00:00You sound like Charlie Brown's teacher.
00:02Wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, wah.
00:04Up next on American Restoration.
00:06What's this?
00:07Holy smokes.
00:08It's a 59 BMW with a sidecar.
00:11I think bikes are like, if you don't take care of them and ride them every now and then, then they're going to look like this.
00:19Hey, I'm Troy, the redneck picker.
00:21The redneck picker.
00:22That's right, man.
00:23It's important to get a read on a new picker right away.
00:26They think they got gold when they really have crap.
00:29I'll go 950.
00:31Rick!
00:33Look at that.
00:35He's usually a tough Marine.
00:36See a couple tears in his eyes.
00:38It's definitely worth it.
00:40Look at a man's workbench.
00:43You see his passions.
00:45His work's in progress.
00:49The things that drive him crazy.
00:53Projects that?
00:55You get the point.
00:56Anyway, every workbench tells a story.
01:00And this is ours.
01:01American Restoration.
01:03Some of the most challenging projects that we see here at the shop are where a customer starts a restoration and then figures out they're way over their head.
01:16Oh, dad, what's this?
01:20Holy smokes.
01:21Whatever it is, it looks badass.
01:23Hey, guys.
01:24How you doing?
01:25Morning.
01:25Tom.
01:26Good to meet you, Tom.
01:27Nice to meet you.
01:27Tom.
01:28You're Tom?
01:29Tom.
01:29Two Toms.
01:30Tom.
01:30All right, tell me what it is.
01:31I give up.
01:32It's a 59 BMW with a sidecar.
01:35Okay, I see the sidecar and I see parts of the BMW.
01:39My dad and I came down here to Rick's Restoration to get the motorcycle and sidecar restored and I'm really excited to get it done.
01:46We started out trying to restore it ourselves and we realized that it needed a professional hand.
01:54All right, tell me about it.
01:55This was my dad's bike.
01:56He got it back in 76.
01:58And it was together?
01:59It was together.
02:00He had the engine worked on a little bit.
02:02Sidecar was black when he got it.
02:04I just want to get it restored.
02:06Did it come with that, this sidecar?
02:07The bike itself is a 59 European.
02:10Right.
02:11The sidecar came out of a barn and then it was a German travel car.
02:15There was a special seat that could come out and you supposedly roll out a mat and sleep in this thing.
02:21Ah, so the guy could actually sleep in it too?
02:23Right.
02:23Wow.
02:24Wow, I never even thought of using it for that.
02:26When I bought it, the engine had a timing gear problem.
02:30Okay.
02:30So it took about three years to find the gear and my intention was to move on to the sidecar.
02:36This bike was torn down back in the 70s and never put back together.
02:40This was over 40 years ago and all I'm thinking about is how many parts are missing from this thing.
02:45So when you tore it apart, you tore it apart in one garage?
02:48Yeah.
02:48This is like a big thing because when you tear things apart, you know things get lost.
02:52My guys tear things, next day we lose parts.
02:54Well, so if this has been a few years where it's torn down, you think it's all here now?
02:59Took it apart, put everything into boxes.
03:01Okay.
03:01And put the boxes up on a shelf.
03:04Okay.
03:04The big pieces sat out.
03:06Right.
03:06And my son came along and looked at this and said, maybe we should do something with this thing in the corner.
03:13I think that's cool.
03:14All right.
03:15So, Rick, you've seen it.
03:17You've heard it.
03:18What do you think it's all going to cost?
03:21Cost.
03:21Well, I'm only going by what you guys are saying.
03:23It sounds like it was together.
03:25It sounds like it ran before.
03:27I'm looking probably right around $12,000 to do it.
03:31Let's do it.
03:32Awesome.
03:33Thanks, guys.
03:34Thank you very much for bringing it in.
03:35It's very cool.
03:36It's something I've never done.
03:37The fact that this bike has been torn down and sitting around for years has gotten worse.
03:42I normally love to restore bikes, but this one has the potential to be a huge pain in the ass.
