Alaska State Troopers - Season 8 Episode 4 - Make Yourself Known
Transcript
00:00One mistake out here could be the difference between life or death.
00:25You have no idea what you're going to encounter.
00:30People come up here, and when they're on the run, he's through there, and we'll find him.
00:34The allure to Alaska is just how wild it can be.
00:37Stop, or you're going to get tasered!
00:42Stop!
00:43It's Alaska State Troopers, we're on our land.
00:47Oh, stop.
00:48You don't have a boring day as a State Trooper in Alaska.
00:51Gunfire, gunfire, over the ground, stop.
00:53State Troopers!
00:54Do not move!
00:55Let me see your hands!
00:56Hands down!
00:57Radio check.
00:59Relation to the device.
01:10Back up to 114.
01:12I have a failure to yield, Northbound Park's speed 77.
01:16Back up, copy, it's failed to yield.
01:1810.50 in the ditch here at Miller's Market.
01:21Still going in the ditch.
01:23He's now on the left side of the road.
01:2510.50 ditch from Miller's Market, left side of the road.
01:32Yeah, it's a black sedan, single-man occupant.
01:39Affirmative.
01:39Affirmative.
01:44I'm here again.
01:46Back up to I-14.
01:47We've gone down the first driveway on the right past Riverside Inn.
01:54Foot bale, foot bale, foot bale into the river.
01:58Foot bale into the river.
02:05I-6, WP-E-K-9 on.
02:09Negative.
02:11Back up to I-14.
02:13I don't have eyes on the suspect.
02:15No one else in the vehicle.
02:17I'm 10-12.
02:18Two other units arrived.
02:22Male had a full beard, bushy brown hair,
02:26and a, uh, like a wool pullover jacket.
02:32Yeah, this is going to be where the, uh,
02:33the vehicle ultimately stopped and the driver bailed out on foot.
02:37All right, I was having a hard time getting any of the radio traffic, so which way did he go from here?
02:43He exited the vehicle and ran that way toward the river's edge.
02:49Okay.
02:49Uh, kind of looked like he went towards the river, but when I ran over here, I didn't see him trying to cross or nothing.
02:54So my inclination was he continued along the edge here.
02:57He went that way for sure.
02:59Okay.
03:01I don't think he crossed that river.
03:04That's pretty deep.
03:05I'll go start exploring that way.
03:07Okay.
03:07Mack, I'm 22.
03:11This area just to the north of the footbale has quite a few outbuildings and vehicles that somebody could hide in.
03:20Hey, how's it going?
03:21What's going on?
03:22Do you have an ID on you by chance?
03:24I do.
03:25Okay.
03:26I think.
03:26Any weapons or anything?
03:27No, I don't have none of that.
03:30I'll just go along with this.
03:31There's like a lot of you guys here and you're like, I'm super freaked out.
03:37What was the description of the mail that ran?
03:39Full beard, pullover that was brown and desert came out looking.
03:4525's got a photo of a guy to show you.
03:482014 in front, that's the mail.
03:52Is it a warrant?
03:54Turn around.
03:55Let your hands behind your back.
03:56What?
03:57What?
03:58What's happening?
03:58Ouch.
03:59No, he's just literally with me over there.
04:01There's no...
04:01I'm not a guy.
04:02I swear on my leg, there's no chance.
04:04Yeah, so we sent a photo of this person to the trooper that initiated this whole pursuit and he confirmed through the photo that he thinks that's the guy.
04:12I'm just kind of waiting to figure out.
04:13Like right now, she's talking about another person that was here earlier today.
04:17So we're going to sort that out before we actually arrest him for this.
04:21Who's Mike?
04:21Mike, I take my life.
04:23Can you describe your ex to us?
04:24Looks just like a darker neck.
04:26They kind of look like twins, to be honest.
04:28Would he have warrants or anything?
04:30Probably, because he never goes to court.
04:32What was Michael driving?
04:33He was driving a black car.
04:35A black car?
04:36Maybe a Dodge Neon or something.
04:38Yeah.
04:38So the girl that's here with this guy that we have detained is telling us that she had another boyfriend that was here earlier today driving a similar car to what ran from us.
04:48She says that he looks pretty much the same as this guy.
04:51Holy smokes.
04:55You look very close.
04:57Yeah.
04:57You look very close.
04:58It wasn't me.
04:59I can guarantee that.
05:00Okay.
05:01All right.
05:01So it sounds like we have kind of ruled this gentleman out.
05:05This guy, not nearly as spry as the guy that jumped out of this car here.
05:09Unfortunately for him, he just looked very similar to our actual suspect.
05:12So apparently the dog showed some interest over here by a cabin.
05:16We're going to go start poking around over there.
05:30Stay troopers.
05:31If you're inside, make yourself known.
05:40I think we heard movement in there.
05:42I'm pretty sure that we've identified who he is.
