00:00An American restoration.
00:02It's 30 feet tall.
00:03My god.
00:04I came down to get my rocket slide fixed.
00:06Look at the size of this thing.
00:07Why is it apart?
00:08Well, I thought I could do it myself.
00:10I don't even know where to start.
00:12Somebody call Mr. Wizard.
00:13Oh, wow.
00:14That thing's cool.
00:15I don't want you just to restore this pump.
00:17We want you to turn this into a coin counter as well.
00:19Wow.
00:20You want me to cut it?
00:21Split it all apart.
00:22Correct.
00:23I got to nearly triple the size of this thing.
00:25It's going to be impossible.
00:26Yeah, man.
00:27You're killing me, dude.
00:28No.
00:29You can't just nail me like that.
00:30That's wrong.
00:31This rocket slide has been a huge pain in the ass.
00:34When it rains, it pours.
00:36There's no way you're going to be able to get in the hole
00:38before it wants to kill one of us.
00:39Shut up and listen.
00:40Pull.
00:41Pull, boys.
00:42Don't get too close, Dave.
00:44What?
00:47Remember back in the day when things were made by hand
00:50and people took pride in their work?
00:52My name's Rick Dale, and I bring these things back to life.
00:57Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
01:01There's no owner's manual for what we do,
01:03but there's no job we can't handle.
01:18Hey, babe.
01:19What's up?
01:20I think the rocket slide guy is here, and he brought it in a moving truck.
01:24Oh, my God.
01:25Look at that mess.
01:27Thanks, Kelly.
01:28We recently got a call from a guy that wants us to look at some sort of fly that he wants to get restored.
01:33Judging by the looks of this guy's truck, this thing is a lot bigger than I was expecting.
01:38Holy .
01:40Hey, Rick.
01:41Nels.
01:42Nels, good to meet you.
01:43You know, I heard this thing was coming.
01:45I had no idea it was this big.
01:47It's 30 feet tall.
01:48Wow.
01:4930 feet tall, and it's all what, in pieces?
01:52Oh, yeah.
01:53There's a lot of pieces.
01:54Cowboy, Tyler, Bradley, get over here.
01:56I need some hands.
01:57I came down to Rick's restoration today to get my Apollo-era 1969 rocket slide fixed.
02:04The thing is huge, and there's a lot of different types of pieces.
02:08One, two, three.
02:11Get on, Tyler.
02:12Get underneath.
02:13Nice and easy, boys.
02:16Hey.
02:17Oh, my gosh.
02:18This thing is the biggest thing that's ever came in the shop.
02:20Look at the size of this thing.
02:21When this guy called me and told me he was dropping off a slide, I figured no problem.
02:26But I didn't expect something that was potentially three stories tall.
02:30Not to mention that it's in nearly 50 different pieces, and I have no idea what it's supposed to look like.
02:36One of my first questions is, why is it apart?
02:39Well, I thought I could do it myself, so I thought it's going to have to come apart if it's going to be done right.
02:44Got you.
02:45Yeah, well, you got the process down, that's for sure.
02:48But we usually take pictures of stuff as we tear it apart, and that's our manual.
02:52When stuff comes in in a million pieces, it's like we got no manual at all.
02:55Well, I got a nice original brochure from the company.
02:58Whoa.
02:59This is all you got to work on.
03:00This is what, 60s?
03:01Yeah, Apollo-era 1960s.
03:03In the 60s, the space race was a huge part of American culture.
03:08Rides like this were popular because all the kids loved to pretend that they were astronauts,
03:13either landing on the moon or taking a ride to Mars.
03:16What pieces are missing?
03:17Because it's very hard to tell right now.
03:19Uh, we got support poles here.
03:21We're going to need 42 of those.
03:23I brought one of them as a sample.
03:25I thought it'd be easier if you just remanufactured them.
03:27They're in pretty bad shape.
03:29You left them at home?
03:30Yep.
03:31These, yeah, man, you're killing me, dude.
03:33Somebody call Mr. Wizard.
03:35It's a lot of work.
03:36Well, I can see a huge challenge for me here.
03:39Big time.
03:40I mean, you can tell somebody took it apart with a torch.
03:42So they've blown holes out.
03:43So there's a lot of repair.
03:45Uh, the making of some molds.
03:47Uh, you know, the...
03:49All right?
03:50Just take a, take a deep breath.
03:52I really, I'm like at a loss.
03:57I don't even know where to start.
03:59When people come in, I need to be able to give them some kind of a close quote.
04:03This thing, I mean, quite honestly, it's got me baffled.
04:06I'm overwhelmed.
04:07I have no clue.
04:08So can you get me any kind of price on this?
04:11Well, um, I think I ride around $15,000.
04:17$15,000 is really pushing the top of my budget.
04:22But I want it done right.
04:24And I think we're just going to have to go forward.
04:27It's the moon or bust.
04:28Ha, ha, ha.
04:29Ha, ha, ha.