03:47This bike is going to be a huge project, and we're going to need some expert advice.
03:57So, while we're waiting on the motorcycle gurus, I've got some other things to take care of.
04:02Kyle, cowboy, come to my office, please.
04:05You, too, Dick.
04:07I can barely hear you, Rick.
04:08Well, you heard me.
04:09That's the main thing.
04:10You sound like Charlie Brown's teacher.
04:12Wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, wah.
04:13Well, at least you heard something.
04:15You came in running.
04:16All right, this is the deal.
04:18I wanted to put up a PA.
04:19I want to be able to, in case there's a job or something I need you to do, I just give you a quick, eh, this is what we need to do so you know about it and hear about it.
04:25At the same time, if we need to have a meeting or something, I can just call you out.
04:28This is laziness.
04:30Things have been running great at the shop without an intercom system.
04:32Why do we need one now?
04:33He's got Tyler for that ****.
04:35Looks like we're at Walmart.
04:37Sounds like we're at Walmart.
04:38I just want to make sure you guys heard me.
04:40Get back to work.
04:46Hey, Rick.
04:49I got a customer over here.
04:50They want to see you.
04:51Hey, I'm Rick.
04:52Good to meet you.
04:53Hi, I'm Dan.
04:53Nice to meet you.
04:54Dan, good to meet you.
04:55Let's, um, can we go over here?
04:57Let's go right over here.
04:58Dig out in a little shade.
05:00Let's see what you got.
05:01Thanks, Vons.
05:02So, what do we got here?
05:04Oh, wow.
05:05They have a little pencil dispenser.
05:06This is pretty cool.
05:08I've never seen one of those.
05:10Where did you get this?
05:11I found it online.
05:12My great aunt had one in her butcher shop grocery store.
05:15She didn't like people coming in and borrowing their pencils.
05:18Right.
05:19And I just seen one online and had to have it.
05:22It just brought back old memories when I seen it.
05:24When you're getting old, memories are nice to have.
05:26It's a cool machine.
05:27I've never seen anything like this.
05:29It looks 40s, but five cents for a pencil in the 40s, it was insane.
05:33Boy, it might be repainted from what I see.
05:36You know how it used to work.
05:38There's a little box right in down in here.
05:41And what it would do is when you put the nickel in here and you push this down, it would actually activate this alarm.
05:46How can you see it done?
05:48Well, my plan is get it restored and working.
05:50And I want to donate it to the Nevada chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America as a fundraiser for them.
05:57So, you're going to raffle it off?
05:57We're going to raffle it off and try to make sure they get their benefits and their wheelchairs and all the meditation that they need.
06:04Oh, wow.
06:04That's awesome.
06:05That's a great cause.
06:07I love doing every project I do here at my shop.
06:09But it's jobs like this that are really special to me because all the hard work goes to a good cause.
06:15What we'll do is we'll take it apart and then we'll start sandblasting pieces, sandblast the base, sandblast this portion here.
06:20And then we'll go ahead and redo all this glass.
06:22So, we'll get it all done.
06:24I'll paint it in the color that it's supposed to be while working properly.
06:26Anyway, the whole thing done together, I'm looking, 600 bucks probably, do the whole thing.
06:33And then you're going to have no problem raffling it off because I'm going to do a killer job on this thing.
06:37Well, sounds good.
06:39All right.
06:39Well, I'm excited to get started on it.
06:40Let's go in the office and we'll take care of some paperwork from there.
06:43Get out of the heat.
06:44Yeah, get out of the heat.
06:45Thanks for bringing it up.
06:46This is like a 59 BMW.
06:52What do you think?
06:53Uh, I'm afraid, Rick.
06:55It's just very dismantled.
06:58Trying to find pieces could get more expensive than the whole bike is even worth.
07:03Cowboy, I need you to polish the popcorn ASAP.
07:06F*** you.
07:07The next time Rick bosses me around this intercom, he's going to find it up his ass.
07:16Earlier, I had a customer drop off an old BMW motorcycle with a sidecar.
