00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02Welcome to Paradise.
00:04Ron and I are here at Lonnie's house looking for something we can buy and turn for a profit.
00:07What is that?
00:08This is a Batonville.
00:09Is it Ron?
00:10Sure.
00:10Hey.
00:11I can totally picture my dad's face if Ron and I pulled up to the shop in this thing.
00:14You want to ride this out of here?
00:16Heck yeah.
00:16There's a mutoscope in there.
00:18This is awesome.
00:19The mutoscope was the beginning of the motion picture industry.
00:22She is stuck on being naked.
00:24Oh my God.
00:25I'm on my way to a local museum to look at some items that they'd like to get restored.
00:30I feel like we're going down to the good stuff.
00:32Wow.
00:33This is awesome.
00:35Remember back in the day when things were made by hand and people took pride in their work?
00:40My name is Rick Dale and I bring these things back to life.
00:45Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:49There's no owner's manual for what we do, but there's no job we can't handle.
01:09Hey, how are you?
01:10I'm fine today, how are you?
01:11Great.
01:12What's up this time?
01:13Well, there's a mutoscope in there.
01:15Oh, this is awesome.
01:16Looks heavy though.
01:17We recently restored a really cool 1940s baseball game for the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.
01:22Wow, that is beautiful.
01:23The customer loved it so much, now he's here with another item.
01:27And this thing looks bad.
01:29What is this?
01:30That's cool.
01:31How old do you think this is?
01:33It's got to be 100 years old.
01:35So what's it do?
01:36Well, you put your money in here, you look in here, and you'd spin it, and you'd get to
01:40see yourself a movie.
01:41Mutoscopes have been around since the late 1800s, and we're huge in the early development
01:45of motion pictures.
01:47Oh, it's like a flip book.
01:48Yeah, it's like a flip book.
01:49So like, if you're like this, it's like, oh, I always thought flip books were really
01:54cool, so I'll be the first to admit, this machine's got me pretty intrigued.
01:58Oh, God.
02:00Oh, and we're stuck.
02:01She is stuck on being naked.
02:03You want to see?
02:04Turn it.
02:06Oh, it's Adam and Eve.
02:07It's Adam and Eve, and she's giving them the apple.
02:10Oh, sure, that's what they call it.
02:12That's what's going on.
02:14That's cool.
02:15Yeah, they're fascinating.
02:17How do you want to see this done?
02:18I'd love to see it original.
02:21All right.
02:22I'd say we may have three, four hours in teardown.
02:25Then it'll end up going into sandblasting, and then it'll go into bodywork, and we're
02:28going to have to weld these broken parts, and then it's off to the art shop.
02:32All that together.
02:35$5,500?
02:37I'm like five.
02:40I don't think it's going to be possible with everything going on here.
02:44I don't want to go to where we have to cut a corner, or something's going to suffer.
02:53Well, if you promise not to cut any corners, I think I can live with that.
02:59It's a deal.
02:59Awesome.
03:00Awesome.
03:01All right, Tyler, get in the line.
03:02An extra few hundred dollars.
03:04I wasn't super happy about that, but if it's a first-class job, I'll be very happy.
03:10What is going on here?
03:18Rick asked me to go by our buddy Lonnie's house to see if there's anything worth buying
03:22to fix up.
03:23Being here for five hours and not see everything.
03:26Considering how much stuff this guy has, I asked Tyler to come along to help me out with
03:29the search.
03:30Morning.
03:30How you doing?
03:31Well, fine.
03:32Welcome to Paradise.
03:33Good to see you again.
03:34This place is ridiculous.
03:35Come on down to the garage.
03:36A lot of fun things.
03:37Oh, right on.
03:37We didn't go there last time.
03:38Right on.
03:39Right.
03:39Ron and Tyler came down today to look at my collection of found object art.
03:44This is a Batmobile.
03:46There's a lot of Batmobiles around.
03:48This just happens to be my Batmobile.
