00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02Ron and I are out cruising Route 66.
00:05Oh, my God. I have never seen a chainsaw like this.
00:08You got it? I got it!
00:11Oh, man. It's cool. Come here. Check this thing out.
00:14It's a kinetoscope. I imagine it's pretty rare.
00:17Less than 10,000 ever made.
00:20Drilling out all these rivets seems a bit much.
00:23If that's what Dale Jr. wants, then that's what Dale Jr. gets.
00:27Sometimes, Tyler, you just need to think.
00:31Remember back in the day when things were made by hand
00:34and people took pride in their work?
00:37My name's Rick Dale, and I bring these things back to life.
00:41Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:45There's no owner's manual for what we do,
00:48but there's no job we can't handle.
01:02Today, Ron and I have been cruising Route 66, and we've been doing some serious picking.
01:07Have you stopped here? Have you ever been in there?
01:09No, I have not.
01:10That place looks cool. Let's go check it out.
01:12Sounds good to me.
01:13So far, we've found a lot of cool stuff.
01:16But after doing this 30 years, I know there's always more stuff to be found.
01:20You're Dan?
01:21Yep.
01:21Dan, I'm Ron.
01:22Good to meet you.
01:22I'm Rick.
01:23Good to meet you.
01:24What kind of stuff you got back here?
01:25We got a little bit of everything.
01:26All right, we'll go take a look.
01:27Yeah, come on back.
01:28Awesome.
01:31Holy crap.
01:32Hey, you guys, just walk around and see if you see anything you like.
01:35You got like a GPS system or something for us?
01:37In case we get lost?
01:38I'll send you with a flare gun if you want.
01:40There you go.
01:40This place is amazing.
01:43The problem is, it's so big, I don't even know where to start.
01:48Look at that.
01:49There's this big little box.
01:53That's pretty cool.
01:54They used to put that out next to the gas station.
01:57Yeah?
01:57You know, the guy would come up, he'd sell your wiper blades.
01:59This thing is pretty sweet.
02:01By the 1930s, practically every service station in the country had one of these bright yellow boxes sitting right out
02:08in the open.
02:08It's a cool piece.
02:09As long as we don't get too much money into it.
02:12And it's still got all the instructions and all that.
02:13That's number four up.
02:14Yeah, yeah.
02:15I definitely want to talk to Danny about this.
02:17Absolutely.
02:17Let's go look some more.
02:18Oh, my God, dude.
02:20Freaking how awesome this is.
02:22Oh, my.
02:23I have never seen a chainsaw like this.
02:25Go ahead.
02:28You got it?
02:30I got it.
02:31This is bad.
02:32This thing's huge, man.
02:34I'm not quite sure why a two-man chainsaw is sitting here at the auto salvage yard.
02:38But you never know.
02:39It just might be worth taking home with us.
02:42Oh!
02:43Watch my toes, dude.
02:44Watch my toes.
02:45Oh!
02:46Jeez!
02:49What do you think?
02:51Oh, nice.
02:52Oil display, right?
02:53Yeah, it's an oil display rack.
02:55What they used to do is when you went up to the gas station, you needed oil.
02:58The attendant would come over and grab a can of oil.
03:01And this thing, that's where your spouted go and your rags.
03:05And he'd pull that spout out and he'd have the oil can there and he'd hit it down and
03:09then he'd pour it in the thing.
03:10He had one quart.
03:11Oh, okay.
03:11You want to see something really cool?
03:13Look at this.
03:14Oh, wow.
03:16That was the cover.
03:17I love this.
03:18Although the chainsaw is really cool, I think our best bet is just to get these two gas
03:23station items.
03:24They're both classic pieces and they'll go great packaged together.
03:28What'd you find?
03:29Found this oil thingy and this windshield wiper thingy.
03:34Well, I don't know.
03:35What do you think of them?
03:36A hundred and a half of the boat.
03:37I was hoping more around three and a half or so maybe.
03:43I tell you what, I'll go to two.
03:45I mean, it's a little bit beyond my judgment because I'd like to give them a good home.
03:50Okay.
03:51You know, they've been a little lonely out here.
03:53You know what I mean?
03:53Yeah, probably so.
03:56Yeah, that'll work.
03:58Awesome.
03:58All right.
03:59Awesome.
04:00Thanks guys.
04:00All in all, this turned out to be a pretty good day for picking.
