00:00:30He is a manipulative, sly, unfeeling monster.

00:00:35You might even come face to face with a man who has murdered children.

00:00:39Because of Huntley's fame and notoriety, other prisoners were jealous of that.

00:00:44As an inmate in here, you'll need to watch your back.

00:00:48You were literally an extreme dying group being seriously assaulted.

00:00:51As this is a prison that challenges everyone.

00:00:54Basically designed to break you.

00:00:57In every way possible.

00:00:59And it can kick off at any moment.

00:01:01The alarms were going off. The screws were running on the wing.

00:01:04It was just going off for about half an hour.

00:01:08This is the inside story.

00:01:10There is a kind of black market in sort of relationships, if you like.

00:01:16From those who are incarcerated here.

00:01:19There's a lot of a Rex Army.

00:01:21And they're used to a tear-up. They like a tear-up.

00:01:24Those who work here.

00:01:26He could have killed me that day.

00:01:27And he just would not have cared.

00:01:29And those who know the truth.

00:01:32If you're going to harm somebody that a lot of people are close to,

00:01:36people are going to get the arm.

00:01:37Welcome to the place some people call hell.

00:01:41This is HMP Franklin.

00:01:54In the beautiful countryside of County Durham,

00:01:58lies a high-security prison.

00:02:02HMP Franklin.

00:02:09So this is Franklin Prison, where I was when I was 21-year-old.

00:02:13This is where you come down in the wagon.

00:02:16And you go in through the big gates into reception.

00:02:20Don't know if it's still got it as you go in.

00:02:22It's got engraved welcome to hell.

00:02:25Built in 1983, Franklin's been expanded three times.

00:02:29And now its sprawling wings house 840 prisoners.

00:02:36For your view, on a typical cell, it's just a big metal fence.

00:02:41There's no greenery or anything inside.

00:02:43Everything's just grey, dark and miserable.

00:02:47Nobody has ever escaped from Franklin.

00:02:50It's Category A, the highest security rating.

00:02:59If you went over that wall, there would be a big gap in between,

00:03:04and then you've got the big metal fences,

00:03:06and then you've got the bottom wire.

00:03:09If you get over the fence, then you've got the wall,

00:03:11which is never going to happen.

00:03:14It's all fences and gates.

00:03:15It takes a while to get from the main gate

00:03:18to the top wings where I worked.

00:03:23Franklin's newer wings are built in a distinctive L-shape,

00:03:27allowing guards to keep a better eye on the prisoners.

00:03:32Because there's two spurs on the wing,

00:03:34and, like, they've got their office in the middle,

00:03:36there's a big metal gate so you can lock it

00:03:39so you can't get onto the other spur.

00:03:41On each spur of the wing

00:03:43arose of 40 to 60 single occupancy cells.

00:03:47Prisoners are locked inside these at night

00:03:49and at certain times each day.

00:03:52This is not a joke.

00:03:54This is a very severe, secure environment.

00:03:59It's closed in.

00:04:02There's nowhere to go apart from the jungle

00:04:05that you are in, surrounded by, mostly, a bunch of killers.

00:04:16Behind the high walls here,

00:04:18there are some of Britain's most notorious criminals.

00:04:21Some of the people that are inside of here,

00:04:23I mean, like, you've had the likes of the Yorkshire Ripper,

00:04:26was in here.

00:04:27He's just died recently from here.

00:04:28He had COVID.

00:04:30Got Ian Huntley.

00:04:31You've got the worst of the worst behind them walls.

00:04:33There are some really sick, horrible men in there.

00:04:36Delroy Grant, the night stalker rapist.

00:04:40Levi Belfield, killer of Millie Dowler,

00:04:43the only man in Britain to have two whole-life terms.

00:04:47Michael Adebellarjo, the killer of Lee Rigby.

00:04:50It's home to Wayne Cousins,

00:04:52the killer, police killer of Sarah Everard.

00:04:55People who you just know are just pure evil.

00:04:59If they've been notorious in what you deem as notorious

00:05:02in the last 20 years, then I would have met them.

