Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and spoke, saying, “Indeed we are your bone and your flesh. Also, in time past, when Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them in; and the Lord said to you, ‘You shall shepherd My people Israel, and be ruler over Israel.’” Therefore all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah. 2 Samuel 5:1-5

00:00okay let's just have a word of prayer as we come to the word of god well we thank you that we do
00:16have your word we thank you for the truth of the bible we thank you for the things we can learn
00:20from your word pray that you help me to speak and help those who are here to hear in jesus name
00:24amen okay today we're going to continue to look at some things from the life of king david david
00:34melech israel david the king of israel last time i spoke we looked at incidents from his life before
00:42he became the king particularly the most famous event the confrontation with the giant goliath
00:49when david responded to the challenge put his trust in the living god and said who is this
00:55philistine that he should defy the armies of the living god and against all the odds this little
01:00shepherd boy with his sling and his five stones killed the great giant who was threatening israel
01:05and won a great victory and showed tremendous faith and courage in doing that and then we looked at one
01:12of the low points in david's life when he was fleeing from saul and he ended up living amongst
01:17the philistines even in the camp of the enemy and at one point he even volunteers to go out and fight
01:24with the philistines against israel which seems very strange but he was in definitely in the wrong place
01:29at that time he camps at a place called ziklag and while he's away the amalekites come and capture
01:36all of his people his family his goods and take them captive and david's at the very lowest point in
01:42his life and his friends are talking about stoning him then we read that he encouraged himself in the
01:49lord and i mentioned that during the time when he was down with the philistines there's no mention of
01:54david praying at all he just seems to have gone away from god be discouraged then at that point he
01:59encourages himself in the lord and he encourages himself in the lord he goes after the amalekites he
02:05gets his family back he crosses a place called the brook besor and i mentioned the word besor in hebrew
02:11actually means good news in fact the hebrew word for the gospel today is besorah so he gets to this
02:18brook and he crosses over and he gets the good news and he gets everything back and i said there's a
02:22connection between the fact that he encourages himself in the lord so he seeks the lord and he
02:27recovers all that was lost and from that point onwards he goes from strength to strength he goes back
02:34he learns that saul has died and saul is no longer pursuing him therefore and the way is open for him
02:40to take up the role which has already been appointed to him as the king as he was anointed by king by
02:47samuel in one samuel chapter 16 and really goes back to hebron there's a long war between the house
02:56of saul and the house of david it says in the scripture that david grew stronger and stronger
03:01and the house of saul grew weaker and weaker and that in a sense is this battle between the flesh and
03:07the spirit saul was in the flesh he was not anointed he was not the one who god had chosen
03:12david was in the spirit and he was anointed by god for all his failures all his things which he did
03:18wrong he was still the one who was anointed by god and god gave him the victory over the house of saul
03:23and he was then went up to hebron where he began to reign as the king first of all in judah and you
03:32have to understand that in the time of david uh there were the tribes of israel there was a kind
03:38of division between the south and the north already and there was a david had to unite all the tribes of
03:44israel and he went to a place called hebron hebron is about 20 miles south of jerusalem in the area
03:52known as judea and it was the place where abraham was buried and sarah the cave of machpel is there
03:59it's still there to this day and it's a place which was important in israel's history and it was
04:05where he set up his kingdom to start off with and we read into samuel chapter 5 then all the tribes of
04:11israel came to david and hebron and spoke saying indeed we are your bone and your flesh also in time
04:18past when saul was king over us you were the one who led israel out and brought them in and the lord
04:23said to you you shall shepherd my people israel and be ruler over israel therefore all the elders
04:31of israel came to the king at hebron and king david made a covenant with them at hebron before the lord
04:36and they anointed david king over israel david was 30 years old when he began to reign and he reigned 40
04:43years in hebron he reigned over judah seven years and six months and in jerusalem he reigned 33 years
04:50over all israel and judah so he starts off in hebron the tribes come to him and they accept him as the
04:59king the anointed one and he reigns there for seven years and then moves up to jerusalem very significant
05:06move jerusalem was at this time in the hands of a canaanite tribe called the jebusites
05:11and david decided he was going to move up into jerusalem and we read him going on into samuel 5
05:19how he took jerusalem and the king and his men went to jerusalem against the jebusites the inhabitants
05:26of the land who spoke to david said you shall not come in here but the blind and the lame will repel
05:31you thinking david cannot come in nevertheless david took the stronghold of zion that is the city of
05:38david now david said on that day whoever climbs up by the way of the water shaft and defeats the
05:43jebusites the lame and the blind who are hated by david's soul he shall be chief and captain therefore
05:49they say the blind and the lame shall not come into the house then david dwelt in the stronghold and
05:55called this called the called it the city of david david built all around the millow and inward so david
06:01went on and became great and the lord of hosts was with him so you have this situation jerusalem if
06:08you've been there is a high city it's on a hill the valleys and behind below it and at this time it was
