00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:03This is an old cannon that I had.
00:05Holy crap, it's cool.
00:06As I'm looking at this, it's missing this cap,
00:08so we're gonna have to make something to make it fire,
00:10and also make sure it's totally safe.
00:12Hey, guys, Kelly and I have been talking about doing an auction.
00:15Auctioneer, 100%.
00:17That's all me, man.
00:18No.
00:19If I let one of these guys run it, we could destroy business.
00:22But family's family, so I guess I gotta let them try.
00:25So what can I do for you?
00:27Well, I want to take you back in time here,
00:28back to the Italian countryside.
00:30Let's see what you got.
00:32What is that?
00:33It looks like it got in a wreck.
00:37Look at a man's workbench.
00:39You see his passions.
00:41His work's in progress.
00:46The things that drive him crazy.
00:50Projects that?
00:51You get the point.
00:53Anyway, every workbench tells a story,
00:56and this is ours.
00:58American restoration.
01:02I'm always surprised by the items that people bring in,
01:05but sometimes I'm just as surprised at the cars they drive.
01:08Look at this thing.
01:09Damn.
01:10Hi, how are you?
01:11Hey, how are you doing?
01:12Nice car. That's very cool.
01:15This is pretty cool.
01:16The antenna.
01:17It's got the Kleenex holder in it.
01:18It's got the pipe holder.
01:19It's got everything.
01:20Yeah.
01:21This is a 57 four-door Bel Air.
01:23Right.
01:24It's cool.
01:25Well, I have something in the trunk.
01:27I want to show you guys.
01:28Okay, let's see what you got.
01:30What is that?
01:31Holy crap.
01:32This is an old Canon that I have.
01:34Wow.
01:35It's cool.
01:36All right.
01:37Let's take this out.
01:38I'm going to bring it over here.
01:39Okay.
01:40Where did you get this?
01:41Well, this here is actually a device that my grandfather used to use.
01:48Okay.
01:49He was a parade marshal in Niagara Falls, New York.
01:52This thing would actually go boom, and all the people would know that the parade was about
01:56to start.
01:57That's cool.
01:58It was just a bang, and it just bellowed down the whole road.
02:00I mean, that's the fondest memories I have.
02:02It's amazing to think that cannons and stuff have been around since the 1300s.
02:06You know, cannons in the beginning, they shot rocks.
02:09Can you imagine that hitting you?
02:10Some Flintstones stuff.
02:11Yeah.
02:12Right?
02:13Right.
02:14So, what do you want to do with this?
02:15Well, I'd like to use it for a signal cannon.
02:16Gotcha.
02:17I do a benefit car show every year for law enforcement or fire officials that have a terminal cancer.
02:23Wow.
02:24I would like to use this as a call, just like my grandfather would, but I want to use it
02:28for a call to trophies.
02:29Time to come get your trophies, man.
02:31Gotcha.
02:32I think this is so cool if this guy wants this restored.
02:34Not only a memory of his grandfather, but also to use in charity events.
02:38Stuff like this makes me love my job.
02:41All right.
02:42So, as I'm looking at this, there is some repairs.
02:45I'm seeing welding here.
02:46This thing here is screwed on.
02:48I have no clue what that's doing.
02:49I'll have to research or ask a couple of experts and find out exactly what it is.
02:53Probably the biggest thing is actually making it work.
02:55I was missing this cap.
02:56So, we're going to have to make something to make it fire and also make sure it's totally
02:59safe.
03:00So, to do this, I'm looking at probably 3,500, maybe even 38.
03:05Wow.
03:06For that, I think we should do it.
03:08All right.
03:09Awesome.
03:10Thanks, thanks.
03:11Thanks.
03:12It's my hope that Rick can bring this cannon back to that sound that I remember growing
03:16up.
03:17Once in a while, I call for a family meeting.
03:22It's just a really good way to get everyone on the same page about what's going on here
03:27at the shop.
03:28Kelly and I have been talking about some ideas to generate some sales, you know, get more
03:32people in and stuff like that.
03:33So, her and I have been talking about doing an auction.
03:36Every now and then, Kelly and I brainstorm ideas on how to grow the business.
03:41This time, we came up with a really great one.