03:50This is modeled after a Batmobile on TV?
03:53Yeah.
03:53One of the first ones, right?
03:54Yeah.
03:54Bought it cheap from a guy that needed money.
03:56Nice.
03:57Overheats, goes off the street.
03:59It's the worst car I've ever driven.
04:01I can totally picture my dad's face if Ron and I pulled up to the shop in this thing.
04:06Actually, he'd probably fire us.
04:08Onward.
04:10I want to show you the music room.
04:13This is really Liberace's piano.
04:15Wow.
04:16Which he played honky-tonka.
04:18You see, I liberated a lot of things out of Liberace's warehouse.
04:21Got a lot of other things from people.
04:24This happens to be a knight in armor.
04:27But here's the real test of a manhood.
04:30Tyler, come on.
04:31Now, let's see if you can pull that sucker right out of the stone.
04:39There you go.
04:41Yours is bigger.
04:42Sometimes I love Tyler coming out fix with me because the kid knows how to have a good time.
04:47Here.
04:47Yeah.
04:48Let's see what you can do.
04:49Oh, that was mine.
04:50Yeah, now it was bigger.
04:52See, you'll never reach me.
04:54Hello.
04:54What, hey?
05:06Some guy from the museum's on the phone for you.
05:13Thanks.
05:15Hello, this is Rick.
05:17Hi, Rick.
05:17This is Chandler Ross.
05:18You're a director of the Mojave Museum.
05:20How are you doing?
05:21Oh, good, good, good.
05:22How are you?
05:23Well, we have artifacts that we want to restore.
05:26Okay.
05:27A few of those items that we would like your expertise on.
05:30It's not every day that I get museums calling me up to take a look at rare, historical items that
05:35they want to get restored.
05:37I'll come down and take a look.
05:38Okay, well, thank you very much.
05:40Bye.
05:40Bye-bye.
05:41As busy as we are here at the shop, this is a great opportunity to make new contacts and possibly
05:46get to restore something for a local museum.
05:49While I'm gone, it'll be up to my guys to keep things running smooth.
05:59Hey, cowboy, check this thing out.
06:02A customer just dropped off this old cast metal machine.
06:05That is wicked.
06:06Now, Rick is having cowboy and I chaired apart.
06:08It looks like a nightmare, Kyle.
06:10The thing with cast, it's very hard to weld back together, so we need to make sure nothing snaps or
06:14hits the ground.
06:15It says patent November-95, so that had to have been 1895.
06:19Some company on New York made it.
06:21New York City?
06:23Yank it up there.
06:28Come on, Kyle.
06:30Let me give you a hand here, buddy.
06:34It's a heavy little sucker.
06:36This place is ridiculous.
06:38Ron and I are still here at Lonnie's house looking for something we can buy in turn for a profit.
06:41The problem is there's just too much cool stuff here.
06:44Look around.
06:45See what you've got.
06:45Anything you want to restore.
06:47Tiki head.
06:48What's that behind, though?
06:49It's that bike-looking thing.
06:50Hey, Lonnie, it's like a bike tucked back here.
06:52Can I bring this out?
06:53Absolutely.
06:56Oh, God.
06:57Oh, God.
06:58It's a tin.
06:58Don't hit me with it.
07:00Go.
07:00Got it.
07:02Thanks for the help, Tyler.
07:03Finding the old bicycle built for two, huh?
07:05Yeah.
07:06It's old.
07:07Where'd you get it?
07:08From a guy at a yard sale.
07:09I just thought, oh, tell me it's so fun, we'll put it together, we'll do it, and we'll ride
07:13around the neighborhood.
07:14Yeah.
07:14Never happened.
07:15I think this is something we could work with.
07:16This is a pretty sweet ride.
07:18I know Tana bikes have been around since the late 1800s, and they were real popular in the
07:231960s.
07:23We need this bike.
07:26How much did you get rid of it for?
07:28Oh, I think $250, I think.
