00:00American Restoration has shipped in a 1940s good humor ice cream bicycle.
00:05I got a guy that wants to buy it. This one's all about the money.
00:08So what do you think?
00:09There's a whole crap load of work.
00:11Oh, man, that is the coolest radio I've ever seen.
00:15This has been in the family for a pretty long time.
00:17I've seen it my whole life and I've never heard it played once.
00:20Like when your grandparents listen to it, I want that same sound.
00:23Hey, Ron, have you seen our new sign?
00:25Employees must wear proper shoes at all times.
00:28This sucks.
00:30Remember back in the day when things were made by hand
00:33and people took pride in their work?
00:36My name's Rick Dale and I bring these things back to life.
00:40Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:44There's no owner's manual for what we do,
00:47but there's no job we can't handle.
00:58Hey, where's Richard Dale at?
01:01Is that Big Mike? I hear Big Mike.
01:03Hey, Rick.
01:04What's going on, bud?
01:05I liked it. How you been?
01:06Good, good. Did you bring something?
01:07I shipped something out here.
01:08You shipped something?
01:09Really cool item.
01:10Okay. We're going to have to ask Cowboy.
01:12Big Mike is a repeat customer that has such a knack for finding unique items.
01:17So I can't wait to see what he shipped to me today.
01:19There it be.
01:20Wow. Let's undo it.
01:21Came down to Rick's restoration today because I shipped in a 1940s Good Humor ice cream bicycle.
01:27Oh, man. Those are so cool.
01:30I thought, I don't want to see this thing go to a scrap pile.
01:32I want to see it get restored and reused. It's just so cool.
01:36Where'd you get it?
01:37I got it from a guy in Akron, Ohio.
01:39It's a 1949 Good Humor bicycle.
01:42Wow. These bells, that's what signified the Good Humor man's coming.
01:46And they wore all white. They had a hat.
01:49He had to tip his hat to a woman, and he had to salute soldiers.
01:53And they would drive trucks around, but they couldn't get everywhere with the trucks.
01:56Yeah.
01:57So they manufactured these.
01:59And this was a utility bicycle.
02:01It's all insulated.
02:02You open it up.
02:03It's put an ice cream in there.
02:04His empire took off.
02:06So what are you going to do with this?
02:08Are you going to ride around and deliver ice cream now?
02:09No.
02:10I got a guy that wants to buy it.
02:11He's got an amusement park in Pennsylvania.
02:12Ah.
02:13And they're going to actually use this in the amusement park.
02:15Okay.
02:16This one's all about the money.
02:17I want it to look like it's frozen in time.
02:19Yeah.
02:20Okay.
02:21There's a whole crap load of work.
02:22Whole crap load.
02:23Yeah.
02:24We're going to have to pound out all this steel.
02:25This especially.
02:26I mean, this is the signature of Good Humor, so we've got to deal with that.
02:29This wheel here is a big issue.
02:31I've got to figure out if I can pound it out.
02:33I may waste time.
02:34Pound that out, then coming to find out that it won't hold air.
02:36And then the rest of it is just body work.
02:38Body work, body work.
02:39I bet I have 50, 60 hours.
02:42I'm thinking I'm going to be right around, I'd say 6,500.
02:48How do you deal with that?
02:536,500?
02:54Let's do it.
02:55All right, cool.
02:56I trust you with it.
02:57You've done great in the past.
02:58Come on.
02:59Let's go in the office.
03:00We'll take care of the paperwork like usual.
03:01Awesome.
03:02The buyer doesn't want to spend a lot of money on this, but it is a really cool item, and
03:07I think when they see it, the cost will justify itself.
03:12Ice cream!
03:17Come get your ice cream!
03:20Open it up and see if there's anything in there.
03:21No, just rust.
03:22Oh, that's great.
03:23Bretley and I are tearing down all the pieces of the ice cream.
03:28Oh, that's great.
03:29Bretley and I are tearing down this ice cream bike that we're restoring for one of our
03:32regular customers.
