00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02This is my childhood pedal tractor.
00:04So your grandfather had a big one?
00:06Yep.
00:06And he bought you a small one?
00:08Yep.
00:08That's awesome.
00:09Oh, man, that is cool.
00:11I called Rick to look at an old bumper car.
00:15We've got to figure out where we're putting the motor, where we're putting the battery, how we're wiring it.
00:19You're starting to scare me a little bit.
00:21The crew's been working like crazy, so we're going to blow off a little steam.
00:24Go, go, go, go!
00:26You better run and hide.
00:27Ah, f***!
00:29Remember back in the day when things were made by hand and people took pride in their work?
00:35My name's Rick Dale, and I bring these things back to life.
00:40Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:44There's no owner's manual for what we do, but there's no job we can't handle.
00:59We recently moved our entire business into a brand new shop, so things have been even crazier than usual around
01:06here.
01:06The old shop was like my home for 30 years, so leaving that place choked me up a bit.
01:11But the roller coaster's finally slowing down, and we're all adjusting really well to our new home.
01:18This thing's got a lot of dingers on it.
01:20Yeah, I know.
01:20One thing that concerns me about the big shop move is that walk-in customers might not be able to
01:25even find us.
01:29Coming in hard.
01:30But luckily for us, if you fix it, they will come.
01:34Hey, how are you?
01:35Good, how are you doing?
01:36I'm Rick.
01:37Rick Eddy, nice meeting you.
01:38Good to meet you.
01:39What you got?
01:40Got a Farmall Kids tractor.
01:43A tractor?
01:44A tractor.
01:44Tyler, we're going to need more space.
01:45He's got a tractor.
01:47No.
01:49Never mind.
01:50I came down to Rick's registration today to see if he could restore my Farmall tractor.
01:54Set this up here.
01:55I'd like it restored because it's a childhood memory I have of my grandfather who passed away two years ago
01:59at 90, so it's in his memory.
02:01Thanks for bringing this in.
02:02This is bad.
02:03This is my childhood pedal tractor.
02:06It's about 40 years old.
02:07Really?
02:07Yeah, it's modeled after my grandfather's tractor.
02:09Wow.
02:10So I got two different photos, one on the ranch and one on my grandfather.
02:12Oh, wow.
02:13Cool.
02:13And that's the tractor.
02:14And sure enough, there's a Farmall right there.
02:16That was my grandfather during the World War II.
02:18Wow.
02:19So your grandfather had a big one?
02:21Yep.
02:22And he bought you a small one?
02:23Yes, he did.
02:23That's so cool.
02:25Pedal cars were modeled after full-size vehicles, so kids could pretend like they were grown-ups.
02:29They had everything from fire trucks and planes to tractors and trains.
02:34So how would you like it done?
02:35I'd like it restored probably back to where it was originally, just Farmall red or International Armister red.
02:39Okay.
02:40I don't know that's possible, but our family would like probably to dedicate to my grandfather, maybe have a picture
02:44or something put on the seat possibly.
02:46So you're going to put your granddad's picture here?
02:48Yeah, correct.
02:48My niece is two, and it's going to be her tractor basically.
02:51It's going to her, and the next generation of kids will have it.
02:53All right.
02:53Well, that's very, very, very cool.
02:56Now, what the heck is all that orange junk all over it?
02:58I know what it looks like.
02:59I mean, those are paintballs, like, those are paintballs?
03:02Yeah, I have my own gun, trust me, I know.
03:04But they're little balls like the size of marbles that are filled with paint.
03:07You shoot each other with them.
03:08I can't blame whoever shot this thing up, because if I had a big red metal target sitting in my
03:13backyard, oh, wait.
03:17What am I looking at as far as time and stuff?
03:20Okay.
03:20Everything comes apart.
03:22Okay.
03:22You know, the axles come off, the wheels come off.
03:25We'll split it in half.
03:26And then because this is aluminum, we can go ahead and just blast away.
03:29We'll blast all that off, rejuvenate the wheels.
