And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them. And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid. And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel. And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

00:00First, read about David in 1 Samuel chapter 15.
00:03I'm going to quote from some of these passages, and I won't put them up on the board,
00:07so if you want to check your Bibles out and follow through,
00:10we're going to look at some passages from 1 Samuel in particular.
00:151 Samuel 15, you find that after Saul, Israel's first king,
00:19had proved himself to be a disappointment to God, not doing his will,
00:22God rejected Saul and his line and chose David instead.
00:30On Samuel 16, we see how God sent Samuel to go and anoint Saul's successor,
00:37and he goes to the man called Jesse, who has eight sons.
00:40He chose the eight sons of Jesse to pass before him,
00:43and each one who comes before him, he says, this isn't the right one.
00:47And he says, the Lord says to Samuel, don't look at his appearance or his physical stature,
00:52because I've refused him.
00:54The Lord does not see as man sees.
00:56Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
01:00God's looking at what you look at on the outside, how fine you might appear.
01:03He's looking at what's going on on the inside.
01:05He's looking for a man after his own heart.
01:08And when the youngest comes before him, that's David,
01:12God says, this is the one, anoint him.
01:16And Samuel anoints him.
01:17And he, as he anoints him, then the Holy Spirit comes upon him.
01:24It said in verse 13, verse 16, 13,
01:27then Samuel took the horn of the oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers,
01:30and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that time forward.
01:35Finding the Old Testament that when God anoints someone for a task,
01:38the Holy Spirit comes upon them and anoints them to do that task.
01:41The next verse says,
01:44The Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul,
01:46and a distressing spirit came upon him, and the Lord troubled him.
01:51So as the Spirit of the Lord comes upon David,
01:53the Spirit of the Lord departs from Saul,
01:55and a distressing spirit comes upon him.
01:59David then comes to Saul,
02:00and he plays the harp to him to remove the distressing spirit.
02:03And it's another interesting little detail there.
02:08I guess as he's playing the harp,
02:10and he's playing it in the spirit,
02:11and he's bringing it some kind of worship to the Lord.
02:15And one of the lessons which tells us is that as we come,
02:17we find the evil one trying to oppress us in some way.
02:22One of the ways we can resist him is by praising the Lord.
02:25Bringing our praise and worship to the Lord,
02:27especially praising the name of Jesus.
02:29In the name of Jesus, we have the victory.
02:31In the name of Jesus, demons will have to flee.
02:35So this music becomes our instrument for ministering to Saul
02:39against this distressing spirit, this evil spirit that's come upon him.
02:44And David is the one who brings it.
02:46David, who's in the Spirit, has his Holy Spirit upon him.
02:51And then we come to the most important and the most well-known story of David.
02:54We'll look at a little bit of detail.
02:57The story of David and Goliath.
02:58You know the story, probably one of the best-known stories in the Bible.
03:05Goliath, the champion of the Philistines,
03:07comes to confront the armies of Israel.
03:11And as he confronts the armies of Israel,
03:12he challenges them to send out someone to fight against him.
03:16And everyone's afraid because he's a huge giant.
03:18He's nine foot tall and he's clothed in all the armor.
03:21And everyone's afraid to go and fight with Goliath.
03:23And David goes there not to fight,
03:26but he goes there to bring some food for his brothers who are in the army.
03:30And as he comes, he hears what's happening.
03:33And David says,
03:34Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?
03:40Here again, you see the Holy Spirit is upon David
03:42and he's understanding what is going on in the spiritual realm here.
03:45This isn't just a physical battle.
03:47Here's somebody who's coming in the name of false gods to confront the true God.
03:51And David's on the side of the true God.
03:54So he says, What's this guy doing?
03:55He's confronting the armies of the living God.
03:57Surely we can fight against him because we are the armies of the living God.
04:01We've got God on our side.
04:03And truly they did have God on their side because God had chosen Israel.
04:06And the Philistines were coming to oppress them
04:09and to drive them out of the land if possible.
04:12So David comes and he volunteers to go and fight against the giant.
04:19Brothers mock him and say, What are you doing here?
04:21Are you trying to upstage us and show what a big deal you are?
04:26Saul says, Okay, you can go, but you better put my armor on.
04:30And David puts Saul's armor on.
04:31The armor just inhibits him and he says it's not going to work.