06:13A Michael Pegg.
06:15He might be on foot in the area still.
06:17He's already got warrants.
06:18So if he gets contacted, he'll get arrested regardless of these charges.
06:21Either way.
06:21He wants to go serve an arrest warrant.
06:37The guy flipped the hell and is now being pursued by a PED on foot.
06:43He recently fled from troopers not too long ago.
06:46He's known to flee.
06:47The woods are extremely thick back here.
06:50We have no real trail.
06:53It's kind of a general sense of direction.
06:54It should be north, northeast.
06:56But he is clean shaven now.
06:58So they know.
06:59We have a canine coming from Palmer.
07:12We have Hilo 3 on their way.
07:15He's trying to set up a perimeter to where he's got to stay in this general vicinity for the
07:22canine track.
07:22There's someone hiding in the woods over there?
07:28Yeah, right.
07:29He just saw the bushes.
07:30He just saw the bushes.
07:31Yeah.
07:31Where is it?
07:32We're at exactly on the left?
07:34Maybe like 200 feet back.
07:36Michael!
07:37This is the last of state troopers!
07:39You have a warrant for your arrest!
07:42Come out with your hands up now!
07:44He said he was in the tree line right here.
07:48Just hiding, bunkered down, hiding in a bush.
07:52Person, person.
07:53Hey, he's right here.
07:54Further off in the woods on the other side.
07:56Hey, let me see your hands!
07:59Show me your hands!
08:02Michael!
08:02This is the last of state troopers!
08:05Come out with your hands up now!
08:07Talk to me now!
08:08NCIC 46, canine track starting.
08:20It's horrible terrain.
08:22I mean, it's up and down hills.
08:23The ground is soft and, like, coming up halfway up our calves and muck.
08:29The tree line is so thick and there's so much spoilage on the ground that you can't get a good track.
08:33So, there's a hot spot underneath the power line.
08:40So, the helo is above us using thermal.
08:42They were able to see a heat signature right underneath the power line trail.
08:47Very close to the hot spot.
08:52Police canine, you're in the woods.
08:53Pick me now, you may be bit!

09:25Tomorrow will be a new day, so we'll worry about that then.
09:29Careful with the ruts, I don't want you to trip.
09:31What'd you guys come out of this for anyway?
09:33You got warrants, dude.
09:35Violating conditions of release, and you cut your ankle bracelet off, dude.
09:38No, I was hiding through the woods, and it fell off.
09:40Right, okay.
09:41It did.
09:42Forgive me if I don't believe you.
09:43Went back trying to find it, and you guys tear it up.
09:46You could see how thick that brush was.
09:49He was sitting five feet in front of us.
09:51We couldn't see him.
09:52All right, Michael, let's walk.
09:53We got an ambulance to catch.
09:54We have a lot of resources, and there's not many ways you can get away from us.
09:58We have canines, helicopters, drones.
10:00Yeah, we're going to catch you.
10:14My mission as an Alaska state trooper is public safety.
10:17Just enforcing traffic laws, which could lead to something else.
10:21We could find someone who just kidnapped, or someone who's driving drunk, you know?
10:25Someone who is transporting illegal narcotics.
10:27Well, canine Bruce, who's in the back here, is trained to sniff illegal narcotics.
10:32So, cocaine, heroin, meth, and fentanyl.
10:36Specifically today, we're going to contact people for motor vehicle violations.
10:42And it could lead to something more.
10:44And it could not.
10:45But you just never know.
10:50Right now, this vehicle's leaving a suspected drug house.
10:53And it's crossing over the center line.
10:56So, we're going to address this situation real quick.
11:02Back November 66, 1036.
11:04Go ahead.
11:06Go ahead.
11:07We're going down Beverly Lakes and Windy Bottom.
11:10We're slow rolling.
11:11It's 60.
11:1255 stops.
11:15You always got to be cautious when doing traffic stops, especially in Alaska.
11:19Everyone's got a gun, and you got to treat it as such.
11:21Put your hands out the window.
11:33What's going on?
11:34Okay.
11:35Well, you're slow to stop.
11:36It's concerning.
11:37Okay.
11:38I'm sorry.
11:39All right.
11:40All right.
11:41Do you have your driver's license and insurance registration?
11:42No.
11:43Do you have any of that?
11:44No.
11:45Oh.
11:46Okay.
11:47Where are you guys coming from?
11:49Places.
11:51Okay.
11:52And Wasilla?
11:55Why?
11:56Is that relevant?
11:57I mean, it is relevant.
11:59Do I have to answer?
12:00You don't have to.
12:02Proof.
12:03Okay.
12:04Is there any reason why you don't want to answer the question?
12:08Okay.
12:09All right.
12:10Insurance.
12:11I'm not trying to be a dick, but you know what I mean?
12:12You have insurance?
12:13All right.
12:14Work on the insurance.
12:15Work on the registration, okay?