04:30I like that.
04:31All right, bud.
04:32Thanks.
04:33Take care.
04:34It's such a big project.
04:35I think Rick is a little bit taken aback.
04:37It worries me a little bit that, uh, at this point, I don't think he knows exactly how it's
04:41gonna get it done.
04:42But I'm hoping when I come back that this will be all ready and it's gonna blast off to the moon
04:46and that'd blow up on the launch pad.
04:48What did I just get myself into?
04:59Let's do this .
05:01This thing's enormous, man.
05:02I know.
05:03It's giant.
05:04First thing we gotta do is tear the rest of this thing apart immediately.
05:07That way we can inventory all the parts and come up with a game plan on how we're gonna
05:11get this thing put back together.
05:13The more efficient we can be, the more likely we're gonna finish on time and stay within
05:18budget.
05:19Eww!
05:20A halfway thing my dad has lost his mind taking on a project this big.
05:30But he's the boss, so we all just gotta bust ass and hopefully pull this off.
05:34Get it off of there and let's go.
05:36Yeah!
05:37Hallelujah!
05:38This rocket slide is definitely keeping us busy.
05:53And now I'm meeting up with another customer and I just hope that this project isn't very
05:59complicated.
06:00How you doing?
06:01Good.
06:02Jeremy O'Brien.
06:03Good to meet you.
06:04That is a really, really nice bike.
06:06But I don't think you're really wanting that restored right now, are you?
06:08No, it's brand new.
06:09Didn't you get a package?
06:10Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:11It's over here.
06:12Customers send me projects all the time and normally I like to take a look at it before
06:16they get there.
06:17But I haven't had one free moment to look at this thing.
06:20Check it out.
06:21Oh, wow.
06:22That thing's cool.
06:24Watch out, Wayne 60.
06:25Wow.
06:26This is probably what, 1935, 37, somewhere in there?
06:30Somewhere in that range.
06:31Yeah.
06:32These are cool.
06:33Wayne was a big deal because at that time, gas pumps had clock faces.
06:36All they really showed you was how many gallons you got.
06:39Wayne came up with the first computing pump.
06:42A computing pump is basically what this is.
06:44And what this does, when you go up and you get your gas, now it's gonna give you everything.
06:48How many gallons and the total sale.
06:50Okay.
06:51We restore a lot of gas pumps.
06:53So this project is perfect for my guys to handle on their own so that I can focus on
06:57that rocket slide.
06:58So, you want this thing all original on the outside?
07:01It's still aesthetically original.
07:03What do you mean?
07:04I don't want you just to restore this pump.
07:06I want you to turn this into a coin counter as well.
07:09Coin counter?
07:10What's a coin counter?
07:11What's a coin counter?
07:12Well, I work for a bank and we'd put it in our lobby and we'd be able to have our customers
07:16come in and deposit their coins in it.
07:18Holy crap.
07:19Well, how big is it?
07:22The coin counter?
07:23Is it wider than the pump?
07:24A little bit.
07:25Is it deeper than the pump?
07:27A little bit.
07:28So what you're saying is you want me to cut it, slice it down the side, split it all
07:34apart, slice it down the front and open it up big enough to put this thing in?
07:39Correct.
07:40Wow.
07:41All right, so for the total restoration, I'm looking between $5,800 to about $6,300.
07:51That much, huh?
07:53Yeah, it's quite a bit of work.
07:55It's not just a regular restoration for sure.
07:57It's not.
07:58But I guarantee you that you're going to love it.
08:01I guarantee that.
08:03We can make that work.
08:08Okay, cool.
08:09Let's go in the office and take care of some payports.
08:11No matter how busy we may be, the last thing that I'm going to do is turn away this job.
08:16The only problem is I just don't know how I'm going to pull off two major projects at the
08:21same exact time.
08:26Now that we've got the Coin County pump to worry about, I'm really going to need the
08:33total help of all my crew, especially from my new foreman, Tyler.
08:38So it's going to be up to him to follow this rocket slide down the line so that we can stay
08:42on schedule.
08:43Hey, Nate.
08:44How's it going?
08:45What's going on, Tyler?
08:46Our sandblast room can't fit something this big.
08:48And if we sandblast outside, a dust cloud will go everywhere.
08:51So we brought someone in to try a different method called ice blasting.
08:54What do you use?
08:56Holy...
08:57We use dry ice.
08:58Blasting rice is what they call it.
09:00Uh-huh.
09:01Or a rice pellet.
09:02It'll burn you if you hold onto it a little bit too long, so we're using gloves and the
09:05safety equipment we need.
09:06Nice.
09:07About the hardness of a fingernail.
09:09Yeah?
09:10On the diamond scale.
09:11Wow.
09:12So it's tough enough to get it done when we push as much air as we do, but it's soft
09:16enough not to damage anything.
09:17Man, that's just badass.
09:22The best part about this is the dry ice totally evaporates.
