00:00Amen. If you'd like to turn to Matthew chapter 16, I'm going to read from verse 13.
00:13I did give this talk at the Bible study a couple of weeks ago, but it was pouring with rain and there weren't many people there.
00:18And if you were there, you'll have to hear it again, but it won't do you any harm to hear it again.
00:24Matthew 16, we're going to start at verse 13.
00:27When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,
00:33Who do men say that I am? I, the Son of Man, am.
00:37So they said, Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, others Jeremiah, one of the prophets.
00:42He said to them, But who do you say that I am?
00:46Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God.
00:51Jesus answered and said to him, Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you,
00:56but my Father who is in heaven.
00:58And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church,
01:03and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
01:06And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven,
01:09and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven,
01:11whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
01:14Then he commanded his disciples that they should tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ.
01:22From that time Jesus began to show to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things,
01:28from the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed and raised the third day.
01:33Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, Far be it from you, Lord, this shall not happen to you.
01:39But he turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan.
01:42You are an offence to me if you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.
01:47Then Jesus said to his disciples, If anyone desires to come after me,
01:50let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
01:53Whoever desires to save his life will lose it.
01:56Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
01:58What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?
02:04Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
02:07For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels,
02:11and then he will reward each one according to his works.
02:17So the theme today is I will build my church.
02:21A lot of people are worried about the state of the world.
02:25Pete was just telling me this morning that he heard on the news
02:27that Mr. Putin might drop a bomb on us in London.
02:30Well, hopefully he won't.
02:32We've got terrible things happening in Iran.
02:33We've got terrible things happening all over the world,
02:35and we wonder what can we do about it.
02:37We can pray, but practically, actually, there's not a lot we can do about it.
02:41Things have been set in motion, and they're happening.
02:44What we can do is build the church, and we can preach the gospel.
02:47We can tell people the answer to it in the word of God.
02:51But basically, the answer is in Jesus, and in the church which he's going to build.
02:57And that church is going to be the continuation of life on earth after Jesus returns,
03:02when he just returns with his church to set up his messianic kingdom,
03:06which is the hope we have.
03:08But in the meantime, let's look at this passage.
03:10I will build my church.
03:11What do you understand by the word church?
03:13Interestingly, the word church only appears twice in the Gospels,
03:18and they're both times in the Gospel of Matthew,
03:2122 times in the book of Acts, 76 times in the epistles,
03:25and 20 times in the book of Revelation.
03:29Why is it not happening in the Gospels?
03:31Well, at the time when Jesus was before the cross,
03:35the church, as a messianic body or as a Christian body of people, did not exist.
03:40It came into being after the resurrection, after the ascension,
03:43and after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.
03:47You could say in a way that the disciples of Jesus before the cross
03:50were the beginning of the church, the church in embryo, if you like.
03:54But until Pentecost, it was not organized into what we know as to be the body of the Messiah
03:58or the true church of Jesus Christ.
04:02The word church itself in English is a translation of the Greek word in the New Testament,
04:09Ekklesia, which itself comes related to a Hebrew word, Kahal.
04:15The Greek Ekklesia means a called-out assembly.
04:19And the Hebrew word Kahal actually means also a gathering or a congregation.
04:24So in both those cases, it's talking about a body of people,
04:27not a building, not an organization.
04:30There's actually another word, Kuriakon, Greek word,
04:33which means the Lord's house.
04:36And in the way which languages, words change as they go from one language to another,
04:40actually our word church is related to the Greek word Kuriakon.
04:45It goes from Kuriakon to Kircher in German,
04:47to Kirch in Scottish, to church in English.
04:52In a way, it's a pity that it does that
04:53because it's not the word which is used in the New Testament.
04:56The word Kuriakon never appears in the New Testament.
04:59The word Ekklesia does.
05:01We have the word Ekklesiastical, which means to do with the church in English.
05:06Interesting, the French word for church is Eglise,
05:08which is related to the Greek word Ekklesia.
05:12But the English word actually uses this second word, Kuriakon.
