Janjgir-Champa (Chhattisgarh): A wedding procession (baraat) in Janjgir-Champa district turned into a scene of chaos on the night of February 11, 2026, when a speeding heavy vehicle ploughed into guests dancing along the roadside, leaving multiple people injured.

Incident Details:
The accident occurred around 10:00 PM near Ghivra village under the jurisdiction of Birra Police Station.

According to eyewitnesses, the baraat was moving along the roadside, and guests were dancing in a cluster near the road to DJ music when a heavy “capsule” vehicle (reportedly a tanker) approached from the Shivrinarayan side. The vehicle allegedly veered off the road, crushed a roadside tent, and rammed into the group of celebrants.

Videos circulating on social media capture the sudden impact, showing the transition from festivities to panic, with guests scrambling to escape and others rushing to help the injured.

Casualties and Injuries:
Police reports indicate that at least four to five people sustained injuries. Among them:
● Usha Bai Dewangan (53) – Critical condition after a wheel reportedly ran over her thigh; referred to a hospital in Bilaspur.
● Tara Chand Dewangan – District Congress president of neighbouring Sarangarh-Bilaigarh; injured in the impact.
● Bhuri Bai (65)
● Radhika Dewangan
● Redhuka Dewangan (55)

While one victim remains in serious condition and was shifted to Bilaspur for advanced treatment, the others are undergoing treatment locally.

Driver Detained:
Angry guests reportedly apprehended and assaulted the driver before police arrived. Officers later detained the driver, seized the vehicle, and registered a case.

According to police, the driver claimed he dozed off at the wheel, resulting in loss of control. Authorities have stated that this claim is being verified as part of the ongoing investigation.

Investigation Underway:
Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the driver’s statement and vehicle condition. Further legal proceedings are in progress.

The incident has sparked concern over road safety during public celebrations, especially when gatherings spill onto active roadways.