09:25So all we have to do is sweep up the paint chips when we're done.
09:28No must, no fuss.
09:3237 inches is what we're looking for.
09:34Okay?
09:35We're making a new base to support the weight of this gas pump.
09:37And if our measurements are just a little bit off, this whole thing could come toppling
09:41down.
09:42Look at 39.
09:43I just can't catch a break this week.
09:46This has to go in the hole.
09:48So we need something 40, 50, 60 foot long, which I don't know what we're going to use.
09:52This rocket slide is getting so far behind schedule.
09:55Tether it up.
09:56I think all six of us are just going to lift it up.
09:58There's no way.
09:59It's like 700 pounds.
10:00That's definitely not going to work.
10:02I'm almost out of ideas.
10:15Tyler, bring the toolbox.
10:17We got a ton of work going on on this rocket slide that a customer dropped off earlier.
10:21But that's not the only thing we got going on here.
10:24Another customer dropped off this old gas pump that he wants converted into a coin counter.
10:29These are both very challenging projects.
10:32And it really doesn't help for them both to come in at the same time.
10:35I mean, you know, when it rains, it just pours.
10:38What is this?
10:39This is a coin counter.
10:41And we got to make a bunch of marks on it.
10:43Because this has to go inside here.
10:46That's right.
10:47And it's too narrow.
10:49It's too everything.
10:50It's too narrow.
10:51So we got to cut it up.
10:52Okay?
10:53Because the coin counter is longer and wider than the original pump,
10:56we're going to make some marks on it before we even tear it down.
10:58So when it gets back from sandblasting, the marks will still be there.
11:01And we can figure out exactly where the coin counter's got to go.
11:04All right.
11:05Watch very carefully, son.
11:06Okay.
11:07I'm ready.
11:12Okay.
11:13Were you paying attention?
11:14Yeah.
11:15Good.
11:16Your turn.
11:17Good.
11:18Because that line was crooked.
11:19What are you talking about?
11:20Let's see how you do.
11:23Yeah.
11:24That's much straighter.
11:25It's good.
11:26It's much straighter than mine.
11:27Where's the black?
11:28Exactly.
11:29I'll give it to you.
11:30Yeah.
11:31It's a mark.
11:32That's all we really need.
11:33Exactly.
11:34Because once we get it done blasting, those marks are still going to be there.
11:35Yeah.
11:36And then we're going to start cutting up.
11:37I got stuff to do.
11:38Go ahead and finish this out.
11:39Thanks, Dad.
11:40So nice.
11:50Earlier, a customer brought in a 30-foot rocket slide that was missing a bunch of pieces.
11:55We're going to need 42 support poles here.
11:58These, yeah, man, you're killing me, dude.
12:01In addition to all the body work that we got on this, I also have my guys making over 40
12:07new poles that are going to structurally hold this whole thing together.
12:12Meanwhile, now that all the parts to the gas pump have been sandblasted, Phil is using
12:18the marks that Tyler and I made earlier to split this thing apart.
12:21Because the pump is too small to fit the coin counter in, we only have one choice, and
12:25that's to make the pump bigger.
12:27So Dave and I are going to get started on the base and the frame that support the whole
12:31thing.
12:32All right.
12:33All right.
12:34Ready?
12:35Wow.
12:36That is making it huge.
12:37I mean, that thing was originally like this by this.
12:40The biggest challenge we're going to have is changing the structural integrity of it.
12:44So we need to make something that's going to support the half a ton.
12:47This thing's going to weigh.
12:48Here we go.
12:5537 inches is what we're looking for.
12:57Okay.
12:58We got 39.
12:59That's definitely not square.
13:02Oh, yeah.
13:03And we already started welding the thing.
13:06Nothing's friggin' easy this week.
13:08That's going to be a deal.
13:09Um, what's this?
13:1025 and 5 eighths.
13:12Everything starts with a foundation.
13:15If our measurements are even a millimeter off, the whole thing could topple over when
13:20we're finished.
13:21If we don't come up with a solution fast, we're going to have to start all over on this
13:24project, and we just don't have time for that.
13:27Oh, boy.
13:37While I have my hands full with this gas pump, there's still a ton of work to be done with
13:41this rocket slide.
13:42This thing is turning into a nightmare.
13:44I don't want to hit it too hard, but these are pretty hammered, so...
13:47Yeah, they are.
13:48This slide looks like it got shot down by the Death Star.
13:51It's so beat up.
13:53This metal is also real thin, so we have to take our time and get all the dents, bumps,
13:58and dings out one at a time.
14:01All right, let's grab some clamps and start tying these sides down.
14:04All right.
14:05Dave and I are still trying to figure out how to get the base of this gas pump perfectly
14:10square like it needs to be.
14:11You're about a sixteenth under.
14:14That's a sixteenth of an inch.
14:17Yeah, that's good right there.
14:18Good?
14:19In order to compensate for our measurements being off, we're tying the whole thing down
14:24and then slightly adjusting each side, and then hoping for the best.
