Israel has to stand against a world which is increasingly not just anti-Israel but also anti-Semitic and anti-Jewish and Israel has the right to defend itself, Israel has a right to also stand against the pressure which is coming upon the world to accept a Palestinian state, a world that doesn’t understand that a Palestinian state will be used as a springboard to attack Israel and to attempt to destroy it. 00:00:03and also have more understanding of your purposes for us and for Israel.

00:00:10We pray in the name of the Lord Jesus. Amen.

00:00:18So if you were here last week, we had Steve Mouts

00:00:21cheering about his new book, Why Us?

00:00:25The Jewish Question.

00:00:26One of the themes he brought out of that talk was the need for Christians to stand by Israel,

00:00:34opposition to the anti-Israel spirit and the anti-Semitism which is around us.

00:00:39And he gave the view generally that Bible-believing Christians should have a positive attitude towards Israel

00:00:44and said a lot of good things about Israel and the Jewish people.

00:00:49It did lead to a comment on our website following the live streaming of the talk

00:00:53regarding the present state of Israel from a Messianic believer who has made Aliyah

00:00:59and has actually become somewhat disillusioned after living in Israel.

00:01:03And she questioned whether we should give unconditional support for Israel.

00:01:08She spoke of anti-biblical elements in Israel,

00:01:12mentioned the event which took place on October the 7th,

00:01:15which was the terrible attack on Israel,

00:01:17but it was actually an attack on the Nova Festival

00:01:20where young people were dancing to techno music under images of Buddha,

00:01:25therefore not what God wants.

00:01:28Also spoke about discrimination against Messianic Jews and opposition from the Orthodox.

00:01:34And a comment I made was actually about some of the ways in which the settlers treat the Arabs in the West Bank,

00:01:40which is not exactly according to Torah.

00:01:42So everything in Israel is not wonderful and beautiful.

00:01:46And we have to come to terms with that.

00:01:48And I want to say a little bit about that.

00:01:50Of course, it's not as bad as the opposition says.

00:01:53And we live in a time when there is huge opposition to Israel

00:01:55and you have all the crowds on the streets screaming death to the IDF

00:01:59and all that kind of stuff.

00:02:00And a spirit of hostility to Israel, which is way out of order

00:02:06and which misses the point that Israel has to defend itself against people who want to destroy it.

00:02:11And Israel has to stand against, in a world which is increasingly not just anti-Israel,

00:02:19but also anti-Semitic and anti-Jewish.

00:02:22And Israel has the right to defend itself.

00:02:25And Israel has the right to stand also against the pressure which is coming upon the world

00:02:29to accept a Palestinian state

00:02:31when they don't understand the Palestinian state

00:02:33will be used as a springboard to attack Israel and to destroy it.

00:02:37If you want to know more about that,

00:02:38in the latest edition of Light for Last Days,

00:02:40I've given an article speaking about that.

00:02:45And I want to just sort of give a kind of hopefully balanced view on this.

00:02:49And we're also going to look at the book of Nehemiah,

00:02:52which gives a interesting perception on the restoration of Israel.

00:02:59And of course, the restoration of Israel is not just a physical return of the Jews to the land,

00:03:03but God is also aiming at a restoration of the spirit

00:03:07so that they're in the right relationship with God.

00:03:11And, you know, I've been reading through Steve's book last week

00:03:14and he makes a good case for standing with Israel.

00:03:17It's written with humor and insight.

00:03:20Insight into the forces of opposition.

00:03:24And one of the points which he makes, which I've also made,

00:03:26is that the people who attack Israel and want to destroy Israel,

00:03:28when you look at them, they're also one who attack and destroy Christianity and the church,

00:03:33particularly the far left, allied with the Islamic fundamentalists,

00:03:37both of whom have an anti-Christian as well as an anti-Israel agenda.

00:03:42And if we believe that Israel has a right to exist, as we do,

00:03:45based on our reading of the Bible,

00:03:47then we have to have biblical reasons for believing this.

00:03:51We also have to have a view which includes backing Israel in its defense of itself.

00:04:00So Israel has a right to have an IDF, an Israel defense force.

00:04:04Notice it's not an Israel attack force.

00:04:07Israel's army is there to defend it against people who want to destroy it.

