00:00:30Hello and welcome to Highbury Highs, a celebration of all the great moments and memories since
00:00:55Arsene Wenger's first fall season.
00:00:57We have an assortment of classic games, unforgettable moments and a look at some of the star players.
00:01:03We feature those games that went down to the wire, testing the nerves of both players and
00:01:07fans.
00:01:09There are so many great memories, but here's a closer look at those moments that hold a
00:01:13special place in every Gooners heart.
00:01:17In a team brimming with talent, we profile some of the established stars and future Highbury
00:01:21heroes.
00:01:22And as if that wasn't enough, there's a liberal dose of those games you love to remember.
00:01:27It's goals galore as the Gunners destroy the opposition in some memorable clashings.
00:01:33Let's start with one of those nail biters.
00:01:35First up is from this year's Champions League as Arsenal made an epic return at Highbury
00:01:39this season.
00:01:40Well, certainly in range for the Ukrainian club.
00:01:46Here's Bakarev.
00:01:47Deflected.
00:01:48Seaman stranded.
00:01:49Arsenal are behind.
00:01:50Oh and Barabay.
00:01:51It's a tight angle, but he's made light of that and it's 2-0.
00:02:06We were in a position where we could lose our home game and everybody thought that to play
00:02:09at Highbury, it was the first big test in the Champions League at Highbury.
00:02:16And after 20 minutes we were 2-0 down, so I thought everybody would laugh at saying, look,
00:02:20it's not Highbury, it's not Wembley, it's the team.
00:02:24We took the game to them and really should have been in front.
00:02:28So we knew that with the home advantage we had and the fans were, they were fantastic
00:02:33on the night and as they have been in all the European games and they lifted us on.
00:02:38And now Dixon.
00:02:39Arsenal still striving to repair some damage before half-time, they've got a penalty.
00:02:49A vital kick for Thierry Henry.
00:02:53Ovet saved it, Wiltor, it's a goal.
00:03:04Silva and Wiltor following up 2-1.
00:03:09The fact that we came back to 2-1 and then to have Martin to score these two goals was
00:03:16unbelievable.
00:03:17I just kind of went and hung around the penalty box and the ball came, the first one was a
00:03:22bit of fortune, it hit me on the shoulder.
00:03:25Swung in by Silvino.
00:03:27It's in!
00:03:28Off Martin Keown!
00:03:30It wasn't a case of shutting up shop, you know 2-2 were happy, we felt we could win it
00:03:51and fortunately we did.
00:03:53Arsenal really going for it now, Kanu, Keown again!
00:04:00A Highbury hero and a most unlikely one.
00:04:04And that set us on our way really.
00:04:29Since Dennis Bergkamp joined Arsenal in 1995, fans have been privileged to witness his breathtaking
00:04:35displays of skill and a fair few impressive goals.
00:04:38His contributions haven't been lost on his colleagues either.
00:04:42Where do you start with Dennis?
00:04:44He's a fantastic player.
00:04:46He's a world class player.
00:04:47The most skilful player I've ever seen in training.
00:04:51It's just unbelievable, you can't get the ball off him.
00:04:54Always try and get picked on his side.
00:04:59What he offers is always to give him the possibility to give the killing ball.
00:05:04I believe that he is less now a scoring player, but he's maybe a more passing player.
00:05:11I remember when I think it was against Leicester, it was at Highbury.
00:05:20I didn't score, but everything just seemed to work out.
00:05:24All the passes I made was a dangerous moment.
00:05:27That's a lovely ball from Bergkamp.
00:05:32And Dennis Bergkamp really pulling the strings for Arsenal.
00:05:36Parler!
00:05:38He's a magician.
00:05:44And Vieira's away.
00:05:48Dennis Bergkamp goal is nearly always a special goal.
00:05:51It's not a goal-score goal.
00:05:55It's most of the time a goal that needs a lot of skill.
00:06:00His first time he scored, I think it was Southampton at home.
00:06:03He had a little run and then cut back on his right foot
00:06:05and hit this ball right in the top corner.
00:06:07I think that one sticks out.
00:06:10And here's Bergkamp.
00:06:12Oh, it's a beauty!
00:06:14From Dennis Bergkamp!
00:06:17I believe as well the goal against Barcelona was a fantastic one
00:06:21at Wembley last year.
00:06:24You won't see a better hat-trick than against Leicester away from home.
00:06:32Looking back, at that moment you think of getting the points
00:06:36and trying to win the game, but it's been a few years now
00:06:41and then you look back and when you see them it's quite special.
00:06:44I remember the first goal was a corner kick.
00:06:46I tried to curl it around the goalkeeper in the far corner.
00:06:55The second goal was a bit of luck.
00:06:57I tried to lift it over the goalie.
00:06:59With a little touch from the goalie, it went up in the air and in the goal.
00:07:12The third one was for me one of the best goals I've ever scored.