07:31I think that's a bit high because it's got no seats and no handlebars.
07:34$250 is a little high, man.
07:36I think we could do like one.
07:38Tell you what.
07:41$100, but then you've got to bring it back, show it to me when it's all fixed up.
07:46How's that for a deal?
07:47That sounds pretty good.
07:48All right?
07:49Sounds good.
07:49It took a while, but we finally found something worth taking back to the shop with us.
07:54And for only $100, this should definitely put a smile on Rick's face when he sees it.
07:58Steer, man.
07:59Steer.
07:59Oh, Lord.
08:00I'm going to get out.
08:02I'm cramped.
08:05I'm on my way to a local museum.
08:07This is a great opportunity to make new contacts.
08:10This came out of our local telephone company.
08:12Holy crap.
08:13Talk about a wiring nightmare.
08:16So how'd it go to Lonnie's?
08:17It was good.
08:17We found this really cool, like, 50s tandem bike.
08:20Let me see it.
08:20The thing is, I already got it torn down.
08:32Right now, I'm on my way to a local museum to look at some items that they'd like to get
08:36appraised
08:37and possibly get restored.
08:41Hey.
08:42It must be Rick.
08:43Yes.
08:43I'm Shannon.
08:44How are you doing?
08:44Great to meet you.
08:45Good having you.
08:46Vic Key, this is Rick.
08:47Hi, Nick.
08:48Great to meet you.
08:49You going to show me around?
08:51Yeah.
08:51Our museum carries many artifacts from Mojave County, a lot of it dealing with Route 66.
08:58I feel like we're going down to the good stuff.
09:00We are.
09:00I can feel it.
09:01Wow.
09:02This is awesome.
09:04Thanks.
09:05Okay, well, one of the items that we've been wanting to get an idea of restoring, I have
09:09an old dentist chair with the actual foot pedal drill.
09:13This is very, very high end.
09:15All the gold leafing they put, I mean, look at how much work they did.
09:18It's like this wicker back.
09:19It was an expensive chair.
09:21This thing has more paint on it.
09:24Excuse me.
09:25Excuse me.
09:27Yeah, sorry.
09:28It's my son.
09:29I'll call him back in a minute.
09:30Okay.
09:31So, Rick, is this something you could do in your shop?
09:33Oh, yeah.
09:33Not a problem at all.
09:34Dentist chairs run right around 4,500 and do it.
09:38Totally.
09:38Okay.
09:38I wanted to show you something else over here.
09:41This came out of our local telephone company.
09:44Oh, yeah.
09:44I think it's probably 40s.
09:47Oh, my God.
09:48Talk about a wiring nightmare.
09:50Well, how about doing something like getting one line working?
09:54Right.
09:55Hold on a second.
09:56Excuse me.
09:58Yes.
10:01Come on.
10:03Ron and I just got back from lines with the tandem bike, and I want to get started on it,
10:07but my dad's not answering his phone.
10:08If there's one thing I've learned from him, it's you don't let an item sit around,
10:12because that doesn't make any money.
10:13If he's not going to answer the phone, then I'll call the shots around here one day anyways,
10:17so I guess I might as well just get it going through the line.
10:21So, if you were to restore this with one line working?
10:24I'd probably do that for two grand total.
10:28Okay.
10:28Yeah.
10:29So far, I'm really impressed with what they have here.
10:32I mean, just being able to take a close-up view of this stuff before it goes on display
10:36is worth the trip.
10:37And if I get the chance to restore one of these things, it'll totally make my day.
10:46You want to start on the crank so I'll get the wheels off?
10:49That sounds good to me.
10:51Tyler came in and told Cowboy and I to start tearing down the tandem bike, Kim, and Ron Bob.
10:55You ever rode one of these, Cowboy?
10:57It's not my style, Kyle.
11:04Voila.
11:06I need needless.
11:07While Kyle and Cowboy finish getting the tandem bike apart,
11:10we still have got other restorations we have to keep working on.
