00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02You guys got something for me?
00:03We do.
00:04I have a cannon.
00:04Check this thing out.
00:06Can you make it work?
00:07Um, I've never done a cannon before.
00:10The silver slipper is very iconic, so this thing is awesome, awesome.
00:14I mean, does it work?
00:15Um, I guess it doesn't work.
00:18Okay, here we go.
00:19Oh, God.
00:20I'm very nervous about the cannon being shot off.
00:27Remember back in the day when things were made by hand and people took pride in their work?
00:33My name's Rick Dale, and I bring these things back to life.
00:38Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:42There's no owner's manual for what we do, but there's no job we can't handle.
00:59Today I have a guy coming in.
01:01He wants me to take a look at something he got from a casino that he might possibly want restored.
01:05Hey, how are you?
01:06Hi, Rick.
01:07I came down here to Rick's Restoration to have him take a look at the silver slipper slot machine I
01:11just purchased from a friend of mine.
01:13I paid $500 for the unit, so I'm hoping that it is worth restoring.
01:18Okay.
01:19Man, that's gold.
01:21Okay, well, the first thing about it is it's a Mills.
01:23It's a Mills slot machine.
01:24It's a 10-center.
01:25And Mills was American-made, and they started, like, in 1880.
01:28Oh, okay.
01:29I see.
01:29I mean, it's a pretty common machine, but what's really not common about it is the silver slipper.
01:33It was a hotel that was here starting about 1950, and all it was was a casino.
01:38You know, back in the 50s, there was mainly nothing but gambling in these little casinos.
01:42Well, it ended up about 1988, the silver slipper was demolished.
01:45So this thing is very iconic.
01:47It's something that's gone by.
01:48It's gone.
01:49Everything nowadays has got computer chips and stuff like that.
01:51This thing here is fully mechanical.
01:53I mean, it's definitely a cool machine.
01:55Being in Las Vegas, we certainly see our fair share of slot machines, but anytime we come
01:59across one that has some historical significance, it makes it that much more special.
02:04So, have you tried using this?
02:05I mean, does it work?
02:06I just loaded it up in the car, and I came over here.
02:08If you got a dime...
02:10Yeah.
02:10I got one.
02:12Okay.
02:16I guess it doesn't work.
02:19No, it doesn't work.
02:20So what would we do to restore it?
02:22I mean, what would your advice be on this?
02:23When a customer comes in and they're not quite sure if they want to get their item restored
02:27or not, it's tough to give an estimate.
02:29I have to be honest with how much work it's going to need and realistic with the cost,
02:32but I don't want to scare them away.
02:34So, the mech's going to need to be gone through.
02:36The handle here, we'd have to re-chrome this.
02:39Handle comes off, knob gets polished out.
02:41All of it painted and polished on the outside, and we'll redo all this glass.
02:45It'll look brand spanking new.
02:46What do we think it's going to be?
02:48Well, in order to do the whole thing, get the inside totally redone,
02:52we're looking right around $3,200 to $3,500 to restore one.
02:56Sheesh.
02:57That's more than I thought.
02:59Yeah.
03:00I was a little shocked on the price.
03:02It was more than I anticipated.
03:04I guess there's a lot more that goes into it than just painting it and putting some oil on it
03:08and bending some parts.
03:09So what do you think?
03:10You want to do it?
03:11Yeah.
03:15Yep, I'll go for it.
03:16Alright, awesome.
03:17Alright, thanks a lot, Rick.
03:18It'll be great.
03:19I think you're going to love it.
03:19I know this is a lot of money, and I don't think the customer was expecting it,
03:23so I really got to make sure this thing blows him away.
03:34Good morning.
03:35Hey, good morning.
03:36We just got in this old slot machine.
03:38Now, Brentley and I are going to tear it apart.
03:45What is the release button?
03:47Yeah!
03:49Jackpot!
03:49That's how we do it.
03:50It's a silver slipper.
04:02Hey, how are you?
04:03Good, how are you?