00:05:06Murder, robbery, violence, drug dealing, fraudsters,

00:05:12burglars, aggravated burglars, robbers, murderers,

00:05:16gangland figures.

00:05:17You know, you say the wrong thing to the wrong person

00:05:19on the wrong day,

00:05:20you could end up with a pencil stuck in your eye

00:05:22or, you know, a six-inch nail stabbed into your throat.

00:05:24I don't think anyone was prepared mentally

00:05:28for the difficulties they might confront

00:05:32dealing with so many highly dangerous men.

00:05:47If you've got a serious enough sentence

00:05:49to be sent to Franklin,

00:05:51your first day will be full-on,

00:05:53beginning with a rude awakening.

00:05:57Door opened.

00:05:59Bang!

00:06:00Right.

00:06:01I mean, you're on the move.

00:06:03Huh?

00:06:04On the move?

00:06:05Well, you're going on a long trip now.

00:06:10You're then locked into a Category A van.

00:06:13If you're high-risk or exceptional,

00:06:15you'll have police outriders

00:06:17or you'll have a helicopter,

00:06:18which will follow you all the way to your next prison.

00:06:22The sweatbox is like that.

00:06:24It's in little cubicles.

00:06:26Your only clue on where you're going

00:06:27is trying to get a glance at road signs

00:06:29and where you're heading.

00:06:32You'll be handcuffed from the van

00:06:35to the reception area.

00:06:38First thing on arrival,

00:06:39you're just thinking, like,

00:06:41who the fuck are these?

00:06:42You know what I mean?

00:06:43Like...

00:06:45They'll be strip searched

00:06:46to make sure that they've brought

00:06:47no contraband from the previous jail.

00:06:50Totally high security.

00:06:52Seeing the screws standing all over

00:06:54with the dogs,

00:06:54got the guard dogs and that.

00:06:57Everyone's out on the wings,

00:06:58like, looking at you

00:06:59to see who's coming,

00:07:00the fresh people coming in on the wing.

00:07:01People will be curious about who you are.

00:07:04They will be particularly curious

00:07:06about what you're in prison for.

00:07:08You'll be given a bed pack

00:07:10for your bedding,

00:07:12towel and all that.

00:07:13You get your vape or your own vape.

00:07:15And you're banged up behind the door.

00:07:20As you come through the door,

00:07:22put your hope aside, mate,

00:07:23because anything you're hoping for

00:07:24is not going to bleed and happen.

00:07:27But before you get settled,

00:07:30there's something you should know

00:07:31about Franklin's screws.

00:07:34They just can't open themselves.

00:07:36And it's in their culture.

00:07:38I guess they had to fight in them.

00:07:39So I don't know who was on it

00:07:40as much as we were.

00:07:41So it was going off quite frequently.

00:07:55You've only just arrived

00:07:57at HMP Franklin,

00:07:59a Category A prison

00:08:00in County Durham.

00:08:02And already,

00:08:03other prisoners will be warning you

00:08:05about some of the screws here.

00:08:08When I worked at Franklin,

00:08:09there was quite a lot of ex-military there.

00:08:10There was ex-pit workers.

00:08:13This group of local hard guys

00:08:16are some of the most feared POs

00:08:18in the prison system.

00:08:20They thought,

00:08:21we want something tough and northern,

00:08:23so we'll put it in Durham.

00:08:25When I was here in the 90s,

00:08:27a lot of them were ex-army.

00:08:29And they used to tear up.

00:08:30They liked to tear up.

00:08:31They still had to fight in them.

00:08:33And so I knew they were on it

00:08:34as much as we were.

00:08:35So it was going off quite frequently.

00:08:37I've experienced it

00:08:38and I've seen

00:08:39and they deal with people sometimes.

00:08:41They just can't help themselves.

00:08:43And it's in their culture.

00:08:45Franklin employs over 700 people,

00:08:47including prison officers.

00:08:49And not all of them

00:08:50have the same attitude to the job.

00:08:52There's staff in there

00:08:53who put on the uniform

00:08:54and feel like

00:08:56there have to be this aggressive

00:08:58kind of say,

00:08:59I'm in charge

00:09:00because I'm wearing this uniform.

