00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02It's a Shoot the Bear by Seaburg.
00:04Awesome.
00:05Oh, my God.
00:06It's a wiring transistor nightmare.
00:09This is going to be a serious challenge.
00:11I got an old hand water pump that used to be my grandfathers.
00:14I'm thinking about getting this restored.
00:16The biggest challenge I'm going to have is the spigot.
00:18I really don't know what it did look like.
00:20What's the purple shirt all about?
00:21I like purple.
00:22Oh, you got to wear these shirts.
00:24Those are ugly.
00:25Cowboy, that is the shirt.
00:28If Rick thinks I'm going to roll over on this shirt thing,
00:30he's got another thing coming.
00:32No purple.
00:36Look at a man's workbench.
00:38You see his passions.
00:41His work's in progress.
00:45The things that drive him crazy.
00:49Projects that?
00:51You get the point.
00:52Anyway, every workbench tells a story.
00:55And this is ours.
00:57American Restoration.
01:06What's in the big box?
01:07The big yellow box.
01:09This morning, I got into the shop at my usual time.
01:11And the first thing I see is this bright, huge yellow box
01:15that must have got delivered with the late deliveries.
01:18Kelly didn't know anything about it,
01:19so we decided to open it right away.
01:21It says from Fun Spot.
01:23Is that the guy that we did the little boat?
01:24Yes, sir.
01:25The little seascape?
01:26I wonder what he sent us this time.
01:31Awesome.
01:32What's the letter say?
01:33Dear Rick, this is a 1947 Shoot the Bear game.
01:36I'd like to restore this game both cosmetically and mechanically
01:39and use it in our arcade.
01:42Seberg was a monster.
01:44They were big.
01:44They made so much money in jukeboxes and games like this.
01:48It was a huge company.
01:50What this thing used to do, you know, you put your coin in here,
01:53you'd press the knob, and then you'd actually shoot at the bear.
01:55OK?
01:56And this thing shot a beam of light.
01:57So when it hit that, it probably spins,
02:00and he sends it this way, it goes back and forth.
02:01That's how it scores.
02:03You know, the cool thing about this game
02:04is that it actually gave you that feel of you in the woods.
02:08You got your gun, you're in the woods,
02:10here's the bear running across the woods,
02:11and you're shooting at the bear.
02:13It's pretty cool.
02:14What do you think this is going to cost to restore?
02:17This whole project is gigantic.
02:19There's a bunch of cosmetic.
02:21There's wood, there's Formica, there's all the artwork,
02:24which is like three panels.
02:25All this, this is actually cardboard.
02:27Ted will trace all that out,
02:28and then we'll go ahead and redo this all new again.
02:31The mechanical on the inside, the gears,
02:33is like another restoration all in itself.
02:35The deal is that sometimes you look at stuff like this,
02:38and you got the door shut, you look at this,
02:39that'll look like too hard, right?
02:41Right.
02:41Oh, my God.
02:45Oh, my God, we got to call Tim.
02:48Everything runs through here.
02:51It's a wiring, transistor, capacitor nightmare.
02:55This is going to be a serious challenge.
02:57It's a ton of electric and switches to fix
02:59in order for this thing to work again.
03:01So I'm going to ask my arcade expert, Tim,
03:03to come down and hopefully help us with it.
03:06This thing to bring it back to life is about 12 grand.
03:09I don't see any way around any way cheaper.
03:11And I'm hoping that we can make it work.
03:15Even if Tim can help us out with this, we're still going to have our hands full.
03:18I'll get some help out here and we'll start putting that stuff back away.
03:22Good morning, Kyle.
03:28Good morning, Kyle.
03:30Good morning, Rick.
03:31How's it going?
03:32I'm trying to finish up this Pepsi.
03:33What are you doing?
03:34Working.
03:35What's the purple shirt all about?
03:37I like purple.
03:38No, you got to wear these shirts.
03:40Those are ugly.
03:41That's their shirt.
03:42That's what we wear.
03:43They're uniforms, you know?
03:44Last month, Kyle won employee of the month because Rick said he was a team leader.
