00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02It's a two-man chainsaw.
00:04Whoa!
00:05I am hoping it will work again.
00:07If it's seized, which it is, we're SOL.
00:12Oh, wow.
00:13This is a 1930s golf ball slot machine.
00:17This looks like it came off a golf ball machine, but this part doesn't.
00:20The main problem I have is I got mech issues,
00:23and then there's like some electro-mechanical stuff going on the bottom of it.
00:27So that's why I got you both here.
00:28This is beyond repair because it's solid rust.
00:31We're in trouble.
00:34Look at a man's workbench.
00:36You see his passions.
00:39His work's in progress.
00:42The things that drive him crazy.
00:47Projects that?
00:48You get the point.
00:50Anyway, every workbench tells a story,
00:53and this is ours.
00:55American Restoration.
01:04I get all sorts of awesome projects in my shop every day.
01:08And because these items are from back in the day when nobody threw anything away,
01:12a lot of these machines have been worked on
01:14and pieced back together from whatever was available.
01:17So it's my job to put these puzzles back together.
01:20Hey, Rick.
01:21Somebody's got something for you here.
01:23Hey.
01:24I'm Rick.
01:24How are you?
01:25You look good to meet you.
01:27I came to Rick's today to see if he could restore my Mills golf ball slot machine.
01:32Oh, wow.
01:34Since I bought the machine 25 years ago, I've never seen the machine work,
01:37so I hope Rick can get it both operational and pretty.
01:41I found this in northeast South Dakota about 25 years ago at an auction,
01:45and I've always been an avid golfer, and I thought it would be a great golf collectible.
01:48It's definitely a collectible.
01:50It's a Mills page boy.
01:51That's what this signifies.
01:52It's real rare, actually.
01:53It's very art deco.
01:55You can see this here.
01:55I mean, it looks like the Empire State Building.
01:57I mean, that's the design of it.
01:58These machines were actually at country clubs.
02:01You weren't allowed to have a gambling device.
02:03So a lot of these guys were making their money buying machines that had gum vendors
02:08or a toy coming out of it or a golf ball.
02:11The golf ball vendor was marketed in the 30s exclusively to golf course clubhouses.
02:17It would hold as many as 114 balls, and it would pay out 20 for the jackpot.
02:22Oh, yeah.
02:23See this tube?
02:24This looks like it came off a golf ball machine, but this part doesn't.
02:28This one up here is a coin machine.
02:30I had no idea that it wasn't an original golf ball machine.
02:33Right.
02:34They wanted it to look that way.
02:36A lot of people back in the day repurposed items like this using parts from other machines.
02:41So not only do I have a restoration to do, I got to figure out how to make it as
02:45original as possible.
02:46So you basically want to restore it like it would be a golf ball machine.
02:49Right.
02:49Does that sound right?
02:50I want it functional.
02:51Okay.
02:52All right.
02:52Okay.
02:52The bottom line is, what will it cost?
02:55To restore it the way you want, go through the Mac and do all the back and stuff like that.
02:59Do the wood.
03:03I'm looking around eight grand to do the old machine.
03:07That's a lot of quarters.
03:09That's a lot of quarters.
03:10But restored one of these.
03:12They're about 15 to 18 grand.
03:14Some of them go up into the 20s.
03:15I think I can live with that.
03:18All right.
03:18Okay.
03:19All right.
03:19Awesome.
03:20This project is a lot bigger than it looks.
03:23Not only am I going to have to bring in my slot machine guy, but in order to make it
03:27dispense golf balls, I'm going to need an electronics expert as well.
03:38Hey.
03:39Hey.
03:40I'm Rick.
03:40Hey, I'm Mickey.
03:41Mickey.
03:42How can I help you, bud?
03:43I got an old tool here I want to see if you can restore for me.
03:45Okay.
03:46All right.
03:47Whoa.
03:48Check that out.
03:49It's a two-man chainsaw.
03:50That thing's very, very cool.
03:52I got the chainsaw from my dad.
03:54He handed it down to me.
03:55It hasn't been used in years, and it's in real bad shape.
03:59Two-man chainsaws.
04:00Can you imagine operating one of these things?
04:01I know.
04:02It must have been rough.
04:03Yeah.
04:03There's a guy here on this end.
04:05You know, you're holding on to it.
04:06The other guy has his one hand on that.
04:08If you just dip your blade down a little bit where it comes into a wrong angle, it's going to
04:12snap back.
04:13It's going to throw you off the next thing you know, you're getting hurt.
04:15Yeah.
04:16So they're really, really dangerous.
04:17You really need to know what you're doing.