00:07:16I think everything in that goal, everything that I was thinking about at the moment,
00:07:22happened with my feet and that's something special of course for football.
00:07:25Oh, Bergkamp might be in again. Look at this! What a hat-trick from Dennis Bergkamp!
00:07:34Yeah, my first touch was quite good out of the air.
00:07:39Second touch I took it in around the defender and the third touch was a shot at goal.
00:07:43Probably the best hat-trick I've ever seen.
00:07:48Arsenal sending a left footer across to take it, it's Stephen Hughes.
00:08:00Keown's come forward, Adams there as well.
00:08:05And the height of Vieira.
00:08:11It's Adams!
00:08:15Arsenal have a lead they thoroughly deserve.
00:08:23They've studied well here and scored while they're on top through the skipper.
00:08:29Out came Schmeichel, but Adams got there first.
00:08:35And that's given away weakly by Blomqvist. Vieira!
00:08:42Tremendous piece of retrieving there by Jaap Stamm,
00:08:45and goodness me, Manchester United needed that.
00:08:50Giggs.
00:08:54Flick forward by Vieira.
00:08:57Loop forward by Overmars, and Anelka's onside!
00:09:00Saved by Schmeichel, Anelka again!
00:09:05Arsenal, two goals to the good!
00:09:08Arsenal, two goals to the good!
00:09:14So on comes Freddie Jungberg.
00:09:21Overmars.
00:09:22Overmars again, Hughes on the move.
00:09:25I don't think he meant to play it there, but Jungberg!
00:09:26What a start in Arsenal's colours for the Swede!
00:09:27Stephen Hughes may have been looking for Bergkamp, but he found Jungberg and he found the net.
00:09:32And this is simply splendid for the London club.
00:09:38One of the amazing teams,
00:09:39the best opposition to London.
00:09:41It's been a good start in Arsenal's colours for the Swede.
00:09:44And people now are only a great start in Arsenal's colours for the Swede.
00:09:46Stephen Hughes may have been looking for Bergkamp, but he found Jungberg and he found the net.
00:09:49the net and this is simply splendid for the London club
00:10:06one of the enduring images in every Arsenal fans memory will be in right
00:10:11breaking Cliff Bastin's Arsenal goal-scoring record notching up an
00:10:14incredible 179 goals for the Gunners starting the 97-98 season he was only a
00:10:19few goals away Dennis Bergkamp recalls the striker's blistering form but in the
00:10:24beginning of the season he was so so important from not wrong the first game
00:10:30against Leeds the way he scored the goal there that was typically in right right
00:10:36away
00:10:38goal for Arsenal from an angle no one should have taken a shot here he just did it
00:10:46and it's called a goal
00:10:50if you look at that beginning period that was that really cut us started and yeah
00:10:56he was very very important to them
00:11:00back from Bergkamp the air a shot oh it's right
00:11:06must be a good break here but it's too far ahead of Ian Wright but Shaw's mistake and Ian Wright is in
00:11:19scoring twice against Coventry put Wright just one goal away from the record but against Spurs the net
00:11:25that's eluded him great chance for right off the bar
00:11:29right
00:11:33black shot and Ian Wright this time no
00:11:37didn't score for a while yes and he said no no I'm not obsessed by that not
00:11:42but I thought he had sleepless nights
00:11:44the moment finally arrived against Bolton at home
00:11:49Bergkamp and Ian Wright's in the clear he can equal the record here he has done
00:11:57double emotion really because he thought he'd done it the goal before and went running around like a nutcase and
00:12:08took his shirt off for the record and it wasn't in fact he'd equaled it he hadn't actually beat it so
00:12:14he put his shirt back on and then then went and scored another another goal at tapping I think to actually break the record
00:12:21and Dennis Bergkamp is carving away through here oh and it's right
00:12:33it's history at Highbury Ian Wright overtakes Cliff Baston as Arsenal's all-time goal scorer
00:12:45a wonderful wonderful achievement
00:12:48probably never score an easier goal as well it was a couple of yards just tap the ball over the line
00:13:13but that's some righty up you know he was a
00:13:15a tap-in merchant and also he could score the spectacular as we know about
00:13:20it was a special moment he nearly wanted to stop the game because he
00:13:27broke something unbelievable
00:13:29he deserved it to do it and
00:13:33because he's still a special player in the memories of every Arsenal fan
00:13:38well they've worked it short from the corner
00:13:53wise
00:13:57oh and Doobry
00:13:59and it's turned in by Gus Poyet first blood to Chelsea
00:14:02Pierre
00:14:07Pierre again Chelsea asking for handball referee saw nothing wrong
00:14:15and it's Dennis Bergkamp and it's 1-1
00:14:18in the end very nicely worked by Arsenal
00:14:32and the calmest the finishes from the Dutchman
00:14:36and it falls for Bergkamp and that's 2-1 to Arsenal