07:25I called in a real motorcycle guru, Magic Mike.
07:29Because when it got here, it was in pieces.
07:31And I have no idea what parts could be missing.
07:34Magic Mike, how the heck are you?
07:35Hey, Rick, what's up, bud?
07:37How much?
07:37How you been?
07:38Nah, old, ugly, tired, mean, fat, and broke.
07:41Okay.
07:42I fix motorcycles.
07:43I don't just like riding.
07:45I love riding.
07:46I mean, if I could ride around naked, I probably would.
07:50And I have, so.
07:52Here it is.
07:53Um, this is like a 59 BMW, you know, on the bike end of it.
07:58What do you think?
08:00I think bikes are like, if you don't take care of them and ride them every now and then,
08:04then, uh, they're going to look like this.
08:09Magic Mike is a real character, but he definitely knows his stuff.
08:12This bike and sidecar are really unique, and it's hard to know if it's all here.
08:17So if anything needs a little magic, it's this project.
08:20Well, you've got the engine, crankcase, there's your pistons and rings.
08:25Okay, so that box just got here.
08:27That's a plus.
08:28Spark plug, caps, push rods, and clutch.
08:32Okay.
08:33It looks like he's got the main parts here.
08:37Okay.
08:38And they look like they're in pretty good shape.
08:40Okay.
08:41For its age, it's extremely good condition.
08:44It's just very dismantled.
08:48So it's the small pieces that you're going to have to worry about.
08:51Okay.
08:51If you need anything, go through it.
08:53If you find anything you don't have or can't find or anything like that, we'll take care of it for you.
08:57Okay.
08:58Awesome.
08:58That sounds awesome, Mike.
08:59Thanks, buddy.
09:00Take care.
09:00See you later.
09:01Take care.
09:01Ride safe.
09:02I'll see you later.
09:02I think it's going to be badass.
09:04I mean, any way you go about it, this is going to be one bike that I'd really like to say,
09:09yeah, I saw that when it was trash.
09:11You know what I mean?
09:12All right.
09:22On today's schedule, Kyle, I need you to assemble the 81 as soon as possible.
09:26Kyle Boy, I need you to polish the popcorn and to get it ready for Kyle ASAP.
09:32That's today's schedule.
09:35F*** you.
09:36The next time Rick bosses me around this intercom, he's going to find it up his ass.
09:40All that s*** is done, Tyler.
09:43Well, what do you want me to do?
09:44I finished that pump at the end of last week.
09:46He's just trying to make it more efficient.
09:48My dad set up this new intercom system for the shop.
09:50It's got all the guys super bent out of shape.
09:53But as the foreman, it's my job to back up my dad no matter what.
09:56He's talking about how big this place is, and everybody's in a different spot at a different
10:00time, so he can make everybody do one thing.
10:03Yeah, but he's sitting behind his desk.
10:05He don't know what's going on out here.
10:07I need you to get the pencil dispenser to Ted for paint.
10:11ASAP.
10:12I did that a long time ago.
10:14Forget what I just said.
10:16The last thing my dad needs is a microphone.
10:19He's wasting his breath.
10:20Oh, cool.
10:31Ron gave me the heads up that a picker friend of his is going to swing by the shop today.
10:35In my business, it's crucial to make new contacts with good finds.
10:39Hey, I'm Troy, the redneck picker.
10:41The redneck picker.
10:42That's right, man.
10:43Good to meet you.
10:44If you like what I got, we could probably have a good, long-lasting relationship.
10:48I'm ready.
10:48It's important to get a read on a new picker right away.
10:52Sometimes, people know what they got.
10:54Other times, they think they got gold when they really have crap.
10:57Like this little 1950s evap cooler?
11:00Yeah.
11:01I mean, what a perfect place for it.
11:02It's dry, it's hot in Vegas.
11:03Yeah, it's a car cooler.
11:05I mean, I think that'd be a great sell right there.
11:07This evaporation cooler is actually pretty collectible.
11:10They were an after-sale add-on product for cars since the 1930s.
