USA. I'd still
05:45have to put you under arrest.
05:46Of course, that's your duty. But just for the record, I came in here to check the helium-nitrogen ratio.
05:51What? I had a sudden feeling I turned a valve the wrong way. You know how it is when you
05:56get those feelings that won't let you sleep.
05:57I had to come back and make sure. Sorry, sir, but I still have to turn you over to the
06:01officer of the day.
06:02Naturally. Don't apologize. You've got your job and I've got mine, eh, soldier?
06:06Hey, soldier?
06:06Here.
06:24Sir?
06:26Warren.
06:27прямо here.
06:36Mr.
07:04I'm calling Aeolus 14 Umbra.
07:09I have reprogrammed the robot. His power has been activated.
07:13Exactly eight hours after launch, the robot will destroy the spaceship with all hands aboard.
07:18Repeat. Eight hours after launch, the robot will destroy the spaceship.
07:25This is Alpha Control. All technical difficulties have been resolved and we are resuming countdown.
07:31The countdown stands at zero minus one hour and 14 minutes.
07:35All systems are now green and gold.
07:48бал is continuous and we have constant climate done.
07:52Stop buying hymn Appreciate it.
07:54Ball is full with you, don't get to work through your eyes.
07:56We have more dwindling artefald and a big fight.
07:58Whoeverrol is bу Keduo is exactly different ...
07:58The winner is better to...
07:59Have a strong diamond BEAUFيت.
08:34¶¶
08:51In these last minutes before liftoff, we're hoping to bring you a few words from the members of the Brave
08:55family making this historic journey.
08:57But I'm informed by Alpha Control that Dr. John Robinson, his wife Maureen, and their three children, Judy, Penny, and
09:04Will, are still undergoing their pre-liftoff final physical checks.
09:15¶¶
09:16Am I okay, doctor? Did I pass?
09:19You'll do.
09:20Did you hear that, Mom? I'm okay.
09:25Yes, Will, we heard.
09:27We weren't worried, were we?
09:29No.
09:29No need for any of you to worry about your physical condition.
09:32You're all in tough shape and ready to go.
09:35I envy you your adventure.
09:37Thank you, doctor.
09:39This is Alpha Control.
09:41The Robinson family will prepare to board the space vehicle at once.
09:45It is now zero minus 33 minutes and counting.
10:04Ready?
10:07Are we?
10:09I should say something light and clever, shouldn't I?
10:13I just can't.
10:14This is Alpha Control.
10:16The Robinson family will now board the spacecraft.
10:22We're ready.
10:25We're ready.
10:29We're ready.
10:30We're ready.
10:38We're ready.
10:41We're ready.
10:43We're ready.
10:49Hi, Don.
10:50Well?
10:52Hi.
10:56Naturally, you're all well acquainted with Major Donald West by this time.
11:00Sure. He's our pilot.
11:01Only a matter of speaking.
11:03Just in case something would happen to go wrong with the automatic guidance system,
11:07which isn't very likely.
11:08If you wake up and find me driving, you'll know you're in trouble.
11:44Minus 3 minutes and counting. Technicians complete. Final checkouts.
11:49Major. Dr. Robinson.
11:53Goodbye, General.
11:54Just taking a last look. Everything snug and secure, I trust.
12:16And now, one moment, please.
12:20Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States.
12:24Fellow Americans, friends all over the world,
12:28upon the success of this mission...
12:30I'll get a picture.
12:32...will depend whether the explosive increase of population on this planet
12:36will ultimately lead to a disaster from which none will be exempt
12:42or to a new dawn of plenty for all of humanity.
12:46None can predict the outcome of this audacious venture to the very stars.
12:52To those who have staked their lives upon this bold expansion of man's horizons,
12:59I humbly say, go in peace.
13:02The prayers of mankind are with you.
13:08Inspiring. Truly inspiring.
13:13Leading disconnect check of non-flight systems.
