00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02This is cool.
00:03This is a Philco predicted.
00:05It's one of the rarest television sets in the world.
00:07So what I'd like to do is to modernize it.
00:10A lot of times I don't like doing that.
00:11Right.
00:11But sometimes it's sort of fun.
00:13That's an antique towel steamer from the late 1800s.
00:16I don't even know how they worked.
00:18It had to have gotten hot somehow.
00:20We want you guys to make a TV commercial about Rick's
00:23restorations.
00:24As long as we get full creative freedom.
00:28Look at a man's workbench.
00:31You see his passions.
00:34His work's in progress.
00:37The things that drive him crazy.
00:42Projects that?
00:43You get the point.
00:45Anyway, every workbench tells a story.
00:48And this is ours.
00:50American Restoration.
00:57I'm all about old school.
00:59But sometimes we get to put a modern twist on old items.
01:02And those projects always pose unique challenges.
01:05Plus, they're super fun.
01:07Rick.
01:08Yeah.
01:09Customers here with an old TV.
01:10Oh, hey.
01:11Sit right there.
01:12All right.
01:13You got it?
01:14Hey.
01:15I'm Rick.
01:15Good to meet you.
01:16This is cool.
01:17This is a Philco predicted.
01:19It's one of the rarest television sets in the world.
01:21It was also known as a Danish modern.
01:23I'm here at Rick's Restoration today to get my Philco predicted TV restored.
01:27This was futuristic in its day.
01:29Yeah.
01:29You know that, right?
01:30It was a big deal.
01:30Yeah, it was a big one.
01:31Yeah, I used to call it the rocket.
01:33The rocket.
01:33Yeah, yeah.
01:34Because they looked like a rocket.
01:35So the way this would usually sit, I mean, this would sit up here like this.
01:39Right.
01:40Just like that.
01:41And then the whole family would watch TV from there.
01:44You know?
01:44This predicted TV is bringing back some memories of television back in the day.
01:48Instead of cable or satellite, TVs had rabbit ear antennas.
01:52There were only a handful of channels to watch and remote controls were still laboratory equipment.
01:57It also brought one of the original ads here for Philco.
02:01Very cool.
02:02I see stuff like this and think about commercials that were on TV.
02:06All these real cool little cartoon ads.
02:09I mean, this brings back such cool memories.
02:10That's a question I had is about how much this was back in the day.
02:13I knew it was for wealthier people.
02:15And this one here is 259.
02:18You can figure back in 58, that's an expensive piece of equipment.
02:21So do you collect?
02:22Yeah, I do.
02:23I do collect them.
02:24Yeah.
02:25The reason why I really want to get this restored is after 40 years, I finally got the chance to
02:29be in business with my father.
02:30That's awesome.
02:31We started a TV technology company, which takes television and makes it interactive.
02:36So what I'd like to do is take this old, rare TV and modernize it.
02:40It's really, we're just going to be showing a corporate reel on it.
02:43Okay.
02:43What do you want to do?
02:44So I like the outside restored to original condition, but the inside put, you know, an LCD HD panel TV
02:50in it.
02:51So it would actually be color and it would actually work.
02:54But I really want to see the look on my dad's face when he's surprised.
02:57Oh, so this is a surprise.
02:58It sounds like you want to morph it a little bit.
03:00Yeah, absolutely.
03:01I want to modernize it.
03:02Yeah.
03:02A lot of times I don't like doing that.
03:04Right.
03:04But sometimes it's sort of fun.
03:05I hate to make it not original, but you know, this is for the office and absolutely, let's do it.
03:09Right.
03:09What I'll do is we'll pull everything out, redo the cabinet, redo the knobs, redo the face, and then we'll
03:16take the TV tube out.
03:18We'll go ahead and get us a flat screen that fits in here, right?
03:20Sounds perfect.
03:21The question is, what will it cost?
03:23Yeah.
03:24Um, I'm looking probably $2,500 to do the whole thing.
03:27Wow.
03:28Make it a brand new TV again.
03:29Okay.
03:30This is going to mean so much to my father to be able to have this, you know.
03:33It's going to be a great showpiece for our office.
03:36I tell you what, let's make it the future of television.
03:39Awesome.
03:39Awesome.
03:40I love what you're doing.
03:41I love it.
03:42All right, let's go in the office.
03:43Okay.
03:43We'll write this stuff up, and then I'll get this thing started.
03:45My dad has no idea that I bought this television set, and I really can't wait to see his face
03:50when
03:50he sees how it's been modernized.
04:00Rick, you got a customer here for you.
04:02Hey.
04:02Yeah, just set it right there, Kyle.
