00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02Looking for a cooler that I convert into a hot dog cart.
00:05Into a hot dog cart?
00:06A Dodger dog hot dog cart.
00:08Oh, that's cool.
00:09One of the biggest things that we've
00:10got to deal with right now is health code.
00:12The fridge rate should be 41.
00:1441.
00:14You'll need 50-foot candles of light.
00:16If it's open food, then we need to put a food shield over it.
00:19I don't know.
00:19This project's so much bigger than I anticipated.
00:22I want to introduce you to Tommy Lasorda.
00:23Hey, Rick, how are you?
00:25It's an honor.
00:25We've come a long way.
00:27This thing better be good.
00:28That's all I'm telling you.
00:29That's a rating point.
00:30No pressure.
00:31I know.
00:32Oh, my God.
00:34Look at a man's workbench.
00:37You see his passions.
00:39His work's in progress.
00:43The things that drive him crazy.
00:48Projects that?
00:49You get the point.
00:51Anyway, every workbench tells a story.
00:54And this is ours.
00:56American Restoration.
01:00I got a call from Farmer John, the company that makes the famous Dodger dog they serve at Dodger Stadium.
01:06These hot dogs are so popular, they actually license the casino just east of L.A. to sell them.
01:12So I'm meeting with one of their reps to talk about a potential project to help boost their hot dog
01:17sales at the casino.
01:19This is basically our line of coolers.
01:20And we can convert this into anything that you sort of want to do, you know, to be able to
01:25sell hot dogs, be able to refrigerate stuff.
01:27Just give me a little bit more idea of exactly what you're looking for.
01:30This casino is one of the few places you can get an actual Dodger dog outside of Dodger Stadium.
01:35Okay.
01:35So I need to serve and prepare hot dogs, drinks, and condiments, and the whole baseball experience inside the casino.
01:41Doing a big project for a casino could help open up some doors for some more commercial work.
01:45So I'm going to do everything I can to make sure we nail this project.
01:49This has to be top-notch all the way.
01:52All right, well, that's the only way I put them out, so that should be no problem.
01:56A bit of a challenge, but no problem.
01:57Since the Dodgers have been around since the 60s and the Dodger Dog's been around just as long, I'd like
02:01to have that retro feel to it.
02:03Okay, I think we should probably look at a couple more.
02:06This one here, it's a little too early.
02:08It basically is a 1949.
02:09I mean, it was before the Dodgers even moved, to be quite honest.
02:13So let me show you this other one down here.
02:15It might be a little better.
02:17I mean, this one here, although it's full of junk, this is made in 1958.
02:21So this is more of a 60s-themed cooler.
02:23So this is a perfect piece.
02:25I think it's great.
02:26I like that Rick picked out a cooler that was made right around the same time that the Dodgers came
02:30to Los Angeles.
02:31But it looks like it's been out of commission for a long time.
02:33So Rick has a lot of work cut out for him to make sure it's up and running, and it
02:36looks great.
02:37How many hot dogs do they sell in a day?
02:40They sell a couple hundred hot dogs a day down there.
02:42Okay.
02:42And we'd like to put that number even more.
02:44Right.
02:44So I need to make sure that I can hold out 200 hot dogs in here, okay?
02:48200 buns.
02:49And with every hot dog, you have to have something to drink.
02:52That's right.
02:53So I need to be able to make that big enough for them.
02:56And also, we need to have the attendant be able to stand on this side and help out the customer
02:59on the other side.
03:00Okay.
03:01What I'm thinking about doing is somehow we'll cut into this side so you can actually load from here.
03:06So I've got to figure that out.
03:08And then on top, I want to do this thing up to when they walk up to it.
03:11I mean, it's not just the logos you've got around the side.
03:14It's got baseball.
03:17It's got baseball road all over, bottom line, okay?
03:19I like that.
03:20I mean, when I was a kid, my first hot dog ever, ever in my life was from the Dodger
03:25Stadium.
03:26And it's a very cool family sport.
03:28Everybody gets into it.
03:29It just brings back such great, great memories with me and my dad and the family would all go.
03:33It's just, it was a fun time.
03:34So I want to really do this up.
03:36And I just want to make sure that everything I'm saying is good with you.