03:48Everybody give it up for Kyle because he is the employee of the month.
03:51All right?
03:52He wants to see some leadership.
03:53Nobody likes these ugly-ass gray shirts, but nobody has the balls to say anything but
03:58me.
03:59This is team leader shirts.
04:01Cowboy, that is the shirt.
04:03My uniform is purple.
04:05If Rick thinks I'm going to roll over on this shirt thing, he's got another thing coming.
04:10I'm going to make it my mission to change these ugly-ass gray shirts.
04:14Told you he's going to get pissed.
04:15He's been getting pissed at me for 18 years.
04:17Whoa, look at that thing, that's clean.
04:28Dang.
04:29How are you doing?
04:30Good.
04:31I'm Matt.
04:32Hey, Matt.
04:33I'm Rick.
04:34Good to meet you, Rick.
04:35Awesome.
04:36Right.
04:37Thank you very much.
04:38I got some inside to show you.
04:39Oh, you do?
04:40Yeah.
04:41Let's see what you got.
04:42I got an old hand water pump.
04:43Wow.
04:44I got this old water pump for my grandfather.
04:45He bought it from the scrap recycling place that he used to work at.
04:47Since he passed away many years ago, all of us grandkids got some of these old scrap
04:51pieces of steel.
04:52Oh, man.
04:53She'd be busted.
04:54Yeah.
04:55My grandfather used to bring all this kind of stuff home and use it for yard art.
04:58Oh, man.
05:00The manufacturers masked food.
05:02They were a big, big company.
05:03This thing was basically the first deep well pump, and it was really, really fast at pumping
05:07the water out.
05:08We take for granted now.
05:09You come into your house, and you go to the faucet, and you turn the faucet on, and you
05:13get water.
05:14You get pressure, too.
05:15Sure.
05:16I'm thinking about getting this restored in memory of my grandfather.
05:18You know, I don't have many items from him, and I think I'd just like it to look really
05:22nice and think of him every time I look at it.
05:25I don't even know what color it used to be, so, you know, I'm thinking red.
05:28I like red.
05:29It matches my car.
05:30You like red.
05:31I like red.
05:32You like red.
05:33Okay.
05:34You know, it doesn't need to work.
05:35I'm not going to be pumping water, but I'd sure like to make a display piece out of it.
05:37Okay.
05:38The biggest challenge I'm going to have, you know, if I do do this, is the spigot.
05:41I've either got to find one.
05:42Right.
05:43Or make one, and then if I have to make one, I have to research and find out what it did
05:47look like.
05:48Okay.
05:49All right.
05:50Here's the big question.
05:51What do you think it'll cost to get this restored?
05:53Well, sandblast it all down, prime it all out, and paint it.
05:57The spigot is the only thing I really don't know.
06:01This thing here could cost you $50, could cost you $300.
06:04So I'm looking at probably $900 to do the whole thing.
06:07Okay.
06:08Well, Rick, I think my grandfather would be very proud of me for getting this done for
06:11him, and I know that I'd certainly like to look at it every day and think of him when
06:15it's completed, so I'm very happy with that price.
06:17Okay.
06:18Let's go inside.
06:20I'll have Kelly do the paperwork with you.
06:21Okay.
06:22You said to be a team player, so I got Rick's Restoration on there, and go team on the back.
06:28We can't wear purple.
06:29No, no, no.
06:30Well, that sucks, sucks, sucks.
06:33When you shipped this thing to me, it looked like it was in storage for 20 years.
06:36You ready?
06:37I'm ready.
06:38All right.
06:39Let's go.
06:40Let's go.
06:41Two, three.
06:42Wow.
06:43Wow.
06:44It's perfect.
06:48All right, Tim.
06:49Got something else for you to look at.
06:50Oh, boy.
06:51Shoot the bear?
06:52Seberg, shoot the bear.
06:53Tim came out here today to help give a quote on the mechanics of the shoot the bear item
06:54that we're gonna restore.
06:55Here's one problem here.
06:56That's a rubber belt.
06:57That's a rubber belt.
06:58Used to be a rubber belt.