00:14:41and it falls for Bergkamp and it falls for Bergkamp and that's 2-1 to Arsenal
00:14:55well maybe the sheer presence of Bergkamp was enough but there was some chaos around there
00:15:04from the team in blue
00:15:05and it gave Bergkamp the opportunity
00:15:08that's a wonderful ball by Frank Leboeuf
00:15:14Zala
00:15:18I was quite happy with the 2-2 and if you look through the history of recent years
00:15:29and even of Arsenal it looks like it's always that never die spirit
00:15:34and that gives sometimes the managers enjoyable surprises
00:15:40and Nigel Winterbourne was one of those
00:15:43I'm remembering getting the ball and I think our crowd have sort of got used to Nigel
00:15:48shooting from a certain distance that season
00:15:51and we were all shouting shoot down that side
00:15:54because our fans were down that side
00:15:55and when he hit it I think he ran over to him
00:15:59telling him to be quiet
00:16:01Now Winterbourne
00:16:02Chelsea backing off and letting Nigel Winterbourne slam it into the top corner
00:16:08what an extraordinary ending here
00:16:11a golden nugget of a goal from Nigel Winterbourne
00:16:17and it's Chelsea 2 Arsenal 3
00:16:20He doesn't score so often but when he scores goals he was always stunning goals
00:16:27and that was really one of them
00:16:29Both me and Nigel don't score many but when we do we try to enjoy the celebrations
00:16:36and he nearly flew himself in the crowd that day
00:16:43Run by Parle
00:16:45Birdcap
00:16:47Run by Parle, Bergkamp, oh, Henry, a very sweet start here for Arsenal.
00:17:17Lovely cross from Ray Parle and tucked away by Thierry Henry, in comes Keown, Martin Keown, at
00:17:28the second attempt and a second goal for Arsenal, well Leeds lost sight of Keown and they lost
00:17:40a goal because of that.
00:17:49Sylvinho.
00:17:55Still Sylvinho.
00:17:58Can he go all the way?
00:18:01Well it's Keown's goal, but it's the brilliant Brazilian who set it up for him.
00:18:10Well no wonder they're dancing in triumph.
00:18:15Sylvinho sliced Leeds apart and then it was left to Keown to make it Leeds nil, Arsenal
00:18:22three.
00:18:24Vieira over Mars, can he get in on the act?
00:18:28He can!
00:18:34Arsenal lead at Leeds by four goals to nil.
00:18:47David Seaman has been the Arsenal number one for over a decade, pulling off hundreds of
00:18:51vital saves down the years.
00:18:53Those who know him best tell us what puts him at the top of his profession.
00:18:57I think goalkeepers need a certain presence about him and he's got that, noticed that
00:19:03from the first day he was here, his general size of the bloke, you know, puts you off and
00:19:09you're only shot at him.
00:19:13His technique is outstanding, he knows what every part of his body is doing and I think
00:19:18as well when he's under pressure he's very good.
00:19:20The Sant Doria penalty save in the Cup Winners' Cup, that sort of summed him up, you know,
00:19:34the big occasion and we needed a big save from him and he pulled out an unbelievable save.
00:19:41He's a very special keeper and like, you know, he's always, I think he's going to be around for a few more years yet.
00:19:59Over Mars.
00:20:01Might get it back from Bergkamp here.
00:20:04And Mark Overmars.
00:20:07Oh, so close!
00:20:10It was always a big game and gaining to the game, we knew that, you know, and we knew we had to get a result to push him
00:20:17because I think there was quite a few points clear at the time, so it was make or break for us really.
00:20:23Parler.
00:20:25Well, it's Overmars who is causing Manchester United most of the problems here in the first half.
00:20:31Still Overmars!
00:20:33We should have won that game in the first half because Mark Overmars had a few chances in the first half against Curtis.
00:20:46I can remember because I wasn't playing, Alex was playing and he had a great game.
00:20:51And Coles in the clear!
00:20:53Marvellous stop by Manninger!
00:20:56And then I can remember when he scored and there's a famous guy that's in the crowd that's like, you know, cheering and all his veins are popping out and everything.
00:21:07And from Bergkamp, and then from Anelka, and here's Overmars!
00:21:15Oh, and Arsenal have got a goal!
00:21:18How much will that mean come the shakedown at the end of the season?
00:21:26It's Mark Overmars who thoroughly deserves it today.
00:21:31Final whistle!
00:21:34And Arsenal have won at Old Trafford!
00:21:36It's a great feeling whenever you beat Man United, you know, and I do know that they feel the same way as well.
00:21:43Because I've heard Gary Neville mention it a few times, but, you know, that's going to be the big games.
00:21:49And more often than not, the title is decided within them games.
00:21:54But to go there and beat them 1-0 was fantastic.
00:21:58It was a special day.
00:21:59On that day, we were all convinced that we would win the championship.
00:22:13That's a clever work from Kanu.
00:22:25And Vieira's clear!