06:14in the hands of the jebusites who were a canaanite tribe and they were taunting david say you can't
06:20come up here you can't capture us because we've got this stronghold on this city and even the blind
06:24and the lame in our city will put you down because we've got a good situation you won't be able to
06:30take us so he took this as a kind of insult and david said yeah i'm going to take it and he
06:36speaks about the blind and the lame who are hated of his soul he means that this was an insult and
06:40i'm going to put it back and i'm going to take this city and you read here that he goes up by the
06:45water shaft and defeats the jebusites it's a very interesting little line there we're going to look
06:50at that in a moment he goes up through a water shaft he goes up through some sort of tunnel gets
06:55up into the city and takes the city of jerusalem and he makes it his capital very fateful decision
07:02we'll see in a moment why that's such a significant moment that moment something happens which is going
07:07to affect not just his immediate time but time right through history right up to our time taking
07:15jerusalem as the capital notice he said he went through the water shaft now today if you've been
07:20to jerusalem you may have visited this place which is the city of david one of the most interesting
07:27tours you can do in israel is to go in the excavations under the city of david fascinating
07:34place and one of the places you can find here is the water shaft this was the water shaft now we don't
07:42know for sure that this is the exact water shaft but we know that this exists to this day a place
07:47which you can climb up from the bottom up to the top it's there that's amazing isn't it
07:53you can go also in this place and find what the israelis have found which they say is the
07:59the palace of king david it's there in the city of david go underneath a bit further you can find
08:07hezekiah's tunnel a water course which goes from the takes the water through from the gihon spring
08:15into the pool of siloam mentioned in the book of hezekiah sorry in the book of chronicles king
08:22hezekiah built the tunnel he built it from one side to the other so he had one lot building on
08:26one side a lot building the other side they managed to meet in the middle and you can walk
08:30through this tunnel i'd walk through it you can walk through this tunnel it's about five or six
08:35inches of water and it flows through takes the water through to the gihon spring it's there it's
08:41under the city of david it's in the bible and you can also go in the city of david you can see the
08:47wall which they say is nehemiah's wall which was built sometime later why do i mention this i mention
08:53this because this confirms to you that the bible is true you can dig down under jerusalem you can find
08:59all these things which are mentioned in the bible they're all in the right place they're all at and
09:04you can date them the archaeologists can rate date them and say yes they're roughly at that time when it
09:09says it was written in the bible it's one of the signs that the bible is true the only evidences
09:13that's why the israelis are so keen on archaeology because they look at the archaeology and they say
09:18this proves that we were here uh 2500 or more years ago
09:22just do a little comparison with the city of mecca you know that mecca is the main city in
09:30islam it's mentioned in the quran i think about four times there's not much of a description of it
09:38what description there is doesn't line up with what is the modern city of mecca
09:41they've dug down under mecca when they built these big towers which they have now what did
09:48they find when they dug down under mecca nothing zero no evidence of an ancient city
09:55that makes a big question mark on the whole of the quran because the quran is based upon the
10:01muhammad living in this place called mecca and you do it do with evidence there's nothing there
10:05no evidence that even existed if you listen to jay smith who comes here he says that
10:10actually the whole story is a made-up story some 200 years later and it wasn't based upon mecca
10:15compare that with the bible compare that with jerusalem compare that with the holy land
10:19you find everything which is in place excuse me in the right place at the right time and it's
10:27evidence that the bible is true that it's based upon historical records it's not just a made-up story
10:32okay so let's go on uh
10:35the sims david then goes up and brings up the ark
10:42of god from the house of ebedon to the city of david the ark had been out of been actually
10:50traveling around had been captured by the philistines at one point then comes back to the israelites
10:54and it's taken up to jerusalem now this is very significant because david has made first of all his
11:00jerusalem his physical capital now he's making it the spiritual capital he's making it into the holy
11:07city the city which is going to be the city of god as well as the city of david
11:11and we read in the text it says so it was when those bearing the ark of the lord had gone six
11:18paces that he sacrificed oxen and fatted sheep and david danced before the lord with all his might
11:24and david was wearing a linen ephod so david and all the house of israel brought up the ark of the
11:29lord with shouting and with the sound of a trumpet now as the ark of the lord came into the city of
11:34david michael saul's daughter looked through the window and saw king david leaping and whirling
11:39before the lord and she despised him in her heart so they brought the ark of the lord and set it in
11:44its place in the midst of the tabernacle that david had erected for it then david offered burnt
11:50offerings and peace offerings before the lord and when david had finished offering burnt offerings
11:54and peace offerings he blessed the people in the name of the lord so as he's carrying this ark into
12:00the as what he's carrying there's the priests are carrying the ark into the city of jerusalem david
12:06does this dance before the lord and he's really dancing fervently uh
12:13even a text suggestion that he's actually sort of disgraced himself in some way in doing this dance
12:20and his wife looks down on him and says this is ridiculous you shouldn't be doing this you're the
