00:04tonight on monster quest the chilling encounters of witnesses who say they were trapped
00:11i was terrified that whatever was in that corn was going to get me
00:17stalked this thing's going to come through the door and it's going to maul us and hunted down
00:22by strange creatures i was just immersed in its eyes like the mouse staring down a snake
00:34for many centuries people have reported strange and sometimes terrifying encounters
00:39with what they describe as monsters its eyes just lit up in the moon and we're like
00:46that is nothing i've ever seen if i try to run i'd be dead now for the first time some

00:55their experiences is there a pattern to their encounters it was just terrifying and if so
01:05what could it mean
01:14suburban ohio is a patchwork of farmlands two-lane highways and quaint small towns
01:22but within this bucolic region there have been numerous alleged sightings of a dark
01:28predatory creature known to locals as the dogman the first reported encounter originated in the
01:37small ohio town of defiance on july 25th 1972 two workers are out working on the railroad tracks in
01:46the early morning and one of the workers a man named ted davis gets hit in the back of the
01:51head
01:51with a two by four the worker was clearly injured but it's what he said that ambushed him that really
01:59caught everyone's attention in his police report he said that this predator looked like a wolf-like
02:04beast walking on two legs that same year the defiance police department receives two more reports of
02:11sightings in one of them a grocery store worker reports seeing a dog-like creature that's very large
02:18run right in front of his car after the third report the department opens an official investigation
02:25the chief donald breckler is quoted saying we're taking it seriously we're concerned about the safety
02:31of our people across the state of ohio more than 35 towns and counties have reported sightings
02:38they report an aggressive creature targeting livestock animals even humans
02:45judge shane luthold believes the dogman hunted him down on a remote country road in the small town
02:53of busiris ohio i was a trial lawyer for 17 years in my hometown and then i eventually became judge
03:02that's what i've been doing for almost 11 years now i deal with evidence and and what is evidence
03:09i know what i saw no one will ever convince me that i didn't see what i saw
03:18it was 1985 i'd have been 15. i was a young high school athlete i ran cross-country and track
03:30i was training for the bratwurst festival 10k
03:35now i'm i was born a country boy played hide and go seek in barnes at night i wasn't scared
03:41of the dark
03:46i'd always start off the first half mile pretty slow and as i got more loose i'd pick up speed
03:52and i get the first two and a half miles in it was a hundred percent uneventful
04:00i turn around and i'm coming back and there's something the best way i can describe it is
04:06i got this kind of goosebumps up the back of my neck and i just had this really eerie feeling
04:14that something was staring at me
04:16i physically stopped i'm thinking there's something in there like something is watching
04:29me and it was it was weird and as i was looking i noticed something in the cornfield
04:37was like making a circular motion in the corn whatever was making this corn move was big
04:46and so i'm watching this thinking well that has to be a deer or multiple deer and then all of
04:55a
04:55sudden it stopped and and now i feel a little creeped out
05:02there are no bears in northwest ohio there are no wolves so my first instinct is i need to get
05:12out
05:12of here so i decide you know what i'm just going to take off running and that's when it all
05:17began
05:21but the moment he decides to run whatever's in the corn does the same it takes off running with
05:28me pacing me perfectly as i'm running now that's not deer behavior whatsoever deer run away from