12:16I don't want to have to, like, write you a citation for something if it isn't here, okay?
12:20Work on that.
12:21Just hang out right there.
12:26You know, everyone has their right and expectation of privacy.
12:30They have the right to tell me to pound Sam.
12:33What's going on?
12:34What's going on?
12:35What's going on?
12:36What's going on?
12:37You're just .
12:38Affirmed up.
12:39Mr. was arrested about a year ago.
12:45We had an incident where he eluded police, got his vehicle impounded, was arrested, found
12:50nearly a pound of cocaine.
12:52After they had impounded the vehicle and searched it, he got a breaching shotgun, broke the lock
12:57off the impound yard off the impound yard and stole his vehicle.
12:58What's going on?
12:59What's going on?
13:00I recognize the driver.
13:04We had an incident where he eluded police, got his vehicle impounded, was arrested, found
13:16nearly a pound of cocaine.
13:18Subject is hostile towards LEO to officer minimum contact.
13:21I'm sorry, I didn't all let the drug in.
13:22Okay?
13:23I'm .
13:24I know you are.
13:25Oh, you do?
13:26Okay.
13:27What's up?
13:28Any other questions?
13:29What's going on?
13:30Why are you here?
13:31That's all I'm going to tell you.
13:32That's all you're going to tell me?
13:33Yeah.
13:34What the are you doing, dude?
13:37Hey.
13:38He's not allowed to look in the vehicle.
13:39the out of the vehicle.
13:41What?
13:42I'm going to be detained.
13:43For what?
13:44I'm detained you while we complete our investigation.
13:48There's a plain view nest standing on the door and a crack standing in the door.
13:53We have what looks to be a crack pipe in plain view, which is enough for probable cause
13:57here.
13:58You know, white residue right there.
14:00Oh, my body.
14:01Want to go find drugs?
14:05We're going to take another step in the investigation.
14:12We're going to do a canine sniff on the car.
14:15Okay.
14:16Oops.
14:25Went by it a couple of times.
14:26On that last one, the canine indicated that there is a presence of illegal narcotics
14:30coming out of the vehicle.
14:31Oh.
14:32This looks like cocaine.
14:39Then we got crack in there.
14:44Crack cocaine.
14:45This is going to be more than a user amount of cocaine.
14:52Got a gun.
14:56With an extendo.
14:57So the driver's a felon.
14:59Felon in possession of a firearm.
15:02So now we have two of the things that kind of coincide with someone who is dealing drugs.
15:07We got the gun.
15:08Then we got the quantity.
15:1034 grams of cocaine.
15:13What the is going on, man?
15:15What did I do?
15:16It's a drug industry.
15:17What?
15:18I think anywhere you go, people are involved in drug crimes.
15:23They're going to adapt to what law enforcement are doing.
15:26Stop them one way.
15:27They're going to figure out another way to get it into all of the communities in Alaska.
15:31And we're doing the best we can to stop it.
15:33You look to our left, you'll see Sugar Shane's house where a lot of people tend to congregate that are frequent customers of the Alaska State Troopers.
15:55I arrested somebody out of that tourist the other day that had a warrant.
16:00The male occupant had a pending warrant.
16:03So I'm going to check and see if he does have a warrant.
16:10And he does have a warrant.
16:12So we'll go remandle.
16:14The property owner, Sugar Shane, he's cooperative with law enforcement.
16:17But it is a notable spot in the valley where people just are involved in criminal activity.
16:32How's it going?
16:33Hey, what's going on, brother?
16:34What's up?
16:35Looking for Shane.
16:37What did I do now?
16:38Not you. Another Shane.
16:39Oh, it's here somewhere.
16:40Okay.
16:41Do you mind if I walk on your property?
16:43There's so many little makeshift housing areas that you can hide.
16:53Hey, Shane.
16:57Hey, you got a warrant, buddy.
17:00Yeah, I told you about it.
17:02Keep your hand out of your pocket for me.
17:04All right.
17:05My wife's swollen, man.
17:06All right, go ahead and turn around.
17:07Put your hand in front of your back.
17:08Get your hand out of your pocket, please.
17:10Put your hand in front of your back.
17:11Get out of your back.
17:12Hey, can you come bail me out?
17:16150.
17:17150.
17:20I'll pay you.
17:23You got anything on you, Shane, that you shouldn't be taking to jail?
17:26Uh, no.
17:27Let's walk over to my car.
17:28Okay, I'm going to check your pockets.
17:29All right, let's go around this side.
17:31Hey!
17:32I can't drive my car.
17:33Come here.
17:34Dog almost got me.
17:35Hey, can you get me out?
17:36Tonight, today?
17:37Hey, get the keys out of my pocket and just take my car down there.
17:40Right here?
17:41Yeah, I'll pay you.
17:42I'll pay you.
17:43Yeah.
17:44I told you about your warrant, dude.