03:33This thing's actually pretty complicated, and it's really beat up.
03:36It has leaf springs, too?
03:37Yeah, it's got a dropped I-beam the whole nine.
03:39That's pretty cool.
03:40Let's take these wheels off so it stops rolling around.
03:43That's what I'm going to do.
03:44All right, let's get the big bolts off.
03:50That's what I'm talking about, Dave.
03:58What's with the sign, Rick?
04:01Well, everybody from now on needs to be wearing the right shoes, okay?
04:05Proper shoes.
04:06Because we work around heavy equipment and power tools, we have to protect our feet.
04:11What about Ron?
04:13Well, Ron needs to wear the right shoes, too.
04:16I've never seen Ron wear shoes.
04:18Well, he needs to start wearing shoes now.
04:20Okay.
04:21Good luck with that.
04:34Excuse me.
04:35I'm looking for Rick.
04:36I'll go see if I can find any way right here.
04:38Okay.
04:39I'm here at Rick's Restoration today to get my Edward of Kent 1920s radio restored.
04:44Hey, how are you doing?
04:45All right, Pat Matthews.
04:46How are you?
04:47Pat, good to meet you.
04:48I have a radio that I want you to see.
04:50Yeah?
04:51Let's go see it.
04:52I can't wait.
04:53It's been in the family approximately 60, 80 years, and it really has a sentimental value
04:56to me.
04:57Oh, man.
04:58That is the coolest radio I've ever seen.
05:01So that's the speaker?
05:02Yeah.
05:03This is pretty wild.
05:04Atwater Kent.
05:05This guy here was a guru of radios.
05:07Atwater Kent started in the teens, right in that era.
05:10And when he started doing the radio, it was the largest selling radio of any kind.
05:13Really?
05:14And could you just imagine?
05:15Listen to these things, spark out stuff, news and different things.
05:19This is a big deal.
05:20So why are you wanting to restore it?
05:22This has been in the family for a pretty long time.
05:24I've seen it my whole life, and I've never heard it played once.
05:27And I would really like to sit down and listen to something on a radio that my grandparents
05:32listened to.
05:33Cool.
05:34This is what my business is all about, a chance to reconnect with the past.
05:38If we can get this thing working, he'll be able to listen to the radio through the same
05:41device that his family did back in the past.
05:44All right, so how are you wanting to see this thing getting finished?
05:47Well, I'd like to get it done as if it just came out of the factory.
05:51But it seems somewhere along the line something got into the inside of it.
05:56So it's really not in the best of shape.
05:58Oh, yeah, yeah.
05:59I see some issues with the tubes.
06:00And down here, it looks like you got some kind of mice or rats.
06:04They're really tough on wires, so there's no telling what's going on underneath there.
06:08This in here has capacitors in it.
06:10They put tar over top of all the capacitors.
06:13Some of the capacitors are going to be good.
06:15Some of the capacitors are going to be bad.
06:16That's usually what goes.
06:18What's it going to be to have this done way or more?
06:20Yeah, I mean, first of all, we're going to have to take it apart.
06:22And then we're going to strip it.
06:23The best part of it, I can't see any body work.
06:26I can't see a dent.
06:28So that's going to save money.
06:29But then the internals, that's going to be quite a bit of time.
06:32Going through the inside, making that all work, and then totally finished all looking
06:36pretty again.
06:37I'm looking at probably $1,100.
06:43You know, let's get it done.
06:48All right, cool.
06:49Awesome.
06:51Thank you very much.
06:52Come on in.
06:53We'll do some paperwork.
06:54$1,100.
06:55That was a little above my price range.
06:57But for me to hear this would take me back to those memories of my grandparents.
07:02Shoes from $399.
07:03Your dad can kiss my ass if he thinks I'm going to spend a lot of money on shoes.
07:07Dude, this is why I don't wear shoes.
07:09Look at all.
07:10What?
07:11He wears shoes.
07:12There it is.