04:19Chainsaws like this were first sold in the 1920s, bringing on a huge increase in lumber production.
04:24The invention of the one-man chainsaw in 1950 allowed smaller crews to cut down more trees.
04:30First, I need to ask you what you want to do with it.
04:32I'm thinking red and maybe some black.
04:34I built houses, and that's the color of my logos and stuff.
04:37Oh, okay.
04:38For the company.
04:38Right.
04:38I'd like to chrome this.
04:41Okay.
04:41It would look really, really sharp.
04:43There's a lot of pieces on here that could be very shiny.
04:46I mean, this is all aluminum.
04:47Okay.
04:48This would polish out beautiful.
04:49And you're going to display this?
04:51Yeah.
04:52I've never seen it working.
04:53I am hoping it will work again.
04:55Oh.
04:57Motors are always the very first thing I check when I'm doing stuff.
04:59And if it's seized, which it is, that usually means that the piston on the inside either didn't get enough
05:05oil or it wasn't oiled correctly.
05:06And the piston scarred the walls of the cylinder, and it got stuck.
05:11It's stuck.
05:12That's going to be one of my biggest issues to try to make the motor run.
05:15Do you know what brand it is?
05:16I have no idea what brand it is.
05:18If it is a major brand, I probably can find parts.
05:21Okay.
05:21But if it's an off brand, we're SOL.
05:25So to do all that, find the parts, get the thing running, I'm looking probably $5,500 to restore the
05:33whole piece.
05:33$5,500, huh?
05:34Yeah.
05:34Yeah.
05:36Okay, I say do it.
05:37Okay.
05:38I'm a little worried about parts, but I want to make it run for you, okay?
05:41Okay.
05:41Let's go in the office, and we'll take care of the rest of the paperwork.
05:43Okay, and then we'll get started.
05:45I am concerned about him being able to find parts since there was no name on there, so I hope
05:50he'll be able to get it running again.
05:59It's over here.
06:00The golf ball machine is a hybrid that uses circuitry that you might find in a pinball machine.
06:05So I called in my dynamic duo, Mike, my slot guy, and Tim, my pinball guy.
06:10Check out that, and then this is what I thought of you, Tim.
06:15I mean, it's got some kind of a stepper in there.
06:16The stepper would step through and check each position for a win and pay out in golf balls.
06:22It would then slide down this habit trail thing and come out in the payout cup.
06:26Instead of coins, you get golf balls.
06:29Right.
06:29Most of the time, slot machines are strictly mechanical, but this one had been converted to electronic as well to
06:37dispense the golf balls.
06:38And I'm fascinated because a lot of the circuits are the same as those used in pinball machines.
06:43We'll fix this all up.
06:44I'll rebuild the whole thing.
06:45It'll have new strips on it, so it'll have golfers on there.
06:49It'll have the hole-in-one.
06:50It'll have a sand trap, and it'll match the award card.
06:53It'll look great, and we'll get rid of these.
06:54Awesome.
06:55And there's some contact points here, which that's going to be Tim's.
06:59Yeah, that's what I figured.
07:00All that right there, right?
07:01Yeah.
07:01Some of this is going to have to be replaced.
07:03Some of it just has to be cleaned.
07:05If you look at the wiring, it's the old cotton-covered wiring.
07:08Constantly a problem with cotton-covered wire just bursting into flames.
07:12So I'll replace all that.
07:13Awesome.
07:14I'm so glad I call these guys in.
07:16If Mike's able to fix this mech with all authentic parts, and Tim can get these electronics back in shape,
07:22it'll be closer to an actual golf ball slot machine than it ever was.
07:26When we go to Peyton on this thing, is this the original color?
07:29This green.
07:30Not for a golf ball machine.
07:31It's going to be wrinkled brown.
07:33So it's got to go brown.
07:34Right.
07:34Okay, so we'll make this thing one really nice piece for this guy.
07:37I know we're going to blow him away.
07:38I mean, all three of us together on one machine, it's going to be bad.
07:40I'm ready.
07:41Come on, guys.
07:42Thanks.
07:43One, two, three.
07:46Holy that's the same chainsaw?
07:49It's mean looking.
07:50This is the brains of the operation.
07:52Without the brains, the machine gets the big hammer.
07:55We may not make it.
07:56Yeah.
08:10What do we got?
08:11I'm hoping you could tell me.
08:13It looks like a dinosaur.
08:14The biggest challenge of the chainsaw project will be getting it running again.
08:18So I got one of my best motor guys, Ed, tearing it down with Kyle to see if they can
08:23get to
08:23the core of the problem.
08:25I love Ed's delicate touch.
08:27It works almost every time.
08:31Bingo.
