Wear the Vibe: Tech, Touch, Fashion, Emotion
Transcript
00:00So thank you everyone for being here. I'm Francesca and I am the co-founder and creative director for QtCircuit
00:09and I also see lots of nice friendly faces there in the crowd and today I'm going to show you
00:17a little bit about the quick history of the company because we started 20 years ago and then I'm going
00:27to show you
00:27two of the latest things that we created and are much like sportier because when we started we were doing
00:34more haute couture pieces and museum pieces and one of a kind and now we're doing more like mass production
00:44and I think it's an interesting progress and maybe my slides are not here but I can just wing it
00:54also without them guys.
00:57Yes, there you go. I wasn't lying when I said we started in 2004 and my co-founder is not
01:05here today, he's in Cupertino and he's having fun as well.
01:12So these are some of the things that we created over the years and we were awarded the best inventions
01:19twice and most recently about three weeks ago a Webby Award and I'll show you where these all went to.
01:28But maybe some of you can recognize a few of these things like this Chanel handbag that was like sold
01:36out within two weeks of launching and some of the sound shirts that go more in detail a little bit
01:43and the galaxy dress that is in the Museum of Science and Industry.
01:48Imagine that that dress has 24,000 hand-embroidered LEDs and it has been in the Museum since 2008 and
01:58it still works.
01:58And I think it's really interesting because when we started the company, all the materials that we have today didn't
02:06exist.
02:07So we had to invent the materials, invent the methods.
02:12And over the years, we started sort of like as a fashion technology brand and we had to invent so
02:20many materials that we have like patents on the methods and the materials that we use in the clothing today.
02:26Because one of the things that we were certain about was that we did not want to have wires inside
02:33garments and so I'm going to show you what the latest version of the sound shirt looks like at the
02:39end of the talk.
02:41But we literally started from the beginning thinking we wanted to feel like real fashion.
02:47But also one of the reasons that we started this company was that we thought that fashion and whatever we
02:54wear is a layer of information on our bodies that allows us to connect to the people around us.
03:02And so the whole ethos of the company is that we create wearables to connect people and to make people
03:11share experiences together.
03:16So I'm going to show you something that we did last year here in Paris and when we started the
03:23company, as I was saying earlier, we had all these like projects for museums and then very slowly we started
03:29going from like hot couture to ready to wear and then some sportswear.
03:34And so like some of the innovations sort of trickle down and every time we do a special project, everything
03:42we learn from that new development process, we boot it into a new collection.
03:48So this one is the collection that we created for Team Kenya here in Paris and the whole idea of
04:00these garments was that they would connect the athletes here in Paris with their family and friends back in Kenya.
04:08And how we did this is that we created the surface on their garments that would connect with their app
04:15and everybody away from home could send messages of encouragement in original language to the athletes.
04:23And one thing that I thought was really beautiful is that this was the travel kit.
04:28They would wear it before their warm-ups and we also had the Paralympian team wear it.
04:35And one thing that the athletes told us was like, I feel like a superhero wearing this.
04:42And so the thing that we want to do is that our clothes can empower people to feel their best.
04:48And I'll show you a little bit of a video here.
05:33I'll show you a little bit of a video here.
05:53So this is one of my favorites because if you saw the clothing, they had a message scrolling.
06:00And one of the messages was Kenya milele, which means Kenya forever.
06:07And another one was machampe to zidi and kaende kaende, which is like, go.
06:12And I think that we worked with the Olympic committee in Kenya as well.
06:19And the design of the fabric actually is inspired by the Maasai shuka cloth.
06:25And so we did a whole research project.
06:28My co-founder is also an anthropologist.
06:30So we interviewed the athletes and then we interviewed the Olympic committee and we spoke with everybody in Kenya.
06:37And we made sure that also the fabric that were just the digitally printed fabrics would match the spirit of
06:45Team Kenya and bring their tradition.
06:48And actually the fabric of the garments is reconfigurable.
06:51So we have zippers that we can use to reconfigure how the garments are worn on the body of the
06:58athletes so that they can wear them like the Maasai traditionally wear them.
07:02And I'm going to move on from things that are more visual and they're just like are more like lights
07:10happening everywhere to the sound shirt theme, which is about haptics and how we connect physically over distance.
07:20And I don't know if many of you know, but we started like the precursor to the sound shirt is
07:27actually called the hug shirt.
07:29That is a t-shirt that lets you hug someone over distance.
07:33And then all of a sudden we had this whole suite of haptic clothing.
07:39So we decided to rename all of them hug and in a more scientific way, which is haptic user interface
07:48garment.
07:49Because we decided to get really serious.
07:53But literally this is how it started.
07:56In which you are here in Paris and you want to send a hug to your best friend in New
08:00York.
08:01You put on the hug shirt, you give yourself a squeeze.
08:04And the sensors capture where you are touching for how strong and how long.
08:09All this data goes Bluetooth into the app.
08:12And then we have a cloud system that ships your hug across the world in real time.
08:18And another person can feel it.
08:21So moving on from this, what we really want to do is that we want people to feel immersed in
08:28every experience.
08:30And sometimes when we talk about the virtual environment, and my personal opinion is that why don't immersive worlds have
08:39sort of taken over and we're still here in real life?
08:42Is that because you can hear things, you can see things, but you cannot feel them.
08:47And I think touch is one of the most important aspects of human interaction.
08:53So this is the new sound shirt.
08:56And the reason we went from the hug shirt to the sound shirt is that we still do both.
09:01But one day, the Jungen Sinfonica Orchestra in Hamburg came to us.
09:06And they asked us if we could, for example, make their deaf patrons feel music.
09:15And we say, okay, we can try.
09:17So we created this software that analyzes music in real time and transforms it into touch sensations.
09:23And we've been doing this now for about seven years.
09:27And every year we do a new version.
09:29And the latest version that we did, I'm going to show you a video for.
09:34We did it in collaboration with Newcastle United Football Club.
09:38And this was our first deployment in a Premier League stadium.
09:42And now we have it in stadiums at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy.
09:46We have it in Jeddah and Riyadh in Saudi.
09:49So I'm going to show you a video of our new version.
10:07On match day, thousands of die-hard Newcastle fans make their way to St James' Park.
10:14Fans like Ryan and David.
10:16Best friends and lifelong supporters.
10:27They experience football differently from other fans.
10:39But their unique perspective has been an inspiration.
10:43A driving force for innovation.
10:47Using cutting-edge technology, a Sella Sam shirt vibrates to the noise of the crowd on the game.
10:53It's almost like you're wearing the stadium.
10:56This technology has the power to change the way deaf people experience live football.
11:02Helping them feel more connected to the fans and more connected to the game.
11:07Hello, how is everybody?
11:10For the Tottenham game, you's all going to be mascots.
11:12So you get to walk out with us in front of the crowd.
11:18So you get to walk out with us in front of the crowd.
11:21Go and walk out with us.
11:22All right, look, all my eyes.