12:24king of israel you should be acting in a dignified way and david says no i'm dancing before the lord
12:28because this is a hugely significant moment this is a moment when god's ark is coming into god's city
12:34and i'm going to praise and worship the lord and i don't care what you think about me because i'm doing
12:38this before the lord and the holy spirit is anointing me to do this he's not just doing it in a
12:43fleshly way the spirit is upon him and making him do this incredible dance before the lord
12:48and we read that michael is actually then barren after this so it's not the good news for michael
12:54herself so what's the significance of the ark of the covenant now in the old testament you see that
13:02the ark of the covenant was a literal ark it was made it was whether it looked like that or not we
13:09don't know but that's probably how they were carrying it but it was a box which contained
13:14three important items two tablets of the ten commandments pot of manna and aaron's rod that
13:23budded so it goes back to the history of the exodus and it was the tablets of the ten commandments
13:30which moses brought down from the mountain so very holy and very significant object and this ark
13:37represented the presence of god amongst the people of israel
13:40sign of the presence of the lord and they were the reminders also of god's provision of the
13:49commandments his provision to the people in the wilderness as he brought them out of egypt
13:53and his the rod that budded his guidance his law and all these things were showing that god was
14:00with his people they were a sign to the lord to the people of the lord's presence with them
14:06so the ark was a very significant object and as they brought them into jerusalem they were bringing
14:12it into jerusalem into the city of god which was going to be the place where god would dwell amongst
14:18his people
14:18so you have verses like in psalm 48 where it says great is the lord greatly to be praised in the city
14:28of our god in his holy mountain beautiful in elevation the joy of the whole earth is mount zion
14:34on the sides of the north so mount zion becomes a place of significance
14:39a significance not just as the capital but also as a spiritual center
14:44for the the nation and the place where god is going to dwell amongst his people
14:48so a few questions why jerusalem why didn't just stay in hebron
14:54there are some political reasons one that hebron was in the south
14:58he wanted to unify the people he wanted to have a unified nation so jerusalem would be the capital
15:03of the whole tribes of israel so it's further north it's more in the center
15:08also jerusalem was not actually at the time when he made this choice in the hands of any of the tribes
15:14of israel it was actually in the hands of the jebusites so he had to capture it from them and he
15:18made now made it the central place for the people of israel
15:23it was also very defensible because it was had on a hill with wide valleys and it was where the
15:31fortress of zion was located and also it had a continuous water supply from the gihon spring
15:38which could be accessed within the walls during a siege
15:41also had a history and it's likely that when you read in the book of genesis about
15:47abraham meeting melchizedek he comes as the king of salem king of salem king of jerusalem so there's
15:56some kind of religious significance about this place going back to ancient times so there's something
16:02significant about jerusalem and as he brought the ark of the covenant into the city it was
16:08understoring its importance and it was going to be the place of course where the temple was going to
16:13be built so you have some idea that this was not just david's idea that also that god was behind
16:20this there was some choice from god choosing this city as part of his plan
16:25basically god was going to dwell amongst the people of israel
16:30and it had passed in god's redemptive plan i can ask why did god choose jerusalem
16:36because god chose jerusalem you know we can say why did god do this why did god do that
16:42actually we just don't have the right to ask god this thing god does what he wants
16:48so god did choose jerusalem it's clear it says out in the bible many times
16:52so don't question god he just did it except what's happened and it's significant because jerusalem
16:59is going to remain central to god's purposes jerusalem's the place where the lord jesus went to be
17:06crucified and to rise again from the dead where the holy spirit was poured out upon the disciples
17:11and they preached in the temple on the day pentecost and the church of jesus christ was born
17:16it's a place to which in the end days jerusalem is going to be central to the end time plan to which
17:24the messiah ultimately is going to return at his second coming
17:28so jerusalem is significant very significant and david recognizes this he also recognizes the
17:37significance of the event of bringing the ark into the temple into jerusalem and he says i ought to build
17:45a house for this ark i built myself a nice palace should the ark of the covenant dwell in a tent
17:53and we read in chapter 7 verse 1 now it came to pass when the king was dwelling in his house and the
17:58lord had given him rest from all his enemies around that the king said to nathan the prophet see now i
18:03dwell in the house of cedar but the ark of god dwells inside tent curtains
18:08so nathan said to the king go do all that was in your heart for the lord is with you
18:14so he says to the prophet that's a good uh let's build a house for the lord and nathan says yeah build
18:20the house for the lord then the lord comes to nathan and the next day that it happened that night
18:28that the word of the lord came to nathan saying go tell my servant david thus says the lord would you
18:33build a house for me to dwell in i've not dwelt in a house since the time that i brought the children
18:37of israel up from egypt even to this day but have moved about in a tent and in a tabernacle
18:42so it seems that god's initial reaction is uh i'm not interested really in a house
18:47i the whole earth dwells is mine so i really don't need a house to dwell in for myself i've been
18:54moving around in this in this tabernacle during the time that uh it's been erected and i can do the