17:45I know.
17:46I told you to go get taken care of.
17:47Wasn't it like yesterday?
17:48Yeah.
17:49Or the day before yesterday?
17:50All right.
17:51Comfortable as you can be.
17:52It's only a $150 warrant.
17:53I think it's for like theft three.
17:54So it's a felony charge.
17:55He missed arraignment.
17:56Just another day in Massey Valley.
17:57Go ahead.
18:04So it's a felony charge.
18:05He missed arraignment.
18:08Just another day in Massey Valley.
18:23Go ahead.
18:3010-4, they're not physical now?
18:33They weren't during the time of the call.
18:35Caller stated that they're driving back and forth
18:37on the trail to their cabin.
18:39Mile 118 of the park.
18:4110-4.
18:44Got a third-party report of two individuals
18:48arguing back and forth, and that their argument
18:51escalated into a physical altercation at one point.
18:54They're both intoxicated and driving a side-by-side.
18:58If you're intoxicated and driving anything with a motor,
19:00that is DUI.
19:02Yeah, it doesn't matter if they're in a four-wheeler
19:03or on a vehicle, or if that four-wheeler's in a parking
19:06lot or on the roadway.
19:08So we're going to drive to mile marker 118 of the park's
19:12highway to go see if we can find them.
19:16150, 200-mile round trip to go take a call for service.
19:20They'll be driving for a couple hours.
19:22Mile 118 of the park's highway looking for a blue truck and a pullout.
19:30Oh, there's a four-wheeler.
19:34And there's a passed-out man in a side-by-side.
19:37Oh, that's perfect.
19:38We'll go talk to them.
19:40Awesome.
19:41Thanks.
19:42And there's a passed-out man in a side-by-side.
19:43Mile 118 of the park's highway.
19:44And there's a passed-out man in a side-by-side.
19:47Oh, that's perfect.
19:48We'll go talk to them.
19:50Awesome.
19:51Thanks.
19:52And there's a passed-out man in a side-by-side.
20:07Mile 118 of the park's highway.
20:11And there's a passed-out man in a side-by-side.
20:14Hey, sir.
20:15Sir.
20:16Hey, it's the state troopers.
20:18Oh, shoot.
20:19Hey, man.
20:20You all right?
20:21Yeah.
20:22What's going on today?
20:24I don't know.
20:25Who were you with earlier today?
20:27My girlfriend.
20:28Oh, .
20:29Here.
20:30Can you step out of the four-wheeler for me so I can talk to you?
20:35How long have you been parked here for?
20:37A couple hours.
20:38A couple hours?
20:39Well, we got a call about an hour and a half ago.
20:41You guys were awake and having some sort of fight or disagreement
20:45in the parking lot here?
20:47No.
20:48No.
20:49This is in the driver's seat of the blue truck.
20:51Cool.
20:52You want to go talk to .
20:55Well, tell me what happened.
20:57I have no idea.
20:58You guys had some sort of disagreement, at least.
21:01Or else we wanted to have just driven an hour and a half to get here.
21:04Yeah.
21:05Sorry, bro.
21:06I didn't even know.
21:07Is this your pickup truck here?
21:10The Silverado?
21:11Yeah.
21:12All right.
21:13Is there any reason why you drank so much today?
21:16Like something going on?
21:17Is it?
21:18No, we're just heading back home.
21:19And you just slammed a case of beer?
21:22Yeah.
21:23Yeah.
21:24What was the time of your first drink today?
21:27Eight, nine o'clock in the morning.
21:30And what about your last drink?
21:32Maybe noon.
21:33Around noon was your last drink?
21:35How many drinks did you say you told?
21:37You had one beer?
21:38One beer.
21:41I know.
21:42It sounds like a lie.
21:43It is a lie.
21:44No.
21:45I'm going to stop you right there, man.
21:46There's a case of beer on the floorboard that's almost empty.
21:49There's open containers in both doors.
21:51There's open containers in back and more beer.
21:53And you seem pretty drunk.
21:55All right, Brent.
21:56You are going to go to jail today for DUI.
21:58All right?
21:59Have you ever had a DUI before?
22:00It's my fifth.
22:02Your fifth?
22:03I'm going to have you do this PBT real quick.
22:06All right.
22:07Big deep breath.
22:08There you go.
22:09You're .254.
22:11Straight alcohol.
22:13Straight alcohol?
22:14Yeah.
22:15Why do you say that?
22:16Because I just woke up.
22:18That has nothing to do with how the breathalyzer works, man.
22:21If what he said is true, he hasn't drank in an hour and a half,
22:24you know, that's definitely concerning.
22:26He hasn't had anything to drink since we got here.
22:28He was, you know, possibly more intoxicated when he was operating
22:31this side-by-side up and down the road.
22:33Who knows?
22:34He could have been coming here to load that trailer up
22:35and get this thing on the Parkes Highway and caused,
22:37you know, a serious car accident.