14:28Okay.
14:29Okay, you got 45 and a quarter.
14:35Oh, you're right on.
14:3745 and a quarter.
14:38Get this bad boy tacked up.
14:40This project has got us so far behind.
14:43But now that we got the measurements on it, it feels like we can start making progress
14:46on this thing.
14:47I just hope nothing else holds us up.
14:49It's like welding the Grand Canyon together.
15:03Hell yeah.
15:06I got so many big projects going on right now.
15:09I'm going to have to get some help with this rocket slide.
15:12This fiberglass guy across town, he just may be the guy that saves my ass and make these deadlines.
15:18Hey, JR.
15:19What's going on?
15:20How you been?
15:21All right.
15:22I really do not like farming stuff out.
15:24But sometimes in my business, it's smarter to outsource unique stuff like this rather than buy all the equipment and employ a full-time guy like JR.
15:32I do all sorts of fiberglass repair, design, creation, anything in fiberglass.
15:36Okay.
15:37On the slide, what are you going to have to do to this piece?
15:39Well, I see some issues down here where it's cracked.
15:41Okay.
15:42And it looks thin.
15:43This is that thin.
15:45Okay.
15:46So on the backside, I would add some more fiberglass, make the whole thing a little more rigid.
15:51Okay.
15:52And then on the front side, after we grind out and fix all these stress cracks, repair those.
15:56All right.
15:57Then after you glass it, you reshape it back smooth again with the rest of it and then shoot the gel coat.
16:01Gotcha.
16:02So you're going to a clean surface and then starting over.
16:04Yeah.
16:05Gotcha.
16:06All right.
16:07So this is the fiberglass that everybody thinks of.
16:09People associate that fiberglass and plastic are the same kind of elements.
16:12They're not.
16:13A sheet of fiberglass is probably ten times the cost.
16:15Each one of them fibers, there's 90 filaments.
16:18You break that apart.
16:19There's 90 hairs in there.
16:20Wow.
16:21That's glass, basically.
16:22That is glass.
16:23So this is beach sand.
16:24It's pulverized under high heat, melted down.
16:25Man.
16:26People underestimate the amount of work that is required.
16:28It's not cheap.
16:29The material's expensive and the things that you have to do to work with it, everything's harder
16:33to do.
16:34And as far as price?
16:35I mean, I don't know if you can right now, but can you give me like a ballpark?
16:40Or no?
16:41I'd like to think about it some more.
16:43You're going to need to look at it.
16:44I need to look at it, yeah.
16:45All right.
16:46Okay.
16:47I'm going to have to trust this guy to stay within my budget.
16:50He's really going to have to try to get this thing done fast.
16:52So that we can still finish this project when the customer is expecting it.
17:05All right.
17:06How's it going?
17:07Good.
17:08I'm needing to see this thing lit up.
17:09I'm needing to see it working.
17:10Now that we're back on track with the rocket slide, we still have to finish up with this
17:15coin counting pump.
17:16Everything's pretty much together, but we don't even know if this thing works.
17:19Posey, you ready for that?
17:20Yeah.
17:21Yes.
17:22I'm hoping that we did this right.
17:23It looks pretty good, but I'm worried about those, you know, the numbers lighting up.
17:27Are you ready, Rick?
17:28I am ready.
17:29After all the time and effort that we've put into this pump, if this thing doesn't turn
17:34up, I don't know what we're going to do.
17:39Nice!
17:40We got it!
17:41We got a few more final things to do on it, some touch-up things, and this thing's done.
17:44So we go ahead and finish those pieces, and we'll get this thing to the customer.
17:47All right?
17:48Awesome.
17:49Cool, cool, cool.
17:50It looks awesome.
17:51It's a wrap.
17:52Hey!
17:53How you doing, Rick?
17:54What have you been doing?
17:55Well, you know, a little banking here and there.
18:10Hey, Dave!
18:11Came down to Rick's restoration today to pick up my gas pump that I had Rick convert into
18:15a coin counter for my bank.
18:16You sort of noticed it's a little bigger, right?
18:18Yeah.
18:19I'll tell you right now, this was hard.
18:21It was like building a hot rod and slicing it into six sections and having it all come
18:26out and work at one time.
18:27It's just, it was, I can't even tell you.
18:29So, you ready?
18:30I'm ready.
18:31Let's see it.
18:32Because this thing took a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot of time.
18:34I'm ready.
18:35Okay, here we go, Dave.
18:36One, two, three!
18:40Wow!
18:42It's amazing!
18:43Look at those colors!
18:44That's awesome!
18:45Wow!
18:46Yeah, it came out nice.
18:47I'm proud of it.
18:48You proud of it?
18:49I'm happy it's done.
18:50Yeah, me too.
18:51That's a fact.
18:52You don't even know what the week's been like.
18:53This was hard.
18:54I can't even tell you.