04:04Thanks, bud.
04:05You got it.
04:06Hey.
04:06This is awesome.
04:07I'm Rick.
04:07I'm Dan.
04:08Good to meet you, Dan.
04:09Man, this thing's cool.
04:10That's an antique towel steamer from the late 1800s.
04:13I own a barber shop, and I want to get it restored to utilize in my barber shop.
04:18They just basically heated up the towel.
04:20That's it.
04:20So when you were in the barber's chair, and you're laying down, the barber would take this
04:24nice hot towel and set it on your face, and what it did was open your pores and got your
04:28beard soft so it's ready to start shaving your face.
04:31He's not going to cut your throat, right?
04:33That's it.
04:33So you do shaves.
04:34I do.
04:35Oh.
04:36Barbershops used to do shave and haircuts.
04:38Right.
04:38The deal is, is after World War I, shaving and barber shops declined because of the invention
04:43of the disposable razor.
04:45That's it.
04:45So all of a sudden it started slowing down, and then they just started gearing themselves
04:48towards, um, haircuts.
04:51Now I think it's more of the nostalgic thing to go in and get a real shave and a nice
04:58haircut
04:58in an old chair.
04:59So this kind of stuff's really, really taken off right now, right?
05:02Yes, it has.
05:02In your industry?
05:03Yeah.
05:03We've restored a bunch of barbershop items, but I've never done one of these before.
05:07I love the look of it.
05:09And it takes you back to the golden age of barbershops, where a man can go to clean up,
05:13hang out, and just relax.
05:15You want to make it work.
05:16That's the, that's the thought.
05:17I don't even know how they worked.
05:19It had to have gotten hot somehow, either gas?
05:22I was told it was a gas line that fed it.
05:24Okay, so it went up, you think the gas line's right through the center and that's why we
05:26can't see it?
05:27That's it.
05:28I'm told you'd stack the dry towels in here or roll them up.
05:31Okay.
05:32And it'd create the steam, keep it closed up, heat it up, and when you're ready to
05:35use them, you take them out and use them.
05:37Right, right.
05:37Yeah, it's got like a plate in the bottom, so that steam was coming up through there.
05:40This is cool to have it be in there.
05:42Yeah.
05:42Because you would think it'd be gone.
05:43That's right.
05:43So the thing's barely complete.
05:45It looks like this was copper.
05:47To me, I can't really tell.
05:48Yeah.
05:48But I'll be able to tell when I pull it off.
05:50So this would all be basically copper all the way to here, and then this is going to be
05:53white down here.
05:54Sounds good.
05:55So, Rick, what's it going to cost to get this thing restored?
05:59I'm working.
06:00I'm looking at $3,800 to do the whole thing.
06:07Okay.
06:08Sounds good.
06:09All right.
06:09We're going.
06:10All right.
06:10Cool.
06:11Awesome.
06:11Let's go in the office, we'll do some paperwork, and then I'll get started.
06:14All right.
06:15$3,800 was a little bit higher than I had anticipated on spending.
06:19But for that, I'm hoping that it works, and it really has a wow factor to it.
06:30Hey guys.
06:31Yeah.
06:31We need to talk to you about something on the Predicta TV.
06:34What's up?
06:35Well, we want you guys to make a TV commercial about Rick's restorations.
06:39Ever since the client told me that he wants to play corporate videos on the Predicta TV, I've known that
06:44I've got to show him how it works by playing something on it.
06:47Then we came up with the idea of making our own commercial.
06:50It kind of kills two birds with one stone.
06:52Wouldn't that be cute?
06:53Do we have a budget for this?
06:55I mean, if we're making a commercial, we've got to make it good, right?
06:57There's no budget.
06:58There's no such thing as a budget.
07:00I don't know how they expect us to make a TV commercial with no budget.
07:03I mean, does Rick restore stuff with no budget?
07:05I don't get it.
07:06As long as we get full creative freedom, you're not trying to tell us how to do it.
07:10Yeah, that sounds good.
07:11Because what's the point of that?
07:12Then it's like you making it.
07:13I like to be the creative one around here.
07:15But if we want to get this done on the cheap, we've got to give something up.
07:19I'll let them do what they want, but I'm praying they don't embarrass me.
07:22You know, represent, bottom line.
07:24Represent Rick's Restorations in whatever creative way that you want to.
07:27I'm up for that.
07:28That'll be great.
07:29Okay?
07:29Go ahead and finish this out.
07:30Then you guys can just think about it.
07:32Bounce some ideas around.
07:33All right.
07:35Dude, I got the best idea for this one.
07:39We totally got Steve.
07:41Kyle and I have to figure out how this 1800s towel steamer works.