03:40I like your ideas.
03:41I really hope you can make this happen for us.
03:42Awesome.
03:43Cool.
03:44This is going to be a great project.
03:45I can't wait to start on this.
03:46I can't wait.
03:51Hey, Kyle.
03:52Hey, Rick.
03:54Oh, it looks good.
03:55Lid fits great.
03:56Yeah, I know.
03:56Those are a pain in the butt, huh?
03:58Before we start converting that big old cooler into a hot dog vendor,
04:01we just finished restoring a much smaller one that needs final inspection before we ship it out to the customer.
04:08This is like a 1949 picnic cooler for Coke.
04:11They made them in all kinds of models, too.
04:12They made a little small one.
04:14It's called a six-pack cooler.
04:15They made the airline coolers.
04:17They're really long.
04:18And this thing here is probably the most popular because it held the most.
04:22When it came in, it was in pretty bad shape.
04:24It was just beat up and dented up.
04:26And it's not that easy to do.
04:28And to make them look like this, it just looks so much better.
04:31I mean, it's just absolutely beautiful.
04:32You know, back in the day, a family would go on a picnic, you know?
04:36They'd put their sodas in there.
04:38You'd have a tray in the top, and the sandwiches would go in there.
04:41They'd get in their old 55 Chevy and drive down the road to go picnicking with the whole family.
04:47I mean, that was so cool.
04:48That was their fun.
04:49That was their entertainment, going on picnics and stuff.
04:51Now we have so many different things we can do.
04:53Sort of took away from the family.
04:55So this is a cool little icon.
04:57That's awesome.
04:58All right, let's get this thing totally wiped down.
05:00Okay.
05:01You got it.
05:02All right, good job, Kyle.
05:03It looks fantastic.
05:03Yeah, it does.
05:11Hey, Rick.
05:12What's going on with this monster?
05:13This thing's big.
05:14I mean, I can get in and go to sleep and take a nap.
05:16No one ever knows.
05:17This thing needs to be made into a hot dog cart, basically.
05:21Nice.
05:21It's going to go in the middle of San Manuel Casino, so they need to, you know, expand their sales
05:26of Dodger dogs.
05:27So that's what this piece is supposed to do.
05:30So this is going in a casino?
05:31Yeah.
05:32With all the lights, all the slot machines?
05:33Yeah.
05:33So this has to stand out more than that.
05:35That's right.
05:36This thing needs to pop.
05:37You need to be able to walk into the casino, see this machine that sells Dodger dogs, and people need
05:43to run over and buy from this thing.
05:45I'm really excited about the chance to do this project.
05:48I was born and raised in California, and the Dodgers are my favorite team.
05:52So digging my creative teeth into this is going to be fun.
05:55What I want to do from about here to here is do the rolled chrome, all this tube, all rolled
06:03chrome coming around.
06:04Too bad you couldn't do a playing field on the roll.
06:07Yeah.
06:07Yeah, yeah.
06:08That'd be cool.
06:09Instead of doing the arch, we could do a diamond.
06:12I like that even better.
06:14The infield.
06:15Yeah.
06:16We could do the diamond shape with a bat and a ball up on top of that.
06:19I love it.
06:20Right?
06:20Something different.
06:22One of the biggest things that we've got to deal with right now is health code.
06:26Homeowner compared to commercial, huge difference.
06:29They want every corner rounded.
06:31You can't have any sharp edges on anything.
06:33The interior has to be stainless.
06:36It can no longer be galvanized.
06:37So we're basically going to have to bring someone in to go through all the health codes before we, you
06:42know, go too far.
06:43Okay?
06:43But we can definitely take it apart.
06:45So here's what I need.
06:47Kyle, go get Cowboy.
06:48Start cleaning this thing all the way out and start ripping it apart all the way down to the liner.
06:53Okay?
06:53Okay.
06:53All right, guys.
06:54Let's get started.
06:55Go team.
06:56Go team.
07:03Run!
07:04Yeah.
07:05What's up, bro?
07:05I got to run for you.
07:06We're building this hot dog cart, and it's going to be themed after the Dodger dogs.
07:11For the actual Dodger dogs?
07:12Yeah.
07:12Yeah.
07:12I was the king of eating Dodger dogs.
