03 February - National forecast presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00Time for your afternoon update from the Met Office.
00:03A lot of cloud, a lot of rain, there's some hill snow to talk about,
00:06and tonight things could turn icy for some of us too.
00:09It's a real mess on the satellite.
00:10Picture the view from space, a big line of cloud.
00:14There's a swirl down to the southwest.
00:16That's an area of low pressure.
00:17But up over Scandinavia, the dominant weather feature,
00:20chunky area of high pressure, a lot of cold air in here,
00:23blocking these lows from moving in.
00:26So as they try and push up, everything gets squeezed together.
00:29Lots of isobars on the chart generating this brisk east or southeasterly flow,
00:33which is bringing a real chill today.
00:36That cloud is providing quite a bit of rain, rain falling onto ground.
00:40That is already very soggy, likely to cause further issues.
00:43We've got a yellow warning in place for parts of southern England.
00:47We've got a snow warning in place for parts of eastern Scotland.
00:50The feed of the winds continues to bring moisture in here.
00:53It'll be rain maybe on the coast, but you won't have to come too far inland
00:56or go too high before we start seeing some snow.
00:59And with those strong winds, it'll be blowing around on those higher routes.
01:03Blizzards not very pleasant to drive through.
01:05The rain will creep into north Wales, turning to snow over the hills here
01:09across the Midlands and East Anglia.
01:11Quite a soggy afternoon.
01:12And even where it's dry across parts of northern England,
01:15it is cold thanks to easterly wind.
01:18Temperatures only 3 or 4 degrees for many places.
01:21And when you add on the strength of the wind, it feels even colder.
01:25Milder air is into the southwest.
01:27It doesn't feel quite as cold here, and things are at least drying up a touch
01:30across Devon and Cornwall.
01:32The best of the dry and bright weather today will, again, be in western Scotland.
01:36As we go through the evening and overnight, the rain continues to track northwards,
01:39and we'll see a bit more snow as it hits the hills of north Wales and northern England.
01:44Some snow over the higher routes again here,
01:46but even potentially coming down to lower levels.
01:48As we go through the night, we could see some freezing rain as well.
01:51So the potential for some icy conditions across north Wales and parts of northern England.
01:56Further snow coming in across the eastern side of Scotland,
01:59and more of it extending up towards Shetland as well.
02:02The wet weather is clearing from parts of the south through the night,
02:06so it will at least turn a bit drier here.
02:08But it's going to turn quite murky, a lot of low cloud around,
02:11and we could see a few fog patches forming across the far south too.
02:16Temperatures generally not dropping too much.
02:18You'll feel cold because of the wind, but actually most places staying above freezing.
02:23On to Wednesday, we've still got a real mishmash.
02:25We've still got Met Office warnings in place for snow and ice over the hills of north Wales
02:30and northern England initially.
02:32As I said, it could come down to lower levels for a time,
02:34so not great for the morning commute here, but it does turn drier through the day.
02:38It stays wet in eastern Scotland.
02:40We'll continue to see some snow coming in here and across the northern Isles too,
02:45and still blown in by a brisk wind.
02:47Further south, the winds do ease off a little bit compared to today.
02:51And after a grey start, well, I'm pretty hopeful,
02:54we'll see some sunny spells coming through for Wednesday afternoon.
02:58Across the Midlands and southern England and much of Wales,
03:01a good deal drier and brighter than today.
03:03It should turn drier through the day over northern England and northern Ireland too.
03:08And temperature will be higher as well by three or four degrees in most instances.
03:12And with those winds lighter, it'll certainly feel brighter if we see some sunny spells across the south.
03:17Quite a contrast in here.
03:19Notice, though, there is some wet weather lurking down to the south.
03:22Could see a few showers coming into the southwest of England.
03:25Another zone of rain then likely to trek north through Wednesday night and into Thursday.
03:30Should turn drier through the evening over central and southern parts of Scotland,
03:35but stays pretty wet across the far northeast from that weather front.
03:39That spirals away, but we've got a repeating weather pattern.
03:42Low pressure systems continuing to try and get in into the southwest.
03:47High pressure continues to block their progress.
03:50So we continue with that southeasterly wind.
03:53More details on all of that, particularly those weather warnings on our app and on our website.