03:31Okay.
03:32We'll replace this in here.
03:34Okay.
03:34And all the decals.
03:35I'm noticing there's decals all over it.
03:37And then we'll clear it, and then we'll start assembling and put it all back together.
03:41Okay.
03:42So what are we looking at as far as price?
03:44Price?
03:46I'm thinking probably $2,500 to $2,800 to get the whole thing done.
03:51Okay.
03:53Unfortunately, that's just what the price is going to be, to be able to bring it in here, get all
03:56of our guys on this thing, to get it done right.
03:58And that's what we're all about, is making it right.
04:00And if it lives for another three generations, I see it being worth it.
04:04It's understandable.
04:04Appreciate that.
04:05Yeah.
04:05Let's do it.
04:06I'm all for it.
04:07Let's go.
04:07Awesome.
04:08Awesome.
04:08Okay, cool.
04:09Hey, thanks.
04:10Thanks a lot, guys.
04:10Appreciate it.
04:11Let's go to the office, and I know Tyler's going to put that in line.
04:13You know.
04:14I know the drill.
04:15Good.
04:16It makes me want to go play paintball.
04:18Whatever.
04:26Brett Lee and I are heading over to my friend's antique store to see if he wants to get something
04:30restored.
04:31This guy has an amazing collection, so I'm really excited to see what he has for us.
04:36Hey.
04:37Hey, Rick.
04:38I'm glad you made it.
04:40Thank you for coming.
04:41You bet.
04:42How you doing?
04:43Brett Lee.
04:43Jim.
04:43Nice to meet you.
04:44Man, you got some cool stuff in here.
04:46We get things from all over the world.
04:49We sell unique and unusual items.
04:52That thing is badass.
04:53That's a little roaster.
04:55It's a 1905, and it was out in New York.
04:58These were sitting on the side of the streets, and they would vend out of these.
05:01This actually roasted it, and then they served it right out of here.
05:04Look at that thing there.
05:05What is that?
05:06It's like a debt chair.
05:08Actually, it's hand-carved in Bali.
05:11This is bad.
05:11Look at these skulls.
05:12I dig it.
05:13Sit here a second.
05:14Yeah, let me.
05:16In case one of you guys wants to go down Las Vegas.
05:19No way.
05:21There you go.
05:22Here to pick up parts for Rick's Restoration.
05:27I like it.
05:28The idea for a chair like this is really cool.
05:31I love the job that someone did to really spice this thing up.
05:35Let me show you what I brought you here for.
05:38This is something that I really wanted you to fix up.
05:43Oh, man, that is cool.
05:45I called Rick to look at an old bumper car from Pier 39 in San Francisco.
05:51Where did you get this thing?
05:52This came from a guy that cleared out his whole garage.
05:56It's from the late 40s, I think.
05:58When you hit somebody, then, I mean, they would fly around.
06:02I mean, you really hit somebody.
06:04I mean, you could hurt yourself.
06:05You'd literally fly out of the car.
06:07These were cool because they actually were driven by electricity.
06:10There was a steel plate on the floor.
06:11This pole came up.
06:12And then it completed its circuit when it touched the ceiling.
06:16Well, what would you suggest?
06:18Because I do want to drive it around like a golf cart.
06:21Yeah, like a golf cart.
06:22So there's enough room in the back to put a battery, you know, a couple batteries, electric motor.
06:26You turn the switch on.
06:27You step on the gas pedal.
06:29And off you go.
06:29So you're going to have to put wheels on it, though.
06:31I've got to get inside it and figure it out.
06:34I've got to figure out where we're putting the motor, where we're putting the battery, how we're wiring it.
06:38You're starting to scare me a little bit.
06:41What do you think it's going to cost me?
06:42Taking it apart is probably going to take six hours.
06:45It's fiberglass, so what's that mean?
06:46No sandblasting.
06:47Right.
06:48We have to actually hand-hand the whole thing out.
06:50That could take, you know, a day and a half, maybe two days blocking.
06:54There'll be some polishing and prepping going on.