04:03We got a couple of real cool pieces of automobilia that I can't wait to get started on.
04:09Yeah.
04:15It's going to be cool.
04:19Like a flipping Jenga puzzle, dude.
04:21One little thing holding everything on.
04:24You going wrong?
04:25That's the door.
04:25That's how we do it.
04:33We have people showing up at the shop out of the blue from time to time.
04:37Hey, it's Ken.
04:38How you doing?
04:39What's going on?
04:40I have something you have to check out.
04:42Okay.
04:43One thing never changes.
04:44I'm always curious to see what they got for me.
04:47It's like Christmas every day.
04:49Oh, man.
04:51If I can grab that, I'm going to grab the loose pieces.
04:53Man, this is badass.
04:55I came over to see if you can restore my Edison Kinetoscope.
04:59I've tried a few other people.
05:00Lots of searches on it.
05:01No luck.
05:02And I'm going to cross my fingers and see if you can pull something off.
05:05This is what it's supposed to look like.
05:06This is the entire unit itself.
05:09Yeah.
05:09With everything on it, huh?
05:10Is this you in this picture?
05:12No, I don't think so.
05:13No?
05:13No.
05:14On a whim, I bought it at an estate sale.
05:16This jumped at me and I go, wow, I bet that's unique.
05:19This thing is amazing.
05:21It's a Kinetoscope that was designed by Thomas Edison and his team of engineers.
05:27Edison had this idea in his head about taking pictures and putting them on a wall, you know, and making
05:32them move.
05:32So pretty much the DVD player came from this, the VCR.
05:36Everything grew from that, yes.
05:39What do you want to do?
05:41I want to restore it to its original production.
05:44When you cranked it, this would spin around and see, it'd do a frame for every certain amount of turns.
05:50We're going to figure out how it works first, take a whole boatload of pictures, and then slowly tear it
05:55apart, picture, picture, picture, building our own manual.
05:58You know, all that hours in there and the materials I got going on, you're looking at about, you're looking
06:05right around $2,500.
06:06$2,500, yeah.
06:07And it is just an estimate, believe me.
06:10That's definitely the high range I'm thinking.
06:13I'm thinking, you know, $1,500.
06:16First of all, it's not that easy.
06:17It's not like just anybody can do it.
06:19I'm going to hit it right on the head, believe me.
06:22I got to tell you, since I'm not selling it, I'm going to agree to have you get this thing
06:28looking brand spanking new.
06:30I'd be thrilled with that.
06:31Awesome.
06:32I'm counting on you, man.
06:33Be good.
06:34You got it.
06:35All right, thanks.
06:35Come on in the office, we'll do some paperwork.
06:39Bradley, don't drop it.
06:40All right.
06:40Well, we agreed on the price for $2,500.
06:43I'm looking forward for it to get done, and I hope it shocks me.
06:48The Edison projector is going to be a huge challenge to disassemble.
06:52So Kyle and Jeff are starting on that right away.
06:55Meanwhile, Tyler and Cowboy are taking apart the wiper box that we got on a pick.
06:59You're going the wrong way.
07:01Lefty, loosey, righty, tighty.
07:02This project is going to be nice and easy.
07:05We'll just sandblast it, put on a fresh coat of paint, and sell it for some quick cash.
07:10There you be.
07:12Hey, yo.
07:13We got to take the shelves out.
07:14How are you going to get them out?
07:16Rivets.
07:17So you want to pull this thing all apart?
07:19I guess.
07:20I know we're supposed to tear all these items down as much as we can,
07:24but drilling out all these rivets seems a bit much.
07:26If that's what Dale Jr. wants, then that's what Dale Jr. gets.
07:32It's gone.
07:34Cut.
07:34Next one.
07:40Whoa!
07:42All right, let me find out if my dad needs Ted to trace all this art on the side, and
07:46then we can get to sandblasting.
07:48That sounds like a plan, but...
07:50Hey!
07:51I got it under control.
07:57Where do you want me to put it?
08:01What the hell did you do?
08:03I took it apart!
08:04Yeah, but you went way too far!
08:06Jeez.
08:07Today I came to pick up my Edison projector.
08:10Okay, remember, this thing was really, really trashed.
08:13I know what it looked like.
08:13Beat up, round down the hill.
08:15I really hope this thing works.
08:16Otherwise, I'm going to look like an idiot.
