19 November - National weather forecast presented by Clare Nasir.
Transcript
00:00Hello there, welcome to your evening weather update from the Met Office.
00:04Through Wednesday evening and overnight, temperatures plummeting.
00:07The whole of the UK ensconced in an Arctic air mass coming in from the far north.
00:13Strong winds bring in with it, snow showers, the risk of ice.
00:16There are numerous weather warnings across the country.
00:19Stay tuned on our website for updates and there is an amber warning also across Yorkshire.
00:25More about that in a moment.
00:27However, as we head through Thursday and into Friday, this ridge comes in so we lose the strength of the wind.
00:34But notice this band of cloud and rain will gradually make inroads across the northwest through Friday.
00:40Bring in more cloud and then some rain preceded by some hill snow.
00:45So that's the picture over the next 36 hours or so.
00:48For the time being, temperatures plummeting very quickly.
00:51We're expecting a severe frost.
00:53And notice where the snow showers are, Northern Ireland, the northern half of Scotland, eastern counties of England, western parts of Wales down towards the west country.
01:03And certainly in land, you're going to see snow accumulations.
01:07There will be a risk of ice, obviously, where you've seen those snow showers.
01:11But in land, it's mostly dry, just bitterly cold.
01:14So temperatures will fall very quickly.
01:17It's going to feel colder than the night before as temperatures dip probably in the countryside to minus 6, minus 7 degrees Celsius, perhaps even lower than that across the highlands of Scotland.
01:30And notice this driving wind, particularly along the north and the eastern side of the country, pushing in those snow showers.
01:37Let's just pick up on that amber warning for a moment.
01:41You can see this is a snow and ice warning covering eastern counties of England with an ice warning across East Anglia.
01:47But zooming in, we can just see where this amber warning extends across mostly the North York Moors, East Yorkshire as well.
01:55So here we're likely to see up to around 25 centimetres of snow over the next 24 hours or so, causing problems, particularly with communities at any elevation.
02:09And certainly if you're driving over higher routes, really quite hazardous conditions there for a time.
02:15Now, Thursday morning starts cold with a frost, a severe frost at that.
02:19For many, it's a bright day with sunny spells, but those wintry showers continue across the west, the north as well as the east.
02:27Winds still strung along this eastern side to expect a significant wind chill here.
02:32Inland, brightest skies will be central and western areas of Scotland, Wales, northwest England, down towards the west country, away from Cornwall as well as Pembrokeshire.
02:41Temperatures then perhaps up a notch, 4, 5, 6 degrees Celsius.
02:45But the wind really will be significant as we head through the afternoon, exposed to that northerly wind.
02:53Now, through Thursday evening and overnight, some showery bursts continue across eastern counties.
02:59These showers become a little bit more offshore across Irish seacoast, just the tip of Wales, the tip of the southwest peninsula.
03:06Dryer skies for a time across Northern Ireland and Scotland, as thickening cloud into Friday brings eventually some outbreaks of rain preceded by some hill snow.
03:16Brighter skies elsewhere.
03:18These showers across the North Sea will maybe just clip the fringe of the coastline, but inland you'll see drier weather with that sunshine,
03:26but certainly rain on its way as we head through into the weekend.
03:29For more details, check out our 10-day trend this week, it's with Annie.
03:34Bye-bye.