06:56We may have four or five hours in that.
06:57And then we'll assemble it.
06:58But before we assemble it, we've got to engineer this motor thing.
07:02You're talking a lot of work.
07:04I mean, total restoration, I'm looking at $6,500.
07:10Wow.
07:11It's going to be the baddest ride in town, believe me.
07:14I would question anybody else but you, and so I say we have a deal.
07:19Awesome.
07:20Awesome.
07:21You keep an eye on that.
07:23It's going to kill you.
07:25Whoa!
07:26I'm anxious to see everything, but I want to see what it looks like with the wheels on it.
07:30Should have got that chair.
07:32You like that chair?
07:33Heck yeah.
07:33It's one of a kind.
07:38What are we doing to this thing, tearing it down?
07:40Yeah, did you talk with Rick about how far we're going into it?
07:43If we're tearing it down, I think we're tearing it down.
07:45All right.
07:47Well, that's a good start.
07:48Rick has Brett Lee and me tearing down this old bumper car.
07:51I like working more with Brett Lee.
07:52What he lacks in common sense, he makes up for with enthusiasm.
07:56Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
07:59Did Rick tell you what we're supposed to do with this rubber?
08:02Yeah, don't tear it up because we can't find them.
08:05You ready?
08:09Let's get these bolts off of here.
08:10Let's put the body off the chassis.
08:12All right.
08:12Hold it right there.
08:13Coming down, coming down.
08:15Coming in hot.
08:16Hey!
08:17It's just like a tire, right?
08:19It's all it is.
08:20One great big tire.
08:21You got to be kind of careful, man.
08:23We don't pop the inner tube inside here.
08:24There's an inner tube in there.
08:27That's getting there, man.
08:28Oh, man.
08:30Yeah!
08:31Finally!
08:33Yeah!
08:35Man, it looks like somebody had a really good time with a paintball gun.
08:38You know, it just took a lot of anger out.
08:39God, you idiot.
08:41Are you ready?
08:42Yeah, as long as this chain don't fly off and kill me, we're good.
08:46Whoa.
08:47Hey, Ed.
08:48I came today to Rick's Restoration to pick up my Farmall pedal tractor.
08:51You're not like pulling off the table.
08:52Wow!
08:52Damn!
08:53Damn!
08:54Oh!
09:01A customer recently dropped off a kid's Farmall tractor that looks like it's been sitting
09:06around for years.
09:07So Cowboy and Bratley are tearing it down bolt by bolt.
09:12Man, it looks like somebody had a really good time with a paintball gun.
09:15You know, it just took a lot of anger out.
09:17God, I'm an idiot.
09:21Put him in the box.
09:23Bratley loses more parts than a leper on a pogo stick.
09:26So I'm going to make sure he puts every single piece in a storage box where it belongs.
09:30Put him in the box.
09:31Put him in the box.
09:36In the box.
09:40Now come over here and just hold this thing.
09:42Can you do that?
09:43It's not stressing the shop.
09:44Because the nincompoops we've got to work with.
09:47Well, at least we get the job done.
09:49Yeah, it is.
09:50Oh, man.
09:51Put it in the box.
09:52Put it in the box.
09:53Put it in the bolt.
09:54In the box.
09:55That's why I said it in the box about 40 times.
09:57Dude, he's telling you one or nothing.
10:08It's the little details that are going to make this bumper car stand out.
10:12This seat is trashed.
10:14So Tyler and I are heading over to the upholsters to find the perfect seat fabric.
10:19So, Tyler, what's the deal with you and the gun thing?
10:21I mean, I didn't know you had a gun.
10:22Oh, my God.
10:23What's that all about?
10:24Relax.
10:24It's just a paintball gun.
10:26You shoot people with paintballs.
10:27That sounds stupid.
10:28No.
10:29There's, like, people set up courses and there's things you hide behind.
10:32And we should take the whole crew out paintballing.
10:34It'd be a great stress reliever.
10:36We don't have time right now to go and do that.
10:38I'm just telling you.
