00:00In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, peace be with you.
00:19We acknowledge our sins, we acknowledge God's great compassion and mercy.
00:24Loving God, you are with us in good times and in bad times.
00:27Lord, have mercy. You turn to good everything for those who love you.
00:33Christ, have mercy. And you give us fullness of life. Lord, have mercy.
00:40May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and lead us into healing and life everlasting.
00:48Let us pray.
00:49I turn to the pleas of your people with heavenly care, O Lord, we pray, that they may see what must be done and gain strength to do what they have seen.
01:02Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
01:11A reading from the first book of Samuel.
01:26The boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli.
01:32It was rare for the Lord to speak.
01:36In those days, visions were uncommon.
01:41One day it happened, then Eli was laying down in his room.
01:47His eyes were beginning to grow dim.
01:50He could not longer see.
01:53The Lamb of God had not yet gone out.
01:57And Samuel was laying in the sanctuary of the Lord, where the ark of God was when the Lord called.
02:08Samuel, Samuel, he answered.
02:11Here I am.
02:13Then he ran to Eli and said.
02:16Here I am.
02:18Since you called me, Eli said.
02:21I did not call.
02:23Go back and lay down.
02:25Samuel had as yet no knowledge of the Lord.
02:51And the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.
02:57Once again, the Lord called.
03:00The third time, he got up and went to Eli and said.
03:05Here I am.
03:06Since you called me.
03:09Eli then understood that it was the Lord who was calling the boy.
03:15And he said to Samuel, go and lay down.
03:20And if someone calls you, speak, Lord, your servant is listening.
03:27So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
03:32The Lord then came and stood by.
03:35Calling as he had done before.
03:39Samuel, Samuel, Samuel, Samuel answered.
03:42Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.
03:46Samuel grew up and the Lord was with him.
03:50And let no word of his fall to the ground.
03:55All Israel, from then to Bethlehem, came to know that Samuel was accredited as a prophet of the Lord.
04:07This is the word of the Lord.
04:11Thanks be to God.
04:12Here I am, Lord, I come to do your will.
04:22Here I am, Lord, I come to do your will.
04:25I waited, I waited for the Lord.
04:29And he stood down to me.
04:32He heard my cry.
04:34Happy the man who has placed his trust in the Lord and has not gone over the rebels.
04:42Who follow false goods.
04:44Here I am, Lord, I come to do your will.
04:48You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings, but an open ear.
04:54You do not ask for holocaust and victim.
04:57Instead, here I am right.
04:59Here I am, Lord, I come to do your will.
05:02In the scroll of the book, it stands written that I should do your will.
05:08My God, I delight in your law in the depth of my heart.
05:14Here I am, Lord, I come to do your will.
05:17Your justice I have proclaimed in the great assembly.
05:23My lips I have not sealed.
05:25You know it, O Lord.
05:28Here I am, Lord, I come to do your will.
05:30Alleluia, alleluia.
05:43My sheep listen to my voice, says the Lord.
05:45They know, I know them, and they follow me.
05:49Alleluia.
05:50The Lord be with you.
05:52And with your spirit.
05:53A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark.
05:56Glory to you, O Lord.
05:58On leaving the synagogue, Jesus went with James and John straight to the house of Simon and Andrew.
06:07Now Simon's mother-in-law had gone to bed with fever, and they told him about her straight away.
06:15He went to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up.
06:19And the fever left her, and she began to wait on them.
06:26That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed by devils.
06:34The whole town came crowding around the door, and he cured many who were suffering from diseases of one kind or another.
06:44He also cast out many devils, but he would not let them speak, because they knew who he was.
06:54In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house and went off to a lonely place and prayed there.
07:01Simon and his companions set out to search for him, and when they found him, they said,
07:08Everyone is looking for you.
07:10He answered, Let us go elsewhere, to the neighboring country towns, so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came.
07:20And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out devils.
07:26The Gospel of the Lord.
07:31Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
07:37Jesus confronts evil.
07:40A number of times we are told he casts out devils.
07:43He casts out the power of evil.
07:46He also heals.
07:48Jesus is about wholeness, about liberation,
07:51about authenticity,
07:56about being who we are meant to be.
08:00Young Samuel did not understand that God was calling him.
08:05We need to learn to listen quietly in our hearts,
08:10to let God speak,
08:12to recognize when God speaks to us in prayer,
08:15through the circumstances of life,
08:19through events.
08:21That's why we need to
08:22take time
08:24to ponder,
08:26to reflect on our actions,
08:28not just rush from one thing to the other.
08:31And the Lord who healed
08:33overcame evil
08:34is also with us
08:37in our challenges of life,
08:39in our struggles,
08:42in our need for ongoing healing.
08:44Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,
08:54for through your goodness
08:55we have this bread to offer,
08:57which earth has given human hands have made.
08:59It will become for us the bread of life.
09:01Blessed be God forever.
09:03Amen.
09:03Amen.
09:14Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,
09:22for through your goodness we have this wine to offer,
09:25fruit of divine work of human hands.
09:27it will become our spiritual drink.
09:29Blessed be God forever.
09:38Let us pray, brothers and sisters,
09:40that my sacrifice and yours
09:41may be acceptable to God,
09:43our Almighty Father.
09:45May the Lord accept his sacrifice at our hands
09:47to the praise and glory of God's name,
09:50for our good and the good of God's Holy Church.
