00:00Hello there, welcome to your Tuesday evening weather update from the Met Office.
00:04As we enter Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so we inherit a cold easterly wind.
00:10Currently across central and northern areas of Europe, the air is bitter, it's icy.
00:15And notice high pressure across Scandinavia, low pressure sitting across Italy, a squeeze on the isobars,
00:21bringing with it that wind chill, particularly for England and Wales, breezy for Northern Ireland,
00:26a lighter breeze though, really under the influence of that high pressure across Scotland.
00:31So some choppy seas, strong winds, especially along the coastline, eastern and southern areas through the next few days,
00:38but the air remains fairly settled and it will mix up through tonight and into tomorrow with the promise of some brighter skies.
00:45This fresh wind actually extends through this evening across eastern Scotland towards the north,
00:50where we are seeing some patchy rain and drizzle, also for the Western Isles, but that will tend to ease.
00:57Further south, where the cloud's thick enough, yes, you could see the odd spot or two of drizzle as well.
01:02A strong wind as we enter Christmas Eve then, as that cloud rolls over and breaks up.
01:07And where we see some starry skies in shelter, temperatures will dip close to freezing,
01:12so there could be some pockets of frost, particularly for central and northern areas of Scotland,
01:15inland across mid Wales, West Midland in rural spots.
01:19First thing then on Christmas Eve, you'll wake up to some sunshine across some parts of the country.
01:25More clouds across central and southwestern areas, but even here it will break through the day.
01:30That wind chill then picks up as the winds become stronger and we'll see a lighter breeze across Scotland,
01:36where again there'll be some brighter weather, if not some sunshine.
01:39A mix of clouds and some for Northern Ireland, maybe more clouds just rolling in from the North Sea
01:44with that onshore breeze across eastern counties of England.
01:49It's a chilly day, temperatures lower than Tuesday, coming in 6, 7, 8 degrees Celsius.
01:54Add on the strength of the wind, it's going to feel even colder.
01:58Now through Christmas Eve evening, notice that breeze is still with us.
02:03A lighter wind across Scotland, that cloud just comes and goes, it could just push inland into the early hours of Christmas Day.
02:11Most places, though, dry as we enter Christmas Day, perhaps the odd spot or two of rain across the far north there.
02:18But Christmas Day morning will start on a very windy note.
02:22Notice towards the far south there, these winds could just touch gale force,
02:27certainly a strong wind rolling in here from the near continent, making it feel cold as we step outside.
02:34It's a good day, though, for a Christmas Day walk.
02:37For most of us, it's dry with some sunshine coming through, a bit more cloud across eastern Scotland, northeast England.
02:43And then notice later on through the afternoon, one or two very light showers could just bump into the far southwest of England.
02:51And notice, yes, that wind also very gusty over the moors, over the Pennines as well.
02:57So through the afternoon, for most, you'll see some sunshine.
03:01Temperatures will struggle through the afternoon, even so.
03:04A quiet day, particularly towards the north with a lighter wind, four to six degrees Celsius.
03:10A chilly and windy day further south.
03:13Into Boxing Day, not a lot of change.
03:16Eastern counties yet again could see a little more cloud.
03:18Some brighter skies coming through and still windy in the south.