08:33Rick told us as we're tearing this thing down, we had to figure out what brand it is.
08:36That way he can research it easier.
08:38So hopefully we can find an ID tag somewhere on this thing.
08:41I don't see any numbers.
08:44Well, there should be a flag or tag, something somewhere.
08:49Ooh.
08:50Is that water or fuel?
08:53That's water.
08:55No, water and engines don't go good together.
08:58Nope.
09:00Depending on how this cylinder looks in there, we'll determine if it's salvageable.
09:06Oh, .
09:07Oh, no.
09:09That is the inner coating for the cylinder.
09:14The cylinder will have to be re-chromed, new rings, new piston, if it's even available.
09:22Well, we still don't even know what this is.
09:23Right.
09:24That's not good, Ed.
09:26We need to get with Rick.
09:27We need to show him this right now.
09:29Not only did we not find a manufacturer on this chainsaw, we also discovered the motor might
09:34be toast.
09:34I have to tell Rick right away.
09:36What do we got?
09:38Don't look good, Rick.
09:40This is all stuck together.
09:42That's a big problem.
09:43Huge problem.
09:44So, soak it in the cleaner, basically, to get it all clean, de-gunked, and then I'd lubricate
09:50it and let it sit for a few hours, and then I'd try to get it to move, get it
09:53out.
09:53I'm going to research this until I find the manufacturer.
09:56If we can't find parts, it will never work again.
09:58All right, guys.
09:59Let's get it soaking up.
10:00Maybe we'll find a number on it when we get all the grease off.
10:04Well, if you do, let me know.
10:05Yeah, sure.
10:15Hey, Rick.
10:16Got some problems with the golf ball slot machine.
10:19We've been working on a slot machine that pays out in golf balls instead of quarters.
10:24While my slot expert, Mike, has been working on the mech, Tim has been working on the electromagnetic
10:28piece, and it looks like he has some issues.
10:30This is a mechanism that's supposed to count and dispense the golf balls.
10:35This step unit here is beyond repair.
10:37The corrosion and rust is so complete, I've got to find another one, and then I've got
10:41to program it to do what this one used to do.
10:44Oh, my God.
10:45When you pull the handle and the reels stop, this part is what's supposed to determine
10:50that there's a winner there, and then it's supposed to pay out a certain amount of golf
10:55balls for that winner.
10:56This is the brains of the operation.
10:58Without the brains, usually what happens is the machine gets the big hammer.
11:02I'm not hopeful.
11:03We may not make it.
11:04Yeah.
11:06All right.
11:06Well, thanks.
11:07Thanks.
11:08Thanks.
11:09Tim's the only guy that I know that can pull this off.
11:11If he can't, I'm going to have a very disappointed customer.
11:21Ed, how long has this been in here?
11:23Overnight.
11:23It's soaked all night long.
11:25So, so far, it's just been degreasing it, right?
11:26Yeah, I haven't put it in the rust tank yet.
11:29When we tore down the saw, I found out that the motor was seized.
11:31So I had Ed soak it overnight.
11:34So now I'm going to see if it's unstock.
11:36You ready?
11:36Got it.
11:37Yes, sir.
11:42All right.
11:44Awesome.
11:44Awesome.
11:45Awesome.
11:45Awesome.
11:46I didn't think it was coming out.
11:48And there's the rust.
11:48Yeah.
11:49It just rusted itself to the cylinder.
11:51Now that we know that it's rusted instead of seized, probably once we go into the rust
11:56stuff, all this stuff will come off.
11:58Just keep on going at it.
12:00I'd like to get a new piston, but if I can't find one, we may be able to salvage the
12:04one
12:04we have.
12:05All right.
12:06You bet.
12:13Don't go too fast.
12:14It's going to take off.
12:16A while back, a customer sent us a 1940s Murray airplane pedal car.
12:20The restoration is almost complete.
12:22I just want to have one more look before we ship it off.
12:25It was destroyed when it came in.
12:27Really beat up.
12:28Yeah, it looks fantastic.
12:30It looks sharp.
12:31Ted did a great paint job on it.
12:32Oh, yeah, I like the sparkle in it.
12:34Yeah, yeah, it looks good.
12:35This is called a pursuit plane.
12:36It's got pursuit right across here, and of course, with the U.S. Air Force shield on
12:40the top.
12:41It was missing these tails.
12:42It was missing the steering wheel.
12:44It was missing the prop.
12:45And the cool thing is, is when you're running, it's actually spinning away, you know?
12:50It's cool, huh?
12:51Yeah.
12:53It'll be taken off.
12:55Cool.
12:55Looks fantastic.
12:57All right.
12:58Let's take a little flight.