00:22:27Patrick Vieira!
00:22:29Who's been in the news so much,
00:22:33hits the headlines for very much the right reason.
00:22:36Beautifully taken!
00:22:37It's very frustrating because we were playing well the first ten minutes.
00:22:44One-nil for us.
00:22:45All the thing was going right.
00:22:47And then suddenly they scored two goals and then your mind is going down.
00:22:52Oh, and Hunt knocks it in for Charlton!
00:22:56Robinson's cross.
00:23:02Hunt at the far post.
00:23:03He scored again!
00:23:07I scored that good as well when we went back at the beginning of the second half.
00:23:11That was very important for us because we went 2-2.
00:23:16Adams.
00:23:17Oh, Henry!
00:23:18He makes it look so easy.
00:23:27Just what Arsenal needed at the start of the second half.
00:23:30It's 2-2.
00:23:31And it's a typically tremendous goal from Henry.
00:23:38But then they scored again 3-2.
00:23:40And then Patrick scored again and I scored and then Silvino scored.
00:23:52But, you know, it's always good when you have to win a game like that.
00:23:56Can't it?
00:23:57Here come Arsenal again.
00:23:59Vieira!
00:24:01That's 3-3!
00:24:03And two today from Patrick Vieira!
00:24:05Canu rolled it into his path.
00:24:06And Vieira ran it into the bottom corner.
00:24:15Canu.
00:24:20Oré, the angle's tight, but he makes light of that.
00:24:26Arsenal lead here.
00:24:34Final lead here, by four goals to three.
00:24:43Well, it's been a really dramatic London derby,
00:24:47in which Charlton have played a full part.
00:24:50Silvino, and it's not finished yet.
00:24:54Oh, a sensational Silvino goal.
00:25:005-3 now.
00:25:04It was very important to me, because we were losing the match,
00:25:11and, of course, everybody wants to win,
00:25:16and especially if you can time to score.
00:25:22When I score, I take off my shirt.
00:25:25I don't know, it's not good.
00:25:27I will not do it anymore, but it's a motion.
00:25:30It's a motion.
00:25:42Winterberg.
00:25:45Bergkamp.
00:25:46Oh, that's one for the Dennis Bergkamp catalogue.
00:25:54Just shifts the ball to the right to give him half a side of goal.
00:26:03Top, top class.
00:26:04Fiera.
00:26:05Two for Arsenal, two for Bergkamp.
00:26:13Two for Arsenal, two for Bergkamp.
00:26:17Barnsley cut apart through the centre.
00:26:24By Patrick Fiera's pass.
00:26:27And there was net catching the Dutchmen.
00:26:32and Arsenal with so much momentum Bergkamp and it's a tap-in for Parler Barnsley looking
00:26:44for offside it's not given it's three and this one gift wrapped for Ray Parler by Bergkamp
00:26:56who was leading the Yorkshire club a merry dance
00:27:02swung out by Petit turned in at the near post it's David Platt
00:27:21a fourth for the Gunners and this one from a set play and a beautiful header from Platt
00:27:30and Vieira will win this back and Arsenal can break again
00:27:39Owen Wright, Ian Wright can get in on the act here and he does
00:27:46well he's enjoying the day but Barnsley on a rare visit to Highbury are certainly not
00:28:02they are now five goals behind
00:28:05already you can sense party mood at Highbury but the job's still got to be done here
00:28:22Petit with a free kick
00:28:26it's in!
00:28:31well it was Tony Adams at the back post who jumped with an Everton defender I think it was Slavin
00:28:36Billich it's an own goal
00:28:38Watson backpedalling
00:28:45Overmars looking to take him on
00:28:47it's two
00:28:49it's trickled in
00:28:50for Mark Overmars
00:28:52well the trophy is very nearly in Arsenal's grasp
00:29:02Overmars
00:29:06it's a wonderful run from Overmars
00:29:10it's three
00:29:11Arsenal turning on the style
00:29:19Bolt
00:29:26I remember it because Steve Bolt never lets us forget it because of his pass to Tony
00:29:31little flick over the top and finished it like Dennis Bergkamp or Ian Wright it was a great finish
00:29:36you know it makes you think that it was meant to be because not only did Tony score the fourth goal with his left foot
00:29:43he was also put through by Baldy you know so that's when you know things are going well
00:29:48two legends together and the symbol of the Arsenal defence over the years and the fact that it was crowning of their season because Steve Bolt played a big part in that season
00:30:07and Tony Adams finished the duel off
00:30:09and it's Adams put through by Bold
00:30:14and it's Adams put through by Bold
00:30:18oh that sums it all up
00:30:22sealed by the skipper
00:30:27Arsenal the pride of the Premiership
00:30:31the champions
00:30:38it was a great day
00:30:41it was a great day
00:30:42not only did we win the title that day but we won it in front of our own fans as well
00:30:46which is a memory that I'll always have because I can remember seeing Man United doing it
00:30:50and they did a lap of honour at the end of the game and all their stands all the cameras were going off and everything and I just thought wow you know it must be great to win it in front of your own fans
