00:00:15Bayview University hosts Tim Austin's first professional ring appearance in his hometown
00:00:20of Sinti first title fight this city has played host to since Aaron Pryor
00:00:25destroyed Akio Kameda in July of 1982
00:00:30two big-name fighters from the past who hailed from Cincinnati the other was
00:00:34former heavy
00:00:35weight champion as a job we are expecting a crowd of excited boxing fans
00:00:40seeking refuge from the heat of the summer night so come on in loosen your tie
00:00:45roll up your sleeves go ahead and untuck your shirt
00:00:50it's time once again for boxing after dark
00:00:55and hello again everybody I'm Jim Lampley it's summertime so it's time to
00:01:00tighten up the belt and lose a few pounds therefore we take a rare
00:01:05visit down into the lower weight classes 118 pounds for Tim Austin
00:01:10Austin's defense of his title in the bantamweight division 115 pounds in the preliminary bout
00:01:15where Felix Machado defends his title against Mauricio Pastrana we've been in this neighborhood
00:01:20a couple of times before most noteworthily when fellow Albuquerqueans
00:01:25Romero and Johnny Tapia fought against each other July 18 1997 in Las Vegas
00:01:30but we haven't been here so often that the fighters you're going to see tonight
00:01:33our household name so settled
00:01:35go back and feast your eyes on some new material as we bring you Tim Austin's homecoming
00:01:40here on boxing after dark working with me as always hbo boxing analyst Larry
00:01:45merchant and Larry Tim Austin was an Olympian won a bronze medal
00:01:50uh he's unbeaten in 23 fights why is it that he's had to
00:01:55wait until the age of 30 to finally fight for the first time in his hometown
00:02:00remember Randy Newman's satiric ode to short people who got no reason
00:02:05to live better than most I'm a Randy Newman fan well most American boxing fans that little guys
00:02:10got no reason to fight because they got teeny tiny heads and teeny tiny
00:02:15tiny fists and little short legs and little shorter arms
00:02:20and the only ones who love them are their pops and their moms but some of them can't
00:02:25fight well good and we've got a couple of fights that follow the same basic profile because
00:02:30in both instances you'll be seeing a tall southpaw champion will be trying to fend off the
00:02:35of a more aggressive conventional fighter and of course describing the technique to
00:02:40us our hbo boxing after dark expert the legendary fight trainer and manager emmanuel
00:02:45steward emmanuel in both instances as i say southpaw champion who's a boxer puncher tries to
00:02:50fend off a guy who's probably going to come at him is there any one way for the challengers to break down these southpaw
00:02:55champions well normally the tradition pattern is for the right-headed to apply a lot of pressure and
00:03:00through a lot of right hands but a lot of times you can be just as effective by using your left hand
00:03:05as a matter of fact a left jab when it's delivered over the right shoulder is a very effective punch and it gets to get
00:03:10the right hand where he doesn't watch so much further right hand in fact when i was training oscar de la
00:03:14la jolla to fight with camacho he was very effective by using a left uppercut because camacho
00:03:19he never expected that most southpaws are always watching for the right hand if you play a lot of
00:03:24catching fire chair presbyter stretch on them because most of them think a lot they're very intelligent camacho
00:03:29They're very intelligent fighters, and if you put a lot of pressure on them and then the Jews are left.
00:03:34It gets them offset and they can't watch for that right hand, which they're trained to watch for most of the time.
00:03:39And his first fight may perfectly follow that profile because Mauricio Pastrana is the challenger.
00:03:44And his game is aggression.
00:03:46So let's take a look at the tail of the tape for these 115.
00:03:4915-pound fighters.
00:03:50There's a Passan Mountain moon in the skies over Venezuela and Colombia.
00:03:53And these...
00:03:54These two countries don't like each other.
00:03:56Machado and Pastrana, the same age, 28.
00:03:58Machado...
00:03:59Pastrana from Venezuela, Pastrana from Colombia.
00:04:00You see the three-inch height advantage for the title holder.
00:04:04And the three-inch reach advantage that goes with it.
00:04:07Pastrana weighing in at only one...
00:04:09One-thirteen and three-quarters.
00:04:10His manager says if he wins tonight, he wants to take him on back down to...
00:04:14He has fought up in the 118-pound division in his last few fights.
00:04:19Tonight, Pastrana comes in, having gained nearly 11 pounds.
00:04:22He weighs 124.
00:04:23Machado...
00:04:24Unofficially on our HBO scale, 121.
00:04:27Rules of the bout, whether unofficial rings...
00:04:29...sidescorer, Harold Letterman.
00:04:30Okay, Jim.
00:04:30The Felix Machado, Mauricio Pastrana finally scheduled for 12...
00:04:34...sidescorer rounds as you see on your screen.
00:04:35But let's go over the four points that the judges used to score each round.
00:04:39Clean punching, clean heart punching, effective aggressiveness, ring generalship.
00:04:44And defense with a strong, strong emphasis on clean punching.
00:04:48Jim.
00:04:49All right, Harold.
00:04:50And let's start with a closer look at Venezuelan title holder...
00:04:54Alex Machado, he's got a great smile, Larry.
00:04:59Well, he had a chance to practice it on a very large family.
00:05:02He's one of...
00:05:04Fourteen children.
00:05:04And although he didn't graduate from high school...
00:05:09He teaches math as a substitute in high school today.
00:05:14He has come all this way after being knocked out in his professional...
00:05:19...debut eight years ago.
00:05:21Most boxers come from difficult circumstances.
00:05:24None more difficult than the circumstances which produced Mauricio...
00:05:29...of Colombia.
00:05:30His mother was 12 years...
00:05:34...old when he was born.
00:05:36Reminds me of an Argentine fighter we once had who said...
00:05:39...was abandoned as an infant and said...
00:05:41...sometimes your parents can't afford...
00:05:44...to love you.
00:05:47His big win and upset...
00:05:49...of Michael Carvajal, that put him front and center.