00:09:01And that makes your life really hard.

00:09:04If you're a firm but fair prison officer

00:09:05who understand the environment

00:09:09you're working in,

00:09:10it could make your life difficult.

00:09:12Prison regimes in the north

00:09:13and the attitude of prison officers

00:09:15in the north

00:09:16was far more reactionary

00:09:19and anti-prisoner

00:09:21than it was in the south.

00:09:22It's got a reputation

00:09:23for being run

00:09:24by what people call

00:09:25the Geordie Mafia.

00:09:26Being big on steroids,

00:09:28big on violence.

00:09:29They don't like southerners.

00:09:31If you're a prisoner of colour

00:09:33arriving at Franklin Prison

00:09:34in the 80s, 90s

00:09:36and early 2000s,

00:09:37former inmates claim

00:09:39that there were rumours

00:09:40that would make you

00:09:41especially nervous.

00:09:43So Franklin itself

00:09:45has the reputation

00:09:48of those staff up there

00:09:50being worse

00:09:52than the rest

00:09:54by way of

00:09:55not liking anything else

00:09:57but the colour of white.

00:10:00If you were a London prisoner

00:10:02arriving in Franklin,

00:10:03the hostility you faced

00:10:05from staff was quite bad anyway.

00:10:07But if you were Blackham from London,

00:10:09then you were literally

00:10:10in extreme danger

00:10:11of being seriously assaulted.

00:10:13Franklin gets that reputation

00:10:14for being a racist jail

00:10:16just because we don't have

00:10:17a lot of diversity among staff.

00:10:20But that's just the region

00:10:21we work in.

00:10:22I can't sit and say that

00:10:23there isn't a problem

00:10:25with racism in the prison service.

00:10:26I suppose that ignorance

00:10:27goes on all walks of life.

00:10:29What I can say is

00:10:29from 2006 to 2010,

00:10:31I never witnessed that

00:10:33at Franklin.

00:10:36A recent report on Franklin

00:10:38didn't make any direct reference

00:10:40to racism.

00:10:41The chief inspector of prison said

00:10:43the promotion of equality

00:10:44and diversity

00:10:45needed improvement

00:10:47and required greater prioritisation.

00:10:53And it's not just the screws

00:10:55who are allegedly hostile.

00:10:57You've got the local criminals

00:10:59to worry about too.

00:11:02So the young guys

00:11:03wasn't used to interacting

00:11:05with a lot of Black people.

00:11:07You get into arguments

00:11:08with them and all that,

00:11:09they're quick to bring colour

00:11:10into it or something stupid

00:11:11because they never really

00:11:13know no better.

00:11:14They're all kind of

00:11:15shaved heads,

00:11:17bodybuilders.

00:11:18There is a type

00:11:19of Franklin prisoner.

00:11:20I would not be telling the truth

00:11:22if I didn't say

00:11:22that Franklin is

00:11:24to some extent

00:11:25and always has been

00:11:26since it was envisaged

00:11:27a powder keg.

00:11:30New prisoner Ricky

00:11:32quickly discovered

00:11:33being from the northeast

00:11:35was an advantage.

00:11:36These were the most

00:11:37powerful groups

00:11:38of Franklin.

00:11:40Obviously you've got

00:11:41the Maccams,

00:11:42which is the Sunderland lads,

00:11:44and you've got

00:11:44the Geordies,

00:11:45who's from Newcastle.

00:11:47Yeah, and you had

00:11:47quite a few

00:11:48Middlesbrough lads.

00:11:51Durham boy Ricky

00:11:52grew up with Franklin

00:11:53on his doorstep.

00:11:55On me way down there,

00:11:57and coming down

00:11:57that road there,

00:11:59driving through the gates,

00:12:01I had a bit of a,

00:12:03like an excitement

00:12:04about us,

00:12:04like just waiting

00:12:06to see what actually

00:12:07is behind them walls,

00:12:08you know.

00:12:08I was like,

00:12:09I wasn't scared.

00:12:10I was like looking forward

00:12:12to being in there

00:12:12to be honest.