10:39It would boost company morale.
10:41It would boost morale?
10:42Yeah.
10:43Because then they wouldn't be so stressed out and then they would have a better workout.
10:46You know, I'll think about it.
10:48But right now, we've got a pull street to think about.
10:50Right?
10:51Yeah.
10:55Hey, Jesse.
10:55Hey, Rick.
10:56How's it going?
10:57Good.
10:57Got another project for you.
10:59This stuff's out of a bumper car.
11:02Jesse's done several projects for us in the past, from bicycle seats to a mechanical bull.
11:07I just hope he has something nice to go with our retro theme.
11:10What I'd like to do is I'd like to do tuck and roll on it.
11:13Okay.
11:13You know, this around being flat.
11:15Okay.
11:15And then inside here, tuck and roll.
11:17Okay.
11:17I think probably a three or four inch roll would be good.
11:20Okay.
11:22Tuck and roll is a lost art.
11:24Instead of flat upholstery, they give it that real nice plush look.
11:28It's going to look like it was right out of the 50s.
11:30And it's quite a big, long process to get each one of those pleats tucked.
11:35Stepping up the little details like this are the difference between somebody liking restoration
11:40or absolutely loving it.
11:42So it's worth every penny.
11:53Now that we're finished with all the body work on the kids' farmall tractor that we're restoring,
11:58we're going to spray it with a few coats of fire engine red paint.
12:01From the 40s through the 60s, this shade of red was definitely the hottest color out there for kids' toys.
12:08Once all the paint dries, Ted's going to go over all the dimensions on the decals
12:12and recreate all the artwork from scratch.
12:14His attention to detail is amazing.
12:17And I can't wait to see how it looks when he's done.
12:27We've been restoring a 1950s bumper car, and the customer wants it to run on its own power like a
12:33golf cart.
12:34So the trickiest part of this restoration is converting it into a self-propelled vehicle.
12:39Dave has been working on fabricating a new steering column,
12:42and I brought in an expert named Crazy Steve to build a self-contained motor to get this thing running.
12:47Normally, the bumper car would run off of a stinger pole, usually around 220 volts,
12:52but we don't have that power source, so I have to incorporate a closed unit under the shell of the
12:58bumper car.
12:59How fast do you think this thing's going to go once it's all together?
13:02I'm just guessing from 7 to 10.
13:047 to 10 miles an hour?
13:05Yeah, possibly more.
13:06I want to hear more.
13:08It makes things really scary.
13:09I fashioned a 12-volt battery and a 12-volt starter motor,
13:12and hopefully when they hit the pedal, she's going to go.
13:15Can we re-gear it? Can I go faster, like 20?
13:18I don't think you really want to go as fast as it's got no brakes.
13:22Who needs brakes, man?
13:25So, we're going to run our chain.
13:29Put that bad boy there.
13:31Got it.
13:31I fashioned this particular part to keep the back of the motor from torque twisting.
13:36Oh, look at that.
13:37Because these motors, as you know, they're pretty powerful.
13:39They've got a lot of torque.
13:41That battery over there will fit perfectly in here.
13:46Nice.
13:47Tighten all these bolts up.
13:50Run the cords, and we'll give it a test for her.
13:52That's what I'm talking about.
13:53Are you ready?
13:54Yeah, as long as this chain don't fly off and kill me, we're good.
13:57We're good.
14:08Smoky bone out.
14:09We almost put a hole in the table.
14:15We're barreling down the home stretch of this kid's tractor restoration.
14:19So now all we've got to do is assemble all the parts,
14:21and hopefully we knock his socks off when he sees it.
14:32Hey, Ed.
14:33Hey, Rick.
14:34How you doing?
14:34Good.
14:35How you been?
14:35Good.
14:36I came today to Rick's restoration to pick up my Farmall pedal tractor.
14:39You excited?
14:39I'm excited.
14:40Okay.
14:40Definitely want to see this thing.
14:41All right.
14:41Come on.
14:42Let's go over here.
14:42All right.