18:55Everything on this thing has been hand fabricated.
18:58Everything on it.
18:59We knew we had to get that coin pump inside the machine itself.
19:02Basically what I did is to cut it in quarters.
19:03Okay.
19:04And stretch it out all four ways.
19:05These are brand new doors made from scratch.
19:07These side pieces, we split them in half and we added 10 inches into them.
19:11Okay.
19:12And we cut up the computer in here to get your LCD screen in there.
19:14That's fantastic.
19:15Yeah, it looks good now, but what a nightmare it was to do that.
19:18Awesome.
19:19Well, it looks great.
19:20Does it work?
19:21Yeah, let's give it a shot.
19:24All right.
19:25So up here is going to read.
19:26Okay.
19:27So you come up, dump your money in there.
19:33How about that?
19:34Pretty good, huh?
19:35All right.
19:36It's more than I expected.
19:37Fantastic job.
19:38You guys are great.
19:39All right.
19:40Okay.
19:42Well, let's go in the office.
19:43All right.
19:44Take care of the paperwork.
19:45Dave, uh...
19:46I'm getting my money back.
19:47Okay.
19:48All right.
19:51What's going on?
19:52I have something good to restore.
19:53Well, let's see what you got.
19:54Okay, wait.
19:55I'm so busy right now, I don't know if I can take any more on.
19:58God dang, that is gnarly.
20:00I needed to know a price quite a while back.
20:02Uh, it's gonna be about $12,000.
20:04No!
20:05We can't do that.
20:06The fiberglass guy wants to charge me three times what I put aside for it.
20:11And there's no friggin' way I can afford that.
20:13You can't just nail me like that.
20:14That's wrong.
20:31Earlier, we got in a really cool rocket slide.
20:33that we're trying to fix up.
20:35This thing is getting so far behind schedule.
20:38At this point, I don't think we're gonna pull this thing off at all.
20:46Hello, this is Nels.
20:47Hey, Nels, it's Rick Dale.
20:48How are you?
20:49How are you?
20:50Yeah, how are you doing?
20:51Pretty good.
20:52You know, I...
20:53I told you that I was gonna have this rocket slide done by the end of the day.
20:56Uh...
20:57Yeah.
20:58It doesn't look...
20:59It doesn't look like that's gonna happen.
21:00Uh...
21:01Okay.
21:02I...
21:03Yeah, um...
21:04We still got a ways to go on this thing.
21:06All right.
21:07If you could just give me a few more days, I think...
21:11In fact, I know we can get this thing totally put together.
21:14Uh...
21:18That should be okay.
21:19Hey, thank you very, very much for being understanding, Nels.
21:22All right, thanks for getting in touch.
21:23All right, thanks for getting in touch.
21:24I'll make this happen, okay?
21:25Okay.
21:26All right, bye.
21:27Bye now.
21:32Be careful with it!
21:33My entire business relies on my reputation.
21:36So if I fail to meet a deadline, it's really gonna hurt.
21:39And we still have some major hurdles to deal with on this rocket slide.
21:43So we're definitely not out of the woods yet.
21:45All right, first of all, this has to go in the hole.
21:48So we need something 40, 50, 60-foot long, which I don't know what we're gonna use.
21:53In order to start building on this slide, I need to get this very, very large pole in the ground.
21:58That's the first piece that I need to start with.
22:00So it has to go in the ground today.
22:02I don't know.
22:03What do you guys think about sticking that in there?
22:04Just lift it up with a forklift.
22:05If you lift up up there, this bottom's automatically gonna wanna come down.
22:09And then you just go like this.
22:10What's gonna hold this end?
22:11And as we're lifting...
22:12Hold what end?
22:13What's gonna do this?
22:14I see what you're saying, but we still have to get it up high enough to get it in here.
22:17Tether it up.
22:18I think all six of us are just gonna lift it up.
22:21There's no way.
22:22It's like 700 pounds.
22:23That's definitely not gonna work.
22:25Huh.
22:26Well, I'm almost out of ideas.
22:29I've been really worried about making this rocket slide happen since the first day I came into the shop.
22:34In hindsight, I should have said no to the whole project.
22:37But now there's no turning back.
22:39And I'm a man of my work.
22:42We're full of ideas.
22:43Not good ones.
22:44We gotta figure out how we're gonna get this 700-pound, 30-foot pole in the ground without breaking it or killing anybody.
22:52What happens if you cut the pole?
22:54Cut what pole?
22:55This?
22:56Down to here.
22:57I don't do that.
22:58What happens...
22:59Yeah, what happens if you notched here?
23:01Yes.
23:02I like that.
23:03Yes.
23:04And then it would have...
23:05Sit in there.
23:06It has no place to go.
23:07It should just go straight up and fall in the notch.
23:08This is gonna be sketchy.
23:09This is gonna be sketchy.
23:10This is gonna be sketchy.
23:12Ron came up with the only idea that's gonna make this deal work.