07:14Wow.
07:15That is phenomenal.
07:16This was my grandparents' radio.
07:18I'm really excited to hear this thing for the first time.
07:21I don't know.
07:32She's moving.
07:33I see it.
07:34Get it?
07:35Nice.
07:36The most challenging part of the Atwater Kent radio project is getting it back into working
07:41condition.
07:42So Kyle and I are taking out the guts of this thing to see what we're up against.
07:45I can't believe they chewed the hell out of that wiring.
07:48Those rats or mice will chew that wire to make nests.
07:51If you look back in here, that's what we got to deal with.
07:55Oh, yeah.
07:56These are bad.
07:57Okay?
07:58These are always bad.
07:59We're going to have to take apart the whole assembly and replace a lot of the wiring and
08:03tubes.
08:04In the meantime, I'm having Ted trace the artwork on the casing so I can blast it.
08:08You can go ahead and bag it up.
08:10I'm going to take this to Ted.
08:11I want to get this started.
08:12All right?
08:13Yes, sir.
08:14Get that out of the way.
08:15Damn rats.
08:23How's it going, guys?
08:24I'm all right.
08:25We need to make some fenders that mount to the body itself.
08:28Like this.
08:29Okay.
08:30But I need to know some ideas.
08:31I got an idea.
08:32Yeah, come here.
08:33Look at something I whipped up a long time ago.
08:35Our goal is to always make restorations as authentic as possible.
08:40When something's missing pieces, like the Good Humor Bike's fenders, we start looking for
08:44vintage parts.
08:45When they aren't available, that's when we start fabricating them.
08:48And that's when I really rely on guys like Dave.
08:51I made this on a shrinker stretcher.
08:53If we did another one where it's got a 90 this way and a reverse 90, we can shrink one
08:56side and stretch the other side and maybe give you like a boat trailer fender.
09:00Wow, that's pretty cool.
09:01So that just stretch the metal like that?
09:03Uh-huh.
09:04If you can get one of those, yeah, to where we get that arch and then we can mount it,
09:08it'll look very cool.
09:09Yeah, let's go ahead and try that.
09:11Okay.
09:12To make these fenders, I'm gonna use a flat piece of metal, then I'm gonna put two 90-degree
09:16brakes in it and then start bending it from there.
09:19Once I put the bends in it, I'll use the shrinker and stretcher and put the curves on it that
09:23I need to get the radius that I'm looking for.
09:25It's gonna take several passes on either side, but once I get the curve right, it'll be well worth it.
09:29I cannot write it down and say I wrote it down.
09:40What, am I gonna go and show him?
09:41Look, I wrote this down.
09:42At least you have documentation.
09:43Now that Tyler's foreman, he has a lot more communication with vendors and I have to give
09:47them a little advice on how to work with them.
09:49You know?
09:50Hey, Ron.
09:51Nice shoes.
09:52Have you seen our new sign?
09:53Employees must wear proper shoes at all times.
09:56Proper shoes at all times.
09:58These are proper.
09:59Those are not proper.
10:00Proper shoes are like these kind of shoes.
10:02That's because you guys drop stuff on your feet all the time.
10:04You don't see your toes?
10:05I don't do physical work, dude.
10:06There's no doubt you don't do physical work.
10:08But I would like for in the shop when you're walking through the areas to please have some
10:13kind of shoes on that's a little more safer than that.
10:16Get some shoes on.
10:17That's why I work for my brother.
10:19Because we didn't have rules.
10:20This sucks.
10:21Wrap them in duct tape.
10:29I need a cord.
10:30This Atwater radio is loaded with tubes and wires.
10:33Many in need of replacement.
10:35This is all eaten up.
10:36I don't even know where these wires went.
10:38What a mess.
10:39As much as I like doing things myself, sometimes I need to call in specialists.
10:45All right, George.
10:46Here's my little problem.
10:47Okay.
10:48Let's see what kind of surprises you got for me.
10:50Yeah.