14:42Let's go.
14:43I'm kind of worried and kind of hoping that it comes out okay,
14:45because it wasn't the best shape.
14:48I mean, I can't wait to show you this thing.
14:50It looks a lot different.
14:51Okay.
14:52Here we go.
14:53Ready?
14:53Yeah.
14:53Go ahead.
14:54Go ahead.
14:55Whoa.
14:55There you go.
14:56Wow.
14:56Damn.
14:58What do you think?
14:59Check it out.
14:59That is phenomenal.
15:00Wow.
15:01You like that?
15:01Damn.
15:02I think it looks good.
15:04It was unbelievable.
15:05I think it was phenomenal.
15:06I mean, the color, the pop.
15:08If I didn't know it myself, I would think it's something different.
15:09It looks so good.
15:10It looks brand new.
15:11After we got all the paintball juice off of it,
15:14we stripped it all down,
15:16and we did a lot of body work,
15:17meaning filled it all in so there's no pits and everything.
15:21So we got it a lot smoother on there.
15:23It looks great.
15:24It looks pitchy.
15:24The color is the red.
15:27Pow, man.
15:27It just, like, nails you.
15:28It does.
15:29We got all these decals put back on originally the way they were.
15:32That decal on the front really sets it off.
15:34All right.
15:34And then the International Harvester decal on the front.
15:37Stuck out.
15:37Yeah.
15:38Very nice.
15:39Came out really well.
15:41If you remember, the hubcaps were deteriorated out.
15:44So we ended up getting those all polished out and everything,
15:47and then redid all your wheels, basically, you know, painted the wheels.
15:50Came out great.
15:51Pretty hot, huh?
15:52Yeah, it is.
15:52And then, of course, the seat, we ended up taking and putting the picture on there.
15:57That looks great.
15:57And we cleared it over and over and over and rubbed it all out.
16:00So now it's all in there.
16:01You can sit on it all day long, and it won't hurt anybody.
16:03That looks great.
16:04It just sets the tractor off having that seat like it is.
16:06It's a generational thing.
16:08It's a legacy, and I can't wait to have my family see it.
16:12Well, I appreciate it, man.
16:13It looks great.
16:14And I really appreciate you guys doing it.
16:15Thanks a lot.
16:15You bet.
16:16I appreciate it, Tyler.
16:16Thank you very much, guys.
16:17Thanks.
16:17This is great.
16:18All right.
16:18My family's going to love it.
16:20Okay.
16:20Let's go in the office.
16:21We'll take care of the rest of the paperwork.
16:22Ty, just get it all ready to go, okay?
16:24Just wrap it up, all right?
16:25So we're going to test it, right?
16:26No.
16:27Just get it ready to go.
16:28We made the seat super sturdy for that reason.
16:32God, I wish I could ride this.
16:36We've been restoring and customizing an amusement park bumper car for a friend of mine.
16:40Where the hell to go?
16:42Friendly!
16:43If you're going sleeveless, I'm going sleeveless.
16:47You okay?
16:48Okay, that's a bad decision.
16:52Catch you, you son of a bitch!
17:04We've been restoring and customizing an amusement park bumper car for a friend of mine.
17:09Not only did we make it look pretty, we installed a battery-powered motor so you can drive this
17:14little hot rod out of the rink and around the block.
17:16I didn't spare any expense on this project, so I really hope his jaw hits the ground when
17:21he sees this.
17:24Hey, Rick!
17:26Hey!
17:27Jim!
17:29How are you, buddy?
17:29How you been, guys?
17:30Good!
17:30I came here today to Rick's restoration to pick up my Pier 39 bumper car.
17:36So you're excited about it?
17:38So you're excited about it?
17:39Okay.
17:39Come on over here.
17:40It's over here.
17:40It was just a shell when Rick picked it up.
17:43I'm anxious to see what it looks like and how it's running, if it is running.
17:48Where the hell to go?
17:50Where the hell to go?
17:51Brett Lee!
17:52It was just here.
17:57Here he comes.