07:45Oh!
07:46Mother .
07:47That was hot.
07:49One, two, three.
07:51Whoa!
08:01We recently got in a 1958 Predicta TV that we're modernizing.
08:05We're not trying to change the outside appearance on this TV.
08:08So I got Robert refinishing the wood base just like it was back in the day.
08:12While he's doing that, it's time to customize the inside.
08:15I've taken an HD flat screen and put a mask on it so it'll look right in the Predicta picture
08:20tube.
08:20But we got to figure out how to mount it.
08:22Hey, Kyle.
08:23Hey, Rick.
08:25All right.
08:25I just got this flat screen that's going to go in the Predicta TV.
08:29We got to figure out how to mount it.
08:30What I thought about doing was make a bracket here to where this fits here.
08:35So you go like this.
08:37Okay.
08:38It's always challenging making something old work with new technology.
08:42So fitting the new screen into the old housing and making sure that it doesn't fall back has to be
08:48my main focus right now.
08:49Now what I need you to do is have Dave make a flat plate out of aluminum, and then you'll
08:54drill a hole through the end.
08:55You'll weld a nut on the back to where when you screw it in, it tightens into this bracket.
09:00Size it to this on the width from right here to right there.
09:04This will be the flat bracket.
09:06It'll V in here, go straight down, mount there, and mount there.
09:10That'll give you all the support you need for the whole TV.
09:12Okay.
09:13Okay.
09:13All right.
09:15If I have any questions, I'll holler.
09:16Okay, bud.
09:20Earlier, we got a really cool piece of barbershop history into the shop, a late 1800s towel steamer.
09:26It's all rounded, so banging it out and polishing all the dents has not been easy.
09:30But step by step, we're bringing this thing back to life.
09:33Some of the high shine polish is really starting to pop, and I hope the customer is going to be
09:38thrilled with a new look at this thing.
09:40How's it going?
09:42Good.
09:43Kyle and I have to figure out how this 1800s towel steamer works.
09:47Problem is, there aren't any directions, and there were no parts.
09:50So we're hooking up a mini propane tank and a garden hose and hoping for the best.
09:55I believe you have to open this valve, let the water in.
09:57We'll open that valve and let the air out until the water comes out.
10:00And we can let the water rise to the top.
10:02Okay.
10:03All right, that's on.
10:04That's off.
10:04Now let it go.
10:05Go ahead.
10:07Damn it, T.
10:08Love that, bud.
10:09What?
10:11You're lucky that wasn't hot water.
10:13It's heating it from the bottom, and then that's heating this water?
10:16Heating the water in the tank, and it's heating this water up here through those lines that are going through
10:20the bottom.
10:21So the steam just basically comes out of there, right?
10:23Yeah, it's just going to come up into the head.
10:25Totally got steam.
10:26Oh!
10:28Mother !
10:29That was hot!
10:31Ow!
10:32That one was really hot!
10:34I think she works.
10:36That was hot.
10:37That's what you get for shooting me in the balls.
10:39Yeah, but that was cold.
10:41You can deal with that hot .
10:43This thing heats up so good, we got to boil on the first try.
10:46Rick's really going to be happy, but Tyler's feeling a little burnt.
10:55What the hell is the record button?
10:57What's up, Bratley?
10:58We're ready to go.
10:59You got the camera ready and all that?
11:00Yep.
11:01Earlier, my dad asked Bratley and I to make a Rick's Restorations commercial.
11:04We may not be filmmakers, but we definitely have the talent to make this thing a winner.
11:09Ron.
11:09What?
11:10We're making a commercial.
11:11A commercial?
11:12A commercial.
11:13So tell me, what's your favorite part of working at Rick's is?
11:15Being on the road, finding good old crap, bringing it back, selling it, living life.
11:22That's good.
11:23That's what we needed.
11:24Deuces out, hang loose, be good, love life.
11:29Jackasses.
11:30Ron slayed it.
11:31I think this commercial is going to be a piece of cake, and who knows?
11:34This could be the start of something big for me and Tyler.
11:37Kyle, we got some questions.
11:39Kyle, we're making a commercial.
11:41We need big energy and tell the camera how much you love working here.
11:46I love working here at Rick's Restorations because I get paid on Fridays and I work on cool stuff.
11:51Something like that.
11:52I love working here at Rick's Restorations.
11:57Nice!
11:58We'll work on it.
11:59Thanks, Kyle.
12:00Why'd you guys get to work?
12:01So we're having issues with some of the talent today.
12:03But we have a big staff, so we're going to keep pushing forward.
12:07I mean, it can only get better, right?
12:09Cowboy!