08:18Check it out.
08:36What the hell did you do?
08:43I just took it apart.
08:44You popped all the rivets?
08:46Yeah.
08:47Dude, you know what you just did?
08:48You just took like a...
08:50Yeah, but you went way too far.
08:52You sand it, you paint it, you're done.
08:54It's a piece of cake.
08:55This would have been a really nice, easy, cheap piece.
08:58There's a lot of people out there that don't have all that money, so we lost that whole group.
09:01It's going to be harder to sell.
09:03I wanted this piece to be quick and easy, but taking it apart just added a bunch of man hours,
09:08which means I'm going to have to sell it for twice as much just to break even.
09:12Why is it going to cost so much?
09:14Because of all the work we got to do now.
09:16Putting it back together, re-riveting, you're going to have these shiny rivets.
09:19Do these rivets look shiny to you?
09:21Let's take those rivets out.
09:23These rivets you can't get anymore.
09:26Jeez.
09:27I can't believe you did that.
09:28Sometimes, Tyler, you just need to think.
09:32So, where should I put it?
09:39Right now, I'm working on bee-blasting this old movie projector.
09:43And then I'm going to pass off all the broken pieces of Dave so he can weld them up together.
10:04We've been working on restoring an oil can rack that Ron and I found off Route 66.
10:09And now, it's time to get this thing painted.
10:24Get it!
10:25Dang it!
10:27I was just in the paint booth trying to keep these restorations on schedule and had to stop because we
10:32ran out of painting towels that we used to clean these parts.
10:36Ron, didn't we have a full container of those paint wipe towels, the blue ones, the special ones?
10:42What, is it empty?
10:42Yeah, it's empty.
10:44There's a lot of dust out there.
10:45Allergies.
10:46They're like a buck a piece.
10:47They're not to be used for anything but painting.
10:50Sometimes, I'm truly amazed at how cheap Rick is.
10:53But, his shop, his rule.
10:54They're not for blowing your nose, that's for sure.
10:56Those are like totally expensive.
10:59I'm always trying to think of ways to expand my business, but I can't do any of them if I'm
11:03losing money on supplies.
11:05If somebody's using painting towels like their Kleenex, that's like blowing your nose on a dollar and tossing it in
11:11the garbage.
11:12So, if the crew isn't on the same page with me, I'm just going to have to spell it out
11:15for them.
11:24We were hired to restore an Edison projector so that it looks like brand new.
11:28But, I'm going to try to take this project to the next level and try to get it working again.
11:33These projectors needed a separate light source.
11:36So, Cowboys built in a custom box to hold a lamp that should do the trick.
11:57If there's one thing that I can't stand, is when people disregard my rules here at the shop.
12:03It's about time that I find out exactly who's responsible for this once and for all.
12:08All right, all right, all right.
12:25Who's stealing my towels?
12:35Good sweet!
12:39Edison was a great inventor, but sure made a lot of parts for this little machine, huh?
12:42Jeff and I are working on putting this Edison projector back together.
12:45Luckily, we took a lot of pictures of this earlier.
12:47That is definitely that.
12:49See the nut behind you?
12:50But we still have to figure out how to put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
12:54That goes through there.
12:55So that goes on there.
12:59So it looks to me like we got all the pieces on this piece.
13:01All right, let's move on.
13:08Nice little puzzle, huh?
13:09Yeah.
13:10Nice now.
13:12Puzzle, yeah.
13:13We've been working on a couple of old gas station display cases for a while now.
13:17But we hit a bump because I removed all the rivets on the wiper box when I shouldn't have.
13:21Why'd they take it so far apart?
13:23I don't know.
13:25Beats me.
13:26So I just want to get this riveting done as fast as possible and make up some lost time.
13:31Just gonna scratch the side.
13:37There you go.
13:38You pretty good out there, little boy.
13:40Riveting's easy.
13:42This isn't that hard.
13:43I am the rivet master.
13:46You know what?
13:47What?
13:48I think we should have put the back on first.
13:51Get to drilling.
13:53Don't scratch it.
13:54Oh, my God.
13:58Hey.
13:59What's up, Rick?
14:00How are you?
14:01How you been?
14:01Long time.
14:02Good to see you.
14:03Today I came to Rick's restoration to pick up my Edison projector.
14:07Okay.
14:07Remember, this thing was really, really trash.
14:10I know what it looked like.