11:14They work best in low humidity, so they're really popular in the Southwest.
11:19This is pretty cool.
11:20Old Fairbanks Morse can't miss engine.
11:22There's a big collectible thing with this.
11:23They sit around, they let them run, pop, pop, pop.
11:26When these things are spinning, what they do is run other pieces of farm equipment, like a well.
11:31Right.
11:31It might be a saw.
11:32It would actually run a generator as well.
11:34Right.
11:34Yeah, it's a good piece.
11:35I like it.
11:36What's that?
11:37That goes to the corn sheller.
11:39Oh.
11:39That's a cool piece because it's, you know, wood and steel and still has decent graphics
11:44and it's all there.
11:45You know, you put your corn, you know, in there and you just turn that around.
11:49It'll peel all the corn pieces of corn off of it.
11:52It goes right down the chute in a bucket.
11:53And the cob comes out and you feed it to the pigs.
11:56No frigging way.
11:57Yeah, no, this is exactly what that is.
11:58It's a sharp piece.
11:59It's got wood, it's got steel.
12:01It does.
12:01It's very artistic.
12:02It's got some graphics on it.
12:03It says a lot about heritage and how we used to do stuff.
12:05Things giving me goosebumps.
12:06I love that piece.
12:07Good deal.
12:08There's a couple pieces I have on the trailer that I know Rick is stoked about because,
12:11I mean, for gosh sakes, the guy said he got goosebumps about my corn shucker.
12:14Okay, the whole package that I want here, I'll give you $800 for all of it.
12:22I'll go $950.
12:26You've got like these poker face glasses on, you know, so I really can't tell.
12:29I can't see your eyes.
12:31All right, here you go.
12:32$950.
12:34Last one.
12:36$850.
12:37Last one.
12:38You know what?
12:38I'm going to tell you why I'm going to take your deal.
12:40Okay.
12:41Because I'll save that extra $50 in gas going back to Southern California with less of a load.
12:45All right, my friend.
12:46Cool.
12:46Thank you very much.
12:47Awesome.
12:47Appreciate it.
12:48Anytime you get a load, you come back here.
12:50I will.
12:50You're my new man.
12:51All right, cool.
12:51Thank you, Rick.
12:52I had a great time coming to Rick's.
12:54The best part about this is I got invited back.
13:02We've been working on a really cool BMW bike with a sidecar.
13:07Safety is a top priority on this project.
13:09So I'm going to have my guys build an additional support frame to reinforce the whole sidecar.
13:15When this thing's done structurally, it's going to be 10 times stronger than it was before.
13:31Hello?
13:33Hello?
13:34What is going on with this phone?
13:36How do I freaking button?
13:37Hello?
13:38Hello?
13:39Ron.
13:41Ron.
13:42What?
13:43What are you doing, dude?
13:44I'm trying to call customers.
13:45But you're over the intercom.
13:46Everybody can hear you.
13:48Out there?
13:49Out everywhere.
13:52That's not how that works.
13:53Now I'm just over it.
13:55All this loudspeaker thing is, is loud.
13:58Don't use that phone.
14:03Rick, if you can hear me, the system blows.
14:05You don't even know how to use a phone?
14:09What up, boob.
14:10I want you to see this in the sun, because it looks bad to the bone, okay?
14:22Okay.
14:23All right?
14:23So it's over here.
14:24I'm here today to pick up my pencil dispenser that I had Rick's restore.
14:28I'm donating this to the Nevada Paralyzed Veterans of America, so very excited to see it.
14:34Okay, so you remember, Dan?
14:35I told you that I was going to do some research on it.
14:37So I did some research.
14:38Very little to be found.
14:39This thing is rare.
14:40As far as the shape of it, the size of it, the color of it, everything's rare.
14:44Are you ready?
14:45Okay, I'm ready.
14:46Okay, here we go.
14:47One, two, three.
14:50Oh, wow, that's excellent.
14:51That looks like a different machine.
14:53When Rick showed me the machine, it just, wow, just blew me away.