05:38you they don't follow you they don't pace you and i can see the rows moving but it's not in
05:46the first
05:46row of corn it's two or three rows deep so i can't see it so i stop and when i
05:56stop it stops
05:57perfectly like it stops perfectly it doesn't run in front of me it doesn't stop behind me
06:03it stops exactly where i am and that's when i start to get really scared
06:14i take off as fast as i can run as fast as i can run like i'm jesse owens at
06:21the olympics
06:24anybody that's ever ran in a cornfield the rows are tight it is really difficult
06:32the sheer amount of corn that was moving
06:38i knew it was big had this massive adrenaline dump and then you just kind of burn it out
06:45and so i had to stop and when i stopped it stopped
06:52this thing it was toying with me
06:57i was being stalked i was terrified that whatever was in that corn was going to get me
07:08i'm starting to hyperventilate
07:13i'm thinking okay let's try this again but not as fast
07:20i've got a half mile and i know the corn's going to end
07:25my house is to the right
07:28i was going to intersect with it i was going to run right into it
07:32and i remembered that a good friend of mine lived to the left
07:36i'm going to go left and go to my friend's house
07:40but i knew that whatever that was in the corn was going to come out of the corn
07:47i'm getting closer i'm getting closer hearts just boom boom boom boom boom boom boom boom
07:54as i got to the end of the corn i turned and that's when i saw it
08:05this thing walked out of the corn and it was about six foot tall
08:10it had the head of a dog looked like a german shepherd's head
08:14high pointed ears and i noticed that it had these long arms
08:20that hung down past its knees its shoulders were rolled forward like this
08:27and it turned i remember like locking in on it
08:34i knew when i saw it that this was absolutely a predator
08:39and if it wanted to kill me it absolutely could kill me
08:45it was just terrifying
08:49this primal feeling of you have to run you have to run
08:56i didn't believe there was a person alive
08:58that could have ran faster than me
09:03it was a flailing like screaming type thing
09:09i thought for sure it was catching me it's behind me it's going to catch me
09:13i was running for my life literally running for my life
09:18it was after eight o'clock it was getting dark i get to my buddy's house and they had an
09:24in-ground pool and i just dove head first into the pool
09:28i thought i could distance myself from it
09:31i was sitting on the bottom with my nose plugged
09:34and i'm looking back and forth i kept thinking any second i'm going to see it sitting on the side
09:41of the pool just waiting for me to surface and it's going to reach out with those long arms and
09:45grab me
09:48what was going through my mind hold your breath
09:50my lungs were like burning for air
09:55i finally come up
09:57and when i came up
09:59i'm doing one of these things you know looking around looking around looking around i don't see it
10:05when i jumped out of the pool it was a mad dash
10:09not until i ripped that door open got in latched it
10:14that's when i finally felt safe
10:18i guess i never really thought it was going to be locked it was the 80s in the country nobody
10:22broke into your house
10:25i remember crawling on all fours
10:29crawling on all fours and and and pulling curtains and putting my eye up looking to see if it was
10:36out there
10:38i ended up spending the night at his house because
10:42there was no way i was going back outside
10:44i don't care if my parents pulled in in the car
10:47i wasn't walking outside those doors at night
10:49wasn't happening so i ended up staying the night there
10:52the terror of that night never fades
10:56and neither does shane's search for answers
10:59do i think there's a preponderance of the evidence that it's real absolutely