13:18All circuits off. Power pack is removed.
13:22This is Alpha Control. Zero minus two minutes and counting.
13:28You better hurry, Doc.
13:29Yes, yes. Coming right along.
13:49Astronauts, in the following order, will enter freezing tubes and prepare for launch.
13:55Will Robinson, Penny Robinson, enter tubes.
14:07Dr. Maureen Robinson, enter tubes.
14:12Dr. Maureen Robinson, enter tubes.
14:12Miss Judy Robinson, enter tubes.
14:15Miss Judy Robinson, enter tubes.
14:15Let's make sure that the four-man can get your coaster.
14:16Let's look.
14:430 minus 80 seconds.
14:45Range clearance to launch.
14:48Major Donald West, enter 2.
14:590 minus 65 seconds.
15:090 minus 55 seconds and counting.
15:12Dr. John Robinson, enter 2.
15:200 minus 45 seconds.
15:23Activate freezing units.
15:27Electromagnetic miracles now come into play.
15:29This cosmic glow, induced through the genius of advanced technology, will put the Robinson
15:34family and Major West in limbo, enabling them to make an endless flight while aging but a
15:39second in the time of man.
15:41From this moment on, our space travelers will be in a state of suspended animation, which
15:46will last for the next five and a half years.
15:55Verify all hatches secured.
16:01Get me out!
16:050 minus 35 and counting.
16:10Help!
16:11Get me out!
16:12Remove gas transfer and propellant vent umbilical.
16:320 minus 30.
16:351,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
16:51,000,000,000,000...
17:1315 seconds, 10 seconds, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.
17:42All systems here at Alpha Control are green and gold.
17:46The trajectory now profiles properly.
17:48The spaceship is now passing through the point of maximum dynamic pressure.
17:52If it holds its present attitude, it will reach perfect escape velocity.
17:57Remote readings here at Alpha Control appear normal with no indication of change.
18:03Medical telemeters show all members of the Robinson family are safe and well.
18:07Still in their total blackout of suspended animation.
18:323, 2, 3, at 2, 5, 2, at 1, 0.
19:03calling Aeolus Forti-Numbra.
19:11Aeolus Forti-Numbra, come in, please.
19:14Do you read me?
19:16Mission accomplished.
19:21Mission accomplished.
19:24What do I do now?
19:26What clever instructions do you have for me now?
19:30How much more money are you going to pay me for this excursion?
19:41Aeolus Forti-Numbra.
19:43Do you know where I am?
19:45Do you know?
19:48Do you know?
20:08Incompleted circuit.
20:11Incompleted circuit.
20:14Damage may result.
20:40Let's go.
20:45Damage averted. All systems operative.
20:57Alpha Control. Hello, Alpha Control.
20:59This is Colonel Zachary Smith calling Sir Jupiter II.
21:01Can you return us to Earth? Repeat, can you return us to Earth?
21:07Alpha Control, this is Jupiter II!
21:12Alpha Control, this is Lunar Tracking Station 2 Omega.
21:16Go ahead, Lunar Tracking.
21:18We've got a problem with the Jupiter II flight profile.
21:21It is now negative. Repeat, negative.
21:24Hello, Lunar Tracking. Hello, Alpha Control.
21:26Does anybody need me?
21:28Roger. We've been working on it.
21:30Our computers tell us there's close to 200 pounds excess weight aboard.
21:34It has altered the flight pattern.
21:36Abort the mission. Can you hear me? Abort the mission!
21:40Alpha Control, initiate an immediate course change.
21:43Jupiter II is headed directly for a massive meteor swarm.
21:47Negative. Vector controls aren't effective.
21:50Welcome touitive people!
21:53Z reins that motors ideas!
21:53흑-ish!
22:14Can you hear me?
23:00Heat elevators here at Alpha Control show an outbreak of fire back of all magna panels in the spaceship.