13:06Hey, Tim.
13:07Hey, Rick.
13:08How you been?
13:09Doing good.
13:10Doing good.
13:11Hey, I can see you're working on the golf ball slot.
13:13Please tell me you got a little better news than the last time you talked to me.
13:16I think we're close to having something here.
13:19I'm here at the Pinball Hall of Fame to visit with Tim and see how he's doing on the golf
13:23ball
13:23slot machine.
13:24The last time I saw Tim, he told me that the stepping mechanism was too far gone.
13:28I'm hoping that he figured out something to make this thing work.
13:32So I found this mechanism here on one pile of scrap, and then I found this gear.
13:37It has to be a gear that steps exactly nine times because there's nine possible winners
13:42on the slot machine.
13:43And then over here on the other side, I had to find each one of these fingers.
13:48Right.
13:48It's checking for two cherries, three plums.
13:51Once it's checked, all nine positions, then it'll go ahead and pay golf balls out of this
13:57mechanism.
13:58So this thing's going to tell this switch, okay, I'm going to give it nine balls.
14:02Right.
14:03Right.
14:03So instead of getting money, they're going to get golf balls.
14:07All right.
14:07I've got it kind of jerry-rigged in here.
14:10Right.
14:11So that I can test it.
14:12I can hook up the last of the wires here, and we can see if this is going to work.
14:18Okay.
14:19These fingers should step through to determine each position, whether there's a winner there.
14:25If this thing doesn't work, it'll never work because Tim is like the only guy in the world
14:30that I know that can make this happen.
14:31If it steps nine times, I think we've got a winner.
14:35So here we go.
14:39Ah!
14:40It's moving.
14:42All right on.
14:43Look at that.
14:44Look at that.
14:44Look at that.
14:45It's going.
14:45Each one of these fingers is going through and checking for different winners.
14:50Tim is awesome.
14:51To be able to actually take a bunch of parts and make this stepping mechanism work, he's
14:56a genius.
14:57That's done.
14:58I think we're there.
14:59Awesome.
15:00Thank you, Tim, very much.
15:01See you later.
15:05The two-man chainsaw was a big job inside and out.
15:08Our research led us to discover that it's a McCullough from the early 50s, so we were
15:13able to track down the parts needed to make it run.
15:15The motors back together, the parts are painted and chromed.
15:19Now we're just doing the finishing touches before showing it to the customer.
15:23All right, Mickey.
15:24It's right out here.
15:25Oh, I can't wait to see it.
15:26I'm here at Rick's Restorations today to pick up my two-man chainsaw.
15:30My dad passed this chainsaw down to me, so it's got a lot of sentimental value.
15:34I just can't wait to see it, and I hope it's running.
15:36You remember what this thing looked like when you dropped it off, right?
15:39Oh, yeah.
15:39Just a bunch of pieces.
15:40Rusted pieces.
15:41Right.
15:41It was just a pile of junk.
15:43Okay, here we go.
15:45One, two, three.
15:48Holy, look at that.
15:50That's the same chainsaw?
15:52That is the same chainsaw.
15:54Does that not just say, give me a tree right now, and I want to saw that thing down?
15:57That is awesome.
15:59It's mean looking.
16:00What really popped out to me was all the chrome and the colors.
16:04Rick did an excellent job incorporating my colors for my business, red and black.
16:08It looks awesome.
16:09It's a showpiece now.
16:10That's what I wanted, right?
16:11Yeah, yeah.
16:12Right.
16:12We researched it, found the manufacturer.
16:14It's a McCullough model, 755.
16:17It's seven horsepower and 55 pounds of end weight.
16:22Everything on this thing has been redone from the recoil to the motor, all the way to the
16:27transmission.
16:28On the bar, we ended up chroming it.
16:30I wanted it really, really shiny, be able to see like a mirror.
16:33The chain, I sort of wanted to offset it with a different color, so I ended up doing with
16:37this CAD plate, so it gives it a little bit of different texture.
16:39That chain is unbelievable.
16:41I can't believe you got it to look better than you like that.
16:44Yeah.
16:45One of the other things that's very versatile about this McCullough, you actually can spin
16:49the blade.
16:50Let's say if you wanted to go sideways, you would hold that, sort of lift it up a little
16:53bit.
16:54I would undo this.
16:56Okay.
16:56And now you should be able to spin it.
16:58There you go.
16:59Boom.
17:00I'll lock it back down again.
17:01Wow.
17:02Check it out.
17:02That is awesome.
17:03Okay.
17:03So now we're going through the tree sideways.
17:06Right.
17:08That's such an awesome feature.