03:44An auction.
03:45This would be a great way to get rid of some of the extra stuff we got here and make some
03:50extra money.
03:51I think that that's a way for us to get some more interest, get some more customers, all
03:55that, you know?
03:56What do you guys think?
03:57Sounds good.
03:58Sales are always awesome.
03:59Auctions are fun.
04:00Yeah.
04:01It's going to take some planning.
04:02It's not going to happen overnight.
04:03So, Kelly's going to go ahead and email the customers.
04:05Tyler, what your project is, is it some kind of a platform for maybe the auctioneer?
04:09Auctioneer?
04:10Isn't that the person that goes 50, 55 since then?
04:12He's the guy that does the selling.
04:14That's all me, man.
04:15No.
04:16Auctioneer.
04:17100%.
04:18The man.
04:19I don't know about that.
04:20Oh dear.
04:21What, you both want to do it?
04:22Yeah.
04:23But I think, you know, we're going to have to see.
04:25Sounds like it's throwing down the gauntlet.
04:28We're doing an auction to help business.
04:31But if I let one of these guys run it, we could destroy business.
04:34But family's family, so I guess I got to let them try.
04:38You know, if I'm going to go ahead and trust one of you two to be the auctioneer and not
04:42hire somebody, you're going to have to prove that you're that person that's going to make
04:45us money.
04:46Tyler, you got your role.
04:47Kelly's got a role.
04:48I know what I've got going on.
04:49So you two need to figure this out.
04:51All right?
04:52Well, good?
04:53Good.
04:54All right.
04:55I'm going to have to tell you about this.
04:56Being an auctioneer would be sweet.
04:57And you know, since Tyler's foreman and Ron's been going on a lot more picks, this could
05:00be the way I could step it up at the shop.
05:03Ron, you're going to have a chance.
05:05We'll see.
05:06Good luck.
05:0755, 60, 65, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85.
05:10Tyler and I are already busy getting ready for our first auction.
05:15But we can't lose sight of our bread and butter.
05:17And that's every customer that comes into the shop.
05:20Rick Dale, how are you?
05:21Good.
05:22How are you?
05:23Good.
05:24I'm Dan.
05:25Dan, good to meet you.
05:26This is my son, Tyler.
05:27Tyler, pleasure to meet you.
05:28Nice to meet you.
05:29So what can I do for you?
05:30Well, we'll take you back in time here, back to the Italian countryside.
05:31Let's see what you got.
05:33What is that?
05:35It looks like it got in a wreck.
05:37I came to Rick's restoration today to get an estimate on my 1950s Italian folding bike.
05:42This is cool.
05:43And it's Italian.
05:44It definitely is Italian.
05:45I mean, they're real, real convenient.
05:46You put them in a trunk of a car.
05:48You can put them wherever you wanted to and still get around.
05:51You know?
05:52That's the advantage of it.
05:53Yeah.
05:54But their big claim to fame is that in World War II, the paratroopers would fold them up
05:59and they'd put them on their backpack and they'd jump.
06:01And they could get down on the ground and they could just, they could run around on it.
06:05Very cool.
06:06Bikes like this may seem like a novelty to us in the United States, but they were really
06:10big overseas because they were so portable.
06:12And the fact that bikes like this were used in war, that's pretty cool.
06:17Okay.
06:18So are you wanting to ride it?
06:19Are you going to show it or what you guys want to do?
06:21I think, you know, probably both.
06:23You know, the goal is to keep it as original as possible.
06:25All right.
06:26So in order to find parts like these, these are usually always a heck of a time.
06:30Yeah.
06:31The light on the back is going to be a huge problem.
06:33Luckily the pedals are in great shape.
06:35We can restore those.
06:36What is this going to cost me?
06:37Um, I'm looking at probably 3,200 for everything.
06:40Okay.
06:41Yeah.
06:42Well, 32 is definitely, you know, a little higher than I was thinking.
06:46Yeah.
06:47I mean, I don't want to be upside down this thing either.
06:48Can you give me anything that starts with a two?
06:50I tell you, as low as I'll go on this, I'll end up with a two in the front, but it's going to be a nine in the end of it.
06:55So it's going to be 29.
