00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02This looks like it was thrown off a truck.
00:05What happened to this thing?
00:07It was in the building when Hurricane took the building down.
00:09We pulled this out.
00:11That is devastating.
00:12Oh, wow.
00:13I came down to get my Pep Boys marquees restored.
00:16I don't want to drop this.
00:17Just hold on over there.
00:19If we drop this, we're screwed.
00:23I've seen some serious damage, but quite honestly, nothing this bad.
00:28Wow.
00:30What the happened to this?
00:32Remember back in the day when things were made by hand and people took pride in their work?
00:38My name's Rick Dale, and I bring these things back to life.
00:43Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:47There's no owner's manual for what we do, but there's no job we can't handle.
01:05What the hell is this?
01:07Oh, wow.
01:08How you doing?
01:09Hey, I'm Scott.
01:09Scott, good to meet you.
01:10What do you think?
01:11A little project?
01:12My God, that is awesome.
01:14You're trying to get these restored or something?
01:16All right.
01:16Let me get a forklift and we'll get it off.
01:19I came down to Rick's restoration today to get my 30s era Pep Boys marquees restored.
01:24Can we go sideways?
01:25It's like moving Mount Rushmore.
01:28Just hold on over there.
01:30You're barely on.
01:31You know, when Rick first saw the marquee of the boys, I saw a little fear in his eyes.
01:36It's a pretty big job.
01:38No, don't go nowhere, bud.
01:41You got him?
01:42It's making me nervous.
01:43When a customer brings in a huge item that we have to move, the last thing that we want
01:48to do is drop it right in front of them.
01:50That would not be a good first impression.
01:53Hold on.
01:54I don't want to drop this.
01:56Go down slow.
01:58Okay.
01:59Good.
01:59This has got to be the biggest potential project to ever come into my shop.
02:04If it's this hard to move these things around, I don't know how I'm going to get it down
02:08the line.
02:08How old are these probably?
02:10These are probably from mid-30s.
02:1230s?
02:13Yeah.
02:13Wow.
02:13What do you know about Pep Boys?
02:15Well, these three started the company back in the 20s, I think in 21.
02:19Okay.
02:19They were Navy buddies, came back from the war together.
02:23Right.
02:23So these are real people.
02:24That's Manny.
02:25Manny Rosenfeld.
02:26Yeah.
02:27Mo.
02:27Mo Strauss.
02:28Okay.
02:29And Jack is actually Graham Jackson.
02:31Ah.
02:32Sounds better.
02:33Manny Mo and Jack.
02:33Manny Mo and Jack.
02:33Yeah.
02:34Easiest way to call them, the boys.
02:36Very cool.
02:37What's your idea to do with these?
02:38I mean, what do you want to do?
02:39Well, these are going to be donated to the Peterson Museum in Los Angeles.
02:44And I can't donate them like this.
02:46They're going to be on display.
02:48So we want you to restore them before they go into the Peterson Museum.
02:52Wow.
02:53It's always an honor to be able to work on anything that's going to be put in a museum.
02:58But I definitely have some concerns on how I'm going to put some Pat back into this piece.
03:03I got some questions for you.
03:05All right.
03:05Okay.
03:05I can see they're sort of patched up a little bit.
03:08Is that from damage or is that how they built them?
03:10No.
03:10So these were built in the 30s, you know, before they really made molds.
03:15So they're all hand laid fiberglass.
03:17So, you know, I think you want to keep some of that look to it because that's the original.
03:22Right.
03:23We take away from that.
03:24That's right.
03:25We did that.
03:25There was a cigar though.
03:27There was.
03:27Yeah.
03:28So Manny had a cigar here.
03:30Oh, right where this hole is.
03:31Yeah.
03:32Early 90s.
03:33Great American smoke out.
03:35Company thought it would be best to, you know, be politically correct.
03:38Right.
03:38Which is fine.
03:39This is a piece of American history.
03:41Yes, absolutely.
03:42So, I mean, the cigar belongs there.
03:43I think we've got to keep the cigar.
03:45Yeah.
03:45All right.
03:45I'm with you.
03:45You know, obviously the checked and cracked paint needs to come down.
03:49Right.
03:49And then there's a few places that we've got to repair.
03:52Right.
03:52Yeah, I'm seeing this.
03:52I think each one of the boys' feet are cracked.
03:54And since it's going in a museum, I think we need to put a base on it somehow.
03:58So what I'll probably do, first we'll pull that frame out, then we'll strip all that paint off there,
04:04and then fix the feet and get you a base done.
04:07Yep.