07:14Yeah, and you got sick on six of them.
07:16I remember.
07:16Yeah, you overate all the time.
07:18My brother doesn't know what he's talking about.
07:20Nobody can down a dog like Ron Dale.
07:22I never got sick, man.
07:24Dude, you were just too young to remember.
07:26You did.
07:26You got sick all the time.
07:28I need this stuff right away, though, okay?
07:30Because I got to get this thing done.
07:32All right.
07:32That's what I need.
07:33Go get it.
07:33All right?
07:34Hurry it up.
07:34I can eat more than anybody at the shop.
07:36No problem.
07:38You've told me, like, 20 different things I got to do that this cooler doesn't have.
07:42I mean, we barely scratched the surface of what you might need to do to make this a piece of
07:47food equipment.
07:48Holy ****.
07:49I just, I don't know.
07:50This project's so much bigger than I anticipated.
08:00We're transforming an old cooler into a baseball-themed hot dog cart.
08:04And Kyle and Cowboy just finished taking it apart.
08:08This cart is going to be used to sell hot dogs to the public, so everything has to be up
08:13to code.
08:13And since this is new territory for me, I called in a certified health inspector to make sure this design
08:19is going to work.
08:21It's kind of rough.
08:23This is nothing.
08:25I thought I was going to be looking at a hot dog cart, but...
08:27Right now, it's just a cooler, and the customer wants to be able to sell hot dogs out of it
08:31in a casino.
08:32One of my problems is, is I do these a lot for private parties, but I don't do very many
08:37commercially.
08:38So I need to know from you what I can and can't do, but at the same time, I want
08:42to sort of tell you what I want to do.
08:44Okay.
08:44Okay?
08:44When Rick told me he was going to convert this Coke cooler to a hot dog cart, the first thing
08:49I thought was,
08:50I just don't know how he's got so much work to do, he's going to have to start from scratch.
08:54On the top, part of me wants to do it in wood.
08:58Can you mix the wood countertop with...
09:00Generally not.
09:01Okay.
09:02You use wood, even if it's sealed, it can be forced, it can be hit by the knife, you've got
09:06cuts in it.
09:07So that it doesn't get contaminants or bacteria or anything like that.
09:10Right.
09:10How about lights on the inside?
09:12You'll need 50-foot candles of light.
09:15So you have to have the light?
09:16You have to have the light.
09:17Oh, and it was 50-candles?
09:1950-foot candles.
09:20Huh.
09:20Okay.
09:21Your hot dogs...
09:22Yes.
09:23...need to be at least 135 or above.
09:25135 degrees.
09:26Right.
09:26And if you buy a certified unit, it'll do it.
09:29Okay.
09:29The refrigerator should be 41 or below.
09:32You might even want to drop in an approved cooler inside of this unit.
09:35Oh.
09:36What you need to look for is third-party sanitation certification.
09:41The trick is finding equipment that fits.
09:43Right.
09:44Right.
09:45This is a lot of work.
09:46This is, you know, you've told me like 20 different things I got to do that this cooler doesn't have.
09:51I mean...
09:52Yeah, we barely scratched the surface of what you might need to do to make this a piece of food
09:56equipment.
09:57Holy...
09:57I just, I don't know.
09:59This project's so much bigger than I anticipated.
10:01They did bring the California Cal Code for Health so that, you know, you would have the details as the
10:06physical requirements are for the cart.
10:09I didn't know there was going to be so many hoops to jump through with the health code rules.
10:13But at least now we have the info we need to do it right the first time so we don't
10:18have to redo it.
10:19Thank you very much.
10:19I appreciate it.
10:20Come on in.
10:21I'll show you.
10:21Great.
10:21Okay?
10:28All right.
10:29All right.
10:29Keep going.
10:31Hey, Dad.
10:31Yeah.
10:32I just got off the phone with the people for the Dodger dog cart.
10:35Yeah.
10:36And they were telling me they're working on getting some players in, trying to get some people there for the
10:39reveal.
10:40Cool.
10:40And they were telling me they for sure have one guy, Tommy Lasordo or something.
10:43Tommy Lasordo?
10:44You know who Tommy Lasordo is?
10:45No.
10:46He's like the greatest manager of all.