06:56It's a lot more work than people understand, and I want to do it right.
06:59Okay.
07:00So that's as low as I can go.
07:01Well, I love the bike and, you know, I like the direction you're going.
07:05You're very knowledgeable about it, which is important to me.
07:07So, uh, got yourself a deal.
07:08All right.
07:09All right.
07:10Awesome.
07:11Awesome.
07:13Thank you so much.
07:14Awesome.
07:15I'm super excited to get this bike restored, but I'm not excited to tell the wife that I've spent $2,900 on a bike.
07:18However, I know that Rick's going to do a wonderful job, and it's going to be worth it, and she'll be happy.
07:22How's it fold?
07:24We're going to have an auction on.
07:26You better bring your game, buddy.
07:27We're going to start with this Airstream trailer.
07:30Just like everything else here, it looks like crap.
07:32I hope this isn't the worst idea of all time.
07:35We're live.
07:36Let's go.
07:37Three, two, one.
07:39Fire in the hole!
07:46Oh!
07:47Luckily, it's a little cannon.
07:49Earlier, a customer brought in a small cannon that he wants to get restored.
07:53It's missing some important parts, and he wants it to fire.
07:56So I'm taking it to my friend, Doc, who's a gun expert, to figure out exactly how I can fire this thing off safely.
08:02Hey, what you got there, Rick?
08:04It's some kind of a mini cannon.
08:06I don't know.
08:07I brought it in because I need help.
08:08Let's move it over this way so we can have more access to it.
08:12I take care of all the firearms here.
08:13I'm the master gunsmith.
08:15And I've been in cannons and firearms for about 30 to 35 years.
08:18All right.
08:19A customer brought it in, and he wants to get it restored.
08:22And my problem is it looks like it's half handmade.
08:24He didn't have any caps that went on here.
08:27So the longer I looked at it, the more I don't know if it really, really fired.
08:31And I think that's his big thing.
08:33He wants it to work again.
08:34Right.
08:35This type of a cannon would be more of a signal cannon.
08:38It does not fire a projectile at all.
08:40Okay.
08:41They had them at the end of the Civil War and end of World War I.
08:44It's a black powder breach.
08:46So you would put your load here and then screw in your breach plug back here.
08:50And then they would have a lanyard back there and they would pull it and it would hit a firing pin and send out noise and smoke.
08:56And they used them specifically for signaling the troops.
09:00So that's basically what he wanted anyways.
09:02He just wants it to fire, make a big boom.
09:05With this piece on the end, I have no clue what it even looks like.
09:07Do you?
09:08Yeah, I could actually make a drawing for you.
09:11Okay.
09:12To give you something.
09:13It's called a breach plug.
09:14It's going to go in and it's a half turn.
09:16Okay.
09:17It locks it in so when it's fired, it doesn't come back out.
09:20Gotcha.
09:21Man, am I glad that I came to see Doc about this thing.
09:24The last thing I would have wanted to do was fire this thing off with the customer and have it backfire because it didn't have a breach gap.
09:31It sounds like it's something that we will be able to have made.
09:34So that's good news.
09:42One more three.
09:43Giving me three.
09:44Who's got four?
09:45Sold!
09:46Rick and Kelly want to have an auction at the shop.
09:48So Bretley and I are hanging flyers to help spread the word.
09:51My brother said he might give Bretley or me the chance to be the auctioneer depending on who does better.
09:56I think I've got this in the bag, but this might be a good time for me to check out my competition.
10:00Let's hear what you got, man.
10:02Let's hear your auctioneer voice.
10:04All right, folks.
10:05We have a phonograph here.
10:06We're going to start the bid off at $5.
10:09$5 good?
10:11You start low, dude.
10:12Bretley's skills were lacking at best.
10:15I can't wait for this audition.
10:17I'm going to stomp them.
10:20Hey, Rick.
10:21Hey, hey.
10:22Warm enough for you out here?
10:23Yeah, it's a little warm.
10:25How you been, bud?
10:26How are you, bud?
10:27Good to see you.
10:28I'm in restoration today to pick up my Italian folding bike.
10:30So you ready to see this thing?
10:31I am, man.
10:32I'm looking forward to it.
10:33I'm pumped.