11:33that year another reported encounter surfaces farther downstate in green county involving a young woman named diane bentley
11:44it was wintertime 1972
11:49i was out with my boyfriend at the time and another couple we drove out on a little road that
11:57we knew the bridge was out on
11:59perfect place if you're out on a date and you want to mess around with your boyfriend or girlfriend or
12:06whatever
12:08we were just standing beside our car
12:11no clue what we were talking about you know we're teenagers not talking about anything really
12:19and that's when i don't know it's just really strange like the hair on the back of my neck was
12:26standing up for no reason you know
12:30just looking around and trying to figure out what was wrong
12:44part of my brain was able to pick up that there's something out there
12:52i look into the bushes and trees
12:56and i see
12:58two eyes
13:00i'd say a good
13:01five and a half six feet into the bushes
13:06i'm
13:06standing there staring at it and
13:09of course my mind can't think of
13:11you know you can't comprehend of things that you've never
13:15seen or heard of before
13:18they were not raccoon eyes they were not possum eyes
13:23these are a more uh almond shaped
13:26and then i heard
13:29the uh
13:30bushes rustling
13:32just
13:33slowly rustling
13:37i see a silhouette
13:42it was
13:44a large animal
13:45and it was
13:47upright
13:47whatever it was
13:51and i start hearing up
13:53the sound of the
13:55pebbles
13:56that were being shuffled
13:59as the animal came closer to me
14:01everybody else thought
14:03they were
14:04smart enough
14:06to run and start jumping in the car
14:09i'm mesmerized
14:11i see this
14:14large something
14:15that should not exist
14:16it should not exist
14:18not at all
14:25i could not break eye contact
14:28i i was just immersed in its eyes
14:32part of my brain
14:33kicked in
14:34and said don't move
14:35don't move
14:38i actually felt
14:40kind of like the mouse
14:42staring down a snake
14:44i was singled out
14:48someone said
14:49get in the car
14:51get in the car
14:54i realized
14:55i'm the fool that's still standing out here
14:58i'm the teenager that gets killed in the grade b movie
15:04i finally
15:06was able to break
15:07its concentration on me
15:09my concentration on it
15:12so
15:12i run around
15:14i look to my left
15:16it was
15:17very very close
15:18probably within a few feet of me
15:21i jump in
15:22i could feel it
15:25it is
15:26right there
15:29looking at me like this
15:31its paws
15:33were literally
15:34on the
15:34window well
15:37its mouth was open
15:39it wasn't growling
15:40i saw the teeth
15:42it had
15:43rather close
15:44cropped fur
15:48and i'm thinking
15:50is it going to break
15:52the window
16:07halfway home
16:09i remember getting cold chills
16:11i think it's a survival thing
16:14i think our little teenage brains
16:18were just totally fried at that point
16:20we didn't know
16:21what to say or do
16:23and i was pretty
16:24freaked out
16:27diane's reality was shattered by the dogman
16:31a creature she never believed could exist
16:34until it stood before her
16:36and her experience
16:37isn't unique
16:39across america
16:41people have reported encounters with other beings they can't explain
16:45including one of the most enduring figures in north american lore
16:50bigfoot
16:52long before europeans set foot in north america
16:56the indigenous peoples of the pacific northwest told stories of a towering elusive being
17:02not a monster
17:04but a guardian of the wilderness
17:06the quinault tribe of washington called them forest people
17:10on the other hand the coast salish people call him by a different name
17:16saskets which means wild man or it can also mean hairy man
17:20the tribes don't see the creature as an aggressive predator instead they see it as a protector of the land
17:26dangerous to humans only when provoked or when sacred sites are disturbed
17:30but those tribal beliefs would be challenged in 1924
17:35when four unsuspecting men in washington state claim they are attacked by what they describe as a group of bigfoot
17:44-like creatures
17:46it all began with a group of four miners looking for a chance to strike gold
17:50the men have access to a mine that sits two miles east of mount saint helens
17:55one of the miners fred beck would later publish a detailed account of the events in a book
18:03the men mine for weeks and weeks and don't find any gold
18:08and then they say that one night they're awakened by something very strange
18:15there are these whistling sounds on the ridges just above them
18:19it's as if one creature is standing on one ridge whistling to another that is answering back
18:27although the noises are strange it doesn't change their mission
18:30so night after night they ignore these unusual sounds and continue mining during the day
18:37about a week after they first hear the noises one of the miners hank asks another guy fred if
18:43he will go get water that's about a hundred yards from the cabin
18:47it is still light outside and fred is leaned over trying to collect water and suddenly he hears hank
18:55screaming fred immediately looks up and sees that hank is standing there with his rifle aimed at
19:01something in the tree line he follows the rifle's direction and is shocked
19:11mount saint helens washington state two miners fred beck and his partner hank head out to fetch water
19:18when they spot a large hairy ape-like creature watching them from the trees fred who would later