00:05:54The chances to win titles make some money.
00:05:58In fact...
00:05:59...he named both of his sons after Michael and Danny Carvajal.
00:06:04And as you watch tonight, you can log on to HBO.com slash boxing where...

00:09:16...good luck...
00:09:17...touch'em up!
00:09:19...Machado...
00:09:21...the titleist...
00:09:22...grunt...
00:09:23...grunt...
00:09:24...on nearly every punch...
00:09:26...he throws...
00:09:27...and I'm finding myself...
00:09:28...wondering Jim...
00:09:29...where...
00:09:29...their punch...
00:09:30...that...
00:09:31...can keep up...
00:09:32...with all of those grunts...
00:09:33...power grunts...
00:09:35...and...
00:09:36...jab grunts...
00:09:37...it should help them...
00:09:38...they have both visual...
00:09:39...and verbal cues...
00:09:40...with which to follow...
00:09:41...the punches...
00:09:42...right?
00:09:43...let's go!
00:09:44...somewhere Monica Seles...
00:09:46...watches in appreciation...
00:09:48...as Machado...
00:09:50...like Monica...
00:09:51...a southpaw...
00:09:52...lines up...
00:09:53...and prepares...
00:09:53...to grunt...
00:09:54...lands his first...
00:09:55...straight left hand...
00:09:56...over the top...
00:09:57...to the face...
00:09:58...of Mauricio...
00:09:58...can you see...
00:10:01...the difference...
00:10:02...in height?
00:10:03...so as Pastranas...
00:10:04...managed a trainer...
00:10:05...Nelson Lopez...
00:10:06...said to us...
00:10:07...Marie...
00:10:08...can't box...
00:10:09...this guy...
00:10:10...he's got to get inside...
00:10:11...he's got to get inside...
00:10:12...right now...
00:10:13...and Machado...
00:10:14...is making the fight...
00:10:15...be at the distance...
00:10:16...where he's effective at...
00:10:17...and at this time...
00:10:18...Pastranas...
00:10:18...not that effective...
00:10:19...and...
00:10:20...what Pastranas...
00:10:21...got to do...
00:10:22...is apply more pressure...
00:10:23...you can't sit back...
00:10:24...and keep...
00:10:25...depending on throwing...
00:10:26...that single...
00:10:27...straight right hand...
00:10:28...which...
00:10:29...as I said earlier...
00:10:30...Manchado...
00:10:28...and all...
00:10:29...sapfiles are trained...
00:10:30...to...
00:10:31...man...
00:10:32...
00:10:33...often times...
00:10:34...when you have a...
00:10:35...south paw...
00:10:36...the right hand...
00:10:37...the jab...
00:10:38...is a deciding factor...
00:10:38...and...
00:10:39...whoever jams the most...
00:10:40...wins the fight...
00:10:41...because it sets up...
00:10:42...other things...
00:10:43...well...
00:10:44...certainly...
00:10:45...Manchado...
00:10:46...is in no way...
00:10:47...timid about throwing...
00:10:48...his jab against...
00:10:49...Pastrana...
00:10:50...he's started off...
00:10:51...with the tempo...
00:10:52...and the right jab...
00:10:53...here in round number...
00:10:53...Pastrana has been...
00:10:54...lunging...
00:10:55...reaching...
00:10:56...and hasn't found...
00:10:57...a creative way...
00:10:58...to get in...
00:10:58...on side of...
00:10:59...Machado's jab so far...
00:11:00...no, and if you notice...
00:11:01...Machado's taken like...
00:11:02...a half a step back...
00:11:03...whenever...
00:11:03...Pastrana starts...
00:11:04...running in...
00:11:05...just enough to let him...
00:11:06...miss...
00:11:07...and then he tries...
00:11:08...to counter back...
00:11:09...with his left...
00:11:08...after he lets him...
00:11:09...lunch...
00:11:10...Johnno has a very...
00:11:11...confident look...
00:11:12...when Pastrana scored...
00:11:13...his big upset...
00:11:13...in the first...
00:11:14...the first victory...
00:11:15...over Michael Carvajal...
00:11:16...of Vegas...
00:11:17...he had the advantage...
00:11:18...of going against...
00:11:19...de Carvajal...
00:11:20...who...
00:11:21...probably...
00:11:22...the one big...
00:11:23...punch knockout...
00:11:24...and therefore...
00:11:25...gave Pastrana...
00:11:26...a lot of chances...
00:11:27...Bernese with a different...
00:11:28...opponent...
00:11:27...this guy seems to be...
00:11:28...very well prepared...
00:11:29...very confident...
00:11:30...and has a perfect...
00:11:31...strategy at this stage...
00:11:32...for fighting...
00:11:33...by Pastrana...
00:11:34...Round one...
00:11:35...is all matado...
00:11:36...so far...
00:11:37...you see him...
00:11:39...delivering...
00:11:40...the straight left there...
00:11:41...and leading with it again...
00:11:42...he's doing...
00:11:42...a lot of things...
00:11:43...if you watch...
00:11:44...often when he finishes...
00:11:45...stewing his left...
00:11:46...he'll finish up...
00:11:47...with a right jab...
00:11:47...which...
00:11:48...pushed his own back...
00:11:49...between the two of them...
00:11:50...instead of throwing...
00:11:51...a right hook...
00:11:52...he'll throw a straight left...
00:11:52...and come back...
00:11:53...with a right jab...
00:11:54...and then he finishes up...
00:11:55...back at a distance...
00:11:56...where he wants to be at...
00:11:57...also finishes back...
00:11:57...to pick up...
00:11:58...in balance...
00:11:59...I mean...
00:12:00...one thing about...
00:12:01...finishing combinations...
00:12:02...with the jab...
00:12:03...is it sets you...
00:12:04...right back...
00:12:05...into your offensive...
00:12:06...to do more things...
00:12:07...than merely trying to pull...