23:15We've already sank an eight-foot pipe into the ground, and that should hold the pole.
23:20Now we've gotta cut a notch into the pipe so that it has somewhere to sit when we lift the pole up in the air and slide it in.
23:27Whoop, whoop!
23:28Maybe this will keep it from sliding out of the pipe and guide it down into the hole.
23:32That better?
23:33That's it.
23:34You like a glove?
23:36I have a budget to deal with, and unfortunately, the budget wasn't there for a crane.
23:41So we had to do what we have to do.
23:43I'm hoping that the notch in the base is enough to hold this thing up as we're lifting it so that it doesn't come crashing down.
23:51He's gotta go forward and lift.
23:52Forward and lift.
23:53Whoa!
23:54Dave, you're moving.
23:55Damn it!
23:56I got a highway to one side, a business to the other, and a whole crew surrounding it.
24:01If this thing falls, I'm gonna be in deep .
24:04There's no way you're gonna be able to pull that that way fast enough to get in the hole before it wants to kill one of us.
24:10Shut up and listen to one guy.
24:13Tyler and Ron, all you're gonna do is guide it this way and this way.
24:17Nice and easy.
24:18One, two, three.
24:19Pull, pull, pull, boys!
24:22Pull!
24:23Pull!
24:24Pull!
24:25Pull!
24:26Don't get too close, Dave!
24:27I'm up against it right now.
24:28We gotta pull!
24:29Pull!
24:30Don't give up!
24:31Hey!
24:32Hey!
24:33Easy!
24:34Pull!
24:35Yes!
24:36Oh, that was scary.
24:37Who's heart's beating as hard as mine?
24:52Sure.
24:53.
24:58things are finally coming together on this rocket slide we got some of the galvanized parts back
25:07so we're gonna start fitting this behemoth back together one level at a time ready for the scenario
25:12well i'm looking through the the stuff that the customer sent me okay then it says attached to
25:17bottom platform wedges gotta be those right so i think we'll start here yeah okay we'll place
25:23all the way around all right you got holes right there okay come on dude let's dig it in
25:29put some hair around it get that bottom one all right let's just go ahead and get all these
25:39tightened up and those other threes in there okay okay and then when you get ready to get on top
25:44the steps all the way up the little stairway to heaven there call me back okay you got it all right
25:49all right this is not fun no it's not how are you i'm rick hi rick i'm tom tom good to meet you
26:07nice to meet you what's going on all right something to restore let's see what you got i can't wait
26:10there's so many problems that keep popping up on this rocket slide that are taking up all my time
26:16but i can't afford to turn away any new projects if i want my business to keep growing oh man that is
26:24cool i came to rick's restoration today to get my buddy el road roller restored oh god dang that is
26:32awesome i guess it's a rare old toy that um was only made between the late 20s and early 30s
26:38where'd you get that uh it's been in a family since the 30s wow when i was a young boy my father
26:44got it out of the garage and let me play with it man that's a steamroller yes it is it is buddy all
26:49right they made parts for tractors and equipment and stuff like that and then uh in 1921 they started
26:55making toys and stuff for kids okay and uh there was a son his nickname was buddy so they called it buddy
27:01l and that's how these toys came about as far as the name on these toys that's an incredible piece
27:06so does this have like some meaning to you my father passed away last october right and i'm trying to
27:11restore some of this old stuff so i saw this in the basement i go boy i'd really like to restore that
27:17and uh preserve it and pass it down to future generations right right that's awesome um there's
27:22a lot of parts on the thing i mean all the little itty bitty details that they did on this it was all
27:28working so that you would see how it turned you would see how you lit it up you would see the motor
27:33moving it probably was built just like the original one yes it is that's so cool so in order to get the
27:40restoration done on this exactly like it was like out of the box we'll have to take it apart figure
27:45out some of the parts that were broken then we'll uh strip it all out you know meaning take all this
27:49old paint off and everything smooth it out go ahead and put a paint job on it do the nickel plating on
27:54the motor as far as um getting that all done i'm looking around um 2200. okay um why so much well i mean
28:05we're probably gonna have 20 hours total in the whole piece when it's small like that it's almost
28:10just as hard as a big piece and um it's very it's very important to me to get it exactly right
28:15you know i want it done right and i want it done yeah so it looks brand new it will it'll look brand
28:21new i promise you i promise you so you uh you're good with that yes i am okay thank you thank you
28:27very much that is an awesome piece when rick first said 2200 i'm like nope but if that's what it takes
28:34to get it back restored your original hopefully be worth it hey jr how are you doing hi rick i needed
28:47to know a price quite a while back what's the price you got now uh it's gonna be about twelve thousand
28:51dollars no we can't do that oh it is what it is you can't just nail me like that that's wrong