05:15Kuriakon means a building, the Lord's house,
05:19the building and the institution, if you like, of the church,
05:23which is not the word used in the New Testament.
05:25The New Testament word is the people.
05:26So you have a slight difference there.
05:30And the church is actually not the building, it's not the institution,
05:33it's the people gathered together.
05:36Jesus said, where two or three are gathered together in my name,
05:38I am there in the midst of them.
05:40So you can have a church meeting,
05:42sitting on a bus going home as you talk to each other and pray to the Lord.
05:46You can have a church meeting in your house,
05:47you can have a church meeting wherever you like.
05:49But where it's two or three gathered together in my name,
05:52I'm there in the midst.
05:53In parts of the world where there's persecution,
05:56that's the only option that they have to them.
05:59They can't meet in buildings like this.
06:00They have to meet informally in houses or in wherever they can meet together.
06:06Maybe as apostasy sweeps through the institutional churches,
06:09it may become more and more difficult for Christians in this country
06:12to meet in church buildings
06:13because they're not places where the faith is truly taught.
06:19So the church is actually the people meeting together.
06:22And we can have church meetings wherever we are.
06:25So we went over yesterday to meet with Mike and Pat
06:28to anoint Mike in the name of the Lord.
06:31And we had a wonderful time of prayer and praise.
06:33And I thought, you know, here we are sitting in his room.
06:35This is the church meeting together.
06:36And we are exercising the gifts of the Holy Spirit
06:40and praying for one another in the body of the Messiah.
06:43You can go into a wonderful church building, a cathedral,
06:47and find that God is not there at all.
06:49It's a place where also they bring in other gods
06:51or they bring in LGBT or all sorts of things which God forbids.
06:54And so the church is actually not the building.
06:58It's the people.
06:58It's the people who are gathered together.
07:01And this passage in the Gospel of Matthew actually institute
07:04illustrates some of the basic principles
07:06of what the Lord wants us to know about church and church membership.
07:12First and foremost, recognize who is in charge of the church.
07:16And we have this question which Jesus asks,
07:19who do men say that I am?
07:21And who do you say that I am?
07:22And implicit in that question is a question about
07:25the identity of Jesus, the Messiah.
07:29And Jesus is actually the head of the church.
07:33You give the image of the church as a body,
07:36where Jesus is the head.
07:38Jesus is the head, not the Pope, not me, not any person,
07:44but Jesus is the head of the church.
07:46And the body is the body who is the members of the church.
07:50Now, if you have a body which is not related to the head,
07:54it's going to be dead.
07:55Because it has to get its instructions from the head.
07:57It has to be related from the head.
07:59It has to be led by the head into what it wants, what it does.
08:03So it's not a, the body can't be separated from the head.
08:08It must be in tune with the head of the church.
08:11And Jesus Christ is the head of the church.
08:14Ephesians says Christ is the head of the church.
08:16He's also the savior of the body.
08:20And when you talk about the body,
08:22the body is talking about the people who are the members of the body of Christ.
08:28And again, if you look to Paul's letters,
08:30he says in 1 Corinthians chapter 12,
08:33about the body.
08:34He says, this is 1 Corinthians 12, verse 12.
08:37As the body is one and has many members,
08:39but all members of that body, being many, are one body,
08:42so also is Christ.
08:44For as by one spirit we are all baptized into one body,
08:47whether Jews or Greeks,
08:48whether slaves or free,
08:49all have been made to drink into one spirit.
08:53And in fact, the body is not one member, but many.
08:56If the foot should say, I'm not the hand,
08:57I'm not of the body.
08:59I'm not of the body.
09:00Is it therefore not of the body?
09:01If the ear should say, I'm not of the eye,
09:03but I'm not of the body.
09:05Is it therefore not of the body?
09:07If the whole body were an eye,
09:08where will be the hearing?
09:09If the whole were hearing,
09:10where will be the smelling?
09:12But now God has set the members,
09:13each one of them, in the body,
09:14just as he pleased,
09:16and they were all one member.
09:18And if they were all one member,
09:21where would the body be?