00:12:08...around him...
00:12:11...that right...
00:12:12...in what...
00:12:13...that right hit...
00:12:14...is going to call this a slip...
00:12:15...I'm not so sure...
00:12:16...it looks like a knockdown...
00:12:16Officially it was a knockdown because he seemed to have looked off to the side for a moment and got hit with a punch.
00:12:21He had to look down if he hadn't been hit. So officially it's a knockdown.
00:12:26Should be, but the referee called it a slip.
00:12:29That was a knockdown.
00:12:31Any, any time you hit from the waist above, even on the shoulder and you go down every.
00:12:36Result of that blow, it's really officially a knockdown.
00:12:39He doesn't even have to be on the chin.
00:12:41I'll be checking between rounds to see if they ruled it a slip.
00:12:46Manny's exactly on the money here.
00:12:47It should have been called a knockdown in both corners.
00:12:50They speak Spanish.
00:12:51And our interpreter is Hector Garcia.
00:12:52You do it very good.
00:12:54You said double J.
00:12:56Dab and use that over.
00:12:59You're doing very well, very.
00:13:01Dab and use that double jab.
00:13:06Dab and use that double jab.
00:13:06Dab and use that double jab.
00:13:11You do it very well.
00:13:13Hopper, the uppercut and the hook.
00:13:16You do it very well.
00:13:17You do it very well.
00:13:19Back down.
00:13:21Downs are really based on a kind of common sense part of it, whether someone is.
00:13:26Off balance when they fall or pushed or wrestled down.
00:13:31That was not a knockdown.
00:13:32Nor was it.
00:13:33.
00:13:34.
00:13:35.
00:13:36.
00:13:37.
00:13:38.
00:13:39.
00:13:40.

00:15:15this fight goes on also
00:15:20shot able to land a solid body punch as Pastrana came inside and missed
00:15:25it
00:15:30I
00:15:35Stop
00:15:40So far the shadow probably should be fighting Tim Austin tonight
00:15:45Tim Austin has a tough fight tonight
00:15:50You don't need two of them
00:15:52I think it's going to be a very rough fight tonight
00:15:54You made it right
00:15:55My strata is doing what he should do is picking up the pace day realizes he's losing the fight anyway
00:16:00He's making it a lot more intense and making the face face be a little bit faster to take away that
00:16:05Fake time of the shadows
00:16:07Strata trying to wing shots to the body
00:16:10He realizes he's got to make it a fight
00:16:12He's not going to win a boxing match
00:16:14It doesn't matter whether these
00:16:15Punches are perfectly thrown
00:16:17Just keep throwing them and make havoc in there
00:16:19That's what he's going to have
00:16:20And he's trying to use his height disadvantage as an advantage
00:16:24Because after
00:16:25After he throws he gets very low
00:16:27And Machado has been unable to get to him
00:16:29When he's in
00:16:30In that kind of a crouch
00:16:32That was a good delivery on the right hand
00:16:34I would not be surprised
00:16:35If the fight goes on
00:16:36If you don't see Pastrano switch to a southpaw style himself
00:16:40Stop!
00:16:42Stop!
00:16:55You can't just throw one punch.
00:16:57You can't just throw one punch.
00:17:00Every time you throw a punch, take that front step.
00:17:05Stay outside.
00:17:06Don't throw and stay outside.
00:17:07You gotta come inside.
00:17:08You have to get close to him.
00:17:10Get inside.
00:17:13We're behind.
00:17:15Let's go.

00:17:34Let's put pressure on this guy.
00:17:39Let's put pressure on this guy.
00:17:44In the Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University.
00:17:49You mentioned the boxing tradition of Cincinnati earlier this evening on the.
00:17:54Undercard Cincinnati bred 2000 Olympian.
00:17:59Man who fought at Sydney and won a silver medal.
00:18:01Ricardo Williams had his third professional fight.
00:18:04And we'll show you highlights later on from.
00:18:09Williams's third pro appearance.
00:18:12Aaron Pryor is in the arena.
00:18:14Stop.
00:18:15Stop.
00:18:16Heavyweight stony tubs and far more illustrious.
00:18:19Charles.
00:18:20We're both from here in Cincinnati.
00:18:23Straight right hand lands for.
00:18:24Castrana.
00:18:25And another one as Castrana begins to cut down the distance.
00:18:29Between himself and Matata.
00:18:30I could tell between rounds when he got up before the round began.
00:18:34I could see he's very dissatisfied with the way the fight is going.
00:18:37And unlike some guys who have just followed.
00:18:39He's going to say that the fight has been better than Sata.
00:18:40He's going to change that fight around completely.
00:18:41He's going to go to another level.
00:18:42Which is a.
00:18:43.
00:18:44What I'm saying is, unlike some guys who give in, who concede.
00:18:49The fight without really stopping the fight, he's trying to make.
00:18:54Something else happens.
00:18:55Yes, he's going to make a change.
00:18:56If he sees, and they told him between rounds that he's losing.
00:18:59It seems to excite him enough to the point where he's going to bring this fight to another
00:19:02level.
00:19:03So even though Machado made.
00:19:04If he doesn't have a little control, it's going to be a lot more difficult going down
00:19:07the stretch.
00:19:08Well, all credit to Pastrana.
00:19:09That's what makes for interesting fights when one guy is willing to understand that he's
00:19:13behind.
00:19:14And is willing to make a change as a result.
00:19:17And the biggest danger is...
00:19:19After he finishes clutching, his balance is bad.
00:19:22But if he can land that right here and do it...
00:19:24He can maybe possibly get this fight turned around.
00:19:26Stop!
00:19:27Let's go!
00:19:29Any time you have a significant height disadvantage like this, and the shorter fighter...
00:19:34is trying to bear in.
00:19:35And particularly if he's awkward and off balance, as Pastrana has been.
00:19:39You have to look for headbutts.
00:19:41You know, also there's a thing of mother nature...