04:07To where it looks all nice.
04:09Museum quality.
04:09Museum quality.
04:11Yeah.
04:12Given that, that's a big thing.
04:14And going and painting them all up and then doing all their features.
04:17You know, hand painting all that features.
04:18Find a little cigar.
04:20Cigar.
04:20Yeah.
04:21And then get that all done.
04:23So, how much?
04:26Well, I'm looking at, I'm looking at probably fifteen.
04:32Fifteen hundred?
04:33No.
04:34I'm looking more like fifteen thousand.
04:36Oh.
04:37That much?
04:38The deal is that all is done by hand.
04:41I can't use a machine on this.
04:43I'm worried that if we be blasted or strip it, I'll blow holes in it and I'll cause myself
04:47even more work.
04:48And it's big.
04:50Look at the thing.
04:51It is pretty big.
04:52Is that the best you can do?
04:54I mean, you just said it yourself.
04:55It's museum quality.
04:57And I want this thing done right, you know?
05:02Well, I'll tell you what.
05:05Take care of our boys.
05:06I'll take care of your boys.
05:07You got a deal.
05:08Alright.
05:09Thanks.
05:10Come on in the office.
05:10Alright.
05:11I'll get somebody to get started somehow.
05:14The Pep Boys marquee is a piece of history and I can't wait to see what Rick does with
05:19them.
05:25Mmm.
05:26What you got, man?
05:27Take a look at that and how long do you think you're going to have hand sanding everything,
05:31front and rear?
05:32Gee.
05:33We're restoring this colossal Pep Boys statue that's made out of fiberglass.
05:38It's going to be a museum piece, so I want this thing perfect.
05:41But sanding it by hand looks much more involved than I thought.
05:45I mean, it looks like it's got like 70 coats of paint on it.
05:48I mean, look how thick it is.
05:49Mmm-hmm.
05:50But you know, that's how far we've got to go to.
05:52Yeah.
05:52And we've got all these intricate little spots that he's got on his face and inside here
05:56and in there.
05:57Don't you think it's going to take us days?
05:59It could because a lot of this is just from a lot of paint built up.
06:03Yeah.
06:03I think we need to try to blast it.
06:05But I think that the sandblasting is going to eat holes into it.
06:07We've done that fiberglass and it blasts right through it.
06:10So I think I want to try the guy that we used on the soda blasting.
06:14For this it might do well.
06:15So let's try that guy.
06:17But I need you to try to hit those feet enough at least to hold them together.
06:21See like this here?
06:22Yeah.
06:23At least get them back together.
06:24Yeah.
06:25Get them close.
06:26Patch out?
06:27Yeah.
06:28Patch out there.
06:29Any place that's got a good split in it that when he blasts it is going to just go through.
06:34Okay?
06:37I have to patch these cracks from the backside in order to reinforce the existing fiberglass
06:42so they can soda blast it because they were really busted up.
06:45So I'm using a quick drying cloth to patch the feet rather than the fiber because it's much stronger.
07:00Today, I got a couple coming in from the East Coast.
07:03They said they had something they wanted me to restore that's definitely in bad shape.
07:07Hello.
07:07How are you?
07:08Good.
07:09I'm dying to see what they got for me.
07:11Let's see what you got.
07:12Oh.
07:13Oh.
07:14Oh.
07:14Oh.
07:14Wow.
07:15That is bad.
07:17We came here to Rick's restoration to get our 1948 coat cooler restored.
07:21This looks like it was thrown off a truck.
07:24I mean, what happened to this thing?
07:26It worked right up until the day it took the bath.
07:29It got destroyed by Hurricane Irene and the flood damage.
07:31Oh, really?
07:32Yes.
07:33It was in the building when Hurricane took the building down and went into a 15-foot hole and was
07:38destroyed.
07:39Wow.
07:39And we pulled this out.
07:41Oh.
07:42Jeez.
07:43That is some water.
07:45Oh.
07:46Oh, my gosh.
07:48That whole thing's falling in the hole.
07:49That is devastating.
07:51Yes.
07:51We lost a good portion of our store.
07:54It's a mess.
07:54How long did it take to clean up?
07:55Well, we're still working at it now.
07:57Wow.
07:58I've seen my fair share of Coke machines in my day, but quite honestly,
08:02nothing this bad.
08:04These guys have a crazy story and an attachment to this machine,
08:07so I really hope I get to restore it for them.
08:10So this is a Model 23 spin top.
08:12The awesome thing about this is this is a deluxe.
08:15Most of them that Vendo made were just flat on the front
08:17to where they didn't have a raised lettered panel like this.