19:25write a book about the encounter describes the creature as nearly seven feet tall and standing
19:31roughly 100 yards away startled hank fires at it missing the beast fred claims that he and hank watch
19:40this creature run down the canyon it is upright running on two legs and fred tries to shoot it three
19:48times
19:51but he misses according to fred's account the men are rattled by the encounter he writes that they
19:58grab their jugs of water and rush back to their cabin fred then explains that they had all agreed
20:04that they needed to get out of there but also that there was no way they could get out of
20:08the forest
20:08before nightfall the men resign themselves to spending one more night in the cabin
20:15eventually they crawl into bed and fall asleep
20:21around midnight fred describes how the men are startled awake by a loud thud against the cabin wall
20:28whatever struck the cabin knocked away some of the chinking revealing a space open to whatever was
20:34outside hank runs over to the opening between the logs in the cabin and is shocked to see three
20:41creatures that look just like the one they shot at earlier suddenly the creatures scatter and the men
20:49hear footsteps on the roof we now believe they are under attack the creatures pound on the roof
20:58and then they start throwing stones they throw them down the fireplace they throw them at the walls and
21:04they throw them on the roof of the cabin fred describes how the creatures are slamming on the cabin
21:10walls while the men are shooting rounds of bullets into the ceiling and into the walls according to fred's
21:37just then one of the creatures throws themselves against the front door to the cabin
21:44and the force is so great that the entire cabin vibrates
21:50fred recounts the miners grabbing a long pole and they wedge one end up against the door and the other
21:57end they place firmly in the ground as these creatures continued their attack fred and hank
22:03started shooting at the door fred wrote we shot round after round
22:12according to fred beck
22:13every wall is shaking and threatening to buckle under the pressure of this attack
22:21fred says the assault then takes a shocking turn
22:25they claim that one of these creatures was able to find a gap in the walls of the cabin
22:30and has grabbed a nearby axe fred recalls rushing over and grabbing the head of the axe and he twists
22:37it so if the beast tries to pull it out it gets caught up against the logs on the inside
22:42at the same time hank fires off a shot toward the beast barely missing fred's hand although the bullet
22:50misses the beast it does scare it for a moment and that gives fred enough time to rip it out
22:55of his hands
22:57according to fred's account the battle continues off and on all night long
23:05finally with the sun shining and no noise outside the miners creep out of the cabin for the first time
23:15according to fred's account he looks up and sees hank aiming his rifle at something in the tree line
23:23and he follows the rifle's direction and is shocked by what he sees
23:28there across a little canyon is a creature about seven feet tall covered in hair he shoots at it
23:36several times and apparently hits the creature and watches as it topples backward into a ravine
23:41he assumes the creature is dead so the men shove items into their packs leaving some things behind
23:47and they leave the forest the story finds its way to the local press and ultimately goes national
23:55and there they're given the name mountain devils the miner's tale which comes to be known as the
24:02attack at ape canyon pushes the existence of a sasquatch into the national consciousness
24:09for a lot of people fred beck's story was their introduction to this idea of an aggressive upright ape-like
24:17creature reporters adventurers and law enforcement officers returned to the spot countless times hoping to
24:24catch a glimpse of the creatures although some have claimed sightings no one has brought back any real
24:30evidence that backs up fred's account
24:39the swamplands of florida home to a thriving ecosystem of hundreds of species including powerful predators
24:48like burmese pythons florida panthers and alligators but these wetlands are so vast and unexplored that
24:58some believe they may also hide a different kind of cryptid a creature locals call the skunk ape
25:06many experts describe the skunk ape as a smaller swamp dwelling cousin of bigfoot perfectly adapted to florida's wetlands
25:15there have been over 350 sightings of an ape-like creature in the southern marshlands since the early 1800s
25:24but the most compelling piece of evidence was captured in mayaka state park
25:30in october of 2000 a florida resident mails a photo and a letter to the sarasota police department
25:36according to the letter the terrified woman is being stalked by an unknown creature right in her backyard
25:42something keeps eating the apples on her back porch she has her grandchildren at her house and is afraid
25:48this wild animal will harm them so she sets up a camera to capture the thief and when she sees
25:56the photo
25:57she is shocked the beast in the photo is immediately identified by believers as the elusive skunk ape
26:07one year later in the same park the photo was taken james hopkins claims that he was hunted by a
26:14terrifying beast that matches the description in the photo
26:21venice florida i grew up there um mostly a retirement community then when i was young i was very strong