12:10Why?
12:11We're making a commercial.
12:12Well, I don't want to be in it.
12:14I gotta have people around the shop talking about why they like it here at Rick's.
12:17Well, you're talking the wrong one.
12:19Why do you like it here at Rick's?
12:21Look right here for a second.
12:22It sucks working here at Rick's. How's that?
12:24No, you can't do that.
12:25I need a raise.
12:26You gotta love working here.
12:27I like lunch and leaving work.
12:29It's only part.
12:32All right.
12:33We gotta think of a plan B.
12:34That was horrible.
12:35I got this.
12:36I got an idea.
12:44Hey, Rick.
12:44Yeah?
12:45Dan's here for the vulcanizing.
12:47Hey!
12:47How you been, Dan?
12:47All is good.
12:48Good to see you.
12:49Good to see you.
12:50So what's been going on?
12:51Still cutting hair.
12:52I'm glad you are because this piece is the sickest looking thing I've ever seen.
12:57Cool.
12:57I can't wait to see it.
12:58Yeah, I can't wait to show it to you.
12:59Come on.
12:59It's back here.
13:00Can I come too?
13:01Yeah, come on.
13:02This thing's awesome.
13:04When I brought this in to Rick's, it was in really bad shape.
13:06It had some dents in it.
13:08It wasn't working and it had some really bad copper tarnish on it.
13:12All right.
13:13Here we go.
13:14One.
13:15Two.
13:16Three.
13:17Oh!
13:20Whoa!
13:22Holy night!
13:24When I first saw the vulcanizer, I was astounded.
13:27That thing just shines.
13:28That is beautiful.
13:30It's unbelievable that this is the same machine.
13:32I just remember a lot of dents all over this.
13:35We had to get up inside of it and then pound the dents out.
13:38Get it all out and then found out this was copper.
13:41This is copper.
13:42This is copper.
13:43The underneath, solid piece of copper.
13:46Wow.
13:46So this whole thing, it's basically like it was back in the day.
13:49I'm thinking this looks trophy material.
13:52It's beautiful.
13:53All right, Dan, you ready to see this thing work?
13:54Ever since I dropped it off, I'm ready to see it work.
13:57It would have ran natural gas, which you can run.
14:00Okay.
14:00Right now, we stuck some propane in here.
14:01So now all I got to do is turn that valve in the back.
14:04I light it.
14:04Boom.
14:05And then it's hot like that.
14:06Whoa.
14:07It's cool, huh?
14:08Very.
14:09Let's check it out.
14:11Oh, yeah.
14:12Oh, yeah.
14:13All right, so reach in there and grab one.
14:15See if they're right.
14:16All right.
14:17Oh, yeah.
14:18Ready to go?
14:19Ready to go?
14:20Heck yeah.
14:20I'm glad it works and I'm glad you like it.
14:22Oh, I love it.
14:23I love it.
14:24Awesome.
14:24Hey, dude.
14:25None of it works.
14:26All right.
14:27Dan, you're a barber.
14:28Sir?
14:29I am a man that's been working really hard a lot of hours.
14:32Nice hot towel.
14:33Nice bearded face.
14:35Can you give me a shave?
14:36I think it's time.
14:37Let's get it on.
14:38All right.
14:38We'll just take one of the barber's chairs right there off the lot.
14:41All right.
14:41Sounds good.
14:42All week, I've been seeing this hot towel steamer and I've been waiting to get a straight razor
14:46shave from a professional barber.
14:48Oh, yeah.
14:49Here we go.
14:52Ready?
14:54Sorry about that.
14:56Did you get me?
14:57Am I bleeding?
14:59I'm bleeding.
15:00Dude.
15:00What the?
15:00Dude.
15:01Gotcha.
15:02Big blood.
15:04No razor.
15:05What are you doing?
15:06I'm like, holy crap.
15:09That was just wrong.
15:11That was just wrong.
15:13Good job, Dan.
15:15Dan, you're in on this too?
15:16Just a little.
15:17Oh.
15:18It was pricey.
15:19It was useless to see Rick's reaction to what I did to Ron's face.
15:23All right.
15:23All joking aside, I love it.
15:25I love you.
15:26You've done an incredible job.
15:27Thank you again, Rick.
15:28You bet.
15:28Anytime.
15:29Thank you, man.
15:30All right.
15:30Let's go in the office.
15:31We'll take care of this.
15:31All right.
15:32Then I'll beat my brother.
15:35When you're restoring old wood items, sometimes you have to replace some of the original parts.
15:41But matching the look of the old wood can be a little tricky.
15:44What household items can you use to give your wood a nice weathered look?