00:19:44She gives away something.
00:19:45She takes that.
00:19:46But I think although Machado...
00:19:49is taller...
00:19:50going down the stretch oftentimes, the shorter physical fighters have that advantage oftentimes.
00:19:54are physically much stronger and better coordinated.
00:19:57And the look of...
00:19:58And the look of...
00:19:59extreme certainty, which Machado carried on his face the first couple of rounds...
00:20:04begins to moderate just a little bit as Pastrana has managed by changing his style...
00:20:09to create just a little bit of doubt in Machado's mind.
00:20:11Stop!
00:20:12Stop!
00:20:13No punching!
00:20:14Let's go!
00:20:14This round was a pretty comfortable round for Machado.
00:20:16But the second round, as well as this round, is becoming more and more...
00:20:19towards Pastrana in terms of his performance.
00:20:22And you mentioned you thought Pastrana might switch...
00:20:24to a southpaw style.
00:20:25He switched his feet a couple of times there.
00:20:27Didn't throw a punch out of the southpaw stance.
00:20:29And Machado kept him from doing it by going to work.
00:20:32I think as a fight goes on, he's gonna make...
00:20:34to switch at least one time.
00:20:37What I like about Machado...
00:20:39Machado is...
00:20:40that he's a fighter...
00:20:42who happens to be...
00:20:43a shot scorer.
00:20:44Stop!
00:20:44He doesn't fight...
00:20:45like a southpaw.
00:20:46He doesn't fight like a southpaw.

00:21:24You got to throw, you got to throw those punches.
00:21:29The double jab and the double hook.
00:21:32We're doing very good.
00:21:33And counterpunch.
00:21:34Counterpunch.
00:21:35Don't go with my purse.
00:21:36Counterpunch.
00:21:37Keep those hands.
00:21:39What's up?
00:21:40Come on.
00:21:41Get this guy.
00:21:42What I meant by that, Emmanuel was...
00:21:44He's not just one of those southpaws who's trying to take advantage of the fact.
00:21:49That he's an unorthodox type of fighter.
00:21:52He's really fighting.
00:21:53He knows how to fight.
00:21:54No, he's not waiting to counterpunch all the time, neither.
00:21:57He's very busy.
00:21:58In fact, he initiated...
00:21:59He takes advantage of the action most of the time.
00:22:01What I like about Machado is just about everything so far.
00:22:04Howard Letterman, how'd you score the first three rounds?
00:22:06Okay, Jim.
00:22:07Fred and F in 30 to 27.
00:22:09Jim, talk about ring generalship.
00:22:11This guy's beautiful.
00:22:12He keeps that fight exactly where he wants.
00:22:14Exactly the right distance.
00:22:15So he's very effective with that right hand.
00:22:16Very much.
00:22:17And that hot straight left hand.
00:22:18Jim.
00:22:19Watch what Marisa Pastrana does.
00:22:21He keeps raising his left hand above his head.
00:22:23I can't figure out...
00:22:24I can't figure out why he does it.
00:22:25It's a waste of time and a waste of energy.
00:22:27What a big...
00:22:29The biggest thing that's going on at this stage right now is the zone that Machado's
00:22:32keeping the fight at.
00:22:33We can always take that one step...
00:22:34step back and then counter punch.
00:22:35There he is right there.
00:22:36Exactly.
00:22:37And that's the difference right there.
00:22:39He's always making Pastrana be not where he can just throw a punch.
00:22:43He has to lunge...
00:22:44He has to do two things at the same time.
00:22:47And every time he does it, for the most part...
00:22:49Machado has taken that half a step.
00:22:50They can't.
00:22:51There it is again.
00:22:52That's keeping his rhythm up.
00:22:54Well, all tall guys try to do this, the short guys, but they don't.
00:22:59They don't always succeed.
00:23:00Yes, and he's doing it.
00:23:01But a lot of tall guys try to set and block the punch.
00:23:04But he's keeping that zone all the time, keeping Bastrana all off balance and uncoordinated.
00:23:09He's talking about the ability to adjust in the ring.
00:23:11Pastrana was beginning to cut down the distance.
00:23:14It creates some confusion for Machado with sheer aggression in round three.
00:23:18Machado in one.
00:23:19One minute between rounds, sizes the situation up and makes a perfect adjustment and has
00:23:24And he's trying to back where he wants him, in the fourth.
00:23:26But every time he shoots that vicious right hand, his tip makes a...
00:23:29A little nervous if you're in the corner, Machado.
00:23:31Sure.
00:23:32Because he's got a powerful right hand in particular doing that...
00:23:34He's losing the fight on a decision that the Raiders won.
00:23:37He's punching probably with more power.
00:23:39He's holding the right hand than he normally would in most fights.
00:23:40He's holding the right hand.
00:23:41He's holding the right hand.
00:23:42He's holding the right hand.
00:23:43He normally would in most fights.
00:23:44He's holding the right hand.
00:23:45He would wait then.
00:23:46I'm running the left hand.
00:23:47You're moding up, left you're?

00:24:33Rebogun!

00:24:43Let's go!
00:24:45Mauricio Pastrana making his presence felt.
00:24:48From the last minute of round four, Felix Machado continuing to box his way to an edge on the score.
00:24:53Let's go!
00:24:56Very good, champion.
00:24:58The same work.
00:25:00You have to use a counter punch.
00:25:02Boom!
00:25:03You're the champ.
00:25:06Open up with that jab, jab, and then you...
00:25:08Open up with your right hand.
00:25:10Don't you attack him, wait for him to come to you.
00:25:13Every time when he throws, then you come out after him.
00:25:18Hey, I can't even have to wait.
00:25:19We have nothing.
00:25:20We have nothing.
00:25:21We have nothing.
00:25:23You're waiting too long.
00:25:25We have to get close to this guy and you have to hit him.
00:25:28When you hit him, you got to get on top of him.
00:25:32Use the combinations.