26:53you know do whatever it is but the sense of peace james found in that wilderness was about to vanish
27:05this one night me my two buddies we're all enjoying we're laughing we're joking we're drinking beers we
27:14we have lines in the water and then out of nowhere we heard a roar
27:25the sound sounded like a mix between a bear and a tiger with somewhat of a howl
27:35and then it did it again
27:39it was loud and i know there's no more florida panthers out there and they didn't sound like
27:45that and the cat don't sound like that it sounded like it was on top of us it was like

28:00i said we're getting out of here so we all jump on this four wheelers
28:19and all of a sudden i just hear in the trees cracking and branches breaking
28:33i slowed the four-wheeler down hey do you guys hear that
28:38our arms crack our arms crack and you're like hit it hit the gas
28:48this thing's obviously on us
28:52i don't know what it is we haven't seen it we've only heard it we don't know anything
28:58but we are being stopped by this creature james and his friends know they need a place off trail to

29:08and fast and fast i asked my friend in the back said where can we go he goes two girls
29:16i know live
29:17right down on this main road they're the closest house we can get to we pull up to this house
29:28we knock on the door and she's like what are you guys doing here and we start telling
29:33we heard this out in the woods and you were the first place and the closest person we can get

29:38the next thing that happened
29:46we look out the window
29:50this thing was running
29:51this thing in a circle and it did it three times and then on its third lap out it jotted
29:59up to the
29:59shed now the shed was a seven foot shed it was as tall as a shed
30:06it set its arm up on the shed and it just kind of peered up at us and its eyes
30:13just lit up kind
30:14it in the moon and we're like oh my god what is that it looks like a prehistoric orangutan massive
30:24and black and white streak going down it looked like he had an underbite canines from underneath
30:32that is nothing i've ever seen and then you know he just kind of let his arm slip down and

30:40disappeared this is bad now we just lost vision of this thing that's when we started hearing

31:00in 2001 james hopkins and his friends claimed they had been hunted and cornered by a giant ape-like
31:08creature known as the skunk dude we are literally like stuck in this room i'm like
31:15lock the door what we got in here we had like a dresser put in front of the door
31:26then i started smelling a stench it was a mixture of skunk and rotten roadkill
31:36i'm thinking the worst thing ever this thing's gonna come in teeth blazing a gorilla could rip a
31:41man apart with his bare hands what is this thing capable of doing facing what he believes is an
31:48imminent attack james braces for the worst and i'm like warrior mindset has set in this is kill or be
31:55killed i had a diving knife
32:01i'm thinking just start stabbing don't chop at it try to get it through a vital organ
32:10your fear changes to survival fear it's not fight or flight it's live or die
32:21then it got quiet
32:25we wait
32:29i still smell this thing
32:37we stayed there till the sun came up
32:41those are some of the longest hours of my life james returns to his campsite
32:46and finds it in ruins it destroyed the tent did it knocked everything over in the fire pit it
32:54destroyed everything grabbed the tent and i smelled it it smelled like stunk in death you'll never forget
32:59that smell to date there have been so many sightings of a skunk ape in the state of florida that

33:07states fish and wildlife service well they actually include a reference to it in their hunting rules
33:12and regulations pamphlet it says in the florida hunting brochure you are not allowed to partake in
33:20the killing or bagging of skunk ape that night it haunted us down it would have killed us now that

33:35claims of people being hunted by violent monsters is not a modern phenomenon in wisconsin the algonquin
33:44tribe speaks of a predatory spirit called the wendigo a creature said to stalk the weak and isolated
33:54this creature is the very picture of death it's gray and gaunt has emaciated skin yellow hollowed out
34:02eyes bloody blistered lips more modern interpretations describe it with antlers or the skull of a deer
34:08it looks like a mix between a decaying corpse and a wild animal
34:13one recent published encounter comes from a manitoa county hunter who reports seeing a walking corpse
34:20moving through the nipissing swamp and while no sheriff's office has ever documented a wendigo encounter
34:27stories like this continue to surface the wendigo might be ancient but reports of it haven't stopped
34:35there's been 70 to 100 sightings over the last century
34:41one night in 2022 two brothers believe they were stalked by one of these creatures while filming a movie in
34:49the dense forest of eastern wisconsin we were coming back to my parents house to film a movie because
34:58i had just started getting into filmmaking we knew they had this section of forest i needed some forest for
35:05for some shots action i had a couple friends come out my brother aj came with me
35:14we'd been filming some content for it for maybe three-ish four days at this point we had already
35:20filmed everything we had all the camera gear put away we were just chilling in the middle of the night
35:26you know discussing the film and seeing if there was going to be any other shots that we needed to
35:32take tomorrow it's absolutely pitch black out there now and the fire is still going
35:38then just beyond their campsite something in the forest stirs
35:48we started hearing sounds kind of off in the distance toward the river
36:02kept on hearing leaves and sticks break
36:06so we just continued to listen jonah had a hammer and a shovel and he kind of started like scare