00:04:10If they wanted to live in peace with Israel, Israel would live in peace with them.

00:04:15George Amir once said,

00:04:16if the Arabs would lay down their weapons, there would be no more war.

00:04:20If the Jews would lay down their weapons, there'd be no more Israel.

00:04:25Work that one up.

00:04:26And we can see that Israel is in a very difficult position

00:04:29because of this situation which they're in.

00:04:33And in the end, the answer is God.

00:04:38And yet they're not there yet.

00:04:40And I had a few thoughts about this during the week

00:04:42because I was not only reading Steve's book,

00:04:45I was also reading the Bible.

00:04:47And my Bible reading was in Ezra and Nehemiah.

00:04:51And I found there were certain interesting things which you can see there

00:04:54because if you know the Bible, you know that Ezra and Nehemiah are the prophets,

00:04:57not the prophets, they're the historical writings

00:04:59which deal with the restoration of Israel after they'd returned from Babylon.

00:05:04And we're going to look at that a little bit later.

00:05:08But as we're getting into this, a little bit of intro.

00:05:10One of the things you have to recognize as you look at modern Israel

00:05:13is that modern Israel was not founded as a religious state.

00:05:18If you look at the entrance of Israel into the promised land in the time of Moses,

00:05:23Moses prepared them by reading from the book of Deuteronomy

00:05:25and giving them a basis on the Torah.

00:05:29What we're going to look at in Ezra and Nehemiah

00:05:31is that God brought the people back

00:05:33and he gave them a basis to rebuild their state

00:05:36on the values of the Torah, on the Bible.

00:05:39Modern Israel, that didn't happen.

00:05:42In fact, most of the founders of Israel, modern Israel,

00:05:45were the early Zionists, were either atheist or agnostic.

00:05:49Hetzel was not a religious Jew.

00:05:52And many of the founders were not religious Jews.

00:05:54In fact, if you look at...

00:05:56Can you put the slides up?

00:05:59The Ben-Gurion one.

00:06:01That's... Yeah.

00:06:02So this was the founding of Israel on the 28th...

00:06:06On the 14th of May in 1948.

00:06:13Reading out the Declaration of Independence

00:06:15and setting the stage for the founding of the State of Israel.

00:06:21A little bit of interesting background to that date.

00:06:23They read the Declaration of Independence.

00:06:26You can look up the Declaration of Independence on the website and read it.

00:06:31Interesting document.

00:06:32Speaks about values upon which Israel was born.

00:06:36One of the interesting things is there's a big debate

00:06:38before it took place about including the name of God.

00:06:41The religious wanted it to be signed in the name of Almighty God.

00:06:47But the secular Zionists, socialist Zionists called Mapam, they objected.

00:06:53And Ben-Gurion had this big argument between the secular who wanted to not have God's name in it

00:06:58and the religious who wanted to have the name of God in it.

00:07:01So he came up with a compromise.

00:07:03He said that the document should be signed in the name of Sur Israel,

00:07:07which means the Rock of Israel,

00:07:09which is in fact one of the names given to God in the book of Deuteronomy.

00:07:14But he said if you consider Sur Israel to mean God,

00:07:17that's what it means.

00:07:19If you consider Sur Israel to mean the people of Israel

00:07:22and the traditions of Israel and the land of Israel,

00:07:24then you can say that's what it means.

00:07:27But stop arguing because you've got to sign this document by today

00:07:29and if we don't then we're going to have a problem with the declaration of Israel on May the 14th.

00:07:34So that's how he made this compromise.

00:07:35And in the end it says, in the name of Sur Israel.

00:07:39And he said you can, I'll leave that open to you,

00:07:40what you actually think it means.

00:07:43If you look at English translations it does say in the name of Almighty God.

00:07:46But the Hebrew doesn't actually say that.

00:07:48I tell you that story because it's an interesting kind of insight

00:07:51into the founding of the state of Israel.

00:07:53There's a question mark even whether in the foundation document

00:07:55it should have the name of God.

00:07:59And if you look at it today,

00:08:01probably about 40 to 50 percent, 40 to 50, 45 percent of Israelis

00:08:06define themselves as either secular or cultural Jews.