00:25:33And work.
00:25:34You got to use the combinations to get on top of this guy.
00:25:38You just have to put those hands up and you...
00:25:43Those hooks.
00:25:44Muchos golpes.

00:25:53Round 5 of the Schedule 12, the man in the black trunks is Felix Machado of Venezuela.
00:25:58Defending his world 115-pound title against Mauricio Pastrana of Colombia.
00:26:03Oh, my God.
00:26:04I love you.
00:26:05Oh, my God.
00:26:06Oh, my God.
00:26:07Oh, my God.
00:26:08No.
00:26:09No knockdown.
00:26:10Let's go.
00:26:11No knockdown.
00:26:12Again, it's not a knockdown.
00:26:13No.
00:26:13After he finishes up, his punch is often he's off balance because Machado's making him
00:26:17stay at such a .
00:26:18The biggest difference right now still is at right .
00:26:23Even though it's not Lennon all the time, it's really preventing Machado from .
00:26:28getting into a zone.
00:26:29And also, Machado knows where he is by jamming him out with the right hand.

00:27:18With right and left hand punches, Pastrana managing to back him against the ropes.
00:27:23And whenever he does get hit with a good right hand, he always fires back.
00:27:26He never does for trying to get his confidence up by.
00:27:28Going into a retreat.

00:28:37And as Emmanuel points out, Machado always answers back.
00:28:41Preventing.
00:28:42And Vestrana for gaining confidence from his big connects.
00:28:45Oh, yes, but he's going to have to do a lot of punching bag.
00:28:47As Vestrana comes to fight today, this is going to be a tough fight going down the stretch.
00:28:51Got a long way to go.
00:28:52Got a long way to go.
00:28:57Got a long way to go.
00:29:02Got a long way to go.
00:29:04That's the way.
00:29:06You got to use the combination.
00:29:08Every time you get close, you hit him.
00:29:10We can't lose this fight.
00:29:14This round, we won it.
00:29:16We won this round.
00:29:18Come on, let's go.
00:29:20We're going to win the next one.
00:29:22We're going to win the next one.
00:29:24Pastrana.
00:29:26Pastrana from Columbia.
00:29:30Who lives in southern Florida.
00:29:32Is an avid fisherman.
00:29:34He's going to have to cut.
00:29:40And fish a little deeper.
00:29:42Let's go.
00:29:44Let's go.
00:29:46Pastrana.
00:29:47Pastrana quite accustomed to abject.
00:29:50Pastrana, who's growing up in Columbia.
00:29:52Lives in Pahokee, Florida.
00:29:54Which is a...
00:29:56Pretty rough little migrant labor outpost on the Florida agricultural circuit.
00:30:00But he says...
00:30:01There's great fishing there.
00:30:03He can catch bass and catfish.
00:30:05And he's...
00:30:06Loving it.
00:30:11He's...
00:30:16There's great fishing there.
00:30:17I have to play.
00:30:19There's greater fishing there.
00:30:24What am I talking about?
00:30:26I'll tell you what am I talking about providing the dictionary is...
00:30:29Not looking better.
00:30:31That's even a breeding fish.
00:30:35They don't have gentry.
00:30:37But overtime.
00:30:39person is outside independently.
00:30:40made him be a more effective also. He's doing a more variety of things and he's not as predictable.
00:30:45And the right jab when you fight.
00:30:50And the right jab on the southpaw or vice versa is always the easiest to land because it's the closest to the opponent's head.
00:30:55And all you have to do is shoot a straight line and then actually beat any other push that's coming out.
00:31:00He's got it with a straight right hand of the body.
00:31:05Machado pecking with the left and moving away.
00:31:09Estrano looping the right hand.
00:31:10And getting it over Machado's right or left.
00:31:15Yes.
00:31:20That little jab-like right hand you were talking about before.
00:31:25One of the most effective points so far in the fight, even if he doesn't land all the time, is keeping him from getting set.
00:31:30And it always will beat any other punch. It will get there closest because it's already right there.
00:31:35But I think going down the stretch, he's going to have his hands thrown. This is going to be a very, very tough...
00:31:40...because seemingly the possibility of losing really...
00:31:45...is Amalek's Pastrana.
00:31:48And between rounds, it reminded him almost...
00:31:50...that he's losing this round and he seems to get up before the bell. He's all excited and emotional.
00:31:55He's mostly charged up.
00:31:58And you get the impression, Pastrana...
00:32:00...understands he's up against it trying to win a decision. He wants to keep...
00:32:05...hammering away at Machado. Hope that Machado makes a mistake and he can score a big enough punch.
00:32:10He wants to get him in front of him. A left hand inside caught the attention of the crowd.
00:32:14Oh, yes. And he caught...
00:32:15...and I think for Machado's attention too.
00:32:18The shout out now seems to be in...
00:32:20...to retreat rather than just moving tactically.
00:32:24The anger and...
00:32:25...the aggression that Matrana's bringing into this fight...
00:32:27...particularly as the round goes on...
00:32:28...is going to really take...
00:32:30...just to see how Machado's inside as far as being tough.
00:32:33Because if Machado's energy level...
00:32:35...or his concentration level slips just a little bit...
00:32:38...then the fulcrum could turn here.
00:32:40The fight can turn completely.
00:32:41The fight can turn completely.
00:32:43Stop!
00:32:45No, no...
00:32:46...tomt untie...
00:32:48No!
00:32:49I'm not sure...
00:32:50And still to come, our main event,
00:32:53three pounds north of here at 100.
00:32:55118 pounds.
00:32:57Jim Austin, 22 wins, no loss.
00:33:00One draw, 20 knockouts on his record so far.
00:33:05Jim Austin tries for a successful homecoming,
00:33:07fighting for the first time in his hometown.
00:33:10Cincinnati, city with a pretty rich boxing tradition.
00:33:15Having produced Esa Charles and Aaron Pryor.
00:33:20You have to use a jab, jab, jab on this guy.