22:39So the biggest thing a lot of state troopers do is we go out
22:41to these remote areas and enforce the law where people think
22:44that no one's watching, no one's going to come and hold them
22:46accountable for their actions.
22:48Just because you're out at 118 miles up the Parkes Highway
22:51doesn't mean you can do whatever you want.
22:53So I'm driving by a suspect's residence right now.
23:02He's got a $20,000 felony warrant for pretty violent domestic violence,
23:08assault on his girlfriend.
23:23Basically, we're going to build some intel on him and then come up with a safe plan to arrest him.
23:29About the last two weeks, I've been putting cameras on places he's been staying.
23:36He doesn't look like he's home.
23:41Yeah, we're going to run up to this truck here real quick.
23:47This truck belonged to the suspect.
23:50Patrol drove up here.
23:51He saw Patrol before they were able to see him.
23:55And he exited this truck and ran into the woods.
23:58When he did, he left his cell phone like a meth pipe.
24:01Eventually, he's going to come back for this truck at some point.
24:05I want to see if he's already come back and got his cell phone.
24:09If he came back and got his cell phone, that's good for us.
24:11We'll be able to get a warrant to track it.
24:27Cell phone's still in the dash, so he has not been back.
24:37He probably escaped down this trail, I bet.
24:41One of the tools I use a lot for tracking down people is these Reconyx cameras.
24:52It's just a hunting trail cam, but it sends live pictures to my cell phone.
24:57So this guy's been pretty savvy.
24:59He sent his kid out to look, I think, to look for cameras.
25:03He found our camera using his cell phone, taking a picture of it right there.
25:07He's super paranoid right now.
25:08He knows we're looking for him.
25:10He knows he's got a warrant.
25:11He's not using the, you know, front driveways to his place.
25:15Allegedly, he's using, like, a small, like, ATV trail to enter his property.
25:19So he's not staying at places long.
25:21I mean, like, a few hours.
25:23And then moving on to the next place.
25:25He's been real hard to pin down.
25:27We'll get him eventually.
25:34Man, this is terrible.
25:36I can't see nothing.
25:38Well, there's some fog, isn't it?
25:39Oh, yeah.
25:40We've got him on the spot now.
25:41Step it up.
25:42OK.
25:46So we are heading out to North Pole.
25:49We got a location for the suspect.
25:52We're able to put him on scene with some trail cams.
25:56Hopefully, he's still there when we get there.
25:58If he leaves on foot, we're going to lose him in this, especially the weather today, foggy.
26:03And, I mean, you couldn't ask for better weather to try to escape into.
26:07Hey, units responding, let's switch to just lights and no sirens at this point.
26:14He just walked out to the bus.
26:21Alaska State Troopers with a warrant for your arrest!
26:24Up to the door of the bus with your hands empty!
26:28He's got eyes.
26:29I got him, I got him.
26:30Hands out!
26:31The suspect's got a $20,000 felony warrant for pretty violent assault on his girlfriend.
26:40He's super paranoid right now.
26:42He knows we're looking for him.
26:43He knows he's got a warrant.
26:47Alaska State Troopers with a warrant for your arrest!
26:50Come to the door of the bus with your hands empty!
26:56Alaska State Troopers with a warrant for your arrest!
26:59You got eyes.
27:01I got him, I got him.
27:02He's coming out with his hands up.
27:03Hands up!
27:04Yeah, walk through the, just go walk through the weeds if you can.
27:08You got it.
27:09All right.
27:10Just stop there, turn around for me.
27:12You got any weapons on your ?
27:14I don't believe I do.
27:15Okay, just keep walking towards me.
27:17Backwards, keep walking backwards towards me.
27:20Okay, just don't reach for it, thanks for telling me.
27:22Keep walking backwards.
27:23Okay.
27:24Your hands be on your back.
27:26Did anybody else in the bus ?
27:31So that went as smooth as it could went.
27:34We were able to get up on him before he was able to escape the bus and call him out and he was compliant.
27:39You were about to say something.
27:40What were you going to ask me?
27:41It's all right.
27:42You're really nice.
27:43Thank you, guys.
27:44Bye.
27:45Well, listen, I appreciate you being so cooperative with me today, okay?
27:48I think at this point, from being on the run for so long, he's tired and worn out.
27:55And he even said he just kind of feels a little relieved at this point.
27:58He was out all night running in the woods, you know, cold, wet, hungry.
28:03So he's ready.
28:04He's ready.
28:05We're going out to do proactive traffic enforcement.
28:23In the Mat-Su Valley, there's so many people that, you know, live here and commute into Anchorage every day.
28:28It doesn't matter what time of year it is.
28:29You always have a lot of people on the roadways engaged in criminal activity.
28:344632 is where I pulled over that trailer the other day.
28:38That's where I'm right around the corner.
28:41Trooper Vagari's got a vehicle pulled over.