00:12:16In 2007,

00:12:17two local guys

00:12:18around the same age

00:12:20found themselves

00:12:21arriving at Franklin.

00:12:22One was a prisoner,

00:12:24the other was a screw.

00:12:26Ricky and Craig both

00:12:27grew up in County Durham

00:12:28in the 90s,

00:12:29hanging out in similar

00:12:30places and attending

00:12:32similar schools,

00:12:33but they were going

00:12:34to end up on very

00:12:35different sides

00:12:36in Franklin.

00:12:38I'd previously

00:12:39been in the military

00:12:40before I joined

00:12:41the prison service,

00:12:41so for me it was

00:12:42a natural progression

00:12:43going from one

00:12:44uniform job

00:12:44into another

00:12:45uniform job.

00:12:47People were quite

00:12:48surprised when I

00:12:49said I wanted to go

00:12:49there because of

00:12:50what they heard

00:12:51about the place.

00:12:53Ricky had slashed

00:12:54a man with a machete.

00:12:56He was sent to

00:12:57Franklin for GBH

00:12:58with intent.

00:13:00The mindset that I was

00:13:01in, I was in a sick

00:13:04way enjoying it.

00:13:06Craig had family

00:13:07inspiration for joining

00:13:09Franklin's screws.

00:13:10My dad had been in

00:13:11the prison service

00:13:12for 30 years,

00:13:13me mama was in

00:13:13the prison service,

00:13:14me sister was in

00:13:15the prison service.

00:13:16And Ricky had a

00:13:17family history that

00:13:18set him on the path

00:13:19to being banged up

00:13:21here.

00:13:23My dad had spent

00:13:24a lot of years in

00:13:25jail.

00:13:27Before I was born,

00:13:28he'd spent about

00:13:2814 years in prison.

00:13:30And they used to

00:13:32tell me prison stories

00:13:33and stuff when I was

00:13:34a kid.

00:13:35And from a young age,

00:13:3678 year old,

00:13:38like, I always wanted

00:13:39to go to prison.

00:13:40I never really had

00:13:41any role models,

00:13:42like, good role

00:13:43models growing up.

00:13:44I always looked up

00:13:45there, gangsters

00:13:46and stuff like that,

00:13:47and obviously getting

00:13:48in there and being

00:13:50surrounded by them.

00:13:51I was, like,

00:13:52loving it, really.

00:13:57When his cell door

00:13:59slammed behind him,

00:14:00the young Ricky was

00:14:01in a strange frame

00:14:02of mind for a man

00:14:04who had just lost

00:14:05his freedom.

00:14:08say on the first night

00:14:09when I was in my pad

00:14:12by my cell,

00:14:13I was looking out

00:14:13at the window

00:14:14and I had my music on

00:14:15because obviously the

00:14:16lads could give us

00:14:16a hi-fi and that.

00:14:18And I was listening

00:14:18to some sort of

00:14:19dance music

00:14:20and I was just, like,

00:14:21looking out onto the yard,

00:14:22looking up at the metal

00:14:23fence and that,

00:14:24and I was just, like,

00:14:25bopping away to the music

00:14:26and just thinking,

00:14:27of Meritor.

00:14:30There was some elements

00:14:31in the prison service

00:14:32that reflected the army

00:14:33because there was a lot

00:14:33of ex-military still

00:14:34in the prison service

00:14:35at that time.

00:14:36So it was nice still

00:14:38having that sort of

00:14:39regimental aspect of it,

00:14:41just taking pride

00:14:42in your uniform,

00:14:43making sure you're

00:14:44presentable,

00:14:45everything ran on a time

00:14:46in the prison service

00:14:46just like it did

00:14:47in the military.

00:14:48So, yeah,

00:14:49it was a nice continuity.

00:14:54But while Ricky was

00:14:55excited to arrive

00:14:56in Franklin,

00:14:58this prison was about

00:14:59to wipe the smile

00:15:00off his face.

00:15:02Well, the second day

00:15:03that I was in Franklin,

00:15:04I went out in the kitchen

00:15:07with one of my pals.