10:51Rick called me down today to take a look at an antique Atwater tent.
10:55Model 37 radio made in 1926.
10:58And see if there was anything we can do with it.
11:01We're going to give it our best shot.
11:02What do you think about this thing?
11:04My gracious.
11:05The capacitors are given.
11:07You don't want to leave the old stuff in there.
11:09Well, we can test some of these tubes.
11:10Okay.
11:11Kind of see what we're looking at.
11:12All these are original from 1926.
11:15Okay, let's see.
11:20Oh, look how good that one is.
11:22That's like a brand new tube right there.
11:23Dude.
11:24Wow.
11:25This is a 27 here.
11:26Should be able just to stick it right in there and let it heat up a little bit.
11:29It's glowing.
11:30Yeah.
11:31Excellent.
11:32That's awesome.
11:33That's almost unbelievable.
11:34Yeah.
11:35I'll tell you honest to God.
11:36It's true.
11:37Awesome.
11:38Even though the tubes are in good shape, we're still not out of the woods yet.
11:41This bare wire is probably rats have been eating on it.
11:45This part of it's going to be a bear.
11:47Okay.
11:48You got to heat it up, pull all that out.
11:49Okay.
11:50Drip off all the tar.
11:51Right.
11:52And then get to the components and then go from there.
11:55All right, so George, what you're telling me is that there's a chance that we may not
11:58be able to get this thing working.
11:59Right.
12:00Whew.
12:06I'm thinking if we get this thing straight, I get a raise.
12:10Just because we conquer a challenge doesn't mean you get a raise.
12:13When the Good Humor bike came in, one of its wheels was completely bent out of shape.
12:18On all of my restorations, I try to use the original parts.
12:21So Dave and I are going to try to pound this rim back into shape.
12:25So go ahead and heat here.
12:26I'm going to bring this up.
12:27Okay.
12:28Okay.
12:29You ready?
12:30Yeah.
12:31Yeah.
12:32There we go.
12:33There we go.
12:34It's almost round.
12:48All right.
12:49That's close.
12:50That looks good.
12:51That looks way better.
12:52We're almost there.
12:55Ready?
12:56Yes.
12:57Okay.
12:58The inside of this radio has a lot of fragile tubes, and every single one of them have to
13:11be put in their exact precise place.
13:13If we break anything, we have no time to get it repaired before the customer gets here.
13:17Got it in?
13:18Yeah.
13:19Awesome.
13:20That is beautiful, guys.
13:21That is nice.
13:28Okay.
13:29We can prime here, but we can't prime on these.
13:30Yeah.
13:31Pat's here about the radio.
13:32Hey.
13:33Hey.
13:34How are you doing?
13:35Good.
13:36Good.
13:37What's going on?
13:38You're going to love it.
13:39I came today to Rick's to pick up my 1920s Atwater Kent radio.
13:43This is a rare piece.
13:44I'm excited.
13:45This thing's like the beginning of radios.
13:46It came out very nice.
13:47It's pretty, and with the right airwaves, we'll see if it's going to play.
13:52Okay.
13:53You ready?
13:54Yeah.
13:55Okay.
13:56Come on.
13:57This was my grandparents' radio.
13:58We've had it in our family since the beginning, and I'm really excited to hear this thing
14:00for the first time.
14:01All right.
14:02Wait, wait, wait.
14:03Let me make sure the sun's in the right direction.
14:04All right.
14:05Come on.
14:06I've been waiting.
14:07Come on.
14:08Wow.
14:09What do you think?
14:10That is phenomenal.
14:12I really didn't expect that at all.
14:14Not in my wildest dreams did I think this was going to come out like this.
14:17It looks brand new.
14:18Seeing the radio and what Rick had done just blew my mind.
14:23I just can't believe the paint job on it.
14:25The way it was before, it was dull.
14:27It had yellowed.
14:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:29I mean, the paint job, that was probably the hardest, trying to match that.
14:32All these diamonds and stuff were done with stencils.