00:33:25You have to jab, jab, and then the right hand, jab, jab.
00:33:28You have to walk.
00:33:30Box, box, and move back.
00:33:35Persistence pays off as Pastrano waits.
00:33:40Hands in, and that left hand, flush on the jaw,
00:33:44perhaps his best punch.
00:33:45One thing that happens when you begin to back up as Concert.
00:33:50Hardly, as Machado has,
00:33:52is your punches are no longer landing in the sixth.
00:33:55Round by copy of box numbers.
00:33:56Machado threw 52 punches,
00:33:58but landed only three of them.
00:34:00He had been landing at a fairly high rate of accuracy.
00:34:02Prior to that, Mauricio Pastrano got credit for...
00:34:0512 out of 37 in the sixth round.
00:34:08So if you're looking for a round for the smaller fighter to win...
00:34:10That might have been the one.
00:34:11Harold Lederman, how'd you score it?
00:34:13I'll get you.
00:34:14I thought it turned a little bit.
00:34:15I gave him Rats 5 and 6, 48, uh, uh, I'm sorry, 58, 56...
00:34:20One last two, Felix Machado with Mauricio Pastrano pulling out round 5 and 6.
00:34:25And I think he's slowing up, Felix Machado a bit.
00:34:29I think he's hurt.
00:34:30But when he gets inside, working a lot more, that's for sure.
00:34:34One thing Jim noticed, they won't let...
00:34:35Mauricio Pastrano sit down in between rounds.
00:34:37And I think that's really hurt the kid.
00:34:39He needs that rest.
00:34:40I have the same score for...
00:34:45Four rounds to two.
00:34:48Well, as the fight goes on, I think...
00:34:50Machado with all of his talent.
00:34:51And this is going to be a fight that if he wins,
00:34:53that he's going to have to win it from the inside also.
00:34:55Because his boxing talent, as good as it is,
00:34:58is going to be challenged.
00:34:59And eventually...
00:35:00He's going to have to win it by just being a tough guy inside.
00:35:03Because Pastrano's not going to let him coach through it easily.
00:35:05By just sitting back and boxing.
00:35:10One thing that's happening here that could be significant if the fight gets closer...
00:35:15Is that Pastrano's winning over the crowd.
00:35:18That's very true.
00:35:19And at the stage right now...
00:35:20Yeah, his defense isn't much better too.
00:35:23Don't believe you!
00:35:24Don't!
00:35:25Three-punch combination from Machado.
00:35:30Who seems to be getting his feet back under him.
00:35:33On the offensive side of the...
00:35:35He's going to have to win the ball in this round.
00:35:40They trade shots inside.
00:35:42They trade shots inside.
00:35:45When Mauricio Pastrano is the classic kick...
00:35:50In the case of a fighter who won't take no for an answer.
00:35:53A very determined fighter.
00:35:54And he's a determined fighter...
00:35:55And this is the way he beat Michael Carvajal with this...
00:36:00It's kind of...
00:36:01You can't stop me from coming.
00:36:03I'm going to just keep coming for it.
00:36:05As long as I can.
00:36:07I don't think Michael was...
00:36:09I know he wasn't prepared.
00:36:10He was not physically, I think, or mentally into the fight.
00:36:14But this Pacrano here...
00:36:15Pacrano is a much more improved fighter.
00:36:18But also extremely, extremely...
00:36:20And I actually think maybe why he's not sitting down between rounds.
00:36:25Because it seems he gets up right away.
00:36:27Because he's just so emotionally charged up.
00:36:29Yeah, he is really...
00:36:30Psyched to the max.
00:36:32Machado has fought him back better here in round number six.
00:36:35It's an interesting round coming down the stretch.
00:36:40But after the national winures...
00:36:42He's such a bad title.
00:36:43Stop!
00:36:43Stop!
00:36:45Ring generalship or sustained aggression.
00:36:50Sustained aggression and determination.
00:36:54Let's get serious.
00:36:55Are you tired?
00:36:57Well, let's go then.
00:37:00You have to use that right hand.
00:37:04And then you...
00:37:05Use the hook.
00:37:06Don't only throw the ring here.
00:37:08Use the combination.
00:37:11What are you waiting for?
00:37:12What are you waiting for?
00:37:13That he'll hit you?
00:37:15Go out and look for it.
00:37:18Let's go.
00:37:20When he gets closer with that jab, you gotta...
00:37:25You hit him.
00:37:26You hit the champ.
00:37:27Use a double jab.
00:37:29Over...
00:37:30And a hook.
00:37:31I know, I know, I know.
00:37:33Don't keep repeating the same thing.
00:37:35I know, I know.
00:37:36You're the champ.
00:37:37All right, Manny, you were watching Mauricio...
00:37:40Pastrana's corner between rounds.
00:37:41What was it you saw?
00:37:42Well, he sat down and as soon as he gets a little bit of instruction...
00:37:45Because he gets like...
00:37:46He got all excited and he jumps up right away.
00:37:48He does sit down, but he just so charged up...
00:37:50But he's frustrated because he can't do what he wants to do.
00:37:53So it's not that they won't let him sit down, it's that...
00:37:55It's hard for them to keep him down.
00:37:57Yeah, he's a very, very emotional kid as we can see right now.
00:38:00He only wants 30 seconds between rounds.
00:38:02Stop!
00:38:03Stop!
00:38:04Stop!
00:38:05No, no, no.
00:38:05Stop!
00:38:06Stop!
00:38:07Stop!
00:38:08Stop!

00:40:09No.
00:40:10No.