09:23So Paul's saying that there are differences.
09:24You've got differences in your body,
09:27of the eye, the ear, the hand, everything.
09:30And he says that that is a picture,
09:31if you like, of the body of Christ.
09:33He wants it to work together in the body of Christ
09:35to build up the church,
09:36to be the manifestation of the life of Jesus Christ
09:40here on the earth.
09:42And born-again Christians are all members of the body.
09:46In order to function in the body,
09:49we need to be in relationship
09:51and in submission, actually,
09:53to the head of the body,
09:53who is Jesus Christ.
09:54So looking at this passage,
09:58Jesus lays down a few points
09:59to help us to understand this.
10:02If Jesus is the head of the body,
10:06who is he?
10:08So he asks for this question.
10:09He asks this question,
10:10who do men say that I am?
10:12Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?
10:15So remember, this is before the cross,
10:16this is before the resurrection.
10:17He's asking the disciples,
10:20okay, I'm going around,
10:21I'm doing all these things,
10:22and you get in touch with the people.
10:24What are they saying about me?
10:26Who do they say that I am?
10:28Obviously, they're recognizing
10:29that Jesus is someone a bit special.
10:31He's going around doing miracles.
10:33He's going around giving teaching,
10:34which is unlike anything they've heard before.
10:36They're recognizing there's something
10:37unique and different about this man.
10:39He's not just another rabbi who's come along.
10:43He's just someone who is teaching things
10:45which they've heard before.
10:46He's teaching them something new,
10:47and he's doing things which are new.
10:49He's doing things which are supernatural.
10:51And they're asking the question,
10:52who do men say that I am?
10:55Come up with a few answers.
10:57You're John the Baptist.
10:58You're Elijah.
10:59You're Jeremiah.
11:00You're one of the prophets.
11:02Who are they?
11:02They're all significant people from the past.
11:05People who are influential,
11:07people who had a ministry.
11:09You're saying perhaps you're like them,
11:10or you're even a reincarnation of them.
11:13We don't believe in reincarnation,
11:15but that's kind of the idea,
11:16that there's something about you
11:17which is in line with these people.
11:21And today, you can ask people,
11:22who do say Jesus is?
11:24You come up with different answers.
11:26The Islam will say that he's one of the prophets.
11:31Hindus in the New Age will say he's an avatar,
11:33one of the avatars,
11:34a manifestation of the deity on earth.
11:35And the nominal church will say he's a great teacher,
11:40he's a great example.
11:42Now, all those things are partially true.
11:44But if you just stay there,
11:49you miss the whole truth
11:50and you don't know God in spirit and truth
11:52and you don't know Jesus and salvation.
11:56And one of the things which is a problem in the world
11:58is actually that you have partial truth
11:59is a big barrier to understanding the full truth.
12:02You get part of the message,
12:05but you don't get the whole message,
12:07and so you miss the real message.
12:09That's the reason actually why religious people
12:11are often so hard to bring to Jesus,
12:12because they have all kinds of ideas about God,
12:14some of which are true,
12:16but many of them which are not true.
12:18And the things which are not true
12:19actually prevent them from coming to the truth
12:20which is only to be found in Jesus Christ.
12:26Now, we come to those propositions,
12:27he is a prophet.
12:29The prophet speaks the message of God to the people.
12:31Even he's the prophesied prophet,
12:35like unto Moses of Deuteronomy chapter 18.
12:38But he's much more than a prophet.
12:41He is a manifestation of deity,
12:44but he's much more than an avatar.
12:45If you know what an avatar is,
12:46and the Hindu idea is that
12:47there are certain manifestations of God
12:49which come at time to time.
12:51Jesus could have been one of them.
12:53And in the New Age idea,
12:54you're going to have another avatar
12:55that's going to come in our time.
12:56He's going to be the next kind of manifestation of God.
12:59Well, there's going to be another manifestation of Jesus Christ,
13:03but he's the same Jesus,
13:05actually coming in a different form
13:06when he comes a second time,
13:07but it's the same Jesus.