00:15:09He said he was going

00:15:10to cook us a steak.

00:15:11That was a bit

00:15:11of a welcome meal.

00:15:13Prisoners in Franklin

00:15:14can buy ingredients

00:15:16and cook their own meals

00:15:17if they want to avoid

00:15:19prison slop.

00:15:21We're seasoning up

00:15:21the steak,

00:15:23and there was a couple

00:15:24of lads in the kitchen.

00:15:26And one of them

00:15:27was starting

00:15:27and washing his dishes.

00:15:28Well, I was looking over

00:15:29and I'd just seen

00:15:30this pan of hot oil

00:15:31bubbling away.

00:15:32And I looked at it

00:15:33and I thought,

00:15:33I wonder what's going

00:15:34on there,

00:15:35because it just seemed

00:15:35a bit out of place,

00:15:36a big pan of hot oil

00:15:37bubbling away.

00:15:39And some lad came in,

00:15:40picked it up,

00:15:42tipped it over

00:15:42the back of his head.

00:15:43Burnt him bad.

00:15:45It burnt him bad.

00:15:48You know what,

00:15:48it's not a nice sight,

00:15:50it's the worstest thing

00:15:51you can do to someone.

00:15:54It was only his second day

00:15:56in Franklin,

00:15:57and new prisoner Ricky

00:15:58had already witnessed

00:16:00an inmate being attacked

00:16:01with boiling oil.

00:16:03This inmate turned out

00:16:04to be one of the jail's

00:16:05most notorious residents.

00:16:09Prisoners that got their hot oil

00:16:10tipped on him

00:16:11was Deren Barrett,

00:16:13and he was the head

00:16:14of Al-Qaeda in the UK.

00:16:17Deren Barrett

00:16:18is a high-profile terrorist,

00:16:20thought to be senior

00:16:21in Al-Qaeda.

00:16:23He plotted to slaughter

00:16:24thousands of civilians

00:16:25in the UK and US,

00:16:28and details of his

00:16:29narrowly thwarted plans

00:16:30horrified the public.

00:16:33He travelled to the United States

00:16:35and started picking targets,

00:16:37major targets,

00:16:38for terrorist attacks.

00:16:40The World Bank,

00:16:41the International Monetary Fund,

00:16:43New York Stock Exchange,

00:16:44Citigroup,

00:16:45and he was planning

00:16:46to use dirty bombs

00:16:49to destroy

00:16:50each of these targets.

00:16:51He also simultaneously

00:16:53was planning an attack

00:16:54on the London Underground,

00:16:56which he was going to flood,

00:16:58hoping to kill

00:16:58many thousands of people.

00:17:01Caught and found guilty

00:17:03in 2006,

00:17:05Barrett was sentenced

00:17:06to life imprisonment

00:17:08with a minimum term

00:17:09of 40 years.

00:17:11Barrett is sent to Franklin

00:17:14after his conviction

00:17:15and is put in among

00:17:16the ordinary prison population.

00:17:18He was an extremely dangerous man,

00:17:20softly spoken,

00:17:23surprisingly intelligent,

00:17:26and utterly deadly.

00:17:28If you're guilty of terrorist offences,

00:17:31the authorities need Category A security

00:17:34to keep you under lock and key,

00:17:36making this prison

00:17:38an ideal choice.

00:17:39One of the things that Franklin

00:17:41has got

00:17:43is a lot of terrorists,

00:17:45at least 25 at any one time.

00:17:48In March 2022,

00:17:51there were 159 terrorists

00:17:52in prison

00:17:53classed

00:17:54as Islamist extremists,

00:17:56and 57

00:17:57categorised

00:17:58as extreme right-wing.

00:18:00Many of the most infamous

00:18:01and deadly

00:18:02are housed

00:18:02at Franklin.

00:18:03The prison is home

00:18:05to

00:18:06Michael

00:18:07Adabalajo,

00:18:08the killer of Lee Rigby,

00:18:09with a machete

00:18:10in the car.

00:18:11Hashim Abedi,

00:18:13who helped to plan

00:18:14the Manchester Arena bombing

00:18:15in 2017.