28:43Both occupants in the vehicle have warrants out for their arrest.
28:46So we're just going to back him up to help him make those arrests.
28:51Oh, yeah, that's for me.
28:58Yeah.
28:59You know that, uh, mixed card you got a while ago?
29:01You got a warrant for it.
29:02I haven't had a mixed card.
29:03Well, you got a warrant for it, I guess, so.
29:05I got a warrant?
29:06Yeah, you mind stepping on it?
29:07I appreciate it.
29:08Anything on you?
29:09No.
29:10Any needles?
29:11Anything on you?
29:12No.
29:13I have a warrant?
29:14Yeah, I got it.
29:15All right.
29:16All right.
29:17You got a warrant out for your arrest, too.
29:19So I need you to step out of the car for me, OK?
29:22You got anything in your pocket?
29:24It's going to pick or stick me.
29:26No.
29:27You don't need to launch it there.
29:28You got any personal property in the vehicle?
29:31A purse?
29:32A wallet?
29:33Yeah.
29:34A purse.
29:35Where's your purse at?
29:36Right up here.
29:37Here, don't go back to the car.
29:39Just tell me what it looks like.
29:40What color is it?
29:41Deal with it.
29:43Who's the ?
29:44There's a person that's in the car.
29:46There's a third person in the car?
29:50Oh, there's someone else in the car.
29:52Oh, hi.
29:53Yeah.
29:54Can I get out the office?
29:55Yeah, you can go down.
29:56Yeah, do your thing.
29:57One, two.
29:58OK.
29:59There we go.
30:00Where were you sitting at in the car?
30:02Were you just on the floor here?
30:03Yeah, I was just sitting on the floor.
30:04All right.
30:05There's some tin foil right there.
30:06Do you have anything in your purse?
30:07I don't.
30:08Is it all right if I check and make sure you don't have anything in there?
30:10Go ahead.
30:11OK.
30:13Yep.
30:14Was that in the car when you got there or whose is that?
30:15I got into the car.
30:16Just here?
30:17Yeah.
30:18Oh, they came and picked you up or something?
30:19I got in the car on a TV.
30:20Where were they taking you?
30:21Here or?
30:22Yeah, they were taking into the car.
30:23OK.
30:24Yeah.
30:25Just got a little bit of meth in there.
30:27When's the last time you used?
30:28That's not my option.
30:30Who's would that belong to?
30:31Well, how did you end up with it?
30:36Because she handed it to me.
30:38She handed it to you?
30:39She just threw it in the back and you threw it in your purse?
30:42She threw it in the back.
30:44So why did you pick it up and put it in your purse?
30:46I didn't even look in it.
30:48But why did you?
30:49She just...
30:50Just threw it.
30:51When you guys were getting pulled over?
30:52And you weren't like, oh man, the cops are coming to contact us.
30:55I wonder why she threw this.
30:57I just threw it.
30:58OK, go ahead.
30:59What about the needle?
31:00Is this yours?
31:01No, no.
31:02I just got it up in the van.
31:03Oh, OK.
31:04Were you just cleaning up all the trash in there or something?
31:06Like that, yeah.
31:07Why didn't you get the tinfoil then?
31:09I didn't even know what it was in bed.
31:11Well, she's got Suboxone in here.
31:12Yeah.
31:13You found yourself in a mess now helping out all your friends.
31:16You're not under arrest or anything like that, but I'm going to interview them too
31:19and figure out what's going on, OK?
31:20OK.
31:21She told me that you threw a silicone container in the backseat
31:24when you're getting pulled over.
31:25Is that true?
31:26No.
31:27Yeah.
31:28She had some crystal meth in her purse and said it belongs to you.
31:30No.
31:31Oh my God.
31:32What the hell?
31:33You think she's lying to me?
31:38Yeah, she's lying.
31:39OK.
31:40I'll be right back with you guys.
31:41Thanks.
31:42Two are going to jail for their warrants.
31:44Two of the three are being charged with misconduct involving controlled substances.
31:47Is she going to come get me?
31:49They want to know if you'll come pick them up still.
31:51Yeah, I will come pick them up.
31:52OK.
31:53We're taking a normal traffic stop and getting people to have arrest warrants
31:57to answer for the crimes they had previously committed,
31:59and we found some drugs that we got off the street too.
32:01So this was a fruitful traffic stop.
32:22Sergeant Chris Rafferty with the Alaska State Troopers in Nome.
32:25Today we are going out to the villages to try to do a warrant roundup.
32:31Trooper Barrett is coming along with us.
32:34We have about seven people who are wanted who have warrants.
32:37It's costly for the state to travel to these villages,
32:40so when we go we try to make it worthwhile
32:43and to try to get as many of the people who are wanted out of the village and into the jail.
32:55I was stationed in this area for about two and a half years.
33:04That's a pretty small village.