10:48I mean, he's in the Hall of Fame.
10:49He used to be the manager for the Dodgers.
10:52Oh, no.
10:52And he's a legend.
10:53He's just a legend.
10:54And you're telling me that he's going to be there?
10:56Yeah.
10:56Apparently he's going to be inspecting it on behalf of the Dodgers.
10:58Wow.
10:59That's going to be a little intimidating.
11:01An honor, but at the same time, very intimidating.
11:03He was very strict.
11:04And he was very good at what he did.
11:06And he knows the Dodgers inside and out.
11:09So this piece has to hit it right on.
11:11We've got to hit it hard.
11:13Was that a baseball reference?
11:14Yeah.
11:15Yeah.
11:15Well, thanks.
11:16Thanks.
11:17All right.
11:17Let me know if I can help.
11:18All right.
11:19Yeah.
11:20Holy moly.
11:21As if I need any more pressure.
11:24Transforming a soda cooler into a hot dog cart is a huge undertaking.
11:28So I got all hands on deck for this project.
11:31Tyler's carving out some new insulation for the cooler section.
11:35And then he's going to help Kyle cut out rear access panels on the unit so our customer can warm
11:40the food and restock supplies from behind.
11:43Dave is fabricating a steel support frame that's going to hold a brand new steamer in place to warm up
11:48the hot dogs and the rolls.
11:50And I made sure the steamer is fully certified so it's all up to code.
11:55This piece is finally starting to take shape, but we still have a long way to go.
12:00Rick!
12:01Bradley, don't eat any.
12:02All right?
12:03I'm trying to prove a point to my brother.
12:04What are you doing?
12:05Got some dogs going on.
12:07All right?
12:07We got a little contest going on over here.
12:09A contest?
12:10I want some hot dogs.
12:11Earlier, my older brother was trying to make like I used to get sick while eating hot dogs back in
12:16the day.
12:17I could polish off like 12 of them.
12:18Yeah, and you got sick on six of them.
12:20I never got sick, man.
12:21I can take a lot of abuse, but I will not be remembered as a guy that can't down a
12:26dog with the best of them.
12:2820 bucks to get out.
12:28It says I can eat more than any of you.
12:31I got 20.
12:32Okay?
12:34Oh, Kyle's making it rain.
12:35Start digging, brother.
12:36It's lunch.
12:37You guys do what you got to do, but I got to go.
12:40I got some time.
12:41We got ourselves a judge.
12:42I got five minutes on the clock.
12:44It's three, two, go.
12:48Come on, Ron.
12:50Ew.
12:51Yes, Kyle.
12:53You just dipped in your water.
12:55Come on, Kyle.
12:55That was a strategy.
12:57All right.
12:58Put a rock on.
12:59Ron, quit dying.
13:00If you barfed, you're automatically back to zero.
13:02Thanks, Mark.
13:03That was disgusting.
13:04Come on.
13:08This might be the best decision I make all year to judge this competition.
13:11Cowboy's bitching, Brett Lee's cheating, and Ron, it sounds like he's just dying.
13:17All right, there's 10 seconds left.
13:19You ready?
13:19Between Ron and Kyle.
13:20Come on, Kyle.
13:21Ron, he's got one bite.
13:24Duh!
13:25I got to give that to Ron.
13:26Oh, he's got one bite.
13:28Oh, he's got to hold it down for two damn minutes.
13:32Oh, this is coming out instantly.
13:38On projects like this, there's always tons of parts that we have to create from scratch.
13:43So Tyler and I are making a custom holder for all the condiment containers.
13:47So just run that line right there, okay?
13:50Make them straight.
13:52It'll be fine.
13:53The plasma cutter can slice through this metal in no time.
13:56And Tyler's doing a beautiful job on the cuts.
13:58I don't get a chance to work side by side with him that often.
14:02But seeing him in action like this really makes me proud of how far he's come over the years.
14:08Look at that one.
14:10It's a good one.
14:11We're getting better.
14:12That one's good.
14:16I got a lot of bases to cover with this hot dog cart.
14:19It has to function perfectly, be up to code, and look amazing.
14:23But I've also got Tommy Lasorda inspecting it on behalf of the Dodgers.
