00:01Mesdames et Messieurs, Bonjour, Good afternoon, everyone.
00:07My name is Ino Lee, Vice Chairman of the Korea International Trade Association.
00:13It's a great honor to speak here today at VivaTech.
00:18This event brings together startups, tech leaders, and global thinkers.
00:25And I'm happy to share Korea's experience with all of you.
00:31Today, I will talk about how Korea is moving forward with green trade and green industry.
00:40We call this path the Korea's sustainable shift, a pioneering green trade.
00:54Let's start with how Korea grew its economy through exports.
01:00After the Korean War, our country was very poor and underdeveloped.
01:06But we have focused on trade and exports, and that changed everything.
01:12In 1964, we exported only 100 million U.S. dollars.
01:19In 2024, we are now the sixth largest exporter in the world.
01:26Today, 95% of our economic growth comes from exports.
01:33We are also the 12th biggest economy in the world.
01:37This shows how trade became the engine for Korea's growth.
01:45Korea's success comes from a strong manufacturing base in semiconductors, automobiles, ships, and petrochemicals.
01:56Korea's length falls in global manufacturing competitiveness.
02:02Manufacturing makes up more than 25% of our GDP.
02:07That's one of the highest among the G20 countries.
02:12But now, we have a new challenge.
02:16Many of these industries also produce a lot of greenhouse gases.
02:2136% of Korea's emissions come from industry, and 36% of our exports are from high-emission sectors.
02:33The challenge is clear.
02:36Achieving sustainability while maintaining strong economic competitiveness.
02:43To face this challenge, Korea launched the second wave of Green New Deal.
02:49We aim for net zero by 2050.
02:55By 2025, we are investing over US$55 billion.
03:02The investment goes to key areas such as industry, transport, building, energy production, and agriculture
03:12in order to build a foundation for carbon neutrality.
03:17We are also creating a strong green innovation ecosystem through finance, R&D, and jobs.
03:26This is not a cost.
03:28It's a growth strategy.
03:31So, how do we help companies go green?
03:36We have three big programs.
03:38First, we support innovation in manufacturing, which includes smart systems, low-carbon equipment, and energy-saving tools.
03:50Second, companies with high energy use set their own targets under the energy efficiency program supported by the government policies.
04:01Third, the so-called KEEP-30 program.
04:07Korea's 30 largest energy-consuming companies promise to save energy use by at least 1% every year for five
04:17years.
04:19These programs make going green practical and realistic for businesses.
04:27Let's look at real examples in the steel sector.
04:32The POSCO, Korea's top steel maker, is building a CO2 capture system with a capacity of 1 million tons.
04:42It also became the first steel company in Asia to receive ESG certification.
04:49Hyundai Steel is using a waste heat recovery system.
04:55It recycles 740 gigawatt per hour of energy every year, enough to power tens of thousands of homes.
05:08These actions show how even heavy industries can become greener and smarter.
05:17Korea is the leader in shipbuilding and batteries.
05:22Samsung Heavy Industries is developing ships powered by mesonite dual-fuel engines.
05:31HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will launch the world's first ammonia-powered ship by 2026.
05:40In batteries, LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI are using more renewables and recycling materials.
05:51SK-ON is also using clean energy and partnering with global startups to create better battery systems.
06:01These industries are key to both trade and clean energy transitions.
06:09Hyundai and Kia Motors are making electric and hydrogen cars using advanced materials like carbon fiber to make cars lighter
06:22and more efficient.
06:24In semiconductors, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are leading the shift to clean energy.
06:33Both companies use 100% renewable energy in their overseas sites.
06:41In Korea, they are using solar and geothermal energy and real-time monitoring systems.
06:49This shows that high-tech sectors can lead in sustainability.
06:57Let me briefly talk about start-ups.
07:00Korean companies are working with global startups to go green faster.
07:07Hyundai Motors is developing solar electric vehicle technology with Apollo power.
07:16SK-ON is manufacturing 3D printed cleaner batteries with SAKU.
07:24Hama Ocean and AMOJI are creating clean ship fuel.
07:31POSCO is working with Hysata on hydrogen solutions.
07:37These real partnerships show how big industry and startup can innovate together.
07:46Finally, let's talk about cooperation with the European Union.
07:51We believe sustainability is not optional.
07:55It's essential.
07:57VivaTech Korea and the European Union are deepening cooperation.
08:04We are building the Green Economy Agreement between Korea and the EU to link trade with green goals.
08:13We are also developing a Korean-EU-Green Tech Partnership to lead global supply chain innovation.
08:23By working together, we can go faster and farther in the green transition.
08:31To wrap up, Korea's growth was built on trade and manufacturing.
08:39Now, we are stepping into a new era that's green, digital, and open.
08:46We welcome partnerships.
08:48We support innovation and we believe in global cooperation.
08:54Thank you for your time and I look forward to working together for a sustainable future.
09:01and I hope to see you again in a greener world.
09:04Thank you.
09:05Merci beaucoup.