08:20They were just totally flat.
08:21So this is very, very cool.
08:23So what we're going to do is we're going to tear it apart.
08:25There's not a lot of moving parts except in the lid.
08:28So we got a little bit of work there dealing with just the top,
08:30probably an hour to mark everything out.
08:32So there's some stuff on the interior of the thing that are missing.
08:35The good part is that we at least have the bottom part of it
08:37because a lot of the times this bottom half is gone,
08:40and I see a lot of body work.
08:42I guarantee once I show this to my body man,
08:44he's going to pull his hair out because it's not one corner is straight.
08:47Yeah, we did that coming out.
08:49Pulling it out, ripped it because it was stuck full of mud.
08:51Stuck full of mud, yeah.
08:52Right.
08:53So after we get all that finished and done and working
08:55and looking all the way it did like back in the day,
08:58I'm looking at $4,800 to do the whole thing.
09:02What do you think?
09:06Well, it is our baby.
09:10Let's do it.
09:12You got it.
09:13Well, you see it now.
09:15I can't wait till you see it when you get back
09:16because this thing is probably the ugliest looking thing
09:18that's ever came in the shop, Coke machine-wise.
09:22This project is much more than just a restoration.
09:25These people lost everything they had in that storm.
09:28If I can bring just a little piece of that back,
09:31I think it will mean the world to them.
09:33We're at right here, you think?
09:34We're restoring this colossal Pep Boys statue,
09:37so I'm going to need all hands on deck.
09:39We can't have them come back looking like Swiss cheese.
09:43Hey, Sue.
09:44Hi, how are you?
09:46We've made two trips from New York now here,
09:48so it better be a nice job.
09:51Let's see how you did.
09:52All right, here we go.
10:02What is this thing?
10:03It's a 23 spin top is what it's called.
10:06My dad just asked me to tear down this gnarly-looking Coke machine
10:08that just came in,
10:09so I grabbed Rutley to give me a hand.
10:11In here, it held 23 bottles, and it would spin around,
10:14and each time it spun, it would line up with this hole,
10:16so you'd open that and then take the bottle out.
10:18Hmm.
10:19Take some pictures.
10:21No, I meant of me.
10:24Uh...
10:26You know how it goes.
10:28Whee!
10:33Oh, look at that.
10:34Looks like it stinks, but sitting in the bottom of a lake.
10:37I'd say so.
10:39Look at you go.
10:42Whoa!
10:44It's a lot lighter now.
10:46I bet.
10:57We're doing a major restoration on a Pet Boys item
11:00that's going to be displayed in the museum.
11:02One of the statues used to have a cigar in his mouth,
11:05so we're recreating that piece out of wood.
11:10We figured out the dimensions for Manny's cigar,
11:12so I'm using the lathe to do some high-speed whittling
11:14so we can carve the stogie down to size.
11:22Once we trim the ends and paint the wood,
11:25it will look exactly like the original.
11:39Now I know why you're so noisy in here, Phil.
11:42Phil and I are hammering away on a 1940s ventilator coke machine.
11:47This thing took some serious damage during Hurricane Irene,
11:50so we're going to double-team it
11:52and try to undo the wrath of Mother Nature.
11:56This is the worst damage I've ever seen on a coke machine.
11:59The sides are all torn up and the frame is twisted.
12:03Nothing is straight on this thing.
12:05Besides the front, I want to find out what is square.
12:08Where's the liner?
12:09Where's the piece that was at this sheet metal in here?
12:11That we can square this up with?
12:14What the happened to this?
12:16The one piece that squares off the frame
12:18and supports the structure
12:20looks like a stampede of wild horses ran over it.
12:24It's Beyonce.
12:25So while we finish the body work,
12:27I'm going to have Dave trace a pattern for it
12:29and fabricate a new one.
12:44We're at right here, you think?
12:45Yeah, it looks good.
12:46So today I came to Mutt & Jeff's to get the Pet Boys soda blasted.
12:49We sandblast, bead blast, and soda blast,
12:52but for this Pet Boys job, we're going to soda blast.
12:56Is that what you're looking for?
12:57Yeah.
12:58Looks like we just put some Rogaine on the head.
13:00You never sandblast fiberglass because it's too abrasive.
13:03Soda blasting doesn't generate any heat.
13:06It's basically like baking soda.
13:07You can make cookies with it, but we blast with it.
13:09It comes in a lot bigger bag.
13:11Soda's lighter than the sand,
13:12so you need more pressure when you're blasting.