14:57And it's just gorgeous.
14:58So much nicer than I thought it would be.
15:00The green, this is called hammer tone.
15:02It looks like a hammered finish, but this is a very industrial paint job.
15:05You got great taste in color.
15:07On this face plate, we redid it totally.
15:11We went and redid all the lettering and all that green and everything.
15:14And then, of course, when we went and put the pencils in there,
15:16so the yellow with the greens, the lime green and the darker green, it definitely makes it pop.
15:21It looks really good.
15:22Yeah.
15:22This is beautiful.
15:23I have absolutely no complaints at all.
15:26Nowhere near what I expected.
15:28It's just gorgeous.
15:29When we took it apart, there was some rust.
15:31So we ended up going through it and cleaning it all up and getting it all fixed.
15:33One of the things I was trying to research was if it really was five cents the whole time.
15:38And what I found was that the machine was not from the 40s.
15:41It was manufactured in 1951.
15:44And at that time, the pencils were actually five cents.
15:47Outstanding.
15:48Yeah.
15:48Does it work?
15:50Well, it should.
15:50Well, you got a nickel.
15:51I'm too cheap.
15:52Yeah, I got a nickel.
15:54There's a nickel.
15:54There you go.
15:56Okay, we'll give it a try.
15:57There you go.
16:03Wow.
16:04I love that.
16:05That's excellent.
16:06I really do.
16:08The way this looks, Rick, I'm positive that it's going to do excellent and make the Paralyzed Veterans of America some money on this.
16:15Awesome.
16:16That's awesome.
16:17That's good.
16:17I'm glad to be part of that.
16:18I'm really honored to be able to restore this piece for the Veterans Raffle.
16:23Hopefully, this thing will raise a lot of money to benefit Paralyzed Veterans all over Nevada.
16:29Here in our boneyard, we have a variety of different makes and models and manufacturers of soda machines.
16:36Each one of them holding their own special value.
16:39So out of these three machines, which do you think is the most sought after by the serious collector?
16:46A, the Coca-Cola Vendo 39, B, the Coca-Cola Cavalier 72, or C, the Royal Crown Vendolator 81?
17:01The answer and more coming up.
17:07Of these three machines, which is the most highly collectible?
17:11The answer is C, the Royal Crown Vendolator 81.
17:15This thing is worth $15,000 as it sits, and there was only a few hundred of them made.
17:21So if you're lucky enough to find this bad boy, you better buy it, and you better buy it right.
17:26Period.
17:35Baby Cakes, can you bring the paperwork for that job for the fan?
17:39Baby Cakes.
17:40Baby Cakes.
17:41Get on the ball there, Baby Cakes.
17:43Where did that come from?
17:44Oh, my God.
17:46Honey Buns, can you bring the invoice for the job for the Coke Machine?
17:51Come on, Honey Buns.
17:55Newlyweds.
17:56Hey, Mr. Goods, when you come to my office, can you bring the paperwork for the fan?
18:02And also for that one Coke Machine that we're having called?
18:05This is enough of this.
18:06Oh, my God.
18:07One more.
18:08Ain't that sweet?
18:09I don't know what these two are trying to do at work, but they need to do this stuff at home.
18:13I'll just have to keep calling these little nicknames until that intercom comes down permanently.
18:18Sweet Cheeks.
18:19You're excited?
18:25Yes.
18:26Oh, yeah.
18:26I'm ready to go.
18:28I saw Rick out here earlier.
18:29Rick!
18:30We're here today to pick up our BMW motorcycle with sidecar.
18:35When I gave this to Rick, we had taken it apart.
18:38Everything was in bags and boxes.
18:40So I'm very excited to see this.
18:42Rick!
18:43Oh, my God.
18:49Look at that.
18:51Oh, man.
18:53It's a drive-by.
18:55What do you think?
18:56That is unbelievable.
18:57Oh, my God.
18:58When Rick turned a corner, I was 24 again.
19:00I saw the bike.
19:01It was like the first time I saw it in its real glory.
