00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02What kind of yard sale do you go that you find a flippin' bull?
00:06I don't know if any number of safety precautions is gonna help Ron.
00:10Two, one.
00:11Oh, man!
00:12This thing's awesome.
00:14I came down to get my Pepsi Cooler restored.
00:16It's a 1940s Gullwing because of the Gullwing doors.
00:19That's one rare Pepsi Cooler.
00:22It's a 65 Ford.
00:23I've been wanting to restore a truck for myself for a while now.
00:26How do you think I'm gonna get my dad to be able to buy this for me?
00:28Hey, Dad.
00:29I know I'm gonna get this.
00:31Remember back in the day when things were made by hand and people took pride in their work?
00:37My name's Rick Dale, and I bring these things back to life.
00:42Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:45There's no owner's manual for what we do, but there's no job we can't handle.
01:04Ron just got a call from his buddy Bill about an item he has that he might want to get
01:08restored as a surprise for his dad.
01:11I can't wait to see what he's got.
01:13What's up, Bill?
01:14How you been?
01:14Rick, good to see you.
01:15You too.
01:15Ron?
01:15Nope.
01:16I invited Ron and Rick out here to take a look at a mechanical bull, see if it's worth restoring.
01:21That is a mechanical bull that we picked up at a yard sale.
01:24What kind of yard sale do you go if you find a flippin' bull?
01:27Ron, what the hell are you doing?
01:29I'm right!
01:31Woo!
01:32Yee-haw!
01:33Most people know about mechanical bulls from western-themed bars, but they were originally designed for rodeo training so that
01:40cowboys could learn to ride without getting trampled.
01:42So this is the buck position.
01:44This is going to come up in the air.
01:48We plug that thing in, you'd be on the floor.
01:53How much do you think you'd trust to restore it?
01:56You would have a new skin on there, and it would look more like a bull.
01:59All the motors would be redone, all new belts would be redone.
02:02Everything is going to be right around 25 miles.
02:06And I get to see him on it?
02:09You get to see him probably falling off of it.
02:11But I'll ride the hell out of this thing.
02:15I know my father's been wanting to get it restored.
02:17With him being in Idaho, it'll be a great time to get the mechanical bull done.
02:20And when he gets back, it'll be a nice surprise for him.
02:23I'll do it if you make this thing look badass.
02:25I'll make it.
02:26All right.
02:27You got it.
02:28Badass.
02:29Badass it is.
02:30I can't wait to see the bull restored, working, and bucking around off.
02:34Ready?
02:34One, two, three.
02:35Oh!
02:41Perfect.
02:56God, that's awesome.
02:59I've been wanting to restore a truck for myself for a while now.
03:02Brett Lee, I think I finally found the one.
03:06How's it going?
03:07Well, it's going good. I got breakfast.
03:10Is it warm?
03:10You look pretty jolly.
03:12I know. I am jolly. Look at this.
03:14It's a 65 Ford. It's like the same year as yours.
03:17After helping Brett Lee rescue his Chevy from the scrap heap,
03:20I figured it'd be cool to restore my own truck.
03:22How do you think I'm going to get my dad to be able to buy this for me?
03:24I don't think he's just going to buy me a truck.
03:26Dude, you're graduating high school.
03:28Tell him, get you a graduation present.
03:30Say, I don't want a laptop, Dad. I'm not going to be doing homework.
03:34I'm going to be driving my truck.
03:36All right? That's a good idea.
03:38All right. Shotgun.
03:39As soon as my dad gets back from wherever he is,
03:42I'm going to ask him if we can take a look at this beauty.
03:52Man, that's awesome.
03:54That's one rare Pepsi cooler.
03:57Hey, Rick.
03:58How are you doing, Wayne? How you been?
03:59Good.
04:00Good to see you, man. This thing's awesome.
04:02I came down to Rick's Restoration today to get my Pepsi Gold Wing cooler restored.
04:07Yeah.
04:08Okay, okay.
04:09I'm an owner of a fly fishing shop. Our store has a vintage theme. Rick's restored two Coke machines for
04:15us before.
04:16That Pepsi cooler is going to fit just perfectly where we want to put it.
04:19It's a 1940s Gold Wing because of the Gold Wing doors on a Mercedes.
04:24Oh, okay.
04:24So with it open and double doors, that's how it got its name.
04:28And this is stamped lettering. This isn't just a decal on here.
04:31Nowadays, you go to a place and you just see a square thing, but this stuff here, it's all steel.
04:36It just says a lot.