19:01same now so his initial reaction is don't build the house but he goes on to say yes do so does the
19:10lord actually need the building one sense no he doesn't because the earth is the lord's and the lord
19:15is everywhere and so the lord doesn't actually need the building
19:18one sense in our time you could say that we are the temple of the living god and that's what it
19:24says in the new testament so the church itself is not actually a building according to the new
19:29testament it's a body of people and if you've been born again and have the holy spirit within you then
19:35you're part of the body of messiah you are part of the temple of the living god
19:39same time it's useful to have a building isn't it be better than meeting on hampstead heath or
19:46something or we had to meet in our houses we wouldn't have enough room to get them in there
19:50so it's useful to have a building but it's not essential from god's point of view nevertheless he
19:56says it's in your heart and eventually he sanctions it and says that your son's going to build the house
20:01for me not you david because you shed too much blood david then buys the field which is going to be
20:07use for the temple and he prepares the way for the building of the house and his son is going to
20:16build it when your days when your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers i will set up your
20:23seed after you who will come from your body and it will establish his kingdom he shall build a house
20:30for my name i will establish the throne of his kingdom forever so he's saying here about you're going
20:36to have a son and your son's going to come out of your loins and he's going to build the house for
20:40me i'll establish his throne forever phrase there is ad olam in hebrew which can mean forever can also
20:48mean for a long time so two dual means of that so who was the son the son was solomon did solomon build
20:57the temple yes he did uh solomon hebrew shlomo collected the hebrew word shalom so david was a man
21:06of war solomon a man of peace had peace all around because david had dealt with all the enemies round
21:12about and when his son comes into power he doesn't have to fight wars because israel is now a strong
21:18nation and he is able to build the temple and he builds the temple on the temple mount
21:25that's possibly what it looked like we don't know for sure but it was roughly like that
21:33place which is going to play a huge role in the coming days in in the days which followed
21:41as jerusalem becomes the burdensome stone and the area where this building is now is probably the most
21:47contested piece of real estate in the world we know that this temple stood for some 400 plus years
21:55and at the end of the 400 plus years the line of david came to an end the temple was destroyed and then
22:02the jews went into captivity in babylon returned and rebuilt the second temple under ezra and nehemiah
22:09temple which was added to in the days of before the days of jesus by king herod and this was a model
22:15of the temple this possibly what it looked like pretty much what it looked like and this is where the lord
22:20jesus went during his time and he talked to the people there probably in this area here which is
22:26the court around the temple where people gathered and i think that's probably where also peter was
22:32preaching on the day of pentecost uh because if he was in just a house he wouldn't have been difficult
22:37to get 3 000 people in there but you could easily have had 3 000 people in that area listening to peter
22:43preaching on the day of pentecost that temple which was known as the second temple stood until
22:5180 70 40 years after the lord jesus when the jews rebelled against the romans and that temple was
22:57destroyed as jesus had prophesied with not one stone being left upon another and the trampling down of
23:04jerusalem began uh with the jewish people dispersed to the nations and the temple mount destroyed
23:13and for the next 600 years nothing was there it was empty uh jews couldn't build on it it came under the
23:20christian empire of the byzantines they didn't build on it but then the muslims took over
23:26in the 7th century and in around 685 i think it was 685 to 691 the dome of the rock was built on the
23:38temple mount site one of the earliest mosques to be built anywhere and that doing they were claiming
23:45the ground for islam became the third earliest place for islam and currently of course the muslims
23:53control this area the alaksa mosque is this one here the dome of the rock is this one here it's the
23:59most contested piece of ground in history uh notice there's a little bit of an empty space here
24:07and some said well perhaps the jews could build a third temple in that area uh well that would be
24:13difficult but it's we'll say go into that in a moment interestingly around the dome of this
24:19dome of the rock here there is a writing in arabic which says say not that allah has a son
24:27and puts a curse on people who believe that allah has a son that god has a son
24:31so right there standing in the holy place there is an abomination of desolation which is putting an
24:37antichrist text right there on the mount on the mount okay now today there are people in jerusalem
24:45who want to rebuild a third temple they say because there's this empty space here perhaps we could
24:50shove it in here next to the mosque and there are plans to rebuild a third temple there are some
24:55christians who believe there will be a third temple built here in jerusalem uh anything was to happen to
25:02either remove one of these two buildings it would cause world war three uh uh and at the moment
25:10the best that jewish people can do is go up and pray there under the permission of the muslims and
25:15with some restrictions on doing that present time there's no question that they could rebuild a temple
25:20there but there are people who say they will uh there are people who say according to prophecy that
25:25there will be a third temple rebuilt there in jerusalem i'm a little bit of a skeptic in some
25:31ways on this because having looked at the political things i can't see any way that they could do it
25:35but then the bible says it can it could happen and i said if you were in 1945 saying that in three
25:43years time there's going to be a jewish state in israel having been through the holocaust people would