14:11Beat up, ran down the hill, dusty, ugly.
14:13All right.
14:13Ready?
14:14I'm ready.
14:14Let's go.
14:16Check it out.
14:18What do you think?
14:19That's totally cool.
14:20I didn't even know you were gonna put film in a mock-up light source reel thing there.
14:26Yeah, we got the light source on here.
14:28This is a reel up here with the film.
14:30We sort of made this just to give it the look because we wanted to be able to shoot a
14:33picture through it.
14:34I wanted to be able to show you how the thing worked.
14:36When I saw the projector, I was amazed at the job he did.
14:39It's bigger and better than the original state I left it in because he's got all these other ancillary add
14:44-ons, which was quite fantastic.
14:46What'd you work on first?
14:48All right.
14:48So what we did first was the mechanism itself.
14:50If you remember, right, this gold area here was all messed up.
14:54You know, it was all different colored.
14:55We did all the body work, smoothed it all out, and painted it the same color that it was.
14:59It totally came apart in a million pieces.
15:01So each one of these pieces had to come off.
15:04Some of them had to be painted.
15:05Some of them had to be nickel-plated.
15:07Some of them had to be just cleaned and oiled.
15:09But every single nut screw bolt, everything on that thing had to come off.
15:13Tell me how you figured this one out.
15:15Yeah, well, we got this wood guy that actually designed this to make it look like the original one.
15:20Cool.
15:20The only thing that thing does was shining the light through the frame to send the picture out to the
15:26screen.
15:26This piece here is the focus, and then what you did is you held here, and you could go in
15:31or out.
15:32Well, Rick, I tell you, I am totally impressed.
15:35I can't believe you got to look like this.
15:37So the $64,000 question, is this thing going to actually project something forward?
15:41I put in a lot of extra effort to get this thing working.
15:44And the customer didn't even ask for it.
15:46So I really hope this thing works.
15:48Otherwise, I'm going to look like an idiot.
15:50Let's shut the lights off and give it a shot.
15:53I'm ready.
15:54You ready?
15:55Here we go.
15:57All right.
15:57I see a picture.
15:58I'm going to crank it.
16:00It's pretty cool.
16:02I wasn't expecting the quality to look like this.
16:04This is pretty awesome.
16:06So is this 35 millimeter?
16:08That's 35 millimeter.
16:09That's exactly what they use.
16:10Nice horror film.
16:12The clarity is actually pretty good.
16:14Yeah.
16:15I'm impressed.
16:16I couldn't believe the damn thing worked, because I wasn't expecting that at all.
16:21All right.
16:22So Rick, I'm seeing these extra items.
16:25So I hope you're staying within budget because I'm a little nervous about that part.
16:29You know, I did all this stuff extra, but I did it for a reason.
16:32My biggest thing is to be able to for you to have it and to use it because otherwise I
16:36couldn't show you anything.
16:37Here it is.
16:38Check it out.
16:38You know, so I like giving the customer a little bit more.
16:42And as long as it was in budget, which it was.
16:45Okay.
16:45So we hit the budget.
16:46Okay.
16:47We're on there.
16:48No problems there.
16:49But I wanted to give you that full effect.
16:52Right?
16:52I appreciate the extra credit.
16:53All right.
16:54So we good?
16:54We're good, man.
16:56Thank you very much.
16:57I'm glad I got this piece of history fixed and I'm going to keep it forever.
17:04Today, we're going to the annual Super Run Car Show.
17:07So you ready?
17:08Yes.
17:08Yeah.
17:08Here we go.
17:10Bingo.
17:11Way cool.
17:12Way cool.
17:14All right.
17:15Now we're going to see who's stealing my towels.
17:28This windshield wiper box for restoring has been a total nightmare.
17:31Oh my God.
17:33When we were assembling it, I did it in the wrong order.
17:35So I had to drill the rivets out again, wasting even more time.
17:44Ugh.
17:45Get it.
17:49We're finally wrapping up work on the two items we got on a Route 66 pick.
17:54Ron and Kyle handle the oil can rack reassembly and Ted is doing the graphics on both pieces.
18:01And now comes the tricky part.
18:03I got to find a buyer for these things.
18:04So we're going to load up the truck and hit the road because I know a great place to start.
18:15Today, we're going to the annual Super Run Car Show.
18:18This is where some of the biggest car enthusiasts around come to see some of the coolest classic cars ever
18:24made.