04:37I love working on anything Pepsi or Coke related. I mean, heck, it's my specialty.
04:42And this cooler is really neat and really rare.
04:46The upper body work is not too bad. It's basically the bottom.
04:50And I can see a rust line of five inches running all the way down the side.
04:53This has a piston-type compressor in it. It cools efficiently, but at the same time, you put it in
04:59a house that's got a wood or a tile floor.
05:01It's going to sound like you've got a V8 sitting in your room.
05:04Well, I want to keep it quiet and I want it to run efficient, so we're going to go ahead
05:09and replace that one.
05:10Okay, so we'll put an updated version of the compressor inside there. It'll run very efficiently.
05:15So, what do you want this thing to look like?
05:17You know, I want to make it really pop. I like some color with it.
05:21I'm not real sure if I'm real keen on the white, so maybe the Pepsi Blue would look great.
05:26Pepsi Blue, to me, is beautiful. And it does pop.
05:29The lettering on there ends up going to white instead of the red.
05:32So we'll tear it apart and pull the liner out.
05:34Once we get that out, the rest of the unit is going to end up going to sandblast.
05:38Ted will start in the artwork after I'm done painting it blue.
05:42Then the biggest thing is I'll have to build you a compressor.
05:44So with all that said and done, restoration on this is going to be $4,500.
05:51Ooh.
05:54Well, I tell you, I think the machine's very, very unique, and I like to get it done.
06:02Awesome.
06:03Thank you, Rick.
06:04Let's go in the office and we'll take some of them little green things you got in your wallet.
06:08Wayne's a regular customer, and I know he collects, so I really count on his business.
06:13We're going to have to make doubly sure we make this rare cooler really shine.
06:21Let's get the lids off.
06:24While I have Tyler and Bradley tearing down the Pepsi gullwing cooler,
06:28Kyle and Ron are going to figure out if we need a total overhaul on the motors for the mechanical
06:32bull.
06:33This thing's going to be awesome, dude.
06:34Looks like one of the motors makes the bull buck, and the other makes it turn.
06:38And the second motor needs a new belt.
06:40I want to try this motor first, because it's not hooked up to anything.
06:43Hit it.
06:44Holy f***.
06:47It's supposed to spin that fast?
06:49Dude, that's going to be kicking ass.
06:51Let's see, where's my other one?
06:54We got to hit this?
06:56Yep.
06:58Holy arse.
07:00Both motors are working.
07:01Now we need to put a belt on the motor that makes it spin, and we'll see how it goes.
07:05Let's see what it does.
07:06Ho, ho, ho.
07:18That's awesome, dude.
07:19Give me some.
07:21I've convinced my dad to look at this truck I really want to buy.
07:24I told you it was badass.
07:26There's so much work in this, and I know how impatient you are.
07:29I'm ready to drive this thing away right now.
07:32Hey, Rick!
07:33Came to Rick's Restoration to pick up my 1930s Gold Wing Pepsi machine.
07:37You ready to see this thing?
07:39I am.
07:39Here we go.
07:40One, two, three.
07:41Whoa!
07:54Dude, I never thought I'd be taking a picture of a fake bull's ass.
08:00This bull is on there pretty well.
08:03Brett Lee and I are taking the mechanical bull body off the bucking mech.
08:06It's fastened with a lot of bulls because they didn't want to get loose when a cowboy was riding it.
08:10But that makes it a real bear to remove.
08:13It's going to be heavy.
08:27Now that I've got the mechanical bull torn down, I've convinced my dad to look at this 65 Ford truck
08:32I really want to buy.
08:33I've just seen pictures so far, but I'm totally sold.
08:37See, I told you it was badass.
08:39I don't usually like leaving the shop when there's so much going on, but Tyler seems really interested in seeing
08:45this truck.
08:46Hey.
08:47I'm Rick.
08:47Rick.
08:48Eric.
08:48Good to meet you.
08:49My son called about your truck.
08:50Oh, okay.
08:51He said you got it for sale.
08:52Okay.
08:53He came here.
08:53He told me to come check it out.
08:55I'm selling this 1965 Ford F-100.
08:57It's a short bed, which is pretty rare.
09:00They're referred to as slick 60s.
09:02I'm selling it just because I had a couple other projects, and if I sell this, it'll help me expedite
09:06the other projects.
09:07I started in on it, and I wanted to get it sitting on the ground, so I bagged it.
09:10I four-linked it.
09:11So four-link.
09:12What's four-link?