33:06There's a school, there's a clinic, everything that they're going to need to survive and function.
33:10This was actually one of my favorite places to work.
33:13I actually miss being out here.
33:15A lot of times when I come in, everyone comes up to me and, you know,
33:19welcome home is what they always say to me when they see me.
33:22This first one we're going to has had a warrant for probably about a year now.
33:32How are you doing?
33:33Good.
33:34What's up, buddy?
33:35Is he here?
33:36Yes, he's in.
33:37Okay.
33:38He's got a warrant.
33:39Can we go in?
33:40Yes, yes.
33:41Okay.
33:42You guys didn't take care of it last year, so I don't really give a right now.
34:01Did you know you had a warrant?
34:03No, I did not.
34:04Oh, okay.
34:05Well, have you been talking to your probation officer for the last year?
34:07How can I, if I can't even land a single job enough to pay for my phone?
34:13Yeah.
34:14That's probably why you got the warrant, because you weren't checking in with them.
34:17Give it some carrots, man.
34:19Well, for the ones that are wanting to change.
34:22Yeah.
34:23I haven't heard your name in a while, either.
34:25Exactly.
34:26You've been doing good.
34:27I agree with you 100%.
34:29The other reason why I should be getting off easy.
34:32That's up to the judge and your probation officer.
34:35But I agree that you've been doing good, because I haven't heard your name in a long time.
34:39Yeah.
34:40I'm done with that .
34:42Glad to hear that.
34:45Probation violations are pretty common.
34:47Probation is kind of hard in Western Alaska, because there's no probation officers nearby.
34:53They have to fly into Nome to do that a lot of times.
35:01We've got a few more stops we've got to make.
35:07How are you doing?
35:08All right.
35:09Good.
35:10Hey, officer.
35:11Can I have a sticker?
35:12We call it community policing.
35:14You just pass out the stickers.
35:16Spread the good vibes.
35:17This one's special.
35:18Look.
35:21That's me riding a polar bear.
35:22Yeah.
35:23I'll give you a hug.
35:25One of the benefits of working in these small villages like this, spend time in the community.
35:30You get to know everyone, and then it's so much easier to do this job.
35:34It wasn't like that when I first got out here.
35:36It took me a while to get street cred in the village.
35:43Let's go ahead down to the side by side, okay?
35:45I'm going to have you hop in the passenger seat of this thing.
36:01It was a very successful day.
36:03We ended up coming back with seven people total.
36:06We were able to do it without any incidents, any use of force.
36:10We were able to also interact with people in the village, which is one of the best things
36:14that we can do out there to help build trust in the community.
36:17We're currently on the weekend night shift in Alaska.
36:18There's all kinds of variety of characters, and there's not really a usual day.
36:30Every day is different.
36:31Every day is 38, Mackinac.
36:32I'm clear for our chest, I have to cut for.
36:3338.
36:34They have an in the area.
36:35He's about 39 years old with black curly hair.
36:37Who's trained to steal some water with liquor off the bar.
36:38It does have an ankle monitor on.
36:39Subject is trained in boxing, and the man's going to be in the area.
36:40And the man's going to tell the man's going to be a good job.
36:41I'm going to tell the man's going to be a good job.
36:42I'm going to tell you what's going to be a good job.
36:43I'm going to tell you.
36:44I'm going to tell you what's going to do that.
36:45Well, I'm going to tell you about it.
36:46It's a good job.
36:47You've got a great job.
36:48I'm going to tell you about it.
37:00and was arrested for assaulting hospital staff.
37:0310-4, 10-19.
37:05He's also carrying a skateboard
37:06and he was speaking a different language.
37:12So we just got dispatched to the tug bar.
37:14A male tried to steal some bottles of liquor from the bar
37:18in an area where there's not very much foot traffic,
37:20which should make him very easy to spot.
37:23And that might be him right there.
37:25McElwain 388, I've got the male KGB in Portie Pine.
37:30I'm not touching you.
37:35I'll stand right over here.
37:36I just don't want you to get hit by the car.
37:38So why don't you just tell me real quick
37:40what happened at the bar?
37:41Okay, I met this lady on my way.
37:43I tell her, listen, I'm trying to find another city,
37:46another place, because I have an ankle bracelet, right?
37:49I'm coming to jail, I got my paperwork right here.
37:51Perfect.
37:52So I'm just trying to get out of Anchorage,
37:53Palmer, and Wasilla, you know?
37:54Okay.
37:55I was trying to find Fairbue, oh my, Fairbanks, Fairbue?
37:58Fairbanks.
37:59Fairbanks.
38:00Are you allowed to go to Fairbanks while you're on an ankle?
38:02Why not?
38:03Alaska, anywhere in Alaska.
38:04Okay.
38:05Sometimes they restrict you.
38:06I don't know territories in Alaska,
38:07but so far what I know, anywhere in Alaska.
38:09Okay.