10:34Yeah, it came out pretty awesome.
10:35Everything is really awesome, actually.
10:36It was an absolute mess when I dropped it off, so.
10:38Yeah, it had some issues.
10:39I got to go get it, though.
10:40So stay here, stay excited.
10:41I'll be right back.
10:42All right.
10:43When I dropped off this bike, it was in terrible shape.
10:45I'm hoping that they were able to match the colors, the tires, and most importantly,
10:49keep it in budget.
10:50Okay, you ready?
10:51I'm ready.
10:52Oh, man.
10:55Unbelievable.
10:56Is it looking Italian enough for you now?
10:59It is, man.
11:00I'm ready for the Italian countryside.
11:02This is amazing.
11:04I was just absolutely floored.
11:06Colors, tires, brakes, everything.
11:08It's absolutely amazing.
11:09What do you think?
11:11It is unbelievable.
11:13Unbelievable.
11:14I just can't even believe what I'm looking at.
11:16It all looks new again, sort of, right?
11:18Yeah.
11:19Like every piece on here.
11:22Bicycles are like watches.
11:24You know, there's a lot of parts that have to go back together exactly right, or it just
11:28doesn't work.
11:29So each one of these wheels come off, but then they have to be torn apart.
11:32But these spokes all have to be trued, and they've got to be tight in here in order
11:35for the wheel to go straight.
11:36It's spot on.
11:37I mean, it's just unbelievable.
11:38And the color?
11:39You found the color, too?
11:40I found the color, yeah.
11:41There's portions of the bike that weren't faded, and you saw the original color.
11:44So before we took and sandblasted the whole thing out, we went and matched the paint.
11:48And then you just basically just take two colors and you mix them together until you
11:51get just this color exactly.
11:52It's spot on.
11:53Rick was able to pull together all the details so perfectly.
11:56I mean, all the intricacy and the work was amazing.
11:58I hope Rick was able to keep it in budget.
12:00All right, Dan.
12:01I got a confession to bake.
12:02You remember when I first quoted you to $3,200, and then you sort of got me down to
12:06$2,900?
12:07All the chrome and making a few of the extra parts threw us over budget.
12:10We ended up at $3,200.
12:12Well, it did just get about 10 degrees hotter here for sure.
12:16Yeah.
12:17I don't want you to hit me over the head with the bike, but I just got the bike finished.
12:20I just crunched the numbers, you know.
12:22And because I didn't call you, and I don't want to hit you with that at the very last minute,
12:25I'm going to give it to you for the 29.
12:27So, you good with that?
12:29Well, that's great, Rick.
12:30I really appreciate you doing that.
12:32And the wife will let me come home tonight, which is a good thing.
12:35So, I really appreciate it.
12:38You know, ride it around.
12:39Let's go inside.
12:40We'll take care of the paperwork, okay?
12:41All right.
12:42Well, Rick told me it went a little over budget.
12:43I was a little taken back by that, but then he said he was going to keep it at the original
12:47price we talked about, and I was really impressed.
12:49I am looking forward to getting this bike home and riding it around the neighborhood
12:52and then putting it up.
12:53All right, guys.
12:54We're going to have an auction off.
12:55Let's do it.
12:56Okay?
12:57We're getting ready for the first ever auction at Rick's Restoration, and I'm super excited.
13:03Ron and Bradley have both been battling to be an auctioneer, and I can only figure one
13:08way to settle it.
13:09So, I'm going to pick an item, and you two are going to auction it to us, okay?
13:13And we're going to see how you do.
13:16And the guy that sells it the best is going to be the guy that gets the job.
13:20Start the tricycle.
13:22Uh-oh.
13:23All right.
13:24Age over beauty, Ron.
13:25It's time to draw first blood.
13:27I'm going to show this kid who's boss.
13:29All right.
13:30Up for auction today, we have a 1950s tricycle.
13:33All right?
13:34Beautiful, original condition.
13:36Let's start the bidding at $500.
13:39$500 for this tricycle.
13:40Is that restored?
13:41That's a motion, sir.
13:42$500.
13:43$500 right there.
13:44$500.
13:45We got $500.
13:46Put it down.
13:47$50.
13:48$500.
13:49$500.