00:08:11They may keep some of the traditions like Passover,

00:08:14but not out of religious conviction,

00:08:15just as a way of divining their Jewish identity.

00:08:20So that is the situation in modern Israel.

00:08:23During the last week I also watched this film which we plan to show here

00:08:28on the 22nd of February called The Israel Dilemma.

00:08:32This actually shows the connection between the Bible and the history of Israel.

00:08:36It shows some of the archaeological and historical discoveries

00:08:39which have been made which actually back up the authenticity of the biblical account.

00:08:44It actually goes only up to the return from Babylon,

00:08:47so it doesn't deal with modern Israel, it deals with biblical Israel.

00:08:49But it shows that there is a connection which goes back in history,

00:08:54which is also part of the basis on which modern Israel claims its right to exist.

00:09:01It features Ben-Gurion and Netanyahu

00:09:04declaring their connection between the Bible and the land of Israel

00:09:08as Israel's right to exist.

00:09:10It actually goes back to the events in 1936 when having signed the Balfour Declaration

00:09:19in which the British said that they viewed the right of the Jews to have a state in Israel

00:09:25or a land in Israel.

00:09:29By 1936 they were beginning to get cold feet on this

00:09:31because the Arabs were rejecting and there was something called the Peel Commission

00:09:35in which they were really rowing back on the Balfour Declaration

00:09:42and the idea of a Jewish homeland in Palestine

00:09:45because of Arab opposition to the Jewish presence.

00:09:49And so they quizzed Ben-Gurion and Ben-Gurion said

00:09:51simply the Bible is our mandate for our existence.

00:09:55So he put the Bible as the reason why they should have the land.

00:10:00Now it's interesting because Ben-Gurion himself was not personally religious

00:10:04in the traditional orthodox sense.

00:10:07Widely considered as an atheist or an agnostic.

00:10:12Next one.

00:10:13We went round his house in Tel Aviv

00:10:16and also went to the place he retired to in Sdeboka,

00:10:21a kibbutz in the Negev south of Beersheba.

00:10:24And one of the interesting things were this is his bedroom

00:10:28and he's got a pile of books there.

00:10:31When we went there the only book on this bedside was the Bible.

00:10:35And it's believed that he had a Bible continually on his bedside table.

00:10:40He also said the place was full of books so look at the next one.

00:10:45Yep, so everywhere you went in this house

00:10:49it was every shelf, every room had bookshelves in it.

00:10:53And he was obviously a very prolific reader.

00:10:58He had books on philosophy, on religion.

00:11:01He was deeply revered Jewish history, culture and the Bible

00:11:04as a foundational national text.

00:11:07But he also saw it just as that,

00:11:09as a text which should be used to base the Bible on,

00:11:14not something which you believe in as given by God.

00:11:17In fact, he didn't believe the Torah was divinely revealed

00:11:20and he certainly didn't keep all of the commandments in the Torah.

00:11:25And he viewed Judaism as primarily a national culture

00:11:29and the Bible as a kind of manifesto or mandate

00:11:32for the Jewish people's return to the land of Israel,

00:11:35which was typical of most of the early Zionist leaders.

00:11:39In fact, you look at them, many of them were secular,

00:11:41had a socialist worldview, many of them.

00:11:44And also, of course, many Jewish people at this time

00:11:48questioned God after the Holocaust

00:11:49and said, if God is real, why didn't God

00:11:51allow these things to happen to us as a people?

00:11:55So you have this kind of foundation.

00:11:59Come on to Netanyahu.

00:12:02Just going to show you a short clip

00:12:03which Netanyahu has asked about his faith.

00:12:07Get that one up mainly, Tony?

00:12:09Going to work.

00:12:10Going to work.

00:12:14Do you describe yourself as a person of faith?

00:12:22If you don't have faith,

00:12:24you're not going to be,

00:12:26you're not going to sustain the turbulence of politics.

00:12:30You know, politics is a great profession,

00:12:33but it's fraught with a lot of difficult passages,

00:12:36not only for me, but especially for my wife,

00:12:39my two boys.

00:12:41And without their faith and their support,

00:12:43I couldn't be doing what I'm doing.

00:12:45With your faith, how does it influence

00:12:46your leadership and your vision for Israel?

00:12:49Well, it's been more than a part of my life.