38:10Can you just put the skateboard down for me
38:11just so we can talk without you having that in your hand?
38:13Yeah, yeah, yeah.
38:14Okay.
38:15So you were trying to find a way to Fairbanks.
38:16My name is , and my birth certificate is .
38:20So it's myself in my own body.
38:22I don't know.
38:23Why should I use another body, because I have my own one, right?
38:25Yeah.
38:26We got to talk about what happened at the bar, man.
38:28Hey, this lady.
38:29Nice lady.
38:30She offered me a bowl of soup.
38:31I eat it, delicious, with crackers and all that.
38:3410-4, can we have someone contact the bar to see if they want him charged with attempted
38:38death or just trespassed?
38:39So then I went to the party, and I heard a voice.
38:42I'm not crazy.
38:43It's like .
38:44Grab any bottle and go.
38:46You know?
38:47And that's exactly what I did.
38:48Do you know who did that?
38:49How do I know if I was in the party sitting down?
38:51Okay.
38:52Yeah, I didn't know.
38:53I didn't know if you saw him or not.
38:54That's exactly what I know.
38:55They want a lifetime trespass.
38:56No criminal charges them.
38:58So you're good to go.
38:59I just have to tell you a couple things.
39:01You're trespassed.
39:02You can't.
39:03You won't see me here.
39:04Just let me finish.
39:05It's a lifetime trespass, which means you can't ever go back there.
39:08Yeah, I know.
39:09Like Starbucks.
39:10Yeah.
39:11If you go back, you could get arrested.
39:12I know.
39:13I know.
39:14All right.
39:15You're good to go.
39:16I appreciate it.
39:17Have a safe one.
39:18I think he's a pretty nice guy.
39:19He's just going through some stuff right now.
39:20They don't want any charges for the attempted theft since he never actually got away with
39:24a liquor bottle.
39:25So he's been trespassed, and hopefully we don't get any further calls on him.
39:35I'm Sergeant Chris Havens.
39:40I work for the Alaska State Troopers.
39:42I've been working within this agency for 13 years now.
39:46Right now we're in a seasonal change.
39:47We're going into fall, which is usually like a couple of weeks long.
39:51And then all of a sudden winter hits.
39:53It gets colder.
39:54Starts to change over to long sleeves.
39:56Okay.
39:57Matt, come on me down.
40:00I'll be out at Shane's house on Willowa.
40:03This driver was like slumped over.
40:06And this is a known drug location, so we have to do a welfare check.
40:11Hey, are you okay?
40:13Yeah.
40:14Yeah, that's fine.
40:15Okay.
40:16Because you're like slumped down, and I thought you were having a drug overdose.
40:21Exactly.
40:22If you have consumed any controlled substance, please don't drive.
40:28I am.
40:29All right.
40:30Have a good day.
40:31Stay safe.
40:32The vehicle's not running.
40:33It's not like we have a DUI in this case, but he is okay.
40:38Sugar Shane, the owner of the property.
40:41I think Shane's gracious enough, and people sometimes take advantage of him.
40:46What are you looking for?
40:47Somebody looked like they were passed out behind the wheel, and I was concerned about their welfare.
40:54Appreciate that.
40:55But it just so happens that obviously I know has been hanging around, and he was apparently riding a stolen four-wheeler.
41:02Is Mr. around?
41:03No, I have no idea.
41:04I haven't seen you all today.
41:05Okay.
41:09Can you show it to us?
41:10Yeah.
41:11All right, cool.
41:12I see you got a new trailer.
41:13I love it, huh?
41:14Yeah.
41:15I gotta get it to us.
41:16Oh, excellent.
41:21Tango, zero, six, five, eight.
41:24You gotta be careful sometimes when folks are bringing stuff on the property.
41:29Yeah.
41:30They better be careful.
41:31I bring my foot on the .
41:32Okay.
41:33I'm not bucking a badge and a gun, man.
41:35That's for damn true.
41:37All right, Shane.
41:38It is stolen.
41:39So we're gonna remove it from the property.
41:41Oh, it is stolen?
41:42It is stolen.
41:43Okay.
41:44Well, we appreciate your help.
41:45We'll get out of here for you.
41:48It fit?
41:49Yeah, it should fit.
41:51Unfortunately, we didn't give the operator of the ATV, or the person who likely stole it.
41:56But good resolution in that.
41:58We recovered it.
41:59It's going back to the owner.
42:01And it's one less thing that Shane has to deal with.
42:08Hopefully, he kind of knows who to pay attention to and who shouldn't be on this property
42:13so he doesn't have consistent problems.
42:17It's a pretty successful end here.
42:19Luckily, somebody wasn't inconvenienced, especially the nine-year-old that operates it.
42:23Pretty decent ATV for a nine-year-old.
42:25I'm thankful.
42:26All right, have a good one.
42:27You too.
42:28Thank you, sir.