25:48say probably that's impossible so all things are possible it's not likely but it's possible
25:56if it is then it will be the catalyst which will lead to the abomination of desolation and the
26:00second coming of jesus who will stand on the mount of olives just outside jerusalem
26:05then knock all this stuff down and rebuild a third temple or the final temple in the days of ezekiel
26:12which is described in ezekiel 40 through to 48 okay there's a brief history of jerusalem and the temple
26:21david set this in motion it's still a real issue for today
26:25and it will be according to the book of ezekiel there is going to be a time when
26:34a temple will be built in jerusalem which will be the millennial temple which the messiah will go into
26:41and reign as mashiach ben david messiah son of david reigning over the earth in the messianic kingdom era
26:49okay an interesting subject i won't dwell on that because we want to move on to something else which
26:54is the other aspect of the house of the lord if you go back to the time of david and the line of david
27:01there's an alternative understanding of what it means by the house of david what the house to be built
27:09house in a different sense from a building he's talking now about a dynasty a dynasty of kings is going
27:15to come out of king david and out of that dynasty of kings is going to come the line of the messiah
27:22both jews and christians believe that the messiah has to be a literal descendant of king david has to
27:28be some connection between him
27:33and we read in one chronicles chapter 17 when the prophet nathan goes to talk to david
27:39he tells him this he told he said i tell you the lord will build your house and it should be when
27:45your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers i will set up your seed after you
27:51and he will be one of who will be one of your sons and i will establish his kingdom he should build me a
27:57house and i will establish his throne forever i will be his father he should be my son i will not
28:02take my mercy away from him as i took it from him who was before you and i will establish him in my
28:08house and in my kingdom forever and his throne shall be established forever according to all these
28:14words and according to all this vision so david so nathan spoke to david okay so the prophet comes
28:21to david and he tells him you're going to have a house you're going to have a dynasty of kings that's
28:26going to come after you and one of your king one of your descendants is going to have a house which
28:35will be an eternal house a kingdom forever and a throne which will be established forever
28:44here you've got a very interesting question how can any human have an eternal house an eternal kingdom
28:52and an eternal throne what's he talking about okay so first of all he is talking about the line of david
29:00king solomon was going to come after king david solomon was going to build the temple and out of that
29:07was going to come a dynasty of kings who are going to be descended from king david we read in the book
29:14of kings that after solomon unfortunately his son was not so wise in fact solomon himself wasn't too wise
29:21at the end of his life and as a result of that the kingdom was divided you have the northern kingdom of
29:27which became known as ephraim or israel southern kingdom of judah where jerusalem was situated
29:36maybe we could have a window open i think people are getting a bit hot and someone could turn the
29:40heating off okay so king david dies his son follows him solomon follows him solomon's son follows him
29:49who's rehoboam and in rehoboam's time the kingdom is divided
29:57the kings of the north are not kings descended from david and as far as god is concerned they're
30:02not legitimate kings the kings of the south that's enough are all kings of descended from king david
30:10therefore in one sense they are legitimate kings
30:13they're a bit of a mixture you have rehoboam abijam isa arza jehoshaphat hezekiah
30:22josiah some of them are good hezekiah and josiah particularly are very good
30:28some of them are bad ahaz is bad
30:33manasseh is very bad and yet they're all descended from the kings of israel
30:38the line of david actually comes into being it's ruling for at least 400 years after king david
30:48david's about 1000 bc and you go through to about 583 bc when the babylonians come and bring an end
30:57to the line of david you have an interesting prophecy in the book of jeremiah which speaks
31:03about the last king of the line of david a man called jehoiakim also known as jeconiah or keniah
31:11and in jeremiah it says is this man keniah a despised broken idol a vessel in which is no pleasure
31:17why they cast out he and his descendants and cast into the land which they do not know
31:22oh earth earth earth hear the word of the lord thus says the lord write this man down as childless
31:28a man shall not prosper in his days for none of his descendants shall prosper
31:32sitting on the throne of david and ruling any more in judah so jeremiah has a prophecy and says that
31:38this king jeconiah or jehoiakim is going to be the last king of the line of david and we read in
31:45kings that jehoiakim is actually taken captive into babylon his uncle zedekiah actually does reign for
31:52another 11 years after he's taken into captivity but then the babylonians come and bring an end to
31:59the whole kingdom of david destroy the temple and it's all come to an end so you could say then that
32:07this is the end of the line of david he hasn't got an eternal line he hasn't got an eternal house
32:12it's all over and yet it's not all over
32:16jews keep records they kept records of the descendants of king david and when the jews come
32:24back to jerusalem actually one of the line of king david is one of the rulers a man called zerubbabel
32:31who's at the line of david who becomes one of the rulers so there is still a connection with king david
32:37and zerubbabel's in the genealogy of jesus if you read it in matthew's gospel so you have a continuation
32:43of the line of david and we know that from history that the jewish people kept very strict records and
32:49they kept them they kept records of the genealogies uh probably when the temple was rebuilt the temp
32:55the records were kept in the temple so there was a record kept of the line of david even following