06:59Now it's a hunk of dust.
07:00I'm the director of the Pinball Hall of Fame here in Las Vegas.
07:03I'm pretty good at fixing pinball machines.
07:04I've done it for a while.
07:05There's a motor under there that spins at a couple thousand RPMs.
07:09In order to get this bear to run back and forth, they had a transmission that consists of cog
07:16wheels and belts to slow it down enough.
07:20And then what's supposed to happen is this thing here is supposed to move along like that.
07:25There's actually current going through these two strips of copper here that's then transmitted
07:27to the bear.
07:28This is an actual amplifier.
07:29And if you'll look at it, you'll look at it.
07:30You'll look at it.
07:31You'll look at it.
07:32You'll look at it.
07:33You'll look at it.
07:34You'll look at it.
07:35You'll look at it.
07:36You'll look at it.
07:37You'll look at it.
07:38You'll look at it.
07:39And you'll look at it.
07:40You'll look at it.
07:41And then you'll look at it.
07:42You'll look at it.
07:43You'll look at it.
07:44So, this is the wire here.
07:45It's supposed to move along like that.
07:47There's actually current going through these two strips of copper here that's then transmitted
07:49to the bear.
07:50This is an actual amplifier.
07:51And if you'll look here, there's considerable rust here, which means this machine at some
07:55point has been wet.
07:56And if there's one thing old electronics don't like, it's being wet.
07:59This is the original cordage here.
08:01All of this is going to have to be replaced.
08:03Yeah, this is going to be a colossal job.
08:06so i guess the magic question is can you do it i can do it gonna be expensive though i think i
08:13can get this done for about 2500 to 3000. okay well when rick and kelly open this up i know they
08:22they figured that you could do it so i'm gonna figure that they can pay for it i think you say
08:28we got a deal we got a deal well cool together i think we can get this done very nice everything
08:34in this whole game is going to have to be taken apart it's just a massive quantity of hours it's
08:39going to be a big job no doubt recently a customer dropped off a really old water pump that he
08:48inherited from his grandfather kyle and fonzie are tearing it down and getting it prepped for
08:52sandblasting dave is in the process of making a base for the pump to be mounted on he's fabricating the
08:58base out of a piece of steel while they handle that i got johnny coming in to give me a little bit more
09:03information on an item that recently came in somebody shipped me in something it's a toy and
09:08uh it's another one of those i don't know if i should restore it is it worth anything what do i
09:12do i really don't know so i brought you in a look at it's over here though i'm johnny owner of toy shack
09:16we specialize in vintage toys and hot wheels rick calls me down from time to time when he has a
09:20question about a specific toy whether he wants to put a value on the piece or he wants some questions
09:25whether to restore it or not oh wow that's cool that's like old wolverine tin toy lithograph tin that's
09:32cool drum manger that's neat look like elements got to it a little bit but i mean overall i mean
09:37it looks in pretty good shape i don't know how old it is and i don't even know it's worth restoring
09:41so that's why i brought you in i'm sort of curious i believe this one to be from probably from the 30s
09:45oh so it's pre-war like yeah this is an earlier piece before world war one most of our pieces came
09:50from europe wolverine was out of pennsylvania oh most of your your lithograph tin are about half this size
09:57oh really most of the little toys you would crank up more than likely the toy being 80 years old
10:01it's been handed down from generation to generation and that would explain you know the
10:06where and also that some of the elements have gotten to this toy as well all right let me turn this
10:11thing on yeah it's it's it's trying but it's not there i mean when this thing came out more than
10:17likely this is that's the sound you would have heard this thing would have just been kind of
10:22banging on that drum but uh still amazing that it's it it still functions after 80 years so is it worth
10:29restoring yeah i mean definitely i mean you got all the parts and pieces you need you don't need
10:34it uh except i mean you probably put like a new spring or something on the inside yeah what is that
10:39thing worth like if you were to have that what is it worth you know just as it sits i mean i would
10:43put this piece maybe two to three hundred just the way it sits right you know if you got it restored
10:49uh you could easily uh somebody to decorate the house or somebody to put in the office maybe five
10:54six hundred i would say something like that okay go all right thanks take care buddy i'll walk you