13:14So we run about 120 pounds per square inch.
13:16You can use water and air or just air.
13:18I chose just to use air,
13:19so it'd be softer on the material.
13:23We're slowly making progress on the Pet Boys project.
13:26Phil is patching up some of the damaged sections on the body
13:29with fiberglass.
13:31We still want to leave some of the character in there,
13:33but this thing has taken years of abuse
13:35that we're trying to reverse.
13:37Now Ted's going to work his magic
13:39and put some pep back into the boys
13:41with a custom paint job.
13:46Painting fiberglass is really no different than painting anything else.
13:48I just have to make sure that I cover all of the nooks and crannies,
13:51and boy are there a lot of nooks and crannies on this thing.
14:01This is easily the largest thing that I've ever painted for Rick,
14:03and I'm putting in a lot of hours to get this thing painted on time.
14:14That's good.
14:17The Coke machine we're fixing up
14:18was missing a bunch of metal cylinders
14:20to hold the Cokes in place when the Mech spins are out.
14:23Without them, this thing is just a big cooler,
14:25so I have to refabricate all these from scratch.
14:30Nice.
14:32Got 20-something more to do.
14:48These folks lost just about everything they had,
14:50so we want to make sure this machine is perfect.
14:52Hopefully they'll put a nice smile on their face.
14:55Wow!
14:58What I want to do is I want to put four pieces of this into Fonzie's room,
15:02and we'll go ahead and we'll tech-screw that in, all right?
15:06Hold on a sec.
15:08Hey, Sue.
15:09Hi, how are you?
15:10How you been?
15:10We brought our Vendo 23 Coke machine to Rick's
15:13to get it repaired after it was damaged in an hurricane.
15:16We've made two trips from New York now here,
15:18so it better be a nice job.
15:21You guys excited?
15:22We're excited.
15:23All right, I need to move something, and I'll take you to it, okay?
15:25All right.
15:26Okay.
15:28All right.
15:28Oh, wow. Look at that.
15:30Oh, my goodness.
15:31It's beautiful.
15:33Rick pulled away that plywood.
15:34That really looked nice.
15:36It was just absolutely gorgeous.
15:37It was much more than I expected.
15:39What do you think?
15:40That can't be the same one.
15:42Yeah, it's the same one.
15:43This is gorgeous.
15:44You like it?
15:45I love it.
15:46It has things on it I didn't know it had.
15:48Yeah, there was a lot of stuff that was missing.
15:50You know, it's been around, been through a hurricane, right?
15:52Right.
15:53I've seen Irene and got beat up.
15:55You know, I've got to give Phil, our body man, you know,
15:59high points for doing the work on this,
16:01because it was pretty trash.
16:02It was pretty trash.
16:02It had rips in it, which stretched the metal,
16:05and in order to get that metal back to normal again and straight,
16:09you had to heat shrink all the metal,
16:11try not to use so much material or bondo or anything.
16:13So it's very, very thin metal,
16:15and for it to get twisted once, it's basically trash.
16:18So to bring it back to life, it was hard.
16:20And there was, you know, there was all kinds of stuff missing.
16:22I mean, we had the knobs missing on the top,
16:25and the whole, if you remember right,
16:26the cylinders on the inside were missing.
16:28Yeah.
16:28Can we see the inside of it?
16:30Yeah, sure.
16:33Oh, my.
16:34You remember, you brought it in,
16:35it was basically, you just lifted up the door,
16:37and you grabbed up a soda.
16:38Mm-hmm.
16:38So now it's a vendor.
16:39When you put the money in the top,
16:41it goes through this mechanism,
16:42it slides into this bottom mechanism,
16:44you turn the knob,
16:45and then this thing spins,
16:46and allows the whole drum to spin.
16:49So everything has to work perfectly
16:50for it to get to move like that.
16:51So you had to make all these tubes then?
16:53Yep, redid all these tubes.
16:54Oh, that's amazing.
16:55It really looks great.
16:56Does it work, Rick?
16:57Well, I think you need to give her a shot.
17:00All right.
17:01Set it in there.
17:03Okay, turn the handle.
17:06Pull her up.
17:07Pull out a cold one.
17:09There you go.
17:10There it is.
17:11Try it out.
17:12All right.
17:19It is the coldest soda.
17:21Well, it's beautiful.
17:22It works.
17:23We appreciate it.
17:24Okay, all right.
17:25Thank you so much.
17:26You bet.
17:27I hope you love it.
17:27I hope you do.
17:28It's beautiful.
17:29We love it, yes.