33:01the the return of the jews to judea even though there was no king of the line of david there were
33:08still records kept because they had this idea that the messiah was going to come out of the line of david
33:13so we come to the most interesting point of this talk which is how is this fulfilled
33:25remember that god had promised david he would have a son who would have an eternal house
33:28an eternal throne and an eternal kingdom there was no line of the king no king of david
33:35from the line of david at this point when jesus comes on the throne comes on the scene
33:46and god has said i will establish him in my house in my kingdom forever
33:50of his his throne shall be established forever now i've said no ordinary king can actually have an
33:56eternal house throne or kingdom they're all going to die the line of david came to an end
34:02so can this prophecy be fulfilled is it actually fulfilled through david's greatest son who is
34:11of the line of david if you go to the first book of the first chapter of the book of daniel of
34:16matthew first book of the new testament
34:19the book of the genealogy of jesus christ the son of david son of abraham first verse in the new
34:34testament in hebrew it's a safer told dot yeshua ha-mashiach ben david ben avraham you couldn't
34:42actually get a more jewish statement than that first statement if you read read in hebrew it speaks about
34:47the toldot the generations goes right back to genesis speaks about the generations of humans
34:52speaks about the book it's all written in the book and it speaks about this one being yeshua ha-mashiach
34:57jesus the messiah the savior the messiah who's of the line of david who's the son of david and the son
35:04of abraham
35:08they had the records they were kept they were kept in the temple once the temple was destroyed actually
35:15they didn't have the temple the records anymore but by the time matthew was written they still had
35:20the records and he could check them out you go through matthew's gospel you read the genealogy of
35:26jesus through david solomon and the kings of israel down to joseph the husband of mary of miriam
35:34you go to luke's gospel chapter three you have the genealogy of jesus through david through nathan
35:46and various other people down to joseph and to heli who is according to the talmud the father of miriam
35:55so you've got two different genealogies in the gospel some people say well that's doesn't add up
36:01well you've got two parents you've got a father you've got a mother
36:06joseph wasn't the literal father of jesus but he was the foster father and jesus as the eldest son would
36:12receive the privileges which came through joseph so joseph's genealogy is there mary's genealogy is there
36:19and both of them are descendants from king david so david jesus is of the line of david
36:27so matthew's gospel genealogy through david to joseph luke's gospel the genealogy of jesus
36:35through david to mary there's a whole lesson there which i haven't time to go into
36:41which is actually itself very interesting looking at the genealogies
36:44but bear that in mind so jesus is presented in the first book of the bible in the first chapter
36:52of the bible as the son of david title which is a messianic site title now you come to the
37:00annunciation of to to mary and here we have something very interesting if you read this
37:08in luke's gospel i'm going to read from luke chapter 1 verse 26
37:11now in the sixth month the angel gabriel was sent by god to a city of galilee named nazareth
37:17to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was joseph of the house of david so again you've got
37:23the house of david here the virgin's name was mary and having come in the angel said to her rejoice
37:29highly favored one the lord is with you blessed are you among women but when she saw him she was
37:35troubled at his saying and considered what manner of greeting this was then the angel said to her do
37:40not be afraid mary for you have found favor with god and behold you will conceive in your womb
37:45and bring forth a son and shall call his name jesus yeshua salvation he'll be great and he'll be
37:52called the son of the highest the lord god will give him the throne of his father david he'll reign
37:57over the house of jacob forever and of his kingdom there should be no end
38:01think of that then mary said to the angel how shall this be i do not know a man the angel answered
38:09her and said to her the holy spirit will come upon you the power of the highest will overshadow you
38:13therefore also that holy one who is to be born to you shall be called the son of god
38:18now indeed elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age and is now in the sixth month
38:25for her who was called barren with god nothing will be called nothing will be impossible
38:32one of the great miracles of the bible that the holy spirit comes upon this virgin called miriam
38:39who's betrothed to a man called joseph who's of the line of david she's described as being a virgin
38:46greek word is parthenos that always means someone who has not had any sexual relations because she's
38:54betrothed already she's not actually married so in the jewish custom you were betrothed and the
38:59betrothal could last for at least a year or more and during that time you were committed to your
39:04husband or your husband to be but you did not have sexual relations with him until you were actually
39:08married so miriam was in this position where she was betrothed to the husband but she was not yet
39:17married to him therefore she was still a virgin okay and the holy spirit comes upon her and implants
39:24the seed of the son of god into her womb why she's highly favored among women because she's the
39:31woman the seed of the woman going right back to genesis chapter 3 where it says the seed of the
39:35woman will crush the head of the serpent conceived in the womb of mary notice what the angel says to her
39:43verse 32 he will be great be called the son of the highest the lord god will give him the throne of
39:49his father david he'll reign over the house of jacob forever of his kingdom there will be no end
39:57can you see the connection with that with what we read from chronicles
40:01an eternal house an eternal throne and eternal kingdom going to have no end hebrew for no end is