10:59up everything on this toy would have to be restored by hand there's a lot of intricate artwork and
11:05mechanics going on so it might cost more to restore it than it's worth
11:13cowboy i mean really now you got purple bandana purple shirt what's the purple i told you
11:19a player so i got rick's restorations on there and go team on the back
11:26cowboy's been wearing purple shirts every day i've been working with them for 18 years and i've
11:30never seen him stuck on something so dumb before i don't know what he's up to but i don't like it
11:36you got the right idea you just got the wrong color we can't wear purple okay what the hell are
11:41you wearing i'm the captain i'm wearing a captain shirt it's it's it's my business okay says rick's
11:47restoration this is what i decided on this is what it needs to be i don't know what the deal
11:50is with his policy on wearing these ugly ass gray shirts i don't know where he got this crap from
11:55his grandma we might as well have some flowers and rainbows on her why can't this be the color of
12:01our shirts no no no that sucks sucks sucks
12:08a customer shipped us a vintage shoot the bear arcade game and it's an enormous job robert is
12:21sanding down and refinishing all the woodwork while tim over at the pinball museum is going through all
12:27the mechanics in the game if we actually pull this whole thing off it might be a minor miracle
12:38hey rick hey man how you been good good to see you good to see you yeah so you excited to see
12:42this pump i am ready i've been ready for now a month all right okay it's right over here it's
12:47right okay check it out i came down to rick's restoration today to pick up my grandfather's
12:51water pump it's right here all right covered up ready to go all right all right you remember how
12:56rusty this gnarly thing was oh my god it was horrible the pump i brought down was completely
13:00rusted out i've been sitting outside for probably 40 years and it was just in horrible horrible shape
13:05and i'm just very excited to see it so you're ready i'm ready here we go one two three oh my god
13:13what do you think holy moly that is unbelievable when rick pulled the sheet off the pompey i couldn't
13:19believe it the red color on it was absolutely perfect it was completely smooth there was no
13:23more pitting on it i mean it truly looked brand new what do you think check it out wow this is all
13:28new oh my god yeah yeah pin striping is perfect yeah oh my gosh this is unbelievable i just can't
13:34believe how smooth it is right compared to how pitted it was before so it's truly unbelievable
13:39well it's an art to get this this smooth oh i bet i want to say this was almost a day and a half
13:44of nothing but body work we use this special filler so that's what enabled us to get all this smooth
13:50you remember didn't have a base on it out of the base made that base so it's you know it's nice and
13:53sturdy we ended up getting it powder coated and then we pinstriped over top of everything you really see
13:58everything before this stuff this writing was sort of blended in with the rust and the colors and everything
14:02right came out real real nice oh it's gorgeous i love the pinstriping if you remember there was
14:07no spigot so we looked all over to try to find one this is pretty rare we could not find another one
14:12at all we we did see pictures of different models and stuff and how they ran so what we did was we
14:17went and just took and bent a piece of pipe and then we powder coated the whole piece this is tapped
14:21inside here okay and it's all tightened in there i think uh rick my grandfather would be totally shocked
14:27i mean they were just for him it was just scrap metal that he got from his work right and he just put
14:31in the backyard in the backyard and probably never occurred to him that something would look this
14:35nice right certainly didn't occur to me it would look this nice so uh yeah i think he'd be very
14:39proud and i know i am thank you so much thank you thanks for bringing in let's go and do the paperwork
14:44and i'll help you load it very good for just a piece of junk he brought home it is amazing how it
14:47turned out i'm sure he's looking down and thinking wow to ensure the long life of any restoration paint job
14:55you must prepare the surface correctly when prepping to repaint your old metal project
15:00what is the best method to use a remove old paint and rust b sand the surface smooth c apply a base coat
15:10of primer d all of the above the answer and more coming up
15:14when prepping to repaint your old metal project what is the best method to use the answer is d all
15:27the above when preparing to paint over your old metal project it's important to remove all the surface
15:33rust then you're going to sand it with rough grit to fine grit sandpaper to smooth the surface next apply