23:06Unless fire extinguishing apparatus functions properly and control regeneration occurs immediately, all hope is now gone.
23:17Let's go.
24:02Major West, Major West, can you hear me?
24:12Major West.
24:16I am Major West.
24:21Well, who are you?
24:26Major West, we've got to take over the controls, fast!
24:42I know you. Look, videos! Get us out of the flight path, quick!
24:56Good. Good. Stay with it now.
25:00What the devil are you doing upward?
25:03I was trapped just before liftoff. Your helium ratio.
25:06I neglected to adjust the balance control valve.
25:09The hatch closed before I could...
25:11It's horrible.
25:12With your extra weight load, no wonder the automatic navigator didn't pull us out of it in time.
25:27We're out of it.
25:31But we'll never know how far off course.
25:33Can you put us about? Get us back home?
25:38Can you?
25:43What have you done to the transmitter?
25:44I don't know. I must have lost my head.
25:47I was trying to reach out for control.
25:54Shoot us back for what it is.
25:55Every second you wait sends us thousands of miles in the wrong direction.
25:58What are you doing?
25:59Waking up the Robinsons.
26:01No. Don't wake them.
26:03Why not? It's their lives too, and since I'm the only one who can pilot this ship, I'll make the
26:07decisions.
26:09Have it your way then. Make it a family outing. Why not?
26:59Come on!
27:14Dad!
27:40She'll be all right now.
27:43Oh, well...
27:44Oh, it's all right, dear. I'm fine.
27:52You really had us worried.
27:54Dr. Smith, you shouldn't be here at all.
27:57Precisely the point I'm trying to make,
27:59without much success, I might add.
28:04Where's Officer Torrey?
28:05It's out there. Somewhere.
28:08Gee, it looks like we're standing still.
28:11Well, of course. We don't know how far yet.
28:14Don's trying to determine whether we should return to Earth or not.
28:17There's no question about what we must do.
28:19You saw your wife's metabolic reaction to the suspended animation state?
28:22I warn you, Robinson, she might not survive another such trauma.
28:27Don't worry, darling. No matter what we decide,
28:29I won't let you back in that tube.
28:32The media's clobbered us.
28:35Our whole control system's badly damaged.
28:36You're supposed to be a space pilot and qualified. Improvise something.
28:41Turn us around and get us back to Earth.
28:43If I were you, Colonel, I'd keep my mouth shut.
28:47Don!
28:48You're responsible for this mess we're in.
28:50Really, Major?
28:52Have you bothered to wonder who revived you?
28:54You tumbled out of there like a block of ice, dead as a coffee mail.
28:57Who do you think brought you back to life?
29:00Thanks.
29:03Our payload was calculated to a fraction of an ounce.
29:07Without his extra weight, we would have ducked the media storm automatically.
29:10Maybe and maybe not.
29:13But without me, not one of you would be alive now.
29:15All right, Colonel Smith.
29:18We're properly grateful.
29:20Right now we have to make a decision.
29:22I'm not sure we should turn back even if we can.
29:26Look here.
29:26You people volunteered for this expedition. I did not.
29:29I have no business being here. I demand to be taken back to Earth.
29:33Don, do you have any idea of our present position?
29:35Not precisely.
29:40Maybe we can calculate it.
29:41Luckily, the atomic clock is still working.
29:43It's nearly eight hours since takeoff.
29:49Now these vector tapes, they could be of help.
29:56I was afraid of that.
29:57What is it?
29:58The tapes are damaged.
29:59Well, is there any way we can prepare the inertial navigation system?
30:02I can try.
30:03But it means shutting off the artificial gravity for a while.
30:06All right, do it.
30:07Will, Penny!
30:12Now listen.
30:13We're not going to have any gravity for a while,
30:15so we're all going to have to hang on.
30:16Oh, boy!
30:18Oh, boy.
30:20Oh, boy.
30:40Longer!
30:41All right.
30:41Yes.