28:58that's just wrong a little while ago we got in a giant rocket slide and nothing has gone smooth with
29:04this project we finally got the pole on the ground and now my fiberglass guy is updating me with the
29:10price and it don't look good right now you need to stop all right just stop don't do a god dang thing
29:17and i'll come over all right don't do nothing all right bye geez what happened the rocket slide
29:26happened the fiberglass guy wants to charge me three times what i put aside for it and there's no
29:32friggin way i can afford that it'll eat up the whole budget i've spent a lot of money and everything's
29:37basically done we're just waiting for the slide we're waiting for the slide well i mean so what are you
29:42going to do then i'd have a very hard time eating it and i'd have a very hard time telling him come
29:47pick the thing up so uh i probably i don't know my dad is clearly stressing about this rocket slide
29:56so i've got to take charge of the buddy up oh no you gotta be me or is there a piece of that gear
30:02all right that kind of sucks i've already missed one deadline on this project and now the fiberglass
30:07budget is gone through the roof you know it was like double double the price so everything else is
30:12finished and i was on budget with everything what does that mean if he doesn't budge on price
30:16we're gonna be screwed
30:26what's coming oh it's coming out
30:29there it is oh oh full bodywork my dad just left to go talk to the fiberglass guy about the budget
30:35he gave us on the rocket slide i've never seen him this stressed so if we're gonna keep on schedule
30:39with the buddy l toy we just got in i gotta take charge of this thing first bretley and i are taking
30:44it apart and this thing has tons of little parts so hopefully we're not missing anything
30:50there it is
30:58okay stop oh no there's the other piece of that gear yeah all these pieces you gotta be me when we tore the
31:05drivetrain apart two of the gears were totally shattered so we're gonna have to make these
31:09things from scratch all right that kind of sucks
31:17this rocket slide has been one major headache after another we missed our deadline i had a hell
31:23of a time getting a support pool into the ground and now the fiberglass guy wants to charge way more
31:31than what i budgeted situations like these are always hard to navigate so i'm gonna head over
31:35his place right now and see what we can do if this thing falls through everybody's gonna end up losing
31:41hey gr hey rick how you doing we need to talk rick about my shop today and discuss uh some issues
31:47with the budget and getting it in a reasonable price that we all three can work with you know it's
31:51like double double the price so everything else is finished and i was on budget with everything so
31:56how's the slide going i'm just about done with the uh ugly work and you remember how thin it was
32:01okay oh you already hit the back already yeah here was the major crack oh yeah yeah it's uh 28 pounds
32:08heavier now oh yeah that's yeah yeah that looks good this is probably the most critical of the
32:15i was surprised yeah oh yeah sure i was surprised how thin it was it didn't get a crack in half like it
32:20was gonna yeah before the slides in a lot better shape now so that was money well spent but we still
32:25got to figure out how we're going to scale back a bit so that we can stay in budget that looks
32:30awesome yeah i like the blue that's just sprayed that's not polished out or nothing now the next
32:34step is where all the work begins right if you wanted to if you want to make that polish shiny like
32:39side of a boat or something yeah yeah no i just like these are i mean this is perfect just leave
32:44it the way it is it's a lot of cheaper you're saving all that polishing labor don't polish it absolutely
32:48shoot the joke i agree with that i totally agree with that on every single thing here
32:51you're done instead of three more days worth of work there's at least three and you got that on
32:55everything yes yeah this is done the gel coating right now has a real good shine to it so the
33:00polishing is going to be unnecessary that should save me several days of labor and bring the cost down
33:06big time so now that the budget crisis is handled jr can finish out all the fiberglassing and get this
33:13project back on schedule the back side is done we'll do the top side repairs okay finish getting that white off
33:18shoot it all in white all right we're gonna get back on track perfect i hear you all right sounds
33:22good thank you all right we're gonna figure out how many t should be there draw it up and then we're
33:33gonna take it to water jet ted and then he's gonna cut us one out of metal sweet when bretley and i tore
33:38this toy apart all the gears and his driving mechanism were shattered dave and i are sketching out the exact
33:44measurements the best we can but if we're off by just a hair they won't work at all all right
33:49so we have half the gear so really if we just did the number of teeth times two that should be the
33:53gear you know i need a quarter of it really now we got to count the teeth huh just the quarter right
33:57so if you quarter it then yeah multiply it by four yeah 14 times four is four times four is 16.