04:04I'm Rick.
04:05I'm Shane.
04:06Kendra.
04:06Kendra, great to meet you.
04:08You guys got something for me?
04:09We do.
04:09What you got?
04:10I have a cannon.
04:11A cannon?
04:12A cannon.
04:14Oh, my God.
04:15Check this thing out.
04:16We came to Rick's restoration to get our cannon restored.
04:19This thing is very heavy.
04:21It's been in our family for at least 40 years, and I think it's from the Civil War.
04:28Geez, I need to eat my Wheaties.
04:30So, what's the deal with this thing?
04:32It's been in our family for a long time.
04:34On every holiday, we'd shoot it off.
04:36You'd shoot it?
04:37Well, make a big bang.
04:39Really?
04:40Sounds like fun.
04:41When was the last time you fired it?
04:43Probably 20, 25 years ago.
04:46Wow.
04:47Yes.
04:47The inside's really, really rusted out.
04:50Well, at one point, I know there was a beehive in there.
04:54Do you have any history on this?
04:55We looked.
04:56I can't find anything.
04:57Where was this thing at?
04:58It was upstate New York in Ithaca, New York.
05:00This being from back there?
05:02I mean, this could have been used in the Civil War.
05:04Do you think it was?
05:05It could have been.
05:05It's possible.
05:06It's possible.
05:07If this was Civil War, I mean, that's some huge amount of history.
05:10I've never even been next to a cannon, let alone asked to restore one.
05:14This thing is in rough, rough shape, but it seems to have a really deep connection to these guys.
05:20How do you guys see this being done up?
05:22We want it functioning, because we want it...
05:24Well, scare our kids.
05:25Scare our kids.
05:27What's it going to cost us?
05:30Um, it's going to take some time.
05:31These wheels are way, way, way messed up.
05:34I mean, that is one rusted mess.
05:36I'm going to have to heat these things up to try to get them things unbusted out.
05:39The next biggest one is this wood.
05:41That stuff's rotted.
05:42I mean, wow.
05:44We're going to have to lay all this stuff out, figure out what's what,
05:46and we'll make this wood structure that holds the cannon.
05:49And once everything gets blasted, we'll prime it up, get them all painted black, get that painted black, and then
05:54I'll get somebody in to look at that and tell me if I'm going to kill myself if we pack
05:58it up and get it firing.
05:59The total deal is probably running between $1,800 and $2,500 to get the whole thing done, so...
06:10I think it's worth it to keep it in the family.
06:12Awesome, awesome, awesome!
06:14I can't wait to come back and hear that big bang again.
06:17It's going to remind me of my childhood.
06:20Thank you very much for bringing this thing in here.
06:21Let's go in the office, take care of some paperwork, and then we'll get that put in line and get
06:26started.
06:26Okay.
06:27All right?
06:29I can't help but stop by an antique shop that I've been dying to check out.
06:33Man, you've got a great place here.
06:35Yeah, we bring it in from all over the world.
06:37Ready for the silver slipper slot machine.
06:40Whoa!
06:41Woo!
06:42Unbelievable.
06:51Hey, are you Doc?
06:53Yeah, I am.
06:53Good to meet you, Doc.
06:54Good to meet you.
06:55Earlier, a customer brought in a rusty old cannon, which may have been from the Civil War era.
07:00So before we start putting this through the line, I called someone in that knows a lot more than me
07:05about cannons.
07:06Are you the doctor of cannons?
07:07I am.
07:08My name is Daniel Stanton, they call me Doc, and I've been working on cannons for 20-plus years.
07:14You know, we're restoring this piece, and I just need to know what you know about it, how we can
07:19fire it.
07:19Okay.
07:20And we want to make sure it's safe to fire.
07:22Okay.
07:23What do you think?
07:23What's it look like?
07:24Yeah, it's a carriage-operated cannon, obviously.
07:28It's got the wheels, and you've got the rest of the risers and stuff I see.
07:33From looking at it, it's all heavy cast.