14:35This has clear on top of it, so it really makes paint pop.
14:38The brass just pops off.
14:39Yeah.
14:40Yeah.
14:41We polished that all out.
14:42It almost looks like a brand new car.
14:43Yeah.
14:44You hit it out of the ballpark.
14:45I really want to see the inside of this now.
14:47Yeah.
14:48This is where it all happens in here.
14:49Wow.
14:50Is that not awesome?
14:51Holy cow.
14:52When he took the lid off and I saw the inside, it looked pristine.
14:56You did such a phenomenal job on the paint.
14:59The inside looks great.
15:00Now, I could see one of my grandparents bought it to begin with.
15:03Yeah.
15:04Yeah.
15:05Like I said, I have not heard in 51 years.
15:07Yeah.
15:08And can I hear something?
15:10Well, the final test is always actually if it does turn on.
15:13It's got tubes.
15:14They're vacuum tubes.
15:15They have to warm up a little bit.
15:16Okay.
15:17Okay.
15:18Don't turn it on.
15:21I don't hear anything yet.
15:23It's warming up.
15:24It's warming up.
15:27Wait.
15:33That is great.
15:34Sounds good, huh?
15:35Rick, that sounds phenomenal.
15:37Thank you very much.
15:39When the tubes finally warmed up and then the sound started pumping out, I said, this is great.
15:44I've been waiting so long to hear this, Rick.
15:46I mean, it really brings back memories of my grandparents.
15:49I look at this and I feel that they're here with me.
15:52Awesome.
15:53Killer.
15:54I did it.
15:55Thank you very much.
15:57Okay.
15:59Having it for so long, it was obviously important to my grandparents.
16:00The way Rick did it, it really nailed it.
16:02And now I can hand this down to the next generation of my family.
16:06All right, Ron, we got one more pair.
16:07That is ridiculous.
16:08Man, I can't wait to see this thing.
16:09I hope it looks pretty.
16:10I hear something.
16:11Get your ice cream.
16:12Oh!
16:13Shoes from $3.99.
16:14Your dad can kiss my ass if he thinks I'm going to spend a lot of money on shoes that I don't
16:18want to wear.
16:19So Ron dragged me to the shoe store with him because he doesn't want to do this alone.
16:20My dad forced him to buy shoes and now he took me with him just so I can, I don't know, help
16:24him.
16:25This is a great place.
16:26It's like a bunch of chick shoes, man.
16:27I know.
16:28I'm hoping to find nothing down here so I can keep wearing flip flops but if I do find
16:29something, it's going to be something strange.
16:42Dude, these shoes are great.
16:46You have to be fine.
16:47I need a lone shoes for $5,000, but these shoes are great.
16:54These shoes are great.
16:55These shoes suck.
16:56Look at these.
16:58I don't like anything with closed toes.
17:00What about these?
17:03What else?
17:05Oh, those are fierce.
17:07All right, we're definitely trying these on.
17:08All right.
17:09Oh, those are sick.
17:12I think Ron was really mad about having to come here
17:15and buy these shoes because he never wears shoes ever,
17:17and especially having to spend some of his own money.
17:19But then after we got here and I guess he warmed up to the place,
17:22I mean, I think he likes it a little better.
17:25Dude, this is why I don't wear shoes.
17:27Look at how...
17:28Why do you people wear shoes?
17:32Are they on?
17:34Dude, you look dope!
17:36You look so good.
17:38Look at those.
17:39Dude, you look crazy in shoes.
17:43All right, Ron, we got one more pair.
17:48That is ridiculous.
17:49You look so badass.
17:50These shoes are perfect.
17:51I had wiggle room for my toes.
17:53It was almost like I was wearing flip-flops.
17:55It was awesome.
17:56I think my dad will approve of those shoes.
17:57I mean, they're closed-toed, so Ron has a really valid
18:00argument about they meet all the requirements.
18:02Thank you very much.
18:03Have a nice day.
18:07Oh, my God.