34:05six carry the one one times four four five 56. there should be 56 teeth now start doing some long
34:16division all right man that's it load them up go see this water jet ted guy and come back with my
34:22parts i'll bring you back to pieces and you can put it back together awesome awesome
34:27hey ben good see you a little while back i had water jet ted create a steel emblem for a candy
34:39machine we were working on the water jet worked awesome so i'm hoping i can handle all the little
34:44teeth on these gears just the same that way these spin like clockwork did you get something drawn up
34:48i did um the only thing i was going to ask you about was the center to center on the gears what's
34:53your concern uh just we don't want to get them too close because you're limited on the space that
34:58you have on the insert yeah you can't get any closer than this okay otherwise you see where the
35:05teeth are interfering with each other they're actually touching yep and as this one rotates
35:09it has to have room to come out ah and if they're too close in you'll just be jammed yep right if the
35:14teeth are too close together the mechanism will lock up and we'll be screwed i really don't have any other
35:19option so we'll adjust it as best we can and just cross our fingers when we assemble this thing here we
35:24go
35:27oh god
35:33oh snap
35:38man ted that's awesome there we go that is just extremely badass the gears look awesome but i really
35:47hope they work thanks a lot you're welcome been a pleasure yep have fun cleaning up
36:02between the buddy l steamroller toy and the rocket slide we really got our hands full right now with
36:08this buddy l project dave is repairing the hardware mounts that hold the roof in place while bretly is
36:14sandblasting all the parts and phil is taking care of the body work so we can get this thing to paint
36:19that goes in get one of them i'll go over there
36:36see if we can get a wave out of them hey
36:39i'll be gentle with you i don't want to scratch you out kyle is putting all the buddy l steamroller
37:05pieces back together before the customer arrives
37:12does it have all the racks in it no somebody's here yeah
37:19hey how are you hi rick how's it going good here for the buddy l yeah good to see you i see you i'm
37:25here today to pick up my buddy l rotor that rick's restored for me this was in the family for many
37:30years it was pretty bad shape but i did bring it in i remember it as a kid riding on it and breaking
37:34it so i'm looking forward to see it restored to a new condition this was the family members right
37:39it was my dad's it was your dad's in the family too okay it had a lot of broken parts okay to open
37:43it up they're old and they're rare and they're very hard to find parts so you made parts yeah yeah
37:49yeah we had to make parts we had some struggles with this only a little toy i know i totally agree
37:53with you we had three guys working on that little toy all right all right all right you ready here we
37:58go one two three wow wow when i first saw the buddy out i was just shocked how well it was restored
38:09and when i used to play with it it was old and pretty beat up i had no idea what was going to look
38:14like when i got done i mean great job i'm very happy this it looks incredible i mean the colors the
38:21the stickers the repairs and i'm glad you figured out the right way it's supposed to go i mean it's
38:26just incredible do you just bring back memories then oh yeah in the backyard and on south main
38:31street out there in the dirt piles and playing with that yeah i don't think this would be going
38:35in the dirt piles no it's a pretty one so exactly tell me what you did what we did is we we tore it
38:41apart uh actually tyler and bretley tore it apart and they brought it back to me with a bunch of pieces
38:46so the gear itself was broke or missing it broke you know we hit the hundred pieces oh oh okay and
38:52then we took it to a guy named waterjet ted and he didn't leave it waterjet ted we got waterjet ted
38:57and artist ted yeah okay that's how we deciphered all right so he waterjetted all the teeth out for us
39:03so now we got aluminum gears on both sides yeah okay so everything works everything works wow this
39:09turns this way which turns this one which turns this excellent excellent it's pretty wild you know it's
39:16very sophisticated little toy when the wheel's spinning this this flywheel's spinning okay and
39:21it's running the pistons unbelievable look at that how did you get to reproduce the decals decals are
39:27all been done by hand i'm really amazed i mean if you look down at his decals he's nailed it all the way
39:32down every single letter inside that that's you know beautiful nice job yeah thank you very much
39:39tyler all your hard work awesome thank you thank you thank you i appreciate it it's just incredible what
39:44he did incredible when i get at home everybody in the family is going to want to play with it and
39:48they're not going to be able to in the room and can't play with it in the backyard it can be look don't
39:52touch keep your eyes closed the sheer size of this thing makes it the biggest challenge we've
40:00ever taken on and the true test of success is if this customer really likes it open your eyes turn
40:05around go wow once you guys quit playing around this thing isn't done yet this rocket slide has put
40:17everybody under stress and right now i can't believe we're finally into the home stretch
40:25yeah just park right here all right i got tyler up front holding off nels so that he doesn't get
40:30a glimpse of this thing before we can show it to him in all its glory hey tyler how you doing nels pretty
40:36good i hope rick took good care of my spacecraft yeah i've come down to rick's restoration today so
40:41see how he's done with my apollo era playground rocket slide i promise i'm not going to kidnap you
40:47all right this better be good when i first brought the item to rick it was in pieces and i wanted this to
40:53be exactly as it originally was made that come straight i'm a little worried to see if rick can come
41:00through on this we're gonna turn you around turn you around like this so now okay keep your eyes
41:04closed the sheer size of this thing makes it the biggest challenge we've ever taken on and the true
41:10test of success is if this customer really likes it now on three we'll turn you and open your eyes at
41:16the same time okay here we go you excited yeah let's do it one two three open your eyes turn around go wow
41:25wow that is just out of this world this is fantastic look at that absolutely beautiful when
41:33i first saw the rocket slide i was just taken aback by the colors the candy stripe the mirror finish
41:39on the slide the cone everything you just did a fantastic job there we go there he goes