13:50$500.
13:51$500.
13:52$500.
13:53$500.
13:54$500.
13:55$500.
13:56$500.
13:57$500 right there.
13:58$600.
13:59$600 anywhere.
14:00$600.
14:01Final call.
14:02Sold to the big dude in the middle there.
14:05$600.
14:06I'll take my scooter.
14:08I think it was $550.
14:09You didn't get $600.
14:11I tried to make an extra $50 for you.
14:13I'll give it to Ron.
14:14That was pretty good.
14:15But I have what it takes to top them.
14:17Bradley.
14:18What?
14:19You better bring your game, buddy.
14:20Bring it.
14:21All right.
14:22We're going to start with this freaking Airstream trailer.
14:25You got the AC up top.
14:27How's the inside?
14:28Just like everything else here.
14:30It looks like crap, but I mean, we can work with it.
14:33So we're going to start the bid at $500.
14:36I mean, $500.
14:37You can't even buy a lawnmower for $500.
14:39Come on.
14:40Yep.
14:41There we go.
14:42$500.
14:43Go out here.
14:44$550.
14:45$550.
14:46$650.
14:47I'm in.
14:48He's got it for $650.
14:49Come on now.
14:50Who's got it for $7?
14:51$7 and a quarter.
14:52$7 and a quarter.
14:53He's stepping it up.
14:54$750.
14:55$1,000.
14:56Oh, $1,000.
14:57Right here.
14:58$1,000.
14:59$1,150.
15:00I'm going $1,200.
15:01And anybody that outvids me has to actually come up with the cash in the pocket,
15:04because I want to own that trailer.
15:06I'm out.
15:07Sold to the guy who actually owns the trailer.
15:09Put a stop to that.
15:12Both Ron and Brentley did a great job, but this isn't an easy decision.
15:16I still have the option of going with a professional auctioneer, so I really got to think about what to do.
15:21We've got to make money, so I got to decide which one of you is going to make us the most money.
15:25Okay?
15:26But you're both definitely on the path.
15:28Nice.
15:29On the path.
15:30What's the most efficient way to salvage an old, rare rubber tire?
15:36A. Brush on chemical solvent.
15:39B. Polish it with compound.
15:41C. Glass bead.
15:43What's the most efficient way to salvage an old, rare rubber tire?
15:55The answer is C. Glass bead it.
15:58Here at the shop, a lot of the projects that we get in are like pedal cars and tricycles, that the rubber is actually mounted to the rim.
16:05There's no way you're going to get it off.
16:07So what happens is when you glass bead it, you're basically glass beading the rubber and the rim, and as long as it's in decent shape on the outside, it's going to look almost brand new when you're finished.
16:18We've been busting hump on this auction, and everything's coming together.
16:24In my business, you've got to try things like this to keep growing.
16:27But you can't let that affect the other projects going on.
16:31The signal cannon we've been working on is ready to go, so now we're on our way to hopefully blow the customer away.
16:38I wanted to be able to take this cannon somewhere where we can be loud and not cause any disturbance to anybody but the fish.
16:45I mean, here we are up at the Kimbell's Boy Scout Ranch, and it's going to be awesome firing Rich's cannon off.
16:50This is a nice place out here to shoot off a gun, huh?
16:52There we go.
16:53It's a cool place.
16:54I want to go swimming.
16:55One of my biggest concerns is safety.
16:57So I brought in two of the best guys I know of to make sure that this thing fires off safely.
17:02Hey, Rich.
17:03How you doing?
17:04Good seeing you, gang.
17:05Good to see you, man.
17:06You got yourself a little escort down here.
17:07I know.
17:08Isn't that nice?
17:09Rick called me up today to come out here to pick up my signal cannon.
17:13I want you to envision your grandfather and see him shooting this off for the Maid of the Miss parade thing.
17:18You know?
17:19Oh, awesome.
17:20Big deal.
17:21Okay?
17:22All right.
17:23Here we go, Bradley.
17:24One, two, three.
17:25Oh, man.
17:26Look at that thing.
17:27What do you think?
17:28That is just awesome.
17:29When I saw the cannon for the first time, I was absolutely blown away.
17:31The detail.
17:32He really took his time.
