02 February - National forecast presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00Welcome to your latest update from the Met Office. The warnings board sums up the weather quite nicely at the moment.
00:06Further rain coming into the southwest. We have a Met Office yellow warning in place.
00:10The Isle of Wight, parts of Hampshire, Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.
00:15Not huge amounts of rain here, but because the ground is saturated, any extra rainfall has the potential to cause further flooding problems.
00:22And then the colder air in place across the northeast. Here we've got a snow warning.
00:27Now, initially, the snow confined to the tops of the hills, but it will come down as we go through Tuesday and also potentially causing some disruption.
00:37Here's the rain creeping in through Monday evening by the end of the night, extending into parts of South Wales as well.
00:44Some drizzly bits of rain here and there over England and Wales and Northern Ireland, but many places here just dry and cloudy through the night.
00:50There's the rain feeding into eastern Scotland on that brisk wind.
00:54Snow set initially over the tops of the Grampians, but coming down to maybe affect some of the routes on the roads as we go through Tuesday morning's rush hour here.
01:04So something else to be aware of.
01:06Temperature-wise, mostly holding up a little bit above freezing because of the breeze and because of the cloud.
01:10Now, that breeze is going to bring out a colder feel for most of the country on Tuesday.
01:15The rain will continue to creep northwards, a damp day for South Wales, along with much of southern England.
01:21The rain will spread into parts of the Midlands and eventually into East Anglia.
01:25Again, the central slice, much of Northern England, Northern Ireland dry and some brightness in Western Scotland.
01:31Again, in stark contrast to eastern Scotland, where the coast likely to hang on to rain, but anywhere really inland.
01:39And that rain's going to turn increasingly to snow as we go through the day and potentially cause further disruption.
01:44And then there's that wind.
01:46So, particularly on the higher routes, that's snow blowing around and that wind also bringing a real chill.
01:51Temperatures at four or five degrees.
01:53We might get up to 10, 11 degrees in the southwest as Cornwall turns a bit drier and brighter as we go through the day.
01:59The wind's switching direction here.
02:01So, that's the one part of the country where temperatures may actually be slightly higher on Tuesday compared to Monday.
02:07But elsewhere, this map is showing us that we're one to three degrees lower for much of the country.
02:14So, it will feel quite a bit colder come Tuesday, especially when you add that wind on along those North Sea coasts.
02:20Increasingly, the snow likely to head further north, potentially affecting Shetland as we go through Tuesday night and into Wednesday.
02:27So, another snow warning in place here.
02:30Again, the snow continuing to fall over these eastern parts of Scotland.
02:34Again, likely to cause some problems.
02:36And even further south, as the rain heads northwards, encountering the colder air, there'll be some snow mixed in over northern England and southern Scotland.
02:43Initially over hills, but could come down to lower levels for a time, as it could over North Wales.
02:48Turning back to rain here, though, probably by Wednesday morning.
02:50In the south, it should at least turn a little drier as we go through Tuesday night.
02:55And again, most places staying above freezing, with some clearer skies, exception to that maybe western Scotland.
03:01Little will change on Wednesday across the north.
03:04We continue to feed in the moisture, the cloud, the rain and the snow into eastern Scotland.
03:09And across the northern Isles, it'll be a duller, damper day over northern England, northern Ireland.
03:14Although northern England may turn a bit drier.
03:15It should be a much brighter day, though, for the Midlands, East Anglia, southern England and south Wales.
03:21And as a result, quite a bit milder as well.
03:23I mean, temperatures back to the average, really, for the time of year.
03:26Whereas further north, there's still going to be a couple of degrees lower and feeling cooler with that wind across the far northeast.
03:32Plenty going on, then, with the weather.