04:35So he takes off the armor.
04:36He renounces the armor and he says,
04:38I'm going to trust in the Lord and his armor instead.
04:43The armor didn't fit.
04:44It's too big.
04:45It didn't fit him spiritually because he was relying on the Lord.
04:49And there's a lesson for us there as well.
04:51He puts off these things and he takes up his shepherd's weapons,
04:56his sling and his five stones.
04:58And he goes to confront the giant.
05:01And we read on then that Goliath mocks him as he comes towards him.
05:05Verse 43.
05:06So the Philistine said to David,
05:10Am I a dog that you come to me with sticks?
05:13And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
05:16And the Philistine said to David,
05:17Come to me and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field.
05:23He sees David coming and he looks fewly and feeble
05:25and he just doesn't even need weapons with him.
05:29He says, Am I a dog?
05:29You're coming to attack me?
05:31I'll just give you, curses him by his gods.
05:34And again, once he curses him by his gods,
05:36he's also bringing in now the spiritual dimension.
05:40This isn't just one man against another man.
05:42This is the one who represents the armies of the living God
05:45coming against the one who is representing the gods of the Philistines who are no gods.
05:51And so, it's not just Goliath and his armour against David.
05:58It's Goliath and his armour against the God of Israel.
06:02And David comes in the name of the Lord.
06:05He comes with a testimony to Israel and to the world.
06:08He tells them that there is a God in Israel.
06:12And we come to the verse which,
06:15up here,
06:16in verse 45.
06:17Then David said to the Philistine,
06:22You come to me with a sword and a spear and with a javelin,
06:24but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts,
06:27the God of the armies of Israel,
06:28whom you have defied.
06:30This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand
06:32and I will strike you and take your head from you.
06:35And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines
06:38to the birds of the air
06:39and the wild beasts of the earth
06:40that all the earth may know
06:42that there is a God in Israel.
06:45Then all his assembly shall know
06:46that the Lord does not save with sword and spear,
06:49for the battle is the Lord's
06:51and he will give you into our hands.
06:55It's an amazing statement of faith that, isn't it?
06:57I mean, he's not just saying that in a church building,
07:00he's saying that confronting this huge giant
07:02and saying,
07:04I'm coming to you in the name of the Lord of hosts
07:05and I'm going to cut off your head
07:06and give it to the birds.
07:09Imagine.
07:10I mean, it's sort of almost funny, isn't it?
07:12But think about,
07:14he's actually standing there saying this.
07:17He's got to really believe it, hasn't he?
07:19He's got to really believe it's going to happen
07:20because he believes in the God of Israel.
07:25He doesn't say,
07:26I'm going to deliver you into my hands.
07:28He says,
07:28the Lord is going to deliver you into my hands.
07:31So he's very bold,
07:32he's very courageous
07:33and he's bold in God.
07:34It's only God who's giving him that strength.
07:37For just in his own strength,
07:39I guess he'd be totally terrified and run away,
07:42as you and I would.
07:44But he also says that all the earth may know
07:46that there is a God in Israel.
07:48And his purpose in doing this
07:49is that the world may know
07:50that God actually exists,
07:51that there is a God.
07:53And boy, did he succeed in that.
07:56Here we are, what is it,
07:572,000, 3,000 years later,
07:59telling this story,
08:00which is probably the best known story in the Bible,
08:02one of the best known stories in the Bible.
08:04Even the unbelievers know about David and Goliath.
08:07And somehow this event,
08:09which took place,
08:11has been told over and over again.
08:13And David has shown that there is a God.
08:15There is a God.
08:15If you trust in him,
08:16he's going to give you the victory
08:17over the enemy who comes against you.
08:20It's an amazing story.
08:22And it tells you just how David trusts in the Lord.
08:25And he believes that there is a God.
08:26There really is a God
08:27who is able to defeat and overcome
08:30all the powers of darkness
08:31which come against you.
08:32And in this story you see
08:34Satan really behind Goliath
08:37coming against Israel,
08:39mocking their gods
08:40and saying that,
08:41I'm going to defeat you.
08:43You can't stand against me.
08:45And David comes in the faith,
08:47in the trust in the Lord
08:48and he comes with faith
08:50and he overcomes
08:51and he creates this wonderful victory.