00:12:51It's been the essence because

00:12:52when we do everything we're doing there,

00:12:54why are we there?

00:12:55We have to be there in the land of Israel,

00:12:57in the land of the Bible,

00:12:58in the land of our ancestors.

00:13:00Prophets said,

00:13:01after the destruction of our temples,

00:13:03you shall come back.

00:13:04You shall engather the exiles.

00:13:07You shall rebuild your life

00:13:08and your future.

00:13:09And these are not empty words.

00:13:11If you're not filled with a deeper mission,

00:13:15there's no point.

00:13:17Do you describe yourself as a person of faith?

00:13:19If you don't have faith.

00:13:21Okay, you get the point there,

00:13:23what he's saying.

00:13:23He says that

00:13:24we Jews have to be there

00:13:29in the land of the Bible,

00:13:30in the land of Israel,

00:13:31in the land of our ancestors.

00:13:33Prophets said,

00:13:34after the destruction of our temples,

00:13:35you should come back,

00:13:37engather the exiles,

00:13:39rebuild your life and your future.

00:13:41These are not empty words.

00:13:43So Netanyahu is actually saying there

00:13:45that there is a connection

00:13:46between what the prophet said

00:13:47and the restoration of Israel.

00:13:48Of course, that is contested

00:13:52by most of the world

00:13:54because most of the world

00:13:56doesn't believe the Bible.

00:13:59Whether you're Muslims

00:14:00or leftists or atheists,

00:14:03huge numbers of people in the world

00:14:05would reject that

00:14:07as a reason for Israel being there.

00:14:11And many people who do believe the Bible

00:14:12actually have questions about it.

00:14:14There are some Jewish groups.

00:14:15If you go to anti-Israel demonstrations,

00:14:18which I do sometimes

00:14:18not to join in with them

00:14:19but to talk to the opposition

00:14:21or to stand with Israel,

00:14:23you'll find there's always

00:14:24a group of Orthodox Jews there

00:14:25who are from the Satmar group

00:14:27who don't believe

00:14:28that Israel should exist

00:14:29because they say that

00:14:30the state of Israel

00:14:31has come about

00:14:32before the Messiah comes.

00:14:34Only the Messiah can bring

00:14:35the Jews back to Israel

00:14:36and only the Messiah

00:14:37can rebuild Israel again.

00:14:42And that was a view

00:14:42which actually was held

00:14:43by many rabbis

00:14:44actually at the time of Herzl

00:14:45at the time of the

00:14:46beginnings of the Zionist movement.

00:14:53And even today,

00:14:54if you go into Jerusalem,

00:14:55there's an area called Meir Shurim.

00:14:57Anybody been to Meir Shurim?

00:14:59Yeah, you go to Meir Shurim.

00:15:00It's the ultra-Orthodox quarter.

00:15:02Some of the Jews there

00:15:03are from the Netarii Carter group

00:15:05who again don't believe

00:15:06in the modern state of Israel.

00:15:08And when I went there myself,

00:15:11I was amazed to see on the wall

00:15:13a slogan which said,

00:15:15Judaism and Zionism are incompatible.

00:15:19So in the middle of Jerusalem,

00:15:21they're saying that

00:15:22Judaism is incompatible with Zionism.

00:15:24And that was a traditional

00:15:26Orthodox Jewish view.

00:15:28Probably not Orthodox,

00:15:29most of the Orthodox Jews around here

00:15:31wouldn't hold to that view.

00:15:32But that is a view

00:15:33which was held by rabbis

00:15:35when Herzl began to

00:15:37put forward the idea.

00:15:38So a conflict between the Jewish idea.

00:15:41And the Jewish idea

00:15:41was that the Messiah would come first.

00:15:44He would then bring the Jews

00:15:45back to Israel,

00:15:46restore the land of Israel

00:15:47and create a world of peace

00:15:48in which Israel would dwell

00:15:50in the center of the world

00:15:52and the Messiah would reign.

00:15:56Pretty similar to our view

00:15:57of the second coming of Jesus,

00:15:58but we don't believe

00:15:59that before the second coming

00:16:00that's how it's going to be.

00:16:03And it could become

00:16:03a lot of Christians

00:16:04that don't believe this.

