00:00Hey Naturally Curly World, I'm Lauren and I'm Leslie and today we're reviewing
00:05Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It Netflix series. My first impressions of Nolah
00:12darling insatiable. There's a girl that I once knew who often had a friend or two
00:17she gave them time of waiting rhymes to fly. Before we do that we're gonna tell
00:23you a little bit about the products we're using today. I am going to be using
00:27the Bounce Curl Moisturizing Shampoo and then I'll be conditioning with the
00:34DevaCurl One Condition Delight and I will be using this hair and scalp cleanser by
00:42Coils by Nature. It's the first time I'm trying it. I'm really excited and then I
00:47will be scrunching my hair with the Urban Curls Gel. Today I'm using the Sasha Pure
00:55Rehydrating Cleansing Conditioner so this is gonna be my detangler also. Then I'm
01:00gonna follow up with the Ecoco Moisture Rich Leave-In Conditioner. Prep my curls for
01:07styling with the Redken Corvaceous. All curl types. And then I'm gonna follow up with
01:18that with the Miel Honey and Ginger Styling Gel. So we're gonna go wash our
01:23hair and then we'll be right back.
01:26Alright y'all so we're back. We just washed our hair and now I'm about to detangle and Leslie...
01:34What are you doing? I'm gonna detangle as well. I'm gonna use the Honey Baby Naturals
01:38Hair Smoothie to kind of run through my waves. It'll take like two seconds. It's gonna
01:43take me 45 minutes to detangle with the Sasha Pure cleansing conditioner. So I
01:49actually didn't rinse it out. I left it in just so I could show y'all what I do.
01:53There was a film in 86 that Spike Lee did. He recreated it-ish and made this
01:59series on Netflix but we didn't love it. There were parts but overall no. This is
02:09focused on Nola Darling who's the main character and she's in a polyamorous
02:14relationship. I personally don't feel that it was a good representation of a
02:19polyamorous relationship. I felt like Nola didn't have her life together like
02:26most of us but used people to distract her. So each dude plus Opal they all were
02:33like very specific type of people. I don't feel like they did a good job and
02:38maybe that wasn't the focus but I don't feel like they were multi-dimensional.
02:43They're just like this person I am so like Mars was like the goofy guy who
02:48didn't really who had like multiple jobs. Yeah like b-boy. B-boy was just like not
02:54taken seriously. And then Jamie's like very corporate, very suit and tie, is also
03:00married by the way. Oh yeah. Very married. Yeah. But going through marital
03:05problems as they all say. Yeah. And then you have Greer who was the model. He's the
03:12guy you find in New York that has like 10k on Instagram and just thinks he's all
03:16that. Yeah like model slash photographer. Oh that's right. He was a model slash. Yeah yeah yeah.
03:20But he was supposed to be like the artsy one. Yeah. Yeah. And then there's Opal. Yeah so Opal was she a plant shop owner? Yeah. Yeah she had her own business. She was an entrepreneur.
03:34She was a mom. Yeah. Yeah. And she was just really beautiful. Yeah she's gorgeous. Yeah. She's the type of girl that probably played like volleyball in college and then got a modeling gig. Yep.
03:47Um you know hashtag goals. Yeah that's Opal. And I feel she's probably the only person we saw in the series that had something to her character other than just being like a love interest.
03:59And I would say too the person that Nola like really was vulnerable with out of all of them. So you could tell that there were some feelings there but she just like didn't know how to be with Opal in that sense as opposed to how she was with Jamie, Mars, and Greer. They just were kind of like just toys.
04:18Yeah. With Shmetka she um she was uncomfortable with her body and she was throughout the whole like series she's talking about getting butt injections um but she can't afford to like go to
04:29like a plastic surgeon surgeon. Right. In like a real place. So she's like thinking of going like the back alleyway. Um and she's doing all this because she wants to be one of the top dancers in New York. Um and so I feel like I don't know I was kind of upset that Nola wasn't supportive of her friend's decision.
04:49Yeah. Like I definitely felt there was some like judgment. You forgot about Clorinda though. The other friend. Okay. Oh yes. Yes. Clorinda. So Mars was Clorinda's boyfriend first. Yes girl. It's been a minute. Yes. And then Nola just came in and swept him. I think I think they broke up. I'm not really. I think did they break up. Nola and Mars?
05:11No no. Clorinda and Mars broke up. Yeah. And then Nola came in and got her second. They didn't really give any like background to that. They may uh I feel like it might have just been like a fling. Yeah. But I feel like her friend might have had real feelings for Mars. I think she really liked him. Yeah. Mars is so lovable. He's so cute. He is. I love Mars.
05:31You know. Nola is walking down the street in New York. Going back home to her like apartment at Brownstone. And she gets attacked by this guy. And the guy's like very aggressive with her. Um. So real quick now I'm applying the gel to my hair. I'm just gonna stretch it. This guy's attack like spurs her to create this entire movement that says like my name isn't. Is that what it said? I think it said. Yeah. Yeah. My name isn't.
06:00And she puts it like over the top of all these different faces of black women like Latino women and things like that. And plasters it all over uh Fort Greene. But nobody knows that she is the artist behind this work.
06:12And so Clorinda finds out that she's the artist and puts it in an art show. Yeah. And then Nola gets really like mad about it. Yeah. And just.
06:24She was also upset because Mars was the one that told Clorinda. That told Clorinda. Yeah. Yeah. And Nola really wanted to keep this hush hush. It was like very much like gorilla art. And she didn't want it to be tied with her name. She just wanted it to be like an outlet. Right.
06:38Yeah. To like express like all this frustration she had with being like attacked and sexually assaulted.
06:42Okay y'all. So I'm back from washing out my cleansing conditioner. And now I'm about to spray my hair with a little bit of leave-in. And then to find my curls for a wash and go.
06:52So overall I feel like they really missed the mark. And this was a good opportunity for them to kind of prove that like they don't believe in the trash that they like did in the 86 film. Right. Right. But.
07:11It just didn't happen that way. No. It didn't. At all. The way they just depicted women's sexual experiences altogether. Which is not very positive. Yeah. Yeah. I don't even feel like I know Nola. Yeah. No. Yeah. Absolutely.
07:27They like they really focused on just like her sexuality. But I don't know her. Yeah. I do like that they touched on gentrification. Everyone was really beautiful in this show. Yeah. Everyone's very attractive. And of course Spike Lee had to make a really political episode about the presidential election. So that's one to watch for sure. But it is going to have a season two though. So I'm curious to see what happens.
07:55Which means. Anyone who's trying to make a film series. Anybody can do it. Because it's going to sit up for a season two. You can get a season two. You can get a season one. You can get a season one. So I'm going to diffuse my hair. And I'm going to let this air dry. And we'll be back. Yep. Overall I would say if you're bored. If you're looking for something to watch and you've gone through all the documentaries on Netflix. Right. You can definitely just pick this up.
08:25Finish it up. Finish it in one evening. I mean yeah. There's no hate. To the show at all. Like. We support you Spike. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But. That's how I feel. Okay. Out of five stars. I would give it a. Two and a half. Two and a half.