09:13Four-link is the rear end.
09:15I can jump up here and take a look.
09:17They're link arms.
09:18Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:18Basically, it's an 18-inch Z-frame.
09:21And you do that to get it on the ground.
09:23Get it to lay all the way down.
09:25I've set this truck up to cruise across the pavement at about a half-inch clearance.
09:29That's what you're wanting to do?
09:30Yeah, that's so sick.
09:32It's like all forward to me.
09:33I would never have slammed something on the ground.
09:36It's all about how low you can get them.
09:37My dad doesn't seem that enthused so far.
09:40It may not be his kind of truck, and it is going to need a lot of work, but I'm
09:44ready to drive this thing away right now.
09:46Tyler, I see a ton of work, and you want $2,500 for this?
09:49With the amount of fab work that I've done to it, the four-link and the suspension and the bags,
09:54and, you know, to me, it's not that far off.
09:57It's all there.
09:57I don't know, Tyler.
09:58I mean, it's a lot of money.
09:59There's so much work in this.
10:01How'd that start out?
10:03Huh?
10:03I'm pretty sure it was this color, and it looked about the same.
10:06And how long did it sit in the yard?
10:07For how long was it not running engine?
10:09You end up having 13 years?
10:11But now it's done.
10:12I know how impatient you are.
10:13Well, let me sleep on and talk to him a little bit tonight, and I'll give you a call.
10:18All right.
10:19All right.
10:19Thank you very much for showing up here.
10:20No problem.
10:21Nice to meet you.
10:21Great meeting you.
10:22All right.
10:22Take care, guys.
10:23Thank you, sir.
10:24All right.
10:24Hope to hear from you.
10:25Yes.
10:26I think my dad should like the fact that I want to take on a project like his truck, and
10:29it's not going to take me 13 years to finish.
10:31Two or three at the most.
10:33Maybe four, but definitely not 13.
10:42Wow, this thing's pretty awesome.
10:44I just got back from checking out Tyler's dream truck.
10:48Now it's time to tear down the mech of the mechanical bull.
10:51There we go.
10:51It allows the operator to change the speed and direction of the bull's movement.
10:56It's like speed controls.
10:58It's supposed to throw your timing off because a bull doesn't buck the same way all the time.
11:02So what it's doing is it's showing three different speeds.
11:05The bottom one is slow, and the next one's a little faster, and the next one's fastest.
11:09And if you turn all three of them on, you'll full blast.
11:12Well, we need to get that thing taped off real good because, you know, when Bradley tears into it, we
11:16don't want to mess that up.
11:17We'll duct tape it really, really well.
11:19You know, it's got that plastic on it, so when he's blasting, it'll bounce off.
11:21Some of the moving parts are very delicate, so we have to protect them.
11:25The effort that we put into figuring out this mech is going to pay off big when we end up
11:29putting it back together.
11:30In the meantime, I've got to find somebody to reupholster the body with some real cowhide.
11:35When all's said and done, this thing is going to be badass, just like the customer asked for.
11:40Yo, cowboy!
11:42Cowboy!
11:50With the bodywork and primer finished on this 1940s Pepsi cooler, it's ready for me to paint.
11:56The piece was originally white with red lettering, but the customer wants to paint it Pepsi blue to make it
12:01stand out in the store.
12:02This thing is really going to pop.
12:12How's it coming, T?
12:14Good.
12:16Okay.
12:16You know, the reason why I had you do it really, really rough is because I want to use a
12:19new product.
12:20The base of the mechanical bull needs heavy-duty protection.
12:23So I'm going to have Tyler spray it with a product that's usually used to line truck beds.
12:28If somebody falls off this, it's not going to chip and nick the paint, you know?
12:31As soon as the spur or something goes down, the next thing you know, somebody's going to dig.
12:34Dang it.
12:35You're going to lightly coat everything.
12:36You stand back a little ways.
12:37You're going to have to give it a coat, and then you come back and give it another coat.
12:41I got it.
12:41My dad thinks he has to teach me everything, but I've got this covered.
12:44I've never used this stuff, and it does look pretty thick and gnarly, but paint's paint.
12:49Let's see how you do.
12:58Make sure you get good coverage.
13:02Thanks, Dad.
13:04I need to make more.
13:14Isn't this the Goldwing?
13:16Goldwing.
13:17The Goldwing.
13:18Because of the doors.
13:19All the pieces of the Pepsi Goldwing have been restored, rebuilt, and fabricated.
13:23Now all we've got to do is put it back together.