13:09Not a different one.
13:10And there's only one manifestation,
13:12true manifestation of God in that sense,
13:14which is the Lord Jesus Christ is unique.
13:16Is he a great teacher?
13:19Is he our example?
13:21Yes, he is.
13:22But he's much more than this.
13:24To properly understand how to apply his teaching
13:26to our lives and truly follow him,
13:29we have to come to the next verse,
13:31which is the revelation of God,
13:33which is given to Peter.
13:36Jesus says to Peter,
13:37who do you say that I am?
13:39And Peter says,
13:40you're the Messiah,
13:41the son of the living God.
13:42This is the full picture.
13:45You are the Messiah.
13:46You are the anointed one.
13:48A unique person who's come from God
13:50to fulfill the promises given to the fathers
13:52and the prophets of Israel.
13:54The one coming to redeem us from the curse of sin,
13:57to bring us new birth and the knowledge of God.
14:00You're the son of the living God.
14:03You're related to God.
14:04You're part of God.
14:05Now, this is another issue.
14:07I'm not going to go into the details
14:08of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
14:09but there is an implication here
14:11that Jesus is more than God.
14:13He is more than man.
14:14He is God with us,
14:16Son of God.
14:18Also, he's the son of the living God.
14:21The living God.
14:22God's not dead.
14:23God is alive.
14:25He's come to fulfill the prophecy
14:27of the suffering servant of Isaiah 53,
14:29to be despised and rejected,
14:31to be put to death,
14:32to bear the sins of the world,
14:33then rise again from the dead.
14:36At this point,
14:36the disciples didn't understand the message fully.
14:38That's why Jesus says to them later on,
14:41don't spread this message.
14:43And Peter does get it wrong later on
14:44and gets rejected.
14:45But at this point,
14:46Peter has had the revelation.
14:48He's understood who Jesus is.
14:51Still got a way to go,
14:52but he's being trained by the Lord
14:54for his later mission to spread the gospel
14:56after the resurrection.
14:58He understands that he's the son of the living God.
15:00He's the son of God,
15:02God who's alive
15:03and is living
15:06and is eternal.
15:09He's the God who is,
15:10man who is God dwelling with us.
15:13And he's also able to give us eternal life.
15:16Interesting,
15:16we go to John chapter 7,
15:18John chapter 6,
15:19verse 68.
15:20Peter actually repeats this statement in John 6
15:22when people are going away from Jesus
15:25and Jesus says to him,
15:28are you going to go away as well?
15:30And Peter answered him,
15:31Lord,
15:31to whom shall we go?
15:32You have the words of eternal life.
15:34We've come to believe
15:36and know that you are the Christ,
15:38the Messiah,
15:39the son of the living God.
15:41You have the words of eternal life.
15:43He's come to recognize
15:44that Jesus is the one
15:45who's going to give you eternal life.
15:47You're unique.
15:47I'm not going to go away from you
15:48no matter what other people go away.
15:50I'm staying with you.
15:52And that should be our attitude as well.
15:54People may come and they may go,
15:56but God wants us to stay with him
15:57because he has the words of eternal life.
16:00And if we're within him,
16:01nothing can separate us
16:02from the love of God,
16:04which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
16:07And those who recognize him
16:07as the son of God
16:08recognize that he is unique.
16:10He's the savior,
16:11the Messiah,
16:12the only one who can give us eternal life.
16:15Those who understand and believe this
16:16will not depart
16:17no matter what happens to them in this life.
16:20Also understand that he's the one way
16:22to receive salvation.
16:23After the resurrection,
16:25Peter was going to stand up
16:27and preach this gospel.
16:29We have an interesting incident
16:30in Acts chapter 4
16:31when he's just done
16:32that amazing miracle
16:33on the lame man
16:35at the beautiful gate
16:36in the temple.
16:38And he's hauled up
16:39before the Sanhedrin
16:40to give account for himself.