18:08Best purchase I've ever made.
18:09Yeah.
18:10Dude, look at that.
18:12It's starting to fog up and get all good and moisty in there.
18:14Oh, that's so the image I wanted.
18:17Come on over here.
18:18Let's go find him.
18:19Babe!
18:20I came down to Rick's today to pick up my good humor bicycle.
18:22Who's that?
18:23Rick!
18:24Where is he?
18:24I don't know.
18:25Rick Dale!
18:26When I brought this thing in, it was banged up, dinged up.
18:28And I hope Rick's got it blinged up.
18:30Man, I can't wait to see this thing.
18:31I hope it looks pretty.
18:32I mean, if he got it looking pretty, that's gotta be a miracle.
18:35I hear something.
18:36I hear bells.
18:37Oh!
18:38Ice cream!
18:39Get some ice cream!
18:40That thing's awesome!
18:41I love it!
18:42When I brought it here, you couldn't even push the thing.
18:44Now it's riding smooth like a Cadillac.
18:46It looks like good humor would've looked at 1949.
18:48But I think the thing's gonna be a miracle.
18:50It's gonna be a miracle.
18:51I think it's a miracle.
18:52It's a miracle.
18:53You're looking pretty.
18:54It's a miracle.
18:55You're looking pretty.
18:56And I hope Rick's got it blinged up.
18:58I mean, I can't wait to see this thing.
18:59I hope it looks pretty.
19:00I mean, if he got it looking pretty, that's gotta be a miracle.
19:03humor would have looked in 1949. What do you think? Wow, that's pretty. Oh my gosh. The graphics on it
19:12and the bells. I'm ready for it. How'd you do this? Well, this was such a big job because it was so
19:20destroyed, missing so many parts. You remember we had the fenders missing? Yeah. Dave, he did all the
19:25fabrication. This is all handmade. It was identical. And this thing right here was all crushed in. It was
19:30awful. Well, we actually took it off. Dave made a top like this, so it's all brand new. And while he
19:35was doing that, what we did is we took those wheels and we pounded and pounded them out until we got
19:40them as straight as possible. And then we respoke it and they all looked brand new again. Wow. Then
19:44Ted put a paint job on this. Oh, it's beautiful. All this stuff is done in hand. Man, he nailed the
19:50graphics on this. I mean, that's exactly the way it would look in 1949. Right. You know, on the inside,
19:56there was a liner and it was destroyed too. So what we did is we re-insulated the whole thing.
20:00Oh, yeah. It's all nice. Oh, my God. Nice galvanized, perfect inside there.
20:04What do you think? Is there any ice cream in there? I'm looking for it. Oh, there you go.
20:12That's my favorite. He really went to town. I mean, it's like a brand new bike. I don't give it up.
20:20Yeah. But unfortunately, I opened my big fat mouth and said I'd sell it. I would say everything
20:24together here. If this was here at the shop, I wouldn't sell that for less than 15 grand.
20:2815,000. So I'll make some money. Vegas, here I come. My customer, he's going to flip out when he
20:34sees how nice this thing came out. Hold that ice cream. Don't follow me, buddy. I got something for you.
20:42Hold on here. I brought a lot of stuff to Rick over the years. And this is one thing that I'd like to
20:49keep it for myself. I mean, if this guy even hesitates on price, I might be owning a good humor by
20:54a bicycle. Sell some ice cream, buddy. Ice cream! Ice cream! Say you later right now!
21:10Where's Braun? Yeah. Hey, I need you to hurry up. I need you to go to Fresno as soon as possible
21:15so we can pick up those three machines that we're buying. Okay.
21:22What the hell? Isn't it cool? They told me I had half-closed-toed shoes.
21:28They're not shoes. So now you get to see my toes also.
21:31Congratulations. You found a loophole. And by the way, I'm making a new sock roll.
21:38Really? Oh, that's unfortunate.
21:40Ron, I got one message for you. Good luck finding clear socks.