13:27Right there.
13:28I got this.
13:47Hey.
13:47Rick.
13:48Good to see you.
13:48Good to see you.
13:49What's going on?
13:49I came to Rick's restorations today to pick up my 1930s Goldwing Pepsi machine.
13:54It was just a mess, so I can't wait to see it.
13:58All right.
13:58You ready to see this thing?
13:59I am.
14:00You remember how it looked?
14:01I do.
14:02Okay.
14:03Here we go.
14:04One, two, three.
14:06Whoa!
14:09Is that the same machine?
14:11Yeah.
14:12Holy smokes!
14:13That is just gorgeous.
14:15Come over and check it out.
14:16Whoa.
14:16The look of this machine when I first had it revealed to me just popped.
14:21I could not believe the hand details on the decals, the pop opener, the catcher.
14:27It looks amazing.
14:29Rick, you've got to tell me, how did you transform this?
14:31What all did you have to do to get this looking like this?
14:35Well, the body was rusted out.
14:37It had some spots.
14:38Right.
14:38When I took the bottom off, it was really rusted, so we had to do quite a bit of body
14:41work.
14:41And then on the cap catcher, you know, you can see it's sort of designed to the contour
14:45of the cooler.
14:46So it's got a crease right through here.
14:47It's very important.
14:48This crease is here.
14:49And it's designed in a way to where it slides in and out.
14:52It didn't have anything there before.
14:54Yeah.
14:54Yeah.
14:54So this thing slides in and out.
14:55That's where you put your cap.
14:56And these bottles on here are all hand painted.
14:59Wow.
15:00Total.
15:00And then on the inside, it's come up like this.
15:03Okay.
15:03Just like a gull wing car in the era.
15:05Right.
15:05And then so this all here is all gets cold now.
15:08Everything in here.
15:09We went and put new seals on here.
15:11Polished all these hinges all up.
15:13These are the original hinges on here.
15:14They were all bent up.
15:15We straightened those out.
15:16And then we made you some shelves.
15:18And these are basically to store bottles on too.
15:21Nice.
15:21Rick just overdid himself on this thing.
15:23It just blew me away to see it.
15:25The detail work that he did in the hinges, the hand painted decals.
15:29Rick did an amazing job.
15:31It definitely just jumps out at you.
15:33So the big question is, how did we do on the budget?
15:37I'm a little concerned about that.
15:39Well, you know, as far as the budget is concerned, we made it.
15:44Oh, that's beautiful.
15:47That makes it even better.
15:49That's why.
15:50I thought we were going to go way over on this thing.
15:52That's just amazing.
15:53I cannot wait to get this home and just show all my friends, show my customers.
15:59It's going to look amazing in the shop.
16:01I really appreciate it, Rick.
16:03Thank you very much.
16:03It sounds like you're happy.
16:04And you being happy, that's making me happy.
16:07Thank you very much.
16:08You bet.
16:08Let's go ahead and go in the office, take care of the paperwork.
16:11Okay.
16:11And then I'll have somebody help us load that.
16:14Perfect.
16:17The mechanical bull's ready to buck, so we're taking it back to the ranch to surprise Bill's dad with it.
16:22Pop, do you want to ride it?
16:23Let's ride it.
16:24All right.
16:24Three, two, one.
16:27Oh!
16:28Oh, God!
16:30Tyler!
16:31Get over here!
16:33Why?
16:34It's important, Tyler!
16:35Get over here!
16:36Oh, my God!
16:37You're such a s**t!
16:49Sorry, Heineke.
16:50I'm stealing your hay.
16:51It's either that or we break Ron's neck.
16:55God, that's heavy.
16:56My dad has asked me to make a test dummy for this mechanical bull just in case Ron gets
17:00too scared and he doesn't want to ride it, so we can still show the customer that it really
17:04works.
17:10We're flapping in the wind.
17:11We're flapping.
17:12The mechanical bull's ready to buck.
17:14So we're taking it back to the ranch to surprise Bill's dad with it.
17:18And I'll be surprised if Ron actually goes through with riding it.
17:22You getting excited?
17:23We're excited.
17:25Keep them closed.
17:27Keep them closed.
17:27Not yet?
17:28Not yet?
17:29Rick and Ron came down today to return the mechanical bull they've been restoring for me.
17:33This is going to be a real surprise for my father.
17:35I'm really excited to see it myself, too.
17:37Ready?
17:38Uh-huh.
17:38One, two, three!
17:41Oh, man!
17:42What the hell?