40:10one of the titles was given to god god is aim soft because he has no end has no beginning he has no
40:15end so saying here that this one is going to be born in your womb is going to be the son of david
40:21also the son of god he's going to have an eternal house an eternal throne and eternal kingdom just as
40:28was promised to david the only way this prophecy to david could be fulfilled is in one who is an eternal
40:34person who is yeshua jesus the messiah if it's not fulfilled in him then the prophecy actually is
40:41vain it's it's it's not possible to happen
40:48so jesus is of the physical line of david
40:53now the jewish view is that the messiah has to be a descendant of king david
40:56yeah jesus was
41:01but it also says in the jewish scriptures he's going to have an eternal house an eternal throne
41:04and eternal kingdom and one of the jewish views about the messiah is that the messiah is a normal human
41:10being who's born of normal human parents in the normal human way which means he's going to be a
41:15normal person who's going to die so he can't have an eternal house an eternal throne an eternal kingdom
41:23i once put this to a jewish man and he said well when the messiah dies which he will do he'll set up a
41:29system which people will live in i said well that won't work because people don't live in systems they'll
41:33keep breaking them he's got to be there to make the system work got to be an eternal person and the
41:39only way in which you can have an eternal house an eternal kingdom an eternal throne is if it's
41:44put in place by someone who is an eternal person which has to be who the messiah is
41:51so when you look at this prophecy it's an incredible prophecy which can only be fulfilled
41:56in yeshua jesus the messiah no one no human's going to fulfill it and the religious jews who are
42:03looking for the messiah to come who's going to be of the line of david are always going to be
42:06disappointed because they're looking for mashiach ben david which means messiah son of david
42:12but the messiah has already come in the person of yeshua and he's going to come back again and reign
42:16as king david reigned but it's going to be yeshua jesus the messiah
42:25and it's all about jesus in the end he is great david's greatest son he came the first time as a
42:31the suffering servant to fulfill isaiah 53 to be the one upon whom the lord would lay the iniquity of
42:35us all so that we could be forgiven for our sins sent the church out with the gospel message to bring
42:41people out of darkness into light through faith in jesus whether you're jewish or gentile you can come
42:45to faith in god who created you uniquely and solely if you repent and believe your believe the gospel
42:53that jesus is the messiah who died for your sins and rose again from the dead you're going to come
42:58back and judge the world in righteousness according to how we have responded to that message
43:03he's going to come back not to london or new york or moscow or any of those places you're going to come
43:07back to yerushalayim to has a team to the mound of olives just outside jerusalem and they're going to go
43:13into jerusalem bring an end to the war set up his messianic kingdom from jerusalem rebuild the temple
43:19not him himself but the temple will be rebuilt he'll go into the temple and rule the world
43:24in righteousness for a thousand years from jerusalem that's what it says in the bible
43:29a lot of the church doesn't believe it but it's in the bible so you better believe it it's going to
43:33happen and right now you see all this crisis over jerusalem is that just an accident or is it part
43:42of the end time program israel back in the land that arab countries trying to change the status of
43:49jerusalem jerusalem jerusalem as zechariah says the burdensome stone burdening all nations preparing
43:54the way for the coming of the messiah the messiah is yeshua he's coming back he's going to have a
44:01kingdom which will have no end in soft like god has no end first of all to be a kingdom on earth then
44:08the earth will be destroyed and all the people who are in the kingdom of god will go up into the new
44:12heavens and new earth which will have no end that means that this kingdom has to be guaranteed only
44:19by someone who has an eternal nature i've been trying to labor that point but it shows that the
44:24messiah has to be more than just a normal man which is what the jewish people are looking for has to be a
44:32person who is equal with god who is himself god and who's able to bring all of these promises into
44:39fulfillment through the events which took place at his first coming and will take place at his second
44:45coming
44:48and the new testament reveals that jesus is that messiah he's the one who's going to be the
44:53fulfillment of this prophecy in the book of isaiah amazing prophecy this one is our chapter 9 verse 6
45:02people know it from christmas cards but when you look at it in its context you look at it what it
45:07really means it's the most incredible statement of who the messiah is it says unto us a child is born
45:15unto us a son is given the government will be upon his shoulder his name will be called wonderful
45:19counselor mighty god everlasting father prince of peace of the increase of his government and peace
45:26there'll be no end until the throne of david and over his kingdom upon the throne of david and over his
45:32kingdom to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward even forever
45:38the zeal of the lord of hosts will perform this so you see that prophecy it speaks about someone's
45:43gonna be born as a son uh gonna be born as a child gonna be given as a son gonna have the government
45:52upon his shoulder obviously the government's not upon his shoulder now if it was it'd be somewhat
45:58better than what we have now but there's going to be a day coming when the government the ruling of
46:02the earth is going to be upon yeshua jesus the messiah so in the book of revelation when jesus
46:09comes back the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of our god and of his messiah and he shall
46:14reign forever and ever he's given a name which is called wonderful counselor uh the word used for
46:22wonderful there is the word pele which is used of the wonders of god doesn't mean he's got a first