07:36It looks like it's an inch and a half smoothbore.
07:41And yeah, these were used more in the 1800s.
07:44First part of Civil War.
07:46Wow.
07:47So you're saying this actually is from the Civil War?
07:50Yeah.
07:50The make of it, or the style of it?
07:52The make and style of it, because what they did is they took them off the ships.
07:57Wow.
07:58That's cool stuff.
07:59After looking at the cannon, it is from the Civil War era, mainly from ships back then.
08:05And they would bring them off to put them on the ground with a bigger carriage wheel to make them
08:08more mobile.
08:09Most of your war was fought with these.
08:11The North and South used them both.
08:13And these were normally called a Napoleon style because of the Napoleon complex.
08:19Shorter, big bang.
08:20Napoleon, all right.
08:21And the way they load these, they would take eight ounces of black powder, wad it up, put a steel
08:28ball on top of it.
08:29Okay.
08:30Put it all down there, shove it down in here.
08:32Okay.
08:32Then they would light the fuse and wait for it to go bang.
08:38Thank you very, very much for coming by.
08:40You bet.
08:41I'm so happy that I called Doc in to take a look at this.
08:44This is a true piece of American history, and I can't wait to let the customer know that this is
08:50actually from the Civil War.
08:57Earlier, a customer brought in a silver slipper slot machine.
09:00He wants to get restored.
09:01We tore it down.
09:02Now I got the guys fabricating and painting the pieces of the machine.
09:05For the front face, we're going to gloss black.
09:08For the side wood panels, we're going to dark stain.
09:10This thing is going to be badass.
09:19All right, so, Brantley, what are we doing?
09:20Well, I tried taking this apart.
09:22Want to heat them?
09:23Yep.
09:24Heat them.
09:25My dad is having me help Brantley with this cannon.
09:28We already had this thing sandblasted, and now we have to get these wheels apart as soon as possible.
09:32This is definitely the coolest thing I've ever worked on at the shop.
09:35I cannot wait to see this thing fire.
09:38I don't want to be anywhere near that.
09:41Hey!
09:42You're so strong!
09:44All right, we got all those nuts off.
09:46Now we got to get the actual wheels off.
09:48You ready?
09:49Here we go.
09:50Whoa!
09:51Look at that!
09:52What the hell was that?
09:53I don't know, but it blew up on my finger.
09:54Dude, it like farted out.
09:56What was that?
09:59Yes, Tyler!
10:01Come on, baby!
10:03Woo!
10:05That dirt in my eye.
10:06Sweet.
10:08The other day, we got a very cool slot machine in to restore.
10:12The mechanism in this thing is like a Swiss watch.
10:14And guess what?
10:15It's broken.
10:16So I got to bring this mech to a local slot expert.
10:19He is amazing at what he does, and really, the only man for the job.
10:24Hey, Mike.
10:26Rick, you made it.
10:27Yeah.
10:27Right.
10:28I own Las Vegas Antique Slot Machine Company, and I've been working on these old machines for over 30 years.
10:33And the reason I work on slot machines is because they're pretty rare, and they're beautiful, and they're works of
10:39art.
10:39It's all I do every day.
10:41And I love it.
10:42Alright, Mike.
10:43Here it is.
10:44See what you got.
10:45Oh, that's nice looking, Mac.
10:46Yeah, this is...
10:47It had silver slipper on it.
10:48It was like, you know, like, one like that.
10:50High top.
10:51Yeah.
10:52Alright, so I need to know what the deal is with this.
10:54You got a quarter on you?
10:55No.
10:56Oh.
10:56I don't have a quarter.
10:57No, it's for my tequila cup.
10:58Oh.
10:59That's right.
11:00Well, here's how you play it when it's out of the case.
11:02Okay.
11:03Screwdriver over that bushing.
11:05Okay.
11:05Underneath that spring.
11:06Okay.
11:07Alright?
11:07Alright.
11:08Hold this coin detect lever back.
11:10Okay.
11:10And then you continue down.
11:13Boom.