11:12So now, Ron and I are going to get the mech inside this butoscope torn down.
11:16Let's take a picture of that out before we take it to Florida.
11:23Winner.
11:24Winner.
11:24They're sweet.
11:29One of the other items we have is an original wheelchair that was built out of airplane parts after the
11:36war.
11:36Wow.
11:38Oh, with a B-17 seat, followed by a 12-volt battery.
11:41Yeah, this is very cool.
11:42Somebody took parts from a World War II airplane and made it into a functioning wheelchair.
11:47Now, that's what I call American ingenuity.
11:50This is something that's one of a kind.
11:53There's so much history to that.
11:54Just the guy's thought, how his head came to this.
11:57Since you haven't seen one of these before, how would you price this out?
12:00Um, you're looking at $1,800 to $2,500, make it all done up, do it up military style, and
12:06I think it'd be cool.
12:08Well, thank you, Rick. It's really good to know.
12:10This museum is really cool.
12:12Not only did I get to look at some really cool stuff, it may also lead to some more work
12:16at the shop.
12:23Since my dad isn't here and won't answer his phone for whatever reason, I'm moving forward with the tandem bike.
12:28I already had Kyle and Cowboy tear it down. Now, Brentley and I are working on getting it sanded.
12:34Meanwhile, Phil is taking care of all the body work for the mutoscope.
12:37This mutoscope has a lot of cracks in the metal, so we have to weld them up and smooth it
12:42out by grinding before we can send it to paint.
12:44Grinding it smooth without ruining the detail is really tough.
12:56It's about time you're back.
12:58Way to answer your phone.
13:00Oh, man, I was busy.
13:01So, how'd it go at Lonnie's?
13:02It was good. I mean, we looked around, found some okay stuff, and then we found this really cool, like,
13:0750s tandem bike, like a two-seater bike. It's awesome.
13:09That sounds awesome.
13:10Yeah, it's really good.
13:11That sounds awesome. Let me see it.
13:12Well, the thing is, we already, well, I already got it torn down.
13:16You already tore it apart?
13:17Yeah.
13:17And I didn't get to even see it?
13:19Ron saw it. He was with me.
13:21Oh, man.
13:21I'm not quite sure what this bozo son of mine was thinking, but this is definitely not cool.
13:27If you're going to go and buy something, rip something down, then now you've got to follow it through the
13:31line.
13:32All right.
13:32All right. I'll do it.
13:34Watch.
13:34All right.
13:35Wait till it's at the end, and it's this gem.
13:37We'll see.
13:38All right.
13:38Get back to work.
13:39Just don't send me to Lonnie's anymore. I can't handle that.
13:51One of the things that make the Mutascope a great piece of Americana is the exterior detail work.
13:57Now that I've given it a base coat, Ted is adding all the flourishes.
14:00With all the detail that's on this, if we weren't careful and you tried to paint every detail on here
14:05a different color,
14:06this thing's just going to look crazy by the time it's done.
14:08So we want to keep it to around four colors.
14:12Now time to go get the next one.
14:21The tandem bike project is moving along.
14:24I think I'm getting the hang of being the boss.
14:26Next up on the process sheet is getting this thing painted.
14:28I didn't find all the parts I needed in the boneyard, so I ordered all the missing parts,
14:32along with brand new street cruiser seats, which I got upholstered to match.
14:36Ted was already at the shop for the Mutascope project, so I figured since he was here,
14:40I'd have him add a little pizzazz to the tandem bike.
14:42Now I just have to put this thing together.
14:45Hey-oh.
14:54My name is Tyler, and I'm the master.
15:07Tyler's been spearheading this tandem bike restoration ever since he decided to start this project
15:11before I could even get to look it over.
15:13He's actually done a hell of a job on this thing, and it turned out just beautiful.
15:17Now we're bringing it back to Lonnie's to show him and his wife.
15:20And man, I really want to see him ride this thing.