19:07Oh, Rick, this looks great.
19:09Look a little different than it did before?
19:11Wow.
19:11Oh, my God.
19:12Unbelievable.
19:13Unbelievable.
19:14We dropped off, came in a crate.
19:18You're absolutely right.
19:20I was a little leery of a box of parts.
19:22A little leery.
19:23So what we had to do, you know, one of the carburetors, somebody had drilled out one of
19:28the jets, so we had to put a sleeve in there three millimeters thick to hold the jet so it
19:32wouldn't leak.
19:33So we fixed all the carburetors.
19:35Driveline, everything.
19:36I mean, everything on this thing has been gone through.
19:38I mean, every single nut and bolt has come off it.
19:40All the aluminum and all the chrome was pitted and rusted, and it was bad.
19:44It was bad.
19:45So getting stuff all shiny again took a little bit.
19:48A little buffing.
19:49A lot of buffing.
19:51Oh, this is nice, Rick.
19:53Oh, yeah.
19:54The seat was done by our upholsterer, and that is top-grade leather.
19:58That in there is like riding in a Cadillac, that thing.
20:01And I was really worried about the safety.
20:04Yeah.
20:04So we went and did a whole roll cage.
20:06Wow.
20:06I would never have thought to put a roll in there.
20:09Well, what it is is it's that really nice thick wall tubing as to where, and it's three rows
20:14deep, and it's all the way around, and it's got cross braces.
20:18This is incredible.
20:19This is absolutely incredible.
20:20So you guys, you want to ride?
20:22Yeah.
20:22You guys want to ride?
20:23Let's do it.
20:23Let's ride.
20:24All right.
20:26All right.
20:28Good.
20:28Current.
20:29Yeah.
20:32Oh, man.
20:33That's nice.
20:34Hold on.
20:40They look like they're having fun.
20:42Oh, yeah, they do.
20:46Yeah.
20:46Yeah.
20:46Is that like you remembered as a kid?
20:51Yeah.
20:52Crews like a kid.
20:54Right on.
20:55Kind of brings back memories.
20:57It's enough to make a grown man cry.
21:00To look at this and know how much went into it, how long it took to get here.
21:05Thank you, guys.
21:06From father to son, thank you very much.
21:08It was great to see my dad's reaction.
21:10I've never seen him react like that to anything.
21:13He's usually a tough Marine, but I see a couple of tears in his eyes.
21:16It was a good thing to see.
21:18It was definitely worth it.
21:23Get a beer, Kyle.
21:25Sweet Pea.
21:25What you doing up there on that ladder?
21:27You taking down the intercom?
21:29I'm working right now.
21:30You know?
21:31I'm working.
21:31You guys are finished.
21:32You have finished for the day?
21:33You need to leave.
21:35See you later.
21:35Have a great day.
21:37That's a nice nickname you got there.
21:39Kelly was all over the intercom with that.
21:40Yeah?
21:41Oh, that must have been fun.
21:43Baby cakes.
21:43You need any help with that?
21:45Cowboy, I don't need no help with this.
21:47I need you to get the hell out of here.
21:48If you want to come back tomorrow, I don't need no more hard times.
21:51I have to ask her where it came from.
21:55Come on, cowboy.
21:56Beer 30.
21:57That didn't last too long, did it?
21:58Nope.
21:59I have to ask her where it came from.
22:00I have to ask her where it came from.
22:00I have to ask her where it came from.
22:01I have to ask her where it came from.
22:02I have to ask her where it came from.
22:03I have to ask her where it came from.
22:04I have to ask her where it came from.
22:05I have to ask her where it came from.
22:06I have to ask her where it came from.
22:07I have to ask her where it came from.
22:08I have to ask her where it came from.
22:09I have to ask her where it came from.
22:10I have to ask her where it came from.
22:11I have to ask her where it came from.
22:12I have to ask her where it came from.
22:13I have to ask her where it came from.
22:14I have to ask her where it came from.
22:15I have to ask her where it came from.