11:14I want you to try it.
11:15Cool.
11:16Alright.
11:18Okay.
11:19Another thing you should know, that you have five clicks.
11:22Okay.
11:22Alright, now I want you to listen for the five.
11:24Each reel.
11:25One, two, three.
11:27Fingers, four, and the fifth.
11:29That lets the slides come back when you have a winner.
11:31I gotcha.
11:32Fifth click.
11:32I gotcha.
11:33Keep going, Mike.
11:34Let's see how much money we hit the jackpot.
11:37Plum.
11:38Cherry.
11:38Orange.
11:39And it paid us.
11:40It shouldn't have.
11:40So it's paying out and it shouldn't be.
11:42Right.
11:42It shouldn't have paid.
11:43And the reason is there's some, the fingers are sticking, letting the slide come back every
11:48time.
11:49That's actually what the problem is on this one.
11:51Alright.
11:51It needs help.
11:52What we'll do, we'll tear the whole thing down.
11:54Alright.
11:54And start over.
11:55In my business, it's imperative to know the right people.
11:59If we didn't have Mike to help with the mech, this thing would take us twice as long and
12:02we would be over budget.
12:04So as he works on fixing this mech, my guys are going to keep cranking on the rest of this
12:08beauty.
12:15To keep things busy around the shop, I always got to be on the lookout for new projects.
12:19So while I'm out, I'm going to stop by an antique shop that I've been meaning to check
12:22out.
12:22Hopefully, I'll be able to find something worthwhile.
12:25Whoa.
12:26Man.
12:28Hey.
12:29Hello.
12:29Hi, I'm Rick.
12:30I'm Pete.
12:31How are you?
12:31Nice to meet you.
12:33You got a great place here, man.
12:34There's a lot of stuff.
12:35Yeah, we bring it in from all over the world.
12:38So is this stuff for sale or I saw auction on the front?
12:40Yeah, we hold two or three auctions a year.
12:43It's a real show.
12:44You ought to come during the auction and see about 450 people show up live.
12:49This place is amazing.
12:51This just proves that every detour along the way can lead to new business.
12:55I'm thrilled that I actually stopped in today.
12:57This might be a great place to auction off something that we've restored in the future.
13:02Your place is incredible.
13:03Can I look around?
13:04Sure.
13:04Let me show you some things.
13:06Right.
13:07Wow.
13:08That's the old Goodyear sign.
13:09Yeah.
13:10Those mobile cans, those are really cool.
13:13Those are hard to find.
13:13Those look steel, too.
13:15Yeah, those are from maybe the 50s.
13:17Oh, wow.
13:18Look at that old strength machine.
13:201905.
13:20Yeah.
13:21You got a lot of good stuff here.
13:23Yeah, we try hard to have something for everybody.
13:25Right.
13:26Right.
13:26I'm always looking for parts or maybe something you couldn't auction.
13:30We have a lot of things that are needing restoration that maybe you'd like to see.
13:34Yeah, I would love to see that.
13:43So what are we doing now?
13:45We're going to figure out where we have to lay out holes and stuff.
13:48That piece is done.
13:49Rick's got me and Robert building a new carriage for this cannon.
13:53But the old wood's in really bad shape, so we really don't have much to go on.
13:58Ring the bell.
13:59It's lunchtime.
13:59Let's get out of here.
14:01I'm going to ring your bell.
14:02Yeah.
14:03Yeah, right.
14:11I'm here at Pete's Antique Shop and I've already seen some amazing stuff so far.
14:16The coolest part about going on these picks is always being able to check out their back rooms.
14:20That's where all the good stuff always is.
14:23Holy crap.
14:25We've got every part you need.
14:27Here we go.
14:28This is what I'm talking about.
14:30Headrests, which are just the hardest to find.
14:32I'm salivating at the moment.
14:34Some of these console games, they need some work.
14:37Wow.
14:38The crane machine.
14:39Steam shovel.
14:40That's cool.
14:41Yeah, it came from an old arcade.