17:58Oh, my God.
18:01Wow.
18:03Oh, man.
18:06Jeez.
18:06Where you been?
18:07You know I had to test it out.
18:08Oh, man.
18:10What do you think?
18:11Oh, that is cool.
18:13When Brett Lee came around the corner and I first saw it, I was just blown away.
18:18I couldn't believe it looked like that.
18:21I was a happy camper, believe me.
18:23Thanks, Brett Lee.
18:24All right.
18:25You better left than ever.
18:28I couldn't imagine it would look like this.
18:31It looks like a Ferrari.
18:33I mean, it's unbelievable.
18:36Every time we do something new and different, I try to take the guys and we go one more
18:41step further.
18:42On the body, it was a rough cast.
18:44So we ended up sanding it all out, smoothing it all, putting a good coat of primer on there
18:48and then put clear on and buffed it all out so it looks like a car.
18:52Beautiful.
18:53All the original emblem on here, all the grill's been redone.
18:56Everything that was gold plated or gold anodized, we ended up chrome plating.
19:00Wow.
19:01We did a real nice leather job with this tuck and roll.
19:04A little more classy look than just a piece of vinyl.
19:06I mean, it's just unbelievable the work you did.
19:10To put the final touch on it, we went and did this pole on there.
19:14That you've got to have.
19:15Yeah, otherwise the car's not the same without that stick on the end.
19:20You know what you need to do?
19:21What's that?
19:22You need to take it for a spin.
19:23Well, I'm ready.
19:24Get in.
19:25That's what I'm going to do right now.
19:27Whoa.
19:27When I sat in the seat, it's more comfortable than my Mercedes.
19:34Hold on! Hold on, Jim!
19:41I was a little surprised it went that fast, but it was a great ride.
19:45I had a great time, and I'm going to have some more good times in it, too.
19:51That baby moves!
19:52That brings back your youth for a while!
19:54Oh, I'm telling you, it's just beautiful.
19:58Thank you very much.
19:59Yeah, it was great.
20:00You did a beautiful job.
20:02Awesome.
20:03I'm happy.
20:04Happy, happy.
20:05Good.
20:05It just brought back memories.
20:08I really love that car.
20:19I brought my own gun.
20:20Does that intimidate you guys?
20:22The crew's been working like crazy on all these deadlines,
20:25so we're going to take a little break at a local paintball club
20:28to blow off some steam.
20:30So you're saying you're going like that?
20:32I'm going sleep.
20:32I'm not going to get hit.
20:33Wait, what?
20:34He's going like that?
20:34I'll go with no shirt on.
20:36If you're going sleeveless, I'm going sleeveless.
20:39Okay?
20:40Okay, that's a bad decision.
20:41Oh, God.
20:42Left side ready!
20:44You're dead!
20:45Right side ready!
20:46Ready!
20:47Go, go, go, go!
20:52Advanced.
20:53Help me, Brett, cover me.
20:56You better run and hide.
20:58Bad decision.
21:00Boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop.
21:01That orange suit Bradley had on was an easy target.
21:04Oh!
21:05I got you, you son of a bitch!
21:08Oh!
21:11Thanks, John.
21:13Oh, .
21:18All right, I'm out!
21:20Blue team, yup!
21:21Cease fire!
21:23I took one right to the nipple.
21:24Keep your eye on the ball, Tyler.
21:30You're going to wear long sleeves next time there, buddy?
21:32Maybe.
21:33I guess this is a good day of work.
21:34Nice, because we're not in the shop.
21:36Bad, because the whole left side of my body hurts.
21:39What's this look like under here?
21:40That's what I want to know.
21:41That looks like a nasty hickey.
21:44I'm in serious pain right now.
21:46I got a really bad one right there.
21:48It hurts.
21:49This was an awesome day for Rick's Restorations.
21:52We're going to go to work tomorrow all fresh
21:54and ready to just pound out some metal.
21:56Blue team!
21:56Whoo!
21:57Whoo!
21:58Whoo!