00:16:05A lot of Christians would say that

00:16:06now that the Messiah

00:16:09has come in the person of Jesus,

00:16:10the Messiah,

00:16:11he's replaced the covenant

00:16:12with Israel

00:16:12and he's made a new covenant

00:16:14with all of humanity

00:16:15and all of this stuff

00:16:16about Israel

00:16:17and the return is past,

00:16:19it's over,

00:16:20the Jews have blown it

00:16:21and now it's all

00:16:22with the church

00:16:23and the church has replaced Israel.

00:16:25Very common view

00:16:26amongst evangelical Christians.

00:16:28And if you go out

00:16:28and share our message,

00:16:29often you find opposition

00:16:30to them for this reason.

00:16:35And even some

00:16:37who do believe

00:16:38what we believe

00:16:38would say that

00:16:39although Israel is back

00:16:40in the land,

00:16:41there's something missing

00:16:41in modern Israel,

00:16:43something which is not there

00:16:45and I would say that as well,

00:16:46something which is yet to come,

00:16:48which relates to Yeshua

00:16:49and having the right foundation,

00:16:52which is on Yeshua,

00:16:54HaMashiach,

00:16:54Jesus the Messiah.

00:16:56So we have a big contestant

00:16:57about the interpretation

00:16:58of the Bible.

00:16:59You can say that Israel

00:17:00is back in the land

00:17:01because of the Bible

00:17:02but how do you interpret

00:17:03the Bible?

00:17:04How do you interpret it

00:17:05in the light of what

00:17:06is taking place right now?

00:17:11So let's just have a look

00:17:12at one or two foundational passages

00:17:14before we get into

00:17:15the Nehemiah bit.

00:17:16First of all,

00:17:19one of the things

00:17:19you have to recognise

00:17:20and we want another

00:17:21to put up, Danny.

00:17:24Oh, is it?

00:17:25Perhaps it's not on there.

00:17:26Are there any Bible verses

00:17:27on there?

00:17:28No, okay,

00:17:28that didn't come through.

00:17:29Never mind.

00:17:30You'll just have to read it yourself.

00:17:32I'll read it to you

00:17:33and you can believe me

00:17:33I'm telling you the truth.

00:17:36There are different covenants

00:17:37in the Old Testament

00:17:38concerning Israel.

00:17:39One is the covenant

00:17:40which was made with Abraham.

00:17:42Go to Genesis chapter 15,

00:17:44you find that God made a covenant

00:17:45with Abraham

00:17:46that he'd have a multitude

00:17:47of descendants,

00:17:48many of the stars in heaven

00:17:49and the sand on the seashore.

00:17:52He also told him

00:17:52he'd have the covenant deeds,

00:17:54if you like,

00:17:54of the promised land,

00:17:55the land upon which

00:17:56he was a stranger,

00:17:57the land of Canaan.

00:17:59And that covenant

00:17:59was sealed by God himself,

00:18:01not by Abraham.

00:18:02So it was an unconditional covenant.

00:18:05And God repeated that

00:18:06in Genesis chapter 17,

00:18:08which I'm going to read from now.

00:18:09Genesis 17, verse 4.

00:18:13God says,

00:18:13As for me,

00:18:14behold,

00:18:14my covenant is with you.

00:18:16You should be a father

00:18:16of many nations.

00:18:17No longer shall your name

00:18:18be called Abraham,

00:18:20but your name shall be called Abraham.

00:18:22For I have made you

00:18:23a father of many nations.

00:18:25I'll make you exceedingly fruitful.

00:18:26I'll make nations of you

00:18:29and kings shall come from you.

00:18:31I will establish my covenant

00:18:32between me and you

00:18:34and your descendants

00:18:35after you

00:18:35and their generations

00:18:36for an everlasting covenant

00:18:38to be your God

00:18:39to you

00:18:40and your descendants

00:18:41after you.

00:18:42Also I give to you

00:18:43and your descendants

00:18:44after you

00:18:45the land on which

00:18:45you are a stranger

00:18:46in the land of Canaan

00:18:48as an everlasting covenant

00:18:49and I will be

00:18:50their God.

00:18:53So there are

00:18:54interesting word there

00:18:56is everlasting.