00:31:01a lap of honour that's fully deserved and still the cup final to come
00:31:08it is
00:31:23Arsene Wenger mined another French gem when he bought Juventus winger Thierry Henry and converted him into one of the Premiership Supreme Marksman
00:31:30Dennis Bergkamp recalls when he signed for the club
00:31:33the club I remember when he first came here he came as a wing winner but you
00:31:40could already see that yeah his favorite position was up front because he needs
00:31:46a space he needs the space to to run in and in that way he's yes similar how
00:31:54Nicholas and Elka was he he wants to go forward he wants to score goals and in
00:31:58my opinion Jerry has more skills to do so you know when I first arrived to play
00:32:07for Arsenal it was a bit difficult for me because I had to be learned to play as a
00:32:10striker and it wasn't that easy you know he scored for about 12 games when he
00:32:19when he came and then all of a sudden he just took off and the bloke just can't
00:32:24stop scoring now which is great Adams already with a turn and a shot and he's
00:32:33opened his arsenal account I remember I think Tony Adams gave me the ball and I
00:32:38just wanted to control that board and turn and shoot very very hard and he's you
00:32:44know a little bit Ian Wright issue in his confidence he goes up and down in in sort
00:32:50of moods when he's scoring and when he's not and and right he was the same and I
00:32:54think oh all great goal scorers are the same they go through patches of not
00:32:58scoring and they salt when they don't score and the chair is the same but
00:33:03fortunately he doesn't salt very often the steep ball trying to get across but
00:33:09already will look to take him on here oh the power of it it's spent past Sorensen
00:33:16he's got more skills to get himself one-on-one with the goalie or with
00:33:22defenders he knows how to how to pass them and it's a very very good finishing
00:33:29what will remain in the memories is that goal against Man United because it's the
00:33:34unexpected plus the efficiency and I think it's a little bit theory it is as
00:33:41well we'll be remembered many times for special goals all right I just make a
00:33:57little one to to to get just in front of then it's a ring and then when the ball
00:34:02came I just wanted to to turn the quick as possible the quick as possible and
00:34:07but then I flicked the ball then the ball went a bit in the hair and I turn and
00:34:13and I shot it was a long time I didn't score and you know sometimes you have to
00:34:21you have to to try some difficult thing and that's what I did and the ball went in
00:34:26the back of the net he's only 23 years old and but of course you will have periods
00:34:32where he will score a little bit less but his unbelievable potential
00:34:37oh
00:34:39alright
00:34:40I trust good
00:34:55to the center
00:34:59to the center
00:35:01Andre Floreau, scores!
00:35:10Wise, cheeky back heel.
00:35:13Petroscu!
00:35:15We weren't playing particularly well at the time.
00:35:17We've been in this situation too many times to sort of say,
00:35:19oh, that's it, we've lost.
00:35:20I don't think any of the players at the club
00:35:22ever think we've lost the game,
00:35:24but it certainly wasn't looking very good at the time.
00:35:27And we needed the next goal,
00:35:29and Magic Man turned up with a goal.
00:35:32Over Mars.
00:35:36Dixon.
00:35:38Back for over Mars.
00:35:40Canoe! Oh, and Arsenal have got one back!
00:35:50Just stuck out of foot, and it was enough.
00:35:53After he scored the first one,
00:35:54he said, keep giving me the ball, I will score another one.
00:35:57And sure enough, he did.
00:35:59Dixon.
00:36:01Now over Mars,
00:36:02and a different feel at Stamford Bridge.
00:36:05Arsenal have clawed themselves back into the game.
00:36:08And Canoe has scored a second!
00:36:10We changed the system again to a very risky offensive system,
00:36:22and I felt at that time that when we came back to 2-2,
00:36:27it was already a miracle because the game had gone.
00:36:29And I could feel Canoe that day was, he was on fire,
00:36:32and you just have to see the third goal he scored,
00:36:34and you will understand.
00:36:36It's just unbelievable.
00:36:38And I remember all my life when Canoe went down to the corner,
00:36:39I told him to keep the ball in there because I know he's capable of doing that.
00:36:44It was his day.
00:36:45It was his day.
00:36:46It was his day.
00:36:47.
00:36:48.
00:36:49.
00:36:50.
00:36:51.
00:36:52.
00:36:53.
00:36:54.
00:37:22.
00:37:25The pressure was on as we were going up into the league,
00:37:27you know, everybody was talking about the double.
00:37:30Bob Wilson was constantly reminding me that he was the only goalkeeper ever to win the double at Arsenal.
00:37:35So, you know, the pressure was building up.
00:37:38And once we got the title out of the way, you know, it was just,
00:37:42right, you know, we've got one, we're not going to end up with nothing.
00:37:45And we just seemed to relax a little bit.