46:27class degree in counseling it means he counsels with the wonders of god he has the wisdom of god
46:32when he gives counsel he's called el gibor the mighty god so he's born as a man he's born as a child
46:39yet he's still at the same time the mighty god how can this be he's called the everlasting father avalam
46:50avalam could also mean the father of everlastingness the author of everlasting life
46:54so he's the one who comes and brings peace the prince of peace he brings peace with god
47:02all of those titles apply to yeshua jesus the messiah and it goes on to say the increase of his
47:08government and peace there'll be no end so you're going to have this kingdom which is going to go on
47:12and have no end aim soft god has no end he's going to have no end he's going to continue forever
47:19going to rule upon the throne of david and over his kingdom to order it and establish it with
47:24judgment and justice from that time forward even forever if you believe the scriptures of the second
47:31coming then jesus is actually going to reign literally on the earth from jerusalem over the
47:36throne of david and bring peace and justice to the world that's what's going to happen after the second
47:42coming it's not happening yet but it's going to happen and the bible says the zed of the lord of
47:47hosts will perform this so if god set it in motion and god says it's going to happen it's going to happen
47:52whether the church believes it whether the world believes it makes no difference if god says it's
47:56going to happen it's going to happen so he's the father of everlastingness he's the one who brings
48:03eternal life to those who believe in him and his kingdom is extended to the gentiles
48:09but rooted in the jewish covenant which was made with moses and with david and is manifested in the
48:16new covenant of jeremiah chapter 31 which we looked at in the bible study on thursday
48:24when you look in the new testament he's given this title son of david
48:30then one was brought to him who was demon possessed blight and mute blind and mute and he healed him so
48:34that the blind and mute man both saw spoke and saw multitudes were amazed and said could this be
48:40the son of david matthew 12 the significance of them asking this question is they've seen a miracle
48:47taking place which jesus did i haven't time to go into it you can read it in matthew 12 which was
48:52agreed by the rabbis to be a messianic miracle a miracle which only the messiah could do
48:57healing a man who was blind and mute
48:59so the response of the people saying this was could this be the son of david is this the son of
49:06david is this the messiah pharisees said he's casting out demons by beelzebub committing actually
49:13the unforgivable sin of attributing to miracles of god the work of satan but it was the miracle of god
49:20and it was a sign that jesus really is the messiah he's the messiah who's come and is performing these
49:25miracles he's the son of david whoops he goes into jerusalem on the day we call palm sunday
49:34matthew 21 then the multitudes who went before him poor and those who followed cried out saying
49:39hosanna to the son of david blessed be he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest
49:46all those are greetings from the messiah and he's saying hosanna hosanna to the son of david
49:51ben david the messiah they're saying this is the messiah he's coming baruch haba b'shem adonai
49:59blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord the greeting for the messiah they're saying
50:03and you have crowds of people saying this to jesus and jesus doesn't say it's wrong don't be
50:07don't say this pharisees say to him tell your disciples to shut up they shouldn't be saying this
50:13because this is the greeting for the messiah jesus says if they were silent the very stones would cry out
50:19because he really is the messiah he's really coming into jerusalem and he this time he acknowledges
50:23himself as the son of david actually the first time that he does in the whole of scripture acknowledge
50:29jesus personally says that yes this is right i am the messiah goes into the temple and then we read in
50:38as when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did
50:42and the children crying out in the temple saying hosanna to the son of david they were indignant
50:48so this title son of david is the messianic line it's saying that jesus is descended from david
50:55he also is the messiah he's the one who's fulfilled these prophecies he's the one who has come to redeem
51:00us and he's going to come back again the second time to rule as king david reigned
51:04so this is the greater fulfillment actually much greater than the building of the temple
51:12this is the building of the spiritual temple which is going to last forever and ever and if you're
51:17born again you're born again into this living temple of the holy spirit through jesus the messiah
51:26two scriptures to close with matthew mark chapter 1 verse 15
51:30jesus came to galilee preaching the gospel of the kingdom of god saying the king time is fulfilled
51:36the kingdom of god is at hand repent and believe the gospel the kingdom of god is at hand it's available
51:42now repent turn from your sins believe the gospel believe the good news that jesus is the messiah
51:48who died and rose again from the dead for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son
51:54that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life
51:58he's the one who can give you everlasting life he's the one who is the eternal one who can give eternal
52:03life because it's his to give no human can give you eternal life only god can give you eternal life
52:11so believe in the lord jesus christ enter into his kingdom he is great david's greatest son praise
52:17the lord hallelujah lord we thank you that you are the messiah we thank you the savior we thank you that
52:23the scriptures point to you as son of god but also son of david and we thank you that you fulfilled
52:29all of these scriptures thank you that you gave that promise to david that he'd have a son who would
52:34have an eternal house an eternal kingdom an eternal throne and thank you lord that we can be born again
52:39into that kingdom as we believe on the lord jesus christ for salvation we give you thanks for this
52:45in the name of jesus our messiah savior and lord amen