16:43And he says in Acts chapter 4,
16:45if we this day,
16:47Acts chapter 4 verse 10 this is,
16:49if we this day have judged
16:51for a good deed
16:52done to a helpless man
16:53by what means he's been made well,
16:55let it be known to you all
16:56and to all the people of Israel
16:58that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
17:00whom you crucified,
17:01God is raised from the dead.
17:03By him,
17:04this man stands here
17:05before you whole.
17:06This is the stone
17:07which was rejected by you,
17:09builders,
17:09which has become
17:10the chief cornerstone.
17:12Nor is there salvation
17:13in any other.
17:14There is no other name
17:15given under heaven
17:15given among men
17:17by which we must be saved.
17:18No other name
17:21given under heaven
17:21by which we must be saved
17:23but the name of Jesus.
17:25And that's the foundation
17:26of the true Christian church.
17:28If it departs from this,
17:30as much of the visible church
17:32has done in our time,
17:34it's a church,
17:35a building,
17:36an institution only,
17:38but it's not an ecclesia.
17:40It's not a meeting together
17:41of the body of Messiah.
17:43And God is actually not there.
17:44And this is the only foundation
17:48you can build upon.
17:49Paul writing in Corinthians,
17:51he says,
17:51according to the grace of God
17:52which was given to me
17:54as a wise master builder,
17:56I've laid the foundation
17:57and another builds on it.
17:59But let each one take heed
18:00how he builds on it.
18:02For no other foundation
18:03can anyone lay
18:04than that which is laid,
18:05which is Jesus Christ.
18:08Absolute statement there
18:09that there's no other foundation
18:10you can lay the church upon
18:11apart from Jesus Christ.
18:13He is the living God.
18:181 Timothy chapter 3, verse 15,
18:20another foundational verse
18:23on this subject.
18:24He says,
18:24I know,
18:25Paul writes,
18:27I write so that you may know
18:28how you ought to conduct yourself
18:29in the house of God
18:30which is the church
18:31of the living God,
18:33the pillar and the ground of truth.
18:36Again, you've got the church
18:37of the living God.
18:39The living God.
18:40I was thinking about this
18:41this morning
18:41and I just thought
18:42that something living
18:43is growing
18:44and it's flexible.
18:47It's not rigid
18:48and inflexible.
18:51Human body grows.
18:52It develops from being a baby.
18:54Just had somebody
18:54bring you up a little baby.
18:57That little baby
18:57is not going to remain
18:58a little baby.
18:59It's going to grow.
19:00All of us once were little babies
19:03and baby will grow
19:05from being a child
19:06to being an adolescent.
19:08Go through puberty.
19:09Become an adult.
19:10Become a male and a female.
19:13And the point of the church
19:14is it should grow.
19:15It should become
19:15more like Jesus
19:21but it should become
19:22growing spiritually as well.
19:24And you can have a church
19:26which has true doctrine
19:27and become inflexible.
19:29Become a rigid structure
19:31which can't change
19:32and can't adapt to
19:33and resist the work
19:35of the Holy Spirit.
19:36And we could become
19:37that quite easily.
19:38God wants us to move
19:39into the Holy Spirit
19:41more into the gifts
19:42of the Holy Spirit
19:42into what God has to give us
19:44by the Holy Spirit
19:45into the time
19:46of which we're living in.
19:47And I was thinking also
19:50that the human body
19:51only changes
19:55according to its basic DNA.
19:59Okay, so you can change.
20:00Your body is going to change
20:02from being a baby
20:02to an adult
20:03but the basic DNA
20:05which was programmed
20:06into that baby
20:06is still the same.
20:07It doesn't change
20:08its structure.
20:10I thought that applies
20:11to the church as well.
20:12God wants us to be flexible
20:13to adapt to
20:14have the Holy Spirit
20:15dwelling within us
20:16but he doesn't want
20:17to change the basic DNA
20:18which he's programmed
20:19into the church
20:20through the Apostles' Doctrine,
20:22through the teachings
20:23of the New Testament,
20:25through our understanding
20:26of the death
20:26and resurrection
20:27of Jesus Christ.