30:42Now hold on.
30:46Oh.
30:47Get in.
30:48Oh.
30:48Get in.
30:49Oh!
31:05Look at this.
31:27Hey, that looks like fun.
31:31Hey, Penny, watch me do a flip.
31:38Turn around a bit.
31:40Oh, Penny.
31:41Oh, pretty good, Penny.
31:42Look out, you'll get your head.
31:43Look out now.
31:45Do a flip.
31:47Hey, Penny, can you do this?
31:49Hey, it's fun.
31:52Just turn around.
31:56Gee, that looks like fun.
31:58Would you like to try it?
31:59Having fun up there?
32:02Look out, you're going to bump into each other.
32:05Oh, my.
32:06Oh!
32:11Oh, look at me, Will.
32:13Oh, my.
32:14Come on now.
32:14Oh, no, I don't want to come down yet.
32:16Wait a minute.
32:17Come on, Will.
32:17Give me back down for me.
32:30Hey, this is fun.
32:33Here I go again, Penny.
32:45Let exactly eight hours destroy.
33:07Hey, what are you doing there?
33:10You're not supposed to do that.
33:13Now, who's the doctor?
33:14You or me?
33:18But they told us in one of the briefings.
33:20Would you like me to teach you to program him to play chess?
33:24You play chess, don't you?
33:25Ever play on a three-dimensional board?
33:28Did you know that I was the grandmaster of the Oxford University Chess Society for three years running?
33:34Oh, that.
33:36You have to disconnect it when you want to teach him something, or he's apt to go right off and
33:39do it.
33:39Chess board or no chess board?
33:42My dad said you were left aboard when you came down to adjust the helium nitrogen intake.
33:46That's right.
33:48But the helium nitrogen intake valve's on the upper lever.
33:52Oh?
33:53Well, who said anything about the intake valve?
33:56It's the emergency supply I was concerned about.
33:59Oh.
34:00Then I'd better go back and tell them they were wrong about you.
34:03Wrong?
34:04Why, what did they say?
34:06Well, Major West said that when he went to cadet school, an excuse like yours wouldn't have got him out
34:11of Sunday Chapel.
34:12He said that, did he?
34:14Well, that's the military mind for you.
34:17Kill or be killed.
34:20That's all they understand.
34:21Oh, but he's not like that.
34:23Wait a minute.
34:25Say that again.
34:27I said he's not like that.
34:29That's what I was afraid of.
34:31Open your mouth a minute.
34:35How long have you had that?
34:37Had what?
34:38That touch of virus on your tongue.
34:40I don't know.
34:41Well, you can feel it, can't you?
34:44I guess so.
34:46I must have been blind not to spot it before liftoff.
34:49I thought freezing kills any virus.
34:52You thought?
34:54It's a good thing I'm the doctor, not you.
34:57Do you know what that virus would have done while the rest of your body was in a state of
35:00metabolic deanimation?
35:03Just taking it over, bit by bit.
35:07After five years, there'd be nothing left but the metal in your space suit.
35:11All the rest of you would be one big raging mass of virus.
35:16I'd better go and tell your mom and dad.
35:18We've got to return to Earth immediately.
35:22But...
35:22You stay right there.
35:25In quarantine.
35:53You stay right there.
36:15I'm an officer in the United States Space Corps, not a school bus driver.
36:20I'd like conditions to be perfect, but just because they're not isn't reason enough for me to abort a $30
36:24billion mission.
36:26Major, that $30 billion is just as much my money as it is yours.
36:30And I don't like to waste it either.
36:31But I'd gladly waste a hundred times that much to safeguard my family.
36:36Now, I say we turn back.
36:39Don't you have an opinion?
36:40No, I don't.
36:41Not until we've checked every component inside out and know exactly how we stand.
36:45And then?
36:46And then I'll let the computer make the final decision.
36:49And will the computer also take into consideration a man's love and concern for his family?