00:40:11So he could probably read the rap because he's busier, but he's not landing as many punches
00:40:16As he was earlier and Pastrana goes in with those punches that create excitement in the crowd because he
00:40:21Dead is so infrequently that a lot of the judges sometimes get confused and score in a fight like this
00:40:26Two judges from Ohio one from Indiana my experience with
00:40:31Judges from places where there isn't as much boxing as Vegas in New Jersey
00:40:36They're less interested in technique and more interested in aggression
00:40:41So you tell your fighter to keep going forward the way Pastrana has
00:40:46Larry I mentioned that it's a rare visit for us to the hundred eight
00:40:51Eighteen and hundred and fifteen pound neighborhood who are some of the most popular of the smaller fighters well
00:40:56Nineties we saw Michael Carvajal coming out of the 88 olympics creating a lot of excitement
00:41:01There's a flyweight he's from phoenix orlando canizales from san antonio
00:41:06jr jones from new york and johnny tappy of course from albuquerque
00:41:11So exciting little guys that created followings
00:41:16He hit me with the with the with the with his head
00:41:20with my eye
00:41:21Doble jab
00:41:23Doble jab
00:41:24Use it
00:41:25Doble jab
00:41:26Use it
00:41:26You hook
00:41:27And use a right hand
00:41:28Use a right hand
00:41:29Use a right hand
00:41:30Use a right hand
00:41:31Use the combinations
00:41:33Use the combinations
00:41:34Winning by points
00:41:35Come on
00:41:36We don't want to lose this fight.
00:41:39Come on, let's go.
00:41:40You have the guts for this.
00:41:41Let's go.
00:41:45In round number eight.
00:41:46Felix Machado by CompuBox numbers landing only eight of 66.
00:41:51Mauricio Pastrana throwing fewer but landing more.
00:41:5414 out of 50.
00:41:55Pastrana with a 12.
00:41:56Six-edge and tower connects.
00:41:58Letterman gave the round to Machado.
00:42:01He maintains a solid lead on the Letterman unofficial scorecard.
00:42:06It's a big one.
00:42:07I won't go.
00:42:08I won't go.
00:42:09I won't go.
00:42:10I won't go.
00:42:11No, no, no!
00:42:16I don't think I don't think I don't think I don't think
00:42:21I don't think
00:42:26You
00:42:31Big left hand inside by Pastrana, awkwardly
00:42:36thrown left hand, chopping over the top, but made contact.
00:42:39Yeah, everything he does has a good.
00:42:41But he's doing the best that he can, but at this stage, Machado's
00:42:46keeping that little edge ahead of him by moving, changing up.
00:42:49It's a cut on the right hand.
00:42:51The guy of Machado.
00:42:52Yeah, the swummy sandwich from a hit, but I think it's going to
00:42:56do the...
00:42:56He's doing a decent job on it.
00:42:57I don't think it's going to be a factor going down the stretch.
00:43:01Well, we'll see.
00:43:06Machado's Venezuelan cut man, Luis Gomez, going to work between
00:43:10rounds.
00:43:11Trickle of blood coming down by the right eye.
00:43:16One thing that Machado...
00:43:20One thing that Machado...
00:43:21who's been able to maintain is that distance.
00:43:23He still has kept the distance for the most part.
00:43:25Whereas...
00:43:26Machado still has to learn to punch at him.
00:43:28And he's been able to pick and pick with time his punches.
00:43:31And then he's done him.
00:43:33velocidade.
00:43:34Three left guard.
00:43:35Delgado will have to stand on.
00:43:36I
00:43:41I
00:43:46I think the eyes bothered him also did the determination in a temple of this fight
00:43:51I don't think he's probably experienced before
00:43:56by Machado countering Pastrana
00:43:58Pastrana wouldn't be deterred
00:44:00got inside
00:44:01anyway
00:44:03doesn't seem like the outcome is that serious
00:44:05but it seems
00:44:06he wears maybe get in his eye
00:44:08the bloody sevens father
00:44:11and he's probably never been cut before
00:44:13so
00:44:15and Pastrana trying to make
00:44:16the most of it
00:44:18going more and more with the left hand
00:44:20as he goes inside
00:44:21trying to make contact
00:44:23on the cut
00:44:24no punching
00:44:25step back
00:44:26let's go
00:44:26let's go
00:44:28let's go
00:44:29let's go
00:44:30let's go
00:44:31if this fight gets close
00:44:33it's worth remembering
00:44:35that twice
00:44:36Pastrana made contact
00:44:38with the canvas
00:44:39and both times
00:44:40the referee
00:44:41ruled the slips
00:44:42therefore no extra points
00:44:43for Machado
00:44:44in the earlier rounds
00:44:45when he might have gotten them
00:44:47and Pastrana beats on his chest
00:44:49and Pastrana beats on his chest
00:44:50as he goes to his corner
00:44:52saying
00:44:53to Machado
00:44:54Machado
00:44:55I'm coming on
00:44:56you can't handle that
00:44:58you can't handle that
00:45:00you have to
00:45:03you have to
00:45:04you're losing
00:45:05losing you have to knock him out to win you are the champ and don't use the
00:45:10opera
00:45:10use a hook don't throw uppercuts
00:45:15you do it he hits you back
00:45:16the cut
00:45:19occurred
00:45:20in the eighth round on a collision of the heads.
00:45:25It's accidental.
00:45:27You see Mercado brushing his eye.
00:45:30After that close encounter.
00:45:35Go to work, go to work, go to work.
00:45:40Double jab, double jab.
00:45:42A little bit concerned as he comes.
00:45:45He comes out for the 10th round.
00:45:47How do you have it through nine?
00:45:48Okay, Jim, I got it six rounds to...
00:45:5083, 87, 84, Felix Machado.
00:45:53He's doing enough boxing to win the five.
00:45:55He lost a couple rounds when Mauricio Pastrana got inside,
00:45:58named him five, six, and eight.
00:46:00But Mauricio Pastrana is going to need a very strong finish
00:46:03to catch up because he gave away too many...
00:46:05early rounds.
00:46:07Well, Harrod, you're probably right.
00:46:08Stop! Stop!
00:46:09But with blood...
00:46:10trickling from Machado's eye with...
00:46:13Gastrano coming on and...
