00:00The Houston Texans are on the clock.
00:04Sports Radio 610 presents The Drive with Sterner and Qplay.
00:25All right, welcome back in as we are live here on The Drive.
00:31Coming up here in just a bit, Tyler had a night.
00:37It's been a while, guys.
00:39It's been a while since we've dealt with a Tyler late-night DoorDash order.
00:47It had been a while.
00:48It had been a while.
00:50Dirty water will send you there.
00:52Base power text line 713-5724-610, YouTube and Twitch.
00:58Where do you think Tyler went in the middle of the night in terms of his DoorDash order?
01:04We will have that breakdown for you coming up.
01:08In just a bit.
01:10But, Clint, we were talking about this yesterday.
01:15And I was kind of like Tyler in this thought process.
01:21It was not something that I had really entertained.
01:25I'm not as bad as Tyler believes.
01:27You don't pay running backs second contracts.
01:30You don't draft them in the first round.
01:32He's steadfast on that.
01:33He's got a belief in that.
01:34I think there are some exceptions to some of those rules.
01:41But we talked about this a bit.
01:43And I'm wondering from the people, 713-5724-610, YouTube and Twitch.
01:48Coach, your thoughts about the Texans drafting a running back in the first round?
01:53Is it something that you're open to or are you like Tyler?
01:56Like, hell no.
01:57Don't even do it.
01:58Now, when you look at – I did look at the needs, Clint.
02:02And most people have offensive line both on the outside and the inside as needs.
02:09And then also interior defensive line.
02:12Those seem to be the top two needs.
02:14Running back safety floating behind that.
02:19Your thoughts.
02:20Would you be open to the Texans and doing what they want to do
02:24and kind of seeing what kind of team they want to be offensively?
02:27Would you be open to them drafting a running back?
02:31In the first round specifically?
02:33100%.
02:33Yes.
02:35I mean, look, my only – I would not be opposed to an interior defensive lineman
02:39and that would tell me that they're just going to stock up on his defense
02:42and literally that offense just doesn't lose games.
02:46But offensively, I would prefer the aggressive moves that they make,
02:53which I would consider a first-round pick,
02:55maybe even moving up in the first round to get what you want.
03:01Paying money and free agency.
03:02Paying money and players in some kind of trade if need be.
03:06Like, I would be A-OK if every bit of that was part of the offseason plan
03:13and every bit of that was on the offensive side of the football
03:16this offseason for the Texans.
03:18Absolutely.
03:18It doesn't – if you go out there and you identify a running back
03:22as a guy that immediately changes this offense
03:26and he's available and within reach,
03:29I ain't got no problem with it.
03:30Absolutely not.
03:33Yeah, I – my only thing in this particular draft is I'm not sure if that –
03:39like, to me, if they could get Jeremiah Love –
03:43and I had never really thought about that until that kind of came up
03:46in the middle of our conversation yesterday.
03:48Yep.
03:48If they could get Jeremiah Love, hmm, that could make a lot of sense.
03:56Like, you could see that my deal is it feels like he is the only first round
04:02worthy running back right now.
04:04And he would – is kind of seen to be going into the top ten right now.
04:08And, you know, obviously I think they would have to really make moves
04:12that maybe go over and beyond maybe what you want to do to go get a running back.
04:20But he would make a lot of sense.
04:22And we've seen the last couple years there have been multiple running backs
04:25going to first round.
04:26I'm not certain if they will – that would happen this year.
04:29So, where they're drafting, I don't know if there will be a running back available.
04:32And maybe the next ones are second or third round guys.
04:35But Jeremiah Love, like, you could see him inserted into this offense
04:39and what they want to do.
04:40Then maybe you don't have to go out and spend money free agency-wise
04:44on a running back because I do think he could fit exactly what it is
04:47that they're potentially looking for.
04:49So, the only – my only reservation on this is just this draft of running backs
04:55just doesn't – there aren't, like, two or three of them right now
04:59that feel like – like, last year you had Gentile, you had Hampton,
05:02that both were guys that were, like, top 20 picks.
05:06And there's just – there just seems to be the one right now.
05:09So, identify the dudes that move the needle.
05:14That's all I hope.
05:15I think they have – from a roster-building perspective,
05:20obviously you've got to look at it a certain way.
05:22I would say that from a building depth and being better across the board
05:26has kind of been the approach for Nick Casario since he got here.
05:30And they've done a hell of a job.
05:32I just – I just believe this is a moment where you identify players,
05:37particularly on the offensive side of the football,
05:39that you believe immediately make you significantly better offensively.
05:46And you take that shot.
05:47And you're willing to use whatever draft capital,
05:50whatever cap pace you have.
05:53Like, take those shots, take those big swings,
05:58and take this offense to the next level.
06:00That's where I'm at.
06:01And if we're talking about the draft and Jordan Love is the guy,
06:04then so be it.
06:06If you can't get him, then move on to the next position
06:07because you've got plenty of needs.
06:09Most running backs can't run the ball well if the offensive line is not good.
06:12That should be their priority and free agency in the draft.
06:15No, the better running backs don't need the offensive line
06:19to be as great as others.
06:22It certainly helps.
06:23And, yes, they need to clean that up.
06:25But you can clearly see.
06:28Hell, you can see it over the last couple of years.
06:30You saw Joe Mixon, what he looked like,
06:33and then you saw Damian Pierce, and you saw other backs.
06:37Yeah, I mean, this conversation for me about the Texans this offseason
06:40isn't about, well, no running back can run if there's not a good –
06:43like, I think the Texans are at a spot where –
06:48like the running back.
06:49Like, you're good enough on the offensive line.
06:52Now, you've got to re-sign a couple of guys.
06:53I get it.
06:54I get the whole point.
06:55But you're good enough on the –
06:56you're good enough offensively to wear a back that can do more with less
07:01and a back that would allow Woody Marks to be more of a specialty back.
07:07That combination makes your team significantly better.
07:11I mean, forget about – yeah, everybody understands that if you go out
07:14and get the best guard and the best center on the free agent market
07:18and you draft another guard or another tackle
07:20and they work out like Ariante Urshry,
07:22yeah, obviously you're going to run the ball better.
07:24Your quarterback's going to be protected better.
07:26But those are – to me, those are long.
07:28One offensive lineman isn't going to all of a sudden make everybody a road greater.
07:32One offensive lineman all of a sudden isn't going to make Woody Marks all pro.
07:35Right?
07:35I mean, there's – the guy that can make more, you know, something out of nothing.
07:42Yes.
07:43The guys that can go out there and it's not blocked up perfect,
07:46but they have the vision or they have the twitch or they have the explosiveness
07:49or they have the physicality to go do something a little bit different,
07:53that immediately takes this offense to the next level.
07:57Yeah, I know that.
07:58You routinely see the best running backs in the league get –
08:04they do things with less.
08:06Small creases that – or not just small creases, but like vision that others don't see.
08:12Yeah.
08:12Where there's like –
08:13We don't – I mean, we – look, if you're a Texans fan
08:16and you can't look at what Joe Mixon did a year ago
08:18and then look at kind of what – just what the offense looked like,
08:21no disrespect to anybody.
08:22No, you can see it with Nick Chubb and Woody Marks.
08:26Yeah, yeah.
08:27I mean, if you can't see what we're talking about with Joe Mixon,
08:30a Joe Mixon type of back that can do those things
08:32and brings that vibe to the huddle, then I don't know if we're –
08:37I'm not sure that we're ever going to connect.
08:39Yep.