00:18:58Now you could say

00:18:58in one sense

00:18:59nothing is everlasting

00:19:00in this world

00:19:00because it's going to be

00:19:01burned up in the end.

00:19:03But the implication is

00:19:04that as long as

00:19:04this world exists,

00:19:05as long as the sun

00:19:06and the moon

00:19:06and the stars exist,

00:19:08which is a quotation

00:19:09from Jeremiah by the way,

00:19:11so long will Israel

00:19:11be a nation before me

00:19:13says the Lord.

00:19:14So God's going to

00:19:15preserve Israel

00:19:15in some form

00:19:16and preserve

00:19:17the connection

00:19:18between the land

00:19:19and the people

00:19:20and the Lord

00:19:21throughout time.

00:19:24And of course

00:19:24when Jesus comes back

00:19:25he's going to rule the world

00:19:26not from Rome

00:19:27or Moscow

00:19:29or London

00:19:30or anywhere like that

00:19:30he's going to rule the world

00:19:31from Jerusalem.

00:19:33So the whole emphasis

00:19:35in the Bible

00:19:35is on an everlasting

00:19:37a continuous covenant

00:19:38which God has

00:19:39with the people

00:19:40and the land.

00:19:41And even if they're

00:19:41out of the land

00:19:42for a while

00:19:43God is going to

00:19:44restore them

00:19:44back to that land.

00:19:47And

00:19:48Psalm 105

00:19:50says

00:19:50this in verse 7

00:19:53he says

00:19:53He is the Lord our God

00:19:55His judgments

00:19:56are in all the earth

00:19:57He remembers

00:19:57His covenant forever

00:19:58His word

00:20:00which He commanded

00:20:00for a thousand generations

00:20:02the covenant

00:20:03which He made

00:20:03with Abraham

00:20:04and His oath

00:20:05to Isaac

00:20:05and confirmed it

00:20:06to Jacob

00:20:07for a statute

00:20:07to Israel

00:20:09as an everlasting covenant

00:20:10saying to you

00:20:11I will give

00:20:11the land of Canaan

00:20:12as an allotment

00:20:13of your inheritance.

00:20:16So

00:20:16in the Psalm

00:20:17he's saying there

00:20:18that He's going to be

00:20:18a covenant

00:20:19which is going to last

00:20:19for a thousand generations

00:20:21that's a long time

00:20:22and there have been

00:20:22more than

00:20:23not less than

00:20:23a thousand generations

00:20:24between the time

00:20:25when this Psalm

00:20:26was given

00:20:26and He's saying

00:20:28that this covenant

00:20:28is going to be

00:20:29a continuing covenant

00:20:30it's not going to change

00:20:31and as I quoted

00:20:33the one I quoted

00:20:34from Jeremiah

00:20:35speaks about

00:20:35as long as the sun

00:20:36and the moon

00:20:36and the stars exist

00:20:37so long will Israel

00:20:38be a nation before me

00:20:39says the Lord.

00:20:41Interesting that

00:20:42Jeremiah one is given

00:20:43immediately after

00:20:43God gives the promise

00:20:44of the new covenant

00:20:45which is fulfilled

00:20:46in Jesus.

00:20:47So I take that

00:20:48to imply that

00:20:48after the new covenant

00:20:50is given

00:20:50so long this covenant

00:20:51with God

00:20:52between God

00:20:53and His people

00:20:54is going to remain

00:20:54in some form.

00:20:55there's another aspect

00:21:00of it

00:21:00which is conditional

00:21:01and that's the covenant

00:21:02which is made

00:21:03with Moses

00:21:04it's conditional

00:21:05on obedience

00:21:06to the Torah

00:21:06I'm going to go back

00:21:09to Exodus chapter 24

00:21:10after God is given

00:21:12the Ten Commandments

00:21:13Moses comes down

00:21:16from the mountain

00:21:16and he speaks

00:21:17to the people

00:21:18and he says

00:21:19in verse

00:21:20chapter 24

00:22:33on them

00:22:33keeping this word

00:22:34keeping this covenant

00:22:35and you could say

00:22:37that the rest of the

00:22:38working out

00:22:39of the Old Testament

00:22:40bears this out

00:22:41when Israel is obedient

00:22:43to the Lord