00:37:47And I felt that when you can make a double, you have not to miss it.
00:37:52And fortunately, I felt always it was important to score the first goal and we could do that.
00:37:58.
00:37:59.
00:38:00.
00:38:01.
00:38:02.
00:38:03.
00:38:04.
00:38:05.
00:38:06.
00:38:07.
00:38:08.
00:38:09.
00:38:10.
00:38:11.
00:38:12.
00:38:13.
00:38:14.
00:38:15.
00:38:16.
00:38:17.
00:38:18.
00:38:19.
00:38:20.
00:38:21.
00:38:22.
00:38:23.
00:38:24.
00:38:25.
00:38:26.
00:38:27.
00:38:28.
00:38:29.
00:38:30.
00:38:31.
00:38:32.
00:38:33.
00:38:34.
00:38:35.
00:38:36.
00:38:37.
00:38:38.
00:38:39.
00:38:40.
00:38:41.
00:38:42.
00:38:43.
00:38:44.
00:38:45Well, it was a brilliant decision in the end by the linesman to let it go, and the 19-year-old
00:38:53has scored in the FA Cup final.
00:38:55It was a special day, not only because it was the FA Cup, but I felt as well that it
00:39:03was an exceptional season, and that's very difficult to do in England because you play
00:39:07so many derbies in London, to win the championship is difficult, to win the FA Cup is difficult.
00:39:11We went through three or four times with replays, so it was just special.
00:39:28I won the Cups in every country I worked, so it was the feeling that I made for the Cup.
00:39:41Arsenal left-back Silvino displays the kind of attacking skills, usually in the preserve,
00:39:53of premium-rate strikers. Lee Dixon explains why.
00:39:56He's Brazilian, so need I say more. I think he'll be the next Brazilian left-back regular,
00:40:07once that other fella from Real Madrid hangs his boots up.
00:40:11He's got a lot of understanding now with the back four, and knows what his duties are,
00:40:23and everybody knows what he's like going forward. He's got great speed, he's got a great shot,
00:40:28and he keeps going on for 90 minutes as well.
00:40:33He's such an intelligent boy, and he wants to be the best, and he's capable every day in training
00:40:41to show that he wants to be the best. He was maybe not the best of compliments with Mark Overmars,
00:40:47because Mark liked more defending person behind him, but Silvino, when somebody tucks in to go
00:40:54and take the wing, he's very good, and his crosses are good, his final ball is good, and he can score as well.
00:41:03And it breaks here for Silvino. Oh, what a goal!
00:41:09It was the most important goal that I've done to Arsenal. I was very happy after the goal,
00:41:18and especially it's a difficult goal, and a great goal.
00:41:22When the team has the ball, everybody has to try to attack, and when you say you have a player like Silvino
00:41:28and tell him don't cross halfway line, you kill him.
00:41:32Silvino, and it's not finished yet.
00:41:34Oh, a sensational Silvino goal!
00:41:52Savage.
00:41:55Easily picked off by Arsenal.
00:41:57Oh, and Anelka, is he gonna get there first? He is!
00:42:011-0 to Arsenal, Nicholas Anelka.
00:42:10Casey Keller didn't know whether to come or stay, he stayed in the end,
00:42:15and had absolutely no chance at all.
00:42:22Guppy.
00:42:27For Elliott.
00:42:31Anelka's here first.
00:42:36And Bergkamp, and Anelka's in behind, there's no offside.
00:42:40Nicholas Anelka scores his second, with some similarities to the first.
00:42:46You just can't catch him.
00:42:50You just can't catch him.
00:42:55And Leicester left looking on, as Arsenal double their lead.
00:42:59Oh, no!
00:43:00No, no!
00:43:01No!
00:43:03On the way by Adams.
00:43:09Sinclair.
00:43:11Three ahead of Bergkamp.
00:43:13And the three ahead of Bergkamp
00:43:17And Ray Parler
00:43:20Across Keller
00:43:22It's three and Leicester completely lost track of him
00:43:27They all went to Bergkamp
00:43:30And look at the space for Parler
00:43:33That he exploited perfectly
00:43:35Fiera
00:43:41Very much now a match to be conducted
00:43:45You feel at the tempo that Arsenal choose
00:43:49They've quickened the play here
00:43:51And Anelka's in the middle
00:43:52It's over Mars who puts it in for Anelka
00:43:55To score a hat-trick for Arsenal
00:43:57All in the first half here
00:44:00Against the team from Filbert Street
00:44:024-0
00:44:03Martin O'Neill and John Robertson
00:44:07Well, just waiting for this one to end
00:44:10Over Mars
00:44:15Parler's on a burst and
00:44:20Leicester distracted a bit by Anelka as well
00:44:23Parler scores!