36:14off just tink tink tink
36:18and it kept coming closer to us
36:23it sounds like it's walking on two feet
36:28and that's when we kind of started ask ourselves like what do you think this is like what is that
36:35why is it coming closer
36:38we start yelling we're like hey get out of here you know like really who's down there
36:46and the walking doesn't stop
36:50that's when it starts to get really creepy because if it was a deer if it was a raccoon
36:54especially a fox or a coyote you would expect this animal to get out of here but it didn't
37:07while in the deep woods of eastern wisconsin four young filmmakers hear menacing footsteps that advance
37:15toward them but they can't get them to stop now we're we're full-blown yelling
37:22we didn't know is it going to circle around
37:26he's getting closer and closer
37:30aj gets out his flashlight on his phone and i kind of make a little pan across where we're at
37:41we catch some eye shine and
37:50she's pretty scared i mean like we all kind of froze at that point the eyes were
37:59pure white maybe a foot off the ground and it was looking up directly at us
38:06we can't see any of the body because it's too dark we start chucking sticks in that general direction
38:16nothing happened it didn't flinch it didn't blink as the creature holds its ground john takes a risk
38:24i tell aj i'm just gonna get a little bit closer because i'm pretty confident that i can hit it
38:29if
38:29i just get a little bit closer so i grab a stick pretty hefty one and i go a little
38:35bit lower
38:37i can't see anything in front of me i throw my stick as hard as i can where i think
38:44it should be
38:46and that's when i hear like a almost a gargling hiss
38:54aj says it's right in front of you so i start kind of screaming at john i'm like get up

39:09i got back up to him and then he shines the light back over he's looking for it
39:19the eyes they go dark i'm kind of freaking out because i don't know where this thing went
39:25at this point i was still maintaining the small part of my brain that could be convinced that this
39:32was some kind of large animal from the animal kingdom i wanted to believe that
39:38that the eyes reappeared like we saw the eyes open but now it was like seven feet off the ground
39:47just staring at me
39:51it felt like we were in danger the fear was really setting into all of us suddenly just poof disappears
40:03that's when we start running it's time to go it's time to go
40:09i just remember getting to the top of the hill and it's just dead quiet once safe john begins to
40:18process their experience i had an encounter with something i don't know what it was
40:24the next day is when it started getting really strange in the daytime i go back down there i'm going
40:30to see if if there's any evidence and i got some pictures of this we could see where we had

40:37throwing sticks on the ground we could see all the the the clutter on the forest floor and right
40:44there were these x-shaped stick structures in the trees and there were multiple of them exactly where
40:53we reasoned we had seen the eyes i know for a fact they weren't there before because i had just

41:00several days filming in these woods when it comes to unknown creatures and monsters
41:08x's are territorial markers evidence of intelligence or warnings in algonquin folklore this behavior is
41:16associated with a variety of cryptid animals most notably the wendigo
41:21what i felt like i saw and what i felt in the moment was an evil presence the way it
41:31stalked
41:32up to us and pause the way it tried to hide itself and remain undetected no footprints strange structures
41:43in the trees some sort of spiritual aspect to it the history of where we're at tells me
41:49when to go is a reasonable guess across america
41:55ancient woods and endless swamps may hide more than wildlife