20:30The human body
20:31only changes
20:32according to its DNA
20:35basically.
20:36It doesn't develop
20:37another head
20:38or another arm
20:38or another leg
20:39in which case
20:39it would be freakish.
20:45And from conception
20:46to death
20:47all the changes
20:48in our body
20:48come in line
20:49with the nature
20:50which has been
20:50programmed into it
20:51at its conception.
20:54So I think that
20:54gives us a picture
20:55actually if you like
20:56of how God wants
20:56to move in the church.
20:57He doesn't want it
20:58to be rigid
20:59and inflexible.
21:00He wants it to be
21:01open to adapt
21:03to change
21:03to the work
21:04of the Holy Spirit
21:05to the circumstances
21:06we find ourselves in.
21:07He doesn't want us
21:08to change the basic DNA
21:09of the church.
21:10That can't change.
21:12If you do that
21:12then you do end up
21:13putting another head on it
21:14which is what the
21:14Roman Catholic Church
21:15has done
21:15and it becomes
21:17a body
21:18which is no longer
21:19the true body
21:20of Jesus Christ.
21:22So the church
21:23has to be flexible
21:24it has to be
21:25willing to change
21:25by the work
21:27of the Holy Spirit
21:27but doesn't want
21:28to change
21:28the basic DNA
21:29the basic things
21:30which are programmed
21:31into it.
21:32I think that's
21:33something which
21:33we need wisdom
21:35from the spirit
21:35to know how to
21:36understand
21:36how to put
21:37into practice.
21:38if the body
21:46does change
21:47and has
21:47if it were
21:48to produce
21:49another head
21:49it would be
21:50freakish
21:50but also
21:52if it remains
21:53a baby
21:54and doesn't grow up
21:55then that's also
21:56not what it wants.
21:57So God wants us
21:57to be open
21:58to the work
21:59of the spirit
22:00to change
22:00according to his plan
22:01according to his will
22:02according to what
22:03he gives to us.
22:03Okay so coming back
22:08to the revelation
22:09given to Peter
22:09he goes on to say
22:11that he is the one
22:12who's going to open
22:13the keys of the
22:14kingdom of heaven
22:14and he's the one
22:16upon whom
22:17the church
22:18is going to be built.
22:21Also says that
22:22what he has just
22:23confessed
22:23that Jesus Christ
22:24is the son
22:25of the living God
22:26is a revelation
22:27which is given to him
22:28revelation given
22:30not by intellectual
22:31understanding
22:32if you like
22:32it doesn't mean
22:34to say we don't
22:35need intellectual
22:36understanding
22:36but we need
22:38more than just
22:39head knowledge
22:41and understanding
22:42we need to have
22:42a personal
22:43relationship with God
22:44through Jesus
22:44the Messiah
22:45and we need
22:48revelation from God
22:49each one
22:50ourselves
22:51we can't work
22:52it all out
22:53just by our own
22:54minds
22:55our minds are finite
22:56they're conditioned
22:57by the world's
22:59thinking and philosophy
22:59we need the Lord
23:01to reveal the truth
23:02to us
23:02and if you struggle
23:05in this area
23:05ask the Lord
23:06personally
23:07to reveal things
23:08to you
23:08ask him to
23:09make it clear
23:10to you
23:11seek and you
23:12shall find
23:13knock and the
23:13door shall be
23:14opened unto you
23:15preacher can
23:17explain to you
23:18the gospel
23:19how to know God
23:20to the best of
23:21our ability
23:21but you have to
23:22put it into
23:22practice yourself
23:23you have to come
23:24to that personal
23:25revelation
23:25that understanding
23:26through your own
23:28relationship

26:24actually have to do
26:25with the Lord
26:26himself who opens
26:27up the kingdom

26:29have a role
26:29in preaching

26:31he was actually
26:31the first one
26:32to preach the gospel
26:32to the Jews
26:33on the day of
26:34Pentecost
26:34and to the Gentiles
26:36to Cornelius
26:37and his household
26:37in Acts chapter 10
26:39and he did