15:59The answer and more coming up next.
16:06What household items can you use to give your wood a nice weathered look?
16:11The correct answer is D, white vinegar and steel wool.
16:14By soaking the steel wool in vinegar overnight, you can make a simple stain that gives your
16:20wood a nice aged patina.
16:22The longer you let it sit, the darker your stain's gonna be.
16:25So what you do is apply the mixture to the wood with a brush.
16:29Before you know it, your piece will look like it's 20 years old.
16:32For an even more aged look, you can score it with a screw or hit it with a hammer.
16:38This Predicta TV has been a blast working on it.
16:41We're coming down to the home stretch on it.
16:42And I have Robert installing all the electronics in the wood cabinet.
16:46Once that's done, we've got to get it all together,
16:48because the customer's gonna be here any minute now.
16:52Rick, Chris and his dad's here.
16:54Oh, hey, Chris.
16:55Good to see you, Rick.
16:56Good to see you.
16:56I'd like to introduce you to my dad, Cary.
16:58Cary, good to meet you.
16:59Nice to meet you.
17:00As you remember, last time I was here,
17:01what I dropped off was a surprise for your store for my dad.
17:04Yeah, well, I'm hoping it's gonna be a big surprise for you,
17:07and I hope you love it.
17:08So are you ready to go see it?
17:09I'm excited.
17:10This is gonna be cool.
17:11This is gonna be really cool.
17:12Come on, it's over here.
17:13I wanted to get the television restored for my dad,
17:15because we started a TV technology company together.
17:18And it's really a testament to a father-son relationship and a business.
17:22So, Cary, do you have any idea what it is?
17:24I have no idea what's behind there.
17:26Okay.
17:27Here we go.
17:28One, two, three.
17:32Holy smokes.
17:34Check that out.
17:35I can't believe it.
17:37That is fantastic.
17:39That's awesome.
17:40When I first saw the predictive TV, I was just absolutely blown away.
17:43I gotta tell you, Rick just did a fantastic job.
17:46It looked better than new.
17:47We've watched science fiction television since the 1950s.
17:51Right.
17:51It's great to have a memory like this brought back to life.
17:54Yeah.
17:55I'm just amazed that you found one that you could restore.
17:59Oh, it was rough.
17:59I bet you it was not much to it.
18:01It was broke.
18:02It didn't work.
18:03There was nothing on it that didn't get touched, bottom line.
18:06When you brought it in, the wood was, it looked like it was painted, to be quite honest.
18:10Robert had to strip it, sand it all down, and he went and stained all that, and then clear-coated
18:15it.
18:16And then on the front cloth, this has all been redone.
18:19We found the same matching cloth, which was pretty cool.
18:22I was worried that we weren't gonna find that.
18:24This is gorgeous and a beautiful restoration job.
18:26I'm thrilled.
18:27Thanks.
18:28What he wanted it to do was show videos, and the only way to do that was to convert it
18:32over to, like, a flat screen on the inside,
18:35so where you could actually see it.
18:36So we went and made a piece on the inside that's actually round, going around the corners,
18:42so the flat screen, when you look at it, it's gonna look like it did back in the day.
18:46Oh, that's fabulous.
18:47And it's all incorporated in it to where you don't really see it.
18:51You know, like, if you stand back, it still looks like an old predictor.
18:55Uh-huh.
18:55That's awesome.
18:57And then the bottom end of it, it had to be converted to where no longer was it tubes or
19:01anything like that.
19:02It has to function a little bit newer, basically.
19:05I mounted the DVD down in here.
19:07In order to get it in and out, I didn't want to yet have to undo the back,
19:10so we just cut the cloth just a little bit, glued it up inside there so you really can't see
19:14it.
19:14It's all interactive.
19:15That was what we were trying to shoot for also.
19:17This was a perfect surprise.
19:19You know, I really didn't expect this, and I really want to thank you for it, and you too, Rick.
19:24This has made a lot of dreams come true.
19:27This will be great in our business.
19:28All right.
19:29Awesome.
19:29That's perfect.
19:30That means I did a little bit of my job.
19:32You want to see it play?
19:33Yeah.
19:34Wow.
19:35Okay.
19:35Now I got a surprise for you.
19:37Tyler!
19:37Bradley!
19:38Sometimes my bright ideas come back to bite me in the ass.
19:42I had the boys do a commercial to show that the TV works.
19:45I haven't seen it yet, and I'm just hoping they don't embarrass me.
19:49You ready?
19:50I'm ready.
19:51Oh, darn.
19:52My grandpa's cooler's too old and rusty to keep.
19:56Now all the memories it brought will be gone forever.