15:26Hey, Lonnie.
15:26Well, hi, Rick.
15:27How you doing?
15:28Just fine.
15:29Oh, it's a beautiful day today.
15:31Yeah, it is.
15:31This is my wife, Sandy.
15:33Hi, Sandy.
15:33Hi, Rick.
15:34Nice to meet you.
15:34Good to meet you.
15:35I got something to show you.
15:36Remember what I called you about?
15:37Yeah, let's go look at it.
15:38Okay, let's go out this way.
15:40Rick and Tyler are coming by to show us the bicycle which they restored.
15:44Rick said it's beautiful, but we'll see when we get through.
15:48Why are you hiding it?
15:49I've seen it before.
15:50I want to see it now.
15:52Yeah, I know you've seen it before, but it looks a little different, so I want you guys
15:55to really be prepared, all right?
15:57Let's see.
15:57All right, here we go.
15:58I'm all under it.
15:59One, two, three.
16:03Wow.
16:04It's beautiful.
16:05It's beautiful.
16:06It's not the same bike.
16:07It's gorgeous.
16:08How did you turn that piece of junk into this beautiful specimen?
16:12Well, I mean, what we ended up doing is we had to...
16:15You can let me tell him.
16:16What did you do?
16:18Um...
16:18Yeah, go ahead.
16:19All right, well, I had a couple guys in our shop, tear it down.
16:23We had the whole frame sandblasted and then shot it blue.
16:26We had the seat reupholstered and all this is white and all this is blue to match the bike.
16:30We had all the undercarriage of the seat chrome-plated, so everything's nice and shiny.
16:36These hand grips are originally from the 50s.
16:38And we found you a new headlight, so you could really ride in the dark if you really wanted to.
16:42And then this is the original plate.
16:44We left old-looking and had it clear-coated, so, I mean, it gives you a little bit of that
16:48patina.
16:49Just beautiful.
16:50Uh-huh.
16:51Well, I think we're going to have to try it out, Sandy.
16:55How's your eyes?
16:56You always do.
16:58I've never ridden a tandem bike before, so this ought to be very interesting.
17:02Okay, this is a little difficult, okay?
17:04Come on, now.
17:05I've ridden a bike before.
17:06All right.
17:07Oh, man.
17:08You have to get your hands both feet on the pedal first.
17:12That's right.
17:13Okay.
17:14Whoa, whoa, whoa.
17:17Okay.
17:18All right.
17:19I've had it.
17:20Riding the tandem bike was more difficult than I thought it was going to be.
17:22It's difficult to steer.
17:24Both feet on the pedal first.
17:25That's right.
17:26I didn't dare say anything back there because she doesn't take direction well.
17:32No chair.
17:33No chair.
17:34Whoa, whoa, whoa.
17:36What do you think?
17:38We definitely both need more practice before we can start tandem biking.
17:41That's for sure.
17:43All right, well, I definitely wanted you to see it.
17:45Sure.
17:46I wanted you guys to get the opportunity to ride it.
17:48You know, we made a deal with you, or Tyler did.
17:50Sure.
17:50You know, it came from here, and I wanted you to be the first one to ride it.
17:53Okay?
17:54Beautiful.
17:54So thank you very much.
17:55It was wonderful.
17:56I'm really proud of the job Tyler did on this restoration, and I have no doubt that we're going to
18:01find the right collector that's going to want to buy it.
18:03In the meantime, I had a lot of fun watching Lonnie and his wife take it for a test drive.
18:08Hey, Charles.
18:09Oh, Rick.
18:09How are you doing?
18:10I came to Rick's restoration today to pick up my munoscope.
18:14All right.
18:14You ready?
18:15Absolutely.
18:15All right.
18:16One, two, three.
18:18Well, this is just like noon.
18:20Ready?
18:20Yeah.
18:20Let's go.
18:21Push.
18:23Okay, going right.
18:25Going right.
18:26Going right.
