31 December - National weather forecast presented by Clare Nasir.
Transcript
00:00Hello there, welcome to your New Year's Eve afternoon forecast from the Met Office.
00:04It was a cold start with a frost, it's going to be a chilly afternoon with some brighter skies in the south.
00:09That cloud rolling in though across Scotland, Northern Ireland.
00:12The wind will be a feature of the weather across the north and the west of Scotland,
00:15delivering those showers further east as we head through the afternoon
00:18and the wind really picking up across the far north there.
00:21Now brighter skies further south, but that frost will return as we head through into evening time as the sun sets.
00:27That cloud pushing in across the Midlands as well as northern parts of England and Wales.
00:31Temperatures struggling wherever you are.
00:33At least there were dry ends to New Year's Eve across much of England and Wales.
00:38But those showers will continue to develop further north.
00:41If you're stepping out as we head through evening time, remember to layer up.
00:45It's a cold one, a mix of clear skies and clouds across much of England and Wales.
00:50Those showers pushing in across Northern Ireland, they'll be fairly scattered as well as Northern England.
00:54But notice this bank of showers gathering and moving southwards across Scotland.
00:59So for the central belt, you will see some around 10, 11 o'clock in the evening and some snow also over the Cairngorns.
01:07So here's that bank of showery rain moving southwards through evening time.
01:12Dry skies elsewhere across England and Wales, maybe a few showers for Northern England.
01:16And notice as we head into the early hours of the morning, some clearer skies do develop.
01:20The winds, though, will be strong across the north and the east of Scotland, with severe gales developing across the Northern Isles.
01:27Guts here could reach 60, 70 miles an hour.
01:30And those showers continuing, particularly across the north of Scotland, snow over the higher ground and across windward-facing coasts.
01:37Notice by this point, though, into the early hours of New Year's Day, those showers will have moved to Northern Ireland as well as the north of England and Wales.
01:46The snow and ice warning kicks in at 6am as those showers increasingly turn to snow.
01:51By this point, the wind is coming in from the Arctic, a northerly blast.
01:56It's going to be a very cold start to 2026.
01:59More clouds across central and southern parts of England and Wales with some showers, a few running in across the North Channel, Irish Sea Coast as well as Northern Ireland.
02:06They'll be fairly scattered.
02:08Elsewhere, though, those showers will gather, particularly across central and northern areas.
02:12There will be snow showers by this point, and that strength of the wind will add to the problems as well.
02:17Poor visibility drifting as we see the snow accumulate up to 20 centimetres in places over the next 36 hours.
02:24And they will continue into New Year's Day afternoon.
02:28Elsewhere, some brighter skies are possible before the frost returns and becomes widespread across many areas into New Year's Day evening and overnight.
02:36Temperatures then, 6 or 7 degrees Celsius, add on the strength of the wind.
02:40It's going to feel even colder than that.
02:43So, a windy end to New Year's Day.
02:46Into the 2nd of February, notice here we do have a warning for snow and ice across Northern Ireland, Wales, down towards the Midlands, the southeast of England.
02:55This is a feature running down the western side and sliding down towards the southeast.
02:59We're expecting wintry showers here.
03:02Expect some patchy snow accumulations up to 1 to 2 centimetres.
03:07So, into Friday morning, slippery surfaces, the risk of some ice as well.
03:11Some ice also, with snow showers across central and northern areas of Scotland and a widespread frost elsewhere.
03:16So, a wintry start to the beginning of the new year and that cold wind really making it feel even colder.
03:24So, New Year's Day evening time and overnight.
03:28A rash of showers either side of inland, the central spine of the country, where you'll see that widespread frost.
03:33The wind picks up into Friday across the eastern side of England as well as the north and the east of Scotland.
03:39Expect some wintry showers clipping these parts here as we see those wintry showers extend further south through the day with some clearer skies to follow.
03:47A widespread frost which will be severe into Saturday as well as Sunday.
03:52Those wintry showers in the north, snow showers over the higher ground, even at lower levels, will be fairly scattered.
03:56But temperatures will struggle.
03:59And across the snow fields of Scotland, we are likely to see values as low as minus 10 to minus 12 degrees Celsius by night.
04:06Wherever you are, take care.
04:07Happy New Year.
04:08Have a wonderful early start to 2026.
04:11For the 10-day trend this week, check it out.