00:44:24So two for him
00:44:26And five now for Arsenal
00:44:28And you wonder how many
00:44:39It's going to end up here
00:44:41As Leicester are put to the sword
00:44:44As Leicester are put to the sword
00:44:45As Leicester are put to the sword
00:44:47On that day you realise really how big the club is
00:45:09And it was marvellous
00:45:12Enjoyable but as well
00:45:14Frightening but somewhere
00:45:16Even when things are very high
00:45:19You feel how sad these people can be
00:45:23When it doesn't go well
00:45:24It's a fantastic feeling
00:45:26And it's surprising really
00:45:28Because you see all them fans
00:45:29And you think
00:45:30Wow, where are all these fans coming from?
00:45:32You know, they're on the rooftops
00:45:33They're hanging out of windows
00:45:34You know, doing all sorts
00:45:35But it's a great time
00:45:37It's a celebration time
00:45:38I've never seen so many people in all my life
00:45:40It was unbelievable
00:45:41It's a shame those sort of moments
00:45:43Can't last forever if you like
00:45:45When we're on top of the stage
00:45:47Seeing all the supporters there
00:45:48It was certainly one of the highlights of my career
00:45:50French midfield general Patrick Vieira
00:46:10Has fast become a Highbury favourite
00:46:12Arsene Wenger explains
00:46:13What makes him a cut above the rest
00:46:15What makes him a special midfielder
00:46:19Is I believe first his intelligence
00:46:21And his winning desire
00:46:23And his very competitive
00:46:25And his strength
00:46:27His ability to use well the ball
00:46:32And I believe he can combine aggression with technique
00:46:36When I first arrived here
00:46:40The fans were singing for Patrick
00:46:42Or they were clapping all the time
00:46:43When Patrick asked to get the ball back
00:46:45Or whatever
00:46:46It was for me just unbelievable
00:46:49I used to call him you know
00:46:50Le Patron
00:46:51Seems the boss in France
00:46:53So for me he's the boss
00:46:55He's really the boss in the team
00:46:57Oh and Patrick Vieira
00:47:01Sorts it out for Arsenal
00:47:02I like the game he played against West Ham
00:47:07Because he was in
00:47:09Under specialist circumstances
00:47:11And he has done there
00:47:12Under a lot of pressure
00:47:13And a lot of scrutiny
00:47:15Of what was expected of him
00:47:17That means
00:47:17Great behaviour
00:47:19And as well a great game
00:47:20I think he's
00:47:22He's going to be
00:47:23The best infield player in the world
00:47:25If he's not nearly there now
00:47:27You know
00:47:27He's got everything you know
00:47:29I can't see a weakness in his game
00:47:31So finally the free kick can be taken
00:47:57And it's teed up for Cole
00:48:01Oh he's scored
00:48:02A terrific moment for the teenager
00:48:07Given the accolade of playing a part in Arsenal's set pieces
00:48:15And his teammates are thrilled
00:48:18With him and for him
00:48:20Saw the gap
00:48:23And found it
00:48:25And it's Arsenal 1
00:48:27Manchester City 0
00:48:28Away by Xavi
00:48:36And as far as Freddie Jungberg
00:48:39For Bergkamp
00:48:42Got to be taken first time
00:48:44And Bergkamp puts it away
00:48:46Nicely set up by
00:48:53The change of direction from Jungberg
00:48:56And Dennis Bergkamp
00:49:05Back on the score sheet
00:49:07Fiera
00:49:11Bergkamp
00:49:13Henry
00:49:14A wonderful running by Wiltor
00:49:18And Manchester City simply couldn't cope with the pace
00:49:24And movement from Arsenal here
00:49:26Sylvain Wiltor
00:49:293-0
00:49:30Jungberg
00:49:35Pryor trying to keep Wiltor out of harm's way
00:49:43This is tough going for the ten men
00:49:47Wiltor's cross
00:49:49Henry
00:49:50He had time to take a touch
00:50:09And as is so often the case with Thierry Henry
00:50:15The finishing
00:50:17Deadly
00:50:18Kennedy's cross
00:50:26And Arsenal
00:50:30Not satisfied yet
00:50:33Henry looks offside
00:50:37But the flag has stayed down
00:50:39His second
00:50:41And five for Arsenal
00:50:44And Henry
00:50:51He didn't wait for a whistle
00:50:53It never came
00:50:54And he scored
00:50:55He scored
00:50:56He scored
00:50:57He scored
00:50:57He scored
00:50:58He scored
00:50:59This year the Champions League came to Highbury for the first time
00:51:02Well basically we're babies in Europe really we showed that in the first two years of the competition
00:51:10We certainly lacked a lot of experience there was lots of senior players really playing in that competition for the first time
00:51:15I think the first thing which was very important for us was the first game we played was an away win that was crucial I think because then you know you have two home games coming and when you can get six points out of them you're qualified
00:51:31We've grown as a team since then
00:51:38Learned from our experiences
00:51:41I think the Wembley factor had a lot to you know a big part to play in the fact that we didn't do very well at home
00:51:49And then as you can see from this season it's totally changed you know the atmosphere at Highbury is fantastic
