00:00Time now for a segment inside VivaTech.
00:10And we head to the main floor now where our reporter Luke Brown is standing by Luke.
00:17Hi Thomas, giving you a chance really to catch up with some of the key issues here at VivaTech.
00:23Of course one of the things that's very keen to be demonstrated here is the diversity of the nations here
00:29and the nation of honor is the Republic of Korea.
00:32There's 45 startups here. They're representing over 5,000 startups back home in Korea.
00:39And the first one is for people such as myself or perhaps a little even more short-sighted than me.
00:43We've got this startup that works with Samsung, Relumino, Mr. Jong-Chul.
00:51Thank you very much for being with us.
00:53You work on improving not just for the short-sighted but for the low-sighted.
00:57Tell me a bit more about your work.
00:58Okay, so my name is Jo Jung-Hun and my project Relumino is named after Latin world, meaning light up
01:06again.
01:07And as the name implies, it's a visual aid that helps the visually impaired people to see things clear through
01:14the glass and through the TV.
01:16And, you know, there are more than 290 million of visually impaired people in the world and totally blind people
01:24only account for 10%.
01:26And 90% of the visually impaired people have low vision.
01:30So Relumino is designed for those 90% of the visually impaired people who have low vision.
01:35Can you show us a bit more about how it functions?
01:38Is the focus on the glasses or is it on the TV screen?
01:41Yeah, actually the same algorithm is implemented in TV and this glass.
01:46So the camera of the glass captures images that you are looking at and Relumino application processes these images in
01:54real time.
01:55And this image processing consists of various functions like edge enhancement, contrast enhancement, stuff like that.
02:02So it's a combination of all these different algorithms to enhance the sight of the visually impaired.
02:08Okay, and on the screen here, this green screen, is this an improvement for people, would you consider?
02:14Yeah, yes.
02:15So it may look real to you unless you're visually impaired.
02:18So it's kind of edge enhancement to boost contrast sensitivity of the visually impaired and the same algorithm is inside
02:26here.
02:27So you can just wear the glass and look around and the same algorithm is here.
02:33And it is boosting the contrast of the visually impaired by emphasizing the outlines of an object.
02:40So the people who have low vision can perceive images more easily.
02:46Okay, Mr. Cho, thanks so much for that.
02:47I'm going to have to leave you because we've got a load of other things to see here on the
02:50Korean stand.
02:51So I'm just going to have a little walk where Pascal is walking backwards and we're going to go to
02:54a completely different story here.
02:56There was vision and the medical system here.
02:57Now we are talking about hydroponics or even fogponics, if I'm correct.
03:02This is Li Min-ji.
03:04You're putting a GSMP system.
03:06Can you tell me a bit more about the product that you're proposing here today?
03:11Okay.
03:12Hi.
03:13Our core technology is we are using fogponics, one of the hydroponic methods.
03:18When you use the fogponics, when you use the fogponics, it grows fast.
03:23You can get a lot of it and the environment controlled as automatically.
03:28Okay.
03:29Can you tell me a little bit more about why this product is both unique but also why it's useful
03:35for a place such as Korea?
03:37Our product only needs less than 2% of the water than soil cultivations and the electricity consumption cut by
03:4655%.
03:48And just to broaden out the topic, how important is it for you, for your startup, to be present here
03:54at VivaTech?
03:57This is an opportunity for us.
04:00And in Korea, Korea is not familiar with hydroponics.
04:04And with the soil cultivation, there is a waste of nutrient solutions flow into the river and the water pollution
04:11is getting serious.
04:13With using our product, there is only less than 2% of the emissions.
04:17You can protect the environment.
04:20And for the issue of being here in VivaTech, how important is it for you to be able to get
04:25outside of the K-Tech sector
04:27and to be in the ecosystem here in Europe or on the ecosystems that are also represented here at VivaTech?
04:32I'm sorry.
04:33How important is it for you to deal with the other ecosystems that are present here at VivaTech?
04:40The other national geographical ecosystems?
04:44The climate change and the environment getting really serious.
04:50So we have to figure out the better product with a protect environment.
04:55And we have to protect the water, pollutions and pesticide-free products.
05:01Using our product, you can protect health and the environment at the same time.
05:05Lee Min-ji, thank you so much for showing us your product.
05:09We've got one time for one more product here at the Korean stand.
05:13As I said, there are 45 startups represented here.
05:16And a whole diversity, a whole array of different types of product.
05:20Thank you so much.
05:21This is LDC.
05:23You work with recycling and upcycling tires.
05:27So we've seen a whole variety of different products present here on the Korean stand.
05:31Tell me a bit more about yours.
05:33Why is it unique and what are you bringing to the VivaTech show?
05:39Okay, so what we basically does is we collect waste tires and we run through a process called pyrolysis.
05:49And through the pyrolysis, we break down tires' chemical structure and make oil as well as a material called recovered
06:00carbon black.
06:00It is relatively easy to produce oil out of tire, but it is extremely difficult to make the recovered carbon
06:10black the quality as high as the quality that meets tire company standards.
06:16Because tires are life carrying vehicle.
06:19So the quality assurance process is extremely rigorous.
06:23And there is only a handful of companies that have passed the global tire company's quality assurance tests.
06:31And we are one of the only ones amongst them.
06:35Mr. Choi, thank you so much for demonstrating the variety, the diversity really here present, here at VivaTech, here on
06:41the Republic of Korea stand.
06:44Back over to you in the studio, Thomas.
06:45Thank you.
06:46Thank you.