00:46:15winning the crowd.
00:46:16This could be a much closer score than we...
00:46:20anticipate.
00:46:21I'm willing to bet you there's at least one judge
00:46:23with a much closer scorecard than Harrod...
00:46:25Letterman's.
00:46:26Maybe a couple.
00:46:27As I've mentioned before, these judges don't have the...
00:46:30corruptliness and the experience that Harrod has,
00:46:33and judges in places where they...
00:46:35don't have a lot of big time boxing tend to favor aggressors.
00:46:38Pastrana has been the aggressor...
00:46:40every minute of every round.
00:46:41Even though he's been out boxing our class,
00:46:44and actually out...
00:46:45he's been out boxing for the most part.
00:46:46Absolutely.
00:46:47Well, oftentimes the Fido have...
00:46:50problems coming back into a round after having a cut being
00:46:53worked on between rounds because...
00:46:55he's been in the corner and working on the cut sometimes...
00:46:57he leaves Vaseline and things like that...
00:46:58he gets in his eye and bothers him...
00:47:00more so than the blood itself.
00:47:02Plus, he tends to be focusing on...
00:47:05the cut and what's happening with that...
00:47:07rather than thinking about the technical adjustments...
00:47:09that he might need to make.
00:47:10from round to round.
00:47:11That's correct.
00:47:12It takes away...
00:47:13focus and concentration.
00:47:14Pastrana lands a wild...
00:47:15right hand...
00:47:16right on the button...
00:47:17and another one...
00:47:18and another one...
00:47:20in his corner between rounds...
00:47:21Pastrana was asking his trainer,
00:47:23Nelson Lopez...
00:47:24how am I doing...
00:47:25am I still behind?
00:47:26Do I need to keep working harder to build it up?
00:47:29and Lopez kept...
00:47:30saying...
00:47:31you're behind...
00:47:32fight harder...
00:47:33you're behind...
00:47:34fight harder...

00:47:40I wonder if that signifies that the strata is a little.
00:47:45A little bit tired from the effort he's making.
00:47:47I don't know. Asking Pastrana to fight harder is like asking.
00:47:50Niagara to flow harder.
00:47:52Build more water over the top.
00:47:55He seems to have gotten very tired and he's getting very sloppy when he comes in on his...
00:48:00And Machado's for the most part been pretty consistent.
00:48:03Maybe not punching as powerful.
00:48:05But he's maintained his parts for the most part still.
00:48:10I'm done.
00:48:11I'm done.
00:48:12I'm done.
00:48:13I'm done.
00:48:14I'm done.
00:48:15Oh
00:48:20Stop, stop, no punching, no punching.
00:48:25Let's go.
00:48:30Machado countering effectively there.
00:48:35Accurately.
00:48:36Let's go.
00:48:37Ten seconds.
00:48:38He's landed a couple of big combinations in this round.
00:48:40And Pastrana, as Manny points out.
00:48:45More and more sloppy as he wildly lunges inside.
00:48:49Now, it's...
00:48:50To Don King card, there were some interesting moments on the undercard.
00:48:55The United States Olympian, Ricardo Williams, who won a silver medal in the Sydney Olympics.
00:48:59Fought his third professional.
00:49:00Fought his third professional fight and totally outclassed John Lopez.
00:49:06Wearing Reyes' gloves, the puncher's glove for the first time.
00:49:09Williams showed more...
00:49:10More authority with his fists than has been the case in his two previous fights.
00:49:13And scored a third round.
00:49:15TKO.
00:49:16Then, heavyweights.
00:49:17Henry Akinwande against Maurice Mobeta Harris.
00:49:20And Harris' slick moves and better footwork meant nothing here because Akinwande...
00:49:25Midway through the first round.
00:49:26Landed a straight right hand.
00:49:28And Maurice Harris...
00:49:30Never got up.
00:49:31So, it became a shocking first round knockout victory.
00:49:35For Henry Akinwande, which moves him back into the fringes of the heavyweight...
00:49:40Tendership picture.
00:49:41He's had a colorful history and not always a complimentary one.
00:49:45But tonight, a big win for Akinwande and a devastating loss for Harris.
00:49:50And we go back to Felix Machado of Venezuela and the Black Trunks against Mauricio...
00:49:55...Festrana of Colombia in the white trunks.
00:49:57They're fighting for Machado's 115-pound...
00:50:00...world title.
00:50:01And Machado is the leader on Harold Letterman's guard as we arrive at the...
00:50:0511th round.
00:50:10Harnos the campeon.
00:50:11Harnos the first round.
00:50:12Harnos the Untamed.
00:50:13Harnos the first round.
00:50:14Harnos, campeón, Harnos!
00:50:20This is typical.
00:50:25Mauricio Castrana fights, the last nine of which have all gone the distance.
00:50:30Looks like he's going to be going the route again against Pachata.
00:50:33Well, he's going against the champion this time.
00:50:35For whatever reason, this round, I'm watching Machado go back to employing something he did the first.
00:50:40Finishing up a lot of combinations more with a right jab, certainly to keep that distance again.
00:50:45His father to make sure that he doesn't get too close.
00:50:50He has maintained for the most part throughout this fight.
00:50:52He's maintained the fight at the distance he wanted, even though he tied a little...
00:50:55He's never let him get a rhythm, and now he's punching and pivoting off of his punches a lot.
00:51:00When Castrana comes in.
00:51:03So there, he's finishing up with that right jab again.
00:51:05Maybe he doesn't land, but it's still putting him back in that zone.
00:51:07See that day, he's pivoting again on the punches.
00:51:10So he's making him have to turn and pivot a lot, and that's very difficult when you're tired.
00:51:15Castrana's lunging left, but by and large, he's slowing down now in the 11th round as Machado begins...
00:51:20...to reestablish some of the technique which made him superior in the first three rounds.
00:51:24That's correct.
00:51:25...
00:51:30And they have totally sealed the game.