00:18:17Franklin also includes

00:18:18the murderer of Joe Cox,

00:18:20the MP,

00:18:21Thomas Mayer.

00:18:26Craig remembers

00:18:27dealing with notorious terrorists

00:18:29as part of his job

00:18:31at Franklin.

00:18:33When they started coming in

00:18:34in 2005,

00:18:376, 7, 8,

00:18:38they were kind of

00:18:40well-known individual terrorists

00:18:43or terrorists

00:18:44who you'd heard of

00:18:46for weeks and months

00:18:46on the news

00:18:47and then they were

00:18:48stood in front of you.

00:18:51So it was quite

00:18:52an interesting time

00:18:53and

00:18:54seeing how the prisoners

00:18:55were going to deal

00:18:56with that.

00:18:57Franklin is a microcosm

00:18:58of society

00:19:00and

00:19:01society in Britain

00:19:02changed

00:19:02as a result

00:19:03of the 7-7 bombings

00:19:05in 2005.

00:19:06If anyone

00:19:07now doubted

00:19:07what we were seeing

00:19:08was a coordinated

00:19:09series of terror attacks,

00:19:11confirmation came

00:19:12just 10 minutes later.

00:19:14A number 10 bus

00:19:15passing through

00:19:16Tavistock Square

00:19:17was torn apart

00:19:18by a bomb

00:19:19placed near the back

00:19:20on the upper deck.

00:19:21It was full of people

00:19:23recently evacuated

00:19:24from Russell Square

00:19:25tube station.

00:19:26We became more suspicious,

00:19:28more frightened.

00:19:31Yes, we'd had terrorists

00:19:32before,

00:19:33but not like this,

00:19:34not in quite the same way.

00:19:37At Franklin,

00:19:38in the mid to late

00:19:392000s,

00:19:40attitudes towards

00:19:41prisoners

00:19:41in for terrorism

00:19:42were becoming

00:19:43increasingly hostile.

00:19:46A lot of people

00:19:48obviously don't like

00:19:49what they're in for,

00:19:50so then they do

00:19:51become a target.

00:19:55The attack on Barrett

00:19:56rocked the jail.

00:19:58New prisoner Ricky

00:19:59could sense

00:20:00that things were

00:20:01about to escalate.

00:20:03And about two weeks

00:20:04after,

00:20:04another terrorist

00:20:05that was left

00:20:06on the wing

00:20:06by himself,

00:20:08obviously he was

00:20:09probably feeling

00:20:10vulnerable thinking

00:20:11that he was going

00:20:11to get attacked.

00:20:13So he's walked up

00:20:14to one of the Geordie lads

00:20:15that was just sitting

00:20:16there eating his tea

00:20:17and went up behind him

00:20:18and just went like that

00:20:19and tipped the pan

00:20:19over his head,

00:20:20but this went over

00:20:21his full head

00:20:22all down his face

00:20:23and his head

00:20:24just blew up

00:20:25like a watermelon.

00:20:28And this fresh attack

00:20:30wasn't to be

00:20:31the last of the

00:20:31so-called

00:20:33juggins

00:20:33at Franklin.

00:20:38Just seemed to be

00:20:39popular among

00:20:39these prisoners

00:20:40to throw hot oil

00:20:40over themselves.

00:20:42It kind of became

00:20:43the go-to assault.

00:20:45Originally,

00:20:45you know,

00:20:45in the old days

00:20:46it was made

00:20:46full of sex offenders.

00:20:48For somebody

00:20:48to do it

00:20:49has to be serious

00:20:50or has to be a hit.

00:20:54Prison officer Craig

00:20:55got used to dealing

00:20:56with scalded prisoners

00:20:57who had skin

00:20:58flaking off

00:20:59from attacks

00:21:00with boiling oil

00:21:01or water.

00:21:02There was one

00:21:03prisoner that

00:21:04I saw it

00:21:05who was actually

00:21:05worse than

00:21:06what I previously

00:21:07thought.