14:27So I called in someone to make sure that it's 100% historically accurate.
14:31Hey, babe.
14:31Yeah.
14:32Mark from the Dodgers is here.
14:33Oh, hey.
14:34Mark, good to meet you.
14:35Very nice to meet you.
14:36I've been the team historian for the L.A. Dodgers since 2002.
14:39When it comes to the L.A. Dodgers or the Brooklyn Dodgers, I'm the guy.
14:43All right, Mark.
14:44So the reason why I called you, we need to put on Dodger logos on the end.
14:48That's why I needed your help.
14:49I needed to know exactly what the logo looked like back in the 60s, basically.
14:54Our Dodger media guide has a whole list of our history throughout the years.
14:59Right.
14:59And in the early days, it was just Brooklyn.
15:02Right.
15:02A lot of people wondered, too, where does the phrase Dodgers come from?
15:05Right.
15:05Well, back in Brooklyn, they had all these streetcars.
15:08And one of the nicknames for the fans and the residents was Trolley Dodgers.
15:12Okay.
15:12So our great and glorious nickname basically means don't get hit by the train.
15:16Get out of the way.
15:16Exactly.
15:17That's where it came from.
15:18But we didn't start to officially call ourselves the Dodgers until 1932.
15:22And then five years later, then we put it on the uniform.
15:26Gotcha.
15:26And this is the script.
15:28And based on the 1938 uniform, this hasn't changed, but we incorporate the dog.
15:33And then we have the flourish with the S to put it all together like one big giant uniform
15:38on the front.
15:38Oh, okay.
15:39But the generic Dodger script has been the same since 1938.
15:42Oh, wow.
15:43That's really cool.
15:44Dodgers came to L.A. in like 50, 58?
15:46We started in 1958 at the Coliseum and we played four years there.
15:49Dodger Stadium opened in 1962 and the origin of the hot dog, the person that was in charge
15:55of the stadium restaurants, Thomas Arthur, he remembered the Coney Island days of the
16:00footlong Frank.
16:01Oh, yeah.
16:01And so he thought, well, let's call them footlongs.
16:03And after a couple weeks, they sort of gave him grief and said, hey, they're not really
16:07that long.
16:08And so he thought, well, how about Dodger hot dog?
16:12He cut it.
16:13Dodger dog.
16:13And just made it up off the top of his head.
16:16And now it's the famous ballpark cuisine.
16:18You got your peanuts and crackers, but if you're in Los Angeles, Dodger dogs.
16:23Well, thank you very much.
16:24I really appreciate you bringing this.
16:26This is perfect.
16:27Can I borrow this?
16:27Oh, you can have it.
16:28Awesome.
16:29Awesome.
16:30Big chapter on Tommy Lasorda.
16:31Make sure you read that.
16:32I'll read that first.
16:35I'm really under the gun to get this Dodger dog cart finished, so Ted and I are getting
16:39started on the artwork right away.
16:41We worked all the team logos and graphics into the overall design, and now it's his turn
16:46up and back.
16:47We matched the classic Dodger blue, and the color scheme that we came up with is really
16:51going to pop at the casino.
16:53We're also recreating the original Dodger's font on all four sides, so no matter where
16:58you are in the casino, you'll know exactly where to go to get your Dodger dogs.
17:04When we get items that are missing pieces of original etched glass, we replace them and
17:09recreate the etched artwork for authenticity.
17:11Which of these is the best way to get an even etching in a piece of glass?
17:23The answer is C, glass bead blasting.
17:38First, we mark out the areas that we don't want to be etched with masking tape or duct
17:42tape.
17:43Then, working with medium grit glass beads, we blast the exposed areas.
17:49Now that it's done, all you have to do is take off the tape and reveal a perfectly etched
17:54piece of glass.
17:55As you can see here, you've got nice sharp edges, and where you blast it, it's nice and
17:59rough.
17:59It's perfectly done.
18:04It's the bottom of the ninth, and we're almost finished with this epic Dodger dog hot dog
18:08cart we've all been working on.
18:10Our big showpiece concept, shaped like a baseball diamond, just got back from chroming, and Ted's
18:16been working like crazy on a baseball and bat that's going to mount on top of it.