17:30When we pulled this out of the rubble
17:31from Hurricane Irene,
17:33we never expected that it was going to come out
17:34looking this good again,
17:35but it's come out better than it did,
17:37and we're really happy.
17:40We've been busting hump on this Pep Boys project.
17:43I came back to pick up our Manny, Moe, and Jack.
17:45Did you take care of my boys?
17:46Here we go.
17:47Wow!
17:48That is way cool!
18:01We've been busting hump on this giant statue project,
18:04and now we're in the home stretch.
18:07Robert and Cowboy are busy craft on a wood base
18:10so we can mount this thing like a trophy.
18:12I like that.
18:13Now it's time to get this thing painted,
18:15and when we're through with it,
18:16it's going to look great.
18:18Okay, let's grab the boys.
18:20Watch your step.
18:22Come on!
18:24Go, Derek.
18:26Perfect.
18:29All right. Thanks, guys.
18:31You buying a beer?
18:41Hey, can you take care of the rest of that?
18:44I've got a customer.
18:46Hey, Scott.
18:47Hey, Rick. How you doing?
18:48Good, good. What's been going on?
18:49Good to see you, brother.
18:50Good to see you.
18:51I came back to Rick's restoration
18:53to pick up our Manny, Mo, and Jack.
18:55Did you take care of my boys?
18:56Yeah.
18:57Nice.
18:57I got them boys. They are spit-shined.
18:59I can't wait to show you these things.
19:00They're awesome.
19:01Let's go do it.
19:02Okay.
19:02This was a big project,
19:03and I'm a little bit nervous
19:05at whether you could pull it off or not.
19:07So, you ready?
19:08I'm ready.
19:09All right.
19:09Here we go.
19:11Wow!
19:13Look at that.
19:14Is that cool?
19:15That is way cool.
19:17You did an amazing job.
19:19Thanks.
19:20You know, when I first saw them,
19:21the most noticeable thing was the pop of the color
19:25and the detail.
19:26It was just perfect.
19:30Absolutely amazing.
19:31Yeah.
19:31I'm really, really proud of this.
19:33Every one of the guys worked really, really hard.
19:35How did you do it?
19:37A lot of manpower, a lot of hand power.
19:39Bodywork.
19:40Bodywork.
19:40A lot of bodywork.
19:41You know, we talked about it.
19:43I didn't want it just perfectly smooth.
19:44I wanted the original sort of feel and the texture of it.
19:48That's the whole hand thing.
19:49And we've got like almost 300 hours in just bodywork.
19:54Unbelievable.
19:55You've still got the texture.
19:56You've got the pleats, the creases.
19:58Yeah, even the sweater.
19:59Yep.
20:00The sweaters are cool.
20:00The sweaters came out great.
20:01The colors are cool.
20:03These are all hand-painted?
20:04Yes, that's all hand-painted.
20:06Mustache, eyebrows, eyes.
20:08Wow, let me tell you.
20:10Amazing job.
20:11Yeah.
20:11The shine on that.
20:12I mean, this thing is a museum piece.
20:13I wanted it to stand out.
20:15That's right.
20:15Stand out.
20:16I'll tell you what.
20:16The cigar.
20:17Is that cool?
20:18That is way cool.
20:19Robert went and cut that whole cigar out, laid it all out.
20:22Did he?
20:23And then Ted did the final painting on it.
20:25I mean, totally cool.
20:26I know.
20:26It's been a long time since somebody's seen that cigar in Vanny's mouth.
20:29Unbelievable.
20:31And you did a great job on the base, too.
20:33Yeah.
20:34Now, what is that?
20:34Is that fiberglass also?
20:35No, it's wood.
20:36It's all-rounded wood.
20:38Wow.
20:38It's all wood.
20:39And then we full-finished it with sort of that leather look.
20:42Gotcha.
20:42I wanted a museum style.
20:44I wanted a trophy.
20:45Yeah.
20:45So I figured we would have set it on a base like that.
20:47That's perfect.
20:48All the attention to detail, the base, the cigar, the whole thing was just really, really
20:53cool.
20:57Well, here's a $15,000 question.
21:00You hit that one on that, didn't you?
21:01You can hit me for more or did you come in on budget?
21:04I'm happy to say that we made budget.
21:06Good.
21:07Well, brother, that was just an amazing job.
21:09I sure thank you.
21:10Thank you very much.
21:11I appreciate you sending it.
21:12It was an absolute honor doing them.
21:14Just an absolute pleasure.
21:16You were the only choice.
21:17I can't wait to unveil those at the Peterson Automotive Museum.