00:51:55You know that the fans really get behind you although there's less fans there but it feels like there's more
00:52:00We lost before against in the big tests at home like Barcelona like Fiorentina and
00:52:08This year to play it like you at Highbury was a very big test
00:52:15Bergkamp arms raised
00:52:17Bergkamp
00:52:18Jungberg great goal
00:52:20I got a header back from Dennis and
00:52:23It's bouncing just before it's pretty wet so I got it to my foot and just goes
00:52:28I don't know just behind underneath the bar. I think I was a little nervous. They was
00:52:34On his way over the bar, but they stayed underneath so I was really nice
00:52:40Perkamp able to turn Lazio slow to close him down and you're back in again
00:52:46However, there was then the small matcher facing Lazio in Rome
00:52:57Obviously Lazio and well fancied to win the competition. They may still do that
00:53:02So we certainly weren't expected to get a result there, but we felt we could we could do it there
00:53:07They scored a very very fortunate goal. I think we've got our just deserves in the end
00:53:13Oh, and it's Wilto battling back and
00:53:17Well, he sent a tremendous ball forward and this is Perez on the break Robert Perez
00:53:23He never looked like missing it
00:53:25We knew we'd got a point which was another step and then when we got in the dressing room they said that that the result had gone for us
00:53:38Arsenal secured group winner status romping to victory at home to Prague
00:53:48They even managed to use two kits on the night
00:53:50Lovely work by all right still Thierry already can who's in the middle
00:54:06We're in the second group stage now it will be much more difficult, but it will be another big test for us
00:54:20Arsenal's Nigerian Superstar Kanu is a player who's proved an enigma to opposition defenses
00:54:35Whilst enthralling the highbury faithful with his mesmerizing skills, but what's he like to play with?
00:54:43He's unbelievable a phenomenon really when you see him playing you know
00:54:48He does stuff on the training pitch will will try things on the training pitch and sometimes they come off him
00:54:54But it's when you try them on the pit on there on the football picture with
00:54:5838,000 people there and he just does them again and again and again
00:55:02I think he's a big big favorite with the crowd and certainly big favor with the players
00:55:06On this day
00:55:08He surprises everybody
00:55:10The partners the opponents and he can do the special thing and I I think one
00:55:16quality that nobody
00:55:19Outlines a lot for Kanu is he's very brave
00:55:23You can play away with him. He can be kicked from everywhere you can he's not scared
00:55:28Just keeps the ball in his feet and says let's come and take the ball
00:55:31I like to see him around in the six-yard box when he's got an open goal and he's just about put it in and decides to beat another couple of
00:55:37Players before he does it I think the crowd sort of look that as well
00:55:49His best goal was probably
00:55:51The one Deportivo you know where he he went he fainted and the keeper dived and he just just rolled it in so he is a special player and
00:55:59Canu might be in here
00:56:03Only Kanu could do it like that
00:56:12Bewitched bothered and bewildered Songo in the Deportivo goal
00:56:16I would keep maybe the Tottenham goal
00:56:19When you chip the ball over that's typically Kanu he surprises everybody and he scores
00:56:30Absolutely brilliant Kanu
00:56:34I wouldn't like to play against him thankfully he's on my team
00:56:36He must be a nightmare to play against because he just I don't think he knows what he's doing half the time
00:56:41Which is a nightmare for a defender to mark him
00:56:44Kanu
00:56:46Oh the country has got his wand out again
00:56:49The club thought they were saying a bit of a gamble but he's really paid that off now you know and
00:56:53I'm sure a lot of teams in Europe top teams would like him in their side
00:56:57Bergkamp
00:56:59Kanu
00:57:00Fiera
00:57:01And Kanu touches it over the line
00:57:08That nearly wraps it up but finally here's our pick of the top 10 goals from the last three seasons
00:57:16And it comes out here for Fiera
00:57:23Adam's causing a nuisance at the near post parlour's corner
00:57:27And it comes out here for Fiera
00:57:30It simply flew past Schmeichel
00:57:47Adams put through by bold
00:57:49That sums it all up
00:58:02Sealed here by the skipper
00:58:03He slammed it into the top of the Chelsea net
00:58:15A golden nugget of a goal from Nigel Winterberg
00:58:19Nigel Winterberg doesn't score so often
00:58:27But when he scores goals he was always stunning goals and that was really one of them
00:58:32Of them
00:58:37Henry
00:58:41Oh it's still Henry
00:58:42That's a truly tremendous goal from the Frenchman
00:58:50And nothing Watford could do
00:58:52Could stop Thierry Henry tucking it away
00:59:03Kanu
00:59:06Now Parler
00:59:09It's in
00:59:10Ray Parler
00:59:11I just thought I'll have a go and the ball does go a bit
00:59:17Once I hit it and it coming off the post