00:21:07We just put him

00:21:08in a cold shower

00:21:09and his back,

00:21:10his chest,

00:21:11his face,

00:21:11his head

00:21:12was all

00:21:13really badly

00:21:14burned.

00:21:15I think that

00:21:16might have been

00:21:16actually the last

00:21:17incident.

00:21:18I think then

00:21:18after that

00:21:19they did start

00:21:20panning oil

00:21:20in the prisons.

00:21:22But the chain

00:21:23of events

00:21:24set off by the

00:21:24attack on

00:21:25Dyr and Barrett

00:21:26were only just

00:21:27getting started.

00:21:29Terrible thing

00:21:30to do to what

00:21:31I believe

00:21:32as a peaceful

00:21:33man as I know

00:21:34him, to be honest.

00:21:36If you're going

00:52:17what grinds you

00:52:18down at

00:52:18Franklin

00:52:20obviously when

00:52:21you're coming out

00:52:22talking with your

00:52:23friends on the

00:52:24wing and all that

00:52:24at the end of the

00:52:25day you're always

00:52:25going back behind

00:52:26your door by

00:52:27yourself

00:52:28and you're just

00:52:29stuck with your

00:52:29own thoughts

00:52:30stuck by yourself

00:52:31thinking about

00:52:32the outside world

00:52:32so it is a

00:52:34it is a lonely

00:52:36place prison

00:52:37women on the

00:52:38outside become

00:52:39a major obsession

00:52:40for Franklin's

00:52:41prisoners

00:52:42many cat-a prisoners

00:52:44are only entitled

00:52:45to three or four

00:52:46visits a month

00:52:47and the UK

00:52:48doesn't allow

00:52:49conjugal visits

00:52:50nonetheless

00:52:51some prisoners

00:52:53manage to hang on

00:52:53to relationships

00:53:37relationships

00:53:37with a geezer

00:53:39who gives you a bird

00:53:39who lives around

00:53:40who likes

00:53:41who likes to look

00:53:43at you

00:53:43because you sent

00:53:44one of your photos

00:53:45you know

00:53:45that's the kind

00:53:46of relationships

00:53:46peripheral

00:53:47and sad

00:53:49like sometimes

00:53:50you might have

00:53:50a friend

00:53:51who's a prisoner

00:53:52who's got

00:53:53a girlfriend

00:53:54and his girlfriend's

00:53:58and the next minute

00:55:14a lot of violent men

00:55:16get fan letters

00:55:16from women

00:55:18in fact

00:55:18there's actually

00:55:19a term for it

00:55:20it's called

00:55:21hybristophilia

00:55:23these are women

00:55:24who are aroused

00:55:26by violent

00:55:26or offensive acts

00:55:28other women

00:55:29who seek out

00:55:29prisoners

00:55:30have said

00:55:30they have

00:55:31different motivations

00:55:32including

00:55:33ironically

00:55:34feeling safe

00:55:35knowing that

00:55:36they can control

00:55:37the contact

00:55:37in a relationship

00:55:38and their partner

00:55:40can't hurt them

00:55:41because every day

00:55:42is in a high

00:55:43security environment

00:55:46you get women

00:55:46when you go down

00:55:47visits who have

00:55:48met them through

00:55:49kind of

00:55:50prisoner dating sites

00:55:52and they'll come in

00:55:53and sit and meet them

00:55:55and things like that

00:55:56it is

00:55:57quite surreal

00:55:58knowing that the crimes

00:55:59that they're in for

00:56:00and these women

00:56:01are still like

00:56:02well yes

00:56:03I want to be with you

00:56:05in May 2022

00:56:08reports came out

00:56:09that one of

00:56:09Franklin's

00:56:10most notorious prisoners

00:56:11had a new woman

00:56:13in his life

00:56:15well Belfield

00:56:16had all sorts

00:56:17of reasons

00:56:17to get back

00:56:19into the public eye

00:56:20at one point

00:56:21he confessed

00:56:22quotes

00:56:22to the Chittenden

00:56:23killings of

00:56:24Lynn and Megan Russell

00:56:25he didn't kill

00:56:27not his hand-mighting

00:56:30he also bragged