36:55Or has all that been put into cold storage for the duration?
36:58Maureen, we knew perfectly well what we were getting into.
37:04Dr. Smith, is it possible that certain parts of the body don't reanimate as quickly as others?
37:11The heart, for instance?
37:13Mrs. Robinson, I'm afraid the decision no longer rests in your hands.
37:17Or the computer's.
37:19What do you mean?
37:21Your son.
37:23What about him?
37:24Well, there's no cause for alarm.
37:25Not yet, at any rate.
37:29Stop it!
37:30Stop it!
37:31I order you to stop!
37:34Negative!
38:09Destroying!
38:10Destroying!
38:27No, no, a boat! Can you hear me? A boat! A boat! A boat!
38:40Destroy!
39:03We're going into a hyperdrive! We're under control!
39:16He's going for the pressure control!
39:24Try to get him from the other side!
39:34The coal pack! Pull out the coal pack!
39:42John, look out!
39:50Penny, hang on!
39:53He's breaking through! Pull out the coal pack!
40:45It's incredible.
40:46Not one constellation you can recognize.
40:49Where are we?
40:54Will.
40:56Where's Will?
41:00Will!
41:04Am I still in quarantine?
41:08Quarantine?
41:09It's nothing.
41:12Nothing that matters now.
41:19Nothing.
41:21Hello Alpha Control.
41:23This is lunar tracking station, Copernicus.
41:25Jupiter 2 moving at incredible speed.
41:27Far off course, beyond range of our tracking instruments.
41:34White House, this is Alpha Control.
41:37Message for President on Scrambler.
41:42Mr. President, status control on Jupiter 2.
41:47As of this moment, the spacecraft has passed the limits of our galaxy.
41:53It's presumed to be hopelessly lost in space.
42:01I'm sure it's the NGS scanner.
42:03If you can fix it, we might be able to tell what we are.
42:06I'll do my best.
42:07Look, for the last time, space walking's part of my business.
42:11Let me do it.
42:12Now, we've been through that.
42:13You're the only one that can pilot the ship.
42:15I'm expendable and you're not.
42:54We've been running in the air in the Milky Way.
42:58I will all take到 the boat to the star.
42:59After he's gone, we've taken more into flight organizationales.
43:01And yet, he should not be fun.
44:25You all right?
44:26I feel as if I were hit by a truck.
44:32Can you see the scanner?
44:34Yes.
44:35It's damaged all right.
44:39Can you fix it?
44:41Sure can try.
45:29No.
45:30No.
45:38Don, what can we do?
45:40How can we get a line to him?
45:42By rocket gun.
45:44She hasn't drifted too far away.
45:48Keep talking to her.
45:52John, we're going to get a line to you.
45:55By rocket gun.
46:01Dad!
46:05Will, where's the ratchet wrench?
46:06Colonel!
46:09Oh, uh, strange.
46:11I must have picked it up by reflex.
46:13But I'm only trying to make myself useful.
46:16Tell John I'm coming out to shoot him this spare line.
46:19Don's going to suit up now.
46:21He's going to shoot you the spare line with a rocket gun.
46:24No, not Don.
46:25He's got to stay with the ship.
46:28There is something useful you can do, Doctor.
46:31Suit up.
46:32I?
46:34In the airlock?
46:35My dear man.
46:37In the first place, I am not an official member of this expedition.
46:40And in the second, I'm simply not conditioned for it.
46:44The heart, at my age, it could go at once.
46:48For this ancient body.
46:50Don, we're losing him!
46:58Don, let me do it.
46:59I know I can.
47:01That's all right, Judy.
47:02Mother, I can do it.
47:03Go ahead, my dear.
47:17She's ready.
47:53Mother, I can do it.
48:03Mother, I can do it.
48:30Mother, I can do it.
48:31Mother, I can do it.
48:31Baby, hey, yeah, yeah.
48:37Oh, my dear.