18:26Are you going to turn?
18:27I'm turning.
18:28Woo!
18:37This is the left.
18:40Just like that.
18:41All of the pieces of the munoscope are ready.
18:44Now, Kyle and Cowboy are putting it together.
18:46I can't wait to show it to the customer.
18:49I hope he's as happy with the transformation as I am.
18:53Come on.
18:53Get in there.
18:56Nice.
19:05There's somebody here.
19:06All right.
19:07There's somebody here.
19:07Let's go ahead.
19:07Push down.
19:10Hey, Charles.
19:11Well, Rick.
19:11How are you doing?
19:12How you doing?
19:13How you doing?
19:13Well, I've been fine, thank you.
19:14Good to see you.
19:15I came to Rick's restoration today to pick up my munoscope.
19:19It looked like a tough job, so I hope Rick got this restored so I can get back to the
19:23boardwalk where it belongs.
19:25All right.
19:26You ready?
19:26Absolutely.
19:27All right.
19:27One, two, three.
19:30Wow.
19:31Well, this is just like noon, Rick.
19:33When I first saw the machine, it was exciting.
19:36It looked brand new, and the colors Rick chose were really outstanding.
19:40What do you think?
19:41It's beautiful.
19:43It's more than I expected.
19:45There's a lot of hand painting.
19:47You've got all this pinstriping on here, all these, you know, all this color and everything,
19:51and then the Indian head on the bottom.
19:53I mean, this stuff, this is very cool looking.
19:55I mean, where you've got a brave on this side, and on this side, you've got a chief.
19:59You know, this piece here was basically a piece of flattened steel on there, so we
20:02ended up recasting this for you.
20:04The munoscope ID plate on there, this is a beautiful piece, and it tells the story of
20:08it.
20:09The inside, all this mechanism in here that makes it work was pretty tricky.
20:14I mean, there's a gear behind it, and now when you put the coin in, and you turn it,
20:17it lights up, you can see it, and it builds the story.
20:21Well, it's very beautiful to look at, but we brought it down with an Adam and Eve movie
20:26in there that still worked.
20:27Yeah, it still works, but we ended up changing it out, and went to a fight scene, something
20:33a little more, you know, an Adam and Eve movie.
20:35Plus sex, which is his fault.
20:39Well, it's perfect.
20:40Here, check it out, check it out.
20:42Okay, let's take a look at it.
20:44See if you can get into the fighting movie.
20:45Okay, let's do that.
20:50Well, there is a movie going on.
20:53Looks like a fight in the bar.
20:55Over a chick.
20:56Over a chick.
20:57Nice.
20:58Yeah, that's typical.
21:02Well, that's a great show.
21:03I can't wait to put it on display down at the boardwalk.
21:06Good, I'm glad.
21:07Yeah, I'm proud of it.
21:08It came out real nice.
21:09Rick always does a nice job, and, uh, well, I'm just excited that the machine is not only
21:15beautiful, but it's really a piece of working history.
21:20Let's go for a ride.
21:21I didn't get a chance to ride it, so.
21:23I don't want to scratch it, though.
21:24Come on.
21:25Please, babe, come on.
21:26All right, for you.
21:27Okay, good, thanks.
21:28All right.
21:28Ready?
21:29Yeah.
21:29Let's go.
21:29Push.
21:30Oh!
21:31Doing good.
21:33Doing good.
21:33Oh, we could do this.
21:35We'll get in shape.
21:36This is fun.
21:37I'm loving it.
21:38I think we should keep this bike.
21:40You like it?
21:41Yeah.
21:42Ring the bell, babe.
21:42Watch your car.
21:43Watch your car, baby.
21:44You see the car?
21:45Ding, ding, ding.
21:46Okay, going right.
21:47Woo-hoo!
21:47Going right, going right, turn right.
21:49Are you going to turn?
21:49I'm turning!
21:51Woo!
21:52Woo!
21:52Good.
21:53Good.