17:33He got it to look better than new.
17:35What we ended up doing, you remember the wheels came off.
17:38We had to take them off.
17:39One of the things that we did, we machined the caps where they go right over top of them nice and tight.
17:43These are the good look.
17:44Right?
17:45We rejuvenated all the tires.
17:46We tried to blast these as much as we could to get as much rust out as we could.
17:50Inside here where everything was bolted together, everything was rusted.
17:53I mean, really, really bad.
17:54The barrel itself, we sanded this just a little bit more than we did the other parts to where, you know, we wanted it to sort of stand out a little bit.
18:02Oh, that's cool.
18:03All right, Rich, I'm going to have these guys take over and load this thing and get this show on the road.
18:07All right, let's go.
18:08Let's do it.
18:09You're going to get your cartridge, get it into the chamber, seat it fully, and get your breech block.
18:15Screw it all the way in.
18:18Keep the safety in place.
18:20When you're ready to fire, slide the safety out.
18:23We're live.
18:24Yeah.
18:25Ready to go.
18:26Let's go.
18:27You ready?
18:28Three, two, one.
18:31Fire in the hole!
18:34Yeah!
18:35That's sweet.
18:36That's awesome.
18:37Not for you?
18:38Let's do it again.
18:39Setting off that cannon was just an experience that I just...
18:46There's no words for it.
18:48It was just fantastic.
18:50Three, two, one!
18:52That's what I'm talking about.
18:53That was awesome.
18:54That's good.
18:55Today is our first auction here at the shop, so we have no idea if it's really going to make us money.
19:06So why should I drop cash on a professional when I got two guys ready and willing to do it for nothing?
19:12Did you find yourself something to eat?
19:14Yep.
19:15All right.
19:16You're going to need your strength today for what you're about to do.
19:19Brett Lee?
19:20Yeah?
19:21You're the auctioneer.
19:22Oh, wow.
19:23Okay.
19:24Really?
19:25You're it.
19:26I'm picking Brett Lee because I really think it might be his time to shine here at the shop.
19:30Man, I don't make three times the money for Rick on this.
19:33If Brett Lee drops the ball, Rick better not come crying at me.
19:36There's a lot of stuff out there I do not want to lose any money, so don't biff this up.
19:42Okay?
19:43All right.
19:44All right?
19:45So Rick tells me that I'm going to be the auctioneer, and I feel the pressure, let me tell you.
19:50I mean, I thought for sure Rick was going to pick Ron, but just in case, I got this sweet jacket.
19:55Hey, everybody!
19:57Hey!
19:58Holy smokes!
19:59Come on in.
20:00Find a scene.
20:01We rounded up our best clients and even found some new ones.
20:04It's the perfect crowd to really see if having an auctioneer will help business.
20:09All right, guys.
20:11So we're going to start the auction off with the early model 1950s Bendo 72, nice and cold.

20:28You're going to do it.
20:29It's great.
20:30Six.
20:31Come on.
20:32Six and a half.
20:33Six, six, six, six.

20:35Do I hear seven?
20:36Seven in the front.
20:37Seven in the front.
20:38Going once.
20:39Going twice.
20:40Solved to you.
20:41You got it.
20:42All right.
20:43Coca-Cola not included.
20:44There we go.
20:45Mill's 1930s swap machine.
20:46So we're in the middle of the auction.
20:48Everyone's bidding.
20:49I mean, numbers just flying out of my mouth.
20:51I mean, I had to just kind of take a second, bring it back down.
20:55My heart was going.
20:56But then we kept going.
20:57Then we kept going with numbers.
20:58I mean, it was cool.
20:59It was fun.
21:00$5,500.
21:01You got it.
21:02Do I hear $6,000?

21:32Sold.
21:33You got it.
21:34For $12,000 to the gentleman in the back.
21:37This thing was such a success.
21:40For our first auction, Rally, I think you did a great job.
21:43I think we all, as a team, did pretty good.
21:46I liked how they did it against each other.
21:47Yeah, they were in the crowd.
21:48That was good.
21:49They were trying to get everyone to bid.
21:50Yeah, yeah.
21:51I'm ready to plan our next one.
21:52And it's going to be bigger and better every time.