15:39a primer that's made for metal surfaces and that'll help your paint stick finally once the primer's dry
15:45you're ready to light sand it and add the paint and don't be afraid to add a few more coats of primer
15:51sanding in between each one of them
16:00morning rick what the hell is going on cowboy's been trying to get me to replace the t-shirts
16:07that are uniform at the shop with some crappy homemade purple shirt and now ron is wearing one
16:13too what is this what are you doing what's wrong you look good but you can't wear them to work i made
16:18a special one for you cut the sleeves off for you look it even looks better than ours now that i got
16:24another guy wearing purple i smell change in the air all because of cowboy who's the team leader now rick
16:31i really like my colors i love the gray and the reds i don't quite like the purple just try it
16:38look at it promise i love my brother but his sense of style is like the same thing every day
16:44why not change it up bro get yourself some color get some purple in your life make a change
16:49this is tim uh he helped me work on the uh shoot the bear good to see you so you excited to see
17:12it i am i'm dying to see it yeah am i gonna see it today yeah we'll get you wonderful you ready
17:18i'm ready all right let's go it's right over here okay come on here i came to rick's restoration
17:23today to pick up my restored shoot the bear arcade game which was manufactured in 1949.
17:30i'm excited to see the game operating again as it did for 25 years when i operated it all right
17:37so when you shipped this thing to me it looked like it was in storage for 20 years i know how it
17:41looks okay you remember you remember here we go one two three wow wow wow it's perfect brand new
17:55it is beautiful rick the bear and everything looks great it's just wonderful what you did with this
18:01machine when rick showed me that shoot the bear i just couldn't believe how good that looked i was
18:08amazed now tell me rick uh what did you do to it it was a huge team effort we ended up taking it all
18:15the way apart removing all these panels on the inside and that's where ted did all his artwork he
18:20reincarnated all this art and it actually goes all the way back like two more levels we went and took
18:25and put a paint job on here this was a candy color believe it or not so we went and this is like three
18:30different types of spray paint to give it this look and then ted went and found some kind of material
18:35that matched that wood grain that was on here it was basically just wallpaper back in the day but
18:40he found this exact same stuff and we ended up putting it on the front of that um of course we got
18:45to shoot the bear up in the top this all lights up in here and then this lights up down here this is
18:50actually the box this is the brain box held the gun got the money you know that was the main thing right
18:55and uh redid the gun did the stock and everything made it all new again then tim did the inside of it
19:01there was an incandescent bulb in here with a filament that broke every time somebody would
19:06slam the gun down so we took all that out of there and replaced it with an led bulb that's four times
19:11brighter doesn't have a filament can't be broken and will probably last years and years and years oh
19:18that's so important because people used to slam that down there frequently okay and then on the inside
19:24when kelly and i opened this thing up it was just a wiring nightmare so tim came in here and
19:30sort of redesigned all the working it's it's mechanically i think now better than it was
19:35originally because what i replaced it with a new motor a new circuit board which is reprogrammable
19:42new wire i think this game will be working 50 years from now right well i hope it is because fun
19:47spot will be operating 50 years from now can we see if it works yeah yeah yeah i'm just amazed that
19:54i'm going to be able to see people playing it they're going to come in in droves it's going to be wonderful
20:00oh this is great yeah you like i haven't shot this for you know how many years 25 years at least
20:14this is wonderful thank you both for uh doing this beautiful job it's going to be a good game it's going
20:21to keep playing right it's going to last so thank you very much for bringing it in thank you thank you for
20:26doing the job you bet thank you thank you too same here my pleasure repeat business is always good
20:32let's go inside i know kelly wants to see you okay come on in
20:45come on out here guys got a meeting ron come on over here i got a little meeting there's been some
20:50complaints and rebellion about our work shirts so i called a meeting so we can get this problem nipped
20:55in the bud here's the deal i know not everybody is so happy with the shirts we're wearing cowboy
21:00actually pointed out that not everyone loves these shirts and they're looking kind of tired so we're