14:43This is incredible.
14:45I mean incredible how much stuff you've got.
14:48You know, Pete, you and I are going to be good friends.
14:50Pete's collection is top notch and I think I barely scratched the surface of what he has.
14:55Even though I'm not making a purchase today, I'm very happy I made the connection with a great antique dealer
15:00here in town.
15:01Thank you very much.
15:02See you later.
15:03Cheers.
15:13We've been working on this machine from the Silver Slipper Casino for a while now.
15:18Our slot expert just brought back the mechanism.
15:21And just in time.
15:22Because our customers should be here any moment to pick it up.
15:24Cool.
15:34Hey, Rick.
15:35How you been?
15:35Good.
15:36How are you been?
15:36Doing good.
15:37Came out here today to Rick's restoration to pick up my Silver Slipper slot machine.
15:42We all ready?
15:43Ready for the Silver Slipper slot machine.
15:46Man, I'm like excited to show you, but just wait here.
15:48Just give me a second.
15:49We'll get it over here.
15:50When I dropped my slot machine off, it was sort of beat up after the last 50 some odd years.
15:55I have no idea what to expect and I'm hoping for the best.
15:59Oh.
16:02All right.
16:03What do you think?
16:05It looks brand new.
16:07Come on up.
16:08Touch and feel.
16:09Touch and feel.
16:10I don't even want to get it dirty.
16:12Oh.
16:13When I first saw the slot machine, I couldn't believe it was the same piece of junk I dropped
16:17off before.
16:19You know, it was just spectacular.
16:21What do you think of that bad boy?
16:23Isn't that different looking?
16:24Oh, it's beautiful.
16:26Unbelievable.
16:27What all did you have to do to it?
16:29Well, okay.
16:30We changed the color.
16:31You know, in the beginning it was opposite basically.
16:33It used to be all silver in here.
16:34Right.
16:35So we went and painted it and then polished all the paint out.
16:38And then what I did on the wood was I darkened up the wood.
16:42And the reason why we went with the dark stain on the wood was because we transfer colors
16:47and with the black, it wouldn't have looked as sexy.
16:50And then what we did was we came in here and pinstriped all this to sort of give it a
16:54little pop.
16:54Do you like the color?
16:55Oh, I think it's fantastic.
16:56Yeah, it's a beautiful, beautiful piece.
16:58I love the way it looks.
16:59But the question is, does it work?
17:01Well, the mechanism was really messed up.
17:04So we had to end up taking it to a slot machine mechanic that does nothing but mechanism.
17:08Let's give it a try and see if it works.
17:10I'm ready.
17:11Okay.
17:12So, of course, the dime goes in there.
17:17Oh.
17:18Woo!
17:19Almost won a jackpot right off the back.
17:21Let's try your luck.
17:28No, no chicken dinner for you.
17:32No buffet.
17:33Yeah.
17:33So what do you think?
17:34You happy with it?
17:35You like it?
17:35Oh, extremely.
17:37I'm just thrilled with it.
17:38I think it's going to be great.
17:39Good.
17:39I'm really looking forward to getting it home.
17:41Awesome.
17:42Really appreciate it.
17:43Thank you very much.
17:44Well, I'm really excited about getting this back home and getting a little money from all
17:48my friends.
17:48I just hope it doesn't pay off too good because I need to make back all the money that I
17:52spent
17:52getting this thing fixed.
17:55We've just finished with the work on the Civil War cannon.
17:57Okay, here we go.
17:58Oh, God.
17:59I'm very nervous about the cannon being shot off because it hasn't been shot off for some
18:04time.
18:14You're doing frigging awesome, Tyler.
18:16You know how I do it.
18:16Are you doing anything at all?
18:18We've been restoring a Civil War cannon for a while.
18:20After we put it together, Doc, our cannon expert, checked it out to make sure it was
18:24safe to fire.
18:25Now that we got the green light, it's time to see what this bad boy can do.
18:32Hey.
18:33Hello.