17:43Oh, my goodness!
17:43What is that?
17:45That's a new bull, man!
17:46Yeah!
17:47Whoa!
17:48What do you think?
17:49That looks good!
17:49That looks good!
17:50Awesome, huh?
17:51Awesome!
17:52It was really impressive.
17:54I couldn't believe how good a job they did.
17:55Down to the last detail.
17:57This hide looks great.
17:59Right.
17:59From what it was earlier.
18:00This really gives it the look.
18:01Also, when you're riding it, this is really as slippery as a bull, too, you know, right?
18:05Because it's real.
18:05And then in back, we went through everything on the bottom.
18:08See, the motor's all been rebuilt.
18:10The belts.
18:12Right, everything's all new.
18:12This is basically sort of a fiberglass material.
18:15We stripped it all, and then we painted it with this real heavy industrial bed lining.
18:20So, what do you think, Bill?
18:21How do you like it?
18:22Rick, this thing looks brand new.
18:23It looks great.
18:24You did a great job.
18:26The only thing we've got left to do is plug it in.
18:27That's right.
18:28Pop, do you want to ride it?
18:29No.
18:30Come on!
18:30It's a good test.
18:32Mine's riding.
18:32Is that Ron right?
18:33Yeah.
18:34I get to control it, though.
18:35Ron and I go way back, and he's got me in trouble more times than I'd like to talk about.
18:39So, to get him on top of that bull, I really, I'm looking forward to that.
18:43Oh!
18:44Hey.
18:45No!
18:46Oh!
18:48All right.
18:49You ready?
18:50God!
18:51Son of a biscuit!
18:53Gotta have a cowboy hat.
18:54I don't know if I'm riding this thing.
18:55Hold on.
18:56Let me get this thing tightened up.
18:57You're gonna need more than tighten up.
18:59Here we go.
19:00This is payback.
19:01All right.
19:02Three, two, one!
19:05One!
19:05No, no, no.

19:08No, I can't do that.
19:10I just...
19:10I can't do that.
19:11I'm sorry.
19:12I owe you one or two.
19:14Yeah, that's probably why.
19:15I don't want to do it.
19:16I can't believe he jumped off that bull before I got the chance to turn it on.
19:20Chicken.
19:21That's all I can say is chicken.
19:23What?
19:23You gotta be kidding me!
19:25Tyler loves you so much, he knew that you were gonna chicken out, too.
19:29So, what he did is he made a stunt dummy double.
19:33Rondale.
19:34So, let's see how Ron the stunt dummy does.
19:36He he he.
19:38All right.
19:38Here we go.
19:39Three.
19:40Two.
19:42One.

20:10Are you ready now?
20:11I've just seen that.
20:13Hell no!
20:15That's why I got off that thing.
20:17Thanks, man.
20:18You bet.
20:19Thank you very much.
20:20All right.
20:20It was great.
20:21It was a lot of fun.
20:22Let me get you some money inside.
20:23All right.
20:24All right.
20:24Cool.
20:25Okay, guys.
20:27Hey, Dad, what do you think of the bowl?
20:28You think it came out good?
20:29I think it came out beautiful.
20:31Were you surprised?
20:32Yeah, surprised.
20:33Yeah.
20:34Yeah.
20:35Yeah.
20:42Tyler!
20:43What?
20:44Get over here!
20:45Why?
20:47It's important, Tyler.
20:49Get over here.
20:50Important.
20:52Oh, my God.
20:54You're such a .
20:55What do you think?
20:58I love you.
21:00No.
21:01My dad just came back from wherever he was and surprised me with this truck I've been wanting
21:05for, like, three or four weeks.
21:06I'm so excited.
21:07I can't even express it.
21:09All right.
21:11Oh, my God.
21:12Happy graduation.
21:13My first thought was shock, like shock and awe, because I didn't expect it at all, and
21:18it was such a complete surprise that I was so happy.
21:21Oh, I'm so excited.
21:23When I first saw Tyler's face and the joy and the happiness on him, that meant a lot.
21:29That was all worth it.
21:30Tyler's a restorer, and I'm sure he's going to be hitting me up for some help, but it's
21:34his.
21:35I wanted him to make it his own.
21:37My dad told me, you need to fix it in order to appreciate it.
21:40I'm teaching him the same thing, and it's actually working.
21:42Where's my frickin' hug?
21:44You love it?
21:48I love it.
21:49You want something to get some time?
21:50Yes.
21:51Bye-bye.
21:52Go, brat.