18:25So this should be the perfect place to lure in some automotive collectors.
18:30Got a lot of cool stuff.
18:31Cool?
18:31Nice.
18:32Very cool.
18:32I really got some cool stuff I want to show you.
18:34All right.
18:35Let's see what you got.
18:36We're walking up the street here at the car show and I was just amazed at the quality of work.
18:42You remember when you used to go to the gas stations?
18:44Out the attendant came.
18:45He had his hat on and his rag and he'd roll down the window and say, you know, how can
18:49I help you?
18:49And you get full service.
18:51I mean, full service.
18:52I did work at a gas station.
18:53Pumped gas.
18:54Washed windows.
18:55Never got a tip.
18:57So you ready?
18:58Yes.
18:58Here we go.
19:00Bingo.
19:01Oh, wow.
19:02Way cool.
19:03Way cool.
19:04It's got a cool heritage to it.
19:05You know, it came off Route 66.
19:07Right.
19:07If you turn around, you'll see it on that picture right there.
19:10See, that's how it came in.
19:11Okay.
19:12It's all smashed up.
19:13The front end was all dented and it's sort of dull.
19:15But we polished it all out so it's all nice and shiny.
19:18Oh, wow.
19:18And then inside here would be all right?
19:20Yep.
19:20Here, check it out.
19:22Oh, cool.
19:23Is that cool?
19:24Oh, yeah.
19:25And then this is our other piece over here.
19:27Back there, the same thing was either in the island or in the garage.
19:31I used to remember that.
19:32Yeah?
19:32We had to restock that as well.
19:34That's right.
19:35So that's what it did look like.
19:36Now it looks like this.
19:37You guys ready?
19:38Yeah.
19:38Let's see it.
19:39Here we go.
19:40Ah!
19:42Is it cool?
19:43Check the front out.
19:44Oh, yeah.
19:45Oh, cool.
19:45Get the wiper on it.
19:47Everything.
19:47And Rick unveiled that wiper blade box.
19:49That really brought back a lot of memories to me.
19:51You've just done a beautiful job of it.
19:53I mean, you see the picture.
19:55All the artwork stained and it was brutal.
19:58You can't find those anymore like that.
19:59No.
20:00It's my magic.
20:01And if you remember the inside, it's got some writing in there too.
20:04So this is what we did.
20:05Okay.
20:07Oh, yeah.
20:08Look at that.
20:08All this has been redone.
20:10Is it all detailed?
20:11Authentic?
20:12Exactly what it looked like.
20:13Exactly.
20:13Right?
20:13What really got me was when you opened it up, all the information was there that I could
20:18remember.
20:18It even gives you the dimensions.
20:19It had the dimensions there.
20:21Right.
20:21You have to take the old one off and lay it up here so you know which one to get
20:24it out
20:24of.
20:24Right.
20:25All right.
20:26So you guys got to see them.
20:29Yeah.
20:29Anybody interested in a purchase?
20:32No.
20:32Go ahead.
20:33Depends what price is.
20:34Yeah.
20:34This one here is for sale for $3,200.
20:37$3,200.
20:39$3,200.
20:40That one there is two grand.
20:42Okay.
20:43All right.
20:44Tell you what.
20:44I'll give you $2,500 for it.
20:47For both of them?
20:47Yeah.
20:50It's something that I would really love to have.
20:53Visa.
20:55American Express.
20:58$2,500.
20:59Hmm.
21:01Yeah.
21:01No.
21:01I think I'm going to have to pass on that very early.
21:04Okay.
21:05As much as I would love to make a deal with this guy, I can tell we're way too far
21:09apart
21:09on price here.
21:10That's why it's so important to work efficiently on these restorations.
21:14Because the more time you spend on it, the less room you have for negotiations.
21:18It was great meeting you guys.
21:19Nice to meet you, Rick.
21:20Quite honestly, I wanted to bring him down because any more than that is way too much
21:24for me at this time.
21:25So, you know, in the near future, I'll have to find Rick and look at something to buy
21:28that's a little less expensive.
21:34All right.
21:35Now we're going to see who's stealing my towels.
21:44Oh, my God.
21:47Kelly, too?
21:48Jesus.
21:50Filthy Phil.
21:51He's probably the only one that actually needed a towel.
21:55Cowboy.
21:56The hell did I get these guys?