18:33Hey, Rick.
18:34How are you guys doing?
18:35We are great.
18:36How are you?
18:36Good, good.
18:37Today, we're here to see Rick from Rick's Restoration and pick up our Civil War cannon.
18:41Well, we got a little hike.
18:42You ready?
18:42I'm ready to hike.
18:43Hike and we'll go.
18:44I thought it would be a good idea to go to a more secluded area to show this thing off.
18:49So I had a buddy hook us up with a shooting range out in the mountains.
18:52That way, I don't piss off the new neighbors by firing this thing off out in the boneyard.
18:57All right, you guys ready?
18:59Yes.
18:59All right, here we go.
19:00One, two, bang!
19:04Oh, man.
19:05Wow.
19:05What do you think?
19:06That is just incredible.
19:07Is that cool?
19:08That's awesome.
19:08It was pieces last time we saw it.
19:10When Rick first unveiled the cannon, it just looked awesome.
19:13I've never seen it look so good.
19:15He did a great job.
19:16What do you think?
19:17Excellent.
19:17Looks good?
19:18I love it.
19:18Doesn't look like the same cannon.
19:19No, it does not.
19:20That's just incredible.
19:22Well, thanks.
19:23Well, you know, when stuff comes in pieces, especially as many pieces that you had, it's
19:29sort of a puzzle.
19:30We wanted to build the wood back the way it used to be, and it was so rotted and busted
19:34and broke, so what we had to do was cut this out of a real big, big pine, and then
19:39we milled
19:40it all down to get it the same size.
19:42This little perch in the back is actually to poke it in the grass or in the dirt, so when
19:47it doesn't have recoil, it doesn't go very far.
19:49The barrel itself, this was in pretty good shape because it's cast iron, it's very, very
19:54thick, and it wasn't too bad.
19:56It just took blasting and cleaning.
19:59The wheels, though, the wheels and the axles were a mess.
20:03We tried to get them off.
20:04They started to come off.
20:04They broke.
20:05It was so rusted inside there that they welded themselves together.
20:08So we had to literally take and drill out each one of the holes to get the thing to split
20:14apart, and then we got some new bolts on there, sort of did the same sort of square
20:19style that they had on there.
20:20That's great.
20:21Were you able to figure out whether it was like Civil War or what era it was from?
20:26Yeah.
20:26Yeah, we found out.
20:27It actually came from the Civil War.
20:29Wow.
20:30That is so cool.
20:31That's cool.
20:31I've never seen it look so good.
20:33Bring back childhood memories, but can you make it work?
20:37Well, I mean, that's why we're all here.
20:39Okay.
20:39We're going to see if it works.
20:41Okay.
20:42Here we go.
20:42Oh, God.
20:44I'm very nervous about the cannon being shot off, because it hasn't been shot off for
20:48some time.
20:51Wow.
20:52I think we get a loss to war by now.
20:53I think...
20:55We f***ed up!
20:57Dang!
20:58We're right here!
21:00Woo!
21:02Oh, my God, that was awesome!
21:09When the cannon first went off, it was just the childhood memories came back, and it
21:14was a little bit of terror there, but I was very excited to see that it worked.
21:19Thank you so much, Rick.
21:20This is priceless.
21:22You bet.
21:22You bet.
21:23That's cool.
21:24Thanks for giving me that.
21:25Awesome.
21:25It was an awesome, awesome time.
21:27Can we do it again?
21:28You want to do it again?
21:29Wow, you aren't that afraid, huh?
21:31You said it a little reluctantly, though.
21:34Absolutely.
21:34I'm ready.
21:35I want to do it again.
21:36I'm ready.
21:37I'm so glad that Rick brought us out to this beautiful location with the sunset.
21:41It's just something I'll never forget.
21:44We love these guys.
21:45Oh, yeah.
21:47All right.
21:49All right, here we go.
21:50Yeah!
21:51Yes!
21:52Yes!
21:52Woo!
21:55Yes!
21:57Woo!
21:58Woo!