18:21Now, we just got to get all these pieces together, and I'll be ready to get on the road to
18:25California.
18:28What are you doing?
18:29What?
18:30You ate too many hot dogs, didn't you?
18:32All right, well, I'm going down to deliver the Dodger dog machine, and Tommy Lasorda's
18:37going to be there.
18:37You want to go?
18:38No.
18:39Uh-uh.
18:40All right, well, I'm leaving.
18:41I mean, that's the last thing I need is for him to be yakking in my truck, all right?
18:46It's too bad that Ron can't come, but I've got to haul this cart all the way to California
18:51in order to make our deadline.
18:53And Tommy Lasorda is not known for being patient.
18:57Hey, Rick.
18:58Hey.
18:58How are we doing?
18:59Good, Joe.
18:59Good to see you again.
19:00Good to see you.
19:01Yeah.
19:01Want to introduce you to Tommy Lasorda?
19:02Hey, Rick.
19:03How are you?
19:04It's an honor.
19:05This is Steve, the executive director here at San Manuel Casino.
19:07Great to meet you, Steve.
19:08Thanks.
19:09We've come a long way.
19:10This thing better be good.
19:11That's all I'm telling you.
19:12That's a rating point.
19:14Rick's got to be under the gun right now.
19:17You're like a guy pitching a big game.
19:19Yeah, that's exactly how I feel right now.
19:22There's a lot of pressure on me, especially when Tommy Lasorda, I mean, he's a legend.
19:27He knows everything about the Dodgers.
19:30If there's one little thing wrong with this, Tommy's going to be the first one to point it
19:34out, and I do not want that to happen.
19:37Wow.
19:37Check it out.
19:38Oh, this is a rating.
19:40This is a rating.
19:42Look at this thing.
19:43This thing is amazing.
19:45When I first saw the Dodger card, I was very, very surprised.
19:49Oh, it's beautiful.
19:50It's really great.
19:51The whole thing was great.
19:52It was very impressive to me.
19:54This is great.
19:55I'll tell you that.
19:56You got the Dodger dog right here.
19:57You got the baseball, the baseball bat.
19:59You got everything in here, Rick.
20:00It's amazing.
20:00What made you decide to come up with this thing?
20:03That gentleman right there.
20:05This guy?
20:05I pushed him and he delivered.
20:06Look at this.
20:07It was beautiful.
20:08This is about a 1960 vendor that used to be inside of a mom and pop store.
20:12And you'd roll it up and you'd reach in and you'd grab your soda.
20:15That's all it was.
20:16But he wanted to be able to make it into a hot dog cart.
20:19Hot dog stand.
20:19But I wanted to make this into a baseball diamond.
20:22So this is all, you know, stainless steel tubing.
20:25We had to weld together like that.
20:26I want to put bases.
20:28This second base is actually the motor inside there.
20:30Allows the ball to turn.
20:31This is amazing.
20:34You had a great imagination.
20:35We had to start all over again with basically, you know, a shell.
20:39Gutted everything out of here because it was sort of set up for just refrigeration.
20:42So we put the steamer in that end.
20:45Does it keep the hot dogs warm in there?
20:46Yeah.
20:47That one over there is a warmer and on the back of it's got a place for the buns.
20:51And, of course, here's all drinks.
20:52And then that's your condiments right there.
20:54This is something special, without a doubt.
20:57You can always leave the slot machines to come and get yourself a hot dog.
21:01That's right.
21:02It was a huge honor to get a thumbs up on my work from Tommy Lasorda.
21:07And then on top of that, they brought in a couple of former Dodgers, Paul LaDuca and Ron Say.
21:12All right, so you guys want a hot dog?
21:14Yeah.
21:14Everybody loves Dodger dogs, right?
21:16I like what I saw.
21:18A lot of people are going to enjoy it, too.
21:20This cart is amazing.
21:22It's going to sell a lot of hot dogs for us.
21:23It looks perfect, and it's going to stand out in this casino.
21:27What do you think, Tommy?
21:28Great.
21:29I like it.
21:30They all seemed to love it.
21:32They were having a good time.
21:33But Tommy, he was really digging in.
21:36Great Dodger dogs.
21:37Wow.
21:40Wow.
21:41Wow.
21:43Wow.