17:10It's so badass, I just want to cut a tree down with it.
17:13You might be able to do that.
17:15I'm hoping he was able to get it running so I can crank it up and hear it run.
17:19All right.
17:20Let's see how she goes.
17:24Wow.
17:25That is just awesome.
17:27It just sounds like it's got a lot of power.
17:29Yeah.
17:30I'm really impressed.
17:33My plan now is to take it home, hang it up in my shop.
17:37Just can't wait to see everybody's reaction when they come in and look at it.
17:40Well, Rick, I'm just so happy and pleased with it.
17:43I couldn't ask for anything more.
17:45All right, bud.
17:46Let's go in the office.
17:47We'll finish up the paperwork.
17:48Okay.
17:48It was a really fun project.
17:49I'm glad.
17:51All paint looks similar after it's dried.
17:54But sometimes when restoring an old item, you need to know what kind of paint you have.
17:59Which of these can be used to determine if old paint is oil-based or latex?
18:04A, water, B, denatured alcohol, C, paint stripper, D, bleach.
18:10The answer and more coming up.
18:17Which of these can be used to determine if old paint is oil-based or latex?
18:23The correct answer is B, denatured alcohol.
18:26Take a rag, dip it in alcohol, and then rub it back and forth on the surface.
18:32If the paint doesn't come off like you can see here, then you have oil-based paint.
18:37If it does come off like you can see here, then you have latex.
18:41This is a great tip when you're doing your restoration as far as what kind of a product to paint
18:46on top of your old one.
18:51The golf ball slot machine is finally ready to go.
18:54Mike and Tim worked on the mechs, and my guys did the woodwork, painting, polishing, and assembly.
19:00I'm optimistic that the customer will score it as a hole-in-one.
19:04Hey, Rick.
19:05Hey.
19:06Yulik's here for the golf ball slot machine.
19:08Awesome.
19:09Hey, Yulik, how you been?
19:10Good.
19:11I was sure excited to hear that my golf ball slot machine was ready.
19:13You want to see it?
19:14I sure do.
19:15Hey, come on, it's over here.
19:16I bought this machine 25 years ago, and it was not working then.
19:20So I'm very excited, hopefully, to see that machine work today.
19:24Here it is right here.
19:26Okay.
19:27All right, so Yulik, you remember how this thing used to look.
19:30I mean, it was just beat up.
19:32It was trash.
19:32The wood was all rotten.
19:34The mechanism was all rusted.
19:36There was just very little left of the machine.
19:37All right, so keep that in your head.
19:39You ready to go?
19:40I'm ready.
19:41One, two, three.
19:43Check it out.
19:44Holy moly, that can't be the same machine.
19:48Wow, that looks really, really good.
19:50Is that cool?
19:51If I showed the pictures before and after, there's no way to recognize it.
19:54I was blown away.
19:55I just couldn't believe that it was the same machine that I brought in here.
19:59Somebody actually converted it to a golf ball machine.
20:02It originally took quarters and paid out quarters.
20:05Yours had the page boy on the front of it.
20:06This particular machine has the payout right here instead of the page boy.
20:10This bottom casting is an original one.
20:12There was one here, but it's made to take coins, and they cut out the jackpot area and
20:17ended up sticking golf balls in there.
20:19So I wanted to replace this back with the original piece.
20:22This is the cup for the golf balls.
20:24We went and got the right one that mounts down here, painted it the same color.
20:27So now you've got a totally original golf ball machine from top to bottom.
20:31It's a pretty overwhelming machine now.
20:33The fact that Rick was able to find original parts to restore that machine to absolutely original
20:38condition preserves the integrity of the machine.
20:41It just makes everything better.
20:43Okay.
20:44Wow.
20:44See how the mech's all been gone through?
20:46This looks completely different than when I brought this thing in here.
20:49I know that.
20:49It was a rust bucket when it came in.
20:52Yeah, it really, really was.
20:54Every part inside there has been reworked.
20:56It's all been cleaned up and glass-beaded to make it look like it's brand new again, which
21:00it is, and then all the reels, got new reel strips put on them in the theme of golf.
21:06After seeing this machine collecting dust in my garage for 25 years, to see it beautifully
21:13restored exceeded all my expectations.
21:16I'm dying to see if it works.
21:17Yeah.
21:18Okay.
21:18Here's some quarters.
21:19Now you can test your luck.
21:28Look out there.
21:29Three greens.
21:31Well, that is cool.
21:32Isn't that cool?
21:33You got three balls, green, green, green, and it paid you out three.
21:38I'm really happy with it.
21:40Let's go in the office, we'll finish up some paperwork, and I'll help you load.
21:42Sounds good.
