20 November - National weather forecast presented by Clare Nasir.
Transcript
00:00Hello there and a very good morning to you on this Thursday morning which is bitterly cold outside.
00:05Last night we saw a severe frost and also further snow showers causing problems particularly with ice through this morning into this afternoon and in fact this evening and overnight yet again.
00:16The winds are coming in from a cold direction, there are numerous weather warnings in force, check out the Met Office website for the latest on those.
00:24And we do have an amber warning for snow across the north east of England.
00:30Eventually though the ridge is pushing in from the west and then we'll see a change in our weather through Friday and into the weekend.
00:37Let's pick up though on that amber warning just for a moment, covering particularly the higher ground of north and east Yorkshire.
00:45Here we could see up to 25 centimetres of snow through today and that's going to cause problems with power cuts and some communities could be cut off.
00:56Notice the snow showers pushing well inland so covering much of Pennine districts as well and that yellow warning extends further north as well as further south.
01:05So if you're stepping out first thing this morning you may run into those snow showers causing problems particularly at any elevation.
01:12They're moving across northern Ireland, rain and snow along the coastline, a similar situation for the south west of Wales as well as the west country, a mix of rain and snow here.
01:23But ice is the other issue so even where you've seen few showers or maybe none at all there's still a risk of slippery surfaces first thing this morning.
01:33Now through today brighter skies inland where the winds won't be as strong so you'll see some sunshine.
01:38But with a strong wind it's going to feel bitterly cold along the coastline exposed to that breeze and certainly very strong along this eastern side as those snow showers push inland.
01:49Further accumulations are likely across central and northern areas of Scotland certainly for the hills of Northern Ireland as well.
01:56Temperatures then well well below average for this time of year 3, 4, 5 degrees Celsius.
02:01You may pick up to 7 across places such as Cardiff and Plymouth.
02:05Now into this evening and overnight for most if you're travelling it really is again the return of frost and the risk of ice.
02:13But for many it's dry with clear skies but those showers continue across Irish seacoast pushing in across the north of Northern Ireland.
02:21Certainly for the eastern side that amber warning continues until 9pm and a scattering of wintry showers across the north and northeast of Scotland.
02:31So through this evening and overnight we continue with that wintry theme, clear skies, a severe frost.
02:39Temperatures probably the lowest of the season so far.
02:43We could see a minus 10 perhaps a minus 11 across the highlands of Scotland.
02:49And into Friday morning it's drier for many.
02:52Most of these showers will be offshore just grazing the east coast there.
02:56Down towards the southeast you could see some showery bursts first thing.
03:00But through the day brighter skies, some sunshine before thickening cloud brings outbreaks of rain to Northern Ireland as well as Western Scotland.
03:07Proceeded by some hill snow.
03:10Still chilly wherever you are.
03:113, 4, 5 degrees Celsius towards the east.
03:14But at least here you'll see some brighter weather until the sun goes down.
03:17Wherever you are take care.
03:18Stay up to date with the warnings and I'll see you again soon.
