In a shocking incident in Bengaluru, a 33/34-year-old US-returned software engineer, Rohan Chandra Bhat, was arrested on February 11, 2026, for allegedly murdering his parents at their upscale villa in Vignan Nagar.

The victims were identified as Naveen Chandra Bhat (60), a retired Indian Navy Captain, and Dr Shyamala Bhat (55), a practising dentist. The attack took place at their residence in Adarsh Vista, a gated community under the HAL Police Station limits.

According to Bengaluru City Police, the dispute began on Tuesday night and escalated on Wednesday morning between 7:30 am and 8:00 am. Neighbours, alerted by screams, rushed the couple to Manipal Hospital, where they were declared brought dead.

Preliminary investigation suggests the crime was triggered by a financial dispute. Rohan, who had returned from the United States three years ago and was reportedly unemployed, allegedly demanded ₹4 lakh from his parents to fund a startup venture. When they refused and questioned his lack of steady employment, a heated argument ensued, leading to the alleged knife attack.

After his arrest, Rohan reportedly displayed unstable behaviour and gave contradictory statements. A preliminary medical evaluation indicated possible schizophrenia (psychosis).

Instead of being lodged in regular custody, he has been referred to National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) for psychiatric assessment and medical fitness certification.

The couple’s daughter, who is based in the United States, is travelling to Bengaluru to complete post-mortem formalities and perform the final rites.
